Interim County Administrator visited to assess county departments’ needs By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
After paying a visit to the Company 1 Fire Station last Monday evening – for a sort of meet-and-greet with the volunteers there – Interim County Administrator Elmer Hodge said he left feeling “very impressed.” “My evaluation in the short time that I’ve been here [in Powhatan], is that both the Fire and EMS side of the Powhatan Fire Department is really outstanding,” Hodge said later in a telephone interview. Hodge’s purpose for visiting the station was not only to meet the volunteers, but also to discuss the budget and to determine what the department’s most pressing needs are. “I don’t see where we could cut anything,” District Chief Carroll

Plane makes emergency landing in Powhatan At around 4:45 p.m. last Friday, Powhatan emergency services personnel responded to reports of a small plane down near the intersection of Old Buckingham Road and Route 609. Crews arrived to find a Cessna lodged in a roadside ditch and pilot Mark Witte, 42, unhurt. Witte (pictured above on the phone), a Manassas resident, told rescue workers that he had been forced to make an emergency landing after experiencing engine trouble. According to Powhatan Fire officials, there were initial concerns about a fuel leak from the plane, which typically carries around 40 gallons of fuel. Fire crews were able to neutralize that threat and no other damage to surrounding property was reported.

Recently, former game warden and current Powhatan Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Luxford self-published his first novel, Green Dawg, which International Game Warden Magazine recently called “a joy to read.” The novel follows the exploits of Jake Dupree, a cop who leaves the Northern Virginia rat race to become a game warden in Central Virginia. Hoping to find a more peaceful lifestyle, Dupree instead finds himself in a rocky romance with a woman named Lydia Lightfoot and on the hunt for a serial killer who has been hanging women at local boat landings. Luxford has already written a sequel to Green Dawg called Rivva Dawg, in which the identity of the serial killer is finally revealed. In an interview with Powhatan Today, Luxford made sure to emphasize that while his book contains locations, characters, and situations that may sound familiar to some – Goodland County, Virginia, anyone? – the novel is entirely a work a fiction. Luxford sat down with PT reporter Emily Darrell to discuss the addictiveness of writing, the ways in which being a game warden is like being an airline pilot and how writing a book can

How would you describe your book in 25 words or less? (Laughs.) Well, I tried not to make it a “cop book.” It’s a story about a group of characters who happen to be cops and game wardens. I don’t know, it’s kind of mixed up – there’s some action, some drama, hopefully some comedy. (Laughs.) I guess I have trouble describing exactly what it is, because it’s kind of all over the place.

Fires, even when they don’t take the house, can leave a home devastated. That’s where Stephen Crane comes in. Crane owns the local PuroClean Restoration Professionals, and provides emergency restoration and remediation services. The company recently introduced enhancements to its brand highlighting the compassionate side of property damage cleanup -the important “rescuer” role that PuroClean fulfills in communities by providing comfort and support for property owners during stressful and vulnerable times. “Property owners and insurance agents often view our emergency service technicians like emergency service professionals or firefighters, because we play an important role in protect-
ing communities 24 hours a day,” said Crane. “ The rescue services we offer have earned us a reputation as The Paramedics of Property Damage.” Crane, whose company serves Powhatan and Midlothian, says compassion is key when working with homeowners. “When we are called to the scene of a property disaster such as the aftermath of a fire, or a home that has been flooded, we’re dealing with more than just damaged property. People’s lives are shaken up, some more severely than others. While our services focus on restoring property, our mission focuses on offering comfort and peace of mind as we share our customer’s traumatic experience.” The enhanced PuroClean brand evolved through strategic planning involving

Sisters Amy and Jesse Beers grew up in restaurants. “We were the kids that rolled silverware and fell asleep in a booth when we were tired,” Jesse said of working at her father’s New Hampshire restaurant, The Chowder Mug. The family eventually moved south and Amy went on to manage several different restaurants in the Richmond area – Joe’s Inn in Bon Air, an Applebee’s, and an Outback Steakhouse. Two weeks ago – and a few months ahead of schedule – the pair opened the Creekside Grill in South Creek. When developing their business plan the two knew what they didn’t want: “No more Mexican or Italian,” Amy said. Amy said she based the menu on “everything we drive out of Powhatan for” and describes the cuisine as “American food with a southern flair.” This includes standards like steaks and burgers and less common offerings such as shrimp n’ grits and chicken and waffles. The grill also features a bar area – smoking permitted – complete with happy hour drink specials, a jukebox, a taxidermied moose head the sisters call “Deuce,” and live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

PuroSystems, the company’s national franchise support center, and a network of franchisees from around the country. The new brand position focuses on helping both insurers and property owners understand the important “rescue” role that PuroClean plays in the community by highlighting reliability, responsiveness, professional restoration services, and compassion offered during the most vulnerable and critical moments for property owners. The new branding was rolled out at the PuroSystems annual convention, a gathering of more than 200 PuroClean business owners and team members held August 19-22 in Nashville, TN. The new PuroClean logo, one of the more visual enhancements, was introduced to better convey the caring side of the business. While PuroClean’s previous logo featured a lightening bolt and rising water, implying a service focus limited to weather-related property damage, the new logo features a house and a safety cross --signifying the property rescue element that PuroClean provides in helping property owners cope with more common, every day property losses, such as burst pipes, kitchen appliance fires and over-flowing washing machines. The rescue symbol over the home signifies how PuroClean watches over Powhatan and Midlothian-area homes, as well as the loved ones and sentimental possessions inside of it. The new logo will be featured on all marketing materials, as well as uniforms and newly decaled PuroClean property rescue vans.

You have a full-time job at the sheriff’s office. How did you fit in the time to write? It’s like any hobby – you do it in your spare time. It really became sort of a compulsion. I’d go home at night and instead of sitting and watching TV I’d go in the office and type. Some days I’d sit down and start writing and it’s kind of like getting lost in a video game. All of the sudden I’m squirming and uncomfortable and it dawns on me that I’ve been sitting there for almost four hours and I haven’t eaten lunch.

One last question: why did you choose to publish under B.B. Luxford instead of Brad Luxford? Were you trying to sound more authorly? Yes, exactly right. I kept looking at all these other fiction books and everybody’s just using their initials. I figured ‘What the heck, if that’s the trend.’
Visit: Hodge says fire department ‘as lean as they can be’ Continued from page 1A
Smith said during the meeting in regards to the department’s budget. “We don’t have anything to cut.” Hodge said later that he agrees with this assessment. “They’re really about as lean as they can be,” he said. Hodge said that he believes
the top priorities for the Fire Department are a new fire truck for Company 2 and a new ambulance. “They’re running an ambulance with 200,000 miles on it,” Hodge said. “That’s a lot.” Because the county is currently experiencing a budget shortfall somewhere upwards of four million dollars, Hodge said that in-
creasing the Fire Department’s budget is probably not possible. However, Hodge said that during his tenure as interim administrator he hopes to secure grant money that would allow for the purchase of the needed vehicles. Hodge, who is himself a certified EMT, said “we don’t want to be behind schedule for replacing equipment.”

Commonwealth’s Burn Law in effect until April 30 The Commonwealth’s 4 p.m. Burning Law went into effect Feb. 15, 2012 – the start of spring fire season in Virginia. This law prohibits burning before 4 p.m. each day (Feb. 15 – April 30) if the fire is in, or within 300 feet of, woodland, brushland or fields containing
dry grass or other flammable materials. A violation of this law is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition to the criminal violation, those who allow a fire to escape are liable for the cost of suppressing the fire as well as
any damage caused to others’ property. Burning of leaves, yard waste or trash continues to be the major cause of wildfires in Virginia. These “debris” fires can easily escape unless proper precaution is taken — Contributed report

Sam, At the risk of repeating myself, A good auto tech with a good scan tool is hard to beat. A good scan tool, not a code puller, can read data from the car’s computer and sensors as the computer sees it. A good technician can then analyze this information provided by the scan tool. This will provide much more information than just pulling codes. If I had to make a guess at your problem, it would be a bad primary oxygen 02 sensor. There are two. It sounds like the Idle Air control Valve (IAC) is okay, but just getting a bad signal from one of the two O2 sensors. smoke out of the exhaust and I’ve had to add coolant to the radiator two times. Did my engine get damaged when it overheated? Cheryl Powhatan Cheryl, I’m sorry, but it doesn’t sound good at this point. White smoke is caused by coolant or water that has made it to the combustion chamber and is now coming out of the tail pipe. This is an indication of a couple of different and expensive problems. The head gasket, cylinder head, and block all need to be checked for damage. A blown head gasket would be the best hope right now. Either way, the engine cylinder head would have to be removed to replace the gasket. At this time the cylinder head and block need to be checked for cracks and to see if there is warpage. Cheryl, I’m sorry this repair is not going to be a cheap fix. we need to commission an airport study around here. A quaint but modern (and immaculate) country airport with a snazzily trimmed out lobby and rustic looking granite faced control tower could have come in handy in this case.” — Taken from a comment on the Powhatan Today web site, written about last week’s emergency plane landing on Route 13.
Considering the fact that “This guy had no the pilot mentioned above proper place to land in the walked away without any entire county. Looks like injuries, I couldn’t help but
chuckle when I noticed the above comment on our web site last Friday. (The person who left the post was careful to note, as well, that he was glad the pilot had not been hurt.) The Powhatan Today website has become something of a hot spot in recent weeks, and has served as a forum for residents to sound off on—and in some cases work through—some of the issues the county has been facing. The majority of the comments have been constructive. A few have
been less so. And some, like the one above—well, sometimes you just can’t help but laugh. Personally, I find it hard to fault those who consistently push to make Powhatan a more attractive place to live and work (“granitefaced control towers” notwithstanding). Yes, occasionally the case for aesthetics goes a bit far—in some cases perhaps, the county has sought to gild the lily at the expense of the taxpayers. But there are also those who would seek to forgo anything at all that
INSIDE THE FIRST AMENDMENT
would move the county forward, from public works projects to bringing in amenities that would actually improve the lives of residents. On both sides, to be sure, you could find examples of irrational thinking or just plain folly. There are as many points of view in Powhatan as there are residents. And,while we may not always see eye to eye, if we can at least have a laugh or two over our differences there may be hope for progress after all.
HUMOR
To bridge religious divide, A penny saved, let students engage students a penny spurned By Charles C. Haynes First Amendment Center
I
n a world torn by holy wars and ethnic divides, preparing young people to address differences in faith and belief should be a no-brainer. After all, history teaches that religious intolerance and hate are often rooted in ignorance and fear. That’s why it’s disturbing, if not dangerous, that most schools in the United States and around the globe largely ignore religion, doing little or nothing to help students live in a world where religion and religious differences clearly matter. Fortunately, one foundation – the Tony Blair Faith Foundation – is daring to go where few have gone before by giving students meaningful opportunities to learn from one another about the role of faith and belief in public life. Called “Face to Faith,” the foundation’s schools initiative uses videoconferencing and online community to connect students directly with their peers in classrooms across the world. Launched in 2009, Face to Faith is now in more than 500 schools in 17 countries. (Disclosure: I serve as an adviser to the program in the U.S.) Last week, country-coordinators from participating nations gathered in London to report progress and plan expansion. The good news is that despite barriers – everything from political tensions to lack of technology – many schools are eager to participate. (For more about how the program is working in various countries, visit www.tonyblairfaithfoundation.org.) In some regions of the world, of course, even talking about religions and beliefs can be a risky business. Consider Pakistan, where political turmoil, extremist threats and widespread poverty create daunting conditions for any educational initiative – much less one that involves civil dialogue among people of vastly different faiths and cultures. Nevertheless, the Pakistani coordinator
for Face to Faith, a courageous educator named Danish, has overcome skepticism from some and hostility from others to persuade 31 schools to implement the program – with many more waiting in the wings. Remarkably, given the bitter (often violent) animosity between Pakistan and neighboring India, Danish has worked with Simmi, the Indian coordinator, to link students from schools in both nations. Step one is to prep students in the art of civil discourse, including how to address deep differences without going for the jugular. But once a Face to Faith videoconference begins, the focus is on student voice. Students speak directly with students, giving many of them the first opportunity in their lives to put a human face to the Other. “They get beyond what they have heard from politicians about India as the enemy,” says Danish. “When Pakistani and Indian students participate in a videoconference, they discuss the differences and similarities of different faiths and beliefs – and show respect for each other.” Over the past year, American schools have begun to get involved. At the London meeting, the U.S. coordinator reported that Face to Faith is now active in some 50 public and private schools in 13 states. Students in schools across America have already engaged students in Israel, India, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Pakistan and elsewhere. The potential of Face to Faith for dealing with the challenges of religious diversity has not gone unnoticed by American educators and government officials. Last fall, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined students from Chantilly High School in Fairfax, Va., for a transatlantic videoconference with former Prime Minister Tony Blair and students from the United Arab Emirates. “The United States is changing rapidly,” Duncan said during the exchange. “Young people need to embrace it – not

President Obama wants cheaper pennies. Former U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe wants no pennies. Americans for Common Cents wants us all to appreciate the penny’s importance to the economic well-being of our nation, even if that penny is cemented to a car cup holder with the dried remnants of a spilled Big Gulp. As for me, I want to make some coin off this simmering penny controversy. goods or services, essentially putting the penny out to pasture, did not fare well. And that’s just fine with Americans for Common Sense, a “broad-based coalition of more than 40 organizations dedicated to keeping the penny a part of the nation’s coinage system.” In other words, they love them some pennies. “This legislation is bad for Americans and bad for our money system,” Mark W. Weller, executive director of Americans for Common Cents said of Kolbe’s bill. “Most lawmakers understand that a strong majority of Americans - approximately two-thirds (66%) according to a recent national poll – want to keep the penny.” Clearly, the future of the penny is one of the most pressing issues facing us today, right below global warming and just above zombie apocalypse. As someone once described as “the voice of his generation” by a guy who was two cents short of a 40 dawg at the convenience store, I believe it is my obligation to take a bold stand, pro-penny or anti-penny. And I will, as soon as each side bids on my services as a paid – preferably not in pennies – celebrity spokesperson. Here’s a sample of my pro-penny stance: “Hello, I’m Scott Hollifield, recently voted third-most popu-
per character after Snuffy Smith and the guy who keeps getting arrested for stealing scrap metal. Do you love pennies? Me, too. But President Obama, who has yet to respond to my request to review his birth certificate, wants to change the penny. And former Rep. Jim Kolbe, who may or may not be a vampire, wants to do away with pennies altogether. Join me in the fight to save our precious pennies.” And my anti-penny stance: “Hello, I’m Scott Hollifield, recently voted third sexiest newspaper icon after William Randolph Hearst and Ziggy. Do you hate pennies? Me, too. That’s why I support President Obama’s initiative to change the mix of metals so the coins can be minted more efficiently, perhaps even with a delicious nougaty center. And I, like former Rep. Jim Kolbe, look forward to a day in the not-sodistant future when there are no pennies cemented to my car’s cup holder with the dried remnants of a spilled Big Gulp.” I’m waiting, penny lovers/haters, to make some coin. Again, preferably not pennies. Scott Hollifield is editor/GM of The McDowell News in Marion, NC and a columnist for the Media General News Service. The third time was a charm for Dave Bowers. Bowers, a Powhatan High senior, secured his third berth in the Group AA state wrestling tournament with a top-four finish in his weight class at the Region II championships. But by placing fourth in the region, Bowers assured himself the toughest possible road through the 132-pound bracket last weekend in Salem. Clarke does it all for BSH Versatility is junior’s strength By Jim McConnell Sports Editor
Katie Clarke was 5 years old when she played organized basketball for the first time. It wasn’t exactly love at first dribble. “I ran off the court crying and said ‘I don’t want to play,’” Clarke recalled. Fortunately for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s girls basketball program, that didn’t last long. Clarke started playing after school with a neighbor, scored her first basket in a game and soon found herself hooked on the sport.

Two teams of warriors took the court at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot for the Knights’ final regular-season home game Friday night: the Tidewater Academy Warriors and the six-man squad of overmatched warriors the 2-14 Knights sent out to face the visitors. Despite having significant disadvantages in speed and depth, BSH came up with an inspired effort on Senior Night and had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds of a 47-44 defeat. “They played their best game of the year,” BSH coach Ben Pomeroy said of his squad, which has lost a number of close games this season. Tidewater surged to a 11point lead at 22-11 just minutes into the second quarter. At this point the strategy that all teams use against the undermanned Knights – wear them down physically and get them in foul trouble – failed. Behind the brilliant longdistance shooting of senior Brian Clarke, the host team came back to tie the Warriors at 36 on Clarke’s 3-pointer as time expired in the third period. It appeared that the Warriors’ gazelle-like Lamonte Moore (game high 22 points) had stolen the momentum back with a full-court run-out and dunk to open the final

quarter, but Brandon Waldorf’s soft jumper knotted the score again. Moore answered that by slicing down the lane for a three-point play. His backcourt running mate, B.J. Morris, a game-long defensive thorn in the side of the Knights, stole the ball and drove the length of the court to put BSH down by five with 6:30 left.
Again, the BSH warriors refused to wilt. Clarke bombed in his longest threepointer of the night, the Warriors turned it over and Clarke arched in his fifth 3pointer to give the Knights a 44-43 lead. The Tidewater timeout at the 3:11 mark planned for

Fast, talented Falcons roll past Knights By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Ben Bowles (24) blocks a shot against Tidewater Academy.
Knights: Strong effort nets another tough loss Continued from 1B Moore to drive baseline. Ben Bowles and Ethan Sill thwarted his attempt, but the cat-quick Moore snatched the offensive rebound and stuck it back to give the visitors a one point lead. On the Knights’ next possession Sill, who played the role of facilitator and monster rebounder (game high 15), fed Waldorf on a brilliant pass, five feet from the basket. Waldorf drop-stepped and spun to lay the ball in the hoop while drawing a foul. In certainly the key call of the game, he was whistled for a travel and the go-ahead bucket was waved off. “I know I didn’t travel,” Waldorf quietly said post-game, “and it would’ve been an andone.” As the two teams traded possessions, Seale and Bowles controlled the Knights’ defensive end of the court, but, on his end, Morris harried the Knights into two consecutive turnovers. With 1:24 left on the clock, the lead and possession, the Warriors went into a four-corner style stalling offense. In a rare situation for them,
Blessed Sacrament had gotten deep into the final quarter and committed only four fouls – meaning that the only way to overcome the Warriors stall was to commit three quick fouls and send the visitors to the line for one-to-one situations. Whether by design or error, the Knights did not commit their fifth foul until there were only 39 seconds left. Then two more quick fouls sent Morris to the line for a one-and-one. He converted one. With 27 ticks left on the clock, Pomeroy called timeout to draw up a play, but Waldorf’s cross-court pass sailed out of bounds. The Knights sent Hunter Haywood to the line and he converted one for a three-point lead with nine seconds left. Strategically, the Warriors then committed two quick fouls, taking time off the clock, but not putting the Knights on the line; they still had two fouls to give. Consequently, BSH had only enough time for Thomas Murphy’s offbalance 30-foot shot that would’ve tied the score but missed badly. Clarke, Sill, Bowles, Waldorf, Murphy and

Sam Drewicz were the only BSH players who saw time in the threepoint loss. They skillfully played the control game that was required against the deeper, faster Tidewater squad, stayed out of foul trouble and, employing a 1-4 offense
that started plays further out on the court, “allowed us to control the ball,” said Coach Pomeroy. “And they never got in a rush.” Clarke led the Knights with 18 points. Waldorf added 10 and Murphy contributed eight. After watching seniors Sill, Clarke and Bowles play their final regular-season game for BSH, Pomeroy summed up the Knights’ emotions in one sentence. “It was a heartbreaker,” he said.
The Fuqua Falcons have the perfect makeup to dominate the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights: speed, quickness and talented depth. The visitors used these assets to roll over the host Knights 79-57 last Monday night. “They have a new coach and they really get after you,” BSH coach Ben Pomeroy said. With the Knights committing a handful of early turnovers and firing blanks from the field, the Falcons zipped out to an early 13-3 lead. Unknown to coach Pomeroy, point guard Sam Drewicz was playing with the flu, which only added to the team’s initial struggles. “I didn’t know it ’til after the game,” Pomeroy said, “but Sam is a tough kid and wanted to play.” Playing at a blistering pace and substituting in waves, while forcing the Knights to try to match their up-tempo game, the Falcons ended the quarter with a 18 to 5 lead. Blessed Sacrament could not find the range from three point land, committed for fouls and five turnovers. Opening the second quarter, the visitors increased the pressure on the Knights’ defense and pulled away at 26-9 and 33-13 with three minutes left in the period. Seven different Falcons scored during that stretch while the Knights got buckets from Thomas Murphy, Brian Clarke, Sill and Drewicz. The Knights stayed stuck on 13 points until Augie Conte sank two free throws just before halftime. Conte saw substantial minutes and showed the ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. The teams went to the locker room with the Falcons holding a dominating 42-15 lead. “I was very disappointed we started so slowly. We just didn’t handle their pressure well,” Pomeroy said. The Knights opened the second half with increased resolve,
particularly from Sill. The senior post-man scored on an early layup, fed Brandon Waldorf for a bucket and put back an offensive rebound. Clarke drove the baseline and Sill dropped in a free throw as the Knights matched the Falcons almost bucket for bucket and trailed 50-24. Ben Bowles took a Drewicz pass for a score, pulled down a defensive rebound and then powered up an offensive rebound for a bucket. Murphy went to the rim to earn two free throws, Waldorf made a big shotblock, Murphy made one free throw and Clarke knocked down a pull-up jumper. Murphy closed out the quarter with the Knights’ first three pointer and the home team won the third quarter 21-14. Clarke opened the final stanza with a baseline drive to cut the visitors lead to 56-38. Bowles scored on an offensive rebound putback and Waldorf duplicated his effort to bring BSH within 58-42 at the 5:17 mark. But the Knights picked up their 10th team foul and the visitors spent the remainder of the game either dropping in a new-found weapon -- the three-ball -- or marching to the foul line. Sill scored two more field goals, Bowles scored his eighth point and Murphy canned his second from longdistance for the final 22point margin. “Defensively, they are the best team we’ve played,” Pomeroy said of the Falcons, who held Sill to 11 points. “But there were some bright spots. Augie [Conte] gave us some good minutes and Ben [Bowles] played well. But we, with our short bench, have to put it all together and we didn’t do that tonight.” Murphy led the Knights with 15 points. In contrast, led by Kenston Fields’ 18 points off the bench, the Falcons put nine players in the scorebook, with four in double figures and six posting eight points or better.

Clarke: Versatility is key for BSH junior
Knights squander lead in loss to TA Leading by nine points after three quarters, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls basketball team struggled to finish off what would’ve been a significant victory and fell 52-47 to Tidewater Academy last Thursday. Katie Clarke finished with a game-high 26 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for the visiting Knights, who outscored the Warriors 24-16 in the first half and held a 36-27 advantage with just eight minutes remaining. But Tidewater Academy repeatedly got the ball to standout Cary Beahm (21 points) and outscored BSH 25-11 in the fourth quarter. Geena Landon scored 8 points and dished out 5 assists for the Knights. Kimberly Robben added 4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, while Taylor Thompson had 5 points and 6 rebounds.

After countless pickup games with her father, brothers and friends, she eventually grew into one of the best players in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference. Clarke, a 5-9 junior, does everything for the Knights except pass out towels and drive the team bus. She plays mostly on the wing, but can score just as effectively in the paint. She’s a tough complement to rebounding machine Kimberly Robben and can even fill in adequately for point guard Geena Landon when necessary. “She’s a very flexible player and obviously a great tool for us,” firstyear BSH coach Sally Lewis said. “Teams have a lot of trouble with her.” With the graduation of standout guard Austin Taylor, Clarke knew even more of the Knights’ scoring burden was going to fall on her shoulders this season. She made tremendous strides in the offseason playing for the James River AAU program and appeared poised for a breakout season at BSH. Her body had other ideas. Clarke missed most of the Knights’ preseason workouts with a case of mononucleosis. She also sat out the first three games and her conditioning was in doubt as she struggled to deal with the severe fatigue that accompanied her illness. In her first game back, Clarke played only four minutes because of foul trouble. But in the Knights’ next outing, she played the entire game and finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals in a 37-36 victory over Brunswick Academy. “I was really impressed,” Lewis said. “It took her a couple games to get her shot and feel for the game back, but [her illness] didn’t seem to slow her down that much.” Considering her earliest encounter with basketball, it’s ironic how much Clarke missed the game while she was recuperating. She was desperate to get back on the court and help her teammates pursue a VCC championship. At most, the Knights have only a couple more weeks left in the 2011-12 season. After that, it’s back to AAU and working to improve the skills –namely ballhandling and shooting – she’ll need to continue her basketball career after high school. “AAU is so competitive. Everybody is so much stronger and faster and everybody wants to play in college,” Clarke said. Despite playing for a small private school, Clarke is confident she’ll get that opportunity if she keeps improving. “If you’re good,” she said, “colleges will find you.”
