irginia has already experienced summer-like heat with near record breaking temperatures in the upper 90s. Even though summer has not officially arrived, it is easy to forget the summer heat can be dangerous or even deadly. Heat injuries can range from the very mild to the life threatening. The range of heat injuries include heat cramps and heat exhaustion which are non-life threatening to heat stroke which is potentially fatal if immediate medical treatment is not started. Heat related deaths are more common than most people realize. It is estimated that approximately 200-300 people die each year in the United States from heat stroke and as many as 1500 per year during heat waves. Several thousand are treated for heat cramps and heat exhaustion annually. Many people ignore the early signs of heat stress such as thirst and profuse sweating or they are engaged in activities that take their mind off the warning signs. We primarily cool our bodies through sweating and evaporative heat loss however in extreme heat

and humidity, this mechanism fails to protect us. Anyone, at any age, can suffer the effects of extreme heat. Those with preexisting health problems, the very young and the elderly are at greater risk from overheating. Certain medications can interfere with the body’s ability to maintain a normal temperature. Antihistamines for example can cause decrease sweating which is vital for evaporative heat loss from the body. Thyroid hormone, Amphetamines and tricyclic antidepressants such at Elavil or Amitriptyline can cause increase heat production and increase the risk of heat injury. Taking certain precautions and following simple guidelines can prevent heat injuries especially during periods of extended summer heat. see Heat page 5A

Belmead-on-the-James, one of Powhatan County’s little-known treasures, has been named to the nation’s most endangered historic places list. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the non-profit leader in historic preservation, announced last week that the cultural, religious and educational institution is at risk of destruction and may sustain irreparable damage if it is not saved. The announcement drew more than 100 people to Belmead including members of the Bell, Harris and Morris families - who have direct connections to the site - as well as volunteers, board members and preservationists, who gathered on a beautiful, late spring morning to witness the reclamation of the ‘Holy Hill’, while the Vaughan Gospel Choir sang in the background. “Wherever two or three are gathered God’s spirit is here,” said Sister Maureen Carroll, Executive Director of St. Francis/St.Emma Inc., stewards of Belmead, “unless the Lord builds a house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord rebuilds the house, we labor in vain who build it.” The property is steeped in history that the nation needs to learn about and understand its unique challenges and opportunities. Located among rolling pastures and wooded knolls along two miles on the winding banks of the James River, the antebellum mansion – a critically important landmark of African American heritage - sits atop a grassy hill surrounded by a 2,000-acre rural landscape. The Gothic Revival mansion was designed by renowned American architect Alexander Jackson Davis and is considered an architectural masterpiece. “This place is distinguished by its rich layers of history,” said Robert Nieweg, Director of the Southern Field Office, National Trust for see Belmead page 3A

Heat: Knowing the signs of heat stroke can help save a life Continued from page 1A

Heat Cramps are painful muscle spasms that usually affect the abdominal and leg muscles. These cramps frequently occur in unconditioned or non-acclimated individuals who experience profuse sweating during several hours of sustained work effort and have ingested large volumes of water. Heat acclimated individuals are less likely to experience heat cramps. These are not life threatening and usually respond to electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade and moving to a cooler environment. Heat Exhaustion tends to develop over several days but can develop during intense short-term exertion in a hot environment. The signs of heat exhaustion include paleness, weakness, malaise, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and a moderately increased temperature (101-102 degrees F). The most important distinguishing factor between heat exhaustion and heat stroke is that the person remains alert and oriented to his or her surroundings. There is no confusion, disorientation, or coma with heat exhaustion like in heat stroke. Rest and water may help in mild heat exhaustion, and ice packs and a cool environment (with a fan blowing on the individual) may also help. Individuals suffering from more severe heat exhaustion may need treatment at a hospital.

suffering from heat stroke. All of us are at potential risk of heat stroke and death when exposed to extreme heat and humidity or when our cooling mechanisms fail. It is important to understand that the very young, elderly, and individuals with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart trouble, and obesity are at increase risk for heat illnesses. Very few of us drink enough water and by the time you feel thirsty, you are already two percent dehydrated and at increase risk for a heat illness. A person should drink enough sports drinks and water to produce clear urine. A general guideline recommends six to eight quarts of water per day for persons engaged in strenuous activities during periods of sustained heat. If however you have chronic heart, kidney, or lung problems, you should consult your doctor before drinking large volumes of water or electrolyte drinks. It is also important to avoid alcohol and caffeine as both of these drinks contribute to dehydration. Again, if your urine in dark yellow or has a strong odor, you may already be dehydrated and at risk for heat injury. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and be watchful of infants and the elderly who are most at risk during the summer season.

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness and is a true life-threatening medical emergency. It can develop rapidly even in people who are not exercising or exerting themselves, if the weather is hot enough. Heat stroke occurs when there is a total breakdown in the body’s temperature regulation system. When this occurs, the body’s temperature can increase to 106º F or higher and cause damage to the brain, kidneys, heart, liver and other organs. With heat stroke, the body’s cooling mechanisms fail and are unable to compensate for the overwhelming heat stress leading to a significant increase in the body’s core temperature. Many of the symptoms of heat stroke are similar to heat exhaustion and include headache, dizziness, vomiting, and weakness however the most striking symptoms include confusion and disorientation. The brain is very sensitive to heat stress. As a result, a person suffering from heat stroke will likely have confusion, agitation, coma, seizures or even death. Death from heat stroke can occur in 1070 per cent of victims. Treatment of heat stroke involves understanding this is a life threatening condition. Someone should immediately call 911, as the heat stroke victim needs immediate medical care in a hospital. The victim should be moved to a cooler location and clothing removed. To help with cooling, you may place ice packs in the groin and under the arms. Do not give the person any medications, salt tablets, caffeine or alcoholic beverages. There is the “Golden Hour” with regards to treating heat stroke. The goal is to reduce the victim’s core temperature to 100° F within the first hour. The longer it takes to cool the individual; the greater the risk of serious organ injury or death. Prevention is the key to reducing death and

Powhatan’s Belmead made headlines last week when it was named to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of most endangered historic places. Belmead deserving of national notice One of Powhatan’s best-kept secrets was thrust into the national spotlight in a big way last week, when it was revealed that the county’s very own Belmead has been named to the By Roslyn Ryan National Trust for Historic PreservaEditor tion’s list of most You may reach Roslyn at editor@powhatantoday.com endangered historic places. The news that Belmead has been recognized in this way is a mixed blessing, certainly. After all, it’s kind of like someone telling you you’ve been moved to the top of the heart transplant

waiting list. Great news, to be sure, but it’s still not a roll most of us would want our names on to begin with. That said, the official recognition the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament received last week could not have come at a better time. Upon visiting the property, with its heroic back-story and fearless caretakers –despite a building that has been, at times, literally crumbling around them, the sisters of Belmead have continued to fight for its survival—it’s hard to think of a place that deserves it more.

Noechel, who initially thought she would be a professional musician, instead followed her heart into the teaching profession, were she has been for nearly 25 years. It’s easy to see that she loves her work— challenging as it may be sometimes working with budding musicians—and also that she has *** achieved a measure of success that has nothing to do with accolades or financial gain. There are plenty of notable quotes about The staff of Powhatan Today would like to success (if you don’t believe me, just Google congratulate Noechel on her award and wish all it), but perhaps one of my favorites is attributed the recent graduates of Powhatan, particularly to the British journalist and television personal- those wondering what their next step will be, ity David Frost: “Don’t aim for success if you her kind of success.

What it means The worst $35 I ever spent to be a father HUMOR

I

bought a picture of a turtle for $35. It was the worst $35 I ever spent. Then I bought a picture of meat for $35. It ranks up there with the picture of a turtle as the worst $35 I ever spent. Then I bought a picture of a dog at a Chinese zoo nursing two abandoned baby ligers, which are the offspring of a lion-tiger rendezvous, for $35. I thought this one was a good deal. My boss, on the other hand, did not. He was concerned that the total bill for pictures of things like turtles and meat and lions and tigers – oh my – was nearly $500. For a small-town newspaper editor, $500 is a bigtime chunk of change. Here’s how I got into trouble: I was editing a story about upcoming programs at the state park, something I assume the executive editor of The New York Times does regularly. I had an inner monologue going. “Looks like they’re having a program on turtles. I wonder what would bring this story to life on the page?” I thought and thought. Then it hit me. “A picture of a turtle!” At The New York Times, the executive editor could tell the managing editor to tell the assignment editor to tell the photo editor to tell a photographer to fly to the Galapagos Islands and bring back a Pulitzer Prizewinning picture of a turtle. At my newspaper, I could holler over at Mike, “When whoever has the camera with the duct tape on it gets back, run down to the creek behind the old trade lot and see if you can

get a picture of a turtle.” Or I could download it from the service to which we pay a flat fee – not per photo - to provide us with pictures from all over the world, whether they are of turtles, meat, ligers, dictators or shirtless Anthony Weiners. Since Mike wasn’t there at the moment, I downloaded a picture of a turtle, which I know readers appreciated. “I like the state park story,” I imagine many said as they sipped their morning coffee, “but the addition of the turtle picture was a stroke of journalistic genius. Bravo!” A few weeks later, my boss, a kind man who understands that mistakes happen and values my years of service at the newspaper, wanted to know why I purchased a picture of a turtle for $35 and if I had lost my freakin’ mind. I stammered that it must be a mistake. “Somehow,” I told the newsroom, “I paid $35 for a picture of a turtle.” Sports Editor Marty Queen put it in perspective. “You could buy 10 actual turtles for $35,” he said. It got worse. In rolled a $35 bill for the aforementioned meat photo I had

used to spice up a story about grilling. I could have had quite a cookout for the money I spent on a picture of meat. After the feast, we could have all stood around and admired my picture of a turtle. “I think it truly captures the wistfulness that is the essence of a turtle.” As the total grew, I made frantic phone calls to the service that provides us with photos of turtles, meat, ligers, dictators and shirtless Anthony Weiners and got a never-ending series of recorded messages about buttons to push, none of which addressed my turtle problem. An e-mail to the right person, though, prompted an investigation revealing a technical glitch - and perhaps some user error was to blame. The extra charges were erased. My career, such as it is, was not destroyed by a picture of a turtle. Next time, I am sending Mike to the creek. The thought of fatherhood was terrifying. I vividly remember the day my wife informed me that we were going to be parents. We had been married for a little more than a year. Heck, I was just getting used to being married, now my life was going to be turned upsidedown. No more golf. No more fly fishing. No more sports. Life as I had known it for the past 31 years was never going to be the same again. Little did I know at the time just how profound that statement would prove to be. My daughter was born Nov. 22, 1988 at 10:10 a. m. It was a typical rainy day in the little town where we lived on the Oregon coast. I remember carrying her from the delivery room into the nursery at the hospital. All the babies looked so small. I asked the nurse if these babies were preemies? The nurse indicated that they were all mostly average. Kayla weighed 11 pounds, eight and one-half ounces. My wife and I had a Giant Baby! On that day my life changed forever. Having earned a degree in education, I knew that her first six years would be the most formidable, and would set the stage for the person she would grow to become. My goal was to teach her about life, but I ended up being the student. Seeing the world through her eyes and answering her many

complex and innocent questions, along with watching her learn changed my perception of the world. There were so many things that I had taken for granted that took on new meaning. Precious memories, like holding her hand when crossing the street, riding bicycles and pushing her on a swing at a local playground are all held dear. While teaching her about accountability and responsibility, I learned. Watching her play softball, from little league to the varsity team in high school are great memories I will never forget. I have experienced her successes and her challenges. She is now a young woman. She has a career and a boyfriend. Her wedding, someday, will be the next big milestone, and then after that a family of her own. Looking back on it, life as I knew it did change. While I still played golf, went fishing and was involved in sports, on Nov. 22, 1988, that Giant Baby changed my life for the better. As I look back on Father’s Day 2011, my responsibilities as a father have changed. With the passing of my wife, my role as a parent took on a new dimension, one I that accepted and embraced. Being a father means being a teacher, a mentor, a coach and a protector. It means being accountable and responsible. It means being a role model. It means being selfless, humble and a friend. It is the most important job any man can ever have.

PISCES Feb 19/Mar 20

Capricorn, you have been pondering an important decision for some time now. It’s finally time to take the plunge. Don’t worry: The results will be well worth the effort.

Reminiscing about old times can bring a smile to your face, Aquarius. But unless you are going to revisit the past, it won’t do much to dwell on what might have been.

Take a few moments to make a priority list, Pisces. Because with so much time on your hands, you’ll have opportunity to do things.

ARIES Mar 21/Apr 20

TAURUS Apr 21/May 21

GEMINI May 22/Jun 21

Aries, a romantic match is made this week and you are at the center of the activity. Sometimes it feels really good to be at the center of others’ good fortune.

Taurus, there are a million reasons why you shouldn’t do something, but you have to come up with the one reason why you should. Look harder.

Gemini, an estrangement has you feeling a little lonely. Bury the hatchet and start reconnecting with that special person you miss. Pisces provides some encouraging words.

CANCER Jun 22/Jul 22

LEO Jul 23/Aug 23

Cancer, think about all the things you have to get done, and then push them aside. This is a week to put your feet up and simply enjoy the moments as they come.

Think about someone else when you are asked for your advice on a situation. Instead of wondering what you would do, consider what this other person would do.

Virgo, a clash of personalities leaves you with a little pent-up anger. Simmering over the situation won’t help, so it’s VIRGO Aug 24/Sept 22 better if you just leave well enough alone.

LIBRA Sept 23/Oct 23

SCORPIO Oct 24/Nov 22

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23/Dec 21

Libra, there’s not much to worry about this week so you’re free and clear to have a good time. Make the most of social situations with friends or a special someone.

It’s time to make a few new friends, Scorpio. Joining a club or group can get you together with like-minded individuals and provide the opportunity to know others.

Sagittarius, some people are masters at skirting the system, but you are not one of them. Before taking the easy route, think about the consequences.

Deep Run show will draw big turnout By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Equestrians from across the region are preparing to make the trip to Goochland County for one of the South’s oldest and most prestigious horse shows. The Deep Run Horse Show opens today and runs through June 26 at the Manakin show grounds. The event has a rich history in Goochland, and annually attracts some of the best riders in the region for the five-day competition, highlighted by the Bryan Trophy competition on the final day. “The Deep Run Horse Show is over 50 years old and has been held each year at the current location in ManakinSabot on the Deep Run Hunt Show Grounds” said Deep Run Horse Show Association president Pam Johnson. “It began in the early sixties as a two- day Junior Show and evolved and grew into our current five day Professional and Junior/ Amateur AA Rated USEF show. Last year we were honored to have been designated a USEF Heritage Competition.” Show officials are expecting a healthy turnout for the traditional competition. “This show will once again draw over 400 horses from the east coast,” Johnson said. “Riders will compete for prize money and points in our many rated divisions. The points earned will go towards the end of the year zone and national awards. New this year is our designation as a World Champion Hunter Rider Event. “Deep Run will be one of 50 shows to offer the chance for riders to earn points toward this end of the year coveted award.” The show’s signature event, the Bryan Trophy Medal Class is scheduled for Sunday morning, the final day of the event. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot athletic directors Kristy Henderson and Brice Fritts join The members of the 2010-11 Golden Athlete Club.

At BSH, versatility is golden Knights overcome lack of quantity by emphasizing quality Contributed Report Blessed Sacrament Huguenot announced their 2010-11 Golden Athlete Award winners at an awards banquet last month. To be a member of the Golden Athlete Club, a student-athlete must participate in a varsity sport in each of the three seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) and be in good academic standing. This is the second year of the program to honor those multisport athletes. “It has been an incredible success,” said Boys Athletic Director Brice Fritts. “The number of multisport athletes has risen dramatically this year. In the first year of the award, eight studentathletes were awarded the prize, any only one female. This year, that number swelled to 24, including 10 female athletes. The 2010-2011 Golden Athlete Club Members are Clara Frazier, Haley O’Donnell, Brittany Zim-

Trevor Gilliam and Deon Watts. At a school as small as BSH, the pool of athletes is very small. In order to field teams, the school must have multisport athletes. These athletes form the backbone of the BSH athletic teams, creating depth and diversity. Focusing on just one sport hamstrings the rest of the athletic programs at the school. Last year the Athletic Directors looked to find ways to increase multi-sport participation. Re-designate the Low Density Residential portion (recommended density of one dwelling unit per two acres) of the property to Village Residential (recommended density of four dwelling units per acre). This area was originally designated Low Density Residential under the belief that it was a separate parcel and not part of the subject property. Re-designate a portion of the Village Residential area to Commerce Center to reflect the future development of this portion of the subject property for business uses. This portion of the subject property is currently zoned I-1 Light Industrial. The area was originally designated Village Residential without the knowledge of its current zoning.

FUQUA SCHOOL OPEN ENROLLMENT

Why

PK - GRADE 12 A GREAT CHOICE FOR YOUR CHILD JUST 38 MILES WEST

The mission of Fuqua School is to create a safe and supportive learning environment which fosters the development of boundless individual potential.

OF THE POWHATAN COURTHOUSE

Why FUQUA School? • We maximize the abilities of every child. Students are taught based on where they are performing academically rather than on their age/grade level, thus, a third grader may take fourth grade math. Students needing additional academic support are provided one on one or small group directed instruction. • The school places strong emphasis on the arts, providing classes in art, music, and theater, and is recognized for its award-winning band program that is available to students beginning in grade 5. • We offer pre-kindergarten through grade 12, enabling students to remain on one campus throughout their pre-college years. This minimizes the stress associated with transitions from one level to another and strengthens lifelong friendships. • Fuqua School has been recognized as one of the 100 Top Schools in Virginia by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, based on standardized test scores. • There are teacher assistants in every lower school classroom, creating low teacher-pupil ratios (1 to 9) and facilitating individualized instruction. In the middle and upper school, class sizes range from 9 to 16 students. • A wide-range of special area classes is offered at the lower school - art, music, science, physical education, technology and media all taught by specially trained teachers. • We offer multiple Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors classes, as well as opportunities for students to take classes at Hampden Sydney College free of charge.
