he city police will increase their hi-tech quotient soon and all the grey areas in policing will be covered, said City police commissioner AK Khan. “Our men can only shift the injured victims to the hospitals but can’t treat them on the spot. Many a times by the time we take them to the hospital they are pronounced dead. We are now coordinating with other agencies and departments like fire, medical and others to rush to the spot along with the patrolling vehicles. To reduce the response time we are now fitting our patrolling with GPS, so that when we get an alert

Ayappa Bhajans and Poojas being conducted late in the night had caused discomfort to many, he said. In another major step, decibel metres are being obtained to check the sound pollution.

We are also planning for a common emergency number. All the agencies can be alerted from a single point,” he explained. Saying that there are about 200 security agencies in city, they have to work in close co-ordination with the police from time to time and all agencies must give all the details to the police he stated. he beautiful rock formations that adorn the outskirts of Hyderabad are remnants of a land more than 2.5 billion years old. But the fact unknown to us is that these rock formations strewn across the Deccan Plateau are on the verge of being wiped out and we have urbanisation to blame for it. To prevent the destruction of this environmental heritage, a group of artists, photographers and environmentalists from Hyderabad formed a registered society in 1996 called the Society to Save Rocks and it has been working hard towards the cause. The members of the society believe that rapid urbanisation in and around the City have led to uncontrolled mining and quarrying of the rocks. As a result rock formations have become a rare sight. The Society wants to impress upon land owners, developers and the government that it’s not yet late and the beautiful granite boulders can be used as pieces of art in houses, gardens, colonies and parks. Houses can
be built without destroying the rock formations and one such example is author Narender Luther’s house in Banjara Hills. Spearheading the awareness programme in Hyderabad, the Society was awarded the Heritage Award 2003 from INTACH for its efforts. They were also awarded a certificate of excellence for service in the field of Tourism Promotion 2003 from the government of Andhra Pradesh, and the National Tourism Award 2002/03 for the Best NonGovernment Organisation (NGO). Hillocks around Durgam Cheruvu, Rock Park, the hillock near Gachibowli, Bear’s Nose formation behind Cyber Towers, Mushroom Rock formation on the Central University of Hyderabad campus, Cliff Rock Hillock on Road No 46, Jubilee Hills, Monster Rock formation on Road No 71, Jubilee Hills, Tortoise Rock formation in Nandi Hills Colony, Toadstool formation on Road No 35 Jubilee Hills, Obelisk, formation in Road No 66, Jubilee Hills are some of the notified and protected under Regulation 13 of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority Zoning Regulations 1981.

THE FACES OF HYDERABAD Md Masoor, Butcher, Yousufguda
H
e’s the man when we go to when we need our mutton biryanis or kebabs. But what do we actually know about butchers? For starters they are called kasai in Hindi and Urdu. The professional butcher in the spotlight is Md Masoor who has been wielding his knife since the past 20 years, starting out when he was just a teenager. Everyday is a challenge for him because there are so many butchers that the competition is cut throat. At Rs 320 a kilo, mut-
ton is certainly expensive and people have been switching to chicken. Masoor says he is happy if he sells meat of even one goat a day. A full grown goat costs anywhere between Rs 2000-3000 and most butchers buy them from Jiyaguda. A butcher does not make more than Rs 5000 a month, which is not a great amount these days. Masoor who has a soft spot for dogs, throws away the meat scraps to strays.

Jagan hints at pact with TRS A Saye Sekhar saye@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD:
Friendship between the YSR Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has apparently fortified so much that they entered into an ‘unannounced’ electoral truck. It has been in the air that the two parties are engaged in talks for a political understanding for all future elections. The statement of president of the YSR Congress YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Friday
Cong keen to elect Dy mayor soon
Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: Congress party, which is a ruling alliance partner of MIM at GHMC hastened the process of nominating the party’s candidate for the deputy mayor post. Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president B Satyanarayana constituted a two member committee consisting of senior Congress leaders K Satyanarayana Rao and DV Satyanarayana. The committee was constituted following a meeting of party corporators with the PCC president. During the meeting the corporators had resolved that the PCC will elect the candidate for the deputy mayor’s post. The committee will hold discussions with all party corporators and leaders of the GHMC in the next three days. On January 2, the PCC president and Chief Minister will finalise the party’s deputy mayor candidate. The name of the candidate will be announced on January 3, the day of the election of mayor and deputy mayor. This will be done only an hour before elections to avoid discomfort among the deputy mayor’s post aspirants. APCC had also issued orders entrusting powers to issue whip to senior party leader and MLC K Janardhan Reddy. He will issue whip to party corporators to prevent them from defection.
cleared the air on this issue, as he left ample hints on the prospect of the electoral understanding. As if to crystallise the deal, he said his party would not pit any candidate against those who resigned for Telangana. As they resigned with strong aspirations for a separate Telangana, the YSRC decided to respect their sentiment. The party would contest all 18 seats which may go to by-elections in the State. Jagan said that the legislators who voted in favour of the no-confidence motion to highlight
the cause of farmers would contest on their behalf. He said that he appealed to the wife of late Mahbubnagar MLA Rajeswara Reddy, to contest for them. He announced that even if she chose to contest on behalf of another party, they would not field a candidate against her. Sobha Nagi Reddy and Nallapureddi Prasannakumar Reddy would resign from the Assembly and also their respective parties — PRP and TDP — would seek re-election from their con-
POLITICS stituencies on behalf of the YSRC. By issuing the statement, Jagan apparently cleared the decks for Konda Surekha to seek a re-election from her native constituency without any resistance from TRS. Jagan’s party would support Nagam Janardhan Reddy from Nagarkurnool constituency, while it would not field candidates against Jupalli Krishna Rao, and T Rajaiah, who joined the TRS.
The relationship between TRS and Jagan loyalists is in the throes ever since the latter was prevented from going on his ‘Odarpu yatra’ in Warangal. Analysts say that TRS realised the benefits it could reap by aligning with Jagan and the converse is true too.

The colony is located in IS Sadan Division (No 20) of the corporation. The colony was formed in 1968 and consists of 130 plots and has 150 individual and 23 apartments comprising over 600 families. The welfare association of the colony is being run since 1980 and it comprises of 400 members. Once in a
HYDERABAD’S BEST COLONIES PART V month, the committee members meet to discuss various activities including monitoring them. The colony was awarded with a Rs 15 lakh cash award by the corporation for its effort to protect the environment. The award has not only brought acclaim to the colony but also made it a role model for other colonies to emulate it. Unlike other colony associa-
tions, which have a strong corpus fund to undertake various initiatives, this colony collects a nominal Rs 200 from all its members annually. Whenever, the need arises, the colony members chip in and contribute for developmental initiatives. The colony has well maintained roads and garbage free environment. Members of the colony keep dry and wet dust bins to segregate domestic waste. The colony members are planning to construct a community hall with the cash award. They have sought permission from the corporation for permit to construct the hall.
I am very happy that Laxmi Nagar Welfare association has won this award. It will help other colonies to strive to reach those standards. I will try my best to ensure that the same standards are followed in other colonies as well.

lesh trade organisers, who recently shifted their bases to the City outskirts following the police crackdown, are back with bigger and better offers. From arrests made recently, it emerged that pimps are renting apartments and are making them one-stop shops for their clients — they boast of lavish entertainment rooms, bedrooms and also guest houses for the clients to rest. They go a step further to entertain customers by organising obscene dances and card games in the entertainment room, and prostitu-
tion in bedrooms. After the act, customers may rest before leaving. They are charged according to the time they spend with the girl and the offers they avail. To keep their regulars happy, pimps get a fresh stock of ‘wares’ every week spending amounts between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 for each girl; earlier, it used to be done monthly. Despite warnings and notices served by the police, owners of commercial complexes and residences in Ameerpet are still renting out their properties to those involved in flesh trade and fly-by-night software company operators just for the huge amounts they get in rent. “Owners rent out their

It is learnt that cops too are involved. They get their ‘mamools’ (bribe) every month. They sometimes even alert the organisers about possible raids by the Task Force police. Ramaiah, Krishna and Ratnam, constables attached to the SR Nagar police station were suspended by City police commissioner AK Khan for accepting ‘mamools’ from a notorious gang behind a prostitution racket.

Demand for commercial spaces dips in City
HYDERABAD: The City witnessed a 28 per cent drop in office space absorption compared to the previous year recording almost 3.76 million sq. ft. IT and ITeS sector continues to dominate the City’s office market with nearly 78 per cent of the total absorption. The suburban locations of Madhapur and Gachibowli retained their position as the micro market share with a 77 per cent absorption, according to the annual report by Cushman & Wakefield, global real estate consultants. Builders in the city accept location and infrastructure drive the absorption. There is high demand for properties from 2,000 sq. ft to 4,000 sq. ft office spaces, if they are at vantage locations, said T Janardhan Reddy, Managing Partner, Vamsiram Builders. The supply numbers went up by 67 per cent as compared to 2010 in areas like Madhapur and Gachibowli. “The City is losing its image in the minds of investors as far as the office spaces are concerned. New companies are not moving into the City and a few companies are moving out too.

Matters of saving and spending
The main reasons are political instability and lack of adequate power. Investors go by hearsay. They relate the city with these negative attributes and often the absolute strengths of the city are overpowered. There is an urgent need to solve the issues to regain the image of the City,” said Shiv Kumar, CEO, Shanta Sriram Constructions. In contrast, the figures show the overall absorption in the country has grown up by eight per cent, reaching 35.5 million sq. ft in 2011. On the other hand, there has been a reduction of over 20 per cent in the total supply entering into the market in 2011 over last year. This has helped marginally reduce demand and the supply gap in the office; however, the overall vacancy is still as high as 18 per cent. Bangalore has recorded the highest absorption in the country at 11.53 million sq. ft. This is the highest absorption rate in the last five years of the city. Chennai and NCR have shown an increase in absorption rate by 32 per cent and 15 per cent respectively in comparison to the previous year.

Lokpal: Blame game’s on NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress-led UPA government unleashed a barrage of attacks on each other Friday over the Lokpal bill fiasco, setting the tone for their electoral fight in five states over the next two months. After the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die amid chaos Thursday midnight without putting to vote the bill for an antigraft ombudsman, the battlelines were drawn. As people speculated on the behind-the-scenes political games, politicians traded charges in public in the surcharged atmosphere. Members of Team Anna, headed by anti-corruption cru-

sader Anna Hazare, cried foul and blamed the government for "deceiving the people" and vowed to continue their fight for a Lokpal. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi joined his party colleagues in slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Lokpal bill. The earliest the bill can be considered is in February during the budget session of parliament. Confusion persisted over in what form the bill, passed by the Lok Sabha Dec 27, would be brought back to the Rajya Sabha. If there are new amendments, the bill would have to go back to the Lok Sabha. "The government was defeat-
ed in the Lok Sabha on the constitutional amendment bill and they ran away from voting in the Rajya Sabha... (It) has no right to retain power. The prime minister should tender his resignation, taking moral responsibility," said Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari. "At the stroke of midnight hour when the world slept, India awoke to a fraud being played on its parliamentary democracy," added his colleague Arun Jaitley, paraphrasing Jawaharlal Nehru's famous 'Tryst with Destiny' speech. "If that was freedom at midnight, this is 'flee-dom' at midnight," he said. PTI

Indian-origin Venky gets royal honour Prasun Sonwalkar
LONDON: Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Indiaborn US citizen whose pioneering work in molecular biology won him the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry, has been honoured with a knighthood by the royal establishment here in a rare recognition of achievements by foreigners based in Britain. Ramakrishnan, 58, known to most as Venky, is based at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. He has been conferred knighthood "for services to molecular biology" in the New Year Honours List 2012, according to an official announcement here. Besides Ramakrishnan, two other foreign-born Nobel Prize winners based in the UK have been conferred knighthood in the 2012 honours list. They are Russia-born Professors Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov based at the University of Manchester, who were involved in the creation of graphene, a sheet of carbon just one atom thick. They won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. Unlike foreign citizens who were conferred knighthood in the past such as Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany, President Francois Mitterrand of France and Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York, Ramakrishnan, Geim and Novoselov are based in the UK. Born in Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, Ramakrishnan studied at Baroda University, Ohio University and the University of California, San Diego.

Syria: Protests greet Arab League observers
S
yrian security forces have reportedly opened fire to stop tens of thousands of protesters holding rallies in front of the visiting Arab League observers. Activists say at least 35 people were killed in flashpoint cities like Hama, Deraa and Homs, all of whom were being visited by League monitors. Running battles were fought at one of the largest rallies, in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Security forces were accused of firing live rounds, nail bombs and tear gas. Meanwhile, the Syrian state media showed pictures of what it said were pro-government rallies in several cities, , with protesters showing their anger at a foreignorchestrated plot that is targeting Syria’s stability and security. The UN says more than 5,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March. The government says 2,000 security forces personnel have died. Kim Jong-un named army commander N
orth Korea’s new leader, Kim Jong-un, has been formally named supreme commander of the country’s armed forces, state media said. Kim Jong-un, who took over after the death of his father Kim Jong-il earlier this month, was appointed at a meeting on Friday, KCNA news agency said. The move is seen as a clear sign that the young leader is fast consolidating power over North Korea.Kim Jong-il,died of a heart attack on 17 December. On Wednesday, a huge funeral procession was staged for the late leader in the snowy streets of the capital, Pyongyang. According to KCNA, Kim Jong-un “assumed supreme commandership of the Korean People's Army” at a Workers’ Party meeting on Friday. The appointment, which puts the young Kim in charge of the world's fourth largest army, was made in accordance with a will written by Kim Jong-il on 8 October, the news agency said. In a statement, the news
Kim Jong-Un and head of state Kim Yong-Nam at a memorial service in Pyongyang AFP agency referred to him for the first time as ‘Great Leader’ regarded as a clear message of continuity of the regime of his late father. Kim Jong-il - known in North Korea as the ‘Dear Leader’ - was in the process of formalising Kim Jong-un as his successor when he died. However, the transition was not complete, leaving regional neighbours fearful of a power struggle in the nuclear-armed pariah state. On Friday, North Korea told the international community not to “expect any change” in the wake of Kim Jong-il’s death.

Lacrosse gets a handle on Twitter WASHINGTON: Plenty of professional athletes in the United States have gotten themselves into trouble using Twitter. But a pro US lacrosse team is going to require its players to tweet — and even replace the name on the back of their jersey with their Twitter handle. The Philadelphia Wings said the jerseys featuring Twitter handles instead of player names will be worn for the February 12 game against the Buffalo Bandits. The Wings, members of the National Lacrosse League, plan to auction off the jerseys following the game, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. All of the players on the team will be required to maintain a Twitter account and there will be a "formal Twitter training session prior to the start of the season," The Wings said. The Wings, who tweet at @PhillyWings, open their season on January 14.
Mayweather pleads no contest

LOS ANGELES: Unbeaten US boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, already facing three months in jail, Friday pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge stemming from an altercation with a security guard. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in an article posted on its website that the plea was part of a deal Mayweather had reached with prosecutors and had paid a $1,000 fine. On December 21, Mayweather was sentenced to three months in jail, to begin January 6, after pleading guilty to domestic violence charges. Las Vegas judge Melissa Saragosa also ordered Mayweather to complete 100 hours of community service and fined him $2,500. The guilty plea, and no contest plea to two harassment charges, ensured the 34-year-old fighter won't go to trial on charges he hit his ex-girlfriend and threatened two of their children during an argument at her home 15 months ago. Mayweather's no contest plea on Friday took care of the last criminal charge he faced. He was accused of poking a neighbourhood security guard in the face as they argued over the fighter's parking violations.
Gregor wins first leg at Four Hills

OBERSTDORF: Austria's world ski jump champion Gregor Schlierenzauer won the first leg of the Four Hills trophy here on Friday in an Austrian 1-2-3. The 21-year-old - 2010 Olympic team champion and bronze medallist in the two individual events beat compatriots World Cup series leader Andreas Kofler and Thomas Morgenstern, who won here last year on his way to the overall title. 'Schlieri' - who turns 22 on January 7 the day after the final leg - has made this his target for the season. Should he sweep all four legs of the tournament he will earn himself an 815,000 euro bonus from the organisers, 10 years after Germany's Sven Hannewald achieved that feat. The German ski station of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the next port of call for the Four Hills on Sunday.

Reds’ win boosts top four hopes He’s back in style
LIVERPOOL: Craig Bellamy bagged a brace and Steven Gerrard was also on the scoresheet as Liverpool boosted their bid for a top four finish with a 3-1 win over Newcastle at Anfield on Friday. Kenny Dalglish’s side trailed to Daniel Agger’s own goal midway through the first half, but Bellamy equalised soon after and the former Newcastle striker netted again from a free-kick in the second half. England midfielder Gerrard, who has missed most of the season due to injury, capped a fine cameo performance from the substitutes bench with his side’s third goal.
Liverpool are now in fifth place, level on points with fourth placed Chelsea, while Newcastle remain seventh after another failed trip to Anfield. All eyes were on misfiring Liverpool striker Andy Carroll who has struggled for goals since completing a £35 million move from Newcastle last January. With Uruguay striker Luis Suarez suspended, Carroll was charged with leading Liverpool’s attack yet the 22-year-old had not found the net in a Liverpool shirt for almost seven hours. Pressure had been growing on Liverpool after their failure to kill
off teams at home threatened to cost them a top-four finish. But they travel to leaders Manchester City on January 3 with hopes of securing a place in next season’s Champions League very much alive. Just as they did against bottom-of-the-table Blackburn on Monday, Liverpool were forced to come from behind despite making the brighter start. Jose Enrique, another Liverpool player facing his former club, delivered a delightful low cross into Newcastle’s six-yard area in the 16th minute. Yet the home team’s failure to
make the most of their chances this season has been well documented and once again another opportunity went begging as there was no red shirt to turn the ball over the line. Three minutes later Carroll’s first serious attempt at goal cannoned off Bellamy who was standing in front of the Newcastle goal. Charlie Adam fired high and wide before Stewart Downing, still without a goal since completing a £20 million move from Aston Villa in July, forced visiting keeper Tim Krul into his first save after good work by Bellamy. Gunners’ New Year gift — Henry A
rsene Wenger has warned Arsenal fans not to expect the Thierry Henry of 10 years ago if the legendary striker rejoins the club as expected on a two-month loan deal. The Arsenal manager confirmed Henry will sign for the Gunners, for who he scored 226 times in 370 appearances before moving to Barcelona in June 2007, dependent on insurance agreements being worked out with New York Red Bulls. And Wenger revealed it was his idea to bring back the 34year-old, saying: “You can never take away from people what they have done, that will remain forever. Nobody expects him to be what he was 10 years ago, we just want him to help out.” He added: “I think it is just credit to him to be wanting to be helpful to a club that has given him so much. Therefore I feel there is no special pressure to be the player he was before.
“You cannot put too much pressure on him. He is here to help out, not to suddenly be the leader, the main player in the squad, and I respect his desire to help us get through a period where we lose two strikers. “He and I are conscious that he is 34 years old, but he has not lost his class or his brain. That will be just enough for us.”
Wenger wants Henry, who is available until the MLS season restarts in March, to fill the supporting striker void which will be left when Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho leave for the African Nations Cup next month, although Arsenal are trying to delay their departure by two days to leave them available for the FA Cup tie against
Leeds on January 9. The Gunners boss insists Henry needs two weeks to be fully match fit but in theory he could be available for seven Premier League matches, including key encounters against Manchester United and Tottenham as well as FA Cup ties and Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 encounter against AC Milan. On Henry’s return, Wenger added: “He (Henry) still has his pace, because he always had exceptional pace. What you lose with age is the capacity to repeat it. He still has class and quality. I don’t worry about him at all. He is there to help, nothing else. “When we need him he will come on and play. He wants to help out for two months, because this is a club he loves. He has exceptional talent, he is a very intelligent man and has a desire to help the club, so it can only be positive.”
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish admits he is glad to see the back of 2011 because he believes 2012 could be a big year for Steven Gerrard. Gerrard ended a troubled 12 months by scoring his second league goal of the season as Dalglish’s side came from behind to defeat Newcastle 3-1 at Anfield on Friday. The 31-year-old Liverpool captain was making only his sixth league appearance of an injury-hit campaign. Having undergone surgery on a damaged ankle towards the end of last season, Gerrard has missed most of the present campaign due to an ankle infection. “It’s great to see him get the reward because he has worked really hard to get where he is,” said Dalglish after Gerrard climbed off the substitutes bench to score his side’s third goal. “It was a freak injury that got him in trouble in the first place so the boy deserves a wee bit of luck. Maybe 2012 will bring him that. “He is getting his way back to fitness. It’s fantastic reward for him and everybody who has helped him to get back to the level he is at the moment. AFP

FAREWELL TO A FRIEND Quirky-side-Up
Arpita Bhawal
T
he hardest kind of love is Pet Love because it is a different kind of love — unexplainable and inconclusive. You can never categorise what you feel for your pet even if you could put your feelings for your mother, father, teacher, husband, girlfriend, wife, lover, or friend into buckets. I am glad I made a life-changing decision — possibly the only right one till date — of getting a dog in April, 2001. As it turns out through the thick and thin of my yo-yo existence through cities, loves, relationships, and friendships that have come and gone, along with taxing jobs and unsympathetic bosses, Ginger remained unchanged, unfazed and in my mind, eternal. I was certain the dog was born to haunt me till my death. Unlike many other seasoned or curious aspirants, my call to get a pet was based at a very supernatural level: I wanted to get over my fear of dogs because I believed the fear was attached to my mother’s fear of canines at a spiritual level. Also, three-odd decades ago, on the terrace of Mona’s house in Kolkata, while playing hiden-seek I was chased by her gorgeous and huge German Shepherd. At the time, I thought the dog was trying to kill me, but later I found that my silly friends had played a prank on me — and the dog was also playing with us! So, Ginger’s arrival in my consciousness happened almost 32 years ago, when I didn’t imagine what beauty lay in sharing my life with a Golden Labrador Retriever. Little would I have believed then if anyone had told me Ginger was pre-ordained to come into my life even before she was born! Possibly the runt of the litter, the last one peering from under the bed of a breeder’s unkempt home in Bengaluru’s Frazer Town, Ginger greeted with several licks. So, for the past 11 years and still counting (though raggedly now), Ginger did everything that a human being couldn’t possibly ever do for me. Through the turbulence of life and its uncertainties, Ginger was the only constant factor that kept me anchored. When I thought of jumping off the roof over a betrayed love, I got reprimanded by her challenging eyes: “Hello? What happens to me then?” Damn! The dog could read my mind. When I pondered about renouncing the world and going off to a monastery after getting cheated by some lowly friends, I found Ginger looking amused! “Who cares? Forget them — I am here! Let us go for a drive!” (I gathered that Ginger was clearly not keen on that kind of a hard life in the monastery). Whenever I ailed with flu or depression, Ginger would jump up on the bed, exactly next to me, pressing the length of her body against my shivering one to comfort me. If I was howling too much, she
I suspected that Ginger was really on a mission to rescue me from the world. She was definitely responsible for me to persist in my career in the toughest of times. Her look would be unbelievably disapproving if I told her I wanted to quit my job. “Yeah, and then who pays your rent? And who feeds us?” would place her head on my stomach. Well, you guessed it. She wasn’t letting me die on her for any reason whatsoever. Of course, a dog has to have her own reasons, too. Could be the gluten-free chew sticks, imported mattresses, and tinned meats. After all, she is a sophisticate! But, honestly, I suspected that Ginger was really on a mission to rescue me from the world. She was definitely responsible for me to persist in my career in the toughest of
times. Her look would be unbelievably disapproving if I told her I wanted to quit my job. “Yeah, and then who pays your rent? And who feeds us?” Oh yes, I knew I had to work because Ginger was used to the good things in life, just like me. I knew I had to come home at night, because she was waiting for me. I knew no matter what I did or what I failed at or what I ranted about, Ginger was never the one to stand in judgment of me like other human beings did. Believe this when I say, there is actually no relationship in this Universe that can match the one you are likely to have with your pet. Over the past couple of years, I actually began to understand that her philosophy of life was pretty much what we all need to learn: Keep It Simple. Eat on time, sleep on time, walk twice a day, enjoy your own company when alone, greet everyone with unbounded joy, and whenever you can, seize the opportunity to be loved. Even now, in the winter of her life, Ginger is a tough one to convince. She believes it is all pretty simple. Though she was diagnosed on December 26 with a possibly terminal giant ball of a tumour that is attached to her spleen, which has disrupted her appetite, made her lose over 10 kgs of weight within 90 days, and is causing her some pain, she still tries to carry on surviving with just water and milk. But her happiness in seeing me arrive from work is still sky high. She not only looks older each day, she is slipping in and out of sleep often like an 80-year-old grandma. Yet, she gurgles with joy when I rub her belly or responds as best as she can
when I call her name, like the tiny pup of 6weeks that she was when I first got her. Ginger is no longer concerned about my career or money, or the house rent, I think. She is happy to see me at home with her today. When I say to her – How will I live alone? Didn’t you agree not to die on me until you turned 14? Should I get you operated? Will you make it if I do? Ginger looks at me with pathos in her eyes and sighs: “Get real…I’m tired. All I want to do is sleep.” I cry and try to argue, but she gently rests her face on the mattress, and shuts her eyes. She is probably done with her list of things for me, I think. Or else why would she seem quite ready to start for Heaven alone? But Ginger being Ginger reminds of the list of instructions she leaves behind for me: Bear your pain or bad day with a good round of sleep; Don’t eat if your stomach hurts because the digestion tablets mostly don’t work; Be disciplined and follow the rules of the house no matter what (like I am doing even in this state!) even if it means tons of effort to even totter; Try and get some exercise twice daily, and for God’s sake don’t waste food; Like me, learn to be thrilled each day…for what you get to eat, what you are allowed to do, and who knows what other treats will come your way! Ginger, you will probably have to set up a video-conferencing facility in Heaven, because I may not have the fare to visit you up there yet, or worse, I may not be even allowed to enter. Besides, we have to be in touch because I sure as hell haven’t got most of these instructions right yet. I love you.

Design A logo is an intergral part in the creation of a brand. Marketing a product in every way possible is the mantra and having the right kind of logo is as important as having a good product. We spoke to some brand consultants to find out their picks for the best logos of 2011

logo creates an identity that is fundamental to build any brand, makes it popular among the target audience. Take for instance CocaCola, the world’s most popular soft drink. The red and white coloured scheme in the Coca-Cola logo was kept simple and distinctive to lure young minds. The Coca-Cola logo, like the product itself, is rated among the most recognised logo designs and brands in the world! Today, we take a look at some of the logos that made an impression this year. Monika Rosario, a brand consultant in an IT firm says, “One of the best designs that I have seen in the recent past is that of Vowels Entertainment Private Limited — a service provider for event management purposes.” She continues to tell us why she thinks it outstanding, “I loved the idea behind the logo, which is simple, interesting, and easy to relate. Without being too ostentatious, it has a strong recall value and is unique in approach, that perhaps has never been tried before.” She adds, “You can clearly interpret the intention behind the conceptualisation and the drawing does not distract from the overall design.” Santha John, managing director of JWT Mindset, talks about a logo they created for the tourism department of Egypt. “The vision behind the logo was to build an icon that stands for Egypt, its rich history, heritage, nature and diverse culture. After a lot of brainstorming, the makers went back to a higher form of art — the craft of Arabic calligraphy. An Egyptian calligrapher, used the traditional calligrapher’s instrument, the Qalam, made of dried bamboo.” She continues, “The idea was to find a key and that turned out to be a “T” in the end. The symbol represents, “Strength, life, fertility, health and eternity. After that colour had to be added to the logo, to keep it from becoming dry, after trying several colours the colour of Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone that was used in the jewellery of Pharaohs was finalised— an uncommon blue! The outcome as we see, is the sym-

bol of Egyptian tourism today!” Ramakanth T, managing director of RBC worldwide, is of the opinion that the redesigned logo of NBC Universal is among the best he has come across of late. It was launched by the international design branding company Landor Associates. Ramakanth says, “This logo I feel has the fine qualities of communication, purpose and design prowess. The new logo has done away with the famous NBC peacock and globe iconography from the old version. The new solution is a simple typography, an intelligent clubbing of NBC and Universal brands. They tried to address the continuity with an ‘effortful’ combination of Sans serifs with serif fonts like Copperplate. The new logo even has a purple patch as the background.” He continues, “The reason why I like such design solutions is that they are visually simple and extremely media friendly . It addresses the present and the future of corporate business strategies. Refreshing and original, it is certainly not a design made for the sake of it.” Mahendra K. the director of I Brand, loves the new logo of Hero Motocorp formerly known as Hero Honda. He says, “The new logo of the two-wheeler major shows the letter ‘H’ in capital with a neat white background along with ‘Hero’ written beneath in red. The black colour in the logo stands for solidity and exclusivity while the red gives a feeling of energy, passion, and confidence. This symbol of Hero appears in 3D, the logo even has a triangle, trapezoid and a parallelogram in the first letter of its name. The sharp edge of the logo depicts the style, engineering, innovation and connect with the new brand.” In fact, as an executive from Hero Motocorp explained in an interview to Business Line, ‘The new logo stands for the new face of India and the youthful energy and ‘can do’ spirit. It is in every sense a catapult, which signals that while it is deeply rooted in Indian values, it is also poised to go for global expansion.” So take note, your logo is the face of your brand, choose wisely!

Like most pictorial marks, it doesn’t have deep meanings within but what it lacks, it makes up for in terms of being a national symbol of China and evoking the emotions of people. Its symbolism also associates warm, adorable, innocent feelings you get from seeing Pandas.

MTV
TV’s logo has a few interesting aspects about it. The most important is that it’s actually designed so that the ‘M’ is interchangeable with other styles of M’s. This is relative to the music industry, which is always changing. It’s a successful design in that sense because as new trends and new generations come along, the logo will still remain great in the future.

uma’s wordmark is great not only because it is conveying the authority, speed and dexterity of a large cat, its composition makes it really interesting. It seems as if the cat were jumping across tall skyscrapers. The typeface used further establishes the authority and dominance the company has. All-in-all a very consistent and clever logo.

h, Nike. A logo so ridiculously good that it was designed for a ridiculous price of $35! It’s great in so many regards and conveys deep meanings within the simple abstract mark. A swoosh like this can bring about a multitude of different emotions such as speed, direction, progress, correct tick – the right choice, and much, much more.
ADIDAS

didas has a clever abstract mark that uses the bars to represent progression and accomplishing the challenges and rigours of life. The bars when seen from a distance, can be interpreted as a mountain, further reinforcing the previous notion. From a short distance, they can also look like statistical bars and the progression of success in a graph.

Samsung LED 8000 Series TV There’s a lot to like about Samsung’s 8000 Series LED TV — it’s LED backlit, 3D-capable, and packed with services and apps people might actually use, such as Skype and Facebook. Samsung’s engineers whittled the bezel down to just 0.2-in, increasing screen size without increasing the overall footprint, and creating a picture that’s more other-wordly portal than a TV monitor.
iPhone 4S
iPad 2
On the outside, you may not notice a huge difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. But it’s the inside that counts. The iPhone 4S has a zippy dual-core processor and a camera that takes some of the best photos and videos we’ve ever seen on a phone.
Casio Tryx Camera The classic camera brick has long been in need of a refresh, and Casio delivers a deft twist with this contorting 12-megapixel (1080p for video) shooter. A multitude of hinges enables it to fold, bend, hang from a hook, perch on a table and even flip its 3inch screen for a well-aimed self-portrait.
After defying critics in 2010 with the success of the first iPad, Apple wowed us again with the iPad 2. It has a faster dualcore processor, thinner and lighter body, and rear and front-facing cameras.
THE BEST GADGETS OF 2011
This year saw Apple cement its place at the top of the tech totem pole. But close on its heels were Samsung, and Kindle. Let’s hope this bodes well for 2012 Motorola Atrix 4G
Kindle Fire Despite lukewarm reviews, Amazon’s Kindle fire is selling like crazy. The company won’t give specific numbers, but “millions” have already been sold, it says. The Fire only costs $199, which is $300 cheaper than the iPad. While you sacrifice some polish and functionality for that price, the Fire is still a decent tablet for the casual user.
One day, the mobile phone will do double duty as the CPU of a full-fledged laptop. The Motorola Atrix 4G takes a big step down that road. The Atrix would be a powerhouse based on its smartphone chops alone: a dual-core 1GHz processor running Android 2.2, a GB of RAM, frontand rear-facing cameras, and access to the future 4G network. But the phone is a game-changer because of its Laptop and HD Multimedia docking systems.
Macbook Air
Nintendo 3DS Who says 3D is just a gimmick? Nintendo’s 3DS broke new ground this year by being the first major portable console that displays 3D images without glasses. As more gaming goes mobile, Nintendo depends on the 3DS to keep it competitive with games on the iPhone and Android.
This summer’s refresh of the MacBook Air was a doozy: Backlit keyboard, faster processor, and a new Thunderbolt port. It’s easily one of the best ultra-light laptops you can buy. MacBook Air sets the standard for the new wave of light and thin Ultrabooks we’ve seen at the end of this year.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul
Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com
I
t’s New Year’s eve and a happening party is on everybody’s mind. Foot tapping numbers, dancing the night away, lip smacking food and endless rounds of drinks are probably on most people’s mind as they gear up to usher in the New Year. But so is a niggling worry that the next morning could bring a niggling headache and a terribly dehydrated feeling that could just about ruin New Year’s day. Does that mean you go easy and usher in the New Year in a tamer fashion? Not at all. There are ways to keep that hangover at bay and still drink like a fish. A few simple steps taken before, during and after the party can ensure that you have the best New Year in town.

Usher in the New Year with a smile, not a hangover. A few simple steps to beat that headache
Adolescence is a delicate period
Gear up “There are a few simple steps you can take to ensure that you don’t have a hangover. Before you head to a party make sure you eat something or drink a glass of cold milk. Milk helps slow down the absorption of alcohol in the steam. Drinking on an empty stomach
Dr Suneetha Sapur
Hemalatha
Beat hangover, party hard
can cause acidity and the alcohol hits you faster,” says Hemalatha Rathi, clinical nutritionist at Soul Beauty and Wellness Centre, LLP. According to Hemalatha eating something before you down those pegs also helps ensure that you don’t end up pigging out on the fried snacks as much.
While you’re at it Since alcohol dehydrates the body, one of the main reasons for a hangover, drinking water
in between drinks can help. “It does not mean you glug down a gallon of water, but a glass in between a couple of pegs can help. This prevents the body from getting dehydrated and also reduces the severity of the hangover,” explains Hemalatha, adding, “It’s best to remember that it is dark coloured drinks like rum and red wine that dehydrate the most.” It is also important to not mix your drinks. Mixing drinks only means a load of vomiting and discomfort.
Detoxify A good way to beat that throbbing headache the next morning is by downing a cup of steaming black coffee. “Drinking plenty of green tea through the day will help too. Try eating an egg, either boiled or as an omelette, with breakfast. Fruits rich in potassium like bananas are a good option,” says Hemalatha, adding, “In case you are feeling overtly dehydrated then it might be a good idea to drink some ORS, either made at home with water, sugar and salt
or get the ready made powders from a pharmacy.” It’s a good idea to go on a liquid diet the day after a crazy party. “You can step up your intake of water, soups (not the ones available in a supermarket), coconut water and juices to combat dehydration quite effectively. Also this helps flush out toxins from your system. Coconut water will also help replace the minerals, salts and water in your body. If nothing works, try having another small peg,” smiles Hemalatha.
My daughter is 12 years old and I am not too sure what kind of food I should be giving her to meet her nutrition needs. Please advise. During the pre-adolescent period the child grows, on an average, 6-7 cm in height and 1.5 to 3 kg in weight every year, during the teenage years there is rapid increase in height and weight, hormonal changes, sexual maturation and wide swings in emotions. Adolescent growth spurt starts at about 10-12 years in girls and two years later in boys. The annual peak rates for height and weight are 9-10 cm and 8-10 kg. Mineral density of the bone increases during this period so the development of critical bone mass is essential during this period which is essential for stronger bones later in life. At the same time adolescence is the vulnerable stage for developing wrong food habits, the peer group plays an important role in their choices of food. For instance, girls will become more conscious about their body changes, and try to reduce their intake of food but their nutritional needs are much higher than that of boys. Muscle, bone and fat increase during adolescence. Adolescents particularly require more energy, protein, calcium and iron along with all other nutrients. Though the recommended dietary allowances for calcium are about 600-800 mg/d only, it is desirable to give higher quantities of calcium to kids during this age to achieve high peak bone mass. Milk and milk products, green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits should be included regularly in every day meal. Cooking oils/ghee (25-40g) should be consumed based on their activity. Excess intake of fat may lead to weight gain and obesity, so it is better to avoid them.

Only Katrina could have been Chikni Chameli
C
horeographer Ganesh Acharya, who directed Katrina Kaif’s dance moves in the popular item number Chikni Chameli, says she was the perfect choice for the number and that nobody could have done justice to the song. “Katrina has done a lot of hard work for the song. Only Katrina Kaif could have been
Chikni Chameli, nobody else and she has proved it also,” said Acharya. “We choreographers only choreograph the song, but it is the artiste who makes all the difference. She did it very nicely,” he added. Acharya is known for choreographing item numbers like Beedi in Omkara and Shalu ke thumke in Bin Bulaye Baraati. IANS

Remakes not a trend, but creative choice: Abhishek
A
bhishek Bachchan is gearing up for the release of his new film Players, an official remake of the Hollywood film Italian Job, and the actor feels that remakes are more of a creative choice than just a trend. “Players is the official remake of Italian Job. The story of players is the same, but the screenplay is completely different because you have to make it for the Indian audience,” Abhishek said. “I don’t think there is any trend. We make a thousand films a year and, out of this, may be four or five are remakes. I think it is more of a creative choice than following a trend. When Abbas-Mustan saw Italian job, they felt they want to make this for the Indian audience,” he added. Nowadays, social networking sites are becoming a prominent platform for actors and filmmakers for promoting their films, but Abhishek doesn’t seem to be in favour of it. “Social networking isn’t just for promotions. It is a platform to exchange ideas and interact with our fans... A little bit of promotion is fine but I don’t think promoting the whole film is advisable,” said the actor. IANS

No formula for making successful films
K
ay Kay Menon, who has played varied roles in films like Sarkar, Life In A...Metro and Gulaal, doesn’t conform to any particular style and says there is no formula to make a successful film. “I don’t think of trends. I do films that I feel I can give my best to and also enjoy. So, I don’t think there is any formula for making successful films. If there had been one, everyone would have been following it,” Kay Kay said. The 48-year-old, who has been working in the industry for over a decade, says the current lot of filmmakers are churning out wonderful movies, but audiences haven’t opened up to such experiments in a big way. “Over the years there has been a

We don’t get audiences for such films,” said Kay Kay. “It will take time, but it is important for the audience to realise it,” added the actor who worked in TV shows such as Pradhan Mantri and TV movies like Zebra 2 and Last Train To Mahakali at the beginning of his career. Bollywood is divided into two categories, commercial films and offbeat films, and Kay Kay says he is not in favour of such distinctions. “People have distinguished films for the sake of commerce. Whether the film is commercially viable, it is
known only after the film is released. This distinction is wrong. The industry is biased towards money. Once the focus of the industry shifts to creativity from just money, we would go a long way,” he rued. Having said that, he is happy with his acting journey. “I have no complaints so far. My career did have its ups and downs, but at the same time it has given me a lot of friends and I have been able to do different kind of films.” His next is Chaalis Chauraasi that revolves around four cops — Pankaj Suri aka SIR (Naseeruddin), Albert Pinto aka Pinto (Kay Kay Menon), Bhaskar Sardesai aka Bobby (Atul Kulkarni) and Shakti Chinappa aka Shakti (Ravi Kishan). Directed by Hriday Shetty, it will hit the silver screens January 13. IANS

et another sequel to hit the screen this season is Guy Ritchie’s Game of Shadows, an entertaining but largely unimpressive show for Sherlock Holmes fans. Especially if you belong to the category of those who prefer to remain loyal to the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Following the trail of the 2009 movie, Ritchie derives tangent and then runs with it. So be

The glamour behind the glitz
Poor Man’s Arundhati I
t’s been a long time since Priyamani has starred in a film where she’s the centre of attraction. In Kshetram, she plays two different characters; she fights, screams and gets enough space to display a whole array of emotions. Yet, the film fails to make a big impression due to a bad script and the lack of imagination. Directed by T Venugopal, the film stars Priyamani, Jagapathi Babu and Shaam in the lead roles. We are told that generations from a royal family have not been able to reinstate the statue of Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at a temple. Several people in the family have died every time someone attempts to complete this ritual which in turn will bring a lot of wealth and prosperity to several villages surrounding the temple. Chinna (Shaam) falls in love with Sohini (Priyamani) and both of them manage to convince their parents about their marriage. When Chinna’s father, Narasimha Rayulu (Aditya Menon) sees Sohini, she reminds him of his sister-inlaw Naga Penchulamma (Priyamani). A day after Chinna and Sohini’s marriage, all hell breaks loose and Sohini is possessed by a spirit. How this affects her and Chinna and why does a powerful spirit possess her forms the rest of the story. It’s a pity that the film offers
nothing new in terms of story. We have had plenty of films like Indra, Jayam Manadera among many others where the protagonist wants to do something good for the society, but he faces resistance from some people. In Kshetram, although Venugopal tries to keep few things hidden, the conflict point is quite apparent. Venugopal beats around the bush even after making it clear that the protagonist’s own family members are plotting against him. No wonder the film turns out to be a big bore and in a way, it seems like Arundhati, minus the visual effects and gripping screenplay. The only silver lining in the film is Priyamani. HEMANTH KUMAR

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
