Dear Reader, It is really hard to believe that Spring is here! In Northern Michigan we still have many feet of snow and my garden is well buried! But that isn’t stopping me from dreaming of warm breezes, a muddy dirt road, and produce fresh from the garden. I think I’ll take advantage of the extra time to get a few more projects done indoors. I am feeling so inspired after putting this together! It is with heartfelt thanks to you, the contributors, and the sponsors. Just as I can barely image a yard with no snow, I can hardly believe my stars that I get to share this with you! What an adventure and a dream come true! Warmly,
Hea"er Anderson

There is something so irresistible about fresh flowers. Especially after a long, cold Michigan winter. Maria Marcusse understands and embraces this fully! What better way to chase away the winter blues then to fill your home with these beautiful sights and scents? I have noticed that when I have fresh flowers in my home it changes the way I feel. It really has the ability to make an ordinary day feel special. And finding the energy to tackle that Spring cleaning becomes no issue at all! Maria has recently opened an online shop which I am so excited about! She has a real knack for finding beautiful antiques. Her photos alone are like a treat in themselves. Sonia Crouse recently redid her dining room in all white. What better way to accent the fresh crisp look then with cheery Easter decor? Easter is a joy to decorate for because it doesn’t require a ton of work and changing around. Rather it is in the little details strewn simply here and there which add the most charm. Sonia is a master at creating Charming things. Least of all is her magazine which she publishes, called Creating Vintage Charm. If you aren’t familiar with this beautiful publication you can find out more about it at her website www.CreatingVintageCharm.com.
Sonia blew out and painted the eggs with lovely pastel colored acrylic paints. She then painted with a sponge brush and propped up on skewers to dry. For spotty eggs she slightly damped a long bristle brush with antique medium and flecked it unto the eggs.
To create the egg garland Sonia blew out the eggs, painted, and strung them on twine. She used glue to secure and space the eggs out. She then tied a long piece of burlap to one end of the twine. Then she twisted the burlap all along the edge of the twine and secured to the opposite end.

A FINN
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Yield: 3-‐4 servings
Place onions, mushrooms, olive oil and a pinch of salt in a medium 1/2 medium yellow or white onion, thinly bowl. Toss gently to evenly distribute the oil. sliced 4 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and caps sliced 2 teaspoons extra-‐virgin olive oil Pinch of sea salt, plus 1 teaspoon
Spread in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet and roast in the oven for 8-‐12 minutes or until onions have softened and darkened. Lower oven temperature to 350 degrees F.
8 large eggs
Whisk the eggs, artichoke hearts, ground mustard, arugula, salt, 1/2 cup canned artichoke hearts, drained, and pepper in a medium bowl. rinsed, and roughly chopped Place a cast iron skillet over medium heat with coconut oil and 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard heat until melted. Swirl oil around pan to coat the bottom and 1 cup lightly packed arugula or spinach, partways up the sides. stems removed 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter
Pour in eggs then gently drop in the mushrooms and onions, stirring slightly to evenly distribute. If you stir too vigorously at this point, the mushrooms and onion will discolor the frittata a greenish-‐gray color. Still tasty, but slightly unattractive. As the eggs cook, run a thin spatula around the edge to release it from the sides of the pan. Cook for 2-‐3 minutes until the edges have firmed up enough to lift as a group when you lift them with your spatula. Place the skillet in the oven and cook for 10 minutes or until the surface is lightly browned and no longer liquid. Best served slightly warm.

BOOK
One thing that may come close to my love for books is my love for journaling. I was so excited to figure out how to make my own out of salvaged books! I believe this style of book making is called coptic style though I’m not entirely sure, as I combined a few different methods I found. This is just the type of project I love.... making something useful from (almost) nothing! Don’t be intimidated! This is something that looks a lot more confusing then it is until you actually try it! Have fun book making, journaling, and dreaming!

CREATING A
perfect for you
Whether you are a beginning gardener, been doing it for years, or would just like to start with your first potted plant on your porch... there are many decisions to make!
it starts with dirt
Because most of us are limited in time and space it is important to first determine what is most important to you. Do you want to grow your own food? Or do you want beautiful flower gardens? Maybe you’re like me and would love a mix of both. The worst thing that can happen is to let the indecision hold you back. It is wise to plan ahead. But like so many things in life, you will learn the most just by jumping in and trying. With gardening there is so much to learn and I’m sure that part of it never ends. I am going to share a bit of the basics here for getting started, and also what has helped me develop my (ever evolving) gardening ‘style’. Even if you grow only food there is so much beauty to be found. I’ve discovered that I am the most motivated to be working in my gardens when there are a lot of interesting things going on at once. This might mean planning so you always have something near harvest, or that your flowers don’t bloom all at once and then stop. Or it might mean that you have interesting architecture and salvage pieces incorporated into your gardens so that even when they’re not in ‘full bloom’, you’ve got something pretty to look at.
If you are lucky enough to have access to a lot of natural elements do not discount using them! These big flat stones were picked from my parent’s beach and make the perfect stepping stone sidewalk for my cottage garden. By next summer the grass (and weeds) should finish filling in between them.
