ven as Edwin Emmanuel walks into the room, he carries tell-tale signs of an artist. There are remains of paint on his hands and from his back-pack come the familiar sounds of spray cans. He is just returning after holding a graffiti workshop for children. “I want them to grow up knowing graffiti as a form of art and not a form of vandalism,” he says earnestly. Edwin hails from a long-line of artists, architects, photographers — essentially, a family of creative people. So it was natural that when he first saw graffiti art in Bangalore, he was drawn to it. “Till then I used to sketch a lot on paper, but when I saw street art, I was immediately drawn to it. It's full of colour. There are no constraints like is the case with traditional art. Graffiti is unconventional and allows you to express yourself unconditionally,”

Colleges may shut down from Feb 7 EDUCATION Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com

T

he State government has reportedly agreed to release `1,200 crore by Monday evening. This decision came in response to the threat of an indefinite shutdown of all professional colleges as declared by the Consortium of Engineering and Professional Colleges Management Association of Andhra Pradesh (CEPCMAAP), from February 7. “We will no longer be convinced with just words. We want to see action now. If the government releases `1,200 crore by this afternoon, as well as give a GO to release the remaining `2,060 crores towards the fee-reimbursement scheme funds to the welfare departments by the end of the month, then we will call off the strike. Else, we will continue,” said Jayram Reddy, president, AP Private Pharmacy Colleges Management Association.

The consortium is again meeting on Monday to discuss their grievances. Students of the professional colleges are soon going to be left in the lurch, if the managements shut down the colleges. The government, as per its policy, has to reimburse the fee concession offered to different sections of students a sum of `3,000 crore studying in engineering, pharmaceutical, MBA and MCA colleges in the state. This prompted the professional college management boards, which claim it will be difficult to function owing to the acute shortage of money, to call for a strike. The association claims that not a single rupee has been given to them and subsequently, more than 800 colleges in the State have not been able to pay salaries to their faculty for the last three months. “We have pleaded with the government to release funds. Colleges are finding it increasingly hard to sustain due to a financial crunch. We have approached the Supreme Court several times which ordered the government to

PIC FOR REPRESENTATIONAL PURPOSE

release the funds immediately. Yet, none of the professional colleges have received any amount this year. Unless we take such a step, the government officials will not bow down,” said N Ramesh Babu, chairman, CEPCMAAP. As many 720 engineering, 305 pharmaceutical, 650 B.Ed, 700 MBA and MCA colleges are going to remain shut unless the govern-

ment sanctions the funds, said K Ramadas, general secretary of AP Private Pharmacy Colleges (APPPC). “Lecturers are boycotting classes and there is nothing that we can do as we don’t have the funds to pay,” he said. T Jaypal Reddy, president, APPPC, said that the reason why colleges in the State have poor infrastructure is because they

don’t have the resources to improve it. “Since its inception in 2009, the government hasn’t even paid us the entire amount. Some colleges are still awaiting pay for the year 2009-2010 and 20102011. This amount, too, is estimated to be `300 crores. We can’t sustain ourselves any longer,” he said. The fee reimbursement scheme, started by the late chief minister YS Rajshekhar Reddy in 2009, aimed to reimburse the annual tuition fee of students from economically backward classes, including SC, ST, OBC and EBC. On the other hand, the decision of stalling colleges post February 7, will affect thousands of students in the state. “We know the implications that this will have on the students. The timetable will go haywire. But we are helpless ourselves. Last month, we gave a warning to the government, but they did not listen. We will await a response from the government on Monday. If it is positive, then we will call it off. Else, we will go ahead with the strike,” warned Jaypal.

A blood donation camp was organised on Monday as part of the protest. Patients will have to wait a little longer for junior doctors to start treatment, as neither the junior doctors nor the government is willing to come to a mutual understanding.

security advice to remove lollipops (A d displaying boards on road dividers) by the City police department has put Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials on a high alert. But at the same time, it is also resulting in loss of revenue for the corporation which is scouting for income generating sources. Officials are busy these days removing lollipops installed on dividers of arterial roads of the City. Some of these stretches include Banjara Hills Road No.1 and 2, famous Necklace road near IMAX theatre. The most important reason for the removal of these lollipops is a security advice from the police department, as they can be used to plant bombs by antisocial elements. The contention

of police is that Hyderabad which witnesses a lot of VIP movement is prone to such attacks. Immediately after receiving the advisory from the cops, the GHMC officials have decided to remove lollipops from all the important stretches of the City once their contract expires. The officials have already removed these boards from Banjara Hills Road No.1. "We have initiated the process of removing lollipops as per the police advice. All these lollypops are leased out. So, we are removing them as their contract expires," GHMC assistant engineer (advertisements) K Narsing Rao told Postnoon on Friday. Removal of these lollipops is also directly leading to the loss of revenue to the GHMC, while its officials are trying to increase the

income of the corporation through various means. They are now exploring the ways on how to fill the loss of revenue. The officials are planning to crack the whip on illegal hoarding owners and increase their income. It may be emphasised here that the lollypops have been erected at 20 important roads across GHMC limits and the number of these board runs into hundreds. With the eviction of these advertisement boards, the GHMC may now bring in stricter rules for flexis and vinyl hoardings that pop up without any official permission. This is likely to add more than expected revenues. A GHMC committee recently recommended that the hoardings should not be put up near temples, educational institutions and tourist sports without proper licence. This is being viewed as another source of income.

ith numerous political viewpoints poured in in support of and against the IAS officers’ indignation to the ‘harassment by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), none had spelt out accurately as to what the officers wanted. Postnoon accessed the representation submitted recently by the IAS officers to the Chief Minister in which they laid out what they wanted. Issues listed and suggestions: n IAS officers required as witnesses should be examined in their respective chambers, as is being done with ministers. n The CBI should include civil servants with knowledge of business rules and experience of decision making in government. Discplinary and punitive measures should be graded according to motives behind the action and degree of involvement. n The Chief Minister should advise the CBI sanction of the

state government under whom the officer worked at the time of alleged irregularity, is must for launching of prosecution, permission by department of prosecutions, government of India is an additional requirement, but not a substitute for the primary sanction by state government. n Officers facing criminal prosecution for acts done during the course of discharging duties of their office should be defended legally by the government. The legal cost should be borne by the government. n Certain government decisions are being questioned as irregular, and officers who have processed the papers being questioned. However, no steps seem to have

been taken to reverse these irregular decisions. Thus the beneficiaries of such allegedly irregular decisions continue to reap benefits, while the IAS officers who processed the paper work are harassed. Hence government should urgently review, reverse, or reconfirm such decisions. n Admittedly the CBI is investigating high stake decisions of State government. But these decisions could not have been taken without explicit approval of the political executives. These decisions could not have been implemented without explicit and tacit approval of concerned ministers. However political executives are being let off and civil servants are being used as scape goats.

While songs like Every Breath You Take by the Police is still very much a favourite, Pehla Nasha from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar still brings out the feeling of falling in love for the very first time. Here is a list of the top five eternally romantic songs that could be played on loop: n Everything I Do by Bryan Adams — Probably known as one of the most classic romantic songs of all time, it broke sales record in both the UK and the USA when it first released. n Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton — Probably one of Clapton’s best, this song was penned by him for Pattie Boyd when they were together. HYDERABAD:

Residents of Hyderabad are in for a rude shock these days as the revision of drinking water tariff by Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has begun to have its impact on the residents. Hundreds of households received inflated bills this month. It wasn't different last month too. It may be recalled that the water board had hiked its tariff in November last year citing severe financial crunch. The rate of tariff hike stood between 50 per cent and 400 per cent, based on the category of consumers. The anger is clearly visible on the faces of residents who are already burdened with continuous inflation and hike in petrol and diesel prices and power tariff.

Bills at will

Faulty methods Officials of the HMWS&SB are not following any set norms, while calculating the amount of water consumed. They are issuing the bills based on the pre-existing data and methods resulting in inflated bills to residents. The officials are taking into consideration the data prepared by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) while generating water usage bills without using its own data. The method that is being followed by the board is that if a building owned by a resident is in commercial category in the GHMC list, the water board is also considering such users under commercial category and sending them bills accordingly, instead of generating the bills as per the consumption. According to the official figures of the board, it has a total of 7.80 lakh drinking water connection in

time with them. In her spare time, Bangari managed to learn tailoring. In the future

Aishwarya Yerra A city is defined by the people who live and work in it. Here we take a look at the human threads that make up our urban tapestry

Minimum charges The other method being followed is imposition of minimum usage charges to consumers who do not have water meters to measure the consumption. This method is also leading to inflated bills and making a hole to the pockets of residents. Interestingly, about 50 per cent of consumers out of a total number of 7.80 lakh citizens do not have water meters. Officials of the corporation are saying that since a majority of customers do not have water meters, they are imposing minimum water charges on them based on the charges received by metered tap connections in a particular area. According to the officials, the consumers who do not have meters would get higher bills compared to those who have meters. They say that the reason for this is that meters will help raise exact bills. The officials are appealing to consumers to procure meters to receive correct bills and avoid excess billing. Reacting on the issue of inflated bills and faulty methods, Water Board Managing Director Adhar Sinha confirmed this and said residents of Hyderabad had received inflated bills and that he had directed the officials to resolve the issue on a case by case basis. “Yes, the issue has come to my notice. Many domestic consumers have received these bills. We will rectify this issue and charge as per the revised tariff. There is no question of burdening domestic customers,” Adhar Sinha told Postnoon. clothes we wore for the flag hoisting have been washed, ironed and put back in the cupboard. And now my bi-annual dilemma begins. I stare at all the Republic Day decorations and knick-knacks that were given to me during the ceremony — I have a Nehru-Gandhi paper brooch, a flag-ribbon brooch and a little plasticpaper flag. Every year, I agonise about how to dispose these articles respectfully. Usually, these paraphernalia end up in a drawer and the pile gets bigger every year frustrating my de-cluttering efforts. Ditto for religious symbols; I still have a 2007 Sai Baba calendar a friend gave me when she returned from Shirdi. Another friend casually handed me a Ganapati picture one day — I’ve had it for two years now! I cannot put any of these things into the dustbin for sure. But what am I supposed to do with them? I also stress about all the flag streamers and festoons that decorated the entire venue of the flag hoisting. How the organisers must be disposing them? I keep worrying about these things — when a picture of the flag or a God is in the newspaper, don’t we discard the newspaper? Argh... it drives me crazy — you get the picture. Obviously, the National Flag made of cotton is kept neatly until the next celebration. But other decorations are discarded like any other trash. Of course, it would be better if we discarded these things in a more respectful manner. Sure, we all seem to be looking for ways to dispose of our national memorabilia respectfully.

The US has a National Flag Code. It provides four steps to destroy a damaged or used flag. One of them is worth following: “Burn the damaged flag with a dignified demeanor. Dig a fire pit in an outdoor area away from flammable grass or trees. Use rags or twigs as kindling to produce an adequate blaze and dispose of the flag by putting it in the fire.” This is what, the US thinks of it, but not us.

For instance, in my family, the practice regarding religious symbols and pictures is to make an offering of them in the holy river. Personally, I agree that national symbols should be disposed with due respect, but there seems to be no prescribed instruction as to how one may do so. ZAKIR HUSSAIN:

MY TAKE ON THE GURU OF TODAY The Internet — will it ever ceases to amaze

Discovering the recording of a great master was like discovering the tomb of King Tut

T

he Internet has revolutionised the world today. After years of being oblivious to some information, I see videos of musical geniuses and get to know facets about them that I never knew till now. It must have been some crazy fan those days that happened to have an old 16mm film camera and converted it to be posted on YouTube. Recently, I saw my own video on YouTube when I was in the University of Washington in 1970! And I have no idea who even posted the video on the Internet.

Guru who? It took me twenty years to become an apprentice to a teacher in India. And the teaching was not an everyday practice — it took place only when you inspired your teacher to come out of his room and tell you what to do while you were practicing. In India, back in those days, you didn’t have to pay a guru with money. You had to pay him with your service, kindness, respect, honour and love. And in turn, he cared for, and educated you. He was more than a guru — he was more like a parent. In future, the guru-student relationship may not be possible. What took twenty years just to become an apprentice has now changed. With information available at your fingertips, there is obviously no need for all that. I am fine with today’s modern technology, but I believe that once you’ve got information, there has to be someone who can help you sift through it and analyse it. And you do need a guru to help you with that. Young musicians today at the age of 18, have twice or thrice as much information as I did when I was 18. Back in those days, if you found a recording of a great master, it was like discovering the tomb of King Tut! All through the student community, the tape would circulate, and we’d be talking about it like people do on the Internet now. When I talk to somebody and say ‘Did you hear that 1962 recording of that great master, they would say, ‘yeah, I have it downloaded!’ And I am sure that a hundred years from now, the information will still be there on the Internet. But what I hope for is that there will still be a capable guru, helping the students understand what they have.

A routine to adhere to My father tutored me from the age of two, until I was 11 years old. My ‘abhyas’ would begin at 3:30 in the morning and go on until 6:30 in the morning. Then, I’d go to school - and that was the routine. And it wasn’t drumming, but only a discussion about drumming and its origins. The discussions centered around the importance and sacredness of the knowledge. I put my theoritical knowledge into practice by playing the tabla once I came home from school.

The ideal guru Many musicians who perform with me take a few students with them even when they travel. When they are at home, they come for lessons every day. They may not live with them like they did before, but they are still allowed to be with them through the day, and discuss music with them — I hope it remains that way. The musicians of today continue to feel that this approach is important. What’s interesting is that musicians today still don’t take money from students. It’s always been the feeling in India that a guru doesn’t teach; the student inspires the lessons. When I teach in California, there are no fees involved — the students come and they hang out. We do six hours of drumming a day, and then go home. Lessons, according to me, are best learnt this way.

2G: Swamy lashes out at Chidambaram

Subramanian Swamy MUMBAI: Terming a Delhi court’s dismissal of his petition against home minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case as “wrong”, Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said he would soon prove the decision wrong in the Supreme Court. He also claimed Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had dossiers on black money stashed away by Indian ministers in foreign banks. “Prima facie, I established a case against Chidambaram and even the court agreed. I wanted the court to summon him to establish his criminality and cross-examine him as to why he agreed to the 2001 pricing and share dilution of companies,” Swamy said while speaking at

the second anniversary lecture of Moneylife Foundation, a notfor-profit organisation. Swamy said that he will soon move the Supreme Court against Chidambaram. He questioned as to why Chidambaram’s role was not being probed in the case. “If A Raja is criminally liable, why can’t Chidambaram’s role be probed,” he asked. “Conviction proceedings cannot be brought at trial stage. The judge acted on a wrong basis,” he alleged. Swamy also slammed several ministers including communications minister Kapil Sibal, as also Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Taking a dig at the prime minister, Swamy said that Manmohan Singh was weak. He also compared Sonia to a ringmaster with a whiplash and Manmohan Singh to a lion. “In Hindi, Singh means a lion,” he said, in a lighter vein. He said that Pakistan’s ISI had dossiers on black money stashed away by Indian ministers abroad. “The ISI knows which minister has how much money in which account in a foreign bank,” he said. IANS

AFP LUCKNOW: The run-up to Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh has set the illegal betting market abuzz with bookies putting their money on a hung House, sources close to the bookmakers said on Sunday. His bedroom was full of smoke when its door was opened in Haridevpur neighbourhood in the southern fringes of Kolkata city, police said. “Saptarishi Sarkar was found dead inside his house. AMETHI: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said that her brother Rahul Gandhi’s aim was not becoming the prime minister or the Congress chief but building up the party, though she also stressed that he would not shirk away from any responsibility entrusted to him. Asked whether time was ripe for her brother to become prime minister, she said: “We in the family do not think like that at all. Rahul’s focus is essentially on building the party as also towards pushing the development of UP. If his work requires him to hold any position, he will take it up,” she told mediapersons during her tour of Rahul’s Amethi parliamentary constituency, where she has undertaken campaigning, and in her mother’s Rae Bareli seat. “Rahul does not see his career in terms of becoming prime minister or the party president. things would be different in a month’s time when 10 states vote at once and almost a fifth of all delegates are decided. “Our goal is to get to Super Tuesday, where we’re in much more favorable territory,” Gingrich said on NBC’s Meet the Press, adding that he expects to do much better in conservative southern states. Pvt sector defence manufacturing growing in City tributed by designing and manufacturing of defence products. The 350-employee company expects to increase its turnover by 25-30 per cent in next 18 months with the new defence projects of France and Israel. It also has plans to increase its employee base to 450 people. Talking about the offset policy, Vidyasagar said it is helping

industry get orders from international companies and to upgrade its technologies for manufacturing defence equipment. India has revised the offset policy in buying the French Rafale jets through a massive $11 billion MMRCA deal. The French company needs to procure 50 per cent of the value of the imported defence products from Indian companies. This would benefit Indian defence industry to get manufacturing orders of $5.5 billion from the French company. This would create a lot of

demand and market for defence production companies. It also improves the skillset of the companies and generates employment in the sector, he said. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) designs and develops defence products with private participation at various levels. The ideas of scientists at DRDO are transformed into reality at various industries in the city. This research and development (R&D) work of DRDO would contribute to almost 30 per cent of the private industry business, says D Vidyasagar, managing director,

SEC Industries. The other area of business comes from City-based public sector organisations like Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The prototype designed by DRDO enters mass production at these companies, he said. These public sector undertakings do not manufacture the entire range of products by themselves but outsource different sub-assemblies to different private companies. Their primary role is to integrate sub-assemblies to make a final product. Some of the private industries that are interacting with laboratories at the prototype stage also mass produce sub-assemblies. The high security concern components like warheads and explosive material are directly manufactured by the PSUs. Industry is facing serious difficulty with political agitation and lack of adequate power supply. The cost of the production is three times higher with the use of diesel generator.

GoM to meet on ATF import, FDI&AI Sensex up NEW DELHI: In a bid to safeguard interests of ailing aviation sector, a Group of Minister will meet later this week to give final touches on allowing investments in Indian carriers by foreign airlines, direct import of jet fuel by Indian carriers and Air India’s financial restructuring plan. The GoM meet on Thursday may also decide on the investment cap by foreign airlines in buying equity in Indian carriers, official sources said. The GoM

is also likely to take a decision on allowing Indian airlines directly import aviation turbine fuel to get some breather from the high sales tax regime imposed by state governments. During the meeting, cashstrapped Air India’s financial restructing plan (FRP) and turnaround plan (TAP) would come up for a review and a decision on injecting additional equity into the national carrier is likely to be taken. The debt-ridden carrier has outstanding loans and dues worth

`67,520 crore, of which `21,200 crore is working capital loan, `22,000 crore is long-term loan on fleet acquisition, `4,600 crore is vendor dues besides an accumulated loss of `20,320 crore, according to official figures. Editorials DECONGEST CITIES, ‘outsource’ housing

W

hen a growing economy is providing Indians with opportunities and benefits like never before, the stark reality of about 50 crore people without houses looms large — as per a recent Ficci estimate. Government after government come up with schemes for affordable housing but all their combined efforts haven't prevented people from flooding to tier-1 cities and putting enormous strain on resources and infrastructure. The need of the hour is to shift focus to provision for affordable dwellings in tier-2 cities and large towns. There is also a reluctance to opt for 'low cost' housing provided by the government due to the middle class stigma of accepting something 'cheap' — though sensible. The only way in which people can be convinced to drop their plans to move to big cities is to rope in private sector and flood the market with affordable apartments so that going for them becomes the norm rather than an exception.

WHY WE LOVE Fidel Castro

F

or Right Wing capitalists, Fidel Castro is a gift that keeps on giving. From tirades in the 70s that would make Hugo Chavez look like a choir-boy, to behind the scenes puppetry that put the M in Machiavellian. Now, the icon of every teenage rebel has released his memoirs, so far so Free Market. Entitled Time Guerrilla, it charts Castro’s life from... well... birth to 1958, the year in which he came to power in Cuba. The fact that he doesn’t cover the Bay of Pigs, or the Cuban Missile Crisis is disheartening, but it’s sure to be full of other vitriol-fuelled episodes. Rumour has it that it was originally going to be called Reflections, thanks the stars Fidel got his groove back and changed it!

Decision or derision: Spectroscopy of scams Money Talk A Saye Sekhar

O

ne step forward and two steps backwards. The forward step is the revolutionary verdict of the Supreme Court a couple of weeks ago scrapping of income tax levied on Vodafone for a transaction happened outside the country. Foreign investors found a reason to smile. The verdict on 2G scam scrapping 122 licences pushed into a limbo the chances of the same foreign companies coming into the country with huge investments. This decision would jeopardise lives of over 25,000 employees working with the telcos, and leave the telecom infrastructure up for sale, if not render it useless. The six crore customers, however, can move to other telcos using number portability. The ramifications are not beyond anybody’s guess. Telenor is considering, apart from legal options, exiting India. The Norwegian company’s exposure in India is estimated at `14,000 crore. Russian telco Sistema, part of a conglomerate in India that invested $2.5 billion, is considering ‘alternative’ option. Sistema’s share in the Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd (SSTL) is 56.68 per cent, of which the Russian Government holds 17.14 per cent. The public sector banks have a loan exposure in excess of `26,000 crore to telcos, including Swan Telecom, Unitech, Loop, STel and Datacom (Videocon), which lost their 2G licences. Almost a year ago, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) fixed the base price for 6.2 MHz pan India start-up 2G spectrum at `10,972.45 crore. This is a manifold increase — almost six times — from the R`1,658 crore at which the spectrum was allocated to the new players (whose licences are now revoked). The Comptroller and Auditor-General of India pegged the 2G scam at `1.76 lakh crore. The mobile subscriber base in 2001 was a niggardly four million in India, while it zoomed to 350 million by 2008. But keeping the entry fee for the spectrum licences at 2001 level is one folly highlighted by the CAG.

Exorcism

Pochampally is synonymous with the tradion of Andhra, and it felt good to see ur focus story. Also interesting was the what women want in a car story. Rather than taking the oft repeated stories on fancy cars, this one was a refreshing read. Good ideas and better execution-its a good deal I must say! The only problem I have is to find the paper at all outlets-maybe its time to gear up with the circulation? Colleges and universities are great places to keep the papers, and not to forget-the hitech city. Naveen Jonna Madhapur

I read the story on exorcism that was published in your paper. Its really sad and disgusting to see people using such kind of measures and abuse innocent girls in guise. No matter how much we claim to have progressed in terms of education and awareness these practices still continue to haunt the society. It’s a sad state of affairs. Apart from that there are lots of fun articles like leave for love and I really enjoyed today's gourmet central. It was a good read. Good job! Siddhant Sharma Begumpet

The numbers suggested by the CAG, the numbers pertaining to licence fee paid and the loans extended by the banks have no correlation to one another. Now the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court surely pocked the investor-friendly image of the country. It may seem digression from the 2G scam, but look at the way the slew of CBI cases and the charges of embezzlement of `1 lakh crore are being used for tarnishing the State’s image, for the veracity of these numbers is a moot question. The Antrix-Devas ISRO scam, which smudged the character of Madhavan Nair and three other space scientists, would also inflict no less a damage to the country’s image. Coming to brass tacks, The foreign partners of the Telcos are already warning their peers elsewhere against considering India as an investment destination and on the rancorous campaign they have been subjected to as a ‘gratification’ to their participation in the economic activity of the country. The allotment of the 2G spectrum on a firstcome-first-served (FCFS) basis was found fault

with by the Supreme Court, as it could have intentionally favoured a company; or a participant could have made it to the list by accident and that there was no pre-qualification assessment done. True. Yet, the verdict might deter enthusiastic investors from coming into the country with money bags. Andhra Pradesh recently conducted a Partnership Summit and boisterously claimed that it had signed agreements for projects worth `6.40 lakh crore. This is just a case in point for the debate. Would anyone of them come forth after all this brouhaha to get muddled in the puddle of controversies? Which IAS officer would append his signature on any of these files and with what professional protection or insulation? What message are we sending across the globe and to achieve what? Road crater

Good column, photos

Hyderabad is going through a massive transformation and good infrastructure, roads and traffic management has become critical for the growth of this city. The recent incident of finding a crater in the middle of the road near NIMS comes as a big shock and it throws light on the pathetic state of affairs in the city. Moreover, the city authorities have been digging up on all major roads for the Metro Rail Project which will increasingly cause a lot of chaos in terms of traffic in the city. I hope the GHMC has a plan to tackle such problems, otherwise it will be a nightmare to commute in the city. Kumar H Kondapur

n what could be termed a landmark move, the IRDA has proposed that it be made mandatory for insurance companies to provide health cover for people with HIV. And for this section of society that has been marginalised and frowned upon for a long time, has been forced to face public ridicule and deal with recurring medical costs this move has come as relief. The move is slated to come into effect from October 1, 2012. “This is a great move. But it remains to be seen how much coverage will be provided for these people. Although treatment is free at ART centres, it is not the case elsewhere. Also people with HIV tend to fall ill frequently and require regular hospitalisation. The policy should be designed in such a way that all these factors are covered,” says Dr Lavanya Nutankalva, infectious diseases specialist at Apollo Hospital. According to Dr Parthasarathy, director, APSACS, the IRDA had been working on this for the last one year. “Given the working conditions HIV+ people work in, their low stamina, low immunity due to which they fall ill frequently they need a cover of this kind. Also in case of death this cover will be a boon for their families who have to fend for themselves,” he says. He goes on to add, “Since most of these insurance companies work on certain profit motives, there are

still a lot of finer details that need to be worked on like the premium, mortality and other modalities.” While people working with HIV patients believe that the stigma associated with the condition is coming down over the years, there is still a lot more that needs to be done. For instance, people with HIV have been receiving more acceptance at the work place and in society and treatment for HIV is provided free of cost at ART centres across the City. However, there are other expenses that these people face due to frequent hospitalisation and illness that could be effectively covered by a health insurance. “This move is good news for people with HIV. Why should they be marginalised? Insurance is a risk cover but not all companies are willing to take that risk. More often than not 90 per cent of the people who have HIV are victims of circumstances and it is unfair to marginalise them for no fault fo theirs,” says Dr Divya T Sudarshan, gynaecologist and obstetrician at the Happy Women Clinic. One niggling factor of doubt here however, remains that will insurance companies rarely provide cover for peo-

reast milk is the healthiest form of milk for babies. WHO recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life and then supplemented breastfeeding for up to one or two years or more. Here are some common myths.

ple requiring outpatient care. “Frequent outpatient care can burn a hole in their pockets. Even in case of diabetic patients insurance companies rarely provide a cover for outpatient charges. Usually these companies only provide a

cover for inpatient (hospitalisation) charges. There is no cover provided whatsoever for medications, diagnostic tests and other medical care required by people. In case of an HIV+ person these charges can be a burden and need to be considered while designing policies for them,” says Dr Lavanya.

n Myth: Bottle-fed milk is similar to breast milk: Fact: Breast milk is uniquely superior to bottle-fed milk. Firstly, the nutritional composition of breast milk is best suited to the baby’s needs. It has got the right proportion of nutrients like water, proteins, carbohydrates, cholesterol and antibodies (creates immunity and protects the baby against infections). Secondly, breast milk is easily digestible — it takes two hours to digest breast milk compared to four hours for formula milk. Thirdly, there is evidence to suggest that breast fed babies are less likely to be obese. Bottle fed babies are usually more ‘chubby‘and the fact remains that a ‘chubby baby’ does not necessarily mean a ‘healthy baby’. Fourthly, breast feeding helps the mother too. Women return back to pre pregnancy shape and weight quicker if they breast feed. Also, they are more likely to be healthy than women who have not breast fed. Finally, breast feeding creates a special bonding experience between mother and child that cannot be replaced with bottle feeding. n Myth: Breast feeding prevents breast cancer Fact: Breast feeding is protective against breast cancer. There is now strong evidence to suggest that the longer a woman breast feeds during her life time, the less likely she would develop breast cancer. However it is important to remember that breast feeding cannot prevent breast cancer. It only reduces the chances of developing breast cancer. ARE ERRATIC HEARTBEATS TIED TO

UNEXPLAINED STROKES? Identifying and treating patients for irregular rhythm could reduce the risk of stroke by 40 per cent compared to reducing the risk by treating them with aspirin

PREGNANCY SIMPLIFIED

WASHINGTON: Occasional erratic heartbeats seem to trigger about a fifth of unexplained strokes, while a third of the survivors leave hospital with the cause of their stroke still undetermined. “Identifying and treating these patients for irregular rhythm could reduce the recurrence of stroke by 40 per cent compared to reducing the risk by treating them with aspirin,”

said Daniel J Miller, study coauthor and senior staff neurologist at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. “The cause doesn’t make a difference if there isn’t a treatment, and recently two new medications — dabigatran and rivaroxaban — have been approved by the FDA to treat this problem,” said Miller, according to a Henry Ford statement.

The study confirmed a 2008 report that found 13 of 56 patients (23 per cent) whose heart rhythms were measured by automated monitors for 21 days had intermittent, or paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Such episodes can last for a few seconds up to several days. The study suggested that erratic beats of less than 30 seconds might indicate more

prolonged episodes of PAF that lead to small blood clot formation in hearts of patients with otherwise unidentified causes for their strokes. Miller and colleagues examined the medical records of 156 patients (half women) who had undergone monitoring no more than six months after a stroke, most of them for 21 days. Ninety-seven per cent were not taking prescription

anticoagulation drugs. Patients identified at study entry with premature atrial contractions — the most common type of erratic heartbeats — were 13.7 times more likely to have PAF than those without the rhythm problems. “That’s a very high risk,” Miller said. These findings were presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2012. IANS

SO ARE YOU PREGNANT?

Y

ou’ve been feeling a little off for some time now and just can’t put your finger on the reason. But have you stopped to think that those signs that have been bothering you might be your body’s way of telling you that you’re pregnant? Pause, rewind a bit and analyse those symptoms. And if they match some of the ones listed below it might be time to pay your doc a visit for some good news. n Food cravings: This

may seem like a cliché, but your food cravings could signal pregnancy. This is not a hard and fast rule. If your cravings are accompanied with some of the other symptoms then you might want to buy that home kit. n Tender breasts: If you notice that your breasts are swollen and tender to touch or your nipples get darker you may have successfully conceived. n Implantation bleeding: About a week after

ovulation you may find spotting, a slight staining of a pink or brown colour, or cramping. This is caused by the fertilised egg that has burrowed into the endometrial lining. n Frequent urge to pee: Once you’ve conceived the hormone hCG is produced in your body and you may find yourself going to the bathroom more often. n Fatigue: High levels of the hormone progesterone can make

you feel as if you’ve run a marathon. n Morning sickness: The proverbial morning sickness is a sure sign of pregnancy. As early as a couple of days following conception, you may begin feeling queasy. n You’ve missed a period: If you’re usually regular and your period is late, it’s worth trying a pregnancy test. A missed period is the surest sign of pregnancy. Source: www.babycenter.in

STUDENTS SPEAK Coolest thing about college. The student and teacher relationship; we have a very friendly association with our teachers. We can approach them at any given time. They support us in every initiative that we plan to take up.

Fashion trend in college. The juniors have to wear a uniform so there is nothing much we can do. But we have bags and accessories to make up for that. T-shirts are also banned; so we mix and match formal shirts with t-shirts inside. Girls wear jeans with long kurtas. They also accessorise them with bags, junk jewellery and trendy footwear.

Coolest hangout. Canteen and cafeteria. We get the cheapest food in our canteen. From Rs8–12 we can have a proper meal. Apart from those, we hang out at the hut. We have a hut outside our college and we get very tasty Mirchi bajjis there.

Music played on your ipod. Kolveri di Chikni chameli Carnival of rust Ringa ringa

Any change you want in the college? We have a dress code and juniors, uniforms. The only change that we want is lifting of the dress code. Maybe the authorities need to change that.

Lecturer Speaks Dr CRK Reddy: HOD Computer Science Department

• What advice do you want to give your students? Real world problems rarely ever have textbook solutions. As Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited; imagination encircles the world.” • How much scope do you see for the aviation industry and education in Hyderabad? A very fast economic growth combined with sharp technological progress, have seen aviation in India and China leaping to phenomenal heights. As per a statement by the honourable minister of civil aviation, India needs at least three million trained employees in the industry during the next five years. • How is your college different from the others? It is the only institute in the entire country offering a Bachelor of Science degree from the USA. The first batch of students from the college graduated in August 2011 and we take pride in informing that all our students have been placed in leading aviation industries like Air IndiaSATS, Rockwell Collins, Honeywell Inc, Infotech, etc. Companies like Tata Power, Cognizant and L & T have offered placements for the current outgoing batch. • What have you learnt from your students? Learning is an ongoing process. Faculty and students are encouraged to continuously upgrade their skills, do research and publish papers, etc. Personally, when I interact with my students I am always enriched. • How do you deal with shortcomings of your students? Very often we have seminars and talks by guest lecturers and industry experts which ensure that the students stay up-to-date with current happenings. There is constant learning engagement between the faculty and students. We have a separate head of department for the Academic and Student Affairs department and this department facilitates conversation between faculty and students.

our years back, Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology branded itself with Vaughn College of New York and signed an MOU. Since then SNIT Vaughn Institute of Aeronautics and Technology has been teaching specialised courses in Engineering Avionics and Airline/ Airport Management. Despite the political unrest in the City, students of this college have battled it out and are all set now to roll out the carpet for their annual fest Udaan. “We have been associated with Udaan since three years and we did not want to give the fest a miss due to the Telangana agitation. It’s conducted in September every year but this year due the agitation we had to postpone the fest,” says Rohit a third year B Tech student. Despite back-to-back exams, they worked their way towards the fest. It’s scheduled for February 9– 11. Udaan has been happening every year now for the last three years and students believe that they have learnt management and organisation skills through this event. “Apart from what we learn in the class we need other skill and this we learnt by organising the fest. We have learnt anger manage-

ment, team work, adaptability and strategising. We got a taste of the real world,” says Ganesh, another third year, B Tech student. Students believe in team work and responsibility. Unlike other colleges, there are only 300 students in this college and all have been

equally participating in the fest. Small number is not a bane but a blessing because students believe that the true talent of the college has come out. “We have divided ourselves in seven departments; cultural, technical,

management, sports, publicity and sponsorship. We are expecting about 4,000 students to participate in the event,” added Ganesh.

TRENDY AND TRIBAL

A woman’s most-loved possession, jewellery, has always been close to the heart. The variety of tribal ornaments with an intriguing mix of earthy and raw pieces of accessories is a sight to behold

Isha Mukoo isha.m@postnoon.com

O

ur country prides itself in its diverse and colourful cultures, languages and architecture. One more on that list, which is also every girl’s best friend is jewellery; from semi-precious stones to diamonds to platinum. One thing that has sneaked into girl’s jewellery is the beautiful tribal pieces. Colourful beads combined with metal makes a curious mix of accessories that enhances ones personality. These beautiful pieces are inspired from different states of India, and extend to patterns from African and South American origins as well. Also, when infused with religious and cultural symbols, it commands its own

earthly and rustic charm making it unique in its own way. Jewellery designer Suhani Pitti, known for her creative and experimental ways of tribal jewellery says this artistic, yet raw jewellery is an interesting way to keep our past and present connected. “It tells us about our past and is at the same time jazzed up enough to be a part of our present. Just because it is tribal does not make it frivolous and any less important than any other jewellery. My entire collection is tribal in thought but is as serious as any modern jewellery.” She shares. Each tribe has its own unique style of jewellery, which makes them different from others. Be it wood, clay, shells or even crude metals; it not only makes it look rustic but also lends a charm to it and sets it apart from the usual ones. Tribal accessories are normally made from locally available products. The very not-sofinessed look is what makes it more appealing in contrast to the finer metals and stones. Jewellery designer Bunty Bajaj feels it gives

a unique and chic look to the whole ensemble. “I love tribal jewellery. It’s very interesting the way they combine stones and metals making it so unique. I used to own nose rings that Tibetan tribal people wear and had converted it to ear rings and it used to look so different, yet chic. The combination of different colourful stones like corals and beads that are used to make neck pieces with a little silver

added gives it a twist,” she shares, adding that in Hyderabad it would be youngsters mainly sporting tribal jewellery as it has a youthful vibrancy to it. Since it goes with any ensemble and highlights it and makes it look different from the usual clichéd accessories, youngsters love it.” If we look around in India we have a variety of states, which take pride in this type of jewellery. Rajasthan is one such state where one can see a riot of colours, in the form of belts with shells, beads and even coins. It is here that one can see a variety of earrings, bangles, anklets, necklaces and more. Madhya Pradesh boasts of jewellery from the Bastar tribe, which makes jewellery from beads, cane and even grass. If that is not enough, there are also traditional ornaments made out of silver, glass, copper, peacock feathers and wild flowers as well. Arunachal Pradesh nestles two

tribes called Karka Gallong and Wanchos. Apart from the beautiful locales, it also has its own share of beautiful metal coin necklaces and waistbands of leather and stone studded ornaments. One can also find accessories made of ivory and brass in addition to the colourful beads and bird feathers. Women from Wanchos make earrings out of cane, bamboo and glass beads; one can also spot women from Karka Gallong wearing heavy coiled iron rings. Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes of Meghalaya boast of necklaces with thick red coral beads and thin fluted stems of glass. The Bhutia tribe of Sikkim is also known for its beautiful jewellery. The people of this tribe make decorative accessories from coral, turquoise, silver, gold and Zee stones.

I feel blessed to be PART OF RUSHI

S

upriya Sailja is yet another beauty pageant winner who chose acting in films over a long-term career in modelling. She will soon be seen in Raj Madiraju's Rushi in which she plays the role of a medico. It's an unlikely debut for someone who was the second runner up at Gladrags Megamodel contest in 2010. She even won the Most Beautiful and Most Popular titles at the Global Beauty Queen contest. “I feel blessed to be part of Rushi. When you have scope to perform right in your first film, it can't get any better,” Supriya smiles. So why did she choose acting over modelling? “Acting in films gives you a bigger stage to showcase your talent and the best thing about it is that you get to interact with the public. It was a personal choice. Besides, I am a workaholic and I feel a lot of positive energy when I am in front of the camera or walking the ramp,” she says. Having graduated with a BA in Economics from Mithi Bai College in Mumbai, she agrees that playing the role of a medical student was quite a learning experience. “We shot quite a lot of scenes in Mamta Medical College in Khammam. I had the opportunity to speak to a lot of students in the college to understand more about their lives and the ordeal they have to go through to become doctors,” she reveals, going on to add, “My character Puja goes through a similar transformation in the film.” Was it tough to face the camera on the first day? “Oh yes. I was really tensed on the first day but thanks to my director Raj, I think I pulled it off pretty well. He advised me to just be myself and I was moved by the confidence he had on me,” she says. Before commencing the film's shoot, the entire team had a 20 days’ workshop, which helped them to understand their characters and also what they were expected to do. But no one told her about the

scene to be shot in an anatomy class. “We had to dissect a dead body and I freaked out. For a long time, I didn't want to shoot for the scene but my director kept encouraging me to do it,” she chuckles. And another time, one of the kids in the film,

Gaurav, wasn't in the mood to take part in the shoot. “Gaurav just didn't budge despite our repeated requests. The director had to call off the shoot on that day. The incident helped me understand how to cope up with last-minute changes. I am lucky to have worked with such a fabulous team. I hope I work with them again,” she says, to sign off.

Supriya Sailja is upbeat about her debut film Rushi in which she's playing a medico. She tells Postnoon more about the film and why she chose acting over modelling

ormer child star Christina Ricci is reportedly dating actor James Heerdegen. According to a website, the two met on the set of the actress’ ABC series Pan-Am. The new couple recently spent time at the W Retreat & SpaVieques island in Puerto Rico, and stayed in a luxe ocean front suite. “They lounged on the deck of their room a lot,” an insider said, adding that they “walked up and down”. Ricci was previously engaged to actor Owen Benjamin. They split in June 2009.

Specialising in “individualised addiction treatment,” Cirque Lodge has a reputation for catering to a celebrity clientele, reportedly including the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Eva Mendes and Mary-Kate Olsen.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Stanley surges to victory SCOTTSDALE: Kyle Stanley (below) bounced back from a bitter defeat to win the Phoenix Open on Sunday, erasing an eight-shot deficit to triumph a week after his last-round collapse at Torrey Pines. “I’m not sure what I’m thinking right now,” Stanley said. “I just needed to focus on playing golf. I needed to put last week behind me.” Stanley was brought to tears at Torrey after a triple-bogey at the final hole dropped him into a playoff that he lost. On Sunday, however, he was in position to strike as Spencer Levin suffered a similar collapse — surrendering a six-shot overnight lead. Stanley capped a bogey-free 65 with a four-foot par putt and finished with a 15-under total of 269. Ben Crane carded a 66 and finished in second on 270. Levin, who started the round with a six-stroke lead, was seven in front after one hole but finished with a four-over 75 that included a double-bogey seven at the par-five 15th. He settled for third on 271 as Stanley savored a first US PGA Tour victory. “I just didn’t have it,” said Levin, who had led by five shots after the second round. “Maybe I was looking ahead too much and trying too hard. What are you going to do? I tried my best.” The last player to lose in a playoff and rebound with a win the following week was David Toms, who fell in playoff at the Players Championship last year and won the Colonial a week later.

Wales aim to keep it simple Pirate Irwin

DUBLIN: Wales must keep things simple if they are to progress to being an outstanding team, coach Warren Gatland said on Sunday. And the 48-year-old New Zealander, who guided his side to last year’s World Cup semifinals and the 2009 Grand Slam, believes their last-gasp 23-21 defeat of Ireland in their Six Nations opener here will give them real momentum going into next weekend’s home game with Scotland. A last minute penalty by Leigh Halfpenny - after Irish flanker Stephen Ferris was yellowcarded for a questionable spear tackle - accounted for the hosts. “This gives us a massive amount of confidence and momentum for next weekend’s match,” said Gatland, who is also a former coach of Ireland and left under acrimonious circumstances in

2000 when his contract was not renewed. “We are very dangerous when we have our backs to the wall like we were against Ireland but we are also very dangerous when we are confident. “There is a lot of improvement to come in our game. What I tell the guys is be accurate, do the simple things well. If we do that then I think we will do really well in this championship.” Welsh captain Sam Warburton, whose spear tackle in the World Cup semi-final against France lead to his red card which changed the complexion of the match, said that even though Scotland lost to England on Saturday it did not make them easy opposition. “Playing Scotland two years ago it was a really tough match and we know we have to improve a bit next week,” said the 23-year-old flanker, who did not appear for the second-half because of a

dead leg. “We do feel we have more in us, but we are very happy in that we finished strongly and that’s a real boost for us psychologically as the toughest part of test rugby is the last 20 minutes.” While Warburton will not know until Tuesday whether he will be fighting fit for the Scotland game, Gatland was all but resigned to having to replace lock Bradley Davies. Davies received just a yellow card for a more evident spear tackle, than Ferris’, off the ball as well on Irish replacement lock Donncha Ryan which Gatland himself believed should have been a straight red. For Gatland, though, the message for his superb backs — he highlighted wing George North — was the same as what was said at half-time of the Irish match. “We told the boys at half-time in this match to run hard and stay square and they would make inroads. And having listened to that they did just that.”

Lotus tell Kimi to aim for fourth place LONDON: Lotus have set Kimi Raikkonen a clear target of taking the former Renault team to fourth place in the Formula One constructors’ championship in his comeback season, according to a Reuters report. Last year the champions Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes all finished above the former champions Renault, who are now to be called Lotus, but the team’s co-owner Gerard Lopez said beating one of them was a realistic aim. “The hopes are to have a strong car, strong drivers, of which one of them is obviously

an ex-world champion,” he said in a factory presentation of the new Renault-powered E20 car on the Lotus website. “Then you have to bring the car up to the front of the pack, probably trying to aim for fourth as a reasonable goal for this season.” Raikkonen has not raced in Formula One since 2009, when he left Ferrari to make way for the double champion Fernando Alonso and embark on a new life in rallying. The Finn, triumphant in 18 grands prix with McLaren and Ferrari, and the 2007 title winner with the Italian team, is one of an

unprecedented six champions on the starting grid this year. His team-mate is the French driver Romain Grosjean, the GP2 champion who started seven races for Renault in 2009 without scoring a point. “I am happy to be back,” Raikkonen said when reminded how difficult the seven-times champion Michael Schumacher had found coming back with Mercedes. “It will be something slightly different than it used to be when I was in Formula One with a different team. A little bit different regulations but everybody’s different.”

GIGANTIC! Jim Slater

INDIANAPOLIS: Ahmad Bradshaw ran six yards for the deciding touchdown with 57 seconds remaining on Sunday to give the New York Giants a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46. It was the fourth Super Bowl triumph for the Giants, who also defeated the Patriots in the 2008 NFL championship spectacle and captured the crown in 1987 and 1991. Before a crowd of 68,658 spectators at the dome-enclosed stadium where his older brother Peyton stars for the Indianapolis Colts, New York’s Eli Manning (right) guided the Giants on an 88-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes capped by Bradshaw’s scoring run. “It just feels god to win a Super Bowl no matter where you are or what stadium it is,” Manning said. Manning was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after completing 30-of-40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown. Brady made two late throws to the end zone from midfield, the last on the game’s final play, but New York defenders made certain they would not be denied a fairytale finish after starting the season 7-7 and winning six games in a row for the title when one defeat would have doomed their unlikely title dream. Clinging to a 17-15 lead, the Patriots were shut down near midfield and forced to punt, the Giants taking the ball at their own 12-yard line with 3:46 to play. Manning completed a 38-yard pass to Mario Manningham that was confirmed on a video replay

challenge to put New York at midfield, hit Manningham again for another 16 yards and Hakeem Nicks for 14 more to reach New England’s 18-yard line with 2:00 remaining. Three plays later, Bradshaw ran untouched into the end zone for a touchdown that gave the Giants a 21-17 lead. A two-point conversion run failed, leaving 57 seconds for the Patriots to try and score a touchdown to win the game. New England’s only chance was to surrender the touchdown because otherwise the Giants could have been able to run the clock almost to zero and have a chance at a short field goal to win the game.

The Patriots began the second half with another touchdown march, this one of 79 yards and finished off by Brady’s 12-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Aaron Hernandez to put New England ahead 17-9 only 3:40 into the third quarter. New York answered on field goals of 38 and 33 yards by Lawrence Tynes to pull within 1715 entering the fourth quarter. Brady was intercepted on the second play of the fourth quarter by New York’s Chase Blackburn, but New England’s defense forced the Giants to punt, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Two Patriots penalties in the shadow of their own end zone helped the Giants seize a nine-

point lead after only 11:36 had elapsed. New York opened the scoring 6:08 into the game when Brady was whistled for an intentional grounding penalty while standing in the end zone on New England’s first offensive play, the rare defensive score giving the Giants a 2-0 edge. On the ensuing New York possessions, New England’s Sterling Moore forced a fumble from Giants receiver Victor Cruz and the Patriots recovered, but the play was wiped out by a penalty, New England having had too many men on the field. Two plays later, Eli Manning flipped a two-yard touchdown pass to Cruz and the Giants led 9-0.

Capello slams FA decision on Terry Barnaby Chesterman

LONDON: Manchester United staged a stunning fightback from three goals down as Javier Hernandez’s late equaliser rescued a dramatic 3-3 draw against Chelsea in one of the games of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team seemed to be heading for a heavy defeat as an own goal from United defender Jonny Evans gave Chelsea the lead late in the first half before Juan Mata and David Luiz added further goals for the Blues soon after the interval. But Wayne Rooney finally sparked United into life with two penalties midway through the second half and the champions’ frenzied pressure was rewarded when Mexican striker Hernandez headed home from a Ryan Giggs cross with six minutes left. The draw leaves secondplaced United two points behind leaders Manchester City, but the manner of their remarkable revival should provide a massive confidence boost as they try to overhaul their local rivals. “It was a terrible start after half-time and it’s not easy to come back from three down. It was a massive effort from our players,” Ferguson said. “Once we got over the goals after half-time we played really well. I was pleased with the players. We were by far the better team. “For the neutral it was a great game but I thought it was two

points dropped because we played so well.” Chelsea boss Villas-Boas added: “Of course it feels like a defeat. It isn’t easy to take. It’s a massive recovery from United. Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge was the catalyst as his side took the lead in the 36th minute. His neat piece of skill took him past Patrice Evra on the left side of the United penalty area and he drove in a low cross that clipped David de Gea’s foot before deflecting off Evans into the unguarded goal.

United, whose last league win at Stamford Bridge came 10 years ago, were further behind just 30 seconds after half-time when Fernando Torres whipped a cross to the far post for Spanish winger Mata to lash a sublime volley past de Gea. Chelsea struck again five minutes later when Mata’s teasing free-kick was met by Luiz and the Brazilian defender’s header glanced in off Rio Ferdinand’s shoulder. Rooney gave United a lifeline when he drove home a penalty after Howard Webb ruled that

Sturridge’s 58th minute challenge on Evra was worthy of a spot-kick. And England striker Rooney struck from the spot again 11 minutes later when Danny Welbeck tumbled over Branislav Ivanovic’s out-stretched leg. Suddenly United were rampant and Hernandez came off the bench to cap their comeback with a clinical close-range header from Giggs’ cross in the 84th minute. Earlier on Sunday, Newcastle striker Papiss Demba Cisse ‘senjoyed second-half strike secured a 2-1 win against Aston Villa.

Mali, Ghana move into semis Nick Reeves

LIBREVILLE: And then there were four - Mali and Ghana completed the semi-final line-up at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday with tense quarter-final wins over Gabon and Tunisia. Mali’s 5-4 penalty shoot out win over the co-hosts in Libreville earned the Eagles a daunting date with Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast in the Gabonese capital on Wednesday. Ghana narrowly avoided the ordeal of a shoot out when defeating Tunisia 2-1 in extra time in a game that ended with tempers frayed and the north Africans down to ten men. The Black Stars have a date with Zambia in Bata, also on Wednesday. “We were not surprised we were taken to extra time by a very good Tunisia team, but the most important thing is that we are in the semi-finals,” said Ghana assistant coach, Kwesi Appiah.

Appiah criticised the ill discipline exhibited by the north Africans towards the end of the match. “They made football look like war and I hope the authorities do something about such bad tackles and behaviour, which are not good for African football,” he said. Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi said his team did not deserve to

crash out at this stage of the competition, while admitting his players became “a little excitable” late in the game. “We are very disappointed we cannot go farther than this because we did not deserve to lose this game, which we dominated but could not score more than a goal,” Trabelsi said.

ROME: England manager Fabio Capello has hit out at his employers the Football Association after they stripped John Terry of the England captaincy due to racism allegations. Terry, 31, was relieved of his duties on Thursday due to an ongoing court case in which he is accused of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers centre-back Anton Ferdinand during a match last year. But that is a decision Capello says he is not comfortable with. “I don’t agree with the decision, I spoke with the chairman [David Bernstein] telling him that in my opinion Terry cannot be punished until the court’s decided — that’s the civil justice, not the sporting one — that Terry has done that which he is accused of,” Capello told a football programme on Italian Rai public television. “For that I felt it was right that Terry should keep the captain’s armband. “However, the fact that the Board has taken this decision is their right when it comes to England.” Terry’s court case is not due to take place until July 9, after the European Championship finals and the FA felt it would be inappropriate to keep him as captain with suspicion hanging over him. “Following the decision to adjourn the court case against John Terry to July, the Football Association confirm he will not captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved,” said the FA’s statement.
