Residents may join search for county admin

For county icon, a fond farewell

Committee could include county department heads, school employees By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As the search for Powhatan’s next county administrator continued last week, the committee charged with the task of finding qualified candidates was working to figure out its own next steps. According to District 5 Supervisor Carson Tucker, the group still had to discuss “how wide to throw the net” in a search for candidates, as well as “the matrices we are going to use” to whittle down the Tucker list of applicants. Perhaps as important as anything, “we need to define crisply what it is we are long Moore for,” said Tucker, who joins District 1 Supervisor David Williams and Fire Chief Rick Bucher, the community representative, on the committee. Before even beginning the work of finding a new administrator, supervisors had to agree on who would make up the committee. District 2 Supervisor Billy Melton’s suggestion to include a community representative was initially met with skepticism by some board members, but District 2’s Jason Moore said last week that he supports bringing in additional members at some point in the process. “I do not support citizen work groups,” said Moore in an e-mail sent January 17, “but in this case I think it would be a

y 2:45 last Saturday, there were few parking spaces to be found in the lot at Powhatan Community Church. Despite bitter temperatures and an unrelenting icy drizzle outside, residents continued filing into the church, filling row upon row.

They were there to honor former Powhatan County Supervisor Bob Cosby, and honor him they did. Among those in attendance were family members and close friends, as well as a Senator, a Delegate, and the entire choir of Little Zion Baptist church. Former and current county supervisors praised him for his dedicated service and a parade of young children regaled him with poems and songs. Governor Bob McDonnell sent his congratulations via a taped video message, as did Congressman Randy Forbes and Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling. Cosby, who officially retired from the board on Dec. 31, 2011 after 40 years of service, was even pulled up on stage to sing a song with several former classmates from the Powhatan High School class of 1955. Offering his thoughts on Cosby’s tenure, Senator John Watkins echoed what many in the community have been saying to Cosby since he announced last year that he would retire. “It has been a honor and a privilege to work with someone whose name is synonymous with Powhatan County,” said Watkins, a Powhatan resident himself. “Thank you for your service, thank you for your time, and thank you for your dedication to the people of Powhatan County.” — Roslyn Ryan

VDOT seeking public comment on two projects Until January 31st the Virginia Department of Transportation is accepting public comment on two proposed roadway improvement projects in Powhatan County. One of the proposed projects is the replacement of the Route 609 Bridge over the Appomattox River on the Powhatan/Amelia line. The other project is the improvement of the intersection of Route 711 (Huguenot Trail) and Route 616 (Pleasants Road); the improvement project entails widening a portion of Huguenot Trail, leveling the land to create better sight distance, and adding left and right-hand turn lanes from 711

onto 616. Janet Hedrick, project manager for the Huguenot Trail improvement project, said that VDOT was prompted to look into improving the intersection after receiving a call from a police deputy, who said the intersection was unsafe. A VDOT accident history report shows that the intersection has seen three accidents in the last three years, though none were fatal or involved injuries. Hedrick said that construction on this project is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2014 and would continue until August of the same

year. Due to heavy traffic both roads would remain open during construction and no detours would be made. John A. Kennedy, project manager for the Route 609 bridge replacement, said that the proposed replacement bridge would be located slightly to the west of the existing bridge, allowing the existing bridge to remain in use during construction. “The only calls I’ve received on this project so far,” Kennedy said, “were from truckers seeing if we were going to close the road or not. And they were happy that we’re not.” — Emily Darrell

while steaming to Europe on a British mail packet. Former Senators John Siddel of Louisiana and James Mason of Virginia ran the Federal blockade to Cuba. Mason is the grandson of George Mason who is often referred to as the “Father of the Bill of Rights” to the United States Constitution. Siddel is a New York transplant to Louisiana. Siddel’s brother-inlaw was Commodore Matthew C. Perry, the American naval commander who opened Japan to U.S. trade. Commodore Perry’s flag ship, during his cruise to Japan was the side-wheeled frigate USS POWHATAN. In Cuba, the ambassadors boarded the British ship TRENT for the final leg of their journey to Europe. A United States frigate, USS SAN JACINTO, intercepted the TRENT and arrested the ambassadors. The British responded by placing an embargo on all Union commerce and sending two warships to its dominions in Canada in case of hostilities. The British have also decided to send 11,000 troops to Canada if case hostilities between the Union and British begin. It is hoped that these actions foreshadow a British decision to formally recognize the Confederacy and provide material support to our nation. Britain is the most powerful nation on earth. Britain’s naval forces will easily break the blockade allowing commerce to flow between Europe and the Confederacy. British loans, arms and ships will tip the balance of this war in our favor, and guarantee us our independence.

She is also a freelance photographer. Larry is a Funeral Service professional and is a graduate of Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. The couple met while serving in their profession at a funeral home in Richmond. A December wedding is planned.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Dockery named Beaumont’s new superintendant Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center, located in northern Powhatan County, has ended its search for a new superintendent. The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice chose Charles Dockery to replace Michael Ito, who resigned in September after serving six years in the role. It is unknown whether Ito’s resignation was forced or voluntary. Dockery had served as interim superintendent since Ito’s resignation and, according to VDJJ spokesperson Robin Farmer, has worked in Virginia’s juvenile justice system for more than 31 years. Dockery officially became the new superintendent on Christmas Day. Beaumont Correctional Center, located off Route 522 at the Powhatan/Goochland line, houses approximately 240 male offenders between the ages of 15 and 21. —Emily Darrell

bills will not go out as frequently as before, but we could possibly be borrowing money once again to cover payroll and debt owed to our vendors.” Some departments, on the other hand, were able to present three to five percent reduction scenarios, mostly by slashing operating costs such as employee travel and office supplies. Brandon Stidham, head of Planning and Community Development, suggested eliminating his department’s travel budget altogether and also suggested a reduction to his own salary. Commonwealth Attorney Bob Beasley, suggested a furlough (unpaid vacation time) for his department of four, feeling this to

be a more desirable option than reducing salaries or cutting personnel. Beasley said that not only would it allow his staff to have a little more time off, it would also allow their salaries to remain the same on paper, benefitting them if and when the economy improves and departmental raises are once again an option. “If I can achieve the same savings through a furlough,” Beasley said in a telephone interview, “I would rather do it that way. No one has gotten a raise in several years. I’m going to at least give them some time off,” Beasley said. “I just feel that’s a fairer way to do it.”

Last day to register for GOP primary Feb. 13 A FAN FAVORITE Staff Writer

If you wish to vote in Virginia’s Republican presidential primary to be held March 6 and are not registered to vote, the last day to do so is Monday, February 13, said Powhatan County Registrar Inez Poe. There will be two candidates on the ballot – former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 14th District. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who won last week’s primary in South Carolina, did not gather enough signatures to appear on Virginia’s ballot.

Both Romney and Paul have sought the Republican nomination in the past. Romney won several primaries and caucuses in the 2008 race before eventually losing the nomination to John McCain. Paul also campaigned for the Republican nomination in 2008 and ran on the Libertarian ticket in the 1988 presidential race. Romney at first appeared to be the obvious front-runner, having captured both the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary. However, the South Carolina primary – in which Gingrich garnered a whopping 40 percent of votes to Romney’s 27 percent –has long-been thought to be particularly influential, as every candidate who has won the state’s GOP

primary since 1980 has gone on to secure the presidential nomination. Virginia is part of “Super Tuesday,” a day when nine other states – including Alaska, Tennessee, and Ohio – will hold their primaries. Virginia is also an “open primary” state, which means that voters do not need a party affiliation to vote for a partisan candidate. Absentee voting for the primary has already begun, Poe said. You may vote absentee in the registrar’s office or apply for an absentee ballot by mail. If you have any questions about where or when to vote or how to register please contact the registrar’s office at (804) 598-5604.

Challenge urges participants to make small changes SSHW was built around a framework of 25 research-based behavior change strategies. The Challenge was originally developed in a “paper and pencil” format with printed worksheets and is now available online. It has been well documented that, when people monitor their behavior and measure their how they’re doing, they are often inspired to do better and achieve positive results. Participants in a SSHW Challenge are “on their honor” to report their activities accurately. If they “cheat” on reporting their points, they are only cheating themselves by not following the recommended daily practices. The SSHW Challenge is based on the performance of ten recommended practices on a daily basis: five that involve health and nutrition and five that involve financial management. Ten points are given for performing each one for a maximum of 700 points per week and 4,200 points for the entire challenge. “The Challenge is a great way to convert ambitious New Year’s resolutions, like losing weight and saving money, into daily

action steps,” notes Dr. Barbara O’Neill, Extension Specialist in Financial Resource Management for Rutgers Cooperative Extension. The five daily health and nutrition practices are: eat at least 4 cups of fruits and vegetables; get at least 30 minutes of physical activity; drink water or unsweetened beverages instead of sugar-sweetened beverages; eat at least two servings of whole grain foods; and learn something new about health and nutrition. The five daily financial management practices included in the SSHW Challenge are: save a $1 bill (or more) and/or pocket change; invest $5 or more per day (including automated retirement savings plan deposits); track money spent throughout the day; eat lunch prepared at home; and learn something new about personal finance. The latter activity, for both health and personal finances, can be accomplished by visiting Web sites, attending seminars, or by reading, listening to, or viewing media reports. Winter 2012 SSHW Challenge participants will have an opportunity to replace one daily health activity and one daily personal finance activity with unique daily personal challenges of their own. “Providing some adaptation of the

traditional SSHW Challenge format will make the Challenge more “personal” for participants and give them an opportunity to practice new behaviors if they are already doing all of the 10 pre-selected activities,” explained Dr. O’Neill. As participants enter their personal data, they will see their point totals for each day of the week and for each of the ten activities described above. They’ll also see a bar graph that compares their personal progress to the average scores of everyone else participating in the Challenge. Daily motivational messages will also be provided to participants. Paper tracking forms can be downloaded to keep track of daily activities until they are entered online. Doing even one of the ten recommended daily practices is a great way to get started on the path to better health and improved financial security. The more SSHW Challenge activities that are performed by participants, the better. To sign up for “Winter 2012 SSHW Challenge” visit the Rutgers SSHW Web site at http://njaes.rutgers. edu/sshw/. Every time you turn around, there’s a new diet program. And it’s better than all the rest, sure to help you slim down in record time. Put that new one in a pile with the gazillions of previous plans — each with their promise of a “new you” — and you have a glut of good ideas that tend to overwhelm even the most well-meaning researcher. So what are you going to try in 2012? Where should you start? How can you make this the year you take the weight off and keep it off? First, you need to determine how much you need to lose, said Madge Zacharias, a pediatrician and founder of the Zacharias Ganey Health Institute in Richmond. “If it’s less than 10 percent of your body weight, there are lots of options,” Zacharias said. You might be able to achieve your ideal weight by simply exercising more, cutting out desserts or eating more lean proteins. For greater weight-loss goals, though, the work gets tougher. What you don’t want is a short-term diet program that promises grand results. “I strongly feel that quick fixes fail,” Zacharias said. Weight that’s lost rapidly is generally difficult to keep off, so the dieter ends up returning to that same spot on the scale a few months later. Jeffrey Sicat, an endocrinologist and director of Virginia Weight & Wellness, agreed. “A lot of weight loss fast is sort of exciting and sexy … but chances are, it’s not going to work” in the long run. What is required is lifestyle changes that take the weight off gradually and keep it off for good. “It’s all about what is right for you,” Sicat said. “There’s no cookie cutter.” Zacharias added that education is part of the process. “It’s learning what a 200- to 500calorie meal looks like,” she said. It’s also accepting the necessity of daily activity. Today’s sedentary lifestyles, coupled with the plethora of easy-to-grab processed foods, are making it nearly impossible to avoid weight gain. “That combination really gets us in trouble,” Zacharias said. Some people think the recommended 10,000 steps a day sounds preposterous. “That’s one hour and 20 minutes of walking a day,” Zacharias said. “If we’re not getting that, we’re not being normal.” Bodies are meant to move. Exercise alone, however, won’t guarantee weight loss. A good diet will combine exercise and nutrition. “Who cares if it takes a year or two?” Zacharias said. “If you’re doing something that shows progress, it can be a good thing to take a long time.” Weight is a huge concern in central Virginia as well as the rest of this fastfood-loving nation. In the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area, 60 percent of the population is overweight and 30 percent is categorically obese, Sicat said. “The numbers are staggering.” — Maria Howard

Book celebrates county cooking Fried Green Tomatoes? Avocado Cream Pie? Powhatan residents dish up their best recipes in “A Taste of Powhatan” By Ruth Doumlele Contributing Writer

“I make Beer Bread for Jim while he is out of the house because I don’t want him to know how easy it is,” says Pat Meek. Her recipe and other treasures, such as Aunt Betty’s Spinach Balls, Mama’s Fried Chicken, and Grammy’s Molasses and Oatmeal Cook-

ies, are in “A Taste of Powhatan,” the cookbook recently published by the Michaux-St. James Foundation. Recipes vary in ease and complexity, from five-year-old Miller Dunn’s frozen bananas to Sara Corbett’s Pepper Crusted Filet Mignon. “A Taste of Powhatan” is a community cookbook representative of Powhatan’s people, preserving a lifestyle, the past, or sharing good company with neighbors. The Michaux-St. James Foundation cookbook committee, headed by Lee Tetrault and including Becky Lillywhite, Pat Meek, Sara Corbett, Mary Jane Stokes, and Martha O’Hare, mined the treasures of numerous Powhatan kitchens, from Ballsville to Rabbit Ridge, from Eastern Powhatan to Belona. ing community flavors, various sections include temptations in Appomattox Appetizers, Huguenot Holidays, and Pocahontas Pastries. Anecdotes abound as contributors relate stories behind their recipes. Joyce Gills tells of putting bananas for banana bread in the same freezer with her son’s frozen snake for his Powhatan Middle School teacher, a herpetologist. A problem arose when he accidentally took frozen bananas to school for a program on snakes! Elizabeth Gills contributed Pig Pickin’ Cake, many of which graced her grandpa’s flatbed truck along with other side dishes at family pig roasts. Martha O’Hare forwarded a YouTube video demonstration from the Iowa Potato Industry, “just when you thought you knew everything about peeling potatoes.” The video was converted to text for the cookbook. Becky Lillywhite, who operated Becky’s Tea Cafe on Anderson Highway several years ago, shared the recipe for her best selling soup, “easy and fast.” Chicken Stew see Book page 9A

As ‘fireworks’ subside, a new spirit of cooperation?

By Roslyn Ryan Editor You may reach Roslyn at editor@powhatantoday.com

I couldn’t help but shake my head the other day, when a good friend from Cumberland began telling me about some of the “fireworks” at that county’s first supervisors meeting of the year. “You just wouldn’t believe it,” she said. Yes, I replied. I just might. Few could deny that the first few weeks of the New Year were filled with more political turmoil than most of us would have preferred. Fewer still would say that the county as a whole is not ready to move forward and get down to solving problems. It would seem, thankfully, that

perhaps this is really what’s happening. While I did not sit in on every session of the budget workshop last week, the mood in the room during the ones I did attend seemed different than it has in recent weeks. Making budget decisions in times like these is tricky at best; at worst, it’s a battle that leaves even the “winners” feeling battered and bloodied. But there seemed to be a burgeoning spirit of cooperation among the board members last Wednesday afternoon, and a willingness to work together with county employees and each other to

help find workable solutions. I can’t deny it: it was a very nice thing to see. Sure there will still be fireworks from time to time—we don’t elect people because we think they won’t stand up for what they believe. And sometimes that means the metaphorical nose or two gets bloodied. But once our elected officials learn to work together and handle disagreements civilly, leaving malice and egocentricity out of the equation, that’s when the real work of the county can begin.

Dear Editor, Okay, alright, enough already! Mrs. Bishop’s fate has been decided. Along with many others, I advocated for her to stay in her position. But it is done! Looking forward, I feel the first thing we need for the good of our county, is to stop the finger pointing, stop blaming others from the past, stop name calling and insults. We cannot go back and change history. The second is to remain civil with each other and respect each other’s opinions. These are the easy things to do. Many of the citizens do not trust some of the BOS, and they in turn seem uncomfortable with many of the citizens of our great county. We, the citizens and the BOS, must put this behind us and move FORWARD! How do we do this? Citizens, if you really care about the county and which direction it is going, don’t just sit back and complain. Do something! It is good to write an occasional comment on a newspaper thread or a comment on social media. These are excellent ways to make your opinions known. Please do not stop! But to make a difference, we all have to get involved, really involved with OUR county. Engage your neighbors, friends, coworkers, etc., in open dialogues and share information about what is going in our county. Attend the Board of Supervisors, School Board, and Planning Commission meetings. For easy access to calendars, agendas and videos of prior meetings, go to www.powhatanva.gov . Discover what is really happening with OUR government. Feel free to contact your district’s supervisor or another appropriate person in the county government. We, the citizens, need to make our government and BOS accountable and their actions transparent. But it is most important to let our BOS and government know what our citizen’s position is! BOS, we ask you to get to know our government, its employees, its facilities, policies, procedures, bylaws, our Volunteer Fire/EMT Departments and its volunteers, etc. To become involved with some of our great events and organizations and get a better feel for the people of the county and their activities/passions that are separate from the government. Please communicate and listen to your citizens. There is much wisdom and knowledge out in the county for us all to learn from. Remember, if we have an open mind, there is much to learn and to grow from this. We the citizens, the county government, and the BOS must work together to arrive at good solutions for all issues facing our county. We know that 2013 will be a challenging year for our county. We need to have all the facts, including what our state funding will be 2013, and examining all budgets and revenue streams of the county to make sure they are accurate. It is too easy to misrepresent numbers and distort dates to fit a particular agenda. Please don’t let that happen. Let’s have the whole picture, with all the correct facts by all parties, and then we, the citizens, government, and the BOS can all work together to find common ground to arrive at good solutions. A new Face Book page called “Citizens of Powhatan for Responsible Government” is being started. (If you have see Letter page 11A

A kind word can work wonders By Scott Hollifield Media General News Service

We both knew I was no pretty man. But the cashier and I laughed at her assertion, and my day got immeasurably better. It’s amazing what a grin and a kind word can do. Eleven hours earlier, my day began with a crash and a loud, “No!” My eyelids flew open like cartoon window shades, my teeth already gritting in anticipation of what I would find. Mornings are often filled with the sounds of angst – booms, thuds, “Where’s my shoes?” “Hurry up, you’re going to be late for school” – but this was the unmistakable 6:30 a.m. reverberation of something breaking on the bathroom floor. There’s a certain echo that differs from something breaking later in the day in the kitchen or living room. The teen had knocked over her fancy lighted makeup mirror, a Christmas present from her grandparents, and the mirror reacted as mirrors do when they meet tile floors at a certain velocity. This came only days after she dropped her iPod, a Christmas present from the wife and me, onto the cement floor of the garage and the iPod reacted as iPods do when they meet cement floors at a certain velocity. I reacted with typical restraint and understanding. “What the #$%? Are you systematically trying to destroy every-#$%thing you got for Christmas? No one takes care of anything in this house …” During my rant, I covered most of the perceived shortcomings of the rest of the family’s effort to craft my notion of the perfect TV household, which includes much less breaking, much more baking and a dog that fetches my slippers instead of soiling my boots. It was not a good morning. It didn’t get any better. Work was filled with computer problems, vicious e-mails, threatening phone calls, weird smells from the break room, and people who simply refused to recognize me for the visionary I am. As the misery piled up and the ugliness contin-

ued, I began to reflect on my actions of that morning and the unkind words that flowed from the pater familias. Maybe I was a little harsh on the home crowd. The kid may break things, but she’s kindhearted and a worthy “Jeopardy” opponent. The wife doesn’t bake many cookies, but she can kick up sawdust on a honkytonk dance floor, and I’ll take that over chocolate chips most days. Upon further reflection, maybe I was a lot harsh. Saddled with guilt, I rode over to the big-box store to search for a replacement fancy lighted makeup mirror, which I planned to present as a peace offering. This proved difficult to locate, since I rarely venture into aisles where fancy lighted makeup mirrors are found. I asked a clerk. “Hey, pardner, where’s your fancy lighted makeup mirrors?” He smirked. “Try the makeup section.” Mr. Smirky Pants knew his stuff. I picked up a large pink box from the “home vanity collection” and headed for self-checkout, hoping to avoid anymore smirks or judgmental glances at my purchase. There were no selfcheckouts. Instead, my big pink box and I came face to face with a cashier. She was a young, short-haired woman with tattoos on her forearms. I looked at her. She looked at me. We both looked at the box. She looked back at me and grinned. I realized it was the first smile I had seen all day, and that was mostly my fault. “You’re an awfully pretty man,” she said. “You’ll get a lot of use out of something like this.” “Wore the first one out,” I said. We both laughed. I realized it was the first laugh I had had all day. I headed home. I owed some folks a grin and a kind word or two. It’s amazing what they can do. AQUARIUS Jan 21/Feb 18

PISCES Feb 19/Mar 20

Capricorn, the next challenge on your list is a big one. But if there is anyone who can handle the pressure it is you. Don’t be afraid to call on friends if you need them.

Get out into the world and try a few new things, Aquarius. Your social energy and curiosity are peaking this week, and you need new experiences to feel satisfied.

Your finances need an overhaul, Pisces. This could mean taking a new job or expanding what you’re doing to earn more.

ARIES Mar 21/Apr 20

TAURUS Apr 21/May 21

GEMINI May 22/Jun 21

Aries, put aside any selfish thoughts and give any and all tasks your utmost energy today. Energy is better spent on others, so keep this in mind when you get busy.

CANCER Jun 22/Jul 22

Your partner is the most important person in your life right now, Cancer. So much so that this week every bit of your attention will be devoted his or her way.

Taurus, your coworkers are all excited and fussing over something that is evidently a bigger deal to them than it is to you. Don’t try to rain on their parade.

Leo, money is burning a hole in your pocket, so you may want to go on a spending spree. Keep in mind that there are a few bigticket purchases waiting in the wings.

LEO Jul 23/Aug 23

Gemini, your love life is in a really good place this week, which enables you to spend some quality time with the one you love. A romantic dinner sounds like the ticket.

Virgo, you don’t always have to be decisive. Sometimes you can kick back and let someone else call the shots for a VIRGO Aug 24/Sept 22 change. This is a great way to recharge your batteries.

LIBRA Sept 23/Oct 23

SCORPIO Oct 24/Nov 22

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23/Dec 21

A few tasks need to get done, Libra. But afterward you should have enough time for some social interaction, whether that be a party or simply a movie night out.

It’s time to be a bit introspective, Scorpio. Think about the things you want instead of what other people want. It’s alright to be a little selfish once in a while.

Sagittarius, you’re having fun this week and so are all the other people around you simply for being in your presence. This situation will continue in the days ahead.

Scrappy Knights fall to Bearcats

BOYS HOOPS: W. ALBEMARLE 63, PHS 53

By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer

Trailing by 15 points with just 3:37 left in the game, the Indians closed within 59-53 on Trevon Taylor’s 3pointer. Western Albemarle made sure the home team didn’t get its storybook ending by hitting four free throws to close out a 63-53 victory, but Powhatan’s young squad made a statement with its spirited, determined effort. “We definitely got outhustled,” Maynard said. “I give Powhatan a lot of credit. They played very hard and very well.” None of the Indians were better than Joey Balcom. The freshman point guard

Pregame drills last Tuesday evening revealed the obvious strength of the visiting Banner Christian boys basketball team. The Bearcats were loaded with speed and quickness in the backcourt and appeared primed to literally run the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights off the court. The Knights’ short rotation has been consistently vulnerable to being worn down in the late going, and the Bearcats’ Jerron Athey and TJ Payne had the speed of jackrabbits necessary to make that happen. But for almost three and a half periods, and behind a career day for Ethan Sill, the Knights kept pace with the running Bearcats and led 4847 over a team ranked No. 2 in Virginia Independent Schools Division 3. “We were playing well,” BSH coach Ben Pomeroy said. “Then in the blink of an eye we were down five or six points.” That “blink of an eye” was a 3-pointer from Athey with only 4:03 left in the contest. Payne followed with a drive to the rim, then converted a Knights’ turnover to a run-out to build Banner’s six-point lead. Assists from both Athey and Payne stretched that lead to 10 and, despite two field goals from Sill, a Bearcat parade to the foul line pre-

Powhatan’s Tyler Allen pulls up for two points.

PHS: Determined boys earn respect in defeat Continued from 1B led Powhatan with 14 points and showed the toughness of a veteran by repeatedly penetrating the paint and scoring over the Warriors’ tall front line. “I don’t think they thought we’d come out as strong as we did,” Balcom said. “Confidence is everything. No matter who you’re playing, if you believe you can compete, you can play well.” “We’re O-fer in the district, so everybody looks at us as little guys, but we have a lot of fight in this team,” added Allen, who returned after missing a couple games with a concussion and finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Chris Deleon added nine points before fouling out and Taylor stepped up when the Indians were struggling to score, tallying all seven of his points in the final 2:48. “We tell the kids they have to earn the other team’s respect by playing hard,” Powhatan coach Steve Washburn said. “We can’t afford to take a night off because we don’t have any margin for error. We have to be perfect.” Chase Stokes scored a game-high 16 points and led Western Albemarle players in double figures. Ben Turner and Parker Morris added 12 apiece and Brett Engle chipped in 10 as the Warriors repeatedly answered Powhatan’s second-half challenges. The Indians got within a point on Bal-

com’s three-point play early in the third quarter and trailed by two after Ben Gerow swished a 3pointer later in the period. Engle hit two free throws on the other end, sparking the Warriors on a 17-4 run that prompted Washburn to call timeout with Powhatan trailing 58-43 and only 3:38 left in the game. “We finally matched their energy in the second half,” said Maynard, who acknowledged his players may have taken the Indians too lightly. “We still did some dumb things, but at least we got our effort up where theirs was.” Powhatan answered Western Albemarle’s run with one of its own. Drew Ratliff started it with a 3-pointer and Taylor ripped off seven quick points in a 10-1 surge that brought the Indians back within six at 59-53. But the fundamentally sound Warriors hit 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch and Powhatan didn’t score again. “I like the way this team is coming together,” Washburn said. “Every day they come to practice and want to get better. They work hard and we can see progress being made. “Now it’s about consistency, building on this performance and continuing to improve.” The Indians play their final home game of the 2011-12 regular season Friday against Louisa before closing with road trips to Charlottesville, Midlothian, Fluvanna and Western Albemarle.

Powhatan has hardly struggled so far this season. The Indians opened with a 61-29 rout of Goochland and won their first five games before falling to the host team in the finals of the Patrick Henry Christmas tournament. They picked up right where they left off with lopsided wins over Prince Edward (61-31), Louisa (53-35) and Goochland (63-28). Only three of Powhatan’s 12 victories have come by less than 10 points – and one of those was a nine-point win at Group AAA Midlothian in which the Indians played without Berry. Freshman Montiera Johnson made her first varsity start against the Trojans and scored 15 points, while classmate Timesha Morris led the way with 19. “They’ve played a lot of basketball and they’ve seen tough competition [in AAU],” Bowman said. “They still have a lot to learn. But if they make a mistake, it doesn’t bother them. You can get on them and they handle it like veterans.” The two baby-faced ninth-graders give Bowman the luxury of having five legitimate scoring threats – Livermon, Morris, Johnson and the two Berrys -- on the court at the same time. Not only have they capably dealt with the pressure of starting for a team with district championship aspirations, they’ve blended in seamlessly with their more experienced teammates. “We knew them already, so it wasn’t that hard for us to get close. It just clicked,” said

forward Britney Berry, one of five seniors on the Powhatan roster. Asked if she and assistant coaches Jasmine Young and Candy Daniels have faced any drama from having two freshmen playing so many key minutes, Bowman just laughed. “Any time you’re dealing with a bunch of teenage girls, there’s going to be drama,” she added. “But this is an unselfish bunch. They enjoy playing with each other and it always helps when you win.” Looking for ways to keep her players motivated over the course of a long season, Bowman identified four team goals that go beyond winning any individual game: * Outrebound the opponent * Win three of the

four quarters * Turn the ball over 15 times or fewer * Shoot 80 percent or better from the free throw line Despite all of its success this season, Powhatan didn’t reach all four goals in the same game for the first time until its 41-13 rout of Fluvanna on Jan. 13. Last Wednesday, the coaching staff rewarded their players with a postpractice pizza party. “It makes us want to do it all the time,” guard Rachael Shiflett said with a laugh. “We’re hungry girls. We gotta eat.” All jokes aside, the Indians continue to work hard to pursue their goal of a championship in their first year as members of the Jefferson District. Tidewater pounds BSH Contributing Writer

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Geena Landon opened last Thursday night’s contest with Tidewater Academy with a nothing-but-net 3-pointer from the left corner. She then dropped in a short jumper, stole the ball and fed Katie Clarke for a 7-3 lead. The BSH girls led again at 9-7 on another Landon to Clark connection and closed out the quarter with a 13-11 advantage. But Tidewater’s Cary Beahm knocked down a baseline jumper to open the second quarter and the Lady Knights never led again. Landon’s shot deserted her – along with almost all of her teammates – and the Lady Knights could find no answer for Beahm as the visitors steamrolled to a 44-27 Virginia Commonwealth Conference win. The Lady Warriors employed a precision, almost surgical, passing game in their half-court set with virtually every pass ending up in Beahm’s hands. The 6-footer responded with 27 points. By not employing a speed game, Tidewater Academy’s extremely patient half-court offense should have worked to BSH’s advantage. However, the Lady Knights never got their own offense in gear, plus Beahm’s two primary defenders, Clarke and Taylor Thompson, quickly got into foul difficulties; Thompson went to the bench with three fouls with just under five minutes left in the second quarter. BSH coach Sally Lewis went to a box-and -one defense on Beahm, but with Thompson on the bench and Clarke owning two fouls of her own, Lewis was forced to assign the much shorter Landon the job of chasing Beahm. Still, the Lady Knights hung in and were only down three in the final two minutes of the half. But the BSH girls missed two easy scoring opportunities and turned the ball over, allowing the Lady Warriorsto to go to the locker room leading 19-14.

The Lady Warriors appeared so confident that they took no warmups prior to the start of the third quarter. That appeared to be of no consequence as sharp interior passing earned Fallon Williams and Taylor Pruitt a basket apiece for a nine-point Tidewater lead. The Lady Knights went almost three minutes before collecting their initial second-half basket on a power drive by Clarke. Corrine Birriel scored on a steal and run-out to close the gap to five before Beahm and Williams got those four back. Lewis called off the box-and- one, the Lady Knights went to a man-toman and Clarke picked up her third foul before driving for a three-point play to slice Tidewater’s lead to 27-21. With Thompson still on the bench and Clarke’s ability to stay on the court in jeopardy, Beahm had no difficulty stuffing back an offensive rebound for the final points of the third period. Clarke opened the final stanza with a long jumper, but the Lady Warriors went to an old-fashioned weave. Beahm went over Landon for an easy score and Williams got loose for a short jumper. Thompson returned and immediately scored on a turnaround in the lane, but Birriel picked up her fourth foul. Six straight points by Beahm, including both ends of a one and one, saw the Tidewater lead stretched to 12. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights misfired on eight consecutive field-goal tries as the Lady Warriors marched to the freethrow line to extend their lead to the final 42-27. “We just couldn’t make a shot and then didn’t have balanced scoring, Lewis said. Clarke led Blessed Sacrament with 16 points, followed by the five that Landon scored in the first minute and a half. Birriel, normally a double-digit scorer, had only two points and the Lady Knights fifth starter, Kimberly Robben, went scoreless. “We were flat, no energy, Lewis added. “If you just go through the motions during practice, you’ll do it in the game..
