Burglar to serve 6 years
By Emily Darrell Staff Writer
Powhatan man must also pay over $25K in restitution to victims
A Powhatan man, Joseph N. Habersack, was sentenced to six years in prison last week on several charges of grand larceny, breaking and Habersack entering, and intent to sell stolen property. Habersack was convicted of these charges at a bench trial in August, where a judge determined that he was responsible for burglarizing three Powhatan homes earlier in the year and making off with more than $25,000 worth of jewelry.
Despite the surprise testimony of Habersack’s father at the sentencing hearing – a testimony that attempted to establish an alibi for at least one of the burglaries – Habersack was given at a sentence toward the higher of the sentencing guidelines, as requested by Commonwealth’s Attorney Bob Beasley. Beasley argued that Habersack’s criminal record was “absolutely abysmal,” detailing to the court a number of his offenses, including four possession of marijuana convictions, several reckless driving offenses, a heroin possession charge in 2006, and burglary convictions in both 2005 and 2006. see Burglar page 3A

Matthew O’Donnell plays hymns at the “Blue Christmas” event held last week at Powhatan Community Church. Beth Stoddard, PCC’s worship leader, says the event started four years ago, as a means of providing a soothing and sedate pre-Holiday worship service for those struggling with grief, depression, or other painful emotions. For those who are suffering, Stoddard says, the holidays don’t always bring cheer, and can often accentuate feelings of loneliness or loss. “We began this service specifically to address the needs of those who are experiencing loss at this time of year,” Stoddard said.

nature of the event: “Star watching is a great activity and we are excited to have the Science museum, Richmond astronomy club and public school teachers participate. It is a good fit fun, educational and free. For more information, please call the library at (804) 598-5670.
Tom Rich was never expected to make it to his 30th birthday – or so said the doctors who diagnosed him with Alport syndrome at the age of 8. But Tom, now 61 and a resident of Phillipston, Mass., proved the doctors wrong, living more than 50 years with the rare genetic disorder that causes the progressive loss of kidney function and, often, deafness. Still, Tom and his wife, Joanne, decided early on in their marriage that they didn’t want to run the risk of Rich passing the Alport gene on to any offspring, and they went the adoption route. Twenty-seven years ago they adopted a son, Adam, then 5 years old, from South Korea. Adam, who works as an account executive for a wireless company and now resides in Powhatan with his wife and two sons, says that he adapted quickly to life in a new country with a new family, picking up English within six months. Throughout his life, however, Adam, who grew up as an only child, always had the feeling that he wanted to pay his parents back in some way for adopting him. And now, by donating a kidney to his adoptive see Gift page 4A

COMMUNITY BRIEFS School Board seeks input on superintendent search The Powhatan County School Board continues to seek public input in its search for a new superintendent. In August, Dr. Margaret S. Meara, who has served as the superintendent of Powhatan County Public Schools for 23 years, announced that she would be retiring in July of 2013. The school board has posted a survey on the PCPS website, whereby staff, parents, and residents can express their thoughts on the traits they feel a superintendent should possess. Some questions include: “What is the first issue that, in your opinion, the new superintendent should deal with?” and “What is the one talent or skill that the new superintendent should have to do this job well?” Paper copies of the survey are available at the public library, the county administration building, and the school administration building. In addition to the survey, the school board will also seek public input via a public hearing, which is to be held Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Powhatan County High School auditorium.

Powhatan woman convicted of endangering her children A 43-year old Powhatan woman, Caroline Rebecca Wright, pleaded guilty in Powhatan Circuit Court last week to four charges of child abuse and endangerment for driving under the influence with four children under the age of 10 – two of her own and the other two belonging to a friend and a relative – in her pickup truck. Wright was pulled over for speeding on Route 60 one morning last July by a Virginia State Trooper who noticed she smelled like alcohol. Wright subsequently failed three sobriety tests; a breathalyzer test found her blood alcohol level to be .21 percent, nearly three times the legal limit of .08. Wright also pleaded guilty to a third DUI violation within a 10 year span. In 2003, Wright was found guilty of driving under the influence in Chesterfield County and in 2005 she was found guilty of the same offense in Nottoway. Each of Wright’s five charges are Class 6 felonies, which carry a range of punishment from a fine of up to $2,500 to five years in the penitentiary. — Emily Darrell

Before Circuit Court Judge Paul Cella handed out the sentence – 15 years on each of the nine charges, with all but six suspended and the sentences to run concurrently – he granted Habersack the opportunity to make a statement.
Habersack admitted that he “made a mistake of selling gold to the wrong person, but maintained that he’d obtained the gold through purchase and not through theft. “I didn’t break into anybody’s home, he said. “I did not. Habersack said he also found it “appalling that

I feel a warmth around me Like your presence is so near, And I close my eyes to visualize Your face when you were here, I endure the times we spent together And they are locked inside my heart, For as long as I have those memories We will never be apart. Even though we cannot speak no more My voice is always there, Because every night before I sleep I have you in my prayer. Love, Pat
Adam says. “Everyone was kind of shocked when I came back as a match.” Because Adam and his father are not blood related – and are from different ethnic groups (Tom being of mixed Swedish heritage) – the chance that an organ transplant between the two would even be possible was significantly reduced. However, with organ donation science constantly improving, donations between unrelated persons – husbands and wives, friends, and even complete strangers – are becoming more common. After undergoing the surgery at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in August, both father and son are doing remarkably well. Adam says that the procedure was not without its pain and inconveniences. “The first couple of days after the surgery were really rough,” he says. “It kinds of
feels like you got hit by a truck.” The recovery process also takes about a full year. Four months after the surgery Adam still can’t lift more than 15 pounds, has had to reduce his alcohol intake to a very minimal amount, and can’t handle sugary foods as well as he once could. Still, he says he doesn’t regret the decision a bit. “Right before the surgery my dad was very swollen, he was exhausted, he would be asleep by five o’clock,” Adam says. “Now he’s getting back to a lot of the things he used to enjoy.” If you’ve ever considered donating a kidney to someone in need, Adam Rich would be happy to share his personal experience with you. Please contact Staff Writer Emily Darrell at edarrell@powhatantoday. com and she will get you in touch.

On December 21, Mary Annie Martin will celebrate her 100th birthday, joining the ranks of more than 1,000 Virginians who can now call themselves centenarians. Martin worked as a teacher for more than 40 years, teaching psychics, chem-

Mrs. Iris Jackson; and the late Mr. and Mrs. James E. Stone. The groom, a graduate of Monacan High School, received a B.S. in Finance from East Carolina University and is employed withBenchmark Mortgage & The Young Team in Greensboro. The bride, escorted by her father, was given in marriageby her parents. She was attended by her sister, Rebekah Kontoulas, as maid of honor, and JessicaWarlick, cousin ofthe bride, as matron of honor. Bridesmaids included Hannah Kontoulas, sister of the bride; Joelle Humphrey, cousin ofthe bride; and Sara Bowen, Elizabeth Klutts, Tara Howard,Morgan Arledge, Lauren Evans and Ashley Pridmore. The groom’s father was best man. Groomsmen included Brian Williamson, George Hoddinott, Ryan Baldwin, Brandon Moss and Joey Rosassco. The junior groomsmen were Chase Robinson, nephew of the groom, and James Spencer Kontoulas, brother of the bride. Greeters for the service were Tammy Armistead Robinson, sister of the groom; Maegan Prusaitis, cousin of the bride; and Frankie Hill. Scripture was read by Pam McLaughlin, aunt of the groom. The bride chose Kennedy Moore as the flower girl, and the ring bearers were Miller Warlick, cousin of the bride, and Carter Bowen. Music was provided by Connie Hastings, organist, and Chris White, soloist. Vickie Page directed the wedding. Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents hosted a reception at Revolution Mill Studios. The rehearsal dinner was hosted by the
istry and math in middle and high schools in Powhatan, Cumberland, and Midlothian. She never married or had children of her own, though it seems she’s taught over the years she taught at least the kin of just about everybody in the three counties. After retiring from teaching in 1978, she helped to establish Cumberland’s first real rescue squad, co-wrote a history of the county, and has stayed up on, and active in, county politics. She has the distinction of being the first woman to receive a Master’s degree in physics from UVA, survived a bought of Lyme’s disease at the age of 98, and currently helps to care for her ailing niece. Not bad for a woman who, at the age of 15, had both her family and the local doctor nearly give her up for dead. Diagnosed with what was then called “yellow jaundice” – which had already killed two other young women – Martin could hear the doctor talking gravely to her mother. As it turned out, he’d brought a death certificate along with him, assuming she would die. Determined to prove him wrong, Martin says she all but willed herself back to health. “From then on I began to get better,” she said. “So I never needed that death certificate. I don’t know what he did with it. He didn’t leave it.”
groom’s parents Friday evening at Proximity Hotel Revolution Room. John and Jeannie Gallins, godparentsof the bride, hosted a bridal luncheon Friday at Print Works Bistro. Following a honeymoon trip to Punta Cana, the couple reside in Greensboro.

Because this isn’t exactly the forum to relive miserable holidays past, I’ll give you the abridged version: It’s days before Christmas, and my family is gathered in an otherwise deserted cemetery, ankle-deep in snow. Under a gray sky, we huddle together to say goodbye to my grandmother, who had
passed away unexpectedly days before. During those few days, as we’d made our way through funeral masses and picked at the food well-meaning friends brought over, the rest of the world was – naturally – blaring holiday music and finalizing their Christmas shopping. None of us begrudged them their Christmas celebration, of course. We just felt oddly removed from it – detached. In our grief, we felt like visitors in an oddly festive foreign country.
Last week, the Powhatan Community Church once again hosted its annual Blue Christmas event, a service geared toward those who are dealing with the pain of loss during the holiday season. Having never heard of such a service, I was particularly intrigued by the idea: a holiday service that allowed people dealing with loss to admit and embrace the fact that, at least for them, the world didn’t seem very merry or bright. n the countryside overlooking the small village of Bethlehem, a herd of sheep settles into the grass for a good night’s rest. Their shepherds keeping watch lean against their staffs, nodding in and out of sleep. It is an ordinary night, but these everyday men are about to become the most famous search party in all of history. The story of this night will be told and retold for thousands of years. Suddenly, flashes of bright light break through the darkness. The men rub their eyes. Is this a dream? There, in the midst of them, stands an angel. Glory blazes all around. A thousand different colors swirl like liquid light flowing from the sky above to the dirt beneath their feet. Terrified, these burly men hit the dirt.
Some of them scream. Others run and hide. “Don’t be afraid,” says the angel. His voice sounds like a pleasant melody. He delivers a message: “The Savior of the whole world, the one foretold for centuries, has been born on this night in the town below. You will find him, a baby wrapped in a blanket, lying in a barn’s feeding trough.” A choir of angels appears in the night’s sky. Great beautiful heavenly beings, they sing about God’s glory and peace on earth. It is music so lovely – the likes of Bach and Beethoven will search for only a few measures of it. “Peace on earth!” they sing as their great finale. And then they are gone. The music stops. There is again only the dark night. The shepherds are seeing spots. Flabbergasted, they turn to one another. “How are we to find this baby in a barn?” they wonder. “At this hour of the night, who will help us? Who will stay with the sheep?” Somehow they figure out a plan, and then hurry down the hill toward the town. They start knocking on doors. “Ahem, sorry to wake you. Is there a baby in your barn? Uh…you see these angels told us…” “No, no babies here,” says the tired man at the door. “Now kindly let us go back to sleep.” On to the next house, again they knock. “Do you have a baby in the barn here?” they ask. The angry, half-asleep innkeeper sends them away. Still they knock, one house to the next. A few times, there is no answer at the door. Twice they think they have found the baby. “Ah, yes, we’ve had a baby born here tonight,” says the guesthouse manager. They rejoice! …only to find it a false hope. The baby is in a cradle in a guest room, not a manger in a barn as the angel said. Still they keep going. Finally, someone has heard the cries of a woman giving birth in one of the stables. Joseph meets them at the door. Mary, exhausted from travel and childbirth, is resting in the straw next to her newborn baby boy. He is wrapped in a blanket, lying in the manger. It is just as the angels said it would be. This baby must be the Son of God, the Hope of the World, the long-awaited Good King of All. They fall down on their knees. They jump for joy. They stand in awe. They
an established history of reaching out to those in the community who would otherwise be overlooked. Once again, they have managed to come to the aid of a group that is often forgotten, particularly in the blizzard of gift giving, holiday parties and other obligations. What PCC did with this service was to offer hope and comfort to those who may have been struggling to find it. And if that isn’t the true meaning of Christmas, I’m not sure what is.

ver the river and through the woods to nana’s house we go – well, none of them have to go over the river but they can cut through the woods to spend time with Nana and Poppy. I have come to realize just how fortunate and blessed I am to have six grandchildren living in close proximity. I am especially proud of the things they do that develop deep roots along with a sense of community. Things such as selling corn at the Farmers Market, giving all proceeds to the Ruby Leonard Food Pantry and special performances at a benefit for the Christmas Mother Program help them cultivate the heart of a servant. I recall stitching small purple bow ties for three of them to dance at a Relay For Life “Purple Power” Fashion Show. My grandchildren created the replica of “Tow Mater” that is often seen in parades and around the county. They used paper plates to make his eyes perfectly round and had spray paint everywhere sprucing up Mater’s beat-up body. Regardless of how busy they may be with church, school, sports, scouts or family activities, my grandkids are always willing to help when it comes to helping others. Learning to serve is developed on a daily basis, not in a day. Collectively they are precious and endearing, but individually each one steals my affection, reaching into the very depths of my soul. Trey, the oldest of the five boys, has a heart of gold. He makes a great travel buddy when he goes with me to help with storytelling in other counties up and down the James River. His piece of artwork in my first children’s book laid the groundwork for future ideas. He demonstrates a work ethic on a daily basis that some adults do not achieve throughout their career. A question he asks me repeatedly is “Nana, do you have any chores I can do? I am saving up to get something special and I could use the extra cash.” see Grandchildren page 9A

Grandchildren: Kid’s light up grandma’s life Baby: Revisiting scene of most famous birth Asher is good at gleaning. He prides himself in his ability to harvest more crops more quickly so he can feed more people that are hungry. He is well coordinated and a star ball player. I am especially delighted that he practices good sportsmanship on the field. A recent question he asked was “Nana, want to ride with me on the fourwheeler? I will put it in first gear cause you don’t like to go very fast.” Fischer is the music man with unbelievable rhythm and charisma for a seven year old. Folks tend to donate greater amounts to a cause when they witness his enthusiasm and ability to move to the beat. He loves to do the singing parts when he helps tell a story. Fischer often asks me when I pop in to his house “Nana, will you come play with me in my room?” Perhaps I need to schedule play dates. Mason possesses great self-confidence which sometimes presents a challenge. He is determined and sure, believing that he can get a task done regardless of how demanding it may be. He also loves singing and played the part of “Alvin” the chipmunk perfectly for the Christmas Mother. Although I previously assigned parts for the performance in the tea, Mason practically shouted the question “Nana, can I please be Alvin when we do the chipmunks?” Clayton, the youngest, is the most pleasant and easygoing child in the whole world. He is well mannered and cooperative about everything. One of his assets is his “stick-toit” attitude. He will stay the course and help you
with things whether he knows how to do it or not. In mid-November, at the church Stop Hunger Now event, Clayton stuck right with us measuring, filling and packing meals for 10,000 people. And his most frequent question is one he asks almost every week when it is “our” day: “Nana, will you read this book to me?” Evelyn, my only granddaughter, came into our family over four years ago through the foster care system. She was the most beautiful little girl with big eyes and a winning smile. She also fell into the habit of helping when she agreed to serve as a crew member on the Lady’s Slipper batteau when we were shorthanded. We have an unfinished family quilt to stitch together while we share hopes and dreams. Her questions are usually few and far between but when she asks one, it takes a while to answer. I am so proud of her for graduating from PHS last June. Now, she is a beautiful young woman. Yep, those are my grandchildren! All six of them enliven my days. All six of them inspire me to continue writing meaningful stories about adventures of the Lady’s Slipper batteau. All six of them teach me to make time for the important things. All six of them remind me that I have a responsibility to lead by example demonstrating how to practice servanthood. All six of them are eager to learn and willing to be involved in their community. There truly is something grand about the experience of being a grandparent. I am convinced it’s the grandchildren. An Egyptian proverb
reads “Dearer than our children are the children of our children.” I couldn’t agree more. Gail Timberlake is a former Powhatan High School teacher, past Powhatan Christmas Mother and an avid county volunteer. She is also the author of two books, The Rescue of the Lady Slipper and Every Life’s Worth Saving. *** Do you have a story about your grandchildren you would like to share? We’d love to hear it! tell Joseph and Mary of the angels, the message, the glory and the music. Then they go throughout the town, spreading the word of their extraordinary experience. This is an age-old tale, one I have heard many times in Christmas Pageants and TV repeats of Charlie Brown’s Christmas. Only recently have I found this secret hidden in the story. These shepherds were given a message, a clue to an ancient mystery: “You will find the baby wrapped in a blanket, lying in a feeding trough in a barn.” But they didn’t know which barn, or which baby. They had to go and look. There was a crazy latenight search between the going and the find-
ing that we read about in Luke 2. What if one night I went running through all the barns in Powhatan, looking for a baby in one of the feed troughs? Surely people would think me crazy. Did these men ever think themselves silly, or consider giving up? Did they get tired of knocking on doors? This holiday season, if we feel that God is again working His mysterious ways, if we are wondering where He is, if we are looking for Him – knocking on doors – let us remember that we are in good company. These shepherds – the very first ones to hear the news about Jesus’ birth – they were seekers, too. The story of these shepherds is the story of
us all. God sends us a beautiful message, telling us to go out and search; and if we don’t give up looking, He promises that we will find what we are looking for. Sure, we may knock on a few doors that give no answer. We may try and come up empty. But we will find Jesus. It’s a promise. Perhaps he will once again turn up in a place we least expect, in a barn among the cattle and donkeys, there in the mess, among us. Remarkable winning streak continues Indians for Powhatan High wrestling program come up short against Knights By Bruce Wells Sports Editor
Powhatan wrestling Coach Travis Keely calls it “The Wall of Champions.” It’s a wall inside the wrestling room at Powhatan High School, covered with the awards that came with sweat, sacrifice and a whole lot of hard work. Nine Jefferson District team championships; 26 individual district champions and 10 VHSL AA all-state wrestlers. “It’s a sight to see,” said Keely, who along with Coach Lee Richardson, is one of the archi-
tects behind the success of the PHS wrestling program. Since Keely’s arrival at PHS in 2006, the wrestling program has been the winningest sports program at Powhatan. “We are 9 years undefeated as a team in all district matches (48-0), we’ve never been defeated in district,” Keely said. “No other sports team at PHS can make that claim.” That success has continued into this season. The Indians wrestlers started the season off in dramatic fashion, beating Fluvanna and Louisa on Dec. 1 at the Waynesboro Giant
Classic. Powhatan beat Fluvanna 5130, and Louisa 69-18 to start the season off at 2-0 in the Jefferson district. By going 2-0 in the Jefferson district the PHS Wrestling team now has a 9 year undefeated streak in ALL district matches and has never been beaten by any team in the Southside or Jefferson district, ever. The Indians followed up with a sweep against the Dinwiddie and Armstrong teams at the Dinwiddie Quad on Dec. 5. Powhatan beat Din-

Wrestlers off to a strong start Middle school and club programs enjoying early season success By Bruce Wells Sports Editor
The Powhatan Youth Wrestling Club and the Powhatan Middle School team are just one month into the wrestling season and as they continue to train and prepare for the upcoming VA Dual Nationals, VAWA State Championships and the East Coast Nationals, both programs are already enjoying great early suc-
cess. On Dec. 5 at Dinwiddie High school the Powhatan High school Varsity wrestling team, sub varsity wrestling team and middle school club team from the Blackhawk wrestling club went head to head against Dinwiddie and the Armstrong High School team from Richmond. The match marked the first time that an event has been planned that featured all of the different wrestling teams compete as a county vs. county, club vs. club event. PHS, Powhatan Middle School and the Powhatan Youth Wrestling Club all defeated the Dinwiddie programs. Dinwiddie, a Division 3 school and perennial Central
Region wrestling contender was outwrestled on every level as the Powhatan wrestling programs accomplished the sweep. With the strong performances by all the wrestlers at Dinwiddie and at several tournaments already this season, so far 15 wrestlers have captured 1st place, 15 second place and 8 more third place at three different tournaments. The coaches of the youth and middle school program, Mike, Rich, Jerry, Dan, Gene, Matt, Lam, Zacharia, Ken, Ben, Michael, and Chad will now continue to fine tune their wrestlers as they attempt to build on the early season success.

BUCKINGHAM When senior guard Tyler Allen drilled a three-pointer on the Indians first possession of last Thursday’s game at Buckingham High, there was a palpable sense in the air that the Indians might be on their way to an easy, blow-out victory. But several minutes later, Buckingham’s Tariq Bartee hit a midrange jumper to put the Knights on top 11-10. Although it seemed like your average two-point play at the time, Bartee’s jumper actually held a fair amount of significance: it gave the the Knights a lead they would not relinquish at any point during the rest of the contest. The Indians kept the game relatively close in the first two quarters, but the Knights - who outscored the Indians 43-27 in the second half - sent Powhatan back east on the losing end of a 76-51 outcome. The Indians hung tough over the first quarter of play, thanks, in part, to some nifty shooting by senior Tyler Allen. Allen (who will be playing baseball at UVA next spring) had five of his team’s 14 points, and Powhatan trailed by a mere four points heading into the second quarter. But that’s when the athleticism of the Knights’ starting five - coupled with some sloppy ball handling by the Indians - allowed Buckingham to widen their advantage a bit. Powhatan scored only eight points in the second quarter, and the

Knights took a comfortable 33-24 lead into the dank confines of home locker room at Buckingham High School. Powhatan shot under 50-percent in the first half (11-of-26), and things would only get more frustrating for them over the final two quarters of play. By the time the fourth quarter came around, the Knights possessed a healthy 59-36 lead a lead that was aided by a 28-6 run over the last 6 minutes of the third quarter. The Indians trailed by as many as 31 points late in the fourth quarter before eventually falling by 25. “I thought that Buckingham did a good job of using their speed athleticism to force some turnovers against us,” said Coach Steve Washburn. “I think that our effort was good early but I believe we got frustrat-
ed early in the second half after some bad possessions on both ends of the floor.” When asked what his team needs to improve on in the coming weeks, Washburn touched on two of the most fundamental aspects of the game. “We need to get much better on the defensive end and do a better job of rebounding,” continued Washburn. “We gave way too many secondchance points during the game.” Senior Chris DeLeon led the Indians with 10 points and sunk four of his 13 shots from the floor. He was the only Powhatan player to reach double digits. Allen contributed seven points, five of which came in the first quarter alone. Last night, the Indians took on former Southside District foe Prince Edward in a game that took place too late to be featured in this week’s publica-
tion. They’ll continue their out-of-district schedule tonight against the Goochland Bulldogs at Goochland High. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 and will be preceded by a junior varsity game. Coaches Keely and Richardson both feel that the Indians can return to win the Jefferson District again this year if the team stays healthy. The Indians have several new wrestlers that will make great additions to the team. Although several former 3-4 year wrestlers decided not to wrestle this year; with these new transfers and returning wrestlers the Indians should once again be strong contenders in the Jefferson District.

If he goes two or three innings, he will require one day of rest. If he goes four to seven, he will need two days of rest. The more days rest he takes, the more innings he can pitch when he returns. After two days’ rest, he can two innings. Three days, three innings, and after four innings, he can pitch to the limit of the rule. The VHSL also added a penalty to the rule. Unfortunately for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy, the Knights drew Amelia Academy to open their home basketball season last Tuesday evening. The taller, deeper and more athletic Patriots rolled over the BSH squad 73-44 to put the Knights at 0-2 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference. The Patriots ran up a 14-3 first-quarter lead and then began to cycle through their very deep bench; enabling them to pit six players at over 6’4“ against only one for Blessed Sacrament (Brandon Waldorf.) Controlling the boards, and with a stifling defense making it difficult for the Knights to get open shots in their set offense, the Patriots took a 34-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the final quarter Blessed Sacrament began to show some of their potential. Thomas Murphy knocked down the Knights first three pointer at 27-57 to ignite a 22 point final stanza for the home team. Murphy dialed in another long-distance shot on his next trip back down court and arched in a third three at 34-64 and a fourth at 37-67. Jake Waldrop added to the three point barrage as the Knights took the final quarter 22-18. Murphy led the Knights with 17 points, with Waldorf contributing 11 and Sam Drewicz adding nine.— Richard Carrier

Hey Eddie, I’m having a strange problem with my ’98 Ford Focus. The car is old, but only has 72,000 miles on it. The problem is a recurring no start issue. It just won’t turn over. Before this happens I always have a “warning.” The parking brake light in the dash comes on. When this happens, I know the car will not start for about 1 hour. I can go for weeks without a problem. Then I have the problem for two days in a row. I’ve replaced the starter and the battery and all the connections on the battery. The starter and solenoid are clean and tight. I can jump the terminals on the starter solenoid with a screwdriver to make the car start and then it works fine for a few more starts. Do you think my new starter has a bad solenoid or do I have a major wiring problem? Frank Internet When the car won’t start is when it needs to be tested. I’m guessing by the work you’ve already done that you have some tools and testing equipment. The next time your car doesn’t start check the ignition wire (smaller wire) at the starter solenoid with a DVOM meter or test light. Have somebody hold the key to the start position. You should have battery voltage at the ignition wire. If you have battery voltage your solenoid isbad.Ifyoudonothavebatteryvoltage you have a bad ignition switch (not key switch) or a broken wire between the ignition switch and starter solenoid. I hope this helps. Good luck.
Hey Eddie, I have a 2002 Dodge Neon with 85,000 miles. Lately I’ve noticed a sweet smelling odor. My friends said my engine has to be leaking antifreeze. However, there have been no leaks under my car. I park in my garage every night and the floor is clean and dry. Any ideas? Sue Powhatan Sue, You didn’t mention if you’ve been having to add coolant to your radiator. Wait until the engine is cold and then check the radiator to see if the coolant is low. (Never open the radiator cap if the engine is warm!) If it’s low, have your coolant system pressure tested at your repair shop. I’m guessing your radiator has a small leak getting coolant on the radiator cooling fins and then evaporating from the heat of the radiator. This is probably causing the sweet smell you are noticing. A small coolant leak in a radiator sometimes won’t leak until the engine runs a while and builds up pressure. This would explain the lack of coolant on your garage floor. Trivia: What car did the two streetwise cops drive in the 1975-1979 TV show Starsky and Hutch?
