Schools The sunflower lady of Ballsville debate phone R policy By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
oute 13, from Cumberland to Plain View, is a nice place to take a drive, and the prettiest spot on this drive – at least in the summertime – might just be the field of sunflowers belonging to Mrs. Georgianne Matthews. Matthews, who was born in Cumberland, has been living in her Ballsville home since 1964. She has always loved flowers. Her children joke that her house contains enough silk flowers to circle a grave a hundred times. Back in 1990, when Bobby

Should students be permitted to use cell phones during lunchtime? In between classes? What if the student is texting with a parent about after-school pick-up plans? Should this be allowed? If you take a student’s cell phone away because he’s using it during class, when should you give it back? At the end of the day? The end of the week? Should a parent or guardian have to retrieve the phone? Or should it be returned to the student? And how about social networking sites? Is it ever appropriate for student and teacher to be “friends” on Facebook? What if the student is 18? These were among the questions members of the Powhatan County School Board hashed out at a workshop held last week on the coming year’s policy and procedures. Though other items such attendance policies and dress codes (See: “Shoe Showdown,” left) were discussed, social networking, cyberbullying, and, especially, cell phone usage, were the topics that dominated the meeting. Like virtually every other school district in the nation, Powhatan is deciding how best to adapt its policies to a student population that has grown up with cell phones and internet as part of everyday life. “Basically people don’t know what to do about it, but they want something done about it,” Superintendent Dr. Margaret Meara said, regarding cell phone use in the schools. Current PCPS policy is that students may not use or display cell phones at all during school hours; if they do, they are subject on the first offense to having their phone confiscated and on later offenses to more drastic punishments. “We’re trying to find out a way that cell phones and other types of devices can be used in instruction, but we don’t feel like we’re there yet,” Meara said. Though the board won’t vote on the 2012/2013 policies until its August meeting, the general feeling seems to be “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.’” Regarding confiscation, School Board Chair Debbie Jones said: “It really hasn’t reduced the numbers [of see Phones page 3A

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Dog Days event will be first of many, says organizer Despite the storms that blew through the area just before the event, the first-ever Dog Days of Summer festival was a hit. According to organizer Mark Stapleton, the fund-raiser for the Powhatan Animal Shelter was able to raise $100 for the cause. It also helped raise awareness of the Michaux-St. James Foundation, a group of Powhatan residents working to restore and preserve the historic St. James Chapel on Old River Trail. Residents brought their dogs to the outdoor gathering and enjoyed hotdogs, music and, using a Foundation member’s movie projector, a Three Dog Night concert video. “It was defiantly a success,” said Stapleton happily, noting that festival helped serve as a platform to help introduce the Michaux-Saint James Foundation’s historical preservation work to a younger generation. “We are hoping to make it an annual event.”

Flat Rock area now on voluntary water restrictions The Flat Rock Area Waterworks serving the Eastern Route 60 corridor in Powhatan is now on voluntary restrictions due to lowering water levels within the Lake Chesdin Reservoir, which is one of the sources of water for the County’s public water system. Recommended conservation measures include: Avoiding lawn watering on Mondays, and then following a lawn-watering schedule of alternating days based on street address. Limiting the filling and replenishing of swimming pools to levels needed to maintain health and safety. Limiting noncommercial vehicle washing to two days per week.

Powhatan at work: Detective Jeff Searfoss By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
I
t’s a Wednesday, around 11 a.m., when Jeff Searfoss disappears into the restroom with a boxful of drugs. The drugs need to be transported to Richmond, but, until then, Searfoss can’t let them out of his sight. Though this isn’t an everyday occurrence, it isn’t out of the ordinary, either. Searfoss says that, as a detective, one of the most important things you can be is careful. Dotting the i’s, crossing the t’s – a lot of what makes up good police work is simply following procedure. One of the basic rules: Never leave a piece of evidence that you’re in charge of unattended, not even for a moment. Another basic rule: When in doubt, get a warrant. The drugs – about three ounces of what appears to be marijuana – are being taken to the taken to the lab of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science on North Fifth Street for testing, along with a few blood samples. The blood samples and the marijuana don’t belong to the same case. With the exception of Lieutenant Mike Wentworth, who specializes in narcotics, the other three officers on the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office investigations team – Kevin Wolfe, Jason Tackett, and Searfoss – don’t specialize; they work all serious crimes from homicides on down – property crimes, violent crimes, financial crimes. Searfoss, like the other detectives in his department, is nearly always working on several different things at once, and he’s always collaborating with a variety of agencies – the FBI, Social Services, the sheriff’s departments in Chesterfield, Henrico, Goochland. “It’s not like TV where you see a detective spend months trying to crack one case,” Searfoss

says. “That would probably never happen.” Like most people you’ll meet in law enforcement, Searfoss finds shows like CSI and Law and Order to be almost silly, and he doesn’t watch them. “Whereas they’ll get DNA results back in a couple of hours,” he says, “we’re lucky if we get them in six or eight months.” Currently, on his desk, Searfoss has eleven open case files: one abduction and assault case (the case of teacher Mary Anderson, who
was abducted from her Academy Road home in January and violently beaten); one false police report (a woman who accused a friend of stealing her credit card and then was caught on video using the card herself); four breaking and enterings (three of which are related); and five child sex abuse cases. He says there’s no particular reason for why there are so many child abuse cases at the moment; it just happens that way sometimes. Though cases involving children upset him
more than any others – “At least with adult victims they’ve had a chance to live a normal life for awhile,” – seeing child predators get convicted and sentenced to prison gives him a particular satisfaction. In some ways, Searfoss is just how you would imagine a detective to be, and in other ways he isn’t. He often refers to criminals as “bad guys.” Blood, gore, and dead bodies hardly faze him, possibly, he says, see Searfoss page 8A

teachers as well as students – it didn’t go over quite as smoothly, particularly with female board members Debbie Jones and Valerie Ayers, and Superintendent Margaret Meara.
“Grown women don’t want to be told what shoes to wear, Ayers said. When Kunka suggested that a nasty fall resulting from a particularly high heel could possibly land the school system in some legal hot water,
Meara said that the school hadn’t had a problem with high heel injuries in the past, and that the policy didn’t seem necessary. “Everything doesn’t need to be defined, Meara said.
Sunflower: People passing by often stop to ask if they can buy woman’s sunowers Continued from page 1A
Proffitt asked if he could farm some of her land, she said he could, though she had one stipulation: he had to plant a field of sunflowers surrounding her home. For more than a decade, the flowers flourished. It wasn’t an odd occurrence for a passerby to stop in to photograph them, or to inquire if they could buy some. Matthews always said “No. Her sunflowers weren’t for sale; they were free to anyone who wanted some – to cheer up a sick friend, say, or to use as a Mother’s Day
gift. Once, Matthews received a framed poem written in appreciation of her sunflowers. Another time she found a letter in her mailbox addressed to “The Sunflower Lady of Ballsville. The letter came from a nurse who worked in Burkeville, and said that Mrs. Matthews’ sunflowers were the best part of her daily commute. When Proffitt quit farming the land, however, Johnsongrass began to take over; for six straight years the weeds grew higher than the flowers. But Matthews said that Tim Timberlake, who has taken over the
farming of the property, has succeeded where many before him have failed. He has managed to rid the field of Johnsongrass. Matthews tells him that he’s “the secondbest farmer the county has seen. (The best, she says, is Bobby Proffit.) This year, the sunflowers are as tall as they’ve ever been, and Georgianne Matthews – an 81-year-old widow, mother of eight, grandmother of 15, great-grandmother of one, and breast cancer survivor – is still giving them away to anyone who asks.

Schools: Cell phone policy likely to be loosened up a bit phones in the classroom.] While, of course, no teacher or administrator wants to see a student playing ‘Angry Birds’ during a biology lecture, the reality is that many kids these days seem to think using their phone is one of their rights. And some parents seem to agree. Middle school administrators said that they’ve had parents of 5th and 6th graders become angry at staff after their child’s cell phone was confiscated after the first offense. Although Meara seemed to support some loosening of cell phone
policy, when it comes to students and teachers friending one another on Facebook, she had a pretty firm recommendation: “I wish the law was such that they just can’t do it.

t’s mid-summer and the Powhatan Farmers Market is in full swing. Held every Thursday at the Village Roundabout from May 3 – October 25, it’s the number-one stop for local goods. Wine, produce, BBQ, baked goods, live music, pottery, flowers – though vendors vary week to week, the market always has plenty to offer. Running from 11 am to 6 p.m., this one-day event provides the opportunity to sample wines from 30 Virginia wineries, and will showcase goods from more than 100 local artists and craftspeople. Live music will be performed throughout the day by Casper and Steve Bassett & Ammon Tharp with the Mystic Soul Bubbas, and 14 regional food vendors will also be on-site. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the event, with “non-tasting” tickets available for $15. They can be purchased at the Chesterfield Town Center customer service desk, or online at www.TicketsToBuy.com. Additional tickets and group rates are available at the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce office. Information and locations for all other ticket vendors are provided on its website at www.PowhatanWineFestival. com Since July 2003, residents, businesses and various county entities have been coming together to host Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape. Recognized as one of the most successful wine events in Virginia, the Festival of the Grape has developed a reputation for excellence due, in part, to the careful planning and organization by Festival committee members, but also because of the community’s pride in all that their area has to offer. “Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape is truly an opportunity for Powhatan to shine,” said India Cox, PFOG committee chair. “Every year more than 50 volunteers come together to make it a reality, and now with the 10th anniversary we are excited to be hosting 30 Virginia wineries here in the heart of our community. By expanding the festival to welcome more participants, we feel confident that it will continue to be a wonderful opportunity for people from all over the country to experience the best of Virginia right here in Powhatan.” Held annually in October at the peak of Virginia’s beautiful fall weather, the festival has grown significantly over time. Last year’s attendance was estimated to be nearly 8,000 people, and the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce expects a larger attendance for the anniversary event. Tina Bustos, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, has watched the evolution of the festival since she started at the Chamber in 2008. “Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape started a decade ago with the goal of bringing people together to our historic courthouse to enjoy Virginia wines. Each year our committee addresses what we can do better, and along with a very supportive community, we have watched the crowd and our reputation for excellence grow across the Commonwealth. Today, the festival is the epitome of Southern hospitality nestled in our beautiful Courthouse Square, complete with tall magnolias and Civil War monuments. We love hearing ‘your festival is our favorite and we wouldn’t miss it!’” For more information, please visit www.PowhatanWineFestival.com.

olly Rachael Strong’s soothing voice is an asset that helps her as a certified massage therapist in her business – Just Breathe. As of Aug. 1, Strong will have operated Just Breathe, which is located off U.S. 60 at 2180 Plainview Center in Powhatan, for two years. Strong, 35, is nationally certified in therapeutic massage and body work. She also is a Traditional Thai Massage practitioner and studies at the Thai Institute of Healing Arts in Arlington. “I do a lot of traditional spa therapies,” Strong said. “I worked for some of the top spas for the last seven years and also on my own. So I do a lot of their therapeutics. I do body polishes, which is very self-explanatory, body wraps, which after the massage you get wrapped up like a little mummy [and] facial massage with different types of handmade ointments and balms and lotions….” Everything she uses in her massage therapy is natural and can be eaten, Strong said. Strong said she began her career as a licensed practical nurse after her first daughter, Niomi Kaiser, 16, was born when Strong was 19. Strong also has an 8-year-old daughter, Mira Strong. “When I worked as a nurse, I saw

If I were broke, which I often am, I would still be doing this. I will do this till the day that I die.” It’s her understanding, Strong said, that a lot of massage therapists in Powhatan have closed shop or are working out of their homes. “But to me, the ones who need me find me,” Strong said. “So even when it gets slightly difficult to make the rent here or to buy food, inevitably the calls will

start coming in and as a single mom of two children, I’m making it. I’m not saying we’re making it well. [We’re] kind of scraping, but we’re making it and with a lot of prayer, we’re making it.” Strong said she customizes the massage therapy based on her clients’ health history and needs. “What I hope to achieve is just to give them a little bit of space so they can rest,” she said. “They can let the mind stop turning. They can take a moment and know that in these walls everything that they say is sacred.” During the massage, Strong said she says a silent prayer for her clients and the goal is “to create a meditative state.” “The most amazing thing happens and it’s really hard to put into words,” Strong added. “My 84-year-old woman looks like she’s 16. All of the tensions and the dust and the memories and the pain and the medical conditions and the identities and the roles that everybody has on top of them just falls and what’s left is really beautiful and it’s worth everything just to see that.” For more information, call 832-6725 or visit justbreathespa.com.

because the first death scene he ever responded to was when he was just 18 years old and an MP in the Army. He was stationed at Fort McNair, located in Washington D.C. on the banks of the Potomac, and a bloated corpse of a fisherman had washed up on the shore. “With a body that’s been in the water a few days the decomp is awful,” he says, “so that was a good way to start.” He describes many aspects of his job as being mundane and somewhat dull – writing reports ,making copies, researching finer points of the law, drawing diagrams and charts – though this doesn’t really bother him. His desk is extremely neat and orderly, especially for a person who doesmuch paperwork, and his organizational skills serve him well in his profession. “You have to do everything correctly procedurally,” Searfoss says, “because sooner or later you’re going to end up on the witness stand.” When he watches TV, he says, he likes “boring stuff,” like the History Channel. He doesn’t en-
joy hunting or fishing and has no flashy or expensive hobbies; his big extravagance, he says, is going out for lunch nearly every day. Though he’s never fired his gun in the line of duty, he’s used his pepper spray on a few occasions, and he’s seen his fair share of grisly crime scenes. Jeff Searfoss is 39 years old and has worked in law enforcement more than half his life; he says he never really wanted to do anything else. In a rectangular case that hangs on the wall of his neat, orderly office he has four of his former police badges: one from the Army, where he served for nearly eight years; one from Goochland, where he worked as an investigator before coming to Powhatan; one from Sheriff Woodcock, who was current Sheriff Greg Neal’s predecessor; and one his mother gave him when he was four years old that has written on it “Sheriff” and underneath that, “Jeff.” He says working in law enforcement for so many years hasn’t made him cynical or jaded; on the contrary, he says, it makes him appreciate all the more the good people in his life: his wife,
his mother, his 16-yearold son. Though certain criminals, particularly child molesters, repulse him , his attitude is surprisingly non-judgmental. “Do I come into contact with a lot of bad people?” he says. “Yes. Are all of the people I arrest bad people? No.” Arguably, one of the craziest things he does is act as a canine decoy, a position for which he volunteered. To help the sheriff’s office manipulate the aggression of their two police dogs, Diesel and Jake, once a week or so, Searfoss will don a protective puffy suit that makes him look a little like a sumo wrestler, and with the help of a handler, he’ll have one of the dogs pursue and attack him in a variety of situations – on a bicycle, hiding in the back of a truck, running. On his iPhone he has a collection of photos of German Shepherds sort of just hanging off of him by their teeth. On this particular Wednesday, the most exciting thing that happens in the investigations department is the apprehension of a drug dealer that the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office has been looking for a long time, a man who goes by the

name of B.B. and who has connections to several murders. Searfoss is at lunch at Los Tres Potrillos, having tacos, when the call comes in from Detective Wentworth, saying they’ve had an anonymous tip that B.B. is holed up in a motel in Chesterfield, across from the Big Lots where his wife works. Searfoss asks several times if Wentworth wants him to come as backup, but Wentworth says he thinks he’ll be OK – it’ll probably just be a lot of sitting and waiting. What B.B. is famous for, Searfoss says, is dealing things that end up not being drugs -- for ripping people off. “We’re all amazed that he’s still alive the way he conducts himself,” Searfoss says. “But sometimes they just have more luck than they have brains.” Searfoss grew up in both Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and served in the Army in Korea, Kuwait, and California. He says that he has no desire to work in a department any larger than Powhatan’s. “We have nearly 30,000 people,” he says of the county, “and that’s enough for me.”

Powhatan Rifles get first taste of life in ‘Brown’s Battalion’ To mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, Powhatan Today will run a monthly article detailing what is happening in Powhatan, with the two Powhatan units fighting during the same time period as one hundred and fifty years ago. The soldiers mentioned and quotes provided in the articles are real. Some of the soldiers have descendants living in Powhatan.

uly has brought a summer’s lull to the fighting. McClellan remains bottled up on the Peninsula at Berkley Plantation and Harrison’s Landing not knowing what to do with his demoralized force. To assist McClellan, President Lincoln has ordered Major General John Pope to march the Army of Virginia, currently organizing at Manassas, towards Richmond from the North to relieve pressure on McClellan’s forces. General Stonewall Jackson’s wing of the Army of Northern Virginia has been sent north to block Pope’s advance. The Powhatan Artillery was reassigned to the 1st Va. Light Artillery Regiment under Colonel John T. Brown. Brown, a native of Petersburg, is a 26-year-old lawyer with no formal military training. He was, however, an officer in the Richmond Howitzers before his promotion to Colonel. Although called a regiment, the unit is usually referred to as Brown’s Battalion. The battalion is still part of Gen. Pelham’s artillery reserve. Brown’s men spent most of July training on Craney Island, a small island in the Elizabeth River, near Portsmouth. The island is vital to the defense of Portsmouth and Norfolk, because it protects the waterborne entrances to both cities. The men drilled, marched, maintained camp and improved the island’s fortifications over the month. On July 31, the Powhatan artillery fired their first shots at the enemy. The Powhatan and Salem artillery companies advanced to Coggins Point on the south side of the James River in Prince George. The two units engaged Federal gunboats firing about 1000 rounds at the enemy. Little damage was done and neither side reported any casualties. The engagement at Coggins Point represented the unit’s first offensive operation of the war. The 59th Va. Inf. Reg. remains at Chaffin’s Bluff protecting Richmond from any Union naval actions. Although the possibility of a Union amphibious attack has subsided, Chaffin’s Buff is an important point in the defenses of Richmond. With limited or no naval forces available to the Confederate defenders, the batteries at Chaffin Bluff and Dewery’s Bluff represent the best defense for the city against a naval bombardment. Confederate naval forces are so meniscal on the James that the naval ships protecting Richmond have been dubbed the Mosquito Fleet. The 4th Va. Cav. Reg. is now part of Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee’s brigade in Maj. Gen. Jeb Stuart’s cavalry division. The unit lost its two top field offices to wounds during the Peninsula Campaign. Col. Wickham was injured at Ft. Magruder and later was captured while recuperating. He has been paroled and exchanged. Lt. Col. Payne also was wounded during the campaign, so the unit will be led by Col. Stephen Lee and Lt. Col William Martin of Mississippi for the foreseeable future. The unit spent most of July on picket duty along the Shirley-Chickahominy River front with a camp in Hanover or drilling around Charles City County. The most exciting work for the month was a swing thru Gloucester, King William and King and Queen counties looking for deserters, runaway slaves and disloyal citizens. The unit captured 18 deserters, 3 disloyal

citizens and 3 runaway slaves. While at Gloucester Point, the troopers attempted to burn the wharf to prevent its use by Federal forces. Union gunboats, however, shelled them and they were forced to retreat. No real damage was done to the wharf, and it could still be used by Union forces. In political news, Lincoln signed the Second Confiscation Act this month which allows for the confiscation of slaves owed by persons found to have committed treason. This action allows Union forces to take, use or liberate slaves whose owners are convicted of treason and who live in a state now in rebellion. This act does not allow for the confiscation of slaves in Maryland, Delaware, Missouri or Kentucky. These four slave states have remained loyal to the Union, and their civil courts remain operational. There are roughly 500,000 slaves living in the four slave states which have remained loyal to the Union. Passage of the Confiscation Act clarifies Federal policy regarding runaway slaves. As noted in May, the Lincoln administration was indecisive on the slavery issue and its policies were confusing. The administration sacked Maj. Gen. David Hunter for freeing slaves in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, while retaining Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler who returned freed some slaves while returning others to their owners. The Confiscation Act places clear guidelines on the treatment and use of runaway slaves. Lincoln signed into effect a law prohibiting slavery in all Federal territories. This law builds on pervious actions by the Congress and Administration which freed all the slaves in Washington, D.C. and reimbursed the slave owners for their property. Both laws are in direct opposition to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dred Scott Case. The court ruled in the Dred Scott Case that all people of African descendant, whether free or slave, were not citizens of the United States, had no constitutional rights and could not sue in Federal court. The Court also ruled, in Scott, that the Constitution barred the Federal government from prohibiting slavery in federal territories. There are also rumors in the northern press that President Lincoln wants to build on these pieces of legislation to issue a declaration freeing all slaves in Confederate territories. He, however, is hesitant to issue his decree until a Union victory for fear of looking desperate. In addition, Lincoln has named Henry Hallack commander-in-chief of the Union armies. This position was previously held by Gen. McClellan, before Lincoln realized McClellan could not handle the responsibility of a field command and act as a Commander-in-Chief. Hallack was the former commanding general for the Department of Ohio, he is considered a brilliant logistician and his nickname is “Old Brains. As stated previously, he commanded Gen. Grant’s Army of Tennessee and Gen. Buell’s Army of the Ohio. Lincoln felt his success after the Battle of Shiloh, as the North calls the Battle of Pitts Landing, warranted his promotion. With Hallack’s promotion, McClellan’s dithering and the formation of Pope’s army it appears future fighting will return to Northern Virginia.

Rocky Oak Church will soon celebrate 264 years
A N N I V E R S A RY
By Ben Orcutt Contributing Writer
Rocky Oak Church sits on Rocky Oak Road, a short distance from the intersection of U.S. 60 and Red Lane. On Sept. 16, the church will celebrate its 264th anniversary. Pastor Scott Asselin said Rocky Oak Church is older than Powhatan County. During its long history, the church has been affiliated with the Church of England, protestant Episcopal and in the early 1800s became a Methodist church, Asselin said. “Rocky Oak Church was bought from the Methodist Church in 1996,” Asselin said, adding that the church is independent and non-denominational. Rocky Oak has about 24 to 30 members and is not large enough to support Asselin and his wife and their four children, so Asselin, who is an ordained minister, has a job outside the church, he said. “I enjoy the community,” said the 49-yearold Asselin, who’s been the pastor at Rocky Oak for three years. “I enjoy working with the people – trying to help people, help them come to a knowledge of Jesus Christ, the scripture and understanding that, get a hunger for God’s word and know God.” On a recent hot July day, Rocky Oak member Tom Stroud was busy building a pavilion so the church can have a place to hold Sunday dinners during the summer. Stroud, 62, said he’s been a church member for two years and during that time has been work-

ing on sprucing it up. “It means everything to me,” Stroud said of the work. “I feel like it’s my calling to do the work because God’s blessed me with the ability to do it and I think he’s put me here for that purpose.” The church sits on land that the county’s namesake – Chief Powhatan – used for meditation, Asselin said. “As far as the building and the facilities, the improvements that are being made there, both on the cemetery and on the church itself, we’re excited about that,” Asselin said. Asselin said the church may be small in number, but it’s growing and sometimes there are between 50 and 60 people who attend a service. “We’re looking for quality, not quantity,” Asselin said. “I’m not trying to build a mega church. I’m trying to build a quality church with quality people that is firmly established in the word of God….I
want people to understand and have a working knowledge of what they’re doing.” The church’s long history adds continuity to its traditional form of worship, Asselin said. “I believe when it says, ‘Go ye into all the world,’” he said, “but I also believe that we need to reach into Powhatan and looking in to be able to help more and more people here in Powhatan. As a minister, be able to minister to the needs of the people. There’s a lot of people that have been hurt, both in the church and out of the church and being able to meet those needs of the people.” Being part of a small church helps people learn to know each other and form a bond, Asselin said. “Part of ministering is being able to support one another in troubles and tribulations that come in life,” he said. “You know, bad things happen to good people. Circumstances of life that come that way, but
to have the support system there….” While he doesn’t have a problem with big churches, Asselin said it’s easy to “get lost in the numbers…I like being a pastor who knows his people….” The refurbishing of Rocky Road Church is kind of a physical rebirth, Asselin said. “There’s several different symbolisms you can take according to the scripture,” he said. “When we become born again, we become new creatures in Christ Jesus and with that there is a building process that goes on. The church is old. It’s been through a lot of battles. In the history of the church, it’s actually caught on fire once and so when we look at that and what you see now and people who may have seen the church five years ago, that church is, it’s a new creature and we see those changes, so they’re going [on] and there’s life coming back into the church.”
Karen Pederson Brown would like to proudly announce the 58th wedding anniversary of her parents Arnold and Frances Pederson of Powhatan County. They were happily married on July 27, 1954. Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!
After storm, use caution when hiring helpers Contributed report As Powhatan continues to deal with the aftermath of summer storms, there will likely be a lot of people going door-to-door offering to help with the storm cleanup for a price. Most of these will be dependable workers who will do good work. But there may be some who should not be trusted. If someone is hired to remove a tree and there is a chance of damage to property and/or if there is a chance that personal injuries may occur as a result of their work the people hired should have liability insurance to cover damages to you, your neighbors, and to their own crews. Ask to see a certificate of insurance. Also ask for references from others they have worked for so you can check them out in advance. Cleaning up tree damage after a storm can be very dangerous work and should be done by workers who know what they are doing. Finally, give some thought as to what will be done with the debris. Cities and towns will be burdened with an extra-large load of yard waste and may be making special arrangements to handle this material. Written by Stuart K. Sutphin, Extension Agent, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Danville Unit Office, 799-6558, www.ext.vt.edu.

Despite the fact that the shopping center parking lot was more than half full, it was impossible to miss them: two Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office vehicles, lights flashing, idling next to a parked car. What was harder to figure out, on that blistering Friday afternoon last week, was why they were there. The car that the two uniformed officers were examining didn’t appear to have anyone in it and it wasn’t parked illegally. It didn’t look like it had been broken in to or vandalized. It was only when I got out of my own car – and heard the muffled barking coming from the vehicle in question – that I realized what was happening. As one of the officers headed into the store in a last-ditch effort to find the car’s owner, the other told me that the temperature in the vehicle had reached nearly 110 degrees. If they didn’t locate the owner immediately, he said, they’d have to find another way to get the dogs out of the vehicle (I didn’t ask how he planned to do that, but I could have taken a guess). The story, you could say, ended well. Within a few minutes the owners returned, received what looked like some stern warning from the officers, and drove away. But the thought of what could have happened left a sick feeling in my stomach. According to information provided by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, even on a day when the temperature reaches only 85 degrees, it takes just 10 minutes for a car to reach 102 degrees. Within 30 minutes, the inside of the car can reach 120 degrees. In only a short time, as the organization points out on its website, a dog with a high body temperature can suffer critical damage to his nervous system, heart, liver and brain. Virginia’s criminal code lists homosexuality as a crime. The specific violation is listed under crimes involving morals and decency, and is specifically called a crime against nature. The law says if a person knows an animal or has sodomite relations with any person, they shall be guilty of a felony. So, Virginia equates homosexuality with bestiality, immorality and felonies in the same sentence. Surprised the above code remains after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that private consensual homosexual activity is legal? Well, the Virginia General Assembly never amended the code. Instead it has allowed Maintenance of this the Virginia statute, in this way, Supreme is conservative Court to determine the judicial activism code’s meanequal to Chief ing. Justice Robert’s The Genliberal activism in eral Assembly’s lack of finding the initiative to healthcare address the mandate is a tax. implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Virginia law has created two problems. First, the code loses it meaning to the average person. The code makes no distinction between private or public acts, straight or gay relations or relations between adults or adults and minors, yet the Virginia Supreme Court has upheld certain applications of the code. For example, it ruled that public solicitation of heterosexual sodomite relations, even if the acts are conducted in private, is illegal. Meanwhile, the Virginia courts ruled that private heterosexual relations between unmarried people cannot be held illegal. The court found “no principled way” to conclude
L E T T E R TO T H E E D I TO R Help is available for county residents facing domestic violence Dear Editor, After reading the article “Man guilty of plotting ex-wife’s murder” on the front page of the paper I thought it would be a good time to send a short note reminding the citizens of Powhatan County that help is available for anyone experiencing intimate partner or family violence. I cannot speak to the story shared in the paper speP.O. Box 10 Powhatan, Va. 23139 Phone: 804-598-4305 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-598-7757

that a law criminalizing relations between unmarried persons does not improperly abridge a person’s liberty interest. It further said that because the Code of Virginia attempts to control the liberty interest which is exercised in making these personal decisions, it violates the Constitution. Would the average person understand the code’s meaning, based on these rulings? If they do not understand the code’s meaning, then is the code enforceable? By any plain reading of the statue, all sodomite relations whether public, private, heterosexual or homosexual is illegal. Maintenance of this statute, in this way, is conservative judicial activism equal to Chief Justice Robert’s liberal activism in finding the healthcare mandate is a tax. Second, the Texas statute defined homosexual relations as “deviate sexual intercourse” and criminalized it as a misdemeanor. The Texas statute was overturned, in part, because the justices thought the statute attached a stigma to homosexuals and subjected them to discrimination. Virginia makes homosexual activities a felony, while Texas made it a misdemeanor. Virginia struck a law making non-marital heterosexual relations illegal, but maintains a general sodomy statute. How do these decisions alleviate the stigma or reduce the discrimination suffered by homosexuals that was the court’s goal? You, as I, may believe that homosexuality violates the tenants of your religion. You, as I, may feel uncomfortable discussing such issues in public. You, as I, may think such changes to the law should be left to the legislatures and not be imposed by a court. When the highest court in the law has spoken, however, it is the government’s duty to implement its decrees. The moral ramifications of the court s actions will be played out in Churches, Mosques, Temples and other houses of worship. The social ramification will be played out at the ballot box. The question you must ask yourself, however, is do you believe homosexuality should be criminalized as a felony and equated to bestiality or should the legislature amend the code to comport with the Court’s ruling and allow homosexuals a measure of human decency? My kind of town Powhatan Today recently caught up with a few county residents and asked them to tell us what they love about living in Powhatan. Name: Tina E. Bustos Profession: Executor director of the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization that has promoted local business owners and community groups since 2008. Residence: Lived in Powhatan County since February 2004. Family: Married for 29 years to husband Marsell; two daughters, Krystina, 21, a senior at Christopher Newport University, and Savannah, 17, a senior at Powhatan High School. “Having lived and traveled in the Southeastern United States as a Navy wife, we were fortunate to move back home to Virginia in 1995. We moved to Midlothian and enjoyed many excursions to Powhatan. When life changed, we chose to relocate to Powhatan because we felt like the schools were strong and where we wanted to raise our daughters. “Powhatan is special because of its rural character and the people that go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home. When we first learned about Belmead/St. Francis through the Powhatan Leadership Institute, we couldn’t believe that one place could hold so much beauty and history, not to mention the loving Sisters who take care of such a treasure. “I have the distinct pleasure of sitting at my desk and daily seeing our stately courthouse and watch the people go by. We have sat in Board meetings and watched out the big picture [window] as a local resident rides a horse down the road to County Seat to pick up iced tea or a golf cart or even a lawn mower. “Toward the end of October, we watch the courthouse come to life as Powhatan hosts thousands of visitors to experience Southern hospitality at the Festival of the Grape. This town is about the hundreds of generous volunteers see Town page 13A

who donate their time and energy to make our county a special place to live, work and play. Powhatan boasts a rural beauty that is only surpassed by the character of so many caring residents. It is such a pleasure to work with so many.” *** Name: Elmer C. Hodge Jr. Profession: Interim county administrator. Retired at the end of 2008 after 35 years in local government. Prior to that, worked in the IT field and in public accounting. Residence: Lived in the city of Bedford for three years. Family: Married to wife Sue Hodge for 46 years. Children are John, Kristen (who lives in Hanover County), Jamie (who lives in Henrico County and where Hodge stays during the week), Anne and Kim. “Powhatan is a wonderful place to live, work, go to school, etc. We all hope to find a place to live where we feel connected, where there is a sense of place and purpose. Powhatan is that and more. Here is a place with all of the charm, beauty, history and two rivers run through it. Powhatan is close enough to the metropolitan area to have access to all of the benefits and yet have a quiet peacefulness in a place to live. “Powhatan is a great place to work. There are many impressive small to medium companies nestled into the country settings all around the county. Some of these have been here for years but others have moved here in the recent past from other localities and other countries. For
some, the business is local but many others have customers all over the world. They love Powhatan County for its beauty, ease of doing business, first-class employees and a school system that matches any in the state. I love the Village. Everyone who comes here does. From my office, I can walk to some of the best restaurants in the Richmond area and they are all locally-owned and operated. There are no fast foods. The shops are perfect. There is a lady who works at the flower shop who waves at passersby. I get an outstanding haircut and enjoy conversing with two ladies who have had their business here for years. They give me great history lessons and friendly suggestions. It is easy to see that everyone here loves Powhatan County. The county employees are great and so are the elected officials. I have learned a lot from them. “Ask anyone to describe Powhatan County and they will speak proudly of the history and natural beauty that is here. Those who visit from other countries marvel at the beauty of the forests and how pristine the Appomattox and James rivers are. This is a locality rich in the history of the Native Americans who lived here centuries ago and one that played key positions for every generation since. Route 711 is one of the most beautiful drives in the country and few are this well-preserved. Historic Route 13 takes you through a different era, one of tobacco farms and dairy farms. This is a place where we all feel connected and hope our grandchildren feel that way too. There is an impressive new generation of farmers that produce local, organic foods and promise to be a major economic driver for Powhatan County. It is a place that we never want to leave and, if we do, we al-
ways want to return to. “My time as interim county administrator has been all of these things for me. When I worked for Chesterfield in the 1970s and 1980s, I spent a lot of time in Powhatan County. My sons and I fished and canoed both rivers. My family and I camped, hiked, and hunted the farms here. Many of my friends from those early years of my life still live here and it has been delightful to reconnect with a time, place and people that I love very much.” *** Name: Robert A. “Bobby” Wilcox Profession: Employed by Virginia State Parks. Prior to that was a grocery and specialty shop retailer for 30 years. Residence: Lived in Powhatan County for 24 years. Family: Married to wife Mary Anna (Havlir) Wilcox, one son, Lee. “By far the foremost reason Powhatan County is a vibrant and great place to live rests solely in the rare and unique sense of community its citizens possess. County residents have dedicated countless hours through government endorsed volunteer committees to establish the quality community we all enjoy. These committees offer every citizen the opportunity to become involved in the county’s affairs, which in the end, provides a valued sense of community ownership. “Countless reasons can be listed why Powhatan County is so special but the most prominent is the unique characteristic of a genuine sense of community pride almost every Powhatan County resident possesses.”

Saying that it’s hot is kind of like saying the upcoming presidential election will be contentious. But it is really hot, and when the thermometer reaches that hundred degree mark it’s really very simple to convince ourselves that the appropriate place to ride it out is stretched out in the Lazy Boy, latched onto a cold beverage. But, with the proper precautions (sunscreen, a hat and/or umbrella, and tons of cold water) you’ll be able to experience some pretty big sporting events happening here in the county over the next several weeks. First of all – and I really hope you haven’t missed this already – the County’s Post 201 American Legion baseball squad is winding down its season and shooting for regional play starting on July 31. Powhatan High School is well represented on this squad by rising seniors Jamie Schaller and Patrick O’Neil and recent graduates Nick Maiolo, Joe Manion and Tanner Phillips. Schaller, Phillips and Manion all take the mound for Post 201, Maiolo catches and O’Neil camps out in left field. These kids always put on a really good show. Another event that have really flown under the local radar is the Dixie Youth Baseball Association CoachPitch Regional Tournament. Ann Hillsman (Collegiate) is making the changes on instruction from Longwood University coach Buddy Bolding. Konvicka will enroll at LU next month, on baseball scholarship, and help Lancers usher in their new affiliation with NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Change is never easy, but it’s hard questioning anything Bolding suggests; the veteran coach has won 927 games in 35 seasons. Set in his ways, Bolding has built a reputation for requiring all his players to use 34-inch clubs. Regarding the move to shortstop, Konvicka said “coach Bolding told me he saw me as a shortstop, based on my size and speed.” He’s taken Bolding’s words to heart. “About every morning, I get up early and go to the Abby (Benedictine) to take ground balls,” said Konvicka, who relies on Dallas Wood for the hitting. “I’m trying to get better every day.” Post 201 coach Bryan Hannum gives Konvicka’s conversion thumbs up, both with leather and stick. “At first you could tell Colton wasn’t comfortable with the 34bat,” said Hannum. “If he’d make an out, he’d change. “But lately it’s been hit after hit
after hit … he’s over .400 and leads us in homers with four.” He’s using a Rawlings 5150 meeting BBCOR specs. Defensively, Hannum says “Colton makes up for any lack of footwork with his quickness and arm.” A Midlothian resident, Konvicka chose Benedictine, over neighborhood high school James River, “because all my friends from St. Edward’s were going to Benedictine.” While also playing soccer and kicking part-time for the football team, he was a three-year varsity standout. He posted career marks of .381 with 55 stolen sacks. “Colton’s the best centerfielder I’ve ever played with … or ever coached,” said Cadets’ coach Sean Ryan. “And this past spring he put together and amazing season.” The 5-9, 150-pounder has covered the 60-yard dash in as low as 6.53 under speed coach Reed Keegan and gets a rabbit’s jump on ball defensively, and on bases. “Colton’s made three or four of the best catches I’ve even seen; that’s counting the major-league ball I’ve watched,” said Benedictine Athletic Director John Fogarty. These are changing times in Farmville, with Longwood moving to new conference, and freshman Konvicka transferring to a new defensive perch.

Creek Park will host 18 teams from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia in this first-ever assemblage in Powhatan. Approximately 220 seven- and eightyear-olds will compete in a double elimination tournament. Games are scheduled every two hours with a mid-afternoon break. Approximately 800 spectators are expected. As there are no highter competitions for these players, according to PYAA representative, John Snellings ”this is the World Series for them.” The county will be well represented by the Powhatan National squad. Commissioner Charlie Green Jr. gets credit for grabbing the bull by the horns and agreeing to host this
tournament. The dozens of volunteers who labor anonymously while helping to make arrangements for the hundreds of players and guests, solicit sponsors and help out at the games really deserve recognition. Hats off also to Parks and Recreation and former County Administrator Caroline Bishop. Without their vision for Fighting Creek Park this event would not have been possible. So, before the month runs out, flip the old Lazy Boy back to its up-right position, grab your umbrella, cram a hat on your head (take some water if you like, but there will be concessions) and enjoy some really quality baseball. ship of our own. Byers, Harris, Minor and most of the players I admired during the 2003 season had graduated, but a worthy group of successors – Jonathan Marshall, Brandon Crenshaw, Maureik Goode, Sean Harris, Ray Grenke, Nate Mullins and Blake Campbell, just to name a few – had stepped up to lead our team back to Lynchburg. The temperature was frigid once again, but in the stands my brother (who also ended up playing for PHS) and two of his friends were shirtless with the letters “PHS” painted across their chests. Although we ended up losing that game, the experience of playing alongside my friends – some of whom I grew up watching PHS games with – on a stage that large was really quite unique. We had

They had come of age together on the field, granted starting positions during their freshman and sophomore seasons thanks, in part, to a lack of depth amongst the upperclassmen. dust and air born contaminates. Cabin air filters should be replaced at least every 30,000 miles. While changing the filters some antibacterial spray could be used on the evaporator and heater core. Also, on warm days you should see some water coming out of the air conditioning drain under your car when the AC is on. If you don’t see this water, the drain line may be clogged up letting water stay in AC duct work creating even more mildew. Have an auto technician clean the drain line if this is the case. I hope this helps.

made the transition from youthful, wide-eyed onlookers to on-the-field play-makers, like many before us had done and many after us will do. So, with that being said, I would like to wish the 2012 Indians the best of luck. On your backs rests the history of the program, as well as the eyes of future generations of PHS players. Whether you realize it or not, there will likely be at least one kid in the stands at every game that holds you in high regard, that sets you equal to Aaron Rodgers or Ray Lewis or Calvin Johnson. That might sound like hyperbole, but it’s the truth. Embrace this opportunity to be a role model by playing to the best of your ability. Who knows, you just might end up inspiring a future state champion or a future all-state running back. Even if, at the time, he’s only sneaking an occasional glance at you while playing with his buddies behind the bleachers.

Hey Eddie, I have a 1999 Dodge pick up with a V8 engine. Every time I accelerate the engine pings really bad. I’ve tried premium gas but the problem doesn’t go away. It’s even worse when I’m pulling my boat. My friend told me the timing needs resetting - help!
score of 6-0. I was in the stands that day along with thousands of other loyal fans who made the trek to Liberty University. The temperature was near-freezing, but two of my friends and I had our shirts off and our chests proudly painted with the letters “PHS.” Two years later, almost to the day, my teammates and I took the field at Liberty University, eager to bring home a state champion-

every Sunday and the high school players I saw in the flesh five Fridays every autumn. To me, they all seemed unimaginably big. I admired their bulk, which, in retrospect, was probably enhanced by the all-black uniforms draped over their oversized pads. It seemed impossible to fathom that I would one day grow large enough to compete on that field, in that uniform. But, as impressed as I may have been with their stature, I frankly didn’t spend much time paying attention to the game during those years. Like most kids my age, I was busy causing a ruckus in the open grass beside the bleachers. The time to focus on the action taking place on the field wouldn’t come until a few years later. At the time, Powhatan’s athletic program was still in Single-A, competing in the James River District. They made back-to-back state championship appearances in 1996 and 1997, winning the first against Giles and losing the second to a Powell Valley squad that featured a running back – Julius Jones – that you may have heard of (Jones was picked seventh overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2000 NFL draft. He went on to rush for more than 10,000 yards in addition to appearing in Super Bowl XLI with the Chicago Bears).
But, make no mistake about it, the Indians had plenty of memorable players of their own. Jay Woodson, Lee Goode and Tom Paquette are all players I idolized during the late 90s. Woodson, son of head coach Jim Woodson, was probably the most talented quarterback to ever put on an Indians uniform. Paquette and Goode were about as far apart in stature as you could get, yet each brought a unique skill set to the table that allowed them to be successful in their own right. Their names – and the names of many others – live on not only in the record books, but in the memories of those who watched them play. As the years rolled on, I stopped playing childish games beside the bleachers and began focusing, in earnest, on the action on the field. By this point it was

Walters ‘stronger than ever’
By Fred Jeter Contributing Writer
That cloud of dust you spot on the horizon just may be Rachael Walters, galloping down the home stretch of comeback trail. The former Powhatan High pitcher vows she’s “stronger than ever” following a disheartening knee injury in spring. “If anything,” said Walters, “I think I’m throwing a little harder.” The fire-balling, 5foot-9 left-hander is zipping her 60-some milean-hour heater past hitters this summer for the Richmond Storm U-18 travel squad. “Rachael is back all the way with a renewed vigor and want-to,” said Storm coach Bob Hansen. “She’s looked great for us and I expect her to be very successful at Radford.” Facing some of the east coast’s heaviest hitters, the fully-mended 18-yearold is 9-2 with a 1.40 earned run average with a strikeout per inning. In her first Storm outing, she fired a no-hitter. Walters, who will enroll this fall on softball scholarship at Radford University, will conclude her travel-ball career July 30-Aug. 4 in the Fast Na-
tionals in Orlando, Fla. Her career in the pitching circle was rolling along merrily until last March when she tore the meniscus in her right knee – her plant leg - during PHS preseason conditioning. The joint was repaired by Dr. Paul Kiritsis of Ortho Virginia at St. Mary’s Hospital. Following surgery, she worked closely with PHS trainer Mike Puglia, rebuilding her strength, flexibility and confidence. “Mr. P was amazing,” said Walters. “He worked with me every day, even over spring break. He helped me get all the way back.” Injury or not, Walters’ lively left wing has placed her among Powhatan’s all-time greats. As a junior the southpaw posted a 19-2 record, with 0.49 earned run average, while being named Southside District and Region 1 Pitcher of Year. She fanned 156 in 142 innings and was geared for an historic senior swan song when her right knee gave out in a freak accident. Walters returned late in the season, but was used sparingly. A left-handed pitcher places all their weight on the right leg after striding to the plate. “I felt like I lost my whole senior season,” she said. “By the time I came back, everyone else was already at full force … and I was just beginning.” Still, she dominated in
limited opportunities, fanning 22 in 12 frames. The daughter of Tim (elevator/escalator business) and Michelle (May Kay Cosmetics) Walters complements her athletic talents with exceptional academics. Her Powhatan gradepoint average was nearly 4.0. A product of the Powhatan Youth Athletic Association (PYAA) and also pitching guru Rita Lynn Gilman, Walters is a hitter’s worst nightmare. Not only can she overpower with blurring fastball, she can buckle your knees with her breaking pitches, and tie you into knots with her change-up. Walter’s catcher needs all five fingers to call her five pitches – fastball, curve, screw, drop and change. The tower of power on the pitching rubber has been the Storm’s No. 1 hurler all season, sometimes wind-milling more than one game in a day. “I pitch a little bit in just about every game,” she said of the Storm. Radford, a member of Division I Big South Conference, has a potent softball program coached by Dean. The Highlanders have averaged 41 wins since Dean arrived in 2007. By the time Walters reaches Radford, she should be well across the finish line of the rocky comeback trail. It’s not a pathway she ever wants to return to.

Planning: County will be providing around 1,800 lunches Continued from page 1B
Lodge is going to do one of our biggest nights of dinner, which is our Sunday night and they’re inviting the families to come as well,” Rundstrom said. “So it started out as us asking them to help us out with the 360-player dinner and it could potentially be a 1,000-person dinner, which is very gracious of them to help us out.” Saturday’s dinner will be furnished by members of Little Zion Baptist Church, who will be frying chicken, Rundstrom said. Rundstrom estimates that Powhatan will have to provide about 1,800 lunches over the five-day tournament to feed players, coaches, umpires, Dixie officials and volunteers. In addition to providing lunch and dinner, Powhatan also has to provide 110 hotel rooms for 360 players, plus coaches, for the first three nights. “And then it drops down as teams get eliminated, but the hotel bill, it’s over $40,000 and we have to foot that bill,” Rundstrom said, adding that the $40,000 has been raised gradually since Powhatan successfully bid on the World Series two years ago. Daily admission is $6 for

adults, $4 for children under 12, and children 5 and under are free, Rundstrom said. Gate receipts will help pay for umpires, scorekeepers and other expenses, Rundstrom said. Powhatan County Parks and Recreation also has been a big sponsor, Rundstrom said, adding that all games will be played at the four fields at Fighting Creek Park on Mann Road. There will be up to 23 games in each division and at least 86 softballs will be ready for play, Rundstrom said. There will be three-man
umpire crews, with a total of 138 umpires calling the games, she added. “We expect somewhere between 1,500 to 2,000 people on the first few days and in between you just never know because Powhatan loves its softball so they come out of the woodwork to watch softball games and this is the biggest softball game that’s hit Powhatan in a number of years,” Rundstrom said. Rundstrom said extra vendors will be brought in to sell items such as barbecue, spare ribs and sausage and peppers to give fans options in addi-
tion to regular concession fare. Angela Shelton, who is co-director of the World Series along with Rundstrom, said she’s enjoyed “seeing how the whole community comes together to help with all the donations and that kind of stuff. When it gets here, I’m looking forward to watching the games a little bit.” Rundstrom said donations are still being accepted and volunteers are welcome to sign up as well. “They can go to our website, it’s pyaasports.com and
click on softball and it’ll bring you out to the softball website and on there are some links for the World Series and all the contact information [and] if they want to sign up to volunteer for a spot,” Rundstrom said. The Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad will offer assistance, Rundstrom said, adding that Village Bank is donating a tent for medical purposes. Doctors’ offices and hospitals are being asked for donations and organizers are working with Bon Secours St. Francis Watkins Centre staff to help in having trained medical personnel on hand at all times. “We definitely want to make a good impression on the folks that are coming,” Rundstrom said. “We’re hoping for a huge turnout, not just from people coming from other states, but just from people coming from other areas around our state. People love to watch softball games, especially good softball games, and it’s a great family, fun event. It’s family-friendly and there’s usually good food, good games and some good camaraderie. So this is definitely the time we want to make the impression that Powhatan is a great place to come work, live and play.” For more information, call Rundstrom at 3320142.
