Child ID booth to make debut at parade Program offers parents chance to store childrens’ information on disk By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Call it every parent’s worst nightmare. A child goes missing, the police are called in. Every single minute is critical as the search begins. With this type of situation in mind, the Powhatan Moose Lodge

and the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Department will be offering an EZ Child ID booth at this year’s Powhatan Christmas parade Allese on Dec. 8. Powhatan parents stopping by the booth will get the opportunity to have their children’s photo and fingerprints taken, information that will then be placed on a disk for the parents to keep (the machine itself does not store any in-

formation). A video of the child will also be included on the disk. According to law enforcement officials, having this inJohnson formation handy is critical in the event that a child is abducted or lost. “For us, it’s very, very helpful,” said deputy Mark Johnson, noting that, in cases where children are missing, having immediate access to vital information saves time both

time and resources. To Moose Lodge member Lenny Allese, providing the service is just part of the organization’s commitment to helping keep Powhatan families safe. “We want to be of service to the community,” said Allese, who, along with over 275 other members of his organization, supports numerous Powhatan civic and charitable organizations. Letter leads to anger, confusion Request for money in exchange for deed part of scam seen across U.S. By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A letter found in a number of Powhatan mailboxes last week has sparked outrage among residents and warnings about double checking before sending anyone your hard-earned money. Several residents called the Powhatan County administration offices last week, after receiving a letter telling them to send money to an address in Washington, DC. According to the letter, the money would allow them to receive a “grant deed” for their homes. Powhatan resident Wilma Burke said the letter looked “very official” and it was not until she read to the end that she noticed a disclaimer stating that the letter was not from a government agency and that the recipient was under no obligation to pay any money. “To me, this is unconscionable,” said Burke, who received a request to send $83. “This is not a bill, it’s a solicitation…and it’s not something

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Hodge: Powhatan may soon have new administrator At a Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the County Seat earlier this month, interim county administrator Elmer Hodge announced that the Powhatan government may soon be hiring someone to permanently fill the position that he has been holding for nearly a year, since Carolyn Bishop, who had served in the role for nine years, resigned as county administrator in January. Hodge said that the county expects to make an offer to a potential administrator in the next four to six weeks. However, Hodge said that he plans to stay on through at least January to ensure a smooth transition. The county is also beginning a search for a new finance director, after Jerry Whitaker announced that he will be leaving at the end of the month to take a position in Hopewell. Until a permanent replacement is found, Sheila Minor, the former finance director of Prince George County, will serve in the position on an interim basis.

Hatcher Woodhams, a 1996 Powhatan High School graduate, has been performing since the age of two. “I love connecting with the audience, having a good time,” Woodhams told Powhatan Today in an interview shortly after the release of her album Mysterious You in 2008. “But most of all, I love singing a song and sensing that God is working in the moment. Something bigger is happening.” Powhatan Community Church is located at 4480 Anderson Highway. For more information, call the church at (804) 598-1174.

Schools honored for students’ performance in AP classes Powhatan County Public Schools has been selected by The College Board as one of 539 school districts across the United States and Canada for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) coursework while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Powhatan is one of only twelve receiving this honor in Virginia. The College Board, a New Yorkbased nonprofit education organization, has commended all schools on the AP Honor Roll for providing equitable access to all students while improving overall performance.

What the people who send the letters are doing, essentially, is offering to send homeowners a document those homeowners can get themselves from the county clerk’s office--for far less money than the solicitors are asking.

ast week, near Erin’s restaurant in the Powhatan village, Henry O. Powers was spotted picking up these green odd-looking fruits from the ground and placing them in the bucket of a backhoe. What were these fruits? “I don’t know what they are,” Powers said with a laugh, “I just know there’s a whole lot of ‘em.” Powers, a retired dump truck driver who now works part-time for Scottville owner Michael Potter, had to get the baseball-sized fruits out of his way in order to cut the grass. Back at the Powhatan Today office, a bit of internet sleuthing revealed that these lumpy green fruits are known, by their scientific name, as the Maclura pomifera, or, more colloquially as Osage oranges, monkey brains, or hedge apples. Native to Texas and Oklahoma, the fruit of the Maclura pomifera ripens and falls in the autumn months. With the exception of the seeds the fruit is inedible and, in fact, is mildly toxic. Not entirely useless to humans, however, Osage oranges have been believed for years to repel spiders and insects and have been known to be used by crafty home decoraPHOTO BY EMILY DARRELL tors in seasonal centerpieces, who value them not only for their ap- stores have even been known to about two or three months – just pearance, but for their pleasant cit- sell them for as much as two dol- long enough for the holiday decorusy smell. Local farmers find unexpected buyer By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

Bill and India Cox, owners of (and sole laborers on) Powhatan’s Casslemonte Farm, are known for produce that runs to the gourmet and specialty: heirloom tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, Crenshaw melons. However, when they began to grow baby ginger – a finicky hardto-grow crop known for having a more delicate flavor than its big cousin – they never imagined that it would end up as an ingredient in one of the most popular and beloved craft beers to debut in recent memory. The Gingerbread Stout from Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery is a seasonal beer, meant, naturally, to call to mind the flavor of gingerbread. First introduced last year, it was so popular that it’s re-release party on Nov. 17 attracted more than 1,000 visitors to the Northside brewpub. Scoring a perfect 100 in Beer Advocate magazine, the stout has been variously described by beer aficionados as “AH-MAY-ZING,” “dangerously delicious,” and “Christmas in a glass.” Bill Cox said that Casslemonte supplied around 50 pounds of ginger – “a pretty good order” – to the brewery this year. Cox said that Hardywood’s owners, Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh, are great to do business with, not least of all because they committed to sourcing ingredients for their beers locally, whenever possible. (The honey for the Gingerbread Stout comes from Oilville’s Bearer Farms.) “We’re just delighted,” Cox said of the collaboration, “to be sitting on the edge, contributing a small amount to their success, and cheering them on.”

Until October of last year, Powhatan had never had a pawn shop – at least not in recent memory. According to Kevin Penrose, owner of American Family Pawn on Route 60, he’s been very pleased with the amount of business he’s seen in the last year. One component integral to his success: obtaining a firearm dealer’s license in April. Penrose says that gun sales now make up around one-third of his business. As of last week, American Family Pawn was sold out of shotguns, not surprising with hunting season being in full swing. However, rarer specialty guns are available, too. Among the stock? A WWII-era pistol, a 1919 Colt, and an 1873 Winchester Repeating Rifle. – Emily Darrell

Fire: Leaves can pose serious fire threat Continued from page 1A

Outside preparedness • Keep the leaves raked 30 feet away in all directions from your house and other items outside. Many times a fire will burn through the leaves and up and under the objects setting them on fire. By keeping the leaves away you greatly reduce the chance of the items catching on fire. • Keep the leaves raked away from dog pens and other animal pens. We have responded to fires and have found dogs trapped in a dog pen with nowhere to go with a raging fire burning through the pen. • Do not put any ashes from woodstoves or fireplaces in the woods or fields, no matter how cold they feel or how long they have been sitting. Ashes can stay hot for weeks and, when tossed into a combustible material, start a fire. Put your ashes in a metal bucket, add water and stir them with a stick. Dump the ashes in a dirt area. • Use common sense when burning. Do not burn on dry windy days, keep a water hose nearby, keep the burn pile manageable, and stay with the fire until it is out. • Keep a garden hose near your outside water faucet ready to wet down an area if a fire breaks out.

• A fire doubles in size every minute. It is important that we can find you quickly. Make sure your address numbers are at least four (4) inches in height, reflective and located so they are highly visible from both directions on the road. If you live on a private road also list you address numbers where your driveway meets the private road so we can fire you or to help us find your neighbor in times of an emergency. • Make sure your driveway is accessible for fire apparatus. The limbs from trees and other vegetation need to be cleared from your driveway, 12 feet high, 14 feet wide so large fire apparatus can get to your house. • Keep 911 number posted near each phone.

Inside preparedness • Have a working smoke detector on each floor of your house, a carbon monoxide detector, test the battery monthly, and replace the batteries yearly. • Keep the 911 number posted near each phone. • Have an exit plan. • Have a fire extinguisher near in your house and vehicle. • Make sure your address numbers are at least four (4) inches in height, reflective and located so they are highly visible from both directions on the road. If you live on a

private road also post the address numbers on the private road where your driveway meets the private road. • Have preventive maintenance performed on your heating source to make sure it is in good working condition. • If you have a chimney have it checked to make sure no animals have built a nest in it. If you have a furnace or gas logs carbon monoxide can back up in the chimney and fill the house with the deadly gas. • If you use a woodstove or fireplace make sure you have your chimney cleaned to keep the creosote from building up and have it checked to make sure there are no cracks in the liner. Cracks in the liner will allow fire to extend into the house. • If the power goes out and you use a generator do not run it inside your house! Keep it outside when it is running and position it so the exhaust fumes blow away from the house. Each year Powhatan firefighters respond to damaging fires that could have been prevented with a little effort. Please take the time to make sure your house, inside and out is a little safer for the fall / winter fire season. Any questions please feel free to contact the Powhatan Fire – EMS Administration Office at (804) 598-5646.

Hey Eddie, I have a 2003 Chevrolet pick up truck. The emergency brake does not hold the truck. The truck has disc brakes on the rear and I can not figure out how the emergency brake cable controls the rear brake calipers. Joe Internet

Jim, The code you are reading, a PO302 (missfire on cylinder #2) could be caused by a few different things. You already replaced the easiest and most common components for this problem. Your next step would be to do a compression test on cylinder #2 and compare it to the other cylinders in your engine. If the reading is less than the other cylinders (20 pounds or more) you have an internal engine problem. If all cylinders have about the same reading (above 135 pounds) the fuel injector on #2 cylinder should be checked along with the fuel injection wiring and the vehicle’s ECM computer. Considering some of the special tools you will need to check these items, I would suggest you have this checked out at a reputable shop who has the right equipment.

Joe, Your emergency brake on your 2003 Chevrolet pick up does not control the rear brake calipers. Your Chevrolet truck has a small set of brake shoes inside the “hat portion of the rear brake rotors. The emergency brake only works these small brake shoes. The rear brake calipers and rear brake rotors will need to be removed to check the condition and service or adjust the emergency brake shoes. Trivia Question: The first car to record sales of a million vehicles in a year was the model T in 1922. What was the next car?

Scam preys on most vulnerable among us By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Apparently, even as so many of us have begun to turn our thoughts toward holiday giving, a few Scrooges out there have set about to do the exact opposite. Calls began rolling in to the Powhatan Today office last week concerning a letter that many residents had received in their mailboxes. The letter, which asks recipients to send money for a “grant deed,” appears legitimate enough – many of those who have received it say it looks very much like a government document –but is actually a scam (see the article on our front page). The targets are most likely the most vulnerable among us, our senior citizens and those who are too busy trying to make ends meet to always read the fine print. By the letter of the law, unfortunately, the people sending these letters are not doing anything illegal. By the spirit of the law, however, we definitely smell a rat. *** Focusing on more positive things, Powhatan’s Christmas Mother Headquarters – located in the War Memorial Building on Mann Road – is now open for business. If you have never had a chance to see the small army of Christmas Mother Program volunteers in action, you are missing quite a sight. Year after year, these volunteers collect, sort and package donations, putting in hundreds of hours as the Christmas holiday approaches. The work site alone, which covers an entire basketball court, would likely overwhelm a less-experienced group. Fortunately for many Powhatan families struggling to make the holidays special for their children, the volunteers remain undaunted. Asked how they get it all done, I have heard several Christmas Mothers over the years say that it all comes down to determination and teamwork – and, of course, top-notch organization skills. We here at Powhatan Today salute all the Christmas Mothers who have served throughout the program’s history. Together with their tireless volunteers, they truly do make miracles happen. *** As many of our readers are already aware, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights won the VISAA (Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association) state championship on Nov. 17, defeating Broadwater Academy to bring home the school’s fourth such title in a row. With their incredible, come-from-behind win, the team officially silenced those who doubted them or expressed concern over the inexperience of both the young team and their first-year head coach. To the team and coach Brice Fritts, we would like to offer our most sincere congratulations. You never gave up – and you have done Powhatan proud.

The Powhatan Junior High School Academic Challenge for Excellence (ACE) team captured first place in the most points scored category last week in Nottoway, but lost a heartbreaker to Charlotte 202176 in the final match to place second in wins in the Southside Middle School Conference playoff. Park View was third with a 10-5 record. The ACE teams are made up of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Pictured above are Sierra Conner, left, Kayla Guthrie, Madelyn Lint, Jennah Jarosinski, Ally Kapasakis, Dylan Ratliff, Ben Wojcicki, Zac Young, Coach Kim Wasosky, and Abby Ryan. Powhatan, with a 13-2 record, scored a total of 3229 overall points to defeat Charlotte (3213 total points) and take home the championship trophy for Most Points.

hat’s always been my motto and– like a lot of folks as they get a few years on them – I like a little more light than I used to. I believe it’s a given that, as we age, we don’t see as well in dim light as we did when we were youngsters. So, imagine my surprise when I heard a brief snippet on my favorite publicly financed radio station (National Public Radio) last week while driving home that mentioned that the federal government has banned the sale of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs. My favorites! Big bulbs make big light and when I want to see what I’m doing I like them. But I guess what surprised me most was the fact that I hadn’t heard about this egregious usurpation of

ernment run amok. Like New York’s Mayor Bloomberg and his ban on big soft drinks. Like overly stringent regulations on coal power plants that will raise electricity rates. Like the never-ending push to build smaller, lighter cars that get even better gas mileage at the expense of less occupant protection. The very same news article says 75-watt incandescent bulbs are to be banned at the end of this year and 60-watters a year later! Say it isn’t so and, if it is so, tell me how did we progress so far down this crazy road?! Whoever voted for this mess in Congress should be voted out. But wait, we just had an election and I don’t remember the 100-watt bulb issue ever being mentioned. Call me crazy, but if there’s a candidate in two years who will run on a platform of a 100-watt bulb in every household, they’ve got my vote! Ken Odor is the editor of the Goochland Gazette.

my “right to light” before last week. Certainly an event of this magnitude had to have been reported on the nightly news—am I right? Well, like anyone would, I did a computer search on the topic and found out the facts (I hope). It linked me to a news article that says Congress has temporarily halted the ban on 100-watt bulbs, but that manufacturing has ceased anyway and they are virtually unobtainable. It all goes back evidently to an omnibus spending bill in 2007, which set the stage for the gradual elimination of incandescent bulbs of all sizes. The good news is some high tech company has come up with a politically and environmentally correct light device that will produce illumination equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb. The bad news is that each one will cost about $50! Call me crazy, but this whole business of doing away with the incandescents sounds to me like gov-

2012 Knights demonstrated hearts of true champions

“I had waited so long for that moment, I was already jacked up when I left the locker room.” Fighter Rich Chinappi, on his first fight

By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer

At a time in my life when I often forget where I left my shoes and end up in Short Pump without the list that I diligently compiled to remind me of what I was supposed to do when I got there, it’s not difficult for me to go back over the years and recall top plays by the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot football team. Chris Howard’s thunder–clap tackle on a kickoff; Mike Alan putting an entire defense in his dust on numerous 70-plus-yard runs; Tim Konvica’s touchdown hook-ups to one of the Pleasants twins; Dion Watts dancing through the defense’s second level before kicking it into overdrive; and John Moore plowing through a wave of defenders are indelible images. And, of course, Kyle Jolly and Augie Conte’s dominance, particularly defensively, is the stuff State Championships are made of. But, considering their size, Jolly and Conte are anomalies in the VCC. They would have dominated in any high school football situation. Normal human beings, being excellent, is BSH’s legacy. Compared to the previous championship-caliber teams, with one exception, the 2012 State Championship team at BSH is essentially anonymous. Decimated by graduation, with virtually every position in question, a murderous schedule and a first-year head coach taking over a program essentially built by an iconic coach, coach Brice Fritts was in a difficult, if not impossible, situation. But, not only did Fritts not drape himself in the readily available underdog’s cloak, he aggressively shook it off, reminding anyone and everyone that he had been a major contributor to the growth of the program, as well as its previous State Championships. He understood the difficulty of, as he put it, “being the man who replaced the Man.” Regardless, the early-season was nothing short of dismal. True, tired of being steamrolled by the Knights, some schools with similar enrollments decided to drop BSH from their schedules and, just to fill out a schedule, Coach Fritts was forced to schedule teams in higher divisions. But, as much as Fritts might have wanted to negate it, the opening weeks saw the Knights experiencing an obvious identity crisis. Early on, the coach stressed that his receiver corps was the team’s most gifted athletes, but again, with one exsee Points page 2B

Fight Club By Bruce Wells Sports Editor

Before a fighter becomes a professional mixed martial artist, he must prove himself as an amateur in the sport, competing against other up-and-comers who have the dreams of someday fighting on national television.

Powhatan wrestler embraces pursuit of mixed martial arts

For Powhatan prospect Rich “Chainsaw” Chinappi, that journey is just beginning. Earlier this month, just two days after his 18th birthday, Chinappi fought in his very first MMA fight at Amelia High School in an event hosted by the D2 Barbarian Fight Club. The bout lasted a mere 1:04 as Chinappi scored a TKO over his

opponent from Virginia Beach. “I had waited so long for that moment, I was already jacked up when I left the locker room,” said Chinappi who entered the gymnasium that evening to the not so modern sound of Frank Sinatra’s “Love and Marriage” blasting see Fight page 3B

were adequate, but the swarming, bone-jarring defense the Knights had become notorious for just wasn’t there. The number most often announced in BSH’s traditional linebacker-oriented defense (see Howard, Watts, Bendele, Dobrucky, Moore, Ward etc.) was a freshman’s. It was a team that, as the season wore on, just got it donesomehow. As the wins increased I was hard pressed to define the Knights’ success or to identify the gamechangers -- with one exception. Every football coach, regardless of the level, stresses The Team and

Fritts was no different. Yes, Sam Drewicz did end up on the receiving end of some long scoring passes--he had both TDs in the 17-14 State Championship win--but solid pass blocking by the offensive line and quarterback Stephen Bendele’s accuracy could have made those scores possible. Defensively, Drewicz’s interceptions (he also had two of those in the championship game, including one that stopped Broadwater Academy’s final drive) might have been the result of a strong pass rush and good down field coverage by the other defensive backs.

But, season-long, Drewicz made the big plays, the game-changing plays, on both sides of the ball. He ended up with the ball in his hands at critical times, and so often that his ball skills have to be recognized and confirmed. He was the Big Play Maker on the Knights’ fourth consecutive State Championship team-period. Again, Fritts, as he should, will down-play Drewicz’s personal contributions within the Team Concept, but even a dish of vanilla ice cream changes it character when you stick a cherry on top.

was smaller,” Chinappi said. “He was smarter and worked harder than the other guy. I started taking karate after that and I haven’t quit since.” With the Indians wrestling schedule now about to go into full swing with 54 scheduled matches on the calendar, Chinappi will break from MMA for several months before climbing back into the caged hexagon in February. “I promised my mom I’d finish high

school wrestling before I started MMA again,” he said and added with a chuckle I think she likes the wrestling a little better than the cage fighting.” Chinappi now eats, sleeps, works and trains with a purpose. MMA fighting, he believes, will satisfy his urge for competition and contact. “If everything turns out perfectly I want to be fighting in the UFC before I turn 20,” he said. “It’s bold but that’s my goal.”

The injury knocked him out of the tournament and he missed states as well. Chinappi, who trains year-round at Martial Arts World Powhatan under the watchful eye of Copeland Lanzillotti, competes a little bigger than his 5-foot-6 frame. “I really want to be considered well rounded before I turn pro.
