best of the best W

elcome to the “2018 Best of issue”. In 2017, over 1900 people cast their vote to what they thought was the “Best of Napa Valley Life”. We have new winners this year in our third edition of our “Best of” as well as returning winners. This year, we also selected our own categories to showcase with no one particular winner including Best Places to Relax, Best Hiking Programs, Best Equestrian Winery Experience, Best Chocolate and Best Wineries with Art, to name a few. Writer Laura Larson is beginning a new series in Napa Valley Life entitled “Hidden Gems”. There is so much to see and do in the Valley, but not everything is so obvious on Highway 29 or Silverado Trail. Larsen takes us off the beaten path and will give you sneak previews in the coming year of places and things to do that might not be on your radar. If you know of a hidden gem, send me an email at kari.ruel@napavalleylife.com. We appreciate your feedback. Our cover story on Tarla Meditteranean Bar + Grill was a fun story for me to write. When I first discovered Tarla on First Street six years ago, I wasn’t that familiar with Turkish and Greek cuisine. It didn’t take long for me to become a big fan. Chef Michael Powell would often come to my table and ask me to try one of his new creations. I felt honored by the gesture and always gave him my honest opinion. At the end of 2014, Chef Powell had to leave Tarla due to medical reasons and has been missed by many of the regular patrons at the restaurant. The “Dream Team” as owner Yusuf Topal describes it, is coming back to Tarla this spring. Chef Powell and Chef de Cuisine, Jason Naaman are joining together to up-the-bar of the Tarla experience in 2018. That, along with their new happy hour program led by mixologist Stephen Thayer, will give WestEnd Napa a unique culinary experience. Kari Ruel with Tarla owner, Yusuf Topal Photo: Art & Clarity

A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE:

“FEATURED CLIENT SPOTLIGHT”

Building Upon a Dream: Shauna Mackenzie  BY VALERIE OWENS

Living the American dream is one that many aspire to achieve. The ability to serve a need in a community, and thrive is what makes the coined term so ambitious. For Shauna Mackenzie, Proprietor of Balanced Business Group LLC, her tenacity has given her the opportunity to flourish in the Napa Valley. As a young college graduate, Shauna found her passion for the wine industry and met her husband while traveling to New Zealand. Provided with a once in a lifetime opportunity, Shauna took a position with Stonyridge Vineyard and embarked on a journey that would change the course of her life.

“I ended up staying in New Zealand for two years and falling in love with their Winemaker and married him,” said Shauna. While working in New Zealand, Shauna earned the profession of making and selling wine and tasked herself with learning the accounting side of the business. Together, Shauna and her husband made a great team and decided to begin a new chapter in their lives together in California. Today, Shauna and her husband live in the Napa Valley with their adorable young son. Though they left their fruitful careers in New Zealand, their journey was far from over.

In pursuit of the “American Dream,” Shauna asked herself one question. “What can I do that allows me to live in this wine world and that allows me to have a career with my husband while leading a normal life?” For the ambitious entrepreneur, the answer was clear. Shauna had discovered her talents within accounting and furthered her credentials in the business to elevate her career to the next level, and founded Balanced Business Group, LLC in 2012. Providing premium accounting and consulting services for the wine industry, Balanced Business Group prides itself on their amazing team of professionals, their responsiveness and quality. “We have a roster of services that run the gamut,” said Shauna. “We offer everything from basic data entry bookkeeping all the way up to consulting services, advising and helping with cash flow management, budget projection, liaising with banks and helping clients get loans.” With 80 clients and counting, and a reputation for excellence within the valley, the success of Balanced Business Group proves that dreams are attainable. For Shauna Mackenzie, her story, and legacy will leave a footprint in the Wine industry for years to come. “Shauna has been an inspiration as a fellow business owner. It’s been exciting watching her successful firm grow and New Aspect is proud to be one Balanced Business Group clients as well,” said Aaron Kennedy, Managing Partner of New Aspect Financial Services.

Tips for Preparing your home to sell If you plan to sell your home this year, now is a good time to start preparing your home for market.

Tom’s 5 tips to Success! 1. Have property inspections. Be proactive by arranging for a pre-sale home inspections. For $250 to $400, an inspector will warn you about troubles that could make potential buyers balk.

2. Clear the Clutter Clear your kitchen counters of just about everything. Clean your closets by packing up little-used items. Put at least one-third of your furniture in storage, especially large pieces, such as entertainment centers and big televisions. Pack up family photos, knickknacks, and wall hangings to depersonalize your home.

3. Hiring a Staging Consultant

1. Napa Valley Home Cleared of Clutter 2. Napa Valley Home Partially Staged 3. Napa Valley Home with Full Staging

Napa Valley offers some really amazing staging consultants to help you present your home in its best light. Stagers can either blend their inventory in with your existing décor while others will stage certain rooms or an entire home if it happens to be a vacant residence.

4. Professional Photography 95% of today’s home buyer first see the home online and scroll through each photo before deciding to visit the home in person. Professional photos (usually 20-25) in conjunction with Tips 1-3 will help make that all important first impression!

Contact Tom today for a complimentary market valuation of your home or income property. Tom will be donating a portion of his 2018 closing fees to www.NapaNEWS.org to assist in Napa’s recovery from the 2017 wildfires

5. Correct Pricing! No matter what type of market we are in, whether it’s a buyers or sellers, correct pricing can be paramount to your success. Overpricing, you run the risk of losing the first wave of buyers which could include your best buyer! Underpricing (a trendy strategy today) a seller runs the risk of selling the home short of its true market value (in spite of receiving multiple offers.)

Dream TEAM is Coming Back at Tarla Mediterranean Bar + Grill  BY KARI RUEL

I

t’s been six years since Tarla Mediterranean Bar + Grill introduced a unique Turkish and Greek cuisine to the Downtown Napa food scene. In that time, they have expanded their location to include a private dining room that can serve up to 50 people, expanded their catering service and fine-tuned their Happy Hour offerings. The popular healthy menu, first created by Chef Michael Powell has been an on-going staple in the First Street location. Even after Chef Powell reluctantly left Tarla due to health reasons at the end of 2014, his menu has lived on.   Tarla Owner, Yusuf Topal is excited to announce that his “Dream Team” is returning to Napa this year. Chef Powell’s long road to recovery including almost a year at the Mayo Clinic in Tuscon, Arizona is seeing positive momentum. He and his side kick, Chef de Cuisine, Jason Naaman, whom he has worked with for seven years will be sharing the culinary duties this spring and summer at Tarla.    “Downtown is growing,” said Yusuf. “A lot of great changes have happened since we came to the Napa Valley. For us being a local restaurant in Napa offering unique food and something different helps set us apart. We offer Turkish and Greek cuisine with a California fusion. All our dishes are fresh, delicious, flavorful, simple and tasteful and were created by Chef Powell.” Coming back to Napa is a dream come true for Chef Powell.    “Yusuf sounded like he just got the best gift when Jason and I said yes,” said Powell. “He really surprised me. He’s kept in touch since I left and has been the kindest to me. The whole community of Napa has been so supportive and I feel of all the places I’ve lived this is home.”   Jason was one of Michael’s students when he was teaching at a culinary school in Indianapolis.   “After Jason graduated he ended up working for me for almost 7.5 years,” said Powell. “He’s like my little brother. When he was in school he asked me to train him and teach him. He wanted to be the best. I probably pushed him harder than anyone else I mentored.” 30

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

“He’s an unbelievable talent,” added Powell. “His goal was to be better than me and I told well you are going to be the chef at Tarla at age 30 and that beats me. So, he wins.”   The Indianapolis native, Jason returns to Napa after an award-winning stint at the Craft House in Dana Point.    Chef Powell said he is looking forward to upping the standard at the popular eatery located on First and School Street.   “Most of the menu is healthy,” said Powell. “I would like to revamp the menu. I need to re-taste everything and update the standards and bring it to a current mode. I plan to go to Greece this summer and Yusuf wants to send to me Turkey. It will expand our Turkey and Greek Mediterranean offers. I’d also like to see a better presentation of fish on the menu and give more options, but I also know space is limited.”    “Jason and I have worked together for so long so I am excited to have that collaboration back and add some of his influences on the future menu and help develop him.”    Being a chef is all Powell has wanted to do since he was seven years old.

“My grandfather was from Greece,” said Powell. “He died when I was four, but all my memories of him was either around food or in the kitchen. After he died everyone always talked about the parties. He was promoted to a pastry chef at age 21 and transitioned to be an executive chef right after that. He used to throw and the food that he would cook. I thought I want to be remembered like that. I’ve pretty much been unrelenting in the quest to be a chef ever since.    Powell started working at kitchens at age 15. He Graduated top of the class with Francis Roth Award from the CIA in New York. At 19-years old he was

working at the number one restaurant in New York City. He was promoted to a pastry chef at age 21 and transitioned to be an executive chef right after that.   Yusuf is feeling optimistic about 2018 and the direction Tarla is moving. This past fall he brought on mixologist, Stephen Thayer to head up the bar and create an unforgettable Happy Hour menu and expand the happy hours to include Sunday through Wednesday from 2 p.m. – close. Thayer introduces a new cocktail every day.    “Napa and Visitors alike want to call Tarla their own and are always coming back,” said Thayer.

Yusuf agreed. “People coming through our door expect excellence and it’s our goal to provide that for them,” he said. 1480 First Street, Napa, 707.255.5599. Tarlagrill.com BEST OF 2018

A New Napa Book Answers the Question:

WHAT TO DO W

e all get asked, as a local, what are your favorite things to do in the Napa Valley? Visitors also want to know what are the top things to do. You can search the internet, read reviews or click on pop up ads from your phone for ideas. We all have our favorites, but sometimes we forget the best places right under our own nose. Thanks to St. Helena local, Marcus Marquez for writing a book that can take some of that Marcus Marquez pressure off. We all love bucket lists, but there is nothing better than a list of 100 things to do before you die in the Napa Valley. But better yet a book that you can pick a page and go do it! Who is ready to complete this “100 things to do” list?    Marcus wanted to cover experiences from American Canyon all the way to Calistoga. From hikes to aspirational lodging to curated tastings. In this book, for example, it doesn’t just tell you to stay at Auberge Du Soliel, it also has tips that help guide you to roam the sculpture garden. The “park” features around 110 sculptures from sixty-five California based artists. How many times have you been told to go and check out the views from the terrace? Well, now it is memorialized in the “100 Things to do in Napa Valley Before You Die.” If you haven’t done it, Marcus suggests you go right away.    When you have a book that every year is the best travel series book you expect to find things that you say “yes, that is something I should do before I die.” Marcus gets asked all the time if you can only choose one thing in your book what would it be? He grins and says “that question is always so tough for me.” If he is going to die tomorrow he would experience the dining at the French Laundry.   “It is a long experience and you get to use all of your senses 36

during the dinner,” said Marcus, who recently went to the French Laundry and said it was the best experience ever. “They are firing on all cylinders. The service was friendly and professional. Dinner felt quick (yes, he said quick) and polished to perfection.”    When picking the 100 list he really wanted to have things in it where it takes you out of your comfort zone. Experiences that you think you know what it is about, but don’t really know until you do it yourself.   Marcus opened up his instagram account to be public @ originalmarmar to share his experiences with anyone who wants to follow. On social media, he is still creating more lists of things to do before you die. You will be able to find him at new restaurant openings and learn tips of things you should do when you are exploring Napa Valley.    “Napa Valley is a beautiful place,” said Marcus. “Every single day here is a new adventure, a new beginning, and I can’t wait to share it with you. 'Make Napa Valley your own' is my advice on what to do when you are here!” Available in retail in Napa Valley or on Amazon.

Hiking Program LAND TRUST OF NAPA COUNTY

W

hether you are a seasoned hiker with a well-worn pair of hiking boots, or someone who likes to take a simple stroll outdoors now and then, Land Trust of Napa County’s hiking program offers something for everyone.    Led by Land Trust employees and volunteers trained in wilderness first aid, participants not only get a healthy dose of fresh air and scenic views, but a firsthand look at some of the lesser known forests, prairies and waterfalls found in Napa Valley.   Examples include exploring reptiles and amphibians on their Dunn-Wildlake Preserve, stargazing with high powered telescopes at their Wantrup Preserve, paddling the Napa River, scanning the skies above the Newell Preserve in American Canyon for birds of prey and trekking to the highest waterfall in Napa County; Zim Zim Falls near Lake Berryessa.   Signing up for a hike is easy on their website with new listings usually published in March and September. Nearly all of the outings are free with only a few that require a membership before signing up. This is a small price to pay, all things considered, especially if you want to take part in an experience like the Joseph Phelps Vineyard Hike and Tasting.   You can even sign-up for a workday if you’re looking to get your hands dirty. Most of the Land Trust’s preserves require 38

some sort of upkeep, so eager volunteers are always needed for picturesque places like the Linda Falls Preserve and the Dunn-Wildlake Preserve.   Established in 1976 by seven founding members, the Land Trust has dedicated itself to permanently protecting land here in the valley. A record conservation year in 2017 now puts their total acres protected at 70,000, which equates to 14% of Napa County. residential communities, Coombsville is one of Napa Valley’s hidden treasures. Having received its AVA designation in 2011, it is becoming one of Napa’s most sought after regions for wineries to establish a footing both as a premier location to produce grapes and to open space to welcome visitors.    Shadybrook Estate Winery at Rapp Ranch, formally known as Chateau Lane Winery, was purchased in February 2016 by real estate developer and wine producing husband and wife team, David and Alice Alkosser. The 25 acre parcel came with 12 acres of planted vineyards, a state of the art production facility and a sprawling view of the magestic Coombsville hillsides. The acreage offered the Alkosser’s a unique opportunity to produce their award winning wines harvested from the Estate grapes from these vineyards and their 156 acre property in Popes Valley. The Chateau Lane property had an intriguing neighbor in Rapp Ranch, which was renowned in the 80’s and 90’s for its reputation in breeding and training quarter horses. The property contained barns, riding areas, and outdoor training corrals.

The property (formally Reata Winery, Kirkland Ranch & Valley Gate Vineyards) was sold in a joint acquisition in 2013 to wine industry veterans Bill Legion and Ken Laird. He is also the creator of their award winning “Double Lariat” Napa Valley Cabernet.   Bill’s influence at Jamieson Ranch plays a significant role in their guest experiences. After seeing how horses helped his autistic son, he read about the impacts miniature horses had as therapy animals. With a philanthropic vision to give back to the community, Bill founded the Light Horse Foundation at Jamieson Ranch. The program offers therapeutic certification training to miniature horses rescued from challenging environments and gives them an opportunity to reciprocate by providing solace and inspiration for autistic or at-risk children and veterans in therapy.    In addition to their jobs supporting those in need, Jamieson Ranch employs three of the “minis” (Molly, Sweet Jane, and Whinnie) into a family friendly tasting experience at the Ranch in an effort to raise funding for the Light House Foundation. Appropriate for children

and adults alike, this delightful experience offers participants the magical opportunity to interact with the adorable equines and learn from their trainer, Brandy Lipsey, about their history, their jobs as therapy animals and their lives as “employees” of the Light Horse Foundation. Adults begin the experience with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay and conclude with a seated Signature Tasting of 5 of Jamieson Ranch Napa Valley wines. EHLERS ESTATE: Ehlers Estate winemaker Kevin Morrisey selects the varied artists and art works that grace the walls of the historic winery’s tasting room – a welcoming and hospitable environ in which to enjoy their esteemed wines and view the rotating exhibits. Currently on display are vibrant acrylic paintings by Marna Schindler whose bold style and colorful palette contrast appealingly with the artisan interior and old world wood of the original 1886 Ehlers Estate stone barn. 3222 Ehlers Ln., St Helena HALL NAPA VALLEY: Visitors

to Hall Napa Valley are often lured by the soaring silver rabbit that leaps skyward at the winery’s entrance. Bunny Foo Foo, by Lawrence Argent, is just one of 35 important modern art pieces collected by proprietors Craig and Kathryn Hall who display

their eclectic collection throughout the property. Featuring expressive works by some of the most internationally acclaimed artists today, such as John Baldessari, Jim Campbell, Nick Cave, and Jaume Plensa, Hall Napa Valley surprises guests with artworks in unexpected and unusual locations. The tank room, for instance, is whimsically adorned with ‘Pinwheels,’ by Jim Drain and Ara Peterson. Hall’s Wine and Art Exploration experience is perfect for in-depth tour of the art collection on the property. 401 St. Helena Hwy. S., St. Helena

HESS COLLECTION: Donald Hess Experiences Hess displays a mere quarter of his eclectic art collection at Hess, where museum admission is free and open to the public. His world-class assemblage is an endeavor driven not by monetary investment or current trends but by personal choice. Hess develops close dialogues with artists to better understand the forces that drives them to create and he carefully limits his focus to 20 living artists whose work he faithfully supports long term. Hess has an uncanny ability to acquire works by lesser known artists who often go on to become well known and respected in their disciplines. Featured artists include Robert Motherwell, Francis Bacon, and Gerhard Richter. 4411 Redwood Road, Napa CLIFF LEDE: Since founding his namesake winery in 2002,

Cliff Lede has combined his estate vineyards, winemaking, art, architecture, and music to create one of Napa Valley’s most modern and diversified estates. Several permanent pieces are installed throughout the property, and its Backstage Tasting Lounge—the winery’s most exclusive tasting experience—features rotating museum-grade art exhibits, such as the current “Icons of Rock and Roll,” portraits of some of the 20th century’s most famous musicians: Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, The Beatles, and Keith Richards, as well as concert shots. 1473 Yountville Cross Rd, Yountville

VINEYARDS: The large tasting room at Markham Vineyards and its expansive wall space provide the perfect backdrop for its annually rotating exhibits of fine art and photography, and for occasional pop-up features. Currently on display are whimsical and colorful works by couple Peggy and Harold Francis. Former exhibits have included the popular Rolling Stone Covers by Baron Wolman, a photographic retrospective of rock ‘n’ roll’s biggest stars and events – several pieces of which have been retained in the gallery’s permanent collection. Gallery admission is free, and wine tasters are encouraged to sip as they survey the art. 2812 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY: Committed

to the artistic fusion of food, wine, great art, the late Margrit and Robert Mondavi were keen to give local artists a venue in which to show their works. The winery’s permanent art collection, found throughout the estate includes striking works by celebrated artists such as sculptor Beniamino Bufano. An original watercolor by Margrit – herself an accomplished artist – is displayed in her eponymously named Vineyard Room, in which an ongoing series of quarterly rotating exhibits is presented. Over the years, the winery has encouraged talented unknown artists and highlighted established ones such as Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, and Nathan Oliveira. The permanent collection and rotating exhibits can be viewed daily from 10am-5pm. 7801 St Helena Hwy, Oakville

MUMM NAPA: Guests at Mumm Napa are encouraged to browse the estate house’s two large art exhibition spaces with glass of bubbly in hand. The Main Gallery features an annual rotation of world-class, fine art photography, while the Private Collection Gallery, spotlights The Poetry of Light Collection - more than two dozen signed works by Ansel Adams. Mumm Napa believes that life’s best moments deserve to be celebrated, both with a glass of sparkling wine, and by capturing these moments on film. The Main and Private Collection Galleries are open during all wine tasting room and patio hours of operation. 8445 Silverado Trail, Napa

TURNBULL: Visitors to Turnbull are immediately immersed in the coveted photography collection of the winery’s proprietor (owner of one of the country’s largest private collections of Ansel Adams photographs.) The Turnbull gallery is located in the winery’s main tasting room and features a twice annual rotating collection of works by famed artists such as Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke White, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, Herb Ritts, Imogen Cunningham, and Adams. Historically, the space has displayed only black and white photography, though a recent first-ever color exhibit featured more than 60 pieces by Sonoma based world traveler and philanthropist Lisa Kristine. Look for more black and white, and likely more of Adams, in the near future. 8210 St Helena Hwy, Oakville ST. SUPÉRY ESTATE VINEYARDS & WINERY: San

Francisco’s Paul Thiebaud Gallery maintains the design and curation of St. Supéry Estate Vineyards’ rotating art gallery exhibition, currently showcasing the paintings of Los Angeles taught, yet east coast-centric, Stephen Coyle, whose series of bright, sun-filled beach scenes emanate from his observation of the “zoo-like” environment at the shore. The art gallery is available to the public daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. 8440 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

SILVERADO VINEYARDS:

Aficionados of historic European marketing lithographs love Silverado Vineyards’ “Belle Epoch” display of original posters collected by Diane Disney Miller and her husband Ron. Exceptional in both condition and range, the collection is considered the best publically available on the west coast. The Millers were also enamored with the “Hudson Valley School of Art” and collected landscape works by artists such as Thomas Hill and William Keith, both of whose paintings hang within the winery. Over the cellar doors hangs “Glimpses of Nymphs,” by Cappiello, originally intended for hanging behind the tasting room bar until its great size dictated its need for the larger, Silverado Room location. 6121 Silverado Trail, Napa

Donum Tasting Room

Donum Estate Winery  CONTRIBUTED BY LAURA LARSON, VIRTUAL VINES

U

pon entering the gates of the Donum Estate, it doesn’t take long to become captivated by this remarkable 200 acre respite tucked away on a side road in Carneros. At the crest of the long gravel driveway visitors are beckoned by “Sanna,” a 44’ high 2 ½ D Jaume Plensa cast sculpture of a giant head. Her massive size, juxtoposition, and peaceful expression represent the creative energy of the Estate and thought provoking experience that lies ahead.   The Donum property was founded in 2001 by veteran wine grape grower Anne Moller-Racke. Her mission was to produce outstanding pinot noir and chardonnay leveraging a Burgundian grand cru model. With grapes harvested from vineyards on the Carneros property and Russian River Valley, Donum, under the management of Moller- Racke and winemaking mastery of Dan Fishman, has acquired a reputation as one of California’s the top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers, consistently receiving some of the Industrys’ highest ratings.    In 2011, the property sold to a group of Danish Investors with majority shares currently owned by Allen Warburg. Warburg, an avid art collector, is a native European who lived half of his life in Asia. In 2008 on a visit to the property, looking out at the rolling acreage, wine glass in hand, he became inspired to bring sculptures onto the land and create a sanctuary where people 54

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

could feel the powerful combination of wine, art, and nature.   Donum Tasting experiences begin in the contemporary hospitality space which opened in Fall 2017. Floor to ceiling glass walls can be fully opened to offer guests stunning 360 degree views of the sprawling vineyards and cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay. Tasting selections usually include an Estate Chardonnay and several award winning pinot noirs produced from their Carneros, Russian River, Anderson Valley or Ten Acre vineyards. After an overview of the history and sampling of wines, guests select a favorite and begin a memorable walk around the property.    The vast sculpture collection (which will surpass thirty in 2018) punctuates the landscape with intentional sensory impressions— both intellectual and visceral. On the Estate’s highest elevation, Richard Hudson’s 24’ tall steel heart entitled “Love Me” is a beacon from any vantage point. With its mirrored sides, it’s intended to represent the creation of the Universe and eternity. It’s grand scale and sentry placement is breathtaking to behold from any angle. On the path below the “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads,” a pivotal work by controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, is well known for its relevance in Chinese History. The twelve bronze heads represent the Chinese Zodiac and are mounted encircled on tall posts, facing

one another. The work is a reinterpretation of the original, which was pillaged in the Opium War in the 19th Century. It is the most famous work of Chinese art for its representation of politics and art history. The Zodiac Heads bear significance for Donum as well. Ai Weiwei designed them into Donum’s current wine label design with each head representing a vintage.    A recent addition of a sculpture entitled “The Weight of Oneself” by artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset depicts a nude man carrying a likeness of himself. The facial expressions of both figures and and 9’ scale of the work solicits introspection from any observer.   Many other noteworthy artists embody the assemblage, and it continues to evolve at a fast pace. This year construction on an encasement in the vineyards for placement of Louise Bourgeois’ famous “Spider” is in the works and preparations are underway to add an Anselm Kiefer commission of a life sized airplane which will be postioned “landing” between two vineyards.   Donum is a Latin word meaning “a gift or donation.” Donum Estates’ sensory combination of elegant winemaking, thought provoking works of art and breathtaking beauty of nature are gifts to celebrate.   Due to modest production and intimate setting, tastings are available by appointment only.

t’s hard to find one or two words to describe the treasures that lie beyond the gates of The Terraces Winery, and even harder when you add Proprietors Timm and Sharon Crull into the mix. The 120-acre property and winery are built on a labor of love, determination, free spirit, and a devout appreciation for the sustenance of nature.    In 1993 Timm and Sharon left their lives and corporate careers in Berkley to follow their hearts to become stewards of the Rutherford vineyard property now known as the Terraces. The sloping vineyards produce about 30 acres of grapes, the best of which are used in a small production for their Estate wines. The acreage is also home to a variety fruit orchards consisting of persimmons, various citrus fruits and a menagerie of apples, some of which are harvested for their much anticipated hard cider label, which they plan to release in 2018.    In addition to producing wine and hard cider, the Crulls pet project lies in the enclave of their “Acetaia” or vinegar house, where they have been patiently aging Balsamic Vinegar in the Traditional Aceto Balsamico di Modena style. The process begins with the juice of grapes that has been boiled and reduced to must and then sent on a twenty-five-year natural fermentation and acidification process using a “batterie” of 6 small casks crafted in different types of woodAcacia, Oak, Chestnut, Ash, Mulberry, and Juniper. The variance can be quite dramatic as the vinegar makes its way through the process. The Crulls harvested

56

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

their first vintage of balsamic vinegar in 1994 and if all goes as planned, will produce their first bottling to wine club members sometime in 2019.   A visit to the Terraces incorporates Timm and Sharon’s’ vision to offer guests an unpretentious setting which allows them to connect with the land, meet the people who farm the crops, make the wine, and enjoy a behind the scenes experience in a casual, friendly way. The 4WDrive Tour and Tasting Experience, often hosted by Timm or Sharon themselves, transports guests from ATV through vineyards and orchards, working beehives, a mobile chicken coop, and a stop to check out the historic stone ghost winery built in 1885. The acetaia is open for balsamic vinegar tasting, and visitors are offered barrel samples of the concentrated syrup the “proper” way, which involves licking strategically placed droplets from the back of your hand.    The tour wraps with a sampling of five Terraces current vintages in a relaxed setting, either hanging around outside on their spacious deck or inside the property home. The Crulls share an appreciation for contemporary art, and some of the eclectic pieces they have collected from their many adventures can be found both in the tasting room and outside on the grounds.

The Terraces

The Terraces wines and hard ciders are released in limited production and tastings will vary based on current vintages. They are well known for their Zinfandels and Bordeaux varietals, Chenin Blanc, dry Reisling, and Tempranillo. Wine club members are welcomed as “supporting family” and enjoy complimentary tastings, exclusive access to limited wine releases, invitations to food and wine events and future allocations of hard cider and balsamic vinegar. Since the property is an operating farm, tours and tastings are available by appointment only.

Inspired by their “la dolce vita” years living in Italy, Dale and Marla discovered the spectacular fruit produced from the Italian hillside vineyards. When they came upon the opportunity to become stewards of this breathtaking canyon, they knew it was the perfect setting to grow grapes and raise a family. The 140-acre property has 40 acres of planted vineyards consisting of mixed Bordeaux varietals, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Sauvignon Blanc and small quantities of Chardonnay. The total case production is approximately 2000 cases.    It’s hard to reiterate the graceful beauty of Jericho Canyon, as its expansive views change based on the elevation where you are standing and which direction you are looking. The aspect of the hillsides have juxtapositions to the North, South, East and West, and the elevation from the base to the top of the property range from 200 to 1000 feet. Vineyards are planted on the lower floor and on the steep hillsides some of which are harvested by hand as tractors cannot access the slopes. From 1998- 2005 the Bleekers grew and sold their grapes to premium wineries like Rudd, Ramey and Chateau Montelena. Jericho Canyon Wines were introduced 58

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

in 2006, and the winery produces limited quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux blend a Bordeaux blend Rose’ and a Sauvignon Blanc. The operation is a family affair with Dale and Marla managing the farming and operations and their son Nick at the reins as winemaker. Nick’s wife Tara manages the sales and marketing of the wines. Michel Rolland was brought onto the team in 2010 as consulting enologist and winemaker.    If you are lucky enough to find time to visit Jericho Canyon, you are transported by ATV around some of the most spectacular vantage points in all of Napa Valley. Stunning views of the crisscross vineyards, towering views of Mt. St. Helena, the Palisades and the quiet beauty of the Jericho trees are images that will engage all of your senses and will be ones you will always remember. The tour finishes with a seated tasting in the rock caves with the winery’s current vintages. Jericho Canyon’s wines are elegant yet not pretentious and are a perfect finale to this truly memorable experience. Tastings and Tours are limited and available by appointment only for parties of 5 or less.

St. Clair Brown – Winery & Brewery 816 Vallejo St. Napa, CA www.stclairbrownwinery.com St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery brings a funky flair to the industrial neighborhood on Vallejo Street and Soscol crossing. The project is a partnership forged between wine industry veterans Elaine St. Clair and Laina Brown. Elaine has a long history as a Napa winemaker and is well known for her tenure producing sparkling wine for Domain Chandon and Domain Carneros. Her studies in fermentation at UC Davis fueled her passion for brewing beer and ultimately to her co-ownership of Napa Ale Works for over ten years. Laina was President at Black Stallion Winery when she and Elaine met through a wine consulting engagement. Over the years they developed a close friendship which grew into a

business partnership and the ultimate decision to go out on their own. Their complementary strengths in business management and winemaking laid the groundwork for the launch of St. Clair Brown Winery and Brewery in 2012. Their combined talents created an exciting new urban concept for the Napa Valley food and beverage scene which offers something for everyone.   Tasting Experiences at St. Clair Brown include both wine and beer and are hosted in a cozy greenhouse surrounded by outdoor gardens which produce the hops for the brewery as well as ingredients for their creatively paired small bites menu. Elaine produces the wines offered by the flight, glass or bottle from smallbatch varietals sourced from premium growers in Napa Valley. If the stars are aligned, you may catch her limited release Coombsville Estate Syrah which she harvests from her one-acre vineyard at her home in Coombsville. She may even be there to pour it herself. Almost all of the wines are produced with less than 200 cases per vintage.

Handcrafted beer is also offered for tasting or purchase by the flight, glass or bottle, and selections vary based on each 4-6 week batch cycle. Beer selections have included Honey Wheat Ales, Pilsners, Stouts, and even a Saison is brewed once a year. The production space across the street is equally divided and bonded separately for wine and beer. The brewery is classified as a “Pico,” and each batch is produced in two 60 gallon barrels. Some brews are very popular and extremely limited, so they are often reserved for their growing cadre of club members.    Along with the selection of boutique wines, beers, and inventive food menu, St. Clair Winery & Brewery also hosts a locals night on Thursdays, Speakeasy parties on Fridays and a monthly beer club. Its’ convenient downtown location is a favorite among locals and offers all visitors a refreshing and fun alternative in a destination most people know only for wine.   Seated Tastings can be reserved at the Greenhouse or Tastings & Tours of the Brewery are available on Friday and Saturday by appointment only. The Lipinski Stradivarius, built in 1715 has travelled across the world and been played by many gifted musicians. It was briefly hidden in an attic in Milwaukee following a robbery in 2014 and fortunately re -surfaced in only 10 days.   A local Napan, Saskia RJ Thiadens’ great- great grandfather, Engelbert Röntgen, who was the concert master of the Gewandhaus 60

in Leipzig, bought the violin in 1861 following the death of Lipinski and played the violin for 50 years. The Lipinski Stradivarius was inherited by Saskia’s great grandfather Julius Röntgen a composer and pianist, and the violin was played by his son Julius Röntgen Jr, her grandfather for 25 years until he sold it in 1922. Engelbert had many students and one of them was Amanda Maier a young Swedish violinist born in 1852. Engelbert quickly recognized her talent and allowed her to play the Stradivarius. Soon she fell in love with her teacher’s son Julius Röntgen Sr. They married in 1880 and had two sons who both became professional musicians.   Amanda Maier was a gifted composer, violinist and music historian and at the age of 16 she was the first female graduate

Frank Almond, Sasika RJ Thiadens, Joyce Yang

of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She composed a violin sonata, piano trio and violin concerto for orchestra and toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist. Amanda and her husband Julius settled in Amsterdam and hosted frequent soirees in their home, where guests included Brahms, Grieg and Rubenstein. Brahms greatly admired Amanda’s ability as a composer.    After having lost site of the family violin for many years, it was only last year that Saskia’s brother who lives in France discovered the “Lipinski Stradivarius” was being played by Frank Almond, international award winning violinist and the concert master of the Milwaukee Symphony. This December Saskia hosted Frank Almond and Joyce Yang a brilliant pianist, a concert at the Napa Methodist Church in Napa.

“It was very special to share the story of my musical family and hear the Lipinski Stradivarius live in Napa. The Stradivarius was magical and Amanda’s premiere of 4 Pieces for Piano and Violin and Sonata for Violin and Piano by Cesar Franck were stunning,” Saskia describes.   Frank had no idea that there were living family related to the Lipinski Stradivarius in the United States, and he was ecstatic to meet Saskia. Frank fell in love with Amanda Maier Röntgen’s compositions, which he has played at numerous chamber events & musical festivals. Saskia is dedicated to bringing Amanda’s compositions out of the dusty archives and help spread her beautiful music in the world. She is delighted that the Stradivarius is in such extraordinary talented hands of Frank Almond. BEST OF 2018

Ceramic Artist

MEL SIMPSON  # | BY JANNA WALDINGER

Mel Simpson

T

here was never any doubt about what I wanted to do” Mel Simpson, a Napa resident who recently retired from his position as the ceramics teacher at Vintage High School, explained as he passionately shared how, as a little boy he made the commitment to be an artist. Simpson, who was born in Canada, studied the whole gamut of fine art, anatomy, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics in his hometown of Nelson, British Columbia. His first art teacher, Santo Mignosa, an immigrant from Sicily, was traditionally 62

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

trained at the Academy of Art in Florence. He ignited the enthusiasm for ceramics that is alive today in Simpson.   Simpson explains that the Etruscan influence he learned from Mignosa continues to be evident in some of his work. “When I discovered ceramics, it was an epiphany. This is what I wanted to do!” Simpson’s eyes light up as he speaks of his dedication to his art.   Not satisfied with simply getting a diploma that would qualify him to do only his own artwork, Simpson transferred to Washington State University to

pursue a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. Subsequently, he started teaching and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Ceramics.   As a teacher, Simpson instilled in his students the importance of securing a graduate degree. This would qualify them to teach ceramics, provide them with a steady income, facilities to create their own work, and also enable them to make valuable professional connections.   During the early years of Simpson’s career, Art Fairs (that were popular then), enabled him to make a living creating

PLAN YOUR SPECIAL DAY IN NAPA VALLEY

vessels that were purchased by fair attendees. Over time, he also created sculptures and ceramic tile wall murals. “All of my work has an artistic edge to it. It’s not just pots thrown on a wheel and decorated,” Simpson was clear to point out.    In 1972 Simpson moved to St. Helena where he set up his studio. Then in 1988 he moved his studio to its current location on California Boulevard in Napa where he continues to create his ceramics. Simpson began teaching art and ceramics at Vintage High School in 1996, where he taught for 21 years, retiring just this past summer. Each year, for the past 10 years, Simpson’s ceramic students created large scale ceramic murals throughout the campus, drawing on the creativity of hundreds of his students.    “I am a ceramic artist who teaches, not a teacher who does ceramics! I bring all the years of experience as a professional artist, doing commissions, making sculptural pieces and mural making. I like to build things. My father was a contractor; my grandfather and my great grandfather were stonemasons. I feel like an alchemist, turning this mud into gold. The possibilities are endless with clay. It’s incredible what you can do with clay if you have the skill, the knowledge and experimentation. It’s always new. I equate the experience of opening the kiln to being a little boy on Christmas morning, wondering ‘what am I going to get?’ It’s always a surprise. The quest is to just keep doing more.” CALL MEL SIMPSON DIRECTLY AT: 707.363.7609 to arrange a studio visit.

Mix all these components and it’s understandable why vacationers get the bug to invest in the Aloha spirit.   Whether the plan is to unplug or partake in outdoor pursuits, the tropical paradise is teeming with options for lifestyle and accommodations. And if your pocketbook allows for a home away from home, two of the most burgeoning opportunities are rising from the volcanic ashes on the archipelago’s oldest and northernmost island of Kaua’i and the youngest, yet largest, Island of Hawaii.

Living on the Edge After a quarter century since Kaua’i was devastated by Hurricane Iniki, a key contributing factor for Kaua’i’s slower growth compared to its island neighbors during this time, The Garden Isle is experiencing a rapid increase in prosperity, with Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, leading the class of new property owners.   Operating in a somewhat different fiscal bubble, yet, leading the field in redefining luxury lifestyle on Kaua’i is Colorado-based Timbers Resorts. Since 1999, they have been a developer and operator of boutique hotels, residences clubs and resort communities located in some of the most sought-after destinations in the world, including The Orchard at Carneros in Napa and Mayacama in Sonoma County. Building on their global portfolio, Timbers has now made their second foray (after the Residences at Kapalua Bay) into Hawaii with the 450-acre Timbers Kaua’i.   Home base for this new Timbers’ family member is the same parcel of land once occupied by the Westin Kaua’i, adjacent Nawilliwili Bay and the Pacific. Fortunately, since the venture was approved prior to a 2014 Kauai County zoning ordinance requiring a 500-foot coastal setback, Timbers Kaua’i represents the last remaining opportunity for new development so close to the ocean’s edge on Kaua’i. Similar legislation also restricts any building on Kaua’i from being higher than a coconut tree.   Unobstructed viewing of Kauai’s natural splendors will be welcome news for homeowners at Timbers Resort – Ocean Club & Residences at Hokuala when the first residents start moving in June 2018. When the entire Timbers Kaua’i project is complete in 2021, a total of 47 residences consisting of a mix of fractional (starting in the mid-$300,000s) and luxury whole ownership residences (ranging from $2 million to $10 million for oceanfront townhomes and condos) will be surrounded by a retail shopping village, restaurants, destination spa, pools, 17 miles of community hiking and biking trails, plus a 180-room boutique hotel. Homeowners will also 66

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

have preferred tee times at the Ocean Course at Hokuala (formerly the Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons), a Jack Nicklaus Signature design featuring the longest continuous stretch of oceanfront golf in Hawaii.   “The reception we’ve already received from our current Timbers ownership has been nothing short of amazing,” said Greg Spencer, Timbers Resorts Chief Executive Officer. “Located in one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, Timbers Kaua‘i will introduce a new and unique residential project that currently does not exist in this fantastic market. We are excited to add another top notch luxury experience to the Timbers Resorts collection.”   During your trans pacific flight, if the anticipation of sipping that first Mai Tai is too much to bear, well you’re in luck. With the airport literally next door to Kaua’i Timbers, soon after touchdown, you’ll be transported from curbside to the property’s front gate quicker than you can pronounce “humuhumunukunukuapua’a” and holding a cocktail glass while horizon gazing from your private lanai!

Big Island, Big Dreams Going to Hawaii to spend time inside bowling or sitting in a movie theater wouldn’t exactly top the list of things to do. Unless, perhaps, you’re taking advantage of these activities with complimentary popcorn, soda, candies or ice cream at the 67,000-square-foot clubhouse at Kohanaiki, the first luxury development on the Island of Hawai’i in nearly a decade. And these entertaining endeavors occupy just a portion of the lower level at this two-story $12 million complex.    “This is the Taj Mahal of clubhouses,” says General Manager George Punoose, who is familiar with high-end frills having worked with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and private club developer Discovery Land before arriving at Kohanaiki in 2012, to oversee operations at the oceanfront utopia where the primary form of transportation for members is via electric golf cart.

No doubt most of the rides will steer toward the crowning centerpiece of this 450-acre gated residential community built on ancient black lava fields just a five-minute drive from the Kona airport. Unveiled in December 2016, it includes an indoor/outdoor fitness center, spa, yoga lawn, pool, a “speak-easy” cigar and scotch lounge, brewing facility, wine tasting room - highlighted with 50 years worth of Château Mouton Rothschild – plus members’ wine storage lockers and a Chop House and Sushi Bar Restaurant.    Holy coconuts, there’s more! The clubhouse overlooks a Rees Jones-designed 18-hole golf course complete with a trio of “golf hales” (a.k.a. comfort stations) located at three separate holes. While these don’t exactly encourage pace of play (a non-factor at Kohanaiki) these air-conditioned, 19th hole-on-steroids shelters are the place to hang out for indulging on an assortment drinks and snacks from candies to house-made beef jerky or a Hawaiian refresher from the frozen Mai Tai machine.    With an extensive lineup of things to do at the family-friendly Kohanaiki, chances are fairly slim of ever catching a case of island fever but, given that misfortune, the A-Team (Adventure Team) is on standby with a prescription of deep-sea fishing, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling or maybe a cruise on their 39-foot Yellow Fin boat to the secret spot for swimming with manta rays.   “It goes without saying we’ve got great amenities, ocean, fantastic golf course but ultimately, it’s the members and staff that make the biggest difference here,” says Punoose. “We offer a very non-pretentious, casual atmosphere and we make it like the Cheers’ bar where everybody knows your name.”    Would you like your name added to this elite roster consisting of celebrity members like former women’s World No. 1-ranked tennis player Lindsay Davenport, or actor Don Cheadle, along with CEOs and other high-powered executives? It’s as simple as plunking down anywhere from $3 million to $30 million to purchase one (or more) of the estate lots to build a custom home or choose from a variety of move-in ready residences.   At the end of the day and affordability aside, the decision becomes more about buying a membership than a home because if you’re not a fan of the amenities, the people, or the Hawaiian vibe at Kohanaiki, it’s a good bet you won’t be watching the sunrise or sunset from this exclusive neighborhood.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A SUCCESSFUL INVESTOR?  BY RICH JACOBSON

A

good friend and client came up to me recently at a dinner party and said: “If you had bought me one of the hot virtual currencies at the beginning of the week I’d be a millionaire right now!” My response was: “OK, you tell me when to sell so that you don’t lose your shirt”. We both laughed, but we were both really only half-joking.    Therein, lies the investing conundrum. To make money with individual investments you need to be right twice: once when you decide what to buy and, again, if and when to sell. Too many get one or both of these wrong, with the consequence that they end up “buying high and selling low”. That is why studies show the average investor significantly under-performs the market, as a whole.   Why is that the case? Well, it’s not because people aren’t smart enough to make the right decision. I’ve known many extremely smart people who have done some pretty dumb things with their money and some pretty unsophisticated individuals who made some pretty shrewd decisions around money. The real reason so many do poorly at investing is because of emotions and biases.   On the subject of emotions, I learned a long time ago that although we believe we’ve transcended our animal brain and are rational beings, in fact we are ruled by our emotions much more than we think (now there’s an oxymoron!) We routinely suffer from greed, envy, remorse, fear and worry. None of these emotions 68

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

are particularly helpful when it comes time to decide what to buy or when to sell. Even if we were particularly selfaware and disciplined, as investors we would still have to overcome the many biases that are known to affect human judgement- biases like Confirmation Bias, Anchoring Bias, Availability Bias, Outcome Bias, Groupthink and…the list goes on. With these additional challenges facing us as we try and make smart decisions with our money, it’s no wonder that so many investors end up underperforming the market.    Warren Buffett, undoubtedly one of the world’s most successful investors, is known to have famously counselled others not to follow his example of picking individual companies to invest in. Instead, Mr. Buffett has said that for most investors, the best decision would be to select lowcost index funds and not to try and time the market. In effect, Buffett is counselling individuals to strive to achieve “average” returns from investing instead of picking winners and losers in an often-futile attempt to hit a home run. Does that sound too boring and mediocre? Just know that following this strategy would probably allow you to surpass the majority of individual investors’ and professional mutual fund managers’ results. When it comes to your investments, it turns out, boring may be beautiful.

Inflammation: An often unseen and undiagnosed health risk  BY DR. ALEX DE MORAES

L

ets face it, it’s a rare occurrence that someone comes into a medical office and states that they are inflamed, indicate they have a specific illness or present a plan of treatment. If it were that easy everyone would be healthy and doctors would not be needed. A good annual examination can prevent the progression of many diseases, but listening and taking the time to help find a cause is also important. Time spent helping a patient find their health risks or aid in diagnosing a disease can help one live healthier and longer with less disease and less inflammation.    So what does one do to avoid being a victim of disease or inflammation? I recommend a conversation with your doctor. I know this seems simple but time spent with a patient understanding their history, daily habits, ALEX DE MORAES, MD family history, along with a good physical examination and some testing could help millions of people understand their risks. Additional time spent with your doctor discussing risks and collaborating on treatment options would certainly modify many lives and make for better health, especially as we age.   Let’s look at some common, but often under diagnosed diseases that if not controlled increase one’s health risk of heart disease, cancer, joint disease and speed up the aging process. All of the following increase your risks by increasing inflammation in your body.

GOUT: This is a disease of either overproduction or under excretion of uric acid. It builds up in the joints as crystals and causes damage of the cartilage. Over time it can lead to gouty arthritis and joint pain. 70

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

PSORIASIS: This is a skin disease that leads to irritation and inflammation of the skin mainly over the skin of the joints. Unfortunately, it is more than skin deep and leads to generalized inflammation that increases the risk of heart disease. Additionally about 20% of people with psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis. If caught early much of the damage can be avoided.

DIABETES: This is one of the most complex diseases I treat. If an individuals diabetes is well controlled then their general risks are slightly higher than the average person. But uncontrolled diabetes is one of the leading causes of heart disease. In addition it leads to peripheral vascular disease and kidney disease in many people. It is also one of the leading causes of vision loss in the USA. OBESITY: As your BMI (body mass index) increases above 35% so does your general risks of disease. Obesity is thought to cause generalized inflammation, which increases your risk of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and joint disease. Additionally it is one of the major causes of obstructive sleep apnea, which negatively impacts ones health.

ECZEMA: This is a different type of skin disease that can cause mild or severe irritation. Some forms of eczema are very difficult to treat or control. Uncontrolled eczema also impacts a person’s general well being.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (RA): A person who has RA needs to have a complete diagnosis and begin treatment as soon as possible. Treatment slows down the inflammation, which leads to joint destruction and deformity. Fortunately, new RA medications called DMARDS are life changers for this illness.

LUPUS: This is a very complex and complicated disease. It is a chameleon as it can present in many forms and is difficult to diagnose. Lupus can be mild, but can also be so severe that a person has difficulties functioning. If controlled a person can live a healthy and productive life. These are only a few of the many illnesses that negatively impact a person’s life. They can be difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat. The good news is that if physicians and patients take a team approach to care and collaborate on treatment options a person can live healthier and longer. I wish you all good health in the New Year. She informed Dr. Restivo that her teenage daughter was diagnosed with Linear Scleroderma at the age of 13 and for the past four years has been progressively self-conscious about her appearance. Dr. Restivo knew she could treat her with fillers, but also knew that it was not in the family’s budget and offered to do it at no cost. Compline Wine Bar/Restaurant/Merchant  BY DYNIE SANDERSON

There’s a new dining hot spot that has popped up recently on the wine and dine scene in Napa. This savvy wine bar is located in the heart of downtown in the courtyard of the old Gillwood’s location. Its innovative concept was designed and created by owners Master SommelierMatt Stamp and business partner Ryan Stetins. In addition to being a wine bar, Compline also offers a restaurant, wine retail shop and wine education classes. It is heralded by industry locals along with Napa Valley

chef’s and winemakers as one of the hottest new places to hang-out in trendy new Napa.   Matt Stamp is no stranger to wine and is recognized amongst his peers as one of the best in the industry. For the last 6 years, he served as Education Director for the Guild of Sommeliers. He has also worked as Sommelier for the French Laundry, The Farmhouse Inn and Restaurant and as GM of V. Mertz in Omaha, the first and only restaurant in the state to achieve a semi-finalist James Beard nomination for “Outstanding Wine Service.” He is regular contributor to Decanter Magazine and was included in Wine Enthusiasts 2013 “Top 40 Under 40” list. It’s no

wonder that members of the wine industry flock to his specialized wine education classes held at Compline.   Business partner Ryan Stetins also brings a wealth of wine knowledge and restaurant expertise to Compline and has been very instrumental in its development and success. Ryan worked with the late Charlie Trotter for nearly 6 years as his wine director at both the Chicago and Las Vegas locations. Upon returning to Napa in 2015, he was in the position of General Manager for Richard Reddington’s Redd Wood. He is also hands on with the educational classes and certainly knows his way around the kitchen.   The Wine Bar and Restaurant name Compline is derived from a Latin word used to indicate the completion of the working day. As Matt explains the naming of their establishment,” The hour of Compline is the monastic hour just before bedtime, when monks congregate to reflect on the day. In our way, the name of Compline is a tip of the hat to those monks that brought vines 72

up the California Coast from Mexico, and those who stewarded vineyards through the Middle Ages in Europe.”   Chef Yancy Windsperger is the master behind the menu at Compline. He draws from global inspiration by focuses on local products, developing a Napa cuisine that celebrated the bounty of our Valley with creative, honest, wine-friendly menu. His vast culinary experience spanned impressive stints at Morimoto, Spago, Jose Andres Bazaar and Napa’s La Taberna. His dishes are innovative and delicious. Starters such as Lamb Meatballs or

Cucumber Gazpacho or try their Bavette Steak or Half Duck.   Compline’s classes and inspired events are part of what stands them above the crowd. Most classes are offered during the day, though occasionally they host and evening educational events. Classes have offerings for both the wine professional who seeks to hone their knowledge base on wines and wine regions and classes geared to the wine enthusiast wanting to learn a bit more on the lay of the land such as their Gateway Napa Valley Class.

COME VISIT, pop in for a glass of wine, shop for a bottle to take along with you or indulge in their cuisine. There is something for everyone. Compline is located at 1300 First Street in Napa www.complinewine.com
