Last month, when a Powhatan sheriff’s deputy spotted a suspicious vehicle parked behind an auto repair shop off Route 60 one late evening, it led to the arrest of three Henrico men and the recovery of stolen property from seven Virginia counties, mostly property taken from auto shops. Additional search warrants have now led to the arrest of two more men who are believed to be part of the burglary team. David Lee Gray, 26, of Henrico was charged last week for his role in an August break-in in King and Queen County and Alexander Christopher Ryan Cossitt, 30, of Richmond, was charged in Cumberland County for a burglary that occurred in September. Justin Sandford, 23, James Wickline, 22, and Adam Young, 25 were charged last month in Powhatan with attempted breaking and entering, conspiracy to commit a felony, and possession of burglary tools. Authorities believe the quintet have committed burglaries in a total of 14 Virginia localities, including Chesterfield, Prince George, and King Wil-
You’ve probably seen the signs that crop up around the county near election time: “Powhatan is Republican Country.” And while certainly not every last Powhatanian considers him or herself a conservative or a Republican, the numbers don’t lie: In the General Election of 2012, Powhatan was one of the GOP’s strongest of strongholds in Virginia. In the Presidential race, more than 72 percent of the Powhatan electorate voted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney, and only 26 percent for Democrat Barack Obama. This percentage was high even in comparison to many other rural or similarly-sized localities. In Pulaski County, for instance, which lies to the

northeast of Radford, Romney garnered 61 percent of the vote to Obama’s 36. In none of Powhatan’s surrounding counties – Goochland, Chesterfield, Cumberland, and Amelia – did Romney get more than 65 percent of the vote. Although, Obama was clearly a more popular choice among black and minority voters, racial demographics were not the only explanation. In the small western Virginia city of Covington, a locality with a smaller minority population than that of Powhatan, Obama led Romney in votes by more than 15 percent. In the congressional races, too, Powhatan leaned strongly to the right. George Allen – while ultimately losing his bid for the U.S. Senate to Demosee Election page 4A
There weren’t many, but a few Powhatan voters did choose candidates not officially on the ballot. Among the write-in votes? Michael Jackson, Mickey Mouse and Elvis. For more interesting notes on this year’s election, see page 4A.
Jason Holbrook Saunders, a 30-year-old Cumberland man, will spend seven months in the penitentiary for stealing a bottle of tanning lotion valued at $6 from a Powhatan salon. According to testimony from his September trial, Saunders accompanied his mother one day last April to the Club West Med Spa, where she went Saunders for a spray tan. After Saunders and his mother left the spa, employees noticed a bottle of lotion missing from a shelf. A Powhatan Sheriff’s Deputy then contacted Saunders about the missing lotion and both he and his mother claimed it may have accidentally fallen into her purse. Although the value of the stolen item was far under the $200 benchmark for grand larceny in Virginia, Saunders was charged with a felony due to his two prior larceny offenses. Judge Paul Cella handed Saunders a two-year prison sentence with all but seven months suspended – the low end of the sentencing guidelines – due to the petty nature of all three of the theft offenses. As Saunders’ defense attorney Ron Gore stated: “What we’re dealing with here is a twoounce bottle of tan lotion.”

Pantry’s founder continues to serve others R uby Leonard (pictured above), namesake of the Powhatan Coalition of Churches’ Ruby Leonard Food Pantry, dropped in to help out last Thursday. Leonard started the pantry out of her Bell Road home in 1994, where she ran it for more than a decade. Six years ago, the pantry moved to the Bethesda Church of God on Academy Road, where it has been housed ever since. The pantry provides food and other staple household items to families and individuals in need, serving around 300 homes a month. This year the pantry is continuing the tradi-
tion – begun by Patsy Goodwin –of providing full Thanksgiving meals to families that cannot afford one. Donations are accepted from individuals, churches, small groups, civic organizations, businesses, and schools. Food pantry volunteer Theresa Fields said that while the pantry has probably received an adequate amount of Thanksgiving donations, one thing it could use is more Saturday volunteers. The Ruby Leonard Food Pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tues., Thurs., and Sat. at the Bethesda Church of God located at 2480 Academy Road. —Emily Darrell

Q & A
To Powhatan’s Spears, uncovering potential has become his life’s work Longtime Powhatan resident Ron Spears is the chief operating officer’s at Goochland’s Elk Hill, a residential and educational organization for at-risk children and teens. Spears was recently selected by the Central Virginia Partnership on Youth as the 2012 Outstanding Private Partner of the Year. Spears has been with Elk Hill since 1984, serving in a variety of roles, and helping the organization grow from a residential home for troubled boys, to a program that includes campuses across Virginia, preventative social services, and summer camps. Last week, he sat down with PT reporter Emily Darrell to talk a bit about community involvement, the importance of role models, and how his failure to make it to a 7 a. m. college business course impacted his future in a surprisingly positive way.
You’ve been with Elk Hill since 1984. How have things changed in the last nearly 30 years? We have evolved. We were once a residentialonly facility that served boys only and we were viewed as an alternative to corrections. The youth then were probably given a choice then by a judge whether they Spears would go to Beaumont, for instance, to do their time or whether they would come to Elk Hill and make changes. They might be here for a year and a half to two years. Now we’re being asked to do more with less time. Because of fiscal restraints children now we’re not asked to fix the big picture; it’s really specific issues that we’re now asked to address.
my grandparents over in Cumberland County had a couple of businesses. So I thought it would be a good fit for me. I had such difficulty getting to an Accounting 101 class that was held at 7 a.m. – I think it was three days a week. It was a prerequisite to everything else in business that I wanted to study. The Ohio winters were brutal and I just couldn’t get to that class. I registered for it numerous times and ended up having to drop it. The social work courses were in the afternoon and they fit perfectly – the sun was out and it was warmer then. It was almost serendipitous that this was the path for me. I entered this field thinking I would work with adults. When I looked back here to Virginia, I thought, “Gee, you know, Cumberland County, it’s in the center of the correctional world. I think Buckingham Correctional hadn’t even been built at that point, but Powhatan certainly had. So anyway I thought I might be not a corrections officer, but counselor. So I got a degree in sociology and a minor in vocational rehab. I went to work in Atlanta at that point, working for the Fulton County adult probation services. That’s when I realized I really didn’t enjoy working with adults. It’s not that it wasn’t rewarding, it was just depressing – because I met people had potential. But the word “potential was now a negative word. Because they were facing 20, 30 years of prison time and they wouldn’t reach their potential. I logged that away and I returned to Cumberland to run a family business. While there I found a school up in Buckingham County called New Dominion School, a wilderness program where you lived in the woods 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. I worked there for a year. I closed up the family business and I to work – that’s when I discovered my love with working with youth. Because potential’s a positive word – they still can be something.
Twenty-eight years is a long time – I’m guessing that’s most of your career. Was there a point where you made a conscious decision What kind of kids that this is where you come to Elk Hill? wanted to stay?
Kids ages 11-18 are inI went to Wilberforce volved in our educational University, which is in and our residential proOhio and my intent was to gramming. We don’t have major in business, because any murderers or rapists

or anything like that. Many of them have not broken the law. They are sometimes victims of difficult, unfortunate situations where things have happened in their families or within their lives that have made it difficult for them. So it’s our task to try to get them back on track .We’ve likened our services to an eddy in a river. An eddy is a rock where water is rushing on both sides and on the other side of the rock the water is coming upstream and it creates a calm spot. We’re that calm spot. Through the years we’ve decided to go upstream, basically, to try to provide more support services before people get so far downstream. If you
look at there being a dam or some possible danger downstream, why not go upstream and try to provide minimal services at that level? Maybe we can keep small problems see Spears page 4A

And once more for old time’s sake‌ Anyone stopping by the Powhatan County Registrar’s office as results rolled in on Election Day would have seen a very familiar – if unexpected – sight. Manning the phones as the precincts closed was former Powhatan Registrar Inez Poe, who technically retired last May. Poe, who has been serving in an advisory role to new registrar Karen Alexander, stepped in to help after Alexander went out on maternity leave last week.
Purple precincts?
dates carried the day in all races across all 13 county precincts, some areas did have a stronger Democratic turnout. Unlike the other precincts, all of which were less than 29 percent blue, Smith’s Crossroads (43 percent Democratic votes) and Pineville (41 percent) bucked the trend. The highest percentage of votes cast for Romney was in the Powhatan Station precinct, which went 78 percent red. The precinct with the highest voter turnout? Powhatan Courthouse, with 2,028 votes cast.
Everyone makes mistakes‌ Some Powhatan voters may have noticed a small problem when they arrived at the polls, but it didn’t involve faulty voting machines or lost ID cards. The “I votedâ€? sticker given out to voters in a number of locations, designed to resemble the Great Seal of the United States and bearing the Latin motto “E pluribus unum,â€? had the word “pluribusâ€? spelled with an “eâ€? instead of an “iâ€?.

crat Tim Kaine by around 5 percentage points – was clearly the winner in Powhatan, garnering nearly 71 percent of the vote. In the race for the 4th District seat in the House of Representatives Republican incumbent Randy Forbes, received 77 percent of the vote to his challenger Ella Ward’s 23. So what makes Powhatan so decidedly Republican? According to Powhatan Republican Party Chairman Tim Gresham, “I think it’s just the nature of Powhatan, the values here that people
hold and the work ethic of the people here. Another reason might be the strength and organizational efforts of the Powhatan Republican Party. In a thank-you email sent out by Gresham to the Powhatan Republicans following the election he praised the hard work and dedication of the county’s many GOP volunteers. “Nearly every Saturday in September and October, we had major activity, including several thousands of pieces of literature distributed, and thousands of phone calls made, Gresham wrote. “ We had new volunteers handing out
sample ballots at the polls Tuesday, greeting voters with a smile! One election mystery that, so far, has no explanation is: If voter turnout in this election was 81.7 percent, slightly lower than the rate of 82.5 percent in the 2008 election, why were the lines so much longer? And why did such a large number county residents say that they’d never seen such crowds at the polls? “Nobody can figure it out, said Assistant Registrar Jamie Swemba. “We’re all kind of scratching our heads. It’s just crazy.

small, rather than waiting until they become very large and you then have to take a child out of the home and put them in a residential setting.
Tell me a little about the award from the Central Virginia Partnership on Youth. I think it was based on a combination of things. They looked at partnerships, community collaboration, service to youth and families. I believe in being a part of my community. So even though I’m a come-lately to Powhatan, I didn’t grow up there, I’ve formed relationships with people through sports and other activities. The sport I’ve always enjoyed is basketball, so I’ve used that as a tool to socialize and to get to know people. When I’m asked I try to be a good steward and I try to be involved in as many things as possible. I’ve been on the YMCA board, I’m on the board of the Free Clinic currently. I serve on the Powhatan Education
Foundation, I’m a chief election official in my district, which is Mt. Zion. I think if you’re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. I try not to complain. I try to make a difference. I open a gym twice a week – the War Memorial Gym – in Powhatan, on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. I like to play basketball, even at age 56 – but it’s also an opportunity for the youth and the men in our community to interact and socialize and do something positive. We could be playing at 12 noon on a Saturday, but I picked 8 a.m., because I want people to make a connection between what I do on Friday night can impact what I’m able to do on Saturday morning. I need to go to bed so I can then get up and go out and participate in this activity. It’s just little small things, but I think everybody can do things within their community to make it better. I was surprised with the award. Because what I do, I don’t do to draw attention to myself. I like attention, but I really didn’t think anyone was noticing.

Man pleads guilty to stealing from stepfather By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
Marquis Smith, a 19-year-old Powhatan man, pleaded guilty to grand larceny for stealing jewelry and cash and other items from his
stepfather’s home. When Smith’s stepfather contacted the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office about the missing cash and other items, he said he suspected his stepson of taking them. Sherriff’s detectives found that
items had been pawned at The Gold Exchange in Midlothian and were then able to tie the items to Smith. Smith will reappear in Powhatan Circuit Court on Tuesday, Dec. 11 for sentencing.

HELP FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Your challenge? Filling the table without breaking the bank
We know, we know: just like every other person in charge of the family meal this holiday, you probably have a to-do list a mile long. But even if you figure out how to bake 23 perfect miniature apple tartletts at one time, made every kid at the table happy, and not forget one single side dish, the real miracle would still be figuring out how to feed all your guests a delicious meal while also not going bankrupt. Fortunately, according to information provided by the Powhatan County Extension Service, it is possible to reduce the cost of your holiday meal by planning ahead and smart shopping. First, develop a menu of the basics - those things you can’t live without and are reflective of your family’s traditions. Once you have the basics, you can add other menu items as your budget allows. •
•
•
With the menu planned, check your cupboards for what you have on hand and make a grocery list. Determine the amounts needed and if you plan for leftovers. If you will have leftovers, how will they be used and will you have enough storage space? Check food ads to determine which store has the lowest prices for the things you need and clip coupons. When you get to the store, stick to your list unless you discover a less expensive substitute for something that is already on your list. Consider a potluck approach if you
TURKEY: This is the biggest cost factor in the meal. Allow one pound of turkey per person. If your dinner is for a small group of people and you don’t have room for leftovers, consider turkey legs rather than a whole turkey. Brown the legs in a skillet and place them in a baking dish with one cup of water. Cover and bake at 350° F for 2 ½ hours. MASHED POTATOES: Sometimes it is less expensive to use instant potatoes if the group is large. Add more potato flakes than suggested to give additional thickness and season with chives or onion powder.

STUFFING: It is cheaper to dry your own bread than to purchase prepared stuffing mix. Save your bread ends and place them on a cookie sheet to dry in the oven at 350° F for 20-30 minutes. Turn the bread over in the middle of the process if necessary. You will also need celery, onion and sage. Used canned chicken broth rather than butter to moisten the stuffing. This cuts the fat as well as the cost. CRANBERRIES: Canned cranberry sauce is less expensive than buying fresh cranberries and making your own. SWEET POTATOES: Compare the cost of canned vs. fresh. SALAD: To complement the soft textures of the rest of the meal, add some low-cost but nutritious coleslaw

hanksgiving holds different meanings to different people. Some feel it is a day for being generous or giving thanks through unselfish deeds. Others feel it is a time to sit around with family sharing stories of the year. Still many others simply look forward to the day for football. No matter how you view Thanksgiving, one thing is for sure, filling up on turkey is an integral part of the holiday. If turkey is the centerpiece of your celebration – as it should be – then be sure to have enough turkey on hand to adequately feed all of your guests. Although they will be filling up on trimmings and side dishes as well, the first thing they will spear with a fork is a nice slice of juicy turkey. There is some conventional wisdom with regards to how big a turkey to buy. Most chefs or home cooks say that having a pound to one-and-a-half pounds for each adult at the holiday table is adequate. Children will likely eat a half or quarter of that amount. If you want to ensure leftovers, then you can increase the size of the turkey slightly. Therefore, if 10 adults and 5 children will be at Thanksgiving dinner, multiply 10 by 1.5. That equals 15. Multiply 5 x .5, which equals 2.5. Add the two totals together, and you’re left with 17.5 pounds. A turkey in that range should be adequate to feed guests. If your guests are known to be hearty eaters or if leftovers are essential, round up to a 20-pound bird. Keep in mind it will be necessary to check the size of your oven prior to purchasing the turkey to ensure the bird will fit inside with a roasting pan. Otherwise, you may have to downsize on the turkey and cook more side dishes. Once the size of the turkey is determined, it all comes down to thecooking. Naturally, the larger the bird the longer the cooking time. Instead of leaving cooking to chance, or to the unpredictable pop-up plug included with the turkey, take the time to select a reliable meat thermometer. The USDA recommends poultry be cooked to 165 F. Be sure to check the temperature at the wing and the thickest part of the breast. After cooking, let the turkey rest around 10 minutes after removing it from the oven. This will enable the juices to stay within the meat and keep it moist. And isn’t a moist turkey the ultimate goal? Then slice and serve to guests. (Metrocreative)

High voter turnout here speaks volumes By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Arriving at my polling place Nov. 6, just as dawn broke, it was hard not to notice a certain solemnity in the air. Even at that early hour there were at least 30 people already lined up, representing a nearly perfect cross-section of Powhatan. There were young people voting for the first time, and older folks who had seen many, many elections. There were people with dirt on their boots and those who were almost certainly on their way to while away their workday behind a desk.
And the word that came to mind, over and over as we shuffled closer to the room in which we would cast our vote, was “duty.” There is nothing inherently entertaining, obviously, about casting a vote. It is an extra thing in a day that, for most of us, is already crammed with too much. But no one seemed to be thinking of that as the minutes ticked by. Perhaps that is because we are all so aware these days, particularly with thousands of men and women still fighting overseas, what has been sacrificed to give us this right. Is there any greater duty than to
honor that sacrifice by voting? Judging by the high turnout at the polls, many Powhatan residents don’t think so. *** Of course, the duty to make your voice heard does not end once your ballot has been cast – it has to be taken out into the community, and presented to our newly-elected leaders. Our country has become divided over the past several years, with the two parties each marooned on opposite sides of a great chasm. This rift has prevented progress and, in many,
One question lingers post-election: Should Electoral College exist? By Jason Moore Special to Powhatan Today
Every four years one question, like a movie-inspired Halloween ghoul being resurrected for a November sequel, seems to permeate election night news coverage: Should the Electoral College still exist? The answer arises because of the likelihood of a spilt between the popular and electoral votes as in 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000. For conspiracy theorists, I did not include 1960, although a higher than average number of Chicago’s dead voted for JFK. The answer to such a ghoulish question is complex, and goes to the root of how our founders viewed democracy, the republic and the people. The Electoral College was a Constitutional Convention compromise. The Virginia Plan, supported by large states, called for the President to be selected by a bicameral legislature. The plan’s lower chamber was the model for the House of Representatives. Representation in the plan’s upper chamber would equal the percentage of the overall tax burden a state contributed to the federal government. Smaller states realized the plan relegated them to near impotence. They countered with the New Jersey Plan which called for the entire executive branch to be elected by a unicameral legislature. States would be assigned representatives based on population, but each state would have one vote. Both plans represented systems used in the states. Some states allowed their legislatures to elect Governors, while others selected executive counsels to run the state. Neither plan, however, could pass the Constitutional Convention. The direct election of a president was contemplated, but, to paraphrase James Madison, difficulties arose because the right to vote was more diffusive in the North than the South. The substitution of electors obviated this difficulty and seemed the least objectionable alternative available. Alexander Hamilton, Madison’s co-author of the Federalist Papers, felt: “[I]f the manner of [electing the President] be not perfect, it is at least excellent, [because] the sense of the people [operates] in the [choosing of the President] . . . [and
not] any pre-established body. Hamilton meant that the Electoral College acts as a buffer against a candidate manipulating the electorate and the president being held hostage to a body like Congress for election. Hamilton’s quote represents the general objection to democracy that many Founding Fathers maintained. They scorned Athenian democracy, because they equated such democracy to mob rule. John Adams said democracy descends into “the tyranny of the majority.” Our country, therefore, is a republic not a democracy. We elect officials to represent us. Our government fails to hold referendums on all major issues, unless you live in California where any idiot seems able to get an idea on the ballot. The Electoral College, therefore, achieved several goals. The system insulated the president from the popular vote while giving the people a say in the process; protected the interests of both large and small states and prevented presidents being beholden to a preexisting body like Congress for their election. Today, people feel these safeguards are antiquated and the popular vote should be used to determine the President. The argument is simple: the majority’s will must be followed. In addition, it is unfair that nine to ten swing states have an undue influence in close elections. I doubt changes will be made to the Electoral College, and I oppose a direct election of the President based on a nationwide popular vote. Huey Long said he would out promise anyone running for office, and the public would not figure out he could not fulfill his promises until he had been in office for at least three terms. If changes were made to the Electoral College, I like the hybrid system used in Maine and Nebraska. Those states award electoral votes based on a candidate winning the congressional district and the winner of the state’s popular vote receiving two bonus electoral votes. Here is how the system worked in 2008. McCain won Maine’s Second Congressional District and Obama won the First Congressional District. Obama won the state’s oversee Election page 11A
many cases, led to animosity and mistrust between people who would otherwise be able to join forces and work to solve the problems facing our communities and our nation. It is our duty, now that the election is over, to stop the petty bickering and the “us” versus “them” way of thinking. Furthermore, we must let our leaders know that we will no longer tolerate it, and that it is time to move forward. As much as our right to vote is worth fighting for, so are our dignity and our future prosperity as a nation.
L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Noted author may have best defined ‘democracy’ Dear Editor, In 1943 the Writer War Board asked E.B. White, the great American writer, to express the sentiment of the national effort. Under the title of “The Meaning of Democracy” he wrote: “Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half the time. It is the feeling of privacy in the voting booth, the feeling of communion in the libraries, the feeling of vitality everywhere.” We have just concluded national and state elections. As a great democracy, we conducted this event with great dignity and style. The American public was allowed to speak loud and clear. They expect government to respond to their concerns. Issues aside, we must realize that only through meaningful and respectful discussion can we reach a common goal. Compromise, the art of give and take, is the foundation of good governance. I want to thank all Powhatan residents, in both parties, who came out and voted. You keep us free from tyranny. Let us also thank the Powhatan Electoral Board and the citizens that worked the polls -- job well done. Marsell Bustos Chairman Powhatan Democratic Party

new Wal-Mart comes some well-founded fears for Powhatan businesses. I also have my own fears that one, if not both, of the Food Lions will close. I know that I’ve heard some complaints over the 10 years that we’ve lived here about Food Lions’ customer service and cleanliness. I have not personally had any real issues, myself, with either of the stores. I just want to give Powhatan residents something to think about. If we don’t support and patronize these stores, our sole choice for a grocery store here will be Walmart. If you want to make a quick stop to pick up something for dinner, a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread or whatever, you’ll have to do the Walmart “walk” just to get into the grocery store and then you’ll have to wait the Walmart “wait” in line to check out. Or, worst case for the counties revenue, you’ll do like I will and that will be that on your way home from work, you’ll stop at Martins or Krogers and give your tax dollars to Chesterfield County. I know that many of you supported Walmart coming to town but of those that did, I ask this of you: Do you really want Walmart to be your only grocery store option in your county? I have always loved the fact that the Academy Rd. Food Lion is just minutes from my house and in a quick few minutes I can pop in and out and be on my way. I admit that I shop Walmart on occasion but I’ve never been able to pop in and out of a Walmart in “a few” minutes! Election: Should college go?
An open letter to Powhatan Republicans
change does not require a constitutional amendment. To convert the Electoral College into a popular election for president requires a constitutional amendment. An amendment would require a twothirds majority in Congress and three-fourths majority of the states to approve the change or a convention of the states. The system used by Nebraska and Maine only requires passage of a state law. If people really want to change the Electoral College, then they need to consider the NebraskaMaine solution as an alternative to a constitutional amendment. It is doubtful that a change to a popular election of a president will occur, because there is not a super-majority desirous to commit to that change. A change to the MaineNebraska system is possible and would engage more states and voters in the election process.
a float in the Labor Day Parade. In addition to the placement of dozens of 4x8 campaign signs for our candidates, we also had hundreds of yard signs distributed. Nearly every Saturday in September and October, we had major activity, including several thousands of pieces of literature distributed, and thousands of phone calls made. We had new volunteers handing out sample ballots at the polls Tuesday, greeting voters with a smile! Our special local signs, “Powhatan is Republican Country” and “Vote Republican Tuesday,” got a lot of attention and helped drive turnout as well. Every thing we did this year was geared to maximizing the Republican vote. Our success should be measured by just that. So, how did we do? We provided Governor Romney with 11,192 votes compared to 4066 for the President, producing a record setting margin of 7,226 votes, 72 percent. We provided Governor Allen with 10,878 votes compared to Governor Kaine’s 4,463, producing a margin of
6,415 votes, 71percent. And we produced 11,586 votes for Congressman Forbes an unbelievable 77%! Bottom Line: We produced record-setting voter turnout, engaged new enthusiastic volunteers, and have built upon the success of our local Republican victories from last year. Who deserves the credit? You do! You know who you are! You made calls, delivered literature, attended voting machine calibration meetings, put up signs, took down signs, talked to your friends, sold tickets, handed out flyers, hauled tables and chairs, attended GOP meetings, cooked, carried, taped, tied, talked, walked and much, much more. Thank you for your love of country, neighbor and God. We are strong because we believe in our cause, put selfish desires aside and work to make this a better place to live, work and raise a family. God bless you all – and thanks! Tim Gresham Chairman of the Powhatan Republican Party

California adopted a law requiring the implementation of this system, once other states with an Electoral College vote greater than 270, did the same. Dear Fellow Republicans, While we are all disappointed about the election results Tuesday, our cause remains noble, our values are still right and our beliefs are still strong and true. We must remain strong and recommit ourselves to fighting for the issues and values we hold so dear. We should also feel good about our effort here in Powhatan County. Our primary mission as a local Republican committee is to elect Republicans and maximize GOP votes in district, statewide and national elections. As I said in an email Wednesday, we planned our work and then worked out plan. Working the plan required outstanding effort from a lot of people. Our efforts this campaign season kicked off with our Flag Day event at Lonesome Dove, featuring Tierro Cuccinelli. She was awesome and inspiring. Congressman Forbes was the highlight of our patriotic Rally at the Courthouse Green Oct. 6 which attracted some new supporters! Governor Allen made a successful stop and attended a reception at Italian Delight. We also had a presence at the Festival of the Grape gate, and

This was a rematch of a game played earlier this season in Chesapeake that Greenbrier won 14-0. It’s also remembered as the game after BSH had lost eight players to injury. Three of those players – JT Taylor, Mason Livers, and Chandler Emberlin – would return to play key roles in this game. “We knew we had played horribly the last time. Especially on the offensive line,” said Knights head coach Brice Fritts. “They challenged themselves for this game.” BSH (7-4) fumbled the ball away on their first possession, giving Greenbrier (6-5) great field position at the Knights 35 yard line. LOUDOUN – For the first 48 minutes of play in last Friday’s Region II quarterfinal, the Indians seemed be setting themselves up for one of the greatest upsets in the history of the program. All the breaks - or a majority of them, at least seemed be falling pleasantly in their favor. They fought valiantly, fueled by the thought that a victory really wasn’t all that far off, and took an inspiring 7-7 tie into the warmth of the visitor’s locker room. But Briar Woods’ depth revealed itself over the final two quarters. The pendulum swung and the breaks began cascading down on the other side of the fence. When all was wrapped up, the two-time defending VHSL Division 4 state champion Falcons’ were ultimately able to overcome a lackluster first half and knock off the Indians by a score of 34-7 as the Falcons extended the state’s longest winning streak to 25 games. It’s the second consecutive year that Briar Woods’ has ended Powhatan’s season in the playoffs. Last year, the Falcons defeated the Indians 21-7 in the Region II championship game. Two weeks later, Briar Woods captured their second state championship in as many years at Liberty University. Despite the large discrepancy in the final score, the Indians, in fact, struck the first blow of the game - on a throwback screen play, of all possible plays. It unfolded as follows: quarterback Joe Lewis rolled out to his left, planted his feet, and chucked the ball back across the field to running back Norris Goode, who had a sprawling field of grass stretched out before him. The throwback screen was the first of several offensive wrinkles implemented by Coach Woodson in an attempt to keep the swarming Briar Woods’ defense at bay. The famous half back toss pass made an appearance, and was successfully executed for a ten-yard gain. Later in the contest, the throwback made another cameo, but the Briar Woods’ defense snuffed it out quicker than a dog on the hunt. The night was filled with what-if moments, the biggest of which was a 61-yard touchdown run by Norris Goode early in the first quarter that was negated due to a holding call.
Another such moment occurred late in the first half, when the Falcons recovered a Joe Lewis fumble on their own 39-yard line. Forty-eight seconds later, with a mere four ticks remaining in the first half, McSorley connected with Cam Serigne to knot the game at 7. The Indians also had an opportunity to convert on a 40-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead early in the first half, but the hold was shaky, causing kicker Jonathan Malcolmb to squib kick a line drive right into the thick of the offensive line. Although Malcomb couldn’t convert on that field goal, he came up several big plays on defense. In addition to tallying his first interception of the season, he also recorded a season-high nine tackles. The Falcons’ vaunted passing attack was every bit as potent as advertised - at least during the second half. Briar Woods quarterback McSorley struggled over the first 48 minutes, completing 5-of-15 passes and air-
mailing several passes that should have been automatic completions. But he finished the half with three straight completions, one for a touchdown, and would carry his hot hand into the second half. Although he didn’t attempt nearly as many passes over the last two quarters, it was the quality of his throws, not the quantity that ultimately spelled defeat for the Indians. He completed four of five passes for 160-plus yards and three touchdowns, two of which were hauled in by wide out Devin Ramos. It was truly a tale of two halves. Although the outcome may not have been what the Indians’ or their fans hoped for, Powhatan can take solace in three accomplishments. First of all, they forced McSorley, who came into the game with only two interceptions, to match his season total. Secondly, they nearly broke the century mark on the ground (95 yards) against a team that had given up only 326 rushing yards during the
regular season. Lastly, they’re only the second team to come within 28 points of beating the Falcons this season - the other is Broad Run, who lost a 20-15 nail biter back in week two. The loss officially ends Powhatan’s season. As for Briar Woods, they’ll continue the hunt for their third consecutive Division 4 state championship next week, at home, hosting Liberty in the Region II semifinals. Lady Indians bid for regional crown comes to an end By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer
The Powhatan High School volleyball squad played chameleon in their Regional match-up with the visiting Heritage High School Pride team last week. The Lady Indians, despite having points taken away due to an error in service rotation, took game one 26-24 and game two 25-22 to establish what appeared to be domination of the visitors. But then Coach Erin Woodson’s charges continually shot themselves in the foot, with nine service errors, to lose game three 22-25. The Powhatan girls began to correct their service problems in game four and, on one of Janey Goodman’s patented deep crosscourt kills, worked their way to a tie at eight. But the Pride’s Sydney Busa’s kill and block/kill quickly broke the tie. Back-to-back aces by Dariel Montanez stretched the lead to four and the PSH girls never got back in the game. Busa’s four late kills and service ace put Powhatan down 20-25. After a solid start in the first two games, Powhatan let the visitors back in the contest and were facing the end of their sea-
son. Like flipping the proverbial switch, the Lady Indians charged out to a 3-0 lead, with Allison Etheridge’s kill, Kazzie Britton’s ace and Goodman’s spike providing the points. Pride Coach Carmel Keilty called a timeout at 5-2 PHS and then saw the Lady Indians reel off three consecutive points on a Britton ace and a kill and block/kill by Goodman. After Nicole Nee’s dink to score at 10-5, another Pride timeout failed to dampen the Powhatan dominance. On the verge of putting the match away at 12-7 the Lady Indians responded with another Nicole Nee kill, a hit – out by Busa and the match-winning point. Late in game one Powhatan actually fell behind by a substantial four points at 19-23, but after a Coach Woodson timeout, Goodman and Cecilia Fleming scored. At 23-24 Britton stepped to the service line and delivered a remarkable four consecutive aces to snatch the pivotal game one away from the visitors. Game two was tight at the beginning, with ties at 8, 10 and 11, before Powhatan scored on four consecutive points. Busa kills brought the Pride back at 21-20 and 22-21 before Goodman hammered one just inside the back line and then went cross-court at 24-22. Julia Goodman slammed the door with a nicely positioned return at
the net. Following a horrendous service game in the third,” and not much better in the fourth,” Coach Woodson told her girls “our backs are against the wall. We have to be more aggressive at the service line.” Her final words before the teams took the court for the final game were “this is our house and we will win this game. Play defense.” With 28 kills, Janie Goodman obviously dominated the contest. But she had somewhat of unusual explanation for the team’s lackluster performance in games three and four. “They were slower than us and we are used to being challenged.” Although she agreed that this was a big win for the Lady Indians, she felt that the Western Albemarle win was more significant; having lost to the Lady Warriors twice. That three game shutout got them into the District finals where it took five games to eliminate Fluvanna; another 2-0 winner during the regular season, and advance to the Regional’s. In Thursday’s AA Region II quarterfinals match against top seed James Woods, PHS fell short and saw their bid for a regional championship come to an end. The Colonels outlasted Powhatan 3-2 (2125, 25-19, 27-25, 23-25, 15-9) to return to a second straight semifinal.

Carter named ODAC Player of the Year From Staff Reports Randolph-Macon senior Mallory Carter has been named the ODAC Player of the Year. Carter, from Moseley, Va., adds the 2012 top player honor to AllCarter ODAC First Team laurels in each of the past two seasons.
Carter has racked up 352 kills in 97 games played for a 3.62 per game average, which ranks her fourth in the ODAC. She is also 10th in the league with a .253 attack percentage, which is first among outside hitters (top nine spots belong to middle hitters/ blockers). Carter is also adept at the serve and defensively as she is third in the ODAC with 50 aces (0.52 per game) and has picked up 236 digs (2.43 per
game). She recorded double-digit kills in 19-of-29 matches played, including a season-best 25 winners against Elmhurst (9/22). Earlier this season, Carter became the all-time kills leader in Randolph-Macon history, surpassing the 1,243 kills Maggie McDearmon posted from 200306. Carter currently has 1,392 kills following the ODAC Tournament, which is ninth in ODAC history.
Don’t forget your orange... From Staff Reports It’s hunting season in Virginia and that means you need to break out the orange vests (or other brightly-colored clothing) when you head out for a hike, trail run, bike ride, or camping adventure. And remember to put a vest on your dog, too. Wear bright colors and avoid earth tones. Don’t wear white – a flash of white may be mistaken for a deer’s tail. Finally, make noise. Don’t be obnoxious, but don’t be silent.
