Exorcists flourish in City CRIME Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

T

he room is dingy and dimly lit and two plastic chairs are placed in it. Some abstract paintings, some with scripts in Arabic and some in Hindi are hung on the wall. The ‘magician’ comes out with a cudgel and the ‘treatment’ of the victim begins. Questions are asked and lashes administered to the ‘devil’ that has seized the person. At the end, the dark soul agrees to leave this person, of course. A scene from the Exorcist? No, it’s very much happening here, in Hyderabad. Black magic (exorcism) reigns and flourishes in the City against which the law is weak. The Internet has several ticklish advertisements asking people to approach them to drive out the devil. In the latest incident, 20year-old-girl Tahseen is reported to have been detained and sexually abused by an exorcist. Relatives of the girl have lodged a complaint with the Deputy Com-

missioner of Police, South Zone. The girl is believed to have been possessed by a bad soul and she was taken to a magician who failed to exorcise the soul. She was

then taken to another one named Ravan (!) who is charged with detaining her and making sexual advances at her. The police have begun investigation. The DCP So-

uth, Manish Kumar Sinha has asked Inspector G Sridhar to probe. Sinha said there are several of them practicing black magic. In July last year, Magic Baba was held on these charges. Earlier, an elderly woman named Nagin was also arrested. Nagin has overseas clients too. The DCP said at least 15 such people were arraigned in the recent past. But quite often it proves a losing game because some people believe in it. “When people believe in this kind of thing, what to do?” wondered the officer. There are Muslims and Hindus in this sphere. They are known and advertised as aamil, guru, tantrik, etc. Two persons claiming to be exorcists in Hafiz Baba Nagar were also held and interrogation revealed that they had a business on the sidelines of providing girls for rich Arab shaikhs. A senior police officer told Postnoon there are at least 200 of these black magicians in the old city, of which 4–5 are well known. The DCP has appealed to the general public not to believe in this crude system any more. Those falling victims could also be booked, he warned.

tudents smoking cigarettes is a common sight now, so much so that many paan dabbas (small kiosks that sell cigarettes, nut powder and other miscellaneous stuff) have cropped up in close vicinity to educational institutions in the city — sometimes even just outside their gates. There is no law that prevents the sale of cigarettes or tobacco within a certain radius of educational institutions and shopkeepers seem to be cashing in on this by selling cigarettes to the students. GHMC prevents liquor shops from opening within a 100 metres from an educational institutions as well as places of worship. However, the same law is not applied to paan dabbas. Principals, teachers and academicians are now worried as there has been a visible increase in cigarette smoking among students. Anju Prasad, public relations officer and lecturer at St. Mary’s College, believes that if paan dab-

“It also gives a wrong impression about the college if its near a paan dabba as some people who come here and smoke may not even be students. The authorities concerned should prevent such shops opening near schools and colleges,” she suggests. Ironically, there is a paan dabba about 30

At this point, it is hard to control them or prevent them from trying out things. School and college-going age is extremely vulnerable and it is easy to fall for such allurements.” Mahnoor suggests that the liquor shop rule should apply to any shop that sells cigarettes or tobacco too. for interrogation. The story behind the news

Bundled up in down jackets, sheepskin coats and felt boots, protesters turned up for their third rally since fraud-tainted December elections in defiance of government calls to ignore the protest and after a long New Year’s break

Leftists carry their red flags while marching to take part in an anti-Putin rally in central Moscow, to urge Putin to quit power ahead of the March 4 polls in which he is planning to reclaim his old Kremlin job. Tens of thousands took to the streets of Moscow for rival rallies duelling over Russia’s future, in a test of strength for the anti-Vladimir Putin movement one month before presidential polls. AFP

Anti-Putin flame still burns Olga Rotenberg

MOSCOW: The budding movement against Vladimir Putin’s grip on power has kept its momentum a month ahead of Russia’s presidential polls, after its latest rally repeated the success of previous protests despite freezing temperatures, analysts said. Bundled up in down jackets, sheepskin coats and felt boots, protesters turned up Saturday for their third rally since fraud-tainted December elections in defiance of government calls to ignore the protest and after a long New Year’s break. “It is important that the number of people is not going down despite the cold and the fact that this is already their third rally,” said Maria Lipman, editor at Pro et Contra journal published by the Carnegie Moscow Center. “People’s convictions are only growing stronger,” she told AFP. Incensed by widespread claims of fraud in December parliamentary elections, tens of thousands of people gathered in Moscow on December 10 and 24 in the largest protests of Putin’s 12-year rule as president and prime minister. The organisers had worried that the protest movement was in danger of fizzling out and popular anger over claims of fraud may subside two months after the parliamentary polls. But they said the turnout

exceeded expectations, pledging to hold a smaller scale protest before the March 4 presidential election and another mass rally soon after it. “There is absolutely no feeling that the protest movement is fizzling out,” one of the organisers, Sergei Parkhomenko, told AFP. “The Kremlin had hoped it would go away but it’s not going away. It will continue after elections.” While police put the number of protesters at the anti-Putin rally at Bolotnaya Square called through social networks at around 36,000, the organisers said some 120,000 people turned up. Authorities made a series of calls to discourage Russians from joining the opposition protest and staged a rival rally, bussing scores of ordinary Russians to the Poklonnaya Gora War Memorial Park. Police said 138,000 were in attendance but an AFP correspondent at the scene said the numbers appeared to have been exaggerated. Complaints multiplied ahead of the pro-Putin rally, organised by authorities and Kremlin-friendly trade unions, that employees of state companies were offered cash incentives or even ordered to attend the protest. A nurse from a hospital in the Moscow suburb of Zelenograd told AFP this week that colleagues were offered 3,000 rubles ($100) to attend the pro-Putin rally and 15 agreed to go. Analysts said authorities, who

wanted to show that Putin’s backers far outnumbered Putin’s opponents, risked alienating sincere supporters. “This protest will come back to haunt him,” Yuliy Nisnevich, a political science professor at the Higher School of Economics, told AFP. “People were being pressured, humiliated and they will hold a grudge,” he said, adding that many of those who attended the pro-Putin rally might later join the opposite camp. Nikolai Petrov, an analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center, noted that by pulling out all the stops to stage the pro-Putin protest authorities were sending a signal that a rally was a “way to solve political problems.” “Authorities are rocking the boat themselves,” he told AFP. Observers stressed that the nascent protest movement should ramp up its efforts and mobilise greater numbers if it hopes to mount a serious challenge to Putin. “All these rallies, they are not a wave yet but a forerunner,” said Nisnevich. “There’s no energy yet that will wash away this regime.” Grigory Yavlinsky of the liberal Yabloko party, who was disqualified on procedural grounds from standing in the presidential elections, told the protest rally that Putin’s biggest test will come after the ballot. “Life does not end on March 4 or even 5. Everything is just beginning. We will never retreat,” he said to cheers from the crowds.

Probe indicts Nair, 3 scientists CHENNAI: A five-member team that probed a controversial deal between Isro’s commercial arm Antrix Corporation and Devas Multimedia has concluded that former chairman of the space agency, G Madhavan Nair, and three other scientists were responsible for the contract. The other three are A Bhaskaranarayana, former scientific secretary at Isro, KR Sridharamurthi, former executive director of Antrix, and KN Shankara, former director of the Isro satellite centre. The committee, chaired by former Central Vigilance Commissioner Pratyush Sinha, concluded that there have been serious lapses of judgement on the part of various officials, and in some cases the actions verged on the point of breach of public trust. As per the deal, Antrix was to provide 70 MHz S-Band spectrum to Devas, which is into multimedia services. Antrix would provide the spectrum by leasing out transponders of two satellites to be built mainly for Devas. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) estimated the loss to the exchequer to the tune of `2 lakh crore because of the deal. The Centre later scrapped the controversial deal. Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan had recently announced that the reports of two committees that looked into the controversial deal would be made public. And late Saturday, Isro uploaded on its website the conclusions and recommendations of the Sinha Committee, the full High Powered Review Committee Report by BK Chaturvedi and Roddam Narasimha, and a statement on both the committees and the follow up action on their recommendations.

no need to involve the Space Commission in the Devas deal as the decision was taken by Antrix, the Sinha Committee said the commitment was to spend `766 crore for launching and operating the satellites. n The committee also concluded that the terms of the contract was heavily loaded in favour of Devas and asked why the latter with its registered office in Bangalore was considered as an international customer for the purpose of arbitration. n According to the committee, any international agreement signed by a government department with arbitration clause has to be cleared by the legal cell of the department concerned and by the ministry of finance. This was not done in the Antrix-Devas deal.

ISRO’s chairman behind ban: Nair for exclusive use of two custombuilt satellites leaving no scope for alternate use. n The Sinha Committee said the approval process for the deal was riddled with incomplete and inaccurate information given to the Union cabinet and the Space Commission. n The date of agreement signed with Devas on January 28, 2005 was not disclosed to the Space Commission or in the Cabinet note in which sanction for build-

ing GSAT-6, one of the two satellites, was sought. n The Cabinet note gives an erroneous impression that ISRO was in receipt of several expressions of interest for the utilisation of the satellite capacity on commercial terms. n The committee said the existence of an agreement with Devas was not disclosed to the Cabinet when sanction was sought to build the second satellite GSAT-6A. n On the argument that there was

he Central government on January 13 had banned Nair, Bhaskaranarayana, Shankara and Sridharamurthi, from holding any government jobs or any membership in a government committee. Nair, who had been awarded Padma Bhushan in 1998 and Padma Vibhushan in 2009, said Isro's current chairman Radhakrishnan was behind the government's ban order. He said he was not given an opportunity to present his case before the ban order was issued by the government.

Rahul vows not to align with criminals VARANASI: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi said that he was content with his party being out of power in UP but would not join hands with any undesirable elements. "We will not align with criminals at any cost," he said at an election rally in Pindra. "I do not mind even if you give just two or four seats to the Congress in UP, but let me make it very clear that under no circumstances will we make any compromises."

n According to the committee, there was no consultation with any other Central government department including the department of telecommunications on the utility of the technology that would deliver multimedia and information services through satellite and terrestrial systems to mobile receivers, and regulatory requirements for the proposed services before committing to build two satellites for the deal. n The Sinha committee said the INSAT Coordination Committee (ICC) for the overall management of INSAT system and the recommending body for satellite utilisation by non-government users had not met 2004. n Earmarking two satellites for the Antrix-Devas deal without consulting ICC is a clear violation of the government policy. n While the policy is to allow use of satellites by non-government users on non-exclusive basis, the Antrix deal with Devas provides

Russia-China veto on Syria angers world PARIS: Western and Arab powers have reacted angrily to Russia and China’s veto of a Security Council resolution on the Syria crisis, but Moscow and Beijing insisted the text had needed more work. Russia, a long-time Syrian ally, and China had on Saturday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Syrian government’s deadly crackdown despite reports by Syrian activists that troops overnight had killed 230 civilians in the city of Homs. Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin justified the veto by saying the proposed resolution “sent an unbalanced signal to the Syrian parties”. VEGAS: Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney romped to victory in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, US media predicted, cementing him as frontrunner to take on President Barack Obama in November. And former House speaker Newt Gingrich was only a few points ahead of libertarian congressman Ron Paul in a battle for second place. Official figures by the Nevada Republican Party, with 12.5 per cent of votes counted, gave Romney 40.8 per cent, against 26.2 per cent for Gingrich, 19.2 per cent for Paul and 13.6 per cent for Santorum.

GLOBE AT A GLANCE Britain to send n-sub on Falklands patrol LONDON: Britain will send a nuclear submarine to the South Atlantic to protect the Falkland Islands from the threat of Argentine military action. Prime Minister David Cameron has approved plans for one of the Navy’s most sophisticated Trafalgarclass submarines to sail to the region. The heavily-armed vessel is set to be in the islands’ waters by April - the 30th anniversary of the start of the 1982 war.

Israel ‘plans attack on Tehran within months’ LONDON: Israel is planning to attack Iran ‘within months’. Fears of a global nuclear war breaking out were stoked after Israel said Iran has been developing missiles with a range of 6,200 miles, enough to reach the US. An international political storm is now in full force as the US desperately tries to talk Israel out of an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon expressed deep regret, saying that it undermined the role of the United Nations, according to a statement. French President Nicolas

Sarkozy said the veto would encourage further crackdowns by the Syrian regime. “The Syrian tragedy must stop,” said Sarkozy in a statement issued through his office.

Romney wins big in Nevada, Gingrich struggles LAS

Gingrich, who scored an upset win by taking South Carolina last month, is struggling to stay in the race in face of Romney’s superior funds and well-oiled campaign machine. He was due to address the media later Saturday, but his daughters insisted he plans to stay in the race, with all eyes already on March 6, Super Tuesday, when at least 10 states will vote for their Republican nominee in the November elections. “He’s in it to win it. We’re working towards a victory or towards being in Tampa in August. So this is a long and

fluid race. But... we are here for the long haul,” his daughter Kathy Lubbers said, referring to the party convention in August which will crown the nominee. But David Damore, assis-

tant professor of politics at the University of Nevada, said it was a blow to Gingrich. “I think that super Tuesday is his last stand. The party is still fractured... It does look like Paul is costing Gingrich a bit and that will probably be the case in the caucus states,” he said. If Paul creeps into second place in Nevada it will be the best showing yet for the politician who has long set his sights on the White House, but has found it hard to sell his unconventional message and radical economic views, including his opposition to the Federal Reserve.

For French minsiter civilisations ‘not equal’ PARIS: French Interior Minister Claude Gueant, who also holds the immigration portfolio, caused political uproar on Saturday by claiming that not all civilisations are equal, with some more advanced than others. “Contrary to what the left’s relativist ideology says, for us all civilisations are not of equal value,” Gueant told a conference that was closed to the media. “Those which defend humanity seem to us to be more advanced than those that

do not,” he argued in his speech at a meeting organised by a right-wing students group. “Those which defend liberty, equality and fraternity, seem to us superior to those which accept tyranny, the subservience of women, social and ethnic hatred,” he went on. He stressed the need to “protect our civilisation.” The interior minister’s comments provoked a torrent of criticism from the opposition and on the Internet, less than three months a head of a French presidential election.

Rising Oz floodwaters spark mass evacuation SYDNEY: Mass evacuations were under way in northern Australia on Sunday as record flooding that has cut off thousands of people threatened to engulf areas devastated by wild weather last year. Authorities urged residents of St George, a town of 3,800 people in the state of Queensland, to leave their homes as rising floodwaters threatened to isolate the area.

Editorials RUSSIA AND CHINA’S dangerous game

I

t was bound to happen, but somewhere deep down, both the US and the UK held on to the hope that Russia and China would not veto the Syria resolution at the UN. But they did anyway. The Russians and Chinese have long been backers of despotic nations across the world. Assad is doing nothing that the Big 2 have either done themselves or contemplated doing at some point. For Russia and China there is more at stake than Syria’s Opposition, who are being massacred while the UN Security Council fiddles. There are billions of dollars worth of infrastructure and oil deals that are up for grabs, and the Russians and Chinese want to make sure that they have the inside tracks when the dust settles. But their eggs are in a rather rickety basket. If Syria does implode and Assad shunted out then they stand to lose, and hence they are now doing everything to make sure he remains in power... his people be damned.

WHY WE LOVE Rugby

W

e know some forms of cricket can be like watching paint dry, so when we want swift action we choose football. But as the Six Nations Rugby begins, it’s time to pay homage to what is arguably one of the most thrilling sports in the world. From its sheer physicality, to the bursts of sublime pace it can throw up, rugby is a sport that not keeps you at the edge of your seat, and proves that when there’s fun, there will be blood.

Are you a worrywart? Then read this... Soul Curry Sumaa Tekur

D

espite what people say about worry being an unnecessary emotion, I’ve always believed it to be a good motivator. When you worry, you anticipate danger and prepare for it. In your head, you rehearse your reaction to a difficult situation. You learn to identify trouble before it snowballs into a crisis. But an email forward I received a few days back made me realign my understanding of worry. I still think it’s important. But I’m beginning to understand that too much worry can also cripple clarity of thought and de-motivate, not inspire. To use a famous quote: Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do, but doesn’t take you anywhere. Here’s the story about worry. One day, a college professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see and asked the students: “How much do you think this glass weighs?” A few students lifted their hands and answered: “1 pound?” “2 pounds?” “3 pounds?” “Actually, I don’t know the exact weight. I’ll have to weigh it to find out,” the professor said. “I’m not concerned so much with the weight of the glass. My more important question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?” The students looked at each other and said: “Nothing.” The professor continued: “OK, what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?” “Your arm would begin to ache,” one of the students said. “You're right. Now what would happen if I held it for a day?” the professor asked. “Your arm could go numb. You might have severe muscle stress and paralysis; you might have to go to hospital,” ventured another student. “Yes. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?” asked the professor. “No,” replied the students. “Then what caused the

An Underplayed Treasure was a really good story. I agree with the writer's opinion completely. There are so many places in Hyderabad that have not been getting the much needed attention when compared to other tourist attractions. Hyderabad as a city is rich with culture and is filled with traditions, but that is not all. It is also a city of hidden treasures and legends, stories that fill in your time slot for an evening chai. As citizens of the country and the state, we should in some way try and promote these places through communicating media like newspapers and TV channels. Vijaylakshmi Pandit Ameerpet

Your story about taxi drivers stealing from their customers was an eye-opener. I used to avail the services of Meru Cabs but now every time I call them, no matter what time it may be, I get the same answer that there are no cabs available from that area at the time I have asked for. When another friend called, there was a cab available. arm ache; the muscle stress? To have avoided that, what should I have done?” the professor asked. The students were puzzled. “Put the glass down,” said one of the students. “Exactly!” said the professor. After a brief pause, the professor continued. “Life’s problems are something like this. Hold them for a few minutes in your head; they seem manageable. Think of them for a long time; they begin to ache. Hold them even longer; they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.” It is important to think of the challenges in your life. But it’s even more important to “put

them down” at the end of every day before you go to sleep. That is the only way to deal with stress and wake up to a fresh day each morning; and to new challenges. The worst that happens to worrywarts is that they stop living in the present moment. They are always thinking: “What if?” And to this, there are never any clear answers. Excessive worrying creates clouds of confusion and makes the anxious even more so. A good way to stop being a worrywart may be to start putting the glass down every night before going to sleep.

Valentine’s Day

Women unpredictable

As a reader, I look forward to your stories regarding Valentine's day, I just sort of wish that there was more space to write. Because the stories are too small. I liked the story for Valentine's Day ideas. Those were some really good ideas and I am planning to try some of them out this V-day and I am quite excited about that. If you could give us more information, it would be nice. Also, if you could list out some of the restaurants or hotels that are either hosting lunches or have special offers for the day, it would become easier for us to go to these places. Riddhi Joshi Begumpet

I especially like reading your columns - All About Eve. TThe other day, the story was about how women are not each other's best friends. I think it is completely true. I have had friends whom I have known for eight years and then suddenly one fine day, they don't respect my beliefs and they walked out whereas on the other hand, my husband and his friends have been through thick and thin. I appreciate that. But I still have girl friends who I can turn to when I am in need and when I need someone to talk to. Mehak Sanghi Banjara Hills

Self-start like Maruti Sunday Soup A Saye Sekhar

abour unrest is not uncommon in any industry. But surely use of force never pays off. This has been amply proven time and again. The creaking machinery of yesteryear industries have remained a mute spectator to many such scenes for a long time now. But not after sophistication replaced the muscle power at the machines. Now it is deal or no deal. For instance, Suzuki Corporation, makers of Maruti cars, adroitly handled the resentment and strike at its Manesar plant in Haryana, while the management of Regency Ceramics Ltd apparently messed it up for itself in Yanam. The issue also attained political overtones for ostensible reasons — Chandrababu Naidu demanded a probe into the role of Amalapuram MP GV Harsha Kumar (Congress), while YS Jagan swore his support to the workers. The Regency management had to pronounce a lockout as it did not explore negotiations as an option after things reached a tip-

ping point. Nobody would excuse the killing of a top honcho by irate workers. Any amount of remorse among the employees who struck work cannot absolve them of the loss caused to the management. But at the same time, the killing of KC Chandrasekhar, president of operations of the company, has to be seen as a sequel to the ‘custodial death’ of labour

leader Murali Mohan. Of course, this boorish exchange of barbaric actions cannot stand any legal or human scrutiny whatsoever. The professional dexterity demonstrated by the Maruti management, even at the cost of losing out heavily on the sale and dwindling production, is worth recalling and needs a word of praise.

Just to recall, the company asked its workers to sign a ‘good conduct bond’ which angered them. The company put across that ‘some had engaged in sabotage’ and hence the requirement to sign the bond. At the end of the whole episode, the management’s word prevailed. It had entered into a ‘settlement’ with the workers and

made them fall in line and also sign the ‘good conduct bond’. The company also refused to pay salaries for the strike period and never revoked the disciplinary action initiated against 44 of its employees. It was only after a while that people realised that the leaders of the agitation pressed the eject button and managed to coolly walk away with some ‘goodies’ as part of the so-called ‘settlement’. Coercing them into working or a lathi-charge and firing would have scarred the reputation of Maruti. But even at the cost of losing business, the largest carmaker in India proved that it was politically correct. The loss of output ran into hundreds of millions of dollars would not have a bearing on the company, for it is already returning to the pink of its financial health. One more instance of use of force leading to loss of face is the cancellation of environmental clearance to the mega thermal power plant of Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd in Srikakulam district which turned out to be a non-starter. The police lathi-charge and firing would always be seen as a voodoo used by the State or its ‘brothers in arms’ against the “minions or lesser souls”. But the surly approach ends up in blood and gore and results in nothing.

he legendary CK Prahlad would have exulted when an embattled corporate learnt a lesson or two from his work ‘The fortune at the bottom of the pyramid’ to reignite profits. He strongly believed in every letter he authored in his work. His belief in the theory of bottom of the pyramid (BoP) manifested in the form of profits when the City’s IT bellwether announced that 29 per cent of its workforce formed part of the bottom of the pyramid. Yes, it was the ELTPs (entry-level trainee programmers) who contributed largely to the growth

of Mahindra Satyam, the rebranded entity of Satyam Computer Services Ltd. “The hiring in the 0-3 year (experience) category has helped us improve the margins. Currently, we have about 29 per cent of the employee base in that category. We still have some headroom for hiring in that category and that would have a positive impact on the margins,” said Vasant Krishnan, CFO at a recent press conference. “In Q3 of FY11, our EBIDTA margin was 6.2 per cent and we have now expanded to 16.2 per cent. In Q3 FY11, our sub-contract cost to revenue was 72 per cent. We have now managed to contain that to 67 per cent. One of the big levers that we are continuously pushing is to see how we can strengthen and widen that talent pyramid. This is what we are continuously looking at. Even in the administrative expenses, we have seen that steadily coming down. I think we are on the right track,” he said. Presently, the company has a headcount of about 32,280 and the attrition is stable at 16 per cent in the Q3 compared to 25 per cent in the year-ago period. The revenues, EBIDTA and net profit – all have surged. The profit after tax is Rs 308 crore, meaning that the company’s finances are back in black.

L

ast week, I raised a question on YS Jagan’s audacity in assuring the textile merchants that the scrapping of valueadded tax on cloth would be the ‘first file’ he would sign after assuming the office of the Chief Minister. It sounded facetious, for there are no elections round the corner nor has his party grown beyond a puny size. In about just three days, he went on to express solidarity with striking junior doctors. There again, he came up with another droll. He doled out an assurance saying that hiking of stipend of junior doctors would be the ‘first file’ he would append his signature on ‘soon after becoming the Chief Minister’. While he is assuring anybody and everybody that theirs would be the first file, I am eagerly awaiting Jagan’s reaction for another agitation, perhaps by teachers or engineers or anganwadi workers or all of them. He would have to be blessed with numerous hands like the gods in mythology for appending signatures left, right and centre on the numerous ‘first files’. Or, would he file the number of files to prune them? All this becomes a reality only if he can emulate the fabled Sinbad. For, the octopussian CBI is coming close to lay its tentacles on him and his empire. If he can escape the

CBI clutches, then there is election to be fought with two proverbial Goliaths. And, if he emerges victorious there, can he sign all the files he wants to.

RAMA KRISHNA

THIS ONE FIGHTS FOR YOU PK Surendran pksurendran@gmail.com

H

arshita (3) rode her father’s shoulder twice to join the support rally for Anna Hazare. On seeing her excitement on the first day, someone placed on her tiny head a white Gandhi cap, which she now keeps as her life’s first trophy for fighting a social cause. She clips out Anna’s news and photos. “I love Anna,” she says. Does she know what Anna is fighting for? “Yes, against something bad.” Little does she understand that her father himself is an emerging Anna of Hyderabad. Y Panasa Rama Krishna (29) has been, for the past three years, fighting a multi-pronged battle for the public good using the Right to Information (RTI) weapon, and has to his credit, many victories of which provid-

ing his village school three extra classrooms is one very dear to him. This angry young man, who once chased a tipsy truck driver on his bike with his wife and kid riding pillion, is only being restrained by his wife. She’s worried for his safety. “You are fighting big whales, go cool and don’t be angry,” she tells him. But Rama Krishna wonders how could one keep one’s poise in a setup where the rule of law is being mercilessly kicked around? Rama Krishna, co founder of It’s Time to Make a Difference (ITMD), a city youth forum, spends all his spare time (he is a module leader with Infosys) for educating people on the use of RTI, which he says is the most glorious legislation in recent years. While many techies of his age are making money in their spare time, he devotes all his private time to others. He has been receiving warning calls

from affected parties but he hardly gives a thought to them. “You can die even on the bed; why bother then?” he asks philosophically. He talks to Postnoon of his experiences on finding shocking things about the City and beyond. How did you get involved with RTI? When I was in London a few years ago, I saw how cautious and courteous people are. There, no traffic police stops you to collect money. I asked myself why in our City everything is topsyturvy. Then I had a bitter experience regarding a passport for my daughter. I filed the first RTI for that and I realised if you insist on your rights you can get results without bribery. What was the beginning of ITMD? Some of my young friends and I used to meet and discuss

about doing some public good. ITMD was born of that intention in 2008. We have 40 members, all working, but spare their private time and money for public good. We began with helping traffic police but diverted to many other activities and RTI was the only legitimate weapon to fight corruption. How many RTIs have you and ITMD filed so far? Around 500, of which 150 are filed personally by me. What are the shocking revelations and what achievements? RTI is no solution to official corruption but it has a restraint value. We have been partly successful in containing the land mafia gobbling up much of the lakes in City. We have also exposed the GHMC corruption in bus shelter advertisements. There are 500 bus shelters given to advertisement agencies who

RTI — Right to Information Act

T

he Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI) is an Act of the Parliament of India ‘to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens’. The Act applies to all states and union territories of India except the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Under the provisions of the Act, any citizen may request information from a ‘public authority’ (a body of government or ‘instrumentality of state’), which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days. The Act also requires every public authority to computerise their records for wide dissemination and to pro-actively publish certain categories of information. are to build the shelter and advertise but most of them erected the overhead shelter and advertised but made no usable bus stop. Similarly we found out there are 621 places of worship blocking traffic. Who’s responsible for the growing corruption? The educated middle class. They have money and don’t want the trouble and so they pay up. A young techie came to me saying he paid `10,000 to an agent to get his passport but he did not get it. I filed an RTI and got his passport. All it cost was `10! What are the activities of ITMD? We do a lot. We reach out to schools and rural population. We hold meetings and workshops explaining how to have your needs met without paying bribe. We have also launched an IMB website that gives easy steps of getting things done like getting a gas connection, getting a passport or complaining about civic services. What are your dreams? If I have an alternative income I want to devote it full time to social service, especially making the RTI popular. RTI has to be woven into our ethos because officials will know that they are accountable. Once it becomes a part of governance a lot of corrupt practices can be restrained. I want to make a panIndian RTI network to help those unaware of its usage. You can also log on to www.itmd-india.org, which gives downloadable steps for RTI.

This is a place where I was born, and there is no question Andhra will be my preferred place.” Srinivas also feels that early introduction to music, and making music a subject to be taught in school just like any other subject would proliferate the great art of classical music. On fond memories of Remember Shakti, Srinivas tells us, “When we were performing in Los Angeles, L Shankar, one of the early members of Shakti came to watch us perform. I was awestruck seeing him as he is one of the best violinist, singer and composers in the world. “ Srinivas recalls an incident that he believes is proof that classical music is getting more popular than ever before. “I was once in Gudiwada for a performance, and I saw only 12–15 people in the audience and I was wondering if this is the kind of reception for classical music today. As the concert progressed, the crowd swelled to 4,000, struggling to find space to watch the performance — this is the beauty of Indian classical music.” The Chowmahalla palace will be the venue of the great maestros’ musical magic as they perform on February 10, from 8pm onwards. group of young German painters assembled in 1809 who sought to return the medieval spirit to art. It was a reaction against 18th century Neoclassicism and was the first anti-academic movement in the European art scene. The movement came to be known as Nazarene and the group — Brotherhood of St Luke or more popularly known as Lukasbund. Working in the confines of their fraternity meant that their daily life was based on ascetic poverty and worship. Their paintings reflected these ideals, and so followed ideals of simplicity, sincerity and sobriety. Needless to say they believed that all art should serve a moral or religious purpose. The Nazarenes also believed that art was a divine mission, which could elevate them to the level of true faith. The Brotherhood's original members were six Vienne Academy students including Fredrich Overbeck, Franz Pforr, Ludwig Vogel and Johann Konrad Hottinger, Peter Von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Schda While the achievements of Nazarenes are hard to measure, the meaning and purpose behind their work was widely appreciated in their time. However, they were also criticised in modern times for being ‘unimpressive, characterised by overcrowded compositions, over attention to detail, and lack of colouristic or formal vitality’. Nevertheless, their work went on to exert considerable influence in Germany and then across England during the pre-Raphaelite Movement.

While the City has a host of choices, the bean bag shop at the Gachibowli crossroads seem to have a great variety in sizes and even colours. Right from pastel green to red to popular dark brown and blacks, you will love this shop. And guess what? It is priced between `600– 1,500 only.

P

icking art work can sometimes be a tricky choice. It depends a lot on what kind of set up you have. First get your priorities and requirements in order. Do you prefer expensive art or would you be happier displaying your creativity or would you want to elaborately frame your child’s paintings? That’s a lot to choose from. So how to go about it? Socialite Gazala Baig tells us how to decide on the colours of art, “The first thing that you keep in mind is your room’s colour scheme. Because creating a visual link is important and that can be done by either complimenting existing colours or by using contrasting colours,” she continues to say, “Having one

dominating colour can be discomforting or having too many colours can represent a very confused state of mind. Avoid using ambiguous colours like greenish yellow or faded yellow.” Most home decorators also advise against using flashy colours as they can be distracting and look garish, unless of course that is your kind of style. Size and spacing is another major factor that needs to be kept in mind when choosing art for your home, Sanya

Regintala, a Bangalore-based art gallery curator says, “Your blank wall is like an empty canvas whose identity will change with the kind of painting that adorns it. So it is important that you ensure you don’t clutter the place. If there is a bare wall right from the ceiling to the ground, then having one large painting can be a good idea. It is also important that it’s impactful and not just another painting.” She adds, “Another good idea that works well on all kinds of walls is using several small

pieces of art. You could assort them in styles or give the feel that you are an art lover and will allow you to use multiple ways to express your style than with just one painting.” Deciding on frames can be as much as a challenge as deciding on the painting, to which Anna Lyrian, an interior designer and artist, says, “A thick black frame or a darkbrown frame with a piece of art in it will look great in pretty much any kind of setup. If you have large spaces in your house and if you can afford to dedicate a wall to art, then you could use the royal looking gold or metallic-coloured gilded frames. It’s like creating an architectural piece in itself. And to create a thematic feel, you could use similar complimenting frames for other hangings like mirrors, wall clocks, etc.”

Hanging lamp made out of cane

T

his is a great piece to add to your house. It can be hung anywhere without occupying too much space. The round shape will not seem odd and can be pretty much used with any kind of decor. Depending on the quality and colour it can cost you between `300–600. And like we always say, bargain!

ne of the remarkable features of Salz is its space. The restaurant-cum-lounge is spread over two floors; the first floor is an in-house dining area and the other is the terrace, which presents you with a lake view on one side and the KBR park on the other. The restaurant has been tastefully done with each room catering to a different theme, offering eight different seating options. For a more relaxed evening with friends, you could opt for the lounge area on the terrace, which instantly transports you to the lanes of Marrakesh. Cosy family dinners and important corporate lunches can be held on the first floor where a separate dining area has been allotted. When it was time to order, we decided on the small quesadillas, which were filled with green pea hummus, tomato salsa and sour cream, which literally melted in the mouth. Then we gobbled up the pesto-infused green fish and the polenta-crusted chicken as well. The appetisers were so good that we remain undecided about the main course and so the chef suggested the creamy chicken and jalapeno risotto, which was cooked with diced tomatoes and parmesan cheese. We then decided to be gluttons so we gorged on half a roasted chicken, seared with gravy and a side of mashed potatoes. We passed out with a glass of green apple martini and strawberry daiquiri but then in the end the temptation of baked cheese cake and hazelnut chocolate mousse with peanut praline, revived us. The restaurant recently started its brunches, which is priced at `1,200 plus taxes. GIFT ‘EM IN STYLE

Valentine's Day is just a few days away and there is so much excitement in the air. Celebrating any occasion is incomplete without gifts. So this Valentine's, spoil you sweetheart with some thoughtful gifts. Make full use of our tips if you have run out of ideas COMPILED BY FLEME VARKEY fleme.v@postnoon.com FOR HIM

FOR HER

A great watch: He’s been coming late on your dates, has he? His excuse — a worthless watch. Time to take the hint. For this special day, get him a great watch and see him come up with other excuses. Shop at: Tag Heur store, Fast Track, Ethos, Shoppers Stop.

Jewellery: A woman and her jewels can never be parted and she will only love you more if you help add to her collection. Shopping around for the most suitable jewellery is often a minefield if the boy thinks one piece of jewellery looks much like another. So gentlemen, do remember to research. She does not need chunky jewellery or a whole shop, even a little pendant will do. Shop at: Tanishq, Forever.

A pair of cufflinks and ties: Does your man like to be dressed to the T always? If he is a suit and jacket person, then cufflinks is the best gift you can give him. He will be the centre of attention at any meeting or conference he attends wearing them. As for ties, they are an essential to make him look all the more dapper. Shop at: Arrow, Louis Philippe.

Candles: Love is in the air and so should be the scent of aromatherapy candles. Here's a tip: Girls love all things that smell sweet, be it flowers or candles. So if you are in the mood to pop the question on this day, the romantic allure of scented candles will work like a charm. Shop at: Body Shop, Inhabit.

Wallet and shoes: Now you would definitely want to keep this in mind. For it’s where he keeps the big bucks. In case you have a shopping expedition planned in the next few days, this is an ideal gift as whenever he will take out his wallet, he will remember it was gifted by you. Also, you can let his feet do the talking or rather dancing when you gift him that pair of shoes he's been eyeing for some time. Shop at: Cinderella (imported goods store), Versace, Lifestyle, Aldo, Charles and Keith. Fragrance: This one should be a rather simple one with the vast choice in men's cologne in the market. And the best part is that this is one gift that will work for you too, all year long. Here are some suggestions, Hugo Boss, Davidoff, Burberry and Armani. Shop at: Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop.

Fragrance: Like I said earlier, if you want to win this girl over, fragrance will be your best bet. Never choose a fragrance in a hurry, whatever the occasion. Scent definitely makes a girl feel sexy and if she has been with you long, then this is an apt gift but if you have been on only two dates — refrain. She might take offence. Some suggestions: Gardenia by Elizabeth Taylor, Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci Shop at: Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop.

A sexy dress: For a day out, casual wear is great and for the evening, go for cocktail dresses such as a gown. Surprise your girlfriend by getting her a sexy dress and make sure you have her tastes and size in mind. Bold fuchsia, a multi-layered dress in red, a bandage dress in pink could be some of your choices. Shop at: Promod, Chemistry and Mango.

Boxers: Now, we can afford to get a little intimate on V-Day. And if you have a romantic date planned for the evening and some action after, boxers will be the ideal gift for a man. It also shows that you pay attention to your man. Shop at: Blue Mangoes. Bonus tip: If you are feeling generous, then either you can gift him each of these items every day in the Valentine week or could make him a goodie basket. Men love such thoughtfulness. Result: Satisfied boyfriends and husbands.

Lingerie: It is a tricky but rewarding gift — do your research on which pieces will suit your woman. Here's a tweet that might give you some inspiration." Lingerie is another Valentine's Day gift that benefits the gift-giver as much, if not more, than the gift-receiver. It's a win-win situation." Shop at: Shoppers Stop. Bonus tip: Women love to be pampered, so at-home spa gear is a great go-to purchase, or gift her a spa session with her friends; chocolates, flowers, cakes are appreciative add ons. Try and keep the colour code red. Result: Beaming, more-in-love girlfriends and wives.

avi Teja, Taapsee starrer Daruvu is making quite a lot of buzz in the industry. Director Shouryam Shiva is shooting the film at a breakneck speed and recently a folk song was shot with the lead pair. We hear that the film is a socio-fantasy and currently the film is being made in Ramoji Film City, where some key scenes are being shot on Ravi Teja and Prabhu in a Yamalokam set. Prabhu is playing the role of Yamadharma Raja and Kaikala Satyanarayana, who had played Yamadharma Raja’s role in several films, is also part of the cast. In the past, socio-fantasy films like Yamagola, Yamudiki Mogudu and Yamadonga have been quite successful at the box-office. Burugupalli Shiva Ramakrishna is producing the film. Vijay Anthony is composing the music.

Srinu Vaitla demands a bomb for NTR’s film? T

he stupendous success of Dookudu has done a whole lot of good for almost everyone involved with the film. Mahesh Babu is turning into a hit machine and Samantha became one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry. And as per the latest rumour doing rounds in the industry, Srinu Vaitla has hiked his remuneration by a huge margin. A source reveals, “Srinu Vaitla’s brand value has increased a lot ever since the film turned out to be a blockbuster. Since he’s known for balancing action and entertainment in the right proportions, the audience have been appreciating his films for the past several years.” The buzz is that the director has asked for a remuneration to the tune of around `10 crore for his upcoming film starring NTR and Kajal. Although, it’s just a rumour, industry analysts aren’t surprised with the turn of events as they feel that with the star cast and a great team of writers and other technicians, Srinu Vaitla might just have another money spinner in hand. Ganesh Bandla is producing the film and it’ll be launched in mid-March.

ani Ratnam’s upcoming film starring Gautham and Samantha has been officially titled as Kadal (sea). Earlier, the film was tentatively titled as Pookadai. The film has been making waves ever since Mani Ratnam went on a tour across South Tamil Nadu to scout for locations to shoot his film. For the first time since Alaipayuthey (Sakhi in Telugu), which released in 2000, Mani Ratnam is making a romantic drama set in a fishing village. Lakshmi Manchu and Arjun are playing important roles and recently Arvind Swamy, who played lead roles in films like Roja and Bombay, is making a comeback with this film. Music for the film is credited to AR Rahman.

ampath Nandi decided to call off the shooting of his upcoming film Rachcha starring Ram Charan Tej and Tamannaah, after he ran into trouble with a forest official in Kerala. The team was shooting near a lake in Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Kerala. When Ram Charan and Tamannaah had to shoot a few scenes for a song in a boat, the deputy director of the tiger reserve insisted that they wear life jackets. However, Nandi had reportedly refused to

comply with the request as he felt that if the lead pair wore life jackets it would spoil the visual impact. Since both the parties refused to give up, Nandi called off the shoot for the day. The lack of safety measures on a film set has often landed several artists in trouble. In fact, a few years ago, a stuntman lost his life while shooting for a stunt scene in the Godavari river.

haman, who has been riding high on the success wave, is no longer part of the Rebel team. Raghava Lawrence, who’s directing the film and Thaman decided to part ways after trying to work on the tunes for quite sometime. Although, the reasons behind Thaman’s decision to opt out of the project aren’t clear yet, he has clarified that there’s no bad blood between them. In fact, the hotshot music director was quite thankful towards the director for offering him his previous film Kanchana, which was a big hit. What has caught many by surprise is that Lawrence is going to compose the music for this film. In the past, he had composed music for Nagarjuna starrer Don. Ever since Rebel went on floors, it has been mired in problems including Anushka dropping out of the project and production delays. Prabhas, Tamannaah and Deeksha Seth are playing the lead roles in the film.

Shriya: Do not divide films on regional basis D

o not divide the movie industry based on regions, urges multilingual actress Shriya Saran and requests people to refer to filmdom as ‘Indian cinema’. “I feel films can be used as cultural instincts, so let’s call it Indian cinema... Dividing it north, south, east and west will cause nuisance and it will divide the industry. We are one big family and let’s be like that,” Shriya said. The 29-year-old has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam movies and said “I have been part of every industry and I believe that it is nice to know different languages and cultures because it opens up your window to life.” “I understand all the languages — whether it’s Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Hindi. For me, every language is important and they have their own charm. The same holds true for the film industry,” she added. Shriya made her acting debut in 2001 with the Telugu film Ishtam and tasted her first commercial success with the 2002 Telugu hit Santhosham. However, it was the unprecedented box-office success of Rajinikanth starrer Tamil film Shivaji: The Boss that gave her acting career a boost. IANS

Krafting success Jim Slater

INDIANAPOLIS: New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft (right) , who began the NFL season heartbroken at the death of his wife Myra, has coped with help from his team as it tries to win a Super Bowl in her memory. The 70-year-old billionaire, forced into a lead role in bitter contract talks over money while his wife lay dying last July, will cheer on his Patriots as they play the New York Giants in Super Bowl 46 at Indianapolis on Sunday. “It has been a tough year,” Kraft said. “I believe

There's a camaraderie. It is special.” Myra H. Kraft died last July of ovarian cancer at age 68. rushing list with 14,101 yards, was among six players voted into the American Football Hall of Fame on Saturday while some big names were snubbed. Defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, offensive tackle Willie Roaf, defensive end Chris Doleman, center Dermontti Dawson and cornerback Jack Butler, a seniors category nominee, were also selected to the US sport shrine. On the eve of Sunday's Super Bowl 46 championship showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, the Hall of Fame selection committee gathered to pick 2012 inductees from among 17 retired NFL legend finalists. Among those who were denied a place among the all-time gridiron elites were coach Bill Parcells, receivers Cris Carter and Andre Reed, running back Jerome Bettis and defender Charles Haley, the only five-time Super Bowl champion.

down on us over the course of this season,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said. “Hopefully we can go out and get a win for him. It would make this year very special for him and special for his family.” Patriots players have given Kraft a gift his salary money could not buy, their emotional support after the death of his wife of 48 years. “These 53 guys have been my savior,” Kraft said. “They have shown me great love, respect and support. They helped me get through the hardest period of my life. They felt my pain and they have tried to comfort me. “I just think she has been with us and she is smiling with us now.” Kraft, the only NFL owner to build a stadium entirely with private funding, purchased the Patriots in 1994 and the club is a league-best 212-104 in his 18 years in charge. But the success left him unprepared for a fight he could not win. “I never understood what the word heartbroken meant,” Kraft said. “I never understood what it meant to lose someone. She was the greatest person in my life. She was my best pal. I thought she would outlive me for 30 years. “This horrible cancer came and it has wrecked my life. Having this team has been a savior for me.” On top of personal tragedy, Kraft was a key figure in talks to settle the 4 1/2-month NFL shutdown.

Levin extends lead at Phoenix Open SCOTTSDALE: Spencer Levin stretched his lead in the Phoenix Open to six strokes on Saturday, carding a three-under 68 in the third round before the biggest crowd in the tournament's history. A crowd of 173,210 turned out in ideal weather at the par-71 TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, breaking the record of 170,802 who attended the 2008 third round. “It was fun for sure, but I was trying to focus, too,” Levin said of the big galleries and the raucous atmosphere particular to the tournament. “You don't get that too often, all those people cheering.” Levin was five shots ahead after completion of the second round on Saturday morning, after darkness halted play in Friday's fog-delayed round. In the third, he notched four birdies and one bogey for a 17-under total of 196. His bogey on the par-five 15th was his first since the opening hole of the $6.1 million event. “I felt like I played solid,” Levin said. “I felt like I was in control of my ball most of the day. I've never had a big lead like that starting the day, and I thought I played well. Overall, I'm pleased about it.” Fellow American Webb Simpson had six birdies and three bogeys in his 68 for an 11-under total of 206. “I feel good, but my swing is just not really getting in sync,” said Simpson, who at number six in the world is the highest-ranked player in the field. “I'm missing the ball left and right. I want to polish that up. But I made a bunch of good swings down the stretch that gave me a lot of confidence.”

Kirani throws down Olympic gauntlet BOSTON: Grenada's Kirani James signalled his intention to add Oympic gold to the 400m world title he claimed last year with a convincing victory at the Boston Indoor athletics meeting on Saturday. James clocked 45.96sec, fastest in the world so far this year, as he again demonstrated that US dominance of the men's Olympic 400m is under threat. James posted an emphatic victory over American Josh Scott (46.54), Trinidad's Renny Quow (46.70) and the Virgin Islands' Tabarie Henry (46.88). “Considering this was my first

indoor meet of the year, I have to be happy with winning here in pretty good time,” James said. “I feel a lot stronger than in the past. I've put in a lot of work in the weight room, not done all that much on the track. “To open the season running 45.96, I guess that's pretty good,” the 19-year-old said. James, who won the 400m world title last year in Daegu, South Korea, is hoping to continue to build toward London with a strong performance at the World Indoor Championships March 1112 in Istanbul. If he does eventually top the

Olympic podium, he'll reverse a trend of US success in the event. Americans have won seven consecutive Olympic titles in the 400m -- LaShawn Merritt in 2008, Jeremy Wariner in 2004, Michael Johnson in 1996 and 2000, Quincy Watts in 1992, Steve Lewis in 1988 and Alonzo Babers in 1984. American Jenn Suhr rebounded from a disappointing no-height at the US Open at Madison Square Garden last week with a victory in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.88m. That was an American indoor record and put her second on the world all-time indoor list.

Fofana heats up freezing Paris Luke Phillips

PARIS: Wesley Fofana is no spring chicken: 24 years old, an age at which counterparts in the French backline have already accrued more than 20 caps and played in Rugby World Cups. But the Clermont centre, who benefited from some serious game time during this season’s World Cup in which France lost in the final to New Zealand, made himself a straight pick for new coach Philippe Saint-Andre, installed in place of Marc Lievremont. And he did not disappoint on a freezing night at the Stade de France on Saturday, a steady defensive showing with midfield club-mate Aurelien Rougerie in the first half coupled with an ever-threatening display in attack as the game progressed towards a comprehensive 30-12 home win over Italy. He was on hand in the 72nd minute to bundle his way over for a deserved try, after his fast footwork, rugby league-like spinning away from the tackle and offloading potential had helped rouse a moribund public that had seen the Italians dominate possession for

France’s Wesley Fofana (C) runs with the ball during the Six Nations rugby match France vs Italy on Saturday at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis outside Paris. AFP large periods of the game. “There was a lot of emotion because my family, my relatives and my friends were in the stadium,” Fofana said of the moment when he handed off an Italian defender to cross for his fivepointer. “After the try, I had to re-focus

immediately on the match. “I tried to not change my habits, to forget the 80,000 spectators. I think I managed to do it rather well,” said Fofana, who has conceded that a promising junior footballing career during which he played alongside the likes of Paris Saint-Germain winger Jeremy

Menez had left him in two minds whether to pursue a professional rugby union career. “We had quarter of an hour in the first half when we did nothing but defend. Our realism hurt them. That was the difference.” France captain Thierry Dusautoir, who produced yet

another startling display of his appetite for destructive defence, hailed the newcomers to the team, saying they had a large part in deciding France’s rugby future. “It’s a new adventure that’s kicking off,” the Ivory Coast-born flanker said. “We know very well that the players who played are opening up the way for a new-look squad. “We saw that the young players enjoyed good games, especially Wesley with the great try he scored. “We’re there to pen this adventure and we’re focused short term on the Six Nations.” Fofana crossed for his first international try after veteran winger Vincent Clerc had also touched down. The Toulouse player barely touched the ball all night but scored a try after a Francois TrinhDuc chip and chase, aided by Aurelien Rougerie’s knee, that saw him equal the newly-installed coach as the second highest try scorer for France. Clerc’s try was his 32nd in 58 international appearances, drawing him level with exwinger Philippe Saint-Andre, still four short of legendary fullback Serge Blanco, who notched up 38 tries in 93 Tests between 1980-91.

New-look England too strong for Scots Julian Guyer

EDINBURGH: England’s rebuilt side were left looking forward to the rest of the Six Nations Championship with confidence after starting the defence of their title with a 13-6 win away to Scotland. For the former Scotland youth international in charge of England it was a dream start to life as a senior international coach; for the former England flanker in charge of Scotland it was an all too depressingly familiar tale. England’s success, with Charlie Hodgson’s try after

he charged down a kick from rival fly-half Dan Parks 27 seconds into the second half proving decisive, was all the more creditable given they had seven players making their Test debuts — three in the starting lineup and four coming off the bench. They also had to absorb plenty of Scotland pressure, especially towards the finish, with England making 142 tackles to the hosts’ 62. Acting head coach Stuart Lancaster, appointed after Martin Johnson resigned follow-

ing England’s World Cup debacle, was delighted by the spirit his team showed in ending a run of eight years without a victory at Murrayfield. “This is a very difficult place to come and win. It has been a great result for us,” Lancaster said after the win on Saturday that set England up for another away match, against Italy in Rome, next weekend. “We didn’t get everything right but we got a lot of things right,” said former England reserve chief Lancaster, who speaks with an undeniably English accent but who qualified for Scotland through his mother. England captain Chris

Robshaw, one of two new skippers on show along with Scotland hooker Ross Ford, lauded the visitors’ defence in a match where 20-year-old centre Owen Farrell kicked eight points on his Test debut. “Whenever you play away from home you don’t have as much ball as you would like but everyone defended for their lives.” Scotland, for whom Parks kicked two penalties, did come close to a 63rd minute try only for the replay official to rule England scrum-half Ben Youngs had beaten Greg Laidlaw to the touchdown after the Scotland replacement back’s chip over the defence.

Henry’s ‘special’ moment thrills Mike McGrath

LONDON: Arsene Wenger believes Thierry Henry’s stoppage-time goal in the win over Blackburn will be remembered as a “special” moment if it turns out to be his last strike at the Emirates Stadium. Henry, who returned to Arsenal on loan, is scheduled to head back to New York after away matches against Sunderland and AC Milan, so wrapping up the scoring against Rovers could have come in the last minute of his final home game. Robin van Persie had scored a hat-trick, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted twice and Mikel Arteta also found the back of the net before Henry struck to complete a 7-1 win, their biggest Premier League win at the Emirates. “With Thierry going back to the States he played, normally, his last game at the Emirates and in the last minute he scored his goal. That is really something special,” Wenger said. “It has been very positive, everyone listens to his advice as he’s delivered here and they all

want to deliver. He’s respected. “He is still not away yet, normally until after the Milan game. Sunderland and Milan are two massive games.” Wenger insisted he has not looked at extending Henry’s loan yet for him to be involved in the clash against Tottenham. His return to the club has coincided with emergence of Oxlade-Chamberlain and has also seen Theo Walcott return to his best form. Wenger suggested both may be included in the England squad to face Holland at the end of the month, although he has not spoken to Fabio Capello. “Would you be surprised?” he replied, when asked about the possibility of the pair being included. “Alex was not ready earlier in the season but he has made a big step in the last months, he produces team play and is not only going forward but contributes to the build up and defending. “He has improved very quickly and he is a fighter as well in his personality. He plays like a guy who had talent in September but is much more mature now.”

King Kenny backs Suarez to fire on return Graham Chase

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish expects controversial striker Luis Suarez to hit the ground running when he returns from suspension against Tottenham on Monday. The Uruguayan, 25, has missed the last eight matches through suspension after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s French defender Patrice Evra in the 1-1 draw at Anfield in October. Suarez had been Liverpool’s main attacking threat since arriving in a £22.8 million deal from Ajax in January last year. In his absence, the Reds have won through to the League Cup final at Wembley, where they will face Cardiff later this month, and the FA Cup fifth round. But their problems in the Premier League have continued, with just one win in the four

matches that Suarez has missed. His return is sure to be a major boost for the Reds and Dalglish claims the striker has been looking sharp in training. “Luis is smashing. He’s good, he’s in and around the place and he’s quite happy,” Dalglish said.

“We’ll have a look and see how he is in training before we pick a team for Monday. “We’ll take everything into mind — we’ll have a look at Luis, we’ll have a look at the other boys who have played and we’ll have a look at the opposition and then

we’ll make our decision. “It’s great to have him back and available for selection. He’s a fantastic player, but then there are a lot of fantastic players in the squad. “The stronger your squad is, the better chance you have of competing — and he certainly makes the squad stronger as an awful lot of them do.” Dalglish could also recall captain Steven Gerrard, who was rested for the 3-0 victory at Wolves in midweek. He may well need Gerrard as Tottenham continue to push Manchester City and Manchester United hard at the top of the Premier League table. And Dalglish claims he would not be surprised if Spurs lasted the distance. He added: “Spurs were a wee bit unfortunate at the beginning of the season but since then they’ve kicked on and have been as good as anyone in the league.”

AVB slams Terry ‘racism’ fallout LONDON: Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas late on Saturday blasted the fallout from skipper John Terry’s pending racism case as an undignified spectacle. “It is an unfortunate event and an event which doesn’t dignify British football,” Villa-Boas said. “We have to let the persons be called to court and the court make the necessary decision,” added Villas-Boas, who praised Terry’s “amazing” performances while the whole affair has dragged on since he was accused of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match last year. Terry was stripped of the England captaincy for the second time in two years on Friday amid concern the case and the media fallout had made his position untenable. In some quarters of the media there have been calls for the veteran defender to be left out of the Euro 2012 party altogether while he concentrates on trying to clear his name. The English Football Association confirmed in a statement Friday that chairman David Bernstein had contacted Terry to inform him of the body’s decision to remove him as captain until the racism allegations were “resolved.” Terry, 31, denies the charges and has vowed to clear his name. However the decision to delay his court case until July 9 left FA chiefs with the prospect of the saga overshadowing England’s Euro 2012 campaign.

Drogba brace secures SF spot for Ivorians Keyvan Naraghi

MALABO: Didier Drogba had a penalty saved before scoring in each half as Ivory Coast triumphed 3-0 against Equatorial Guinea on Saturday in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal. The 33-year-old Chelsea striker struck with his right foot on 36 minutes and his head on 69 as the Elephants made it four wins in four matches and set up a semi-final date against Gabon or Mali in Libreville next Wednesday. Yaya Toure completed the scoring nine minutes from full-time with a superb goal off a free kick, curling the ball over the wall and goalkeeper Danilo to send home supporters streaming to the exits. It was a predictable outcome to a match that never scaled dizzy heights with the Ivorians fielding stars from some of the top leagues in Europe while the Equatoguineans relied heavily on Spanish lowerleague footballers. Drogba said he had had to pull himself together after his missed spotkick. “My teammates encouraged me and supported me a lot. I had to get back into the game and I owed them these goals. I am happy to have produced the goods for them and I am proud of my colleagues.” Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui said: “We suffered more than we might have expected. We knew we had to win the midfield battle. We knew we had the players up front who could make the difference. “Another team would have lost because I saw a very good Equatorial Guinesa side out there.

Happily for us, Didier made the difference and we came through.” The hosts’ coach Gilson Paulo said his charges had fought gamely. “I am pleased with my team’s work. We lost because we came up against a very strong team.

Now we have to look to the future.” Ivory Coast made six changes from the vitual ‘B’ team that outplayed Angola to top Group B, but there were no starting places for English Premier League duo Salomon Kalou or Cheik Tiote. Equatorial Guinea recalled Laurence Doe and Iban ‘Randy’ Iyanga after they completed one-match bans plus David Alvarez, and preferred Cameroonborn Narcisse Ekanga to compatriot Thierry Fidjeu up front. Although 133 places separated them on the FIFA world rankings, the home team held their own early on, getting plenty of players behind the ball each time the Ivorians threatened. But the ball was almost exclusively in the Equatoguinean half with Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry a mere onlooker and the visitors had a good chance to take the lead just before the halfhour mark. Ben Konate fouled Didier Zokora just inside the penalty area only for Drogba to have his hard, well-placed spot kick superbly pushed away at the expense of a corner by Brazil-born Danilo. The captain atoned soon after with a clinical finish although the goal came gift-wrapped from centre-back Fernando Rui, who had plenty of time to clear a long pass but let it slip past him. Drogba darted forward, turned inside Rui and fellow central defender Doe and unleashed a low shot that beat Danilo and flew just inside the near post to give the Elphants a deserved 1-0 half-time advantage. Equatorial Guinea won more possession in the early second-half exchanges before Gervinho squandered a great chance to double the Ivorian lead.

Barça win keeps pressure on Real Dermot Ledwith

Barcelona MADRID: beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the Nou Camp on Saturday to keep alive their title hopes and remain seven points behind leaders Madrid, who earlier had beaten Getafe 1-0 thanks to a Sergio Ramos goal. Barca coach Pep Guardiola put his trust in youth and was repaid when twenty year-old Cristian Tello opened the scoring in his first full game for the club. Lionel Messi extended Barca’s lead on 72 minutes a minute before Carlos Vela pulled one back for Sociedad.

The game kicked off in freezing temperatures and burst into life on four minutes when first Messi was denied by Sociedad keeper Claudio Bravo, before Victor Valdes blocked from Diego Ifran at the other end. Four minutes later and Barca were ahead when Tello beat the advancing Bravo to convert a slide rule pass from Messi. Earlier Real Madrid overcame windy conditions to win 1-0 at Getafe when Ramos outjumped Getafe defender Juan Valera to head home a Mesut Ozil corner for the only goal of the game on 18 minutes. Without ever getting

into top gear ‘los blancos’ did enough to deserve the points at the scene of Barcelona’s only defeat this season, but they had to survive a clear shout for a penalty by the home team in the second period. Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, repeatedly linked to a return to the Premier League in the last week, again refused to speak to the press afterwards and left his assistant Aitor Karanka to sum up the game. “Sergio [Ramos] is a player with a lot of personality and he showed it tonight, it was not easy but we controlled the game throughout,” he said.
