Matthew’s RACING CAREER 2014 Purchasing a 2007 Moore Hull in 2014 lead to an improvement in race results in the UK race series. Having gained experience in this boat, the end of 2014 saw it being returned to the builders in France where it underwent modifications. With these modifications and a new found confidence, Matthew set about the 2015 season which along with races in the British Series saw his first entry in the World Championships.

2015

The first outing in 2015 was Matthew’s home Grand Prix at Carr Mill in St Helens where he started his campaign by wwsetting a pole position lap which was 1.5 seconds faster than any other boat in the field and then followed that up with 3 straight heat victories to take the overall event with maximum points. Four weeks later the team travelled to Oulton Broads in Suffolk for the second round of the British Championship where despite a number of issues,

Matthew was able to secure a second place finish and in the process set the fastest lap time ever achieved on that course in an F2 boat. At this point and whilst holding a comfortable lead in the British Championship Matthew turned his attention to the up and coming World Series. The World Series proved to be a complete change to the British Series were he was now up against well funded teams

and the cream of the Formula 2 drivers from around the world with representatives from Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Lithuania, Russia, United Arab Emirates and the UK in attendance. The first event in Brindisi – Italy; involved a drive of some 1750 miles and saw the team experience a steep learning curve and a number of mechanical issues including broken propellers which, meant that Matthew was unable to qualify for the Grand Prix without first taking part in a repechage race. After a

“HE MANAGED TO RECORD THE FASTEST RUN OF THE WEEK”

short battle with other boats he won the repechage race meaning that he started the main Grand Prix in 17th place. The start of the race saw him make up places lap after lap and after putting what some commentators have described as the best drive they have ever seen in a F2 race he eventually finished the race on the podium in 3rd placeThe beginning of August saw another long drive; this time some 1250 miles to Tonsberg in Norway for the second round of the World Series. After a difficult qualifying session which saw yet more broken propellers, Matthew was able to qualify in 9th place. The start of the race saw him maintain his position and after settling into the Grand Prix he began what has become a trade mark charge through the feet finishing one step higher on the podium in 2nd place. The end of August brought a relatively short hop of only 900 miles to Campione d’ Italia for what turned out to be final event of the series. This time and again despite a number

of mechanical issues he managed to qualify in 5th place which, after a long hard race. Continued on the next page.

The World Series consisted of three rounds: Brindisi - Italy Tonsberg - Norway Campione d'Italia Switzerland

H

e had converted to a third podium finish in 3rd place being beaten only by Sweden’s Pierre Lundin (The eventual 2015 F2 World Champion) and Italy’s 3 times Formula 1 World Champion Alex Carella. Taken together the three podium positions resulted in Matthew finishing in 2nd place overall in the 2015 F2 World Championships. The end of the year saw Matthew chasing speed records at the annual Speed Records Week held on Coniston Lake; the home of the ill fated record attempt made by Donald Campbell in 1967. He managed to record the fastest run of the week achieving an overall speed of 137.90 mph the average of two runs which were recorded respectively at 138.20 mph and 137.60 mph for which he was awarded the K7 trophy donated in memory of Donald Campbell.

2016 A UIM Silver Medal in the F2 European Championship was the highlight of Matt’s season, although his podium places at Tonsberg and Campione were particularly impressive.

2017 Matt went into the 2017 season with his BaBa hull branded in a new colour scheme, which included EP Barrus, the UK Mercury Marine engine distributor who would be looking after his racing engine. The hull was officially launched at the London Boat Show in January. After competing in the UIM F2 World Championship Matthew stepped up to F1H2O and made his debut in Sharjah, UAE in late December.

With safety at the forefront of boat development, British designer and racer Chris Hodges set about improving the situation and constructed a safety cell that was produced from an immensely strong composite material. Instead of the cockpit being part of the main structure Hodges' capsule was separate and was fitted to the hulls and centre section. For the first time drivers were actually strapped into their seats. The idea was that if a boat was involved in an accident, the timber hulls could break up and absorb the impact forces while the driver remained well protected inside his cell. In the late 1990's further developments saw the introduction of an airbag in the cockpit that would inflate in a crash to ensure the capsule wouldn't sink before rescue crews could attend. Over the years boat construction has been developed and today few if any are built of timber, now replaced by modern composites. In 2016 nine teams and 18 drivers from 11

countries will compete at Grand Prix in Europe, the Middle East and Asia for the coveted World title, the prestigious number 1 plate will be carried by the defending two-time World Champion, Philippe Chiappe driving for CTIC China Team. POWERBOAT SPECIFICATIONS Hull material
