The Powhatan Sherriff’s Department has two new employees: Jake, an 18month-old German Shepherd, and Diesel, a 14-month-old Dutch Shepherd. The canines, which replaced two older dogs that had to be retired, were purchased and trained with a $31,387 grant awarded by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. The Rotary Club of Powhatan raised an additional $3,488 for the purchase and training of the animals. Karen Alexander, Powhatan County’s grant coordinator, said that a portion of the grant money was also used to purchase a “throwbot” -- a.k.a. a recon robotic scout, which is a mobile video camera that can be used to assess the danger of a situation without the use of a human reconnoiterer. “Basically it’s a device you can use on tactical missions,” Alexander said. “It can be critical in potentially dangerous situations.” Mike Wentworth, an investigator in the Sheriff’s Department, said that Jake and Diesel graduated from Culpeper’s Pro K-9 Services Training Center on Friday. “We’re just hitting the street with two green recruits,” Wentworth said. Wentworth said the dogs were chosen “based on their character” and are “trained in patrol work and narcotics.” He said the dogs can be used to sniff out criminals, drugs, missing children, or discarded pieces of evidence.

A big day for area small businesses Nationwide effort to promote small retailers may offer county shops a boost By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

Economic downturn or no economic downturn, post-Thanksgiving is still the busiest shopping time of the year. Black Friday sales bring shoppers out to big box retailers, and the following Monday (coined “Cyber Monday” in 2005) sees a dramatic increase in online shopping. But what about local mom and pop merchants? Do they get forgotten in this late November buying frenzy? Not if those behind “Small Business Saturday” have anything to do with it. see Business page 3A

Major Clyde O. Childress, USMC, Ret, says he was inspired by his family to begin writing down the events that led him from his home in Midlothian, to the military, and finally to Powhatan.

For decorated Marine pilot, writing story leads to healing Powhatan’s Clyde Childress, known for passionate support of veterans, publishes autobiography By Roslyn Ryan Editor

moment takes up only a tiny The fraction of Powhatan resident Clyde Childress’s memoir—less than a page—but is impossible to forget. Childress, a young Marine finally coming home after surviving over 500 combat missions in Vietnam, enters an airplane terminal in San Francisco. Wearing his uniform, he is confronted by an angry civilian who calls him a baby-killer. “I set my bag on the floor,” Childress recalls quietly, “knocked him about 10 feet off his pins, picked my bag up, and continued to the boarding gate for the final leg of my trip home.” And that, as they say, was that.

Major Childress, who retired from the military in 1977, tells the story of his homecoming in a simple, straightforward style, devoid of swagger or bravado. The incident was one of so many memories that floated to the surface when he sat down a few years ago to write the story of his life, a journey that took him from a small trailer in Midlothian, to the war-ravaged jungles of Southeast Asia, to California and, finally, to Powhatan. Along the way he collected awards and accolades—includ-

ing the Distinguished Flying Cross—cheated death on more occasions than even he can remember, and found time to meet and marry the woman of his dreams, Connie, whom he calls “my soul mate.” In Forks: The Life of One Marine, Childress details his early days in Midlothian where his family ran a successful drive-in movie theater. Childress holds little back in his assessment of his early years, describing a family life made tortuous by an unstable, often cruel, father. Though he would eventually make his peace with his father before the man died, Childress attributes some of his early drive to his desire not to follow a similar path. In everything, it seems, he excelled: He graduated as the valedictorian of his class; he became a licensed pilot before

he finished high school; he went into the Marines and collected honor after honor; he distinguished himself in battle, and then in business, making a living after he retired from the military as a highly successful real estate agent. Childress decided to write the book at the insistence of his family, he says, but somewhere in the writing he also found a sort of therapy. Though the sections detailing his time in combat were difficult to put down on paper, Childress says that writing them down also seemed to release him in a way. For the first time in 40 years, he says, he has stopped having nightmares. “I think I got some of the demons out of me,” says Childress, though he retains much of the disappointment he felt see Childress page 2A

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Lions Club wraps up another successful eye-screening in county school system Following the Lion Motto, “We Serve” the Powhatan Lions Club has completed its ninth consecutive year of performing eye screenings in the Powhatan County School System and Blessed Sacrament. The Powhatan Lions Club was the first Lions Club in the state to be trained and certified by Prevent Blindness MidAtlantic to actually go into the schools and perform eye screenings. This year, as in the past, the club screened over 1500 students in grades kindergarten, third, seventh, and tenth. This service insures that each student is screened multiple times and this gives the school nurses more time to focus on the students identified as needing further testing. If that student does not pass their examination, then the parents are notified and further action is suggested. This year the club had 12 Lions perform a total of 268 hours of service performing these tasks. Approximately 85 students were referred to the school nurse for additional screenings. Since the club also helps needy families pay for professional exams and glasses some of those identified may have their vision problems identified and corrected because of the good work of the Powhatan Lions Club. Lions Club meetings are held in the County Seat Restaurant the first and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in serving Powhatan County please visit the Lions Club website http://www.eclubhouse.org/sites/powhatanva or call Lion Ron Marchand 598-8178.

Thieves raid Graceland Baptist church food pantry Powhatan Sheriff’s Department is investigating another break-in at Graceland Baptist Church, after someone raided the building’s food pantry sometime after 7 p.m. Saturday night. According to Crime Analyst Anne Reynolds, this in the second theft of food from the church in two months.

This time, however, furniture was taken as well. Reynolds admitted that the crime does not fit the typical profile for break-ins, which often involve jewelry and other small valuables. “Usually, when we see these kinds of things, the people aren’t going for the canned goods and the eggs,” said

Reynolds, adding that a church, particularly Graceland Baptist, is an odd place from which to steal food. “It’s such a giving church,” remarked Reynolds. “If somebody needed food they probably would have just given it to them.” —Roslyn Ryan

Lt. Col. Hugh Taylor Cole III Lt. Col. Hugh Taylor Cole III, Ret. U.S. Air Force, of Lanexa, departed this life on Saturday, November 12, 2011. Taylor, or “T.C.” was surrounded by his family at his home on the Chickahominy River. He was born in Charlottesville, Va. on February 5, 1947 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh T. Cole Jr. of Powhatan. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne W. Cole, and his only child, daughter, Courtney Cole Bucci and her husband, Mark Bucci; as well as four brothers and their wives, Rick and Pam Cole of Powhatan, David and Sharon Cole of Henrico, Billy and Eva Cole of Powhatan and John Cole of Powhatan; as well as two sisters and their husbands, Suzanne and George Tompkins of Justin, Texas and Sandra and Tommy Nelms of

Chesterfield; and one sister-in-law, Nancy Cole of Powhatan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Shirley Cole, and beloved brother, Iven M. Cole. Taylor loved and enjoyed many things in a life that ended too soon. Those that knew him best, or even a casual acquaintance, knew Taylor had one great love, the love of flying. From a young age, Taylor longed to be a pilot. He obtained his private pilot’s license at the age of 16 from Hilltop Airport in Amelia, Va. After graduating from Powhatan High School and Virginia Commonwealth University, he joined the Air National Guard in 1970. His distinguished career in the Virginia Air National Guard spanned for 28 years. During that time, he flew several different fighters, including the F-105 Thunderchief, A-7 Corsair, and the F-16 Fighting Falcon. He flew missions over Panama, Bosnia and Kosovo, and Iraq after the First Gulf

War. Taylor was also a First Officer and Captain for USAirways, but it was flying fighters which gave him the most joy. Known affectionately as Otis, H. T., and Hewey Dewey by his family and friends, Taylor loved spending his down time on the Chickahominy River, cruising on boats, and listening to beach music in Myrtle Beach. His passion for UVA football was legendary, as he routinely lost his voice after watching the team lose numerous football games late in the fourth quarter. He also loved taking trips to Nags Head, where he taught his daughter about the Wright Brothers, and their fantastic Flyer. He also taught her to always “check six”. Fireworks will follow for sure, but be forewarned: You might be demoted to bringing the canned cranberry sauce next year — or banished to the kiddie table. Few things are cemented into Thanksgiving tradition like green bean casserole. When people talk about their holiday feast foods, that soupy concoction always seems to rank right up there with the turkey and mashed potatoes. Sometimes it comes before the mashed potatoes. Some things in life cannot be explained. However, all holiday dinner staples — green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberries or stuffing — have delicious alter egos. There are lots of dishes that break with tradition and offer fresh tastes and new versions of our favorites. Love sweet potatoes? Save them for dessert. Try them mashed in moist mini cakes with creamy caramel sauce

and pecans. Not big on the canned cranberry sauce? You will be once you use it to make simple but festive vinaigrette with some basic ingredients — oil and balsamic vinegar, orange juice, and a little salt and sugar. Stuffing is an easy one to alter. Everyone seems to have her own signature recipe, and if you don’t, the list of ingredients is long enough to tailor one to your own tastes. For starters, use a variety of breads, like rye, French, plain old white or even cornbread. Then add chopped veggies like celery, carrots and onions. Apples, figs or pears show up in lots of stuffing recipes, as do spices such as sage and fennel. For even more flavor, use pork sausage or lower-fat turkey sausage. Then there’s the green bean casserole, or the G.B.C., as Tom Parfitt, culinary special-

ist with the University of Richmond’s Center for Culinary Arts, has heard it lovingly referred to. Yes, it’s so popular it’s been given a hip street name. “It’s just one of those weird casseroles that people love,â€? he said. Parfitt admits he’s never had the G.B.C. that many people make, with the canned green beans, canned cream of mushroom soup and crunchy fried onions. He’s not knocking anyone’s tastes, but he said a fresh, healthy version of G.B.C. — using fresh green beans, crispy fried leeks and mushrooms in a homemade sauce — is easier to make than you think. Getting people to look beyond the traditional dishes can be tough, he said, though he’s encouraged by the masses who are beginning to adopt healthier cooking habits and eating fresh ingredients, even during the holidays. “The trend is moving toward more local fare and perimeter grocery shopping,â€? he said, “not down the aisles where all of the bar-code food is.â€? Parfitt’s G.B.C. recipe involves cooked fresh green beans, which he puts into a roux of sautĂŠed mushrooms and herbs, flour, chicken stock and half-and-half. He tops the mixture with fried leeks, cheddar cheese and panko breadcrumbs. But you could always see Can it page 7A

Cranberry Vinaigrette Makes about 2/3 cup ½ cup canned whole-berry cranberry sauce ¼ cup orange juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon peeled, minced fresh ginger ¼ teaspoon salt Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until ingredients have emulsified. Serve over salad. -- Adapted from Cooking Light

Celery Casserole Makes 4 to 6 servings

3 cups diced celery ¼ cup slivered almonds ½ cup chopped or sliced water chestnuts 1 cup sliced mushrooms ¼ cup PLUS 4 tablespoon butter, divided 3 tablespoons flour (or more to suit) 1 cup chicken broth ¾ cup half-and-half ½ cup breadcrumbs ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-9-inch baking dish or use nonstick cooking spray. Add celery to a pot on the stove with just enough water to cover and boil until fork tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Drain and combine with almonds, water chestnuts and mushrooms in the baking dish. Over low-medium heat, melt ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon

of butter and add flour to make a roux. Add chicken broth and half-and-half and stir. (You can add more flour, by tablespoons, if you’d like a thicker sauce.) Pour sauce over celery mixture. Back on the stovetop, melt 3 tablespoons butter with breadcrumbs and blend. Pour breadcrumbs over celery mixture and top with Parmesan cheese. Bake for 25 minutes. -- Adapted from Southern Living

Fig & Almond Stuffing Makes 10 to 12 servings 1 12-ounce loaf peasant bread, cut into cubes 1 ½ cups sliced almonds 2 cups figs, stemmed and coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons EACH:

chopped sage and parsley 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing pan 1 onion, finely chopped 3 celery ribs, chopped 2 large carrots, chopped 1 fennel bulb, cored and finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon fennel seeds, finely chopped 8 large eggs 2 ½ cups vegetable stock Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste Preheat oven to 350 degrees and butter a 9-by-13inch baking dish. Spread bread cubes on a large baking sheet and toast for about 15 minutes, stirring once. Spread the almonds on a second baking sheet and toast for 5 minutes, until lightly browned. Transfer the bread

and almonds to a large bowl and add the figs, sage and parsley. In a large skillet, melt the butter. Add onion, celery, carrots, fennel, garlic and fennel seeds and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about five minutes. Let cool, then scrape the vegetables into the bowl with the bread mixture. Stir in eggs and stock and season with salt and pepper. Spread the stuffing mix into the buttered baking dish and cover with foil. Bake 30 minutes, until heated through. Uncover and bake for about 10 to 15 minutes more, until the top is lightly browned. Serve hot. -- Adapted from Food & Wine magazine

Hey Eddie, My 2002 Dodge Ram pick up takes a long time to start. It cranks over fine, but I feel like I have to hold the key to the start position way too long. Do you think a tune-up would help? Mark–Powhatan Mark, If you’re asking about if a tune-up will help, it’s probably been too long since you had one. Every engine needs a little TLC from time to time. I think you should check or have checked the condition of your engine. Bad spark plugs or ignition components could cause the problem you’re talking about. Mark, instead of just holding the key to the start position, try cycling the key from “off” to “on” about three times before you go to the start position. If this makes your truck start right up the problem is probably a bad check valve in the fuel pump. The check valve in the fuel pump keeps fuel in the fuel lines and close to the injectors so you won’t have long crank times. When this valve sticks, fuel will drain back to the fuel tank when the engine is cut off. Then the truck has to get the fuel from the tank to the injectors, resulting in a long crank time. Sorry, you can’t just replace the check valve; you have to replace the fuel pump. Trivia question: What car in 1971 came with a key that featured a spark plug gapper, phillips screwdriver, distributor and spark plug gauge and a 1 ½" ruler? Hey Eddie, I drive a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer with 58,000 miles, so it’s not under warranty. My problem is my ABS light is on. The shop that checked it for me couldn’t tell me for sure what the problem was. They said all the speed sensors tested well and the module may be bad, but they were not 100% sure. The module is very expensive so I don’t want to just replace it if it is not the problem. Is there a way to be sure? Bill–Cartersville Bill, I don’t blame you; a module is a pretty expensive guess. If your ABS (anti-locking braking system) light is on it should have set a code that can be retrieved using a scan tool. A qualified technician should be able to use that code to start a diagnosis. After testing, the technician should be able to tell what the problem is. Most ABS systems in today’s late model cars can be very complex. Having the right diagnostic equipment is very important. On your year Trailblazer, a common problem I have encountered is a wiring harness that runs too close to the air conditioning compressor. The edge of the compressor pulley cuts the insulation which then causes the wire to ground out on the compressor or it can cut the wire into and cause an open circuit. This is not a real hard repair, but could take awhile to find if you haven’t seen it before. Bill, just remember - diagnostics take time and time is money. You could expect to pay two or more hours of labor just to find the problem, but it should be able to be found without having to just replace parts. I hope this helps.

INSIDE THE FIRST AMENDMENT

I’m sure I wasn’t alone last week in scratching my head at the news that Bon Secours hospitals will no longer be hiring smokers, or even those using a nicotine patch or gum in an attempt to quit. At a time when good jobs with fair wages are so difficult for so many to find, I find it tough to swallow that any place would yank up the welcome mat just because an applicant uses tobacco in their private, off-work hours. This type of policy certainly isn’t limited to Bon Secours. A quick internet search reveals that hospitals all over the county enforce such a rule. But that doesn’t make it any less strange. After all, as far as we know, carrying extra weight or binge drinking on the weekends does not disqualify one from working at any one of the many other medical facilities that have adopted a similar policy in recent years. And yet both of these can have disastrous health consequences in both the short and long term. Not to put too fine a point on it, but where does it stop? Will my driving record be up for debate in my next interview (“We’d love to hire you, but I think we need to talk about these speeding tickets, Ms. Ryan”)? How about my penchant (some might call it a physical addiction) for eating an entire pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream after a horrible day? I don’t smoke myself, but I do know plenty of intelligent, capable, wonderful people who do. And, frankly, not hiring them because of it would be just about any company’s loss. Let’s face it: smoking does not make a lot of sense for many reasons. This is not news. But refusing to hire someone simply because they make a personal choice to use nicotine off the premises? That, as was evident in the papers and news broadcasts last week, is news – and frightening news at that.

(Davenport v. American Atheists). Although the 12-foot tall crosses were donated by a private group, they bear the Utah Highway Patrol official symbol and are mostly on public land. According to the 10th Circuit, a “reasonable observer” would conclude that “the state of Utah is endorsing Christianity.” What will this mean for other roadside crosses on public land? Would removing the police insignia cure the First Amendment problem? Is it more or less of a constitutional issue if other religious symbols are also used? The Supreme Court won’t say. Folks in Whitefish and Giles County who are determined to keep their religious symbols in public spaces are scrambling to prevail under current, murky Supreme Court establishment-clause jurisprudence.

Finally we know the answer. Earlier this month scientists announced three new elements had been named: Darmstadtium, Roentgenium, and Copernicium. The elements are man-made and can exist only under laboratory conditions. This is like Newton’s apple: It explains so much. Back in your humble servant’s school days, the Periodic Table had only 11 elements: hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, metal (magnetic), metal (non-magnetic), plastic, and I forget the other three. Chemistry class consisted of Mr. Storck dropping things into a cup of liquid nitrogen and smashing them with his shoe. see Kids page 9A

Debate: Who is right? Continued from page 8A

Last week, Montana Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg announced that he would introduce legislation proposing a land swap between the National Forest System and Whitefish Mountain Resort, thereby putting the statue on private land. If it passes, Rehberg’s bill could end the debate since the Supreme Court recently upheld a similar arrangement (in Salazar v. Buono, 2010). Meanwhile, Giles County school officials are hoping to save the Ten Commandments display by surrounding the commandments with a variety of historical documents. They are looking to the Supreme Court’s holiday-display decisions that allow government-sponsored holiday displays to include some religious symbols if the overall message is secular. What’s remarkable about cases like these

(and there are many) is how far some Americans will go to preserve religious symbols on public property – and how far others will go to see that all vestiges of religion are removed from the public square. With true believers dug in on both sides, it’s not surprising that the Supreme Court struggles to find a balanced approach that keeps the government from taking sides in religion, but allows citizens to display their faith in public spaces. One lesson of the conflict seems clear: In a diverse, divided and litigious America, one religious symbol no longer fits all. If it ever did. Charles C. Haynes is director of the Religious Freedom Education Project at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C., 20001. Web: firstamendmentcenter.org. E-mail: chaynes@freedomforum.org.

Kids: Way more to learn now Biology, taught by Mr. Haas, consisted of watching film strips from the 1950s about people with elephantiasis and guinea worm. Nobody took physics because it hadn’t been invented yet. (Film strips, by the way, were a cutting-edge multimedia pedagogical tool that were going to revolutionize classroom instruction and turn every child into a rocket scientist. Just like laptops and tablet PCs are doing today!) Point is, back then nobody learned much science because there was not much to learn. Nobody had heard of quarks or pulsars or gene sequencing or dark matter — let alone later discoveries like Cylons, Ferengi or Decepticons. Nowadays, they won’t even let you into the science fair unless your research into CalvinBenson cycle catalysts for artificial photosynthesis is drawing venturecapital offers from private-equity firms. Same for history: They just keep making more of it. For the WWII generation, the Great Depression wasn’t history, it was current events. They didn’t have

to learn about the civilrights movement or Vietnam or Watergate or Reaganomics because none of that had happened yet. Today’s pupils not only have to learn all that more recent history, they will soon be learning the history of 9/11, the Iraq War and the Obama administration. And the cohort after that? Good luck to them, because they’re going to need it. By contrast, math is the one area of study where people don’t keep making more of it. Once mathematicians proved there are transfinite numbers — numbers bigger than infinity — there was really nowhere else to go. Nothing left for math to do but sit back and rest on its laurels. If anything, math is moving in the opposite direction from other academic disciplines: The best mathematicians are busy solving old puzzlers, like Fermat’s last theorem. Know what that means? It means math is getting easier over time, not harder. Don’t believe it? Just look at the most recent NAEP test scores. Reading scores are down. Math scores are up. Case closed!

WORLD WAR III

24-HOURS LONG

how to survive

Powhatan Village Building Rev. Dwayne Byerly

Many voices say the “end of the world” is near. This sends thoughts of fear and panic into the hearts of the people. Issues such as 2012 being the end of the Mayan calendar and Nostradamus’ predictions, global warming, meteors hitting the earth, World War III, and Armageddon will cause some people to make irrational decisions. These decisions can range from giving away life savings and food hoarding, to the extreme of someone taking their own life. These voices paint a dark picture of life with no hope. God says in His Word, “I know the thoughts that I think toward you. Thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jer. 29:11). Bring your friends and come hear the good things that God says about you as well as the future of mankind and the earth. There is hope for every situation. 2460015-02

It may go down as the shortest recruiting process of all time. It only took Powhatan junior Luke Scherzer two innings to convince Virginia Tech’s coaching staff he was worth a baseball scholarship. Following an eye-popping performance in October at the U-17 Border Battle in Columbia, S.C., Scherzer was offered and accepted a grant to the ACC program. I’m ecstatic; I always wanted to be a Hokie,” said the 6-foot-1, 175-pound righthander. “All my cousins go there and I have a lot of friends there, too.” Due to injuries, Scherzer wasn’t on anyone’s radar – at least as a pitcher – until this past fall. “I really didn’t have any looks until I went to South Carolina,” he said. “It all happened so fast … I was about the only player there with no national ranking.”

Walters fulfills goal by signing with Radford By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer

In her mind, there could be no better ending to her stellar softball career at Powhatan High School. “It’s always been my goal, my dream to get a commitment from a D-1 school,” said Rachael Walters of the scholarship tender by Radford

University. “I’ve had a lot of good memories at Powhatan and this is the one I’m most proud of.” The versatile left-handed pitcher has a repertoire of six pitches: fastball, rise, curve, screwball, drop and changeup. “The screwball is my best

Walters: Powhatan softball standout signs with Radford Continued from 1B pitch. It breaks on the outside corner for righthanded batters and is very effective,” Walters added. In her first three years of years of varsity competition, Walters piled up 44 wins against only four losses. Her earned-run average over that span was a stingy 0.44, good enough to earn 2011 Region I Pitcher of the Year honors, as well as Group AA first ream All-State and two All-Metro first team selections. Her senior season should certainly add to those accolades. Walters describes herself as “very competitive, determined and a hard worker,” but admits she does not present the most hardened presence on the mound. “I’m very focused, but probably appear kind of laid-back on the mound,” she added. “I need to work on my demeanor; try to be more intimidating.” This may be a difficult image for her to achieve as, conversely, she hopes her classmates will remember her for being “humble and a good person.” Although Walters fully understands she will have to earn her spot in the rotation of the Highlanders’ prestigious program, the fact that she will be the only lefthander on the squad might very well speed up her advancement.

“That can help out a lot,” she said. Already focused on her goals after college, Walters will concentrate on business courses at Radford. “I want to open my own salon and dayspa,” she said. She will graduate from PHS having already earned her cosmetology license. Powhatan softball coach Marie Crump credits Walters for being “a very talented young lady who has played a major role in the success of our softball program.” “She has worked very hard to develop as a softball player and now has a great opportunity to continue her education and be a part of an excellent college softball program. We are very proud of her accomplishments thus far,” Crump added. Richmond Storm head coach Bob Hansen has mentored Walters in summer league softball for the “past four or five years,” and presented a broader view of Rachael’s talents and abilities. “We’ve been lucky to have her. She’s been our go-to pitcher and on the mound she is unflappable. No matter what happens she never gets rattled,” he said. “Plus she’s a very good hitter, contributing both offensively and defensively.”

Scherzer: Junior signs with Va. Tech Continued from 1B As both a freshman and sophomore, Scherzer sparkled with the bat and glove, but had hurled little due to wrist and back ailments. This past spring, Scherzer made AllSouthside District utility on the strength of a .508 batting average, with six homers, 11 doubles and 38 runs batted in. “Luke is a hard worker with a lot of talent,” said Indians coach Gregg Conner. “He’s played a little bit of everywhere around the infield, except for pitching.” As a sophomore, he was limited to six frames on this mound. He was 1-0 with eight strikeouts and a 0.00 earned run average. Scherzer suited up last summer for the Virginia Cardinals exposure team under coach Rich Graham, but rarely pitched until Columbia. As a late fill-in, he was selected to play for Team Virginia in the October tournament at South Carolina that drew hordes of Division I scouts. “He was the last player chosen,” said Graham. “I got a call saying they needed another pitcher. I called Luke on a Wednesday and he was in Columbia Friday. “That’s what I call taking advantage of an opportunity … it was the last tournament of the year.” Scherzer’s takenotice, two-inning stint

was at the expense of Team North Carolina. In relief, Scherzer fired two shutout frames with five strikeouts, and struck 88 miles an hour on the radar gun. “I got into a zone,” he explained. Virginia Tech head coach Pete Hughes and assistant Patrick Mason were among those taking notes. “The way it works, because of my age, they weren’t allowed to approach me,” Scherzer explained. “Coach Graham (who helped put together Team Virginia) asked me to call them … when I did, they offered the scholarship and I took it.” Host South Carolina, the NCAA champ, also

offered Scherzer a scholarship following the command performance, but Tech was his first love. Scherzer still has two more seasons at Powhatan and will help usher Indians’ baseball into the more challenging Jefferson District in spring. “Luke throws hard,” said Conner. “We’re counting on him.” The younger brother of former Indians pitcher Sam Scherzer, Luke becomes the second PHS junior to commit to an ACC school. Centerfielder Tyler Allen has already accepted an offer from Virginia. Allen hit .614 with 6 homers and 16 stolen bases last spring.

BSH senior Augie Conte has tremendous agility for a player his size.

Conte: Late bloomer loves football Continued from 1B of blocking out the sun. Until that point, neither Conte nor his parents had ever considered the possibility that he could play football in college. Recognizing that kids his size don’t exactly grow on trees, they knew if he was to have a shot at playing even on the Division III level, he’d have to find a traditional school that had credibility with college recruiters. The Contes looked at several schools around Richmond: Trinity, Collegiate, Benedictine and St. Christopher’s. All offered strong academics and quality athletic programs, but Conte never felt comfortable in a “rich, preppy environment. It was different at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. It was a private school and students paid tuition to attend, but without the “snotty attitude Conte had found elsewhere. “There’s just a lot of good old country boys here, he said. Good football, too. Under coach Mike Henderson, BSH had won two Virginia Independent Schools state championships and reached the state final before falling to North Cross in 2008. Henderson and his staff also had a proven record of preparing kids to play college football, having sent Kyle Jolly to North Carolina and Mike Allen to JMU, among others.

Conte was still extremely raw when he arrived at BSH. But he started all 12 games at tackle for the undefeated state champion Knights as a junior and earned first-team all-state honors in VIS Division 4. At 6-6 and 270 pounds, Conte certainly is hard to miss. And despite his lack of experience, his background in lacrosse provided surprising agility and athleticism for a player his size. Eventually, college coaches began to take notice. Old Dominion, a fledgling Division I-AA program, was the first to offer Conte a scholarship last spring. He earned another after a strong performance at Maryland’s recruiting camp. Virginia had been Conte’s favorite all along. His mother attended U.Va. and his father grew up in Charlottesville. But Conte had a subpar performance at the Cavaliers’ one-day camp in June and the coaching staff decided not to offer him. It was a different story at Virginia Tech, where Conte ran the fastest time of any lineman in the 40-yard dash and left campus with a scholarship offer from a perennial national top-20 program. When word got out that Tech had offered, Virginia’s staff followed suit. Conte soon found himself in a place he never imagined he’d be – smack in the middle of a

tug-of-war between the commonwealth’s fiercest college football rivals. Tech fans tried to convince him to commit to the Hokies. U.Va. fans said he’d be better off as a Cavalier. “I had to ask myself what was in my best interests, not anybody else’s, Conte said. The choice was Virginia Tech. “I really liked the coaching staff and you could tell their program was a lot more mature than Virginia’s, Conte said. “I felt like I fit in [at Tech] and could call that place home. Conte, the Hokies’ second offensive line recruit in the Class of 2012, knows he still has a long way to go before he’s capable of playing major Division I football. He’s picked up tips on technique and footwork from Jolly, who started on the offensive line at North Carolina and earned a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad last season as an undrafted free agent. He also trains with noted speed coach Reed Kagan at Sports Performance Plus in Richmond, trying to improve his agility so he can block bigger, stronger opponents on the next level. Conte is leaning toward taking a prep year at Fork Union Military Academy to get stronger and gain experience before enrolling at Tech in summer 2013. “I’m learning something new pretty much every day, Conte said. “Going through the recruiting process and having colleges wanting you is a cool feeling, but right now I’m a large fish in a medium-sized pond. Basically just mauling people, which is my style now, isn’t going to work in college. “There’s always going to be somebody better than you. I realize I’m going to have to work as hard, if not harder than I do now to succeed. That’s not a problem for Conte, who believes his late start in football is a major reason why he still loves everything about the sport. “The reason why you play football is having fun, he said. “As soon as that goes away, you’re wasting your time.
