Need a job? New Walmart is now hiring New store is expected to hire between 350-400 employees before opening in October By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
Like it or not, the Powhatan Walmart is coming and it’s coming soon. According to Laura Francisco, a spokesperson for the company who spoke at the county’s last board of supervisors meeting, the supercenter at the intersection of Stavemill Road and Route 60 is expected to open
around mid-October, weather permitting. Until then, the company is operating a temporary hiring center in the Wellness Center strip mall located at 1660 Anderson Hwy. The hours of operation are Mon. – Fri. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sat. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. A hiring center employee said that the Powhatan Walmart will provide between 350-400 jobs, though she could not comment on how many of these positions will be part-time and how many will be full-time. However, she said that applications are currently being accepted for all positions. Those who wish to apply online should visit http://careers.walmart.com

Powhatan Habitat hitting its stride With no shortage of volunteers (and some lessons learned along the way) county organization has been humming right along
According to Habitat for Humanity’s executive director Terry Paquette, the organization has gotten “a little smarter” in terms of how they go about the building process, which has allowed them to speed up production. Skill jobs like hanging sheetrock, for example, are now sometimes done by professionals, allowing volunteers to focus on other areas of the construction see Habitat page 3A
Almost home For soon-to-be owners of county’s eighth Habitat house, experience has been ‘overwhelming’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it came to Powhatan’s Habitat for Humanity program, Brigid Lanzillotti thought she knew pretty much all there was to know. After all, through her job in the Powhatan Building Inspections Department, Lanzillotti had worked closely with Habitat Powhatan’s executive director Terry Paquette. She knew the homes were built largely by volunteers, and that the program gave Powhatan families the chance to exchange hard work for the opportunity to own their own home. What she didn’t realize – until Paquette mentioned it to her last year – was that she and her two boys could be one of those families. “I never really considered myself for it,” said Lanzillotti, a single mother who currently lives with her two young boys in a tiny one-bedroom apartment. “I had a job and a roof over my head,” she explained, so she thought she wouldn’t be eligible. At Paquette’s suggestion, however, Lanzillotti applied. She went through a process she describes as similar to applying for a mortgage, and welcomed Habitat board members into her apartment
Horse trail open again Popular path had been closed by state due to concerns about erosion By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
Though hotter than average temperatures this summer haven’t made for the ideal horseback riding conditions, area riders have had at least one thing to smile about: Since July 1, a trail in the Powhatan Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that had been closed to horses for more than a year was at last reopened. The Powhatan WMA encompasses some 4,440 acres, and though its trails and roads were primarily designed for hunters and anglers, horseback riding has generally been allowed on the premises. Riders were dismayed when, in April of 2011, officials from the Virginia Department of Fish and Wildlife closed down a portion of the Dogwood Trail – the only trail inside the WMA that makes a complete loop – because they said the trail needed time to rest. In May of 2011, a meeting between VDGIF and area horseback riders was held in order for the department to

discuss the reasons for the trail closures – primarily erosion and the possible threat to wild turkey habitat. Rick Busch, assistant director at the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), was present at the meeting, and said that at first he couldn’t understand the riders’ need for a loop trail, “why they objected so strenuously to looking at the same trail twice.” Busch, who is not an equestrian, said he learned from the riders that horses don’t like travelling back the same way they came: it makes them nervous. “I did learn a lot,” Busch said of the meeting. Although Busch saw this public forum as a moderate success, many riders who used the trail felt that it had accomplished little. When the trail was still closed a full year following this meeting, they felt that VDGIF had somehow misled them. One rider said she felt “shunned by the wildlife management group.” Fish and wildlife officials maintained that while they weren’t opposed to having horseback riders use the network of roads and trails within their wildlife management areas, horses and their riders simply weren’t among the agency’s top concerns. “Horseback riding is not really related to wildlife, and not really related to our mission,” Busch said in an interview with Powhatan Today in April. Her new home, which will be officially dedicated during a ceremony in September, sits in front of a pond on Lake Louise Dr. Her boys, Lanzillotti said, “are so excited they don’t know what to do with themselves. They’ve already found friends on our street – they’re just overjoyed. *** If Brigid Lanzillotti thought she and her sons didn’t fit the typical mold of a Habitat family, she wasn’t alone. According to Paquette, there are plenty of people who still think of Habitat as a welfare program, or a re-

If fact, says Paquette, a woman like Lanzillotti—someone with a stabile income and a good credit history whose current housing is situation is inadequate—is exactly the kind of person Habitat is designed to help. “There are still people who think of a Habitat participant as a welfare recipient, he explained, but the reality could not be farther from the truth. “Not only do the people who receive these homes have to put in over 200 hours [of labor on their homes], Paquette pointed out, “but they also have to pay the mortgage on the home. Father and daughter share musical journey As part of the band Route 64, Blanton Gordon and his daughter Kristen are becoming well-known on the local music scene By Ben Orcutt Contributing Writer
W
hile it’s common for a father and daughter to have a close relationship, it’s not as common for them to play together in a band. But that’s the case for Powhatan resident Blanton Gordon and his daughter, Kristen Gordon Johnson, who are members of the band Route 64. A Powhatan native and 2004 graduate of Powhatan High School, Johnson is the band’s lead singer and her father is the bass player, back-up singer and manager. Johnson, 26, said via e-mail that Route 64 started playing in January of last year. “We’ve had great chemistry from the beginning and there’s rarely any drama, which is hard to find in bands nowadays,” Johnson said. “We all have different tastes in music, which helps our overall sound come across more dynamic and versatile.” In addition to her and her father, Johnson said the other members of the band are: drummer Brian Legere of Midlothian; keyboard and harmonica player Dan Gillespie of Glen Allen; and lead guitarist Rob Moss, also of Midlothian. Route 64 plays a variety of music dating back to the 1960s up through today, Johnson said. “My own personal style leans more towards the country side, but we really just try to make sure we all enjoy what we’re playing because the audience feeds off that energy,” she said. Johnson said choosing Route 64 as the band’s name came naturally. “When we first got together, we would practice each week at the [former] lead guitar player’s home,” Johnson said. “Everyone took I-64 to get to and from practice and with 64 cutting through the heart of Richmond, it just made sense.” Johnson graduated from Longwood University in 2008, where she majored in communication studies with a minor in vocal performance. She and her husband Ian live in Richmond with their dogs – Jack, a lab/hound mix and Holly, a Sheltie. Johnson’s day job is an account manager for a Richmond firm that provides services for financial institutions. Juggling work obligations along with being in a band can be a bit tricky, Johnson said. The band usually practices once a week, but sometimes twice a week if they’re getting ready for a big event, she said. “It definitely has its ups and downs, but they’re both worth the extra work in my eyes,” Johnson said. “I love my job and I love being a part of Route 64. When you enjoy what you’re doing, you’ll find a way to make it work.”

While she has always enjoyed singing, Johnson said she got serious about it when she joined the choir at her middle school. “It’s always been an outlet for me, something I could turn to when I needed a release,” she said. “Some people like to work out when they’re stressed or frustrated, others like to call up a friend so they can vent. I prefer singing, whether it’s at practice or driving around in my car with the radio turned up.” Judy Garland continues to be one of her favorite singers, Johnson said, adding that these days she also fancies the Dave Matthews Band, the Zac Brown Band, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, and Sara Bareilles. Johnson said she doesn’t have a favorite gig that Route 64 has played. “I will say that shows with kids in the audience have been the most fun for me,” she said. “They are so excited to be there and even more excited when they know the songs we’re playing.” Some of Route 64’s upcoming shows, Johnson said, are Bar Louie at the Short Pump Town Center on Sept. 15, Bush Park Camping Resort in Deltaville on Sept. 22, and the Tobacco Company in Richmond on Sept. 29. Johnson said her mother, Debbie Gordon, maintains the band’s website – www.route64band.com – does promoting, and is the band’s number one fan. The band’s website contains videos that will give people a taste of what their music is like, Johnson said. “Our videos are live recordings of our performances and they’re great examples of what people can expect to see if they make it out for an upcoming show,” she said. “There’s a wide range of song selections from Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’ to The B-52’s ‘Love

Shack’ to The Band Perry’s ‘You Lie.’” Johnson said she enjoys playing in the band with her father. “Being in a band with my dad definitely helps give me a sense of security at gigs,” she said. “Having him around provides a great deal of comfort for me. It’s great to see my dad having so much fun at practice and on stage. Knowing that I had a small role in that happiness makes me feel like I’ve been able to give a little back to the man who’s done so much for me the past 26 years.” For Gordon, 59, the feeling is mutual. “One thing would be watching the reactions of the people we play for and [seeing] how much she enjoys performing,” Gordon said in an e-mail. “When the band breaks between sets, she rarely has time to get away from the stage before being approached by members of the audience, many of which are strangers, offering compliments and just wanting to talk to her. Another is watching her grow as a performer. She seems to get better with every gig. The other band members continually comment on how they enjoy playing with her. She’s not all about her and I think that says a lot.” One way for Route 64 to keep its good vibe going, Johnson said, is by continuing to blend classic songs along with covering new releases. She said the band is in the process of putting together some original songs. “Bands are hard to keep going after a certain period of time since there [are] usually clashing personalities and egos,” she said. “That hasn’t been an issue thus far and we hope to keep it that way. If we can do all this and make a little money at the same time, then we’re doing alright.”

C O U RT B R I E F S Lotion theft earns Cumberland resident felony charge in Powhatan Jason Holbrook Saunders, of Cumberland, is scheduled to stand trial in Powhatan Circuit Court on September 14 for a third offense larceny charge. Although the item Saunders is accused of stealing – a $6 bottle of lotion from a Powhatan tanning salon – is too small by its dollar amount to be deemed grand larceny (in Virginia grand larceny is theft over $200, when from a store or business), he is being charged with a felony rather than a misdemeanor due to his previous offenses.
Man intentionally hit deputy’s car Jason Edward Woods, of Richmond, will be issued a pre-sentence report in Powhatan Circuit Court on October 1, after he was found guilty of eluding and assaulting a police officer and of driving under the influence. Woods was arrested in May 2011 after a high-speed chase that began at the intersection of Trenholm Road and Route 60 in western Powhatan and continued west into Cumberland. The chase ended after Woods, who had turned his car around in Cumberland and headed back east, intentionally struck a Powhatan police cruiser with his own vehicle, then got out and laid in the road, telling the officer he was drunk.
Schools lighten punishment for cell phone offenses No more Saturday School for first cell phone offense By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
On September 4, Powhatan County Public Schools will be back in session. Here are a few policy changes – approved by the School Board at their latest meeting – you may want to be aware of: * Punishments for cell phone offenses have been lightened up a bit. Whereas previously a student could be subject to Saturday School or detention for a first-time cell phone offense – an offense can consist of using or “displaying” a phone – the punishment is now confiscation of
the device until the end of the day, parental notification, and two hours of in-school suspension. A second offense merits one day of in-school suspension and confiscation of the phone until a parent or guardian come to retrieve it; the punishment for a third offense is the same as for a second offense. Punishment for a fourth offense is three days out-of-school suspension. * Students requiring prescription drugs or medication at school must have the medication brought to school by a parent or guardian along with a written note.
school students. At a July workshop School Board member Rick Cole stated that this punishment is often unhelpful and even counterproductive, adding that several studies have shown this to be true. * Teachers of grades K-4 will now required to incorporate at least 10 minutes of “movement activity” – not including recess or P.E. – into their daily lesson plans.

Program offering a hand up By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When I last saw Terry Paquette, the executive director of Powhatan Habitat for Humanity, he was covered in mud. Drywall mud, to be more specific – or at least it looked like it. I guess it could have been paint. In any case, he looked like he’d been doing some work. As it turns out, he’s been doing a lot of work. He and the other Powhatan Habitat for Humanity volunteers have been working at solid pace; in fact, they have just about wrapped up the current Habitat house in record time. Habitat for Humanity has always seemed to me to be the perfect embodiment of the old adage “a hand up, not a handout.” Those who receive Habitat homes must take an active role in the construction of their home, typically by putting in at least 200 hours of “sweat equity.” They are not the passive recipients of charity – they are, quite literally, helping to build a better future for themselves and their families. We here at Powhatan Today salute the wonderful work that Paquette – and all of the Habitat volunteers – do for this community. A home is so much more than just four walls. Thanks to Powhatan Habitat for Humanity, eight county families now know that firsthand. *** Garden update: Since planting my first-ever garden earlier this year ( and mentioning it in this column), I’ve had several people ask me how the experiment was going (or, to be more accurate, growing.) After three months, I can happily report that I have gained plenty from the experience. Well, maybe not plenty to eat – to even call my harvest “modest” would be overstating things – but plenty just the same. As I’m sure any other novice gardener would attest, the joy has been in the watching and waiting, the thrill of seeing a shoot pop up and the satisfaction of eating something that started as a seed in my hand. “Green fingers are the extension of a verdant heart,” I’ve heard it said. I couldn’t agree more.

very presidential election cycle, the public complains about the nastiness, vitriol, lies, halflies and statics used in political campaigns. Since Virginia has a major election every year, our experience with such unpleasantness is continuous. But are political campaigns really more vicious than in previous years, or are we misremembering the past? As stated at the start of “I Claudius”: “the good old days of the theater aren’t as good as we remember.”

With few exceptions, all presidential campaigns, and most all other political campaigns, have included negative advertisements, starting with the first truly contested presidential campaign. John Adams accused Thomas Jefferson of being an atheist, and Jefferson accused Adams of being a monarchist. As you know, there were more accusations leveled against Jefferson regarding his personal life, and recent DNA evidence may or may not prove the accuracy of those charges. When Adams’ son John Quincy Adams ran for President, he was rumored to have procured young American virgins for the Czar of Russia. His opponent, Andrew Jackson, was called a bigamist, murderer and adulterer. The race ended in the House of Representatives, because no person won a majority of the electoral votes. Henry Clay, who also ran for President, was accused of making a Corrupt Bargain with Adams to deny Jackson the presidency. Clay was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Clay hated Jackson. Clay convinced Congressmen, from states in which Jackson had won the popular vote, to support Adams for President. Adams won the presidency. Clay was named Secretary of State. Clay’s new position was important, because the previous four Presidents had

won the position as the sitting Secretary of State. Jackson would later claim that one of his two regrets in life was not shooting Clay. The other regret was not hanging his and Adam’s traitorous Vice-President John C. Calhoun. Virginia’s own William Henry Harrison was accused of being too old, senile and drunk to hold the Presidency. Democratic newspapers called him “Granny” Harrison and one wrote: “give him a barrel of hard cider, a pension and he will sit the remainder of his days in his log cabin.” Harrison took advantage of the situation and called himself a log cabin and hard cider candidate. He claimed to be a man of the common people, while President Van Buren was an out-of-touch rich man. Of course, Harrison was rich, lived in a mansion and had a father who had signed the Declaration of Independence. Any of this sound familiar? Republicans heckled Grover Cleveland with cries of “Ma! Ma! Where’s my Pa?” in an attempt to out

African-American elected to the Powhatan Board of Supervisors; Paul Bell was the first African-American to serve on the Powhatan School Board; Florine Bell and Josephine Goodman have served as volunteers at election poll centers for decades. Obadiah Goodman and family have created a cultural scholarship awarded yearly to a deserving senior at Powhatan High School. The family’s contributions, courage, and service are deeply felt and deeply appreciated by the community. But it was not just past service and achievements celebrated at the reunion. Twelve scholarship awards were presented. And youth talent was displayed and applauded – from violin solos to
fashion design to poetry. Finally, let me remark on the family’s decision to hold the reunion – folks from all over our country coming back to their roots – here in Powhatan rather than elsewhere (at some hotel complex in another locale, for instance). Localmerchants – convenience stores, restaurants, caterers, campgrounds – all benefited. It is perhaps not a small thing for the Bell family to make this choice to help their homebase community. Our community salutes the extended Bell family for its presence here and service. We’re glad you “came home.” Carson Tucker Powhatan County Supervisor District 5

MPOV: Are we to blame for election year attack ads? Continued from page 10A
Cleveland as the father of an illegitimate child. Democrats got the last laugh and replied “Ha! Ha! Ha! He’s in Washington. The probable true father of the child was Cleveland’s law partner. Cleveland later married his law partner’s legitimate daughter in the White House. When the press asked Cleveland if he was dating his future mother in law, instead of her daughter, Cleveland replied that he would never date a woman that old. Even the teflon-coated, John F. Kennedy, pressed the limits of decency. Kennedy had his brother, Bobby, talk Franklin Roosevelt Jr. into questioning the military record of Hubert Humphrey during the 1960 West Virginia primary. As the papers put it, FDR Jr. called Humphrey a draft dodger. FDR Jr. would apologize for the attacks
later, but Humphrey ended his campaign after losing the West Virginia primary. Nixon of course had Watergate, an enemies list and resignation. Jimmy Carter, the simple man from Plains, used race in his run for the Governorship of Georgia. Carter’s campaign circulated a picture of his opponent, former Governor Carl Sanders, arm in arm with two black men. The men were basketball players celebrating an Atlanta Hawks’ victory, and Sanders was a part owner of the Hawks. The photos supposedly were distributed at Klan meetings in Georgia. Carter even attacked Sanders for paying tribute to Martin L. King, Jr. The most notorious attack ad was probably the “Daisy Ad by Lyndon Johnson. The ad ran one time, but is shown every four years when attack ads are discussed. In the ad, a lit-
tle girl picks flowers while counting. When she reaches nine, and man’s voice takes over counting down to zero. At zero, a mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion appears. This year we have the right calling Obama a socialist, foreigner or Muslim, while Harry Reid claims Romney does not pay taxes. We had television ads last year, and maybe to come this year, of a Paul Ryan look-a-like pushing a wheelchair bound elderly woman over Niagara Falls. Which is worse, being called pimp, warmonger, papist, tax dodger or socialist? I know there are worst epitaphs, but this is a family paper. Furthermore, there is one thing we must admit about these ads: they work! If they didn’t work, politicians wouldn’t run them. It’s like the National Enquirer. Newspapers and magazines all over the
country are going out of business, but, like a cockroach, the National Enquirer survives. Why? Because someone buys it! Politicians create websites which detail policy programs on every imaginable topic to appease various voting blocs. These programs are usually lifted from some obscure Washington think tank where folks are locked in conference rooms all day with nothing to do but think about solving our problems. Romney has a 50-plus point package on the economy. I have not read, will not read it and bet most of you have not read ... but we can all understand “It’s the economy stupid! So in the end, we are all to blame for negative campaigning. We like the negative ads, and politicians give us what we like. But are they really that much worst today than 200, 100 or 50 years ago?

County teacher takes part in STEM workshop Contributed report Cathy Maher, a computer resource teacher at Pocahontas Elementary School, participated recently in a weeklong workshop on integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning conducted by Longwood University’s Institute for Teaching through Technology and Innovative Practices. Maher was among 17 K-12 mathematics and science teachers who took part in the workshop Aug. 6-10 at Dinwiddie Middle School Annex, which focused on the integration of STEM in mathematics and science classrooms with an emphasis on engineering design and technology. Other teachers
were from schools in Brunswick and Dinwiddie counties. Participants received instruction from ITTIP faculty on inquiry-based learning, engineering design process, problem solving and incorporating technology in the classroom. A real-time video session was held with Ferdi Serim, author of Digital Learning: Strengthening and Assessing 21st Century Skills. The ITTIP was awarded funding for this professional development as a partner in the Virginia STEM Collaborating Nurturing Network to Enhance Content-focused Teaching project, funded by the Virginia Department of Education.

Byrd could lead pack in Village Run Powhatan runner could eventually challenge event’s all-time best times By Fred Jeter Contributing Writer
It stands to reason a girl named Byrd yearns someday to fly off into the wild blue yonder. For now, however, she travels by foot. Powhatan High senior Rachel Byrd, who dreams of becoming a U.S. Navy pilot, looms as a female favorite for the Sept. 1 Village Run 5K. The long-stemmed 5-foot-8 daughter of Cheryl and Vernon Byrd already ranks with the county’s most established enduro ath-
letes, at age 17. Byrd was the fastest Powhatan female in last year’s Village Run … without ever shifting into high gear. Holding back under direction from PHS cross-country coach Bucky Webb, Byrd covered the 3.1-mile course through the Courthouse area in a lead-footed (for her) 21:11. “It was supposed to be an easy run … a tempo run,” said Byrd. Overall woman’s winner was Kelsey Scheitlin, a non county resident, in 19:30. Byrd’s smooth stride figures to quicken this go round, although she still may not go all out. “I’d like to ‘race it,’ but I’m not sure,” she said. She differentiates between “running it” and “racing it,” with “racing” the faster pace.
A possible high-profile event Sept. 15 – the Adidas Challenge in Cary, N.C. – is the more important race for Byrd and the PHS Indians team. Even at less than her best, Byrd leaves most coughing in her wake. Byrd’s personal-record 18:21 was set two autumns ago at the State Group AA meet at The Plains. Last fall, she won Jefferson District (19:58) cross-country title and was 37th overall at States. In spring track, Byrd grabbed second in District 3,200 (11:56) and fourth in 1,600 (5:28). “Rachel has been running all summer and she looks great,” said Webb. “She goes above and beyond anything you ask her to do see Byrd page 4B

Powhatan scrimmage highlights strength of defense
You might not have seen these Olympics By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer
By Michael Schoeffel Contributing Writer
The 2012 version of the Powhatan Indians football team saw their first competitive action of the season last Friday evening, as they traveled to King William High School to cut their teeth against two reasonably challenging opponents. The scrimmage was of the jamboree-variety, which meant three teams – King William (a regular competitor in the Group A, Division 2 playoffs), Park View-South Hill (a former Southside District foe) and Powhatan – were slated to compete against each other in a sort of round robin of exhibition games. Although the score wasn’t officially recorded, the Indians did, in fact, outscore their opponent in both contests (7-0 over Park View and 14-0 over King William). As is the case in most early-season scrimmages, a lack of discipline was

prevalent. The Indians were whistled for motion penalties on at least four separate occasions, and a 30-plus yard run by Norris Goode was negated by a block-in-the-back call. A lack of discipline was also the main culprit on several fumbles. On three occasions the

The games of the XXX Olympiad were nothing short of phenomenal, with 15-year-olds winning gold medals, teenagers setting world records and the United States ladies’ blitzkrieg. Their medal count smoked not only their male countrymen, but almost every other nation. But inevitably, during this fortnight of frantic activity, an event of this magnitude and duration can’t help but overshadow other events, particularly other sporting events. Unfortunately, almost totally obscured (it was already toiling in obscurity anyway) was the initial undertaking – a scary but almost appropriate word in this case – of the Bucket List Olympics. Four seniors with a lifeexperience totaling 258 years – and a white-water experience totaling zero years– agreed to take on the Nolichucky River white-water rafting experience. The Nolichucky River Gorge, “the deepest river gorge east of the Mississippi,” according to the outfitter, is an 11mile stretch of class three and four rapids running from Western North Carolina into Eastern Tennessee – “a World class experience,” our guide proclaimed. While no one in our small party was willing to take the credit (blame) for coming up with the idea, after being introduced to our guide “Pops” we climbed into a small rubber raft in one of the see Points page 5B

RUNNING IN POWHATAN FOR 30 YEARS! The Powhatan Village Run was established in 1981 by Phil Blankenship and Hal Hedley as a community road race for all ages and skill levels. Over the years the race has benefited many causes and donated thousands of dollars to charity. However, the primary purpose of the race has not been to make money, but to provide a quality road race in a rural and hospitable setting. We are proud to be one of Central Virginia’s oldest and best road races!

Indians: Scrimmage against King William, Park View showed PHS running game is solid led running-back L.J. Jackson as he received a handoff. While some folks may view these lapses in focus as glaring red flags that need to be addressed and mended immediately, it seems more apt to chock them up to either a case of first-game jitters or, simply, a lack of experience. It’s easy to forget that the Indians – along with most other high school teams – generally only practice for two weeks before the initial scrimmage. That’s doesn’t give the players very much time to gel, especially since some players are manning starting positions at the varsity level for the first time in their careers. An area in which Powhatan didn’t look the least bit unfocused was the running game. Senior Norris Goode, the prime candidate for the starting running back position, had a solid night toting the rock. Aided by some forceful run blocking by the big men up front, Goode was able to break off several picturesque runs, including a 64-yard touchdown on a toss play against King William. Most of Goode’s big gains were the result of outside run plays – tosses, stretches, etc – but he was also able to find a decent amount of running room between the tackles. Under center for Powhatan was Wes Garrett, a senior, who spent the entirety of both scrimmages calling signals for the first team offense. He displayed poise and toughness throughout the evening, standing tall in the pocket and delivering catchable passes to his receivers even when the pass rush was imminent. He looked equally comfortable dropping straight back and rolling out. He ended the night with one touchdown and no interceptions. However, it wasn’t all lollipops and crisps for the young gunslinger. His inexperience manifested itself several times throughout the night, as he threw a few balls into heavy coverage (at least two of which could have been intercepted) and fumbled three center/quarterback exchanges. Expect these lapses in judgment and focus to become less and less frequent, however, as Garrett continues to gain valuable in-game experience in the coming weeks. On the defensive side of the ball, the Indians looked characteristically strong. The front four stood stiff against a steady dose of tosses, stretches and counters from the Park View offense. The linebackers swarmed to the ball like a pack of feral hyenas, and the defensive backs picked off the Dragons’ quarterback twice. Park View’s most productive drive came on their first possession, when a twenty-yard gain on a counter followed by another big gain on a skinny post set them up on the Powhatan two yard line. The Indians’ defensive remained rigid, however, and shut the Dragons down before they reached pay dirt. While the Dragons’ utilized the ground game as their primary means of attack, the Cavaliers set up in the shotgun and centered their offense around quarterback Freeman McPhearson, a strong-armed, JMUcommit with a gangly, athletic build. The King William offense came out in the hurry-up, an up-tempo style of offense, when run properly, wears down the defense and creates favorable matchups for the offense. But, on this night at least, the Powhatan defense had little trouble adjusting to the faster-pace, and senior Logan Allen intercepted McPhearson on his second pass of the scrimmage. Although the Cava-

liers did complete several long passes – including a deep comeback along the right sideline on their first play from scrimmage – they weren’t able to move the ball consistently at any point of the contest, a testament to the strength of Powhatan’s defense. All in all, the two scrimmages accomplished precisely what scrimmages are meant to accomplish: they revealed the apparent strengths of this year’s
Indians’ squad (unsurprisingly, defense and the running game) and highlighted some areas that may need improvement (namely, catching the ball in traffic and discipline in general). Next week, the level of competition will be bumped up a notch, as the Indians will scrimmage the Matoaca Warriors, a Group AAA, Division 6 school.

… I’m sure she’s shooting for a sub 20 (minutes).” A covey of PHS cross-country runners are expected to compete for Village honors. The orange ‘n’ black contingent will include female Kaitlin Adams, winner of her age class a year ago, and Sid Noble in the male division. Adams was fifth in Jeffer-
son District 3,200 last spring, in 12:16. Noble was the 10th fastest boy in the District, at 10:37. “We’ll enter as many of our kids as we can; we want to show our support for the county and for the Village Run,” said Webb. Byrd, who grew up in Chesterfield County (Evergreen Elementary) and would have attended Midlothian High,
doesn’t slow down in the classroom. She ranks 30th in a senior class of 312 and has served as Vice President of SCA and Interact Club. She’s working now on getting a congressional nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. “I went to Navy’s running camp this summer and loved it,” said Byrd. “I got to meet
the (cross-country) coach and some of the girls on the team.” Her back-up plan includes applications to Virginia, James Madison and UCLA. At full throttle, Byrd could eventually challenge the Village Run’s all-time best. Fastest listed times by a female are: *Elizabeth Craig (2007, 17:49) * Patty Valadka (1993, 18:34)
*Lori Robertson (1998, 19:02) * Cecil Astrop (1996, 19:19) * Sarah Burkett (2003, 19:22) * Karen Killeen (1999, 19:56) * Scheitlin (2011, 19:30) Those sub-20 runs were all by non-county entries. Byrd’s long range plans revolve around Navy blue; but first she’d like to make a big splash in Powhatan.

thing to master about football was probably learning the new defensive schemes this year. As most people know, Coach Henderson left to go to Freeman this past year, but most people do not know that Coach Henderson also took our Defensive Coordinator with him. At first, I had no idea what our defense was going to look like. I knew it was not going to change much when Coach Fritts introduced me to Coach Gundry though. Coach Gundry kept the same base set, however this past training camp I have had to learn different coverages and different blitzing schemes. This had to be the most difficult thing to

we’ll try something else on third down. Well, when I was being tackled, one of the Liberty players was able to strip the ball and recover my fumble. It was pretty terrible feeling to know you just let your team down in the biggest JV game of the year. At the time, I would always lie and say story about how I laid the ball on the ground and the kid took it, but that was just to save face.
The best advice I received about playing football would be from my Dad. I still live by this phrase when I play defensive back. My dad would always tell me when I was growing up, “Sam, play deep as the deepest and as wide as the widest.” I really never understood it growing up until I asked him when I was in Sixth grade. All the advice meant was to play as deep back as the deepest wide receiver and play as wide as the widest wide receiver; it was as simple as that. My dad was and still is my biggest hero.
What is the best advice you have received about playing the game,

few flat spots on the Nolichucky. Our flotilla included seven other rafts, strangely all the others were sixperson craft, manned and womened by a nubile and buff contingent of teen to twenty-something’s and guided by pony-tailed behemoths in the stern. Pops’ sparse hair hadn’t seen pony-tail potential in 40 or so years and he had the unnerving habit, particularly as we passed more deeply into the gorge in Tennessee, of shouting over the surging water “paddle faster, I hear banjo music.” Fumbling and bumbling our way into and around the slippery rubber raft, we were the last to pull away from the launch site, a not-so-auspicious beginning which quickly became a travesty. We had muddled our way barely 50 yards when Pops called a halt to the proceedings. With the first rapid rapidly approaching, the Senior Citizen Contingent was so out of synch that all we could do was make the small craft turn in lazy circles. Our guide decided that the entire crew had to be repositioned. Imagine, if you will, four out-of-shape 60- and 70year-olds flopping around in a rubber boat trying to change positions. But that’s how desperate our guide was, trying to find a way to get us through the next 11 miles inside the boat and upright. I ended up in the front-right “power position,” probably because I was the largest and would serve nicely as a barrier to knock down the tons of water that tried to inundate the little craft over the next 11 miles. I have to say that I was extremely proud of our crew as we learned how to work together, understand our guide’s instructions and work our way through some very long and fairly violent rapids. In the end we were one of only two boats that didn’t have anyone “ejected” or have their boat capsize during the
entire trip. And, more importantly, when we finally nudged our rubber raft onto a sandbar outside of Irwin Tennessee, we were all laughing and trying to figure out when we were going to be able to do it again and if we were ready to step up to class fives. It really was a tremendous amount of fun and I, personally, never heard any banjo music. My wife Pat and I were so pleased with our results in event one of the Bucket List Olympics that we signed up for the two-mile, 11 station zip-line challenge at Hawks Nest on top of the mountain at Seven Devils North Carolina. After conquering the Nolichucky, the Hawks Nest zip line was a piece of cake. I have to admit, however, that being both the oldest and the largest of our 15-person contingent of zip liners, I had a great deal of difficulty mastering the braking thing. I had a tendency to turn into a 200 pound bowling ball, rolling over or knocking down the guide charged with reining me in at the end of each segment. At the last station he was bruised but, thankfully, non-combative. Now seasoned Olympians, Pat and I opted for a two-mile trek up the side of a mountain to round out our personal triathlon. This was not a very well thought out event. While both of us are walkers, we’re flat-land walkers. Plus, the physical activities that we experienced in our first two segments were sit- down activities. The trek was up the mountain and then down into another gorge to view a magnificent water fall. The climb out was embarrassingly humbling. Ultimately, though, I was pretty proud of what we achieved and feel compelled to add to my bucket list. What’s next? Bungee jumping? Sky Diving? Hang gliding? Hmmm...
