The Potomack Company 1166 JOHN HANCOCK MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED AS GOVERNOR, 1790 Military appointment signed by John Hancock on November 29th 1790. Daniel Barlow is being appointed "Captain of a company in the Second Reg' first Brigade and fifth regiment of the militia of this Commonwealth comprising of the counties of Plimouth, Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes County, and Nantucket." Hancock signed underneath the Massachusetts paper seal, with his usual paraph present. The document is countersigned by John Avery, the first Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Torn in half along the vertical crease, with minor loss of text, including the 'A' in Avery. The lower right corner also loose, detaching the most of Avery's name. Minimal foxing and toning. Note on the rear of the appointment regarding the appointment, dated July 11, 1791. $600-800

1174 ALBERT SCHWEITZER HANDWRITTEN LETTER AND NOTE, 1956 the first item is a page long ALS in French by Schweitzer, dated 15 Octobre, 1956, written in Lambaréné, Gabon, with his stamp stating such. The second item is a typewritten letter from the treasurer of the hospital thanking the recipients for their donation, dated January 17th, 1956. Below is a three-line handwritten note in French by Schweitzer. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life," and used his hospital in Lambaréné in Gabon to demonstrate this philosophy (2) $150-250

The Potomack Company 1201 'LE RIRE' EIGHT BOUND VOLUMES 1898-1908 Eight Volumes of 'Le Rire' spanning the years 1898-1908. Seven volumes are bound in Ÿ or ½ leather or buckram with marbled boards. One volume is bound in brown buckram. General condition of seven volumes is Very Good with light to moderate rubbing to edges and boards and the pages of Le Rire filled with richly colored illustrations. The following lists the months contained in each volume: Dec 1897-Sept 1898; June 1898-Nov 1899 (front board and spine detached from textblock); Oct 1898-July 1899; Jan-Dec 1900 (two copies); Jan-Dec 1907; Jan-Dec 1908. . The binding of one of the two 1900 volumes 'Le Rire" is in poor condition with the front board partially detached and boards compromised. In this volume, the 1900 Le Rire's themselves are in Good to Very Good condition with micro chipping along right edge of many pages and some water damage to front and back of text block leaving the vast majority of the pages in Very Good condition. The other volume of 1900 Le Rire's is in Very Good condition. $2,400-3,000
