Investigation of fatal shooting to go before new grand jury By Laura McFarland

shared by Amelia, Goochland, Powhatan, and Prince Edward counties. Based on the evidence it hears, the grand jury will decide whether to indict anyone in relation to Burdick’s death. The commonwealth’s attorney’s office is “not ready at this point to present indictments because we are not convinced that what was done was justifiable or not,” Cerullo said. The multijurisdictional grand jury is an investigative body of seven to 11 citizens from the participating counties charged by the Supreme Court of Virginia to investigate and consider bills of indictment involving crimes originating in and between participating jurisdictions and throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, Cerullo said. He will be coordinating the grand jury as Powhatan’s special counsel and be the liaison between the grand jury and all the participating counties.

OWHATAN – The death investigation into a fatal shooting of a Powhatan man earlier this month will be one of the first cases to go before a new multijurisdictional grand jury next week to see if charges should be filed in the case. Dana Burdick, 35, was slain during a domestic incident involving several family members at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, at a business in the 3700 block of Anderson Highway, according to the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the shooting. Rob Cerullo, deputy commonwealth’s attorney in the Powhatan Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, said he plans to begin presenting the case on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to a new multijurisdictional grand jury

This grand jury is empowered to subpoena witnesses and documents, hear evidence, and determine the existence of probable cause for offenses including, but not limited to: gang offenses; all drug offenses; computer crimes; murder; abduction; embezzlement; extortion; identity theft and credit card fraud; gambling offenses; bribery; felony obstruction of justice, and felony cruelty to animals. “In a regular grand jury, it is not an investigative grand jury so all they can do is hear probable cause and make a determination as to whether to indict for a crime. Whereas a multijurisdictional grand jury can actually investigate, can call witnesses, can subpoena records, can be involved in the investigation and ask questions,” he said. One advantage of the special grand jury is that it can compel witnesses to speak, see GRAND JURY pg. 6

Lynne Doughtie was thinking about her 30 years of experience and what she could bring to the table in 2015 when she was named U.S. chairwoman and CEO of accounting giant KPMG. The Powhatan County resident didn’t realize then the importance of being the first woman to lead one of the Big Four accounting and professional services firms, overseeing more than 30,000 employees. As she traveled the country to visit KPMG offices, the response was always the same. She would be greeted by a receptionist, most always a woman, who would get up from her desk to hug her and say something to the effect, “I am so proud to work here with a woman CEO.” “It does make a difference; it matters a lot for women to see a woman in this role,” Doughtie, 54, said during a presentation at the University of Richmond on Thursday, Sept. 21. “I feel a sense of responsibility that every woman, every girl feels they can achieve whatever they want see CEO, pg. 4

O B I T UA R I E S CHARLES BALL Charles Lawrence “Charlie” Ball, 89, of Powhatan, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017. Although he had been in ill health for several years before his passing, his trademark flippant personality diminished very little. Even while incapacitated, his favorite response BALL to “how are you doing?” was a sarcastic chuckle an eye roll and “I’m breathing ain’t I?” Charlie will forever be remembered for the U.S. Navy, reading the paper, toothpicks, Lonesome Dove, and country music. He had an uncanny knack for assigning nicknames that came out with glue on both sides - they always stuck. Charlie was fluent in English and profanity, often lapsing fluidly between the two with little awareness or concern for his audience. Charlie was proud of his military career. He capably served for over twenty years in the U.S. Navy in the fire control room of several submarines before retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a veteran of the Korean War and enjoyed telling others about his many flirtations with the Russian subs during patrol. Charlie was of an era that produced honorable, if not emotional, men. He was rough and tough on the outside but never failed as a provider to his family or to those in need. He raised his children and countless stray animals with unconditional love. In the last years of his life, Charlie was provided tireless, loving care by his wife of 23 years, Joan “Tiger” Ball. He will be remembered fondly by his children and grandchildren as a model of generosity, humor and integrity. They will all be wishing this cowboy peace as he rides off into the sunset. The Ball family is eternally grateful to Charlie’s hospice team with At Home Care for their support. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Richmond Animal League. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 21 in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, VA 23002.

OWHATAN – Several state leaders, including Governor Terry McAuliffe, visited Deep Meadow Correctional Center in Powhatan County last week to talk about the DMV Connect program helping prisoners re-entering society. Before they can accept a job, gain housing or receive certain services, former offenders must provide a critical item – proper identification. To this end, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Department of Corrections (VADOC) have worked together to provide returning citizens with state identification cards when they leave prison. During the event attended by state leaders on Thursday, Sept. 21, DMV Connect was onsite processing ID card transactions for offenders to show how the program works. Also scheduled to attend the event were Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne, Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Victoria Cochran, Deputy Commissioner of the DMV George Bishop, Department of Corrections Director Harold Clarke, and Warden John Walrath. The VADOC/DMV partnership began several years ago at Deep Meadow. Since then, the DMV has

visited correctional facilities around the state to provide IDs to men and women who will soon re-enter their communities. DMV Connect has processed more than 23,000 ID cards for offenders at 82

in the last five years, and during the Sept. 21 event, DMV issued 26 more. Over the years, DMV Connect has expanded to provide identification cards, driver’s licenses, veteran ID cards, vehicle titles and registrations, compliance summaries, and more at locations that include: assisted living facilities, veterans care centers, colleges and universities, homeless shelters, government centers, specialty schools for hearing and visually impaired and autistic students, and Tangier Island. the historical texts omitted. We hope that Alice’s Ordinary People will inspire future generations to ‘take up the mantle and continue the fight.’ ” Tregay’s life story reflects the history of the movement. In her early fight against segregation, Tregay protested against the Willis Wagons, which were second class structures erected to relieve overcrowding in Chicago schools that served the African American community. Later, in 1966, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Chicago, Tregay and her husband marched with him. King was later joined by the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket. Operation Breadbasket fought racism, primarily working to ensure jobs for African Americans. During her work with

Powhatan County Public Library will present a special screening of Alice’s Ordinary People, a documentary film about a heroine of the civil rights movement, Alice Tregay, at 6 p. m. on Friday, Oct. 6. Filmmaker Craig Dudnick will introduce the film and discuss the circumstances in 1960s Chicago that led to Tregay’s involvement in the fight against racial discrimination and segregation. The film highlights her work with notable figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and President Barack Obama. In describing his work on the film, Dudnick states, “It was a pleasure to spend time with Alice and her colleagues, recording firsthand accounts of historical events – including some important items that

Jackson, Tregay and her “ordinary people” lobbied for change. Through a political education class she developed, she trained thousands of people to work in independent political campaigns over a four year period. This political force was instrumental in the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress, the election of Mayor Harold Washington, and ultimately, the election of Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States. This film is not rated. The special movie event is co-sponsored with the Powhatan NAACP, Powhatan Sheriff’s Office, and Friends of the Powhatan Library and will be held in the PCPL meeting room. class and knew what she wanted to do. She could relate to keeping financial accounts, recalling how in third grade she would help her mother post deposits and accounts receivables for the family business. “I loved being an auditor, especially in Richmond,” Doughtie said about her early years at KPMG. “It was the greatest learning experience.” She worked with banks, local and state governments and car dealerships. “I was not thinking about doing anything other than that,” she said. “I was laser-focused on being an auditor and an audit partner.” She hoped to become a partner in 1997. “I didn’t make partner that year; I was do disappointed,” she recalled. The economy wasn’t cooperating. Virginia banks in the late 1990s were being bought by their North Carolina brethren — and she

was losing clients. “There were so many other opportunities that I wasn’t thinking about. It took external factors that seemed devastating at the time. All my career decisions came at times when I felt the most comfortable, when I was at the top of my game.” She imparts this advice: “When you feel the least comfortable is when you grow the most.” When the door to the audit business shut, the door to the advisory business opened, she said. “It turned out to be a great experience,” and, as her confidence grew, she took on new roles and assignments. She became national managing partner of the advisory practice in 2005. She started traveling that year, since it was part of her new job. She has since worked from the firm’s New York City headquarters while maintaining her residence in Powhatan.

As vice chairwoman of KPMG’s advisory business from 2011 to 2015, she led the firm’s fastest-growing business. Her husband, Ben Doughtie, continues to be a huge supporter of her career, she said. “He holds down the fort.” When she was named chairwoman and CEO, he told her to go for it, she recalled, and not to worry since she couldn’t possibly work any harder. The latter proved not to be true. “I am traveling every week,” she said. “It is a hectic schedule.” The timing, however, was good, since her children had graduated from college — both engineers and both living in Richmond — and her husband had retired from the trucking business. Her sanctuary, she said, is being home in Powhatan with family on weekends. Doughtie grew up in Powhatan and graduated

Virginia State Police is warning all Virginians of an email scam that advises individuals they are receiving an “automated traffic ticket” from the state police. The Virginia State Police does not use or issue digital/automated traffic tickets or summonses. Anyone receiving such an email should delete it and NOT click on any links provided in the email. The email scam is just one of numerous tactics used by scammers to harass individuals under the guise of being the Virginia State Police. Just last month state police pushed out an advisory about its agency phone numbers being cloned by scammers demanding money and/or threatening individuals with arrest war-

rants. In these instances, anyone receiving such a phone call should hang up. To protect one’s self from such scams: Never open or click on a link in an email from an unknown email address, individual or organization. To check the validity of an email, locate the entity’s website and call to determine if it is a legitimate email. The same goes for an individual. Woman’s Club packs purses for hurricane victims

Cooks celebrate 60th anniversary

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO PHOTOS BY LAURA MCFARLAND

Allen and Carol Cook of Powhatan celebrated 60 years of marriage with a trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for several days in early September. They enjoyed Dollywood, many great shows, shopping and dining in many different restaurants. This was also the week for an antique car show, which was very interesting. The couple was married on Sept. 3, 1957, in Cumberland County. Allen and Carol have three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Cooks enjoy retirement, their friends, their grand children, their church and traveling.

The Woman’s Club of Powhatan participated in a special project called Pack a Purse, which was designed to help victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. The club asked its members to find purses in their homes and fill them with items such as hand sanitizer lotions, lip balm/ lipstick, a brush or comb or both, shampoo/conditioner, baby wipes, insect repellent, toothpaste/toothbrush, new/used Bible, sewing kit, reading glasses, note paper/pen, deodorant, gum, mints, gloves, socks, mini pads, and a change purse with a few coins. They were also asked to put a personal note to share their story of why they sent the purse. Members of the club are shown here with the purses that were brought to the group’s meeting on Sept. 20 at PCC.

Cadet earns Bronze Cross for Achievement

Powhatan High School senior Tyler Steinruck has been awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement, the highest award a cadet can receive in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). He was honored on Tuesday, Sept. 12 by the Powhatan County School Board. As the battalion commander for Powhatan County’s nationally ranked JROTC battalion, Cadet Steinruck was instrumental in the unit preparing for this year’s Junior Program Accreditation (JPA) during which the unit was recognized as the only one to receive a perfect score in 4th Brigade. Because of his leadership skills and technical capabilities, the program was able to achieve something that has never been done at Powhatan High School. He has demonstrated the phenomenal capability to perform exceptionally at any level assigned to him. Steinruck is the captain for the drill team, Raider Team and a member of the high school football team and track team. He truly meets the criteria of being a scholar, athlete and leader. Pictured are Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent; Steinruck; Lt. Col. Veronica Baker, and school board chairman Joe Walters.

Quoting in conversation easy as riding a bike By Laura McFarland News Editor

W

hen words escape you, it can be extremely helpful sometimes that someone, somewhere has already expressed how you were feeling with the right

words. When I was young, I used to think it was unique to my time to be in a situation and want to express something only to have a song lyric or movie quote pop up and encapsulate what I wanted to say. Of course, as I grew older and learned a little more about history, I realized how wrong I was in thinking my generation was doing something new with these quotes. The written word, cultural practices and the arts have been contributing to our everyday language for thousands of years, whether you are citing the Bible by telling someone they reap what they sow, paraphrasing William Shakespeare by saying they are living in “a fool’s paradise,” or quoting The Beatles when you say that “all you need is love.” Funnily enough, what brought this to mind was not a fascinating discussion on culture, history or language – it was a bike ride. I brought my bike out to the Powhatan Today office awhile back because, quite frankly, I wasn’t using it at home. I felt some of the neighborhoods around

the Village area would offer a safe place to ride with one of my co-workers on a sunny afternoon, and I was right. We have been out a few times, building up the duration of our rides slowly, as we did when we decided to go walking together in the Village area when we are both in the office and have the time. Now, both my co-worker and I are relatively novice bike riders, and we were both kind of nervous. For me, with very few exceptions, it has really been years since I had been riding. We are building up our confidence, but I think anyone with a modicum of experience of bike riding – or anyone simply listening in on our conversations – would be amused to hear us as we bumble through the small trials of relearning how to ride a bicycle. Topics have ranged from deciding to watch a Youtube video on how to know which gears to use, remembering which arm signals are correct for turns, and one very hilarious episode where we did our first semi-tight turns. Despite a few wobbles, we have not had any falls to date. Back to the beginning. On one of the rides, we discovered a slight downward slope that saw our bikes quickly picking up speed. Now, having not been on a roller coaster for a few years because of neck problems, this is as close to that feeling as I have been in way too long.

It’s not that we were going at top speed; it’s that simple feeling of freedom you get when the wind is rushing past you as your body hurtles forward in a semi-controlled way. Despite my earlier wobbliness, I couldn’t help but lift one of my arms and just enjoy the feeling. And then the quotes came. I am not a fan of “Titanic,” so I was not amused by the thought of shouting “I’m the king of the world.” Flashing to “Top Gun” and the “need for speed” was much more welcome. There was a song about flying somewhere in there as well, but that got pushed away by the need to peddle harder to make it up the short incline that followed the dip. On a side note, during the same ride, I actually found myself using a different quote when I wanted my friend to pull ahead and I said to “lead on, Macduff.” This turned out to be a source of re-education for me because I misquoted Shakespeare there. The actual phrase from the Scottish play is “Lay on, Macduff” and is urging a vigorous attack, which I didn’t intend in the least. Of course that led to an entirely too diverting bit of internet searching while I learned about other ways the bard is commonly misquoted, but that is just some geeky fun to save for another day. City proves statue issue merits dialogue

LET TERS TO THE EDITOR

By Jim Ridolphi

Presence of flags at parade disturbed some attendees

Contributing Columnist

Richmond and its surrounding counties were beginning to feel their oats during the mid-1950s, and the plight to suburbia was beginning in earnest as young families flocked to outlying areas to pursue their vision of the American dream. My family was no different when we moved to the outskirts near Staples Mill Road, and, slowly but surely, our trips in to the city became less frequent. As time passed, everything we needed was within a stone’s throw. We shopped at the A&P at Libbie and Patterson, and got home supplies at Spotless Hardware located a few doors down from High’s Ice Cream. We still made the trek downtown when we really needed something, or visited the Lowe’s Theatre for a movie premiere, but the majority of our life centered around our home in the suburbs. That was true for everything except medical care. The untold number of medical office buildings that now dot the landscape to Short Pump and beyond did not exist. As a child, going to the doctor or dentist meant a trip down Monument Avenue to Lee Medical Building situated directly adjacent to the famous statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The building seemed new and modern at the time, and, somehow, you felt like you were in a big city when you rode the elevator to your desired floor. To a child, the building was cool but the monument beside it offered much more intrigue. The general seemed near tears as years of decay had turned the once bronze statue into a blue green mess. Even in its uncared for state, the monument seemed bigger than life to a young child, and, although I knew little of the man on the horse at the time, he became an instant hero in my mind. I assume that a city that would name streets, buildings, schools after the man would have certainly done their homework. It was much later in life I learned of Southern heritage and history, a glorified past associated with moonlight and magnolias that still evoked memories of times gone by for many Southerners. Years later, the city cleaned the numerous statues and they were returned to their bronzed brilliance, and Gen. Lee seemed more dignified with

his recently cleaned attire and magnificent Traveler, cleaned and polished from hoof to mane. But, the clarity of the dedication and loyalty became less obvious to me. Somewhere along the line, I learned that respect for the man did not equate to an endorsement of the cause. Even later in life, I realized a symbol that evoked some sense of pride in many was offensive and obscene to other Americans. Years after I first visited Lee Medical Building, the statue is at the center of controversy, and last week protestors for and against the statue rallied at its base to exercise their first amendment rights. With the memory of Charlottesville fresh in our collective memory, many feared the worse when the opposing groups mingled. Thankfully, that was not the case, and Richmond maintained its reputation for peaceful protest in a forum where all views should be welcomed. The discussion regarding statues on Monument Avenue will continue, and who knows where the General and his loyal horse will eventually land. But, even the most dedicated Lee fans will attest it’s a discussion worth having and an issue that shouldn’t be evaded. Our nation does not have an immaculate past no country does, and we can’t correct or erase mistakes made by our forefathers. But, this weekend’s rally in Richmond proves that discussion can be civil, and protests needn’t rely on violence for effect. It’s hard for me to imagine a Monument Avenue without the symbols that represent its title, but, in recent months, I’ve realized the statues mean different things to different people. But, I doubt many who pass the monument daily view it as a celebration of past wrongs or a glorification of one race over another. At some point in our history, tens of thousands of Southerners chose to follow these men into battle, and most of them never owned a slave. I’d like to think the statue honors the men, not the cause. Others don’t see it that way, and I understand their sentiment. Most of us are open to compromise, and many more are ready to tackle more timely matters or address inequities that continue today rather than attempting to right a nation’s past wrongs. Last weekend’s rally underscores the fact we can have the conversation, and that’s an important message for a nation - and a credit to the city that hosted it.

Dear Editor, While I agree that the Labor Day Parade in Powhatan was peaceful and fun for many people and I acknowledge the hard work of the parade organizers, I do want to offer a differing opinion about the rosy picture painted of the parade by Laura McFarland. Laura, please know that I respect your thoughtful coverage of Powhatan events and I read every article you write. I, and many of my friends, were disturbed, hurt, and saddened by the number of children who waved and carried confederate flags. Many more such flags were seen (outside the ones carried in the parade by the Sons of Confederate Veterans) than were seen last year. I am also disturbed that not only is the little confederate flag still displayed at the monument by the courthouse, but that there is now a sign warning of snakes. It is the double meaning of the warning that disturbs me. Thirdly, I take exception to Justice for Norris being referred to as “the group known as Justice for Norris.” The article did not say that referring to any other group. Justice for Norris was founded as a necessary response to the injustice inflicted upon an Africa American Powhatan resident by the local justice system. Please rest assured that many residents of Powhatan, of all races and ethnicities, wish to peacefully coexist with their neighbors but do see the display of the confederate flag as an affront. This flag does not represent heritage to many of us; it represents enslavement, deprivation of life and liberty, and yes, hate. The sheriff or sheriff deputy who lives on my street displays a sign that states: Hate has no home here. Let’s all agree to that. Claudia Rankins Powhatan County

Holding the festival earlier in the month also meant some wineries couldn’t make it work with their schedules. Your voice matters in making the world better and in making your life better.” Diverse and inclusive cultures are key to any company’s future success, Doughtie said. “The most successful CEOs will have the most creative minds at the table trying to solve problems.” When asked by an attendee how she defines success, she paused — “that’s a tough one” — and quoted writer and humorist Mark Twain: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” “Success is finding your purpose and living it,” she said.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a unique approach to children’s Christian formation. The program is based on the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The primary belief is that God and the child have a unique relationship with one another and that the growth of this relationship should be assisted by the adult but is directed by the Spirit of God within the child. There will be a minimum of two trained catechists working together to assist the children as they explore and grow in their faith and knowledge of God’s love of them. Parents can leave their child at the church for this time. There is no cost for participating in the program at present. Parents are invited to provide snack and offer playtime after the pro-

She pointed out that the losses would have been higher, but the Woman’s Club had carried over surplus funds from the previous year and decided to use some of those to offset the losses. T

he start of the season has been a tough one for the Powhatan Indians football team. After dropping the first three games of the season, all games in which the Indians jumped out to early leads, the first win of the season was elusive for Powhatan. But, fueled by a stout performance from running back Jacob Taylor, the Indians got the first tally in the win column of 2017 after a 24-14 win on the road against Western Albemarle on Sept. 22. Taylor carried the ball 29 times for 126 yards and had rushing touchdowns, each from the doorstep of the end zone. Powhatan jumped out to a 14-0 lead over the Warriors before Western scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to make it a 17-14 game as the Indians added a field goal in the quarter. But, in the fourth, quarterback Noah Dowdy ran the ball in from two-yards out to lift the Indians to what would be a safe 10-point lead. A week after throwing four interceptions to the Collegiate defense, Western Albemarle quarterback Derek Domecq threw four more against Powhatan’s defense. The biggest one was in the fourth quarter as Colby Cheatham grabbed the game-sealing pick to send the Indians home victorious. The win brings Powhatan coach Jim Woodson into a

tie for the most wins by a Richmond-area head football coach with Roger Brooks of King William and Henrico with 273 wins in his career. Powhatan will take the field on Sept. 29 at home against Charlottesville at 7:30 p.m. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s football team also picked up a win on Sept. 22 in a 56-14 rout of Kenston Forest. Colby Johnson led the Knights with 14 carries for 212 yards and three scores. Dion Butler had 91 rushing yards and two touchdowns as well as an interception return for a score. Chris Gupton also had an interception returned for a touchdown for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. The Knights improved their record to 2-2 on the season and will take on Brunswick Academy at home on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

GOLF Powhatan’s golf team took to the links on Sept. 18 in the Jefferson District tournament at Glenmore Country Club. The Indians finished seventh out of eight teams in the district with a combined score of 376. Powhatan gapped Orange by 16 strokes and were short of Fluvanna by eight strokes. Connor Voorhees led the Indians squad with an 88 on the day. His split was 47 followed by an impressive 41.

Following a missed chance in the 34th minute when she was on a breakaway and was denied, she put one in the back of the net after a scrum in front of the net to make it 3-0 Indians. Knights resulted in a very one-way set and gave Powhatan a two set lead. The last set started off in Charlottesville’s favor, giving them the first lead of the game for the first three points. Thanks to points by Sierra Ellison and Henderson, the slim Charlottesville lead was quickly eliminated. But, the Black Knights kept pace and didn’t allow the Indians to get too far out ahead. A four point run, starting with a kill by Nee, an ace from Hannah Worsham and two errors by Charlottesville was the biggest run of the set for the Indians. That run set up the end of the set without much resistance from the Black Knights and completed the sweep with a 25-17 final. “That last set was a little iffy,” Foos said. “We had some substitutions and were running a different lineup. For the

Madison Herring was second with a 92, with a split of 44 and 48. Berke Wrenn was third with a 96, followed by Kory Brown with a 100. Wrenn had a split of 50 and 46, while Brown’s split was 41 followed by a 59. The Indians competed in the Region B golf tournament on Sept. 25 and 26.

SOCCER Earlier this month, the Powhatan Fury travel soccer teams competed in the Virginia Cup and brought home four division championships. In the U11 Samba Division, the Fury went 2-0-1 over the three games to win the division. In the finals, the U11 team defeated RSK Chesterfield 5-4. In the U12 Predator Division, Powhatan’s team was a perfect 4-0 to take home the trophy. Powhatan’s Fury 99 men’s U19 team won their Predator Division after an undefeated performance. The Fury 99 posted a clean sheet, scoring five goals and allowing none. On the girls side, the Powhatan Fury 01G team won the U17 Predator Division with an undefeated tournament record. The Fury 01G scored four goals in bracket play and two more in the final win over New River Valley United, while allowing none into their net.

defense, but Taylor was on the spot again in the 47th minute to complete her hat trick and make it a 4-0 game. “It was all Hanna (Hathaway), Calie, Kayla, Dani,” Taylor said. “They were all the main part of that. I just had to get it in, but they got it to me.” Taylor’s prolific scoring ability this season has shown that she plans to follow in the steps of last year’s scorers in Hannah Adams and Brie Burgio. “I think the midfield-

ers have really helped,” Taylor said. “While we might have lost a lot of those scorers, the midfielders have really done a good job and helped the rest of us be in the right spot.” Powhatan played at home against Trinity Episcopal on Sept. 25, followed by a road game against Louisa on Sept. 26. The Indians will finish out the week at home again on Sept. 28 against Monacan.

most part, they played well and they are communicating more. We have a lot of movement on the front line. They are progressively getting better.” Powhatan’s Nee finished with 22 assists and three aces for the Indians, while Ellison had 14 digs and six kills. On Sept. 19, the Indians went to Western Albemarle and took down the Warriors in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 final. Nee had 27 assists and three blocks that game, along with 10 digs and four kills from Lauren Llewellyn. Ellison had 15 digs and 10 kills. The way the schedule has worked out for Powhatan thus far has turned into a benefit for the team, according to Foos. “Having the hard opponent then the easy one is helping,” she said. “It lets us fine tune and make ourselves ready for the higher level game, which is what we did this past week with us taking down Western Albemarle, which was a big win

for us.” This season has flipped the script from a season ago. Instead of the target on their backs by teams like the Hawks and Trojans, the Indians are the ones placing targets this year. “We’ve got some targets on people’s backs,” Foos said. “When the time is right, we’re going to bring it against some of these more competitive teams.” Foos said that the mindset is certainly different when the Indians are the underdog one season after being the alpha dog. “It’s weird,” she said. “Last year, we had a huge target on our back. That was the drive that Midlo had. We beat them in three last year and they came back and they won the conference because of it. I was trying to explain (to the team), people think that we’re the underdogs right now. But, we did show them that once the timing is right in regionals, we’re going to get them.”

fter their game on Sept. 21 at Powhatan High School, Indians head coach Steph Brooks gathered her team together on the sideline.. Then, Brooks announced that there was some history to go along with the show that the team had just put on.

Brooks noted that the four goals that Powhatan scored against Charlottesville was the highest goal tally that the team had ever put up against the Black Knights. After earning corner after corner, the Indians scored four goals, three of which came off the stick of Ella Thomas, in a 4-0 Jefferson District win over Charlottesville. “I think we played really well,” Taylor said. “We really stepped up, especially

after halftime when we needed to.” The goal onslaught started early, just four minutes into the match. Danielle Bigham put the first shot on net during the first corner of the game, which was saved by the Charlottesville goalie. Later in that sequence, the ball got to Kayla Hathaway, who dished it back to Bigham, who sent it over to Thomas and into the net for the first goal of the game. Just three minutes later, after a shot on

net from Calie Rehme, Kayla Hathaway put a shot in the top corner of the net off a corner and it was 2-0 Indians in the blink of an eye. In the first half alone, the Indians earned nine corner chances. On the other end of the field, the Black Knights rarely came within any threat of scoring on Gatlin Snyder and the stout Powhatan defense. see INDIANS, pg. 2B

The Powhatan Indians girls volleyball team took to the court on Sept. 21 and did what they needed to do against Charlottesville. Led by 11 kills by Jordan Davis, the Indians took care of business in a 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 sweep over the Black Knights. “I think we did pretty well tonight,” coach Amber Foos said. “We played clean. We were focused. That’s our goal. It’s hard for them to be focused against a PHOTO BY BILLY FELLIN less competitive team, but for the most Powhatan’s Sierra Ellison (5) goes up for the block against Charlottesville part they have done that.” The Indians went on two separate 5-0 on Sept. 21. runs to open the first set. Abby Nee, Davis, Katie Henderson and Rachel Mueller all made plays on the Black Knights in the first set to keep them at bay. The closest that the Black Knights got to the Indians was at the 5-1 point and wouldn’t get any closer than seven points to the Powhatan lead the rest of the set. The second set started with more of the same for the Indians as Nee began the set on an aces spree, giving her team a nice cushion to get the set off to a good start. Lady Blackhawks expand Blackhawk Gym oerings By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Powhatan’s Blackhawk Gym has long been associated with excellence in wrestling and giving athletes a chance to work hard and learn valuable skills and life lessons in the process. Recently, the gym became associated with another sport that is brand new to the gym’s sports offerings, but a sport that is not unfamiliar at all with the county’s sporting history. The Lady Blackhawks softball team has arrived. Erica FitzSimmons said that they were involved with Virginia Breeze, another softball travel team, and had been discussing how to get involved with a different organization in order to have the opportunity for sponsorships. FitzSimmons’husband, Rich, who is now the president of Blackhawk Gym and was heavily involved with the gym with the late Michael Walter, connected the dots of softball and the gym. “After everything happened with Mike, we were sitting around talking about softball, she said. “In the back of my mind, I was thinking how nice it would be to be a part of Blackhawk. It gives us the avenue into the 501c3, they have a great organization already, their mission is similar to what Caryn (Rehme) and I stand for. But, I didn’t want to push it with everything

going on. And, we’re sitting there on the back porch having a discussion, and he says ‘why don’t you just become Lady Blackhawks?’ FitzSimmons said that prior to Walter’s passing, he and Rich had been discussing ideas for female sports opportunities through Blackhawk, whether it was softball, soccer or some other sport or training venture. “It just happened to fall into place and now we’re off and running, FitzSimmons said. “I think Powhatan is a great avenue for softball, Rehme said. “Powhatan softball is what it is. It couldn’t have been a better fit. I think Mike would have taken heart (to the team.) FitzSimmons said that anyone can start an organization for softball, but being associated with Blackhawk is what makes this team unique and special. “To be a part of an organization that cares so much for the kids and has such an amazing mission statement, it was the perfect fit, she said. “It was a great fit. Currently, a U12 Lady

Blackhawks softball team exists and has played in two tournaments thus far. While the coaches said that the first tournament wasn’t that successful, going 1-2, one in Richmond on Sept. 24 was and resulted in the team winning the championship. “With the improvement from last year to this year, I think we’re going to have a very good season, FitzSimmons said. But, for the most part, FitzSimmons said that they’re going to take development of the program slowly. Part of that development is the seeking of donations for upgrades, such as a fence or dirt for a future field. “Obviously, the facility can’t hold a number of girls for a softball team, she said. “We don’t have an indoor facility or a field. We’re looking to enclose the basketball area and make that pitching lane. The U12 team will go for a season and see how things go, FitzSimmons said, but she’s already hearing about interest in a U10 and a U14 team as well. “Ultimately, I would

love to see a field, she said. “If the sky is the limit, let’s have two U12 teams. Let’s have two U14 teams, two U10 teams. That’s the ultimate goal, but we’re taking it slow right now. That’s how Blackhawk started, too. The coaching interest

from FitzSimmons and Rehme in addition to the softball heritage of the county made that sport an almost obvious selection for the expansion. “I played softball my whole life and Caryn has coached it, FitzSimmons said. “We’ve both been close to Blackhawk, both

of our boys wrestled there. It was a perfect fit. “We were utilizing the facility in the winter for conditioning for the girls and we started thinking that this can happen, Rehme said. “We can teach these girls character value and leadership.
