City trouble stemmed
Petrol dealers’ strike
A
n attempt to cause trouble similar to the Sangareddy mayhem in the Old City was snuffed out by quick police action. A mischievous post online about a holy place spurred several hundreds of one community who gathered at Charminar and staged a dharna. Cyber police, however, traced the source to a City college and booked three students.

990. The month of December. It was a mad year-end for Hyderabad. Communal riots broke out like firecrackers on Diwali. Police were the most harassed lot if one held the commoners in the City as victims. And in the insane scramble to raise the score of macabre killing, each side tried to outbid the other. In such a mad situation a police constable Mohd Abdul Quader attached to the Shah Ali Banda police station shot dead Assistant Commissioner of Police of Chatrinaka, Sattatiah, with his service rifle for what he perceived as a partisan behaviour of his superior. Quader surrendered to law without struggle. Put on trial, he was awarded a life sentence, which is 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. Twenty-one years later, Quader, 50, still remains a ‘quaidi’ and he is in Gandhi hospital with mul-
tiple health problems. He can hardly walk and his wife, Sabira, attends to him. Quader’s brother, Abdul Quddus has moved the AP High Court but the matter is yet to be decided. Meanwhile, several representations were made to the government by the MIM leaders and others but they all get mysteriously stonewalled. Quddus alleged that his brother had suffered untold miseries and torture in different jails as policemen took turn abusing and torturing him for killing a police officer. “Today, he is a physical wreck,” said Quddus. “I hope the Court will give me justice,” he said with a
gesture of helplessness. The release order has to come from the Home department and nobody knows why it is not given seven years after he served his term. Prison officials say that they are helpless and the orders had to come from ‘above.’ During his incarceration, Quader was released seven times on parole for various occasions like death, marriage in the family. The longest period was in February 2012 when he got 15 days parole to conduct his daughter’s marriage, his family said. Abdul Quadeer belongs to Hyderabad and his family lived in the Old City’s Qazipura.

Celebrating the spirit of youth For 31 years they’ve enthralled City youth with their fest. This year too Vasavi College of Engineering is back with Euphoria for 48 hours of non-stop fun and cultural extravaganza
O
ver the course of its glorious history, if there is any one thing about Vasavi College Of Engineering that is so defining, so enchanting and so eagerly awaited, it is definitely its annual social and cultural extravaganza, Euphoria. Held on March30 and 31 this year, what started out as an intra college cultural event has grown steadily during its 31 years to become one of the
biggest fests of its kind in the State. Euphoria is a celebration that recognises no difference, a celebration for a cause. Over the years, one thing that has always stayed with Euphoria, and in essence, defined it, is passion. Passion in the way we think, and in everything that we do. Traditionally, the fest is known to have been a defining platform for some of the most successful and accomplished artists in as diverse fields as music, dance, theatre, debate, design and more. This year it is no different from the others. ‘Battle Of Bands’ where the top bands from all over the country hit the
metal hard in the battle to be the best and ‘Bike Stunt Show’ where the rubber is burnt, the best stunts are showcased are star attractions. In addition to these enthralling events we also have the Underground Authority and Bhargavi Pillai performing on March 31 as part of the Celebrity Night. Not to forget Abhinay, Theme Ballet, Vasavi Talkies, the cultural clubs of Vasavi to add their share of magic to the entire event. At the end of the day, Euphoria is more than just 48 hours of fun. It is a celebration — a celebration of the true spirit of youth.

Fighter’s legacy lives on Fighter, the St.Bernard puppy that died recently of canine distemper, inspired the Animal Welfare Forum (ARPF) to float Project Fighter, to help owners understand the problems of their pets Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
“F
ighter not only taught us to fight the worst situations without giving up but also gave us a reason to stand and fight against the cruelty of dumping our pets at the first sign of a trouble,” said Nihar Parulekar, founder of ARPF. Project Fighter is a platform to create awareness about diseases that pets are likely to be afflicted with and their preventive measures. It will specially focus on canine distemper— a highly contagious, systemic, viral disease which is closely related to the viruses of measles and rinderpest. “Distemper is not 100 per cent curable but it is 100 per cent preventable,” Parulekar observed. Lately, Hyderabad has seen a steady rise in canine distemper cases which is normally mistaken for other viral disorders. It is mostly caused in the new born puppies. The primary mode of transmission is airborne viral particles that dogs breathe in. If Proper medication is not administered in the primary stage the disease ultimately results into death. Many dogs afflicted with this disease experience gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms, such as: n Diarrhea n Fever (usually present but unnoticed) n Pneumonia (cough, laboured breathing) n Rhinitis (runny nose) n Vomiting Expert Vets will help the owners understand the importance of timely vaccination and proper hygiene conditions for their pet’s longer life. http://arpf.posterous.com
What the docs say Expert Critical Care and Emergency specialists, Dr Abhishek Kalundia and Dr Santosh from Dr Dogs clinic: Is canine distemper curable? Treatments are 90% supportive and are directed at limiting secondary bacterial invasion, supporting fluid balance, and controlling nervous manifestations. Antibiotics, balanced electrolyte solutions, nutrition, dietary supplements, antipyretics, nasal preparations, analgesics, and anticonvulsants are used. No
single treatment is uniformly successful. Dogs may recover, but good nursing care is essential. Despite intensive care, some do not make a satisfactory recovery. Unfortunately, treatment for acute distemper is unsuccessful. How can canine distemper be prevented? The best prevention is vaccination. Most puppies are born with their mother’s antibodies to CDV, which prevents them from becoming infected if exposed to the virus. They
begin to lose their maternal protection between 6 and 12 weeks of age, which is when they should be vaccinated. Two to three vaccinations should be administered. Vaccination works even if they have already been exposed to the virus, if administered within 4 days of exposure. Is there any Law making it mandatory for breeders or owners to vaccinate their dogs? Unlike foreign countries, India has no such Law. Though few get it done for precaution and out of concern, others simply neglect it owing to lack of awareness about distemper.

Apple’s tough times in China International labour watchdog groups have said workers in Chinese plants run by Foxconn are poorly treated, and have blamed a string of apparent suicides on the conditions
T
he man tipped to be China’s next leader has told Apple that foreign firms should protect workers, state media said on Thursday, as the US giant fends off criticism over factory conditions in China. International labour watchdog groups have said workers in Chinese plants run by major Apple supplier Foxconn of Taiwan are poorly treated, and have blamed a string of apparent suicides on the conditions. Vice-Premier Li Keqiang, who is likely to be China’s next premier, met Tim Cook while the new Apple chief executive was visiting Beijing on Tuesday, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Li told Cook multinational companies should “pay more attention to caring for workers", the report said. Cook on Wednesday visited a Foxconn plant employing 120,000 people in China’s central city of Zhengzhou, where he viewed the production line, Apple said. California-based Apple is wildly
1,000 strike at Apple supplier in China About 1,000 workers at a plant in southern China that makes components for Apple and IBM went on strike this week, a rights group said, the latest in a string of labour disputes. Hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear, deployed after staff at the factory in the manufacturing hub of Shenzhen walked out on Tuesday and blocked a highway to protest long working hours, China Labour Watch said. Staff at the plant worked 100 to 120 hours of overtime a month and said they also suffered a high rate of workplace injuries, mass layoffs of older workers and frequent verbal abuse by managers, the US-based group said. The plant, which employs 3,000 people is owned by Taiwan’s Jingyuan Computer Group
popular in China, where its products such as the iPhone and iPad are coveted by wealthy consumers. Greater China — which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan — has become Apple’s fastest growing region, and revenue from there is second only to the United States. “Tim had great meetings with Vice Premier Li and other top officials in Beijing," Apple said in a statement provided to AFP on Thursday. “China is very important to us and we look forward to even greater investment and growth here," it said. The company declined to comment on the issues discussed at the meetings with officials, which included Beijing’s mayor. Apple is still grappling with a series of problems from negative publicity over its supply chain to a trademark contest. Chinese computer firm Proview Technology (Shenzhen) claims it owns the “iPad” trademark, and has sought to block
sales of the iconic tablet computer in China through lawsuits. Apple says it legally bought the rights to the trademark. Xinhua quoted Li as saying that China would “strengthen intellectual property rights protection", although the report did not say whether he commented directly on the trademark dispute. The Taiwan affiliate of Proview registered “iPad” as a
trademark in several countries including China as early as 2000 — years before Apple began selling its product. The US titan subsequently bought the rights for the global trademark, but Proview claims the Taiwanese affiliate had no right to sell the Chinese rights. A Chinese court is now considering an appeal by Apple after rejecting its earlier lawsuit.

Quake rocks Kashmir
SRINAGAR: A moderate intensity earthquake today shook the Kashmir Valley but there were no immediate reports of any casualty or damage. “An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude was experienced at 9.46am in Kashmir Valley,” Aamir Ali, coordinator of Natural Disaster Management Cell, said. He said the epicentre of the tremor was in the Hindukush region.
NEW DELHI: Keen to put its house in order in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh after the Assembly poll debacle, the Congress leadership is mulling organisational changes in the two states and contemplating ways to energise workers for upcoming electoral battles in Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka. Congress sources said party president Sonia Gandhi was taking feedback from leaders in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to galvanise the party but had not yet decided on a change of guard in the two states. Both Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi have offered to resign, taking moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the assembly polls earlier this year. While the Congress failed to return to power in Punjab, it barely managed to improve its tally in the Uttar Pradesh assembly. The two states together have 93 MPs in the Lok Sabha. Congress sources said detractors of Amarinder Singh have started making demands for his replacement with “a younger and more accessible” leader. Many of them have met party president Sonia Gandhi and told her that the
party needed a leader who can protest on the streets in the face of victimisation of party workers. Pressing for a younger leader, some Congress members have also told the party’s national leadership that Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, 49, had
emerged as a key strategist of the SAD. “A sizable percentage of voters in Punjab is young. We need a young leader to take on the Akali Dal. We have to work on rebuilding our base, particularly among the Dalits and minorities in the state,”
a party leader said on condition of anonymity. However, supporters of Amarinder Singh have told the leadership that he remains the best bet to take on the Akali Dal. Party MP Partap Singh Bajwa and former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar are being mentioned in party circles as possible replacements of Amarinder Singh if the central leadership decides to effect a change. The Congress has named Sunil Jhakhar as the new leader of the legislature party in the state. Sonia Gandhi has also been getting feedback from the MPs of Uttar Pradesh, some of whom have complained about the choice of candidates for the seats falling under their parliamentary constituencies. Party sources said a meeting of party MPs from Uttar Pradesh, scheduled for March 30, was deferred apparently due to fear that the event may turn out to be stormy. “Several MPs are waiting for an opportunity to vent their feelings. Some have questions about the party’s last-minute announcement of job quotas for minorities and conflicting statements on the Batla house encounter,” a party leader from the state said. He said the Congress should now strive to be the main voice of IANS opposition against the SP.
Child’s tooth can save her life AKAI NEKKO
Azera Parveen Rahman
NEW DELHI: Is your child about to lose her milk tooth? Instead of throwing it away, you can now opt to use it to harvest stem cells in a dental stem cell bank for future use in the face of serious ailments. Now that’s a tooth fairy story coming to life. Still relatively new in India, dental stem cell banking is fast gaining popularity as a more viable option over umbilical cord blood banking. Stem cell therapy involves a kind of intervention strategy in which healthy, new cells are introduced into a damaged tissue to treat a disease or an injury. “The umbilical cord is a good source for blood-related cells, or hematopoietic cells, which can be used for blood-related diseases, like leukaemia (blood can-
cer). Having said that, bloodrelated disorders constitute only four percent of all diseases,” Shailesh Gadre, founder and managing director of the company Stemade Biotech, told IANS. “For the rest of the 96 percent tissue-related diseases, the tooth is a good source of mesenchymal (tissue-related) stem cells. These cells have potential application in all other tissues of the body, for instance, the brain, in case of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; the eye (corneal reconstruction), liver (cirrhosis), pancreas (diabetes), bone (fractures, reconstruction), skin and the like,” he said. Mesenchymal cells can also be used to regenerate cardiac cells. Dental stem cell banking also has an advantage when it comes to the process of obtain-
ing stem cells. “Obtaining stem cells from the tooth is a non-invasive procedure that requires no surgery, with little or no pain. A child, in the age group of 5-12, is any way going to lose his milk tooth. So when it’s a little shaky, it can be collected with hardly any discomfort,” Savita Menon, a paedodontist, said. “Moreover, in a number of cases, when an adolescent needs braces, the doctor recommends that his pre-molars be removed. These can also be used as a source for stem cells. And over and above that, an adult’s wisdom tooth can also be used for the same purpose,” Gadre added. Therefore, unlike umbilical cord blood banking which gives one just one chance — during birth — the window of opportunity in dental stem cell banking is much bigger.

$640 mn lottery mania hits US
A
cross the country, Americans plunked down an estimated $1.5 billion on the longest of long shots: an infinitesimally small chance to win what could end up being the single biggest lottery payout the world has ever seen. The numbers drawn on Friday night in Atlanta were 2-423-38-46, Mega Ball 23. Lottery officials expected to release details about possible winners a couple of hours after the 11pm Eastern drawing. It was frenzy on Friday for Americans hoping to win what was described as “the world’s largest jackpot” of $640 million in an historic lottery. The chance to get suddenly very, very rich — even if it was
only a one-in-176-million chance — sparked feverish ticket sales at convenience stores and news kiosks across the United States ahead of the 11:00pm (0300 GMT) drawing for the Mega Millions prize. There was plenty of fantasizing too on the airwaves and in newspapers about life after winning the monstrous jackpot — a fantasy all the more powerful in a country with a weak jobs market and still spooked about recession. The tickets made it unequivocally clear: this was nothing less than “the world’s largest jackpot.” But it really was a fantasy: the chances of scoring the winning number weren’t the same as being killed by lightning — they were considerably lower.
The jackpot hit a record level because no one had matched the magic five numbers and Mega Ball since January 24 — a full 18 drawings with no winner. Given the pace of the ticket buying, the jackpot was climbing inexorably higher as the day

Here in New York, there are too many people,” said Romanian immigrant Cosmin Barbos, 37. Barbos, who does maintenance at a Manhattan law office, said he’d give most of his fortune to charity. Roger Sierra, a 32-yearold chef, said he’d give half. Although tickets cost only $1, the odds were so long that snapping them up in bulk would be of little use.

Activists to march again for Zimmerman arrest
SANFORD: After a week of demonstrations nationwide, as well as calls for justice and an uproar over hoodies on Capitol Hill, the focus of the Trayvon Martin saga on Saturday will
once again return to the Florida city where it all began. Thousands of activists are expected to turn out for a Saturday morning march to the headquarters of the Sanford Police Department, whose members have faced extensive criticism for not arresting the 17-year-old Martin’s shooter, George Zimmerman. On February 26, Zimmerman has said, he killed Martin in self-defence in a gated community in that central Florida city. He told police that the teen punched him and slammed his head on the sidewalk before the fatal shooting.

And while Spurs fans may have at first jeered him for perceived time-wasting, once realisation dawned that he was really in serious trouble, supporters of both teams banded together as shock reverberated across the stadium. Then this morning we woke to the news that Aston Villa stalwart Martin Petrov had been diagnosed with leukaemia. It’s hard to fathom footballers suffering life-threatening ailments, seeing as they need to be supremely fit to play the sport. But both these events drive home the fact that they too are human and prone to diseases all of us can get. The footballing fraternity will emerge from this devastating time, hopefully, wiser, and more tolerant. It’s time the sport put to bed the spectre of racism and boorishness hanging over its head, and through Muamba and Petrov (both will hopefully make full recoveries) channel the best of the beautiful game.
WHY WE LOVE... Lotteries At the time of going to print, across America, screams of joy and anguish could be heard. As the numbers, for what is now claimed to be the richest lottery in history, were being called out, an entire nation held its breath wondering if they would win a slice of the $640 million Mega Millions prize. Though the chances of winning the whole shebang are astronomical, for the first time in years, the American news cycle might just be devoted to some good news for a change.

A
s a kid, I used to stress a great deal about how to fool my more-sensible, moremature older sister on April Fool’s Day. The pranks included jumping up from the couch and screaming: “Look, cockroach”; or hiding behind the door and screaming “boo” when she walked into the room. She laughed along if the joke was mild. But if the prank shook her out of her comfort zone, she would let me have a piece of her mind and I would be forced to sulk and walk away. April Fool’s Day has lost significance for me with every
passing year. It became more of a pain to be endured when I started working as a journalist and was approached for ideas on how to make a light-hearted feature about this popular, nonserious day. Agreed, it’s not a day to be taken seriously (despite what the Internet pages say about why it was started, and a great tradition associated with this day). But when I sit back and wonder what could be so fascinating about this day, I can’t help but think of the laughter, glee and excitement this day has generated – especially for the person who successfully pulled off a prank and can point at the victim and say with satisfaction: “April Fool!” This day is, perhaps, a reminder that life is not to be taken so seriously after all. We’re going to anyway all end up somewhere else, and we
don’t even know where that is. This life, for all the time we spent here, is to be spent laughing, joking, pulling pranks on each other and easing up on life’s pressures. There’s also something fascinating about being a fool. Fools can walk into unfamiliar situations without the apprehensions of everything that can go wrong. Fools plunge in with both feet and then figure their way around. Fools first do; then think. Fools are also the ones with the most experiences and the most number of tales to share. They wise up and aren’t half as interesting as when they were with a more open outlook to life and willing to experience, share, witness, listen, taste and smell. The Fool, in the Tarot card set, is one with the carte blanche and is looking forward to life with child-like enthusiasm. He’s ready to plunge in,
except he doesn’t even know how he is supposed to prepare for life or if he needs to prepare at all. Preparation leads to expectation – we expect better results from our actions, and those around us expect us to fare better. But being blissfully ignorant has the ability to spring surprises, to take us unawares, to shock us and make us experience life to the full. I don’t know what the significance of April Fool’s Day is. But I think it might be the best tribute to the fool who knows better. Maybe I will play a few pranks on my older sister this time, after all. It might serve as good reminders to us both that life is also about these small pleasures, giggles and meaningless laughs. Sumaa Tekur is a Bangalore-based commentator.

Is Iran using hackers to attack the foreign press? Web Wizard JEB BOONE
I
n an ironic twist, the BBC is reporting that its network came under a distributed denial of service attack launched from Iran, the same method used by hacktivists to disable websites used, in their eyes, to stifle free speech. As part of a campaign of crackdown against the press, Iran has reportedly started attacking news outlets using techniques more commonly associated with hacker collectives than with governments. These techniques include distributed denial of service attacks, the method favoured by hackers to disable websites. The BBC said on Thursday it was targeted in an Iran-based cyber-attack on March 1. Thought to be a DDoS attack, some parts of the BBC were unable to access their email or other Internet services. BBC Director General Mark Thompson said the Internet attack "coincided with efforts to jam two of the service's satellite feeds into Iran."
The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that Iran has often targeted BBC Persianlanguage news services in the past, jamming satellite signals and harassing BBC staff members and their relatives in Iran. Reporters Without Borders has released a comprehensive list of the “enemies of the Internet” — countries that have taken steps to stifle web freedom around the world. The list also includes countries that have been declared “under surveillance,” meaning that they are at risk of becoming full-fledged enemies of the Internet if their censorship activities do not cease. The report focuses on the Arab Spring and how social media can be used as a tool for liberation and revolution, not to just chat with friends and share pictures. “Online social networks complicate matters for authoritarian regimes that are trying to suppress unwanted news and information,” says the report. “It was thanks to netizens that Tunisians learned about the street vendor who set himself on fire in Sidi Bouzid and Egyptians learned about Khaled Said, the young netizen who was
beaten to death by police outside an Alexandria Internet café. It was thanks to social networks that Sidi Bouzid and Khaled Said became news stories and went on to become cornerstones of the Arab Spring.” The list of enemies include North Korea and China, famous for its “Great Firewall,” used to keep Chinese Internet users from visiting sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Tumblr. Countries added to the “under surveillance” list include Egypt, Australia and France. Bahrain was also upgraded from “under surveillance” to enemy status in the report, citing violent crackdowns on bloggers as well as the death of
Zakariya Rashid Hassan, who died in custody in Bahrain a week after he was arrested on charges of inciting hatred, disseminating false news and calling for the overthrow of the government in online forums. The report says that Bahrain has succeeded in creating a news blackout thanks to a combination of technical, judicial and physical censorship methods. Reporters Without Borders says that the Arab Spring has highlighted the importance and need for worldwide Internet freedom as it provides people with a means to free themselves from oppressive regimes or pressure governments into protecting the rights of their people.
"The Internet and social networks have been conclusively established as tools for protest, campaigning and circulating information, and as vehicles for freedom. More than ever before, online freedom of expression is now a major foreign and domestic policy issue," read the report. Ironically, hacker collectives likes Anonymous have often used DDoS attacks to support the freedom of information, retaliating against websites like PayPal and Visa in defence of Wikileaks, for example. Now, Iran is using the same method but with the intent of stifling the press instead of freeing it. Other news outlets have suggested, with little evidence, that Iran fields a “Cyber Army” in the Revolutionary Guard in 2010 with the intention of launching cyber-attacks against the US. Last month, in their “Enemies of the Internet” report, Reporters Without Borders noted that Iranian authorities had devised techniques for blocking ports used by VPNs, a tool that would enable Iranian Internet users to bypass government web filtering. oliticians, diplomats and members of the press were shocked when three young, topless protesters were arrested in January at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. They marched down streets holding signs that said ‘Poor because of you’, attempted to climb over chain-link fences into private areas, and screamed at police. The public couldn't look away. That was Femen. Nude protests aren't new. In fact, activists have been using nudity as a tactic for hundreds of years. But with revolutions springing up left and right all over the world, the shock factor of nakedness or ‘slutty’ clothing certainly makes the nude movement stand out from the others. And the clotheslessness of the people involved makes one realize how different each of these issues is from the others — and the
clarity of the one, big, blanket issue permeating the globe right now; women want their rights, and they'll do anything to get their voices heard. The nude revolution is actually brilliant. These women feel no one is listening to their stories and their pain. They are underrepresented in government and marginalised in society. They make less money. Sometimes they can't legally drive. And it seems regular old marching and sign-carrying isn't doing the trick to get the powers that be (men) to pay attention. So how else can women get men to listen and pay attention? They take their tops off. Women's rights aren't just a problem in the East, obviously. Even in Western culture, nudity is thought of as ‘dirty’ and women aren't legally allowed to sunbathe topless in a number of Western countries. It's the understanding of this larger issue that brings all these disparate issues-based movements together. "The mission of the Femen movement is to create the most favourable conditions for the young women to join up into a social group with the idea of mutual support.”

Failure in business is not the end of life For Anil establishing a business was a dream that he fulfilled with sheer hard work. But he had a backup plan up his sleeve, in case things didn’t work out

Anil Kumar, founder, Great Sports Infra
s an ambitious 18 year old, Anil Kumar had just one dream — to start his own business. He wanted to strike out on his own and establish a success empire. With this aim he completed his MBA and worked with leading companies like Ramco Systems and Wipro. Eventually, in 2004, he set up Great Sports Infra, a company that installs synthetic turf (artificial grass) in lawns and football grounds in the Country. What began as a small start-up eight years back has now grown and had a turnover of `12 crore last fiscal. Anil says, “I was leading the ERP (Enterprise resource planning) line team at Ramco, USA when I began planning this business in 2003. I was hunting for good opportunities in India and went through nearly 100 concepts, assessing their suitability to start in India. The idea was to introduce a something new in the Indian market, or something that had not been successful before. The following year I returned to India to launch Great Sports Infra.” Despite this big leap, Anil was not over confident about the viability of his venture. He was testing waters initially. “Initially I invested `50 lakh with some help from family, friends and personal savings. I had already
decided that I would call it quits if the venture did not work out or if I finished my initial investment. I knew it would take 12-18 months before the sales could actually pick up. I made the necessary financial arrangements accordingly. Marketing took up a majority of the funds and I knew that none of these would come back if I failed,” says Anil. He adds, “I always knew that if I lost all my investments, it would not be the end of life. I had other financial support to lead life. I had decided that if this didn’t work out, I would return to the job where I had already made my mark. It was all about giving the business two years’ time.” As expected, the business didn’t hit it off immediately. “The initial response from customers was slow, but we were honest with them. We never said
Work is an important component of life, not the entire life this is better than natural grass. We marketed it as an alternative to it. We knew this grass would fit perfectly in areas with heavy foot traffic, rocky terrain and roof tops. You spend far more to maintain natural grass than the artificial grass. The customer also need not worry for 20 years once it is installed,” says Anil. Gradually, the business picked up and the company flourished. The business had a break even in 18 months of its inception and growing at 40-50 per cent every year. It has a 70
per cent market share in the country. Great Sports Infra has installed turf at 13 football grounds and 3,300 homes which include homes of celebrities like Mukesh Ambani and Chiranjeevi. They are now aiming for a `18 crore turnover this year. Talking about his future plans, Anil says, “This is a large market. We have only installed synthetic turf at 3,300 homes, and there are another 10 lakh to go. We can cater to large customer bases like hospitals, showrooms, corporate offices etc.” Striking a balance is of the utmost importance for Anil. He says, “I laid a lot of emphasis on striking a balance between my work and personal lives. I used to work almost 18 hours a day in the initial years of business. I could never sleep in peace because I had a lot on my mind. But now I give my family time as well. We go on holidays together and I also set time aside to exercise and stay physically fit. Once I get back home, I stop thinking of work, except if it is an important call or message. Work is an important component of life, not the entire life.” For this auto enthusiast, owning a Chevrolet Captiva was a dream and now he is proud to drive one. Apart from that he loves reading and listening music by Lucky Ali, Ilayaraja and Rahat Fateh Ali khan. Anil has another passion — he loves collecting liquor miniatures. He proudly says, “I have close to 500 whisky miniatures. I collected them from 25 different countries. I may take to it as a full time job once I retire,” he laughs.

s a childhood dream I have always wanted to own a Rolls-Royce. For many of us, this is the car we’d love to retire into. That is exactly what Sir Henry Royce, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, aimed to achieve with his cars. On that note, let’s take a peek into the top-five luxury cars in the Indian market
ROLLS-ROYCE DROPHEAD COUPE
The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is a unique way to travel, perhaps more like a beautifully built water craft than a car. It’s hard not to get noticed when you drive it — it is about as inconspicuous as appearing on television. The 6.75 litre V12 is gorgeously sumptuous. Take the wind in with the roof down, and with the roof up it is refined and quiet, a cocoon from the evil storms. Winning the lottery isn’t enough – you need a high level of assured unflappability to pilot what is basically a yacht, complete with decking. That is a typical Rolls Royce for you.
Ex-showroom price- `4.10 crore
M AYBACH 62
While it may not quite match up to the stature of a Rolls, what you get in a Maybach 62 is phenomenal. There is an extremely high-quality perfume atomiser available on request, having been developed exclusively by Maybach. Add to the list a highresolution 19-inch cinema screen fitted to the center of the partition, an overview camera through which the passengers in the rear are able to keep an eye on the traffic in front of them without being seen themselves. Not to mention the opaque partition window and reclining seats. That’s the beauty of a Maybach. Ex-showroom price- `5.10 crore
M ASERATI QUATTROPORTE GT S
Certain things just sound sexier in other languages, like fancy French perfumes labelled eau de toilette and fancy Italian "fourdoor" luxury sedans called "Quattroporte." But the Maserati Quattroporte GT S is more than just a
sexy name; it's a beautiful, performance-oriented Italian luxury car endowed with ample power, sharp handling and two impressive transmissions that make it the closest thing you can get to a Ferrari sedan. The fact that the Maserati and Ferrari are sister companies makes that more than just a metaphor. Ex-showroom price- `3 crore
BENTLEY MULSANNE
If your idea of luxury motoring is driving one of the biggest and most powerful sedans on the market, then the Bentley Mulsanne should be near the top of your must-have list. The Mulsanne is unashamedly big, and rightly so considering it is the flagship of the luxurious Bentley marque. The Mulsanne is a car that covers lots of super-luxury bases. It is neither as ultimately wafty in the rear as the Rolls Phantom, nor as encouraging as the Ghost, yet somewhere in between. You can lounge in the back
or drive and be satisfied. But the best bit? This Mulsanne does not feel like anything else on the market. It's not a gussied up A8, or a tweaked out Phaeton. It's a Bentley before anything else. And for that, we give high praise indeed. Ex-showroom price- `3 crore
JAGUAR XJ
This is how British one can get without being James Bond. In the full-size luxury sedan segment there’s a small but great selection to choose from. If you’re looking for all the luxury and legroom
The world’s best car makers have always had legendary stories about their models and their owners. Cofounder of Rolls Royce, Sir Henry Royce celebrated his 79th birthday this week and what better way to pay tribute to the man than look at the best luxury liners in the market you could ever need, without buying a multi-crore Bentley or Rolls-Royce, then something like the Jaguar XJ will be ideal. It competes with the flagship sedan models from Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, but the Jaguar stands out from the crowd, not from old-world styling like that which plagued its predecessor, but from its avant-garde lines and British charm. ipsy, our cocker spaniel was acting very funny when we were packing our stuff to move out. She constantly came between our legs, started yelping and was running about the house at a mad pace. We just could not figure out the reason for her bizarre behaviour," shares Anupriya, who also has a German Shepherd. Anupriya and her family were shifting to another part of the city. Later, at the vet’s they learnt that Tipsy was being anxious because of the moving process. Anupriya was a first-time pet owner then. And like her, there are many pet owners who are unaware of the effects shifting has on pets. Be it for short distances or long-distances pets such as birds, dogs and cats need special attention. Sujit Nair loves his goldenhaired Labrador Tyson to bits. No flights from Pune allow you to take dogs on them and so when it came to shifting base from Pune to Bengaluru, Tyson came with him on the train. Sujit was required to leave the dog at the end of the compartment along with the other canines and to his surprise Tyson refused to acknowledge his presence even and was quite irritated at being left alone in a cage. “I made sure that when we reached the house I made it up to him and I had to ensure I take an independent house on rent in Bengaluru, as he is used to a lot of space to play around. He was certainly not sad about relocating. The first thing he did was to sniff around and mark his territory in the new place. In fact, he liked it even more, as I got another dog to keep him company,”

So she had to take Lucy by flight. “Lucy was growing very anxious as the time came for us to leave, she was pawing and mewing continuously and would not allow any of the officials to touch her, ultimately we managed to get her into the carrier. I took her to the vet for treatment, but, yes, shifting with pets should be done with utmost care.” So whether you are moving down the street or across the country, it is important to that you have a proper plan. Also keep in mind to have a vet’s number on the speed dial to meet any emergencies. n Let your pet travel on an empty stomach if it is a long journey. If it is more than an hour’s journey most airlines will require you to sedate the pet. However, most doctors will not recommend sedation as an option. n Also remember to have your pet’s health certificate in hand.
mind when shifting houses is whether your new home is going to be pet-friendly. Anxiety is a natural symptom, as the pet senses something is going to change. In some cases vets do advise herbal medicines for anxiety problem in pets. The most common aftereffect of shifting is that pets stop eating. Some pets needs monitoring, especially if they are not accustomed to travelling long distances. While travelling by road, some dogs may start to hyperventilate because of the stress. Excessive panting can lead to a lot of health problems. Make sure to carry plenty of water for them. One must try and familiarise each and every corner of the new house with the pet. Give it time to settle in and make sure to keep an eye on it in case it tries to go back to the old house. KIM

uzanne Bugler's The Child Inside is an intense novel with emotions running high. The protagonist, Rachel Morgan, is unable to cope with the loss of her stillborn daughter even 10 years after the disaster hit her and her family. In a bid to help each other get over the pain, her family unfortunately falls apart. The only string that binds her and her husband, Andrew is their son Jonathan whom they shower with all their love and attention. But this kid does not seem to bring solace to her aching heart as he leaves no stone unturned in displaying his resentment towards her. All through the novel, the only thing that Rachel seems to long for is love and this, she feels, she does not receive from anyone in her life. A chance encounter one evening with an old woman reminds her of her friend, Vanessa, whom she lost at the age of 16. Now, at 40, Rachel realises that she is yet to get over the loss of Vanessa and
decided to seek out Vanessa's family members. In her search for Vanessa she meets Simon, Vanessa’s married brother and one thing leads to another and two end up having an affair and Rachel becomes pregnant. During these trying times, she is
left in the lurch by Simon shattering her even further. The remainder of the story traces her life and the decisions she has to make. While the reader's heart goes out to Rachel on more than one occasion, there are those times

The essay starts with the travails a young Kushal had to go through to be the man he is today… footballer, then sports journalist and later a lensman for a leading daily in Calcutta from 1982 to 1990.
Football plays an immense role in Kushal's life. Kunal shows how passionate Kushal was about Pele: He’d learned the bicycle kick by thumbing through the step-bystep guide Play football with Pele, having badgered his father to buy him a copy for 100 rupees. But it was Pele’s autobiography, ‘My life and the beautiful game’, that moved him the most. At first he needed a dictionary to read the 350 pages. Then he read them over and over again till he could

If it’s too big to kick, trade it in for something smaller and kick that.’ It was through the beautiful game that he met Manju Chatterjee who became his ‘family’ for the next few years. Kushal played football with her nephew Apurba. About this time the shutter bug bit him, a stolen

moment of pleasure he got from clicking a picture with his brother's camera. There was no looking back since. At Apurba’s place in Kalighat, Kushal’s creativity and imagination, stoked by Manju’s ardent admiration, flourished. It was a special bond, not just because they shared ideas, but because they shared the same illnesses as well. Both suffered from tuberculosis. The Chatterjees became his muse. He captured their daily life… from the family’s lounging around, reading papers to applying make-up and the activity that surrounded taking care of Munni, Apurba’s ailing and old grandmother. The last picture in the book is the most poignant: Manju on her deathbed. Kushal recalls, “It broke my heart to click that picture.”

magine having to tell a sixyear-old kid that he will never have to combat JK Rowling’s soul-sucking dementors or for that matter that they do not exist at all. Pretty difficult isn’t it? But this is the norm today, the inspiration for many of the so-called children’s stories. Children are exposed to unprecedented amounts of adult reality in the books they read, sometimes even without the cover of fantasy or, in any way, sugar-coated. The latest example is Hunger Games. No, it’s not a cooking reality show. It is apparently a book meant for children and young adults. But would you really want your kids reading about a bunch of children brutally kill each other? Is it the sort of literature you would want your child to be exposed to? Shalini Shankaran, a housewife and a mother of two answers this question for us. “I try my best to read whatever my
children are reading. I have an eight-year-old son and an 11year-old daughter. I must confess children’s literature is no longer what it used to be. Writers like Rudyard Kipling, Lewis Caroll thought from the children’s point of view and their stories were a delight to read. There the big bad world always remained couched in magic, the evil was always hidden but in today’s stories, that is not so; here it is the adult anxieties and fear that take precedence over children’s fantasies.” If one were to go through the recent books for children, one finds that many of the authors seem to go the dark way following the example of JK Rowling. The author herself has described her stories as being largely about death, where often the child is greeted with the prospect of a parent dying or a lost sibling or the child hero living in dangerous conditions. Has the child’s world been limited to all this? Gone are the days when children’s stories had houses made of chocolates and rivers of honey. It’s hard to imagine writers like Enid Blyton, CS Lewis writ-
I am currently having an email conversation with a nine-year-old who is fascinated by Shahjahan and how his sons went to war for the throne. What is interesting is that he is not shocked at brother killing brother for power. He seems to accept that it happens in this world. Subhadra Sen Gupta, Author ing this way. They were as passionate about their young readers as they were about the subjects they wrote. We ask Subhadra Das Gupta, an author of children’s books, about how much of reality is needed in children’s books. She says, “One of the things I have to be careful about is identifying exactly the correct age group for each book. The four-to-seven age group is
really still in the realm of fairy stories and folk tales. By the time a child is getting to Class IV (eight+ years) they are beginning to question, notice and also judge. So reality can be woven in but not in a stark manner. Not, for instance the death of a parent, something that they can still not imagine or handle. Oddly enough gory stuff like monsters, floating skeletons and ghosts work fine!” She adds, “Kids write to me and right now I am having a very interesting email conversation with a nine-year-old who is fascinated by Shahjahan and how his sons went to war for the throne. What is interesting is that he is not shocked at a brother killing brother for power. He seems to accept that it happens in this world. Reality is all around them, they see bomb blasts, many see violence at home, so I don’t believe books should be sanitised. It is how you deal with it, very, very carefully explaining all the time. Also, I like to end a story on a hopeful note, good triumphs over evil every time. For a tragic ending, you need a 15+ reader, they can handle that.”
Dr Kalyan Chakravarty, a child psychiatrist at Rainbow Hospital shares with us his experience with a patient, “Recently a child came, he was frightened and was exhibiting quite bizarre, his upper lip was quivering and he was going into a dream like stance. During therapy I found that he was reading a book, a mixture of fiction and fantasy. He was so affected by its contents that he started to imagine their existence and that he too could have the powers himself and that murdering and killing is norm.” This is just one example, he says. “Before eight, children are unaware of birth and death. Children’s books nowadays are creating confusion in their minds. They get a wrong idea of things and with a skewed mindset might take up premature decisions as teenagers and this has been proved in studies,” he says. Gone are the days when children’s books remained a haven for the imagination to grow and prosper. It is the reality of our everyday lives which leaps out at them, through the colourless pages of text.

INDRA NOOYI, PEPSI CO.
SAFRA C ATZ, ORACLE
As president and CFO of Oracle, Safra Catz leads the pack of the corporate honchos, having raked in a whopping $42 million in total compensation last year. At 49, she is considered one of the most powerful women in the world. Her story proves that persistence pays. She has been at Oracle Corporation since April 1999 and steadily climbed her way up the ladder until she became president in 2001.
WELLINGTON DENAHANNORRIS, ANNALY C APITAL Even a Bachelors degree in Arts can get you a long way if you the smarts as Wellington DenahanNorris proves. At 47, she is the Vice Chairman, Chief Investment Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Annaly Capital Management, Inc. Which means that she takes home an estimated total compensation of $23 million.
C AROL MEYROWITZ, TJX
You may not have heard of TJX Companies, Inc. but the US retailer is making its CEO and Director Carol Meyrowitz a truck load of money. At 57, Meyrowitz ended the fiscal year with a total calculated compensation of $23 million. Interestingly, she got her start as an assistant buyer at Saks Fifth Avenue just after college.
SUSAN IVEY, REYNOLDS A MERICAN
This 51-year-old has spent over 25 years in the business. Now, the chairman, CEO and president of Reynolds American (no, not the Reynolds like the pens but the tobacco) she came up the brilliant idea of selling not just cigarettes, but also including in her company's portfolio quitting aids like Niconovum AB, nicotine gum, mouth spray etc. Which is perhaps why its no surprise, she makes about $16.8 million every year.
M ARINA ARMSTRONG, GYMBOREE CORP
Thought you could never make money if you are into HR. Marina Amstrong, Senior Vice President, Human Resources can tell you otherwise. At 47, Marina can give any man competition with an annual compensation of $16.4 million.
M ARTINE ROTHBLATT, UNITED THERAUPETICS CORP.
Founder and CEO of United Therapeutics, Rothblatt is known for having done ground breaking work in the fields of communication satellite law, and eventually in life sciences projects like the Human Genome Project. Incidentally, until 1994 Martine was a different person altogether. Literally. A gender reassignment surgery enabled him to changed into Martine. But man or woman, Martin(e) is very rich, raking in a cool $16 million a year.
LAURA J ALBER, WILLIAMS-SONOMA, INC.
SHONA BROWN, GOOGLE
Can there ever be a list of the rich and the mighty without a mention of Google. Senior Vice President, Business Operations Shona Brown's academic qualifications alone would boggle your mind. She holds a Ph.D. and Post-Doctorate in industrial engineering from Stanford University, an MA from Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar no less), and a BSc in computers from Carleton University. Anybody surprised? She rakes in an estimated $16.2 million a year.
In 2009 and 10, Fortune magazine voted her the most powerful businesswoman in the world. And no wonder, considering that not seven years after she joined the company, Indra Krishanmurthy Nooyi was named president and later the chairman and CEO of the second largest food & beverage business in the world, Pepsi Co. At 55, Nooyi, after having recently received a hike of 5.8 per cent taking her total compensation in 2011 to $17 million. Talk about inspiring!
INA DREW, JP MORGAN CHASE & CO. She is currently the head of its Global treasury, and CIO at JP Morgan. Ina Drew makes about $15.9 m in 2010. Need we say more?
So, a company making pottern barn products can’t be among the most successful brands in the world, right? Wrong. Laura J Albert, the Director, President and CEO of Williams-Sonoma, Inc. can go on to prove it. Keeping its 20,000-plus associates focused on delivering world-class service to its customers, Laura has carved a niche for herself, not to mention a fat pay cheque. Estimated to be worth over $13.5 million at last count.

I
am 20. I have an elder brother. He is 25, but my parents instead of thinking of his marriage are looking out for alliances for me. They say my stars are in such a position that I cannot get married if not in this year. I do not believe this . But how to convince my parents? I am at my wits end.
BRAIN-SIZING FRIENDS
Dear troubled kid, When will the movies come in handy? Haven’t you seen the innumerable scenes where the astrologer is paid a few extra bucks to change the alignment of the stars in the favour of the couple or the evil scheming relatives? Take a cue from this and increase your ‘longevity’. Or else you can have a heart-to-heart with your parents and tell them to shift their priorities and even better pack your bags and go for a Europe tours.
R
esearchers are suggesting that there is a link between the number of friends you have and the size of the region of the brain – known as the orbital prefrontal cortex – that is found just above the eyes. A new study shows that this brain region is bigger in people who have a larger number of friendships. Their study is published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Mum, not monster-in-law Many imagine that the man’s mother is the cause of all misery. But many of those who have experienced the relationship in real life know differently ANUBHA K SINGH
anubha.k@postnoon.com
O
ften the mother-in-lawdaughter-in-law relationship’s on-screen portrayal is like that of a volcano that could erupt anytime. Right from Tu Tu Main Main to Diya Aur Bati Hum, these soaps focus on the strained relationship that they share and in the midst of it all, there is the son who is seen desperately trying to please both women. Of late though, the saasbahu sagas are changing. The new serial tackling this issue is Kairi, which is soon to air on Colors. It has a different take to it. Here, the saas-bahu relationship is warm. Take my example. For me my
mother-in-law is just like my mother. She takes care of me and we share a great relationship. Every day after work, I share what happened in office with her and she does the same. She really misses me when I am not around. Sometimes, even if I am at work, she gives me a call to check whether I had my lunch on time. Our relationship is mostly devoid of squabbles. Kavita Gupta, a school-teacher, tells us about her relationship with her mum-in-law, “I had an arranged marriage and like any other girl, I was scared of what kind of equation I will share with my mother-in-law. Lots of questions were running in my head: Will I be able to adjust with her? Will she be kind to me? Will she be the same as shown on TV? But today, after four years of marriage, I can proudly say that she is the best. She treats me like her own daughter and I treat her like my
mother. I feel proud and happy when our neighbours say that we are a perfect jodi of saasbahu.” I strongly believe that there’s no fixed formula for an ideal saas-bahu relationship. Your relationship with your in-laws can be great. It all depends on how you want it to be. I always seek my mother-in-law’s advice when I face a hurdle. I try to be part of her happiness and sorrows, and we believe that we are best friends. We know that openness, forgiveness, compassion and love is all that matters, and ignoring differences can help strengthen the bond. I feel lucky and blessed to have an understanding and educated mother-in law who supports me completely whenever I need her and knows the dynamics, as she is a school teacher. “Initially, I did counter problems with my mother-in-law but as time passed, I realised that if
I want her to be like my mother, even I need to be like her daughter. Unlike a mother-daughter bond which starts from birth, the relationship with in-laws forms only after marriage. It needs careful nurturing to make it strong. We share a healthy relationship now and are more like friends,” said Vandana J, a consultant. In my opinion, to maintain a healthy and sweet bond, first erase the image that your mother-in-law is the ‘killjoy’ in your life. When two people of different temperaments stay in one place, differences are bound to pop-up. But don’t make trivial things a big issue. Clarify misunderstandings whenever required. Give each other space. And don’t forget you both love and care about the same man and there is no need to compete with each other. Remember that both of you are equally important for him. Give it a try.
arriage is a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution yet - Mae West As I mentioned before, living the single life doesn’t mean never getting involved in a relationship. In fact, relationships are vital to being single because without them singlehood would quite frankly suck! The first thing my friends ask me when they hear I’ve met a new man is how long he’s here for. They seem to think that a relationship that doesn’t have a future is bad and don’t understand my tendency for shortterm relationships. It’s not as if I make a deliberate choice to date men who aren’t going to be in for the long-haul and to be honest, it used to frustrate the hell out of me too, but the more I’ve come to enjoy living the single life, the more I can see the benefits of short term relationships. Firstly, I don’t need to worry about whether Mr Right-Now ticks all the boxes I would want in the person I want to spend the rest of my life with and secondly, if I know that the relationship isn’t going anywhere there is a lot less pressure to be the so called ‘perfect girlfriend’. The beauty of Mr RightNow is that he can be that fun but flaky guy you’ve always wanted to date but avoided like the plague to prevent a broken heart. If you have it clear in your mind from the get-go that it’s only for a few weeks/months, letting go is much easier than a break-up from a long-term relationship. Of course, on very rare occasions, that short-term relationship throws you a curve ball and that man you thought was going to be good for a few laughs actually turns out to be the man of your dreams and then, to be honest, you’re screwed but at the end of the day real happiness comes along so rarely in life that it’s worth grabbing onto with both hands and embracing it for however long it lasts.

is a depressing film which pitches two people, who are madly in love with each other, in a strange situation which leads to a harrowing climax. Most part of the film has an undercurrent ‘what is the price you are ready to pay to see the other person happy?’ and it explores the sacrifices which people make to live the life which they always dreamt about. The film focuses on the lives of Ram and Janani who fall in love with each other in their teens and get married a few years later fighting against all odds. First things first, the charm of the film lies in the minute
Pawan Kalyan injured
P
awan Kalyan suffered a minor injury on the sets of his upcoming film Gabbar Singh. A birdie tells us that the actor had a muscle tear while he was performing a horse riding sequence. The shooting was called off soon after this incident. Sources say that this incident will not have any impact on the film’s release date or even the audio launch, which is scheduled in the first week of April. The film unit will soon leave to Europe to film a couple of songs. Shruti Haasan is playing the lead role in the film and Harish Shankar is directing it. Gabbar Singh is slated for release on May 9. Incidentally, Ram Charan Tej had also suffered a muscle tear on the sets of Racha, although he returned to the shoot two weeks later.
details which Aishwarya Dhanush, the director of the film, brings out like the tender love which develops between the protagonists when they are in school or even the first time the couple actually spends time alone. Five years later, when Janani’s parents plan to go to the US, she’s devastated because she can’t live without Ram. It is at this moment, the couple finds the courage to defy all odds. Aishwarya spends a lot of time depicting how much the protagonists are in love with each other and it acts as the perfect backdrop when the inner conflict of Ram takes centrestage in the second half. Dhanush and Shruti Haasan deliver top notch performances.Their onscreen chemistry works quite well and both of them are extremely good when it comes to emotional scenes. The film is narrated in intermittent flashbacks and each
one of these flashbacks unravels a new layer of the protagonists’ lives and struggles. While the film has good content, the second half drags a lot. There’s hardly a comedy scene in the film and at no point of time does the film desperately try to entertain the audience, which is a good thing. Anirudh’s music is noteworthy. 3 is a good debut for Aishwarya Dhanush and it’ll leave a lasting impression on you, if you have an appetite for such films. And it’s much more than just Kolaveri.

Katrina in awe of Yash Chopra A
ctress Katrina Kaif, who is back in town from London after wrapping up a shooting schedule of Yash Chopra’s directorial venture, says she is in awe of the veteran filmmaker’s immensely sharp working style. “You know Yash ji is very senior and everyone used to say how young he is at heart. But you have to look at how sharp he is," Katrina told reporters. “He used to pick up these very small things... like if something was disturbing me or I was not in a good mood, he used to just pick it up and know how to deal with it. So I think he is a very special person and we had an amazing time,” she added. Katrina was in London to work on Chopra’s yet-to-be-titled love story opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan. This is her first project with King Khan, and this is also the first time she is being directed by Chopra, whose last venture behind the camera was Veer Zaara in 2004. Katrina, 27, spoke on the sidelines of the launch of a book based on her film Raajneeti, which presented her in a non-glamourous avatar and in a powerful
role. She didn’t miss the chance to share sweet somethings about her Raajneeti director Prakash Jha too. “One thing I can say about Prakash ji is that with all his knowledge and with all his intellect, he is an extremely intelligent person and extremely knowledgeable... especially on the subjects that he directs... (they) are often very complex subjects, but never for once does he make you feel that you are slightly inferior in anyway to the knowledge of politics or his knowledge of literature,” said Katrina. Last seen in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Katrina is also working with her former boyfriend, actor Salman Khan in IANS Ek Tha Tiger.

he trailer itself tells you the story in about 2.05 minutes; but if you are still keen on watching the film, let me warn you — in it there’s nothing new: just a poor mishmash of Bollywood’s tried and tested formulas. Kunal (Kunal Khemu) is a fresh MBA graduate and life seems just about perfect with his trophy wife, Arzoo (Amrita Puri), and a dream job in one of the biggest diamond export firms in Cape Town. From here on, you don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes, as

Captain Obvious soon takes over the reins. A typical slumdog story, it shows Kunal’s rise and fall in the world of glamour, money and women. The film is a hotchpotch of the patent storyline that the Bhatt fraternity has to offer. Writer Upendra Sidhye’s script is believable but flows sluggishly. Dire-
ctor Vishal Mahadkar manages to squeeze out some good performances from his actors. Accompanying the script are a few soothing numbers, unnecessary in places but hum-worthy. This isn’t Kunal Khemu’s best performance but it can be ignored because he is otherwise a decent actor. Our verdict is that Amrita Puri may not be ready as of yet to be cast in the lead role. The last we saw of her was in Aisha with her everamusing dialogues and perhaps that’s why it’s hard to take her seriously in this one. Manish Choudhary as the devil in the guise of a diamond baron is menacing. So if you have seen the trailer, give it a miss. If you have not, you could very well wait for the film’s television premiere.

But yes, slowly my hair’s greying process is being reversed," said Mishra known for directing films like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Chameli. Hot Yoga, also known as Bikram Yoga, was introduced by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s and one has to do exercises under hot and humid conditions. Sudhir recommends it as the most effective form of exercise. “Ever since I began to practice it I feel a change in me. The hair is just the most noticeable part of it,” he said. IANS

hen studios make sequels, it’s usually because the first was a hit and had the audiences asking for more. But even in the best of franchises, the second and third editions fail to re-create the magic of the original. Consider Transformers, Pirates, Oceans or even the Fast and Furious series. And then sometimes, as in this case, comes sequels of films that shouldn't have been made in the first place, let alone their sequels. In the sequel, Sam Worthington plays Perseus – the demi-god son of Zeus – who, after defeating Kraken at the end of Clash of the Titans, has been for the last 10 years chilling out as a fisherman. But a deadly battle is raging between the gods and the Titans. When Zeus (Liam Neeson) is captured by Hades (Ralph Fiennes), Perseus has no choice but to own up to his demi-god status and rescue his father from Tartarus.
With Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) by his side, he wages a war to overthrow Kronos and save mankind. If the original suffered from unnecessary turns and twists, Wrath of the Titans is ridiculously simplistic. Why this movie should be in 3D, when they are really no breathtaking visual effects in the order, is another question most viewers are likely to be puzzled by. With lacklustre performances, mediocre CGI, a plot with too many loopholes and pseudo serious dialogue, this is a film that takes itself too seriously. To put it simply, Wrath of Titans is at best, an average entertainer and at worst, an expensive farce.

Detachment brings back memories A ctor Adrien Brody missed his old school days while making Detachment, in which he plays a teacher. “Stepping into school, it’s like when you smell something you haven’t smelled in years, and it’s like whoa! It brings back all kinds of memories, whether it’s a good smell or a bad smell," showbizspy.com quoted him as saying. “It floods you with all kinds of stuff that you forgot — the smell, the linoleum, the bad chairs, the long hallways, the drab surroundings, you get it again,” he added.

KAKURO
How to play Kakuro
SCRIBBLING PAD
Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

urray, who got the better of Djokovic in the 2009 title match, reached the final on a walkover when world No. 2 Rafael Nadal pulled out of their semi-final with a sore left knee. World No. 1 Djokovic breezed through his first set in just 27 minutes and appeared to be cruising to a victory when Monaco got hot in a marathon second set which lasted one hour, 36 minutes. It marked the second day in a row Djokovic struggled to finish off an opponent and needed a tiebreaker to clinch it. In the quarter-finals against fifth seed David Ferrer, Djokovic easily won
the first set 6-2 but then stumbled down the stretch before before winning 7-6 (7/1) in the second set. “As I did yesterday in the quarter-finals, I started very strong, just going for the shots, being very aggressive, then I just wasn’t able to close it out,” Djokovic said. “It was a very similar match to the one against Ferrer. “All the credit to him (Monaco) for staying in the match, fighting and coming back,” Djokovic said. “I still think I gave him points. I made so many unforced errors that I got him back into the match. “It was semi-finals. It was never going to be easy. I didn’t expect an easy match and I am just happy to be through.” Djokovic is in his fourth
Miami final and chasing a third title here. He also won in 2007. In 2009, he fell 6-2, 7-5 to Murray. “We all know his talent, his potential, and quality,” Djokovic said of Murray. “He’s dangerous on any surface. Obviously we played the finals in 2009. I lost in straight sets. He likes the conditions. He likes to play in the heat, as well, and has a good serve.” Djokovic, who reached his first final since winning the Australian Open in January, finished with two aces and four double faults against Monaco, stretching his perfect record over the Argentinian to 5-0. Djokovic got off to a flying start, winning all six games in the opening set and clinching it with a cross-court forehand to the open court.
hoping to put seasons hampered by injury behind him, says he’s focusing his 2012 Olympic season efforts on the 100 metres. On a day when Gay held an open workout attended by several media outlets, he told ESPN.com that he doesn’t think his post-injury training allows him to attempt a sprint double. “I’ve had some minor setbacks with nagging injuries,” Gay told ESPN.com. “I’ve been taking it slower, and I don’t have the same quality I wanted to do the double.” Gay’s 2011 season ended in July when he had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum muscle in his hip. He says the injury is healed but adductor muscle strains and inflammation around his pubic bone have cost him training time since November. He has been training on grass rather than on the track in an effort to putt less wear on his body, and doesn’t even know when or if he’ll race before the US Olympic trials at Eugene, Oregon, in June. “Maybe I want to pick a race before trials, or maybe just run at trials and see how it goes,” Gay said. “I’m just not going to have the opportunity to have a lot of races like I normally do.” Gay has endured a frustrating few years, including a hamstring injury in a 200m heat at the 2008 Olympic trials. In 2009 he had a groin injury, followed by last year’s hip injury.

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS: West Indies defeated Australia by 14 runs at Kensington Oval on Friday to win the second Twenty20 international and draw the two-game series 1-1. Chasing a modest 161-run target, Australia were well-set at 75-2 at the halfway stage, but their chase slowed with offbreak bowler Marlon Samuels taking three crucial wickets to dismiss skipper George Bailey (24), Mike Hussey (14) and Matthew Wade (17). Opener David Warner topscored with a 43-ball 58 with five fours and three sixes. Seamer Fidel Edwards, who had dismissed Shane Watson for nought in the first over, returned to turn the screw by getting rid of Daniel Christian and Brett Lee with successive deliveries in the 19th over to finish with three for 23. That left Australia seven

Kieron Pollard took a fine catch in the deep to dismiss David Hussey (19) off the fourth ball with 17 still needed and the game was up as Australia finished on 146 for nine. Bravo had also played a key role in the dismissal of dangerman Warner, running out the opener with a direct hit in the 13th over with the score on 98 for three. “It was a great start from
the West Indies, I think we pulled it back to about par, 160, and I thought we were on course to knock it off,” said Bailey. “They put pressure on us. The wicket of David Warner was huge, run-outs change matches.” West Indies captain Darren Sammy admitted his team should have scored more. “We knew it was a 180-plus pitch. We tried Polly and myself up the order to try and get some momentum — that didn’t work but we kept going,” he said. “The work we’ve been doing in the camp and throughout the series has been paying off and I want to ask the boys to keep doing that. We want to keep doing well in the Tests and hopefully continue the good results.” West Indies squandered a blistering start to be bowled out for just 160. After winning the
toss, West Indies looked good for a huge score when they raced to 65-0 from six overs and 110-2 by the 10th. Openers Dwayne Smith and Johnson Charles got them off to a flying start. Charles made 37 off 21 balls with six fours and a six before he was first man out in the seventh over. Big-hitting Pollard, who had scored a maiden T20 fifty on Tuesday, was caught behind off Lee after making just one in the eighth over with the total on 76. Smith top-scored thanks to a 34-ball innings of 63, which featured six fours and four huge sixes, but once he was caught in the deep off slow bowler Xavier Doherty, the runs dried up. The two sides, who also drew the one-day series 2-2, will now play a three-Test series beginning in Barbados on April AFP 7.
Rory plots Masters revenge AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: Rory McIlroy will have revenge on his mind when he tees up at Augusta National next Thursday a year on from being on the wrong end of a Masters mauling. Leading by four shots going into Sunday’s final round shootout and seemingly on the way to his first Major title at the age of 21, the Irishman was consumed by a tumultous metldown that left him in tears. When the dust had settled, McIlroy had fired an 80 and slumped down the standings to a tie for 15th place as South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel swooped in under the radar to steal the prize. Many at the time wondered what the long-term effect would me on McIlroy of that golfing collapse, but famously he came out eight weeks later to win the US Open by eight shots and since then he has assumed the world number one ranking albeit for just two weeks. McIlroy, currently second behind Luke Donald, believes that ultimately, he may even benefit from the learning experience of letting such a big lead on such a big occasion slip away. “Last year’s Masters was definitely a defining moment for me,” he told europeantour.com. “It could have been a crossroads in my career. “I could have done what I did on Sunday at Augusta and let it affect me and let it get to me, and maybe go into a slump, or get down or feel sorry for myself. “But I had enough good people around me not to let that happen. It was a big crossroads for me in my career, and I was able to go down the right path and put things right by winning the next Major.”
