Board debates banning ‘adult stores’ By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

Although there were numerous items on the agenda at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting – including the paving of unpaved roads as per VDOT standards, the pending departure of Interim

County Administrator Elmer Hodge, and the conversion of Parks and Recreation employee Warren Tooley from part-time to full-time – two of the more interesting discussion topics were the fate of the War Memorial Building and the potential zoning ban on any businesses deemed “adult.”

Constructed in 1953, the War Memorial Building, located on Skaggs Road in the Powhatan Village, has a long history in the county and continues to rent out space for events ranging from Saturday basketball games to Masonsee Board page 6A

In an ideal world, where money grew on trees and/or citizens gladly embraced tax hikes, the Powhatan County School Board would hire three elementary math specialists (to help raise SOL scores), three additional school resource officers (to make schools safer), and hire back dozens of the hundredor-so teaching assistants and other staff they’ve let go over the past several years. However, keeping the still-sluggish economy in mind, the board approved a budget scenario at last week’s meeting that was considerably more bare-bones than its members would have preferred. Still, one agreement the board did reach (in a 4-1 vote) was that they’d like to all staff to receive a two percent raise. “I believe two percent would breathe new life into this entire staff,” said District 2’s see Raise page 3A

Bones found at home identified According to the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Department, the bones found recently at the home of Powhatan resident Louis Nigro have been identified as those of as one fox and two raccoons. Investigators recovered the bones during a search of Nigro’s property on Feb. 11, days after the Jeter Road resident was charged in relation to the death of two dogs found under a tarp in his yard. The dogs belonged to a neighbor of Nigro’s, who had reported them missing several days earlier. Nigro has been charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals. He will be back in court on April 19. — Roslyn Ryan

hen a group of men knocked on a Powhatan woman’s door recently, offering to pave her driveway, the sales pitch they gave her was pretty convincing. They had just finished another job, they told her, and had some material left over. They would be willing to do her driveway for a deeply discounted rate just to use up the extra, they explained, to help both of them out. It seemed almost too good to be true. And it was. By the time the men were finished, the price they had originally

Forestry Department’s 4 p.m. burn law is now in effect It’s almost spring time in Virginia and with the warming temperatures, gusty winds and lower humidity, the Virginia Department of Forestry’s 4 p.m. Burn Law goes into effect. From Feb. 15 through April 30, it is illegal to have an open air fire within 300 feet of the woods or dry grass before 4 p.m. A violation of this law is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition to the criminal violation, those who allow a fire to escape are liable for the cost of suppressing the fire as well as any damage caused to others’ property.

quoted the women had risen significantly. Worse, the professional paving job they had promised amounted to little more than flattening a few loads of fine gravel – commonly known as crusher run – and calling the job complete. Sadly, thousands of dollars later, the woman realized that she had fallen victim to one of the more common construction scams homeowners face. The details can vary– some offer help with roofing, or even tree work – but all involve the same basic scheme: a worker or crew approaches a home – senior citizens are frequent targets – and somehow convinces the homeowner to allow them to perform a service or repair. If the job is done at all, the cost is typically

more than originally stated. To Powhatan Undersheriff Chris Dehart, this kind of swindle is nothing new. In one case several years ago, he remembers, two men strong-armed an elderly man into allowing them to do some paving at his home and then essentially held him hostage until they had gotten his money. Even when the perpetrators don’t go that far, said Dehart, they still often leave the homeowner feeling victimized. Fortunately, he said, there are several ways to prevent yourself from falling prey to these types of schemes. First, ask for identification

Powhatan pooches earn top honors on dog show circuit Westminster event was just one more stop for this talented canine twosome Contributed report For the second consecutive year, Powhatan was well represented at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and affiliated shows held in New York City earlier this month. Powhatan residents Scott Tomassi and Michelle Soave made the trip to NYC with two of their Havanese dogs, Angus and Chanel. Angus, whose registered name is Champion Ji-Jo’s and Shatara’s High Voltage, competed for Best of Breed at the West-

minster show. Although he did not win the breed, Soave and Tomassi were very pleased with his performance. “Angus showed extremely well for me and received many compliments from ringside observers,” said Soave, who is a professional handler. “Angus obtained his AKC Championship before he was even seven months old. He does not turn one year old until later this month, but he certainly held his own against much more seasoned competitors at Westminster. Angus is still very much a baby and is just beginning what is shaping up to be a very successful show career,” added Soave. Indeed, just days after competing at Westminster, Angus

(named after AC/DC guitarist Angus Young) won Best of Breed at a Maryland show and was awarded the Third Place in a very competitive Toy Group. Two days before the Westminster Show, Soave also showed Chanel, a six-month Havanese female whom Soave and Tomassi bred, at the prestigious Havanese Club of Greater New York specialty show, held at the Hotel Pennsylvania. Chanel, whose registered name is Shatara’s Haute Couture, was judged to be both the Best Puppy and Best in Sweepstakes. The show was Chanel’s first, as it fell on her sixmonth birthday, her first day of eligibility to compete in an AKC pointed

show. Tomassi explained that he and Soave had even more reason to be proud of Chanel’s wins. “Two years ago, Michelle showed our dog Madison, who is Chanel’s father, at the New York Havanese Show. Like Chanel, Madison also won Best Puppy and Best in Sweepstakes. Each dog’s wins meant a lot to us, but to have Chanel follow in her father’s footsteps like this is especially meaningful to us.”

and references. Anyone going door to door in Powhatan must first register with the Sheriff’s office, so a quick call will confirm whether or not the person has followed the proper procedure. Also, consider the usual hallmarks of a professional organization, most of whom will not knock or your door, or say that they “just happened to notice” some damage to your property while driving by. Finally, trust your instincts. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. “The point is that anyone who shows up that you have not called, it’s better to tell them to leave,” said Dehart. “If they don’t, call the Sheriff’s Office.” If you want to verify that a person offering you a service is legitimate, call the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office at (804) 598-5656. If you feel in any way threatened, or if a person refuses to leave your property, call 911 immediately.

• Be suspicious if you are asked to pay on in cash – Most reputable contractors will take checks or credit cards. • Watch out for a company that is from out of state – Look at the truck the representative travels in. If it is unmarked or has an out-of-state license plate, be cautious. Also, scammers can purchase disposable cell phones to provide a local number in the area they are soliciting. Raise: BOS must sign off James Kunka, noting that school employees haven’t had any raises in five years. The board also hopes to re-fill five of the teaching assistant positions that had been lost in recent years, placing one T.A. at each of the county’s schools. The board is also hopeful that the Sheriff’s Office budget will allow for additional resource officers to be placed in the schools. Nothing is definite yet, however. “It’s all very tentative,” said Rick Cole, school board chairman. “We have to wait to see what the Board of Supervisors will do.”

Court case: Judge found that Powhatan schools had violated the Fourteenth Amendment Continued from page 1A

– change public policy. Fifty years ago, a judge in the United States Court of Appeals found the Powhatan County Public School system had been violating the law of equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment by requiring black students to file applications to the “white school” (i.e. Powhatan Elementary and High School) with a “Pupil Placement Board.” Somehow, conveniently, the school board office never seemed to have the proper application forms on hand when parents of black students would drop by to pick one up; and if black families did manage to get their hands on one of the forms, the placement board would find an error with the application, saying it hadn’t been filled out properly and, without a proper application, well, what could they do? Nine years after Brown v. Board had declared racial-based school segregation to be

unconstitutional, Powhatan County, like most of the other counties in Virginia and so many other localities across the country, was still doing everything it could to resist integration. In August of 1962, the parents of 65 African-American children filed a suit against the county, after spending the better part of the spring and summer trying to get their children enrolled in the “white school.” Darrick Bell, who was 10 years old at the time and is a first cousin to Edward Alvin, remembers Pocahontas Elementary, “the black school,” as being, in a lot of ways, a pretty nice place. “The teachers were very nurturing,” remembers Bell, who now lives in Chesterfield County and is retired from the adult education and social work field. “They were very demanding. There was a pride in the community and the desire for kids to understand that you needed to produce. They used to say that you [being black] would have to

do twice as much to get half as far. And so the teachers pushed us.” Still, Bell remembers the books as being secondhand, outdated, castoffs from the Powhatan School. He remembers being asked by a white

said, ‘You signed for your children to go down to the white school, didn’t you?’ and my mom said, ‘Yeah,’ and the lady said, ‘Well, ya’ll can’t get any more credit here.’ My mom said, ‘OK, how much do I owe

“There was a pride in the community and the desire for kids to understand that you needed to produce. They used to say that you [being black] would have to do twice as much to get half as far. And so the teachers pushed us.” Former Powhatan student Sandra Morris Kemp boy one day in the restroom whether or not he had a tail. He recalls the bus driver refusing to let him ride on the white kids’ bus (the integration of the buses had to be decided in a separate court case) and he remembers his mother being denied credit at Maxey’s Store when the clerk learned she had enrolled her children in the white school. “My mom went up to the counter and the lady

you?’ . . . My mom took the $12 and some cents out of her pocketbook and paid her, and left the groceries that she had on the counter that she was gonna buy there. And that was it for Maxey’s store for us.” Sandra Morris Kemp, who switched to the integrated school for her last two years of high school and became the first African-American graduate of Powhatan High School, doesn’t re-

member experiencing a lot of overt racism or hostility. However, she says being the only black student in a class of 19 wasn’t easy. “I didn’t have much of a social life,” she remembers. “I didn’t go to a prom. There wasn’t very much interaction or people talking to you. It was just you went to class, you did your subjects. I was very isolated. It wasn’t them pulling my hair or calling me names or anything. It was just benign neglect, like ‘You’re not here.’” Still, Kemp is proud of the role that she and peers played in making desegregation a reality in the county. Now highly educated, with degrees from VCU and the University of Maryland, Kemp remains interested in her educational roots. She’s even travelled to the National Archives in Philadelphia to research Edward Alvin Bell v. the School Board of Pow-

hatan County (where boxes upon boxes of material relating to the case are stored) and keeps mementos of the case – such as her sister Alcibia’s “Pioneer Student Award” from the NAACP – in her home office. Something of a scholar of Virginia’s “massive resistance” movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s – Senator Harry F. Byrd’s attempt to prevent desegregation of the schools – Kemp hopes that the true, first-hand accounts of desegregation won’t be lost to history. “I always think it would be nice if one day all the first [AfricanAmerican] graduates of each county would come together and form some sort of group and discuss how Brown v. Board affected each of us – because somebody from Richmond would have a different experience than Sandra Kemp from Powhatan, which is a rural community.”

ic Lodge meetings to private baby showers. It is also, it seems, something of a money pit. According to a presentation prepared by Utilities Director Chris Rapp, the county has sunk about $165,000 into maintaining the building in the past three years, greatly exceeding the revenue it has generated in that time. Board Chairman Barry Hodge called it “a black hole and said that the county “has many more pressing needs than keeping the War Memorial Building maintained

*** The supervisors also discussed an ordinance that would, for the most part, place a ban on selfstorage facilities, adult movie theaters, and adult bookstores. District 1 Supervisor David Williams suggested expanding the scope of this ordinance, ensuring that it also banned “adult stores such as Priscilla McCall’s and asked that a clear-delineation be made distinguishing between therapeutic massage clinics (staffed with state-licensed therapists) and so-called

massage parlors. District 4 Supervisor Bill Melton said he didn’t think the board should move too hastily to issue a blanket ban any type that could potentially be good, economically, for the county. District 3’s Barry Hodge said that along with economic impact, the board had to also consider the “general health, safety, and morals of the community. “We have to consider the tone of the county, Hodge said. “[Powhatan] is not the Bronx, it’s not New York, it’s not South Florida, it’s not L.A.

Return of 4th Friday concert series features a few changes Contributed report The Powhatan Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Powhatan’s 4th Friday will return for a 2013 concert series. This year’s schedule will feature four events, beginning in April with the popular band Casper. The event will be very similar in every aspect to the previous 4th Fridays with the exception of the location and the predictable dates. The new series will be titled: Powhatan 4th Fridays – Sometimes, in the Village all the time. This concert series will offer family and friends an opportunity to gather together and enjoy music, food and fun. The mission of the Powhatan Chamber is an association of business, professional and civic minded members who promote the free enterprise system, economic

growth and the prosperity of Powhatan County. This is an opportunity for the Chamber to fulfill the piece of our mission to give back to the community. So once again, local charities will receive part of the gate money and our local businesses will have a chance to promote. This is not a fundraiser for the Chamber, but the goal is to make the event sustainable so we can provide this for the community for many years to come. Shows will be held on these dates: Friday, April 19 Casper Friday, May 24 The Pizazz Band Friday, June 14 Emma White Friday, Sep 13 Hotcakes Band If you would like more information, please contact Iris Woodson at (804) 598-2636.

“This is a server-based system, and it was originally designed to handle a much smaller-scale network than the one we have now.” Powhatan County IT specialist Mike Cannon

Can you hear me now? After months of trouble, county IT department appears to have a fix for phones By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A few minutes into a call about what has been causing the ongoing phone trouble at the Powhatan County Administration Building, county IT specialist Mike Cannon’s voice suddenly went silent. “Sorry,” he said, calling back a minute later. “I think the call may have gotten dropped.” It wasn’t exactly a surprise. Dropped calls, staticky lines and other similar issues have been a problem for employees at both the county administra-

tion building and the courthouse for several months. The root cause of the ongoing issue, according to Cannon, is that the county has simply outgrown a system that was not designed to handle its current workload. “This is a serverbased system,” Cannon explained, “and it was originally designed to handle a much smallerscale network than the one

we have now.” Over the years, the growing needs of the county staff – combined with ever-shrinking funds – meant that the county IT staff was asked to get more out of the network while operating on a shoestring budget. The result, as one might guess, was not ideal: a network stretched dangerously thin, described by the IT staff in their recent com-

ments to the board as “at the end of its life.” Fortunately, said Cannon, there are options, including an eventual move to fiber, which would hold benefits to both the county administration and the surrounding business community. For now, says Cannon, the plan is to hook into an existing “microwave link system,” a solution that will offer what Cannon describes as “a robust network” capable of handling the county’s needs. Going with the microwave link system “is a solid fix” said Cannon, but fiber is still the ultimate goal. “It’s really the way everyone is going,” he said. “It’s a good solution.”

State park is the work of many hands By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As we recently learned, Powhatan’s State Park on the Historic James will soon begin welcoming visitors from near and far to the county. Looking at the project, it’s tough to say which is more exciting: that we now have our very own state park to enjoy or the fact that it is expected to bring so many visitors to Powhatan. Both of these things are, of course, wonderful news. As we prepare for the park’s opening – expected to come this spring – we feel it is important to offer thanks to all those who worked tirelessly, often fighting an uphill battle, to make the park a reality. The list of individual names would take up most of this page, but they know who they are and should be tremendously proud of their accomplishment. Special recognition goes to Del. Lee Ware, R-Powhatan, whose recently approved budget amendments did what it took to push the project over the finish line. It’s been a long time coming, but we have a feeling it will be worth the wait. *** As we detail in an article on the front page of this week’s paper, spring tends to bring more than just pretty flowers and warmer days. The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Department is once again warning residents about scam artists who may be targeting the area in the coming months, offering things like driveway paving or tree work for tantalizingly low prices. Sadly, these swindlers are very adept at preying on the most vulnerable among us, often taking advantage of the elderly or the homebound. The only real way to combat this kind of thing is to do your homework and make sure those you hire to do work are properly licensed. And, of course, remember this above all: If you are uncomfortable at all, at any point, it is your right to ask for credentials, references or to simply say “no thanks.” *** It may have been a soggy start, but local high school spring sports did indeed commence last week — at least tryouts did. Soon, many of us will find ourselves checking the box scores to see how our local baseball and softball teams did the night before, and following the progress of our rising track and tennis stars. A number of programs from both Powhatan High School and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot are expected to do big things this year, including the reigning state champion Powhatan Indians baseball team. We hope all of our Powhatan pooches earn top honors on dog show circuit readers get to take in at least a few games. We’re willing to bet that, after a few hours watching the passion, intensity and talent of our local young athletes, you’ll be glad you did.

Joining the fight against climate change By Frances Crutchfield Contributing columnist

Sometimes we wondered if we should remind Mother Nature that we had planned a rally to save her from Global Warming. Organized by the Hip-Hop congress, 350.org and the Sierra Club, the event took place Frbruary 17, a freezing cold day. The temperature remained in the low thirties, with snow on the highway shoulders, black ice hiding on the roads, ferocious winds, and even a few snowflakes falling. Nevertheless, in the largest cli-

MY POINT OF VIEW

Post Office represents best and worst of our government By Jason Moore Contributing columnist

Much was made of the Post Office’s decision to end most Saturday deliveries. Some saw the decision as a needed change by a decaying government agency, others as an affront to the Constitution and others as an attack on unions. I view the Postal Service (USPS) as a microcosm of all that is good and bad about the federal government. The USPS helped develop our nation, possesses a muddled record on social engineering efforts and as failed as an employer. Establishment of post offices and post road was one of the few powers expressly delegated to the federal government in the Constitution. The Founding Fathers deemed a postal service so important that they ranked it with Congress’ authority to declare war, regulate commerce and coin money. The main proponent of a federal postal service was Benjamin Franklin. Franklin served as Deputy Postmaster General for British North America prior to the Revolution. Franklin selected branch locations in the colonies, including Canada, determined the post routes and established the first monthly mail packet between England and America. Franklin understood how important communication was to good governance and commerce. The rest of the Founding Fathers

agreed. They understood that the postal service stimulated commerce and connected the far reaching sections of the country by facilitating easy and cheap communications. They allowed mail to be carried to and from anywhere in the country POD. Westward moving families wrote their eastern kin about the West’s beauty. Western merchants communicated with eastern wholesalers. Such communications helped westward expansion and business growth. Yes, the government spent more to deliver the letter than the service cost, and it bore the risk of nonpayment. Some call this a classic example of government waste or usurpation of a service which could be performed by a private company. I view it as a necessary risk. The government subsidized commerce and private communications with the goal of bring the nation together and stimulating greater commerce. The best example of how this benefited the nation was the USPS former practice of free newspaper delivery. If newspapers allowed their articles to be reproduced in other forms for free, then the newspapers would be delivered for free. The NY Tribune would be forwarded to St. Louis where the St. Louis Dispatch would reprint Tribune articles for Midwestern readers. A Richmond Times article could be reprinted in the New Or-

leans Picayune. The flow of information helped people feel part of our large nation. After all until the Civil War, the average person lived their entire life with 15 miles of their home. The USPS also helped introduce art and history into the daily life of most Americans. Stamps depict important historical figures, events, places, pieces of art or wildlife. In 1893, the first commemorative stamps were issued for the Colombian Exposition helping to raise awareness of the event and gener-

Sunday operations until 1912. At that time, religious leaders, noticing a decline in parishioners, pressured the federal government to end the practice. Such actions raise the issue of separation of church and state with both sides taking solace in some part of USPS history. The post office, also, represented one of the few non-segregated public buildings in the South. This practice ended in 1913 with the election of Woodrow Wilson. Wilson was the first southern president in over 60 years. He segregated the USPS and purged black workers from the federal government by requiring all new job applicants include a picture with their employment applications. The worst side of the USPS was represented in the Spoils System. When the Post Office Department was established in 1792, the Postmaster General was recognized as a cabinet member. The position became one of the most important cabinet positions in the 19th century, because of political patronage. Roughly 75 percent of all federal employees worked for the USPS during the 19th century. There were more postal employees than soldiers with the exception of the four wars fought in that century. Every community had at least one, if not more, post offices, and the position of local postmaster was highly sought. Selection of a new postmaster depended on political connections. So, if you were the Whig precinct captain for Macon, you won the precinct and a Whig won the White House, you were the Macon postmaster for the next four years. It sounds ridiculous, but this is how the post office worked until the civil service reforms of President Chester Arthur. Some would say the USPS again represents all that is negative about the federal government. It is inefficient, it cannot

compete with private sector companies and it cannot afford its retirement/benefits system. Some of these problems can be blamed on politicians and history, while others are the brain child of the USPS leadership. First, the system was not designed to be efficient and politicians will not allow it to be efficient. Powhatan has one post office for 29,000 people, while Matthews County has ten for 15,000 people. Politicians won’t allow the closing of post offices, even if it makes sense. Politicians oppose termination of Saturday services, even if such action makes the USPS more sustainable. Second, the USPS was designed to facilitate commerce and communications; it was not designed to make a profit. If the government wants the USPS to make money, then Congress should divest itself of regulatory power and ask Warren Buffet to rule the place. Third, the high cost of employees’ benefits is price we pay for allowing government officials to collectively bargain with public sector employee unions. By reviewing the 221 year history of the USPS, we can see that it has represented the best and worst of the federal government. It was started to ferment commerce, communications and knowledge. It has been used as a lavatory for social engineering. He has become a slowly dying agency ridiculed for its inability to adapt to modern changes. As I said at the beginning, the USPS represents all that is good, bad and ugly in the federal government. Jason Moore is a Powhatan County supervisor representing District 2. “So Many Clean Action Options, So Little Time.” Save the Earth, not corporate profits. Renewable Energy is Homeland Security. Some people carried small, white windmills that twirled furiously as the wind crinkled our posters and blew banners and flags across our faces. As we drew near the stage, we could hear music, which grew louder a few minutes before noon, when the speakers began. We huddled close together to avoid the wind. We danced and jumped up and down, trying to keep our feet warm. Someone said, “Rock and roll for climate control.” Van Jones, former green jobs adviser to President Obama, said we were facing the most important job of our lives. He spoke of future events scheduled in warmer weather. He said the hot days might get hotter and we had better set aside a little bail money. We gladly hugged one another when he asked us to do so. He said this was the “most important game humanity has ever played.” He told President Obama and Vice President Biden that all the good they had done would be wiped out if they didn’t act now. He said the decision was in their hands. He said constructing the pipeline was like jabbing a dirty needle in our planet. To the next generation, he said, “Stop being chumps!” Chief Jacqueline Thomas of the Saik’uz First Nation thanked us

for coming and called on us to make politicians do the right thing. She said, “When we take care of the land, the land will take care of us. When we destroy the land, we destroy ourselves.” She said politicians were acting “like the economy is a human being.” Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island said, “This is our time. This is our choice. This is our moment.” He said we wanted to say to our children, not “we failed you,” but “Yes, we did.” We chanted, “Yes, we did.” Crystal Lameman of Beaver Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, Canada, said, “We cannot eat money and we cannot drink oil.” She said our environment was speaking to us and our Mother [Earth] would fight back. When she addressed, “my white relatives, my yellow relatives, my black relatives,” someone said, referring to the cold, “Today, we’re all blue!” We laughed and kept bending our knees and moving our feet to keep warm. Some people shared snacks such as yogurt-covered pretzels and dark chocolate bars with raspberries. Our bottles of cold water remained untouched. Someone whispered that we needed to march while we could still move. The final speaker was Sierra Club’s Executive Director, Michael Brune, who had been arrested last week for an earlier protest against the Keystone XL Pipeline. He urged President Obama to use his pen to reject the pipeline. He said, “We are strong. We are powerful.”

We cheered. At last we bagan to move, as an unweildy 80,000-leged monster, with a very slow pow-wow-style step in time with the music. The drums reminded us of Mother Nature’s heartbeat as our feet touched the cold, wet ground and absorbed its temperature. With frozen feet and drippy noses, we walked on. We held signs and banners with first one hand and then the other in order to keep one in a warm pocket. We pulled our scarves over our faces, clung to one another and followed our Sierra Club Banner and American Flags, which undulated in the wind above the crowd. We chanted as if the President in Florida could hear us: “Hey, Obama, we don’t want no pipeline drama.” “Hey, Obama, we don’t want no climate drama.” “Show me what Democracy looks like. This is what Democracy looks like.” As we neared the White House, we were instructed to hold the black side of the posters over our heads. “You are a dirty, greasy pipeline oozing by the president’s house,” we were told. We held the black and and then the white sides up as instructed for arial photographs. Finally, we rolled and folded posters under our arms so that both hands could be in pockets. We were able to walk faster, but the weather became no warmer as we made our way back to the bus. Powhatan resident Francis Critchfield is a frequent contributor to Powhatan Today.

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Lady Knights fall in title game By Ben Orcutt Contributing Writer

The Lady Patriots of Amelia Academy used their height advantage to make it tough for BSH during Saturday’s VCC tournament championship game at Richard Bland College.

Cool under pressure

PETERSBURG – The old adage that it’s difficult to beat a team three times in a season evidently doesn’t apply to Amelia Academy. The Lady Patriots did just that when they defeated Blessed Sacrament Huguenot 63-34 in the 2013 Virginia Commonwealth Conference varsity girls’ tournament championship on Saturday at Richard Bland College. With the win, Amelia Academy improved to 24-6 on the year, while the Lady Knights fell to 16-5. Both teams extended their seasons by earning berths in this week’s Division 3 state tournament of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Entering Saturday’s contest, the Lady Knights knew they were in for an uphill battle against Amelia Academy. When the teams met for the first time this season in December, the Lady Patriots posted a 93-33 victory and added a 64-43 win in

January. The Lady Patriots sport one of the tallest teams in the area with 6-4 junior reserve Andrea Anicic topping the list, followed by 6-2 juniors Tamara Novic – who didn’t play in the championship game – and Moona Hamalainen, then 6-0 senior Kristyn Carney and 5-10 senior Lexi Sollars. The tallest player for BSH is 5-10 senior Katie Clarke, who was the only Lady Knight in double figures on Saturday with 13 points. Hamalainen paced the Lady Patriots with 16 points and 17 rebounds, followed by senior Megan Jacoby who scored 15 points and added six assists and five steals, and Sollars, who finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. With their pressure defense and dominance on the glass, the Lady Patriots jumped out to a 19-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in extending the lead to 37-14 at

Although it’s not his official nickname, first-year Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls varsity basketball coach Luke Bobbitt could very well be called “Cool Hand Luke.” Bobbitt, 26, has a calm demeanor on the bench, occasionally standing and exhorting the Lady Knights to execute. He’s not given to yelling and screaming, but is more the steady tactician, taking notice of every detail and ready to respond. That was the case when BSH was down 49-45 to Tidewater Academy with less than two minutes to play in the semifinals of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament Friday at Richard Bland

The Pied Piper of power Former cop swaps handcuffs and nightstick for barbells and dumbbells By Fred Jeter Contributing Writer

Burly Kenneth James has swapped his handcuffs and night stick for a gym full of barbells and dumbbells. Former Chesterfield County police Sgt. James has become personal trainer/coach James. The 51-year-old with the Popeye forearms and boulder shoulders is pushing to change Powhatan to “Power-tan.” Working from Powhatan YMCA at Fighting Creek Park, James is lead trainer for the Powhatan Power Lifting Club – an iron pumpin’ squad including his wife, Katina, a County school bus driver. Since retiring last year from Chesterfield Police after 27 years on the beat, James has focused his considerable energy on building muscle – his own and that of his club members and clients at the Y. Setting a shining example, the ex-cop recently established a World Record with a 573-pound (260 kilos) dead lift at an AAU Power-lifting competition at the Holiday InnAirport in eastern Henrico.

The bespectacled, crew-cut James was competing in the Law/ Fire/Military Division, 50-54 age group, 242pound class. “My goal in the dead lift is at least 600,” he said. “I’ve done that in the gym and I should be able to get it next year.” He noted that his world mark was set despite a tender hamstring, resulting from a training injury. James carries an ultra-thick 230, or so, pounds on his 5-9 frame, with only about 15 percent body fat. While some view retirement as an excuse to kick back and take it easy, James is pouring on the coals. “I’ve got much more time now to train,” he said. “You work a lot of long hours on the force and you are often sleep deprived. “You always hear about police and their coffee and donuts … well, I did the coffee … but usually with a MetRx (protein) bar instead of the donuts.” Now, with a refreshing eight hours sleep per night and at least 200 grams of protein consumption a day, he feels he’s growing stronger as he cruises into his 50’s. Power-lifting consists of three lifts – dead lift, squat and bench press. At competitions, an athlete can contend for the overall crown or concentrate on one or two lifts. James’ AAU muscle-man titles date to 2003 when he posted a

national overall best total of 1,451 pounds for three lifts combined in the Law/Military division. A Chesterfield native, James was a 175pound offensive guard at Midlothian High (Class of ‘80) under football coach Gabe Hicks. Following a stint as an enlistee in U.S. Army and as Overnite truck driver, he took the oath to fight crime in Chesterfield. He began heavy lifting at Super Bodies on Route 10 and at Wolfgang’s on Hull Street Road. He has long caught double takes for his muscular frame. As a police officer he was routinely tested for both performance enhancing and euphoric drugs. “I was one of the first they chose to test; I’ve probably been tested more than anyone,” he said. “I passed every one. I would have been crazy to risk doing drugs … I’d have been fired, if caught, and that would have been the end of my career.” The AAU requires all lifters and body builders be tested for performance enhancers through urine analysis. He’s passed all the doping tests while continuing to set his sights on lifting records. Now that his lengthy career as a crime fighter has ended, James would like to flash a new calling card: Here’s introducing Powhatan’s Pied Piper of Power.

College. Bobbitt called a timeout to steady his charges. “The timeout, I just tried to settle them down,” he said following the Lady Knights 51-49 win over the Warriors. “I was like, ‘Just breathe. We’re down four but you’ve got plenty of time.’ We got the shot we wanted [a three-point attempt by Geena Landon]. She made it. Defensively we got after it and we were able to get another turnover, get another stop and then we got the basket [gamewinning drive by Katie Clarke who was fouled and completed the threepoint play].” While the Lady Knights have had several good wins his season,

Saturday’s win was perhaps the sweetest heading in the VCC tournament championship game. Bobbitt said. “It’s been pretty special all through the year and obviously this one’s the one that really counts so it was good to win that one,” he said. Bobbitt was hopeful that the win, which moved BSH to 16-4 on the year, might propel the Lady Knights to a first-round bye in this week’s Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 3 state tournament. Bobbitt grew up in Hanover County and played four years of basketball in the Patrick Henry High School program. “I was more of a three-point shooter, ball distributor, defensive

guy,” he said of his days of playing guard. A 2010 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in health and physical education, Bobbitt is a strong admirer of Rams’ head men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart. “Obviously I love VCU basketball and I try to bring a little bit of that havoc to the court with switching up defenses,” Bobbitt said. “I went to Shaka Smart’s coaching clinic right before the season started and that helped me a lot. I really enjoy their practice and the way Shaka runs his practices. They practice as they play – just that pace of the game and defensively and that’s what paid off this whole year is defense for us.” see Bobbitt page 3B

Bobbitt: ‘I like for people to play the game’ Geena,” Bobbitt said. “I feel like I’ve had games where I’ve really had to learn it on the fly. I’ve had to make some adjustments that I wasn’t prepared for and I know certain games that we got into foul trouble and we won the game easily in some of these games, but for me, I felt like I had been through a 90-minute P90X workout. “But it’s really helped me and I’ve gotten more comfortable in the huddle knowing what to tell them in timeouts and so I’ve

A former Dominion Power employee, Bobbitt’s contract expired at the end of 2011 and he was looking for a job. Last summer, BSH had an opening for a part-time position in physical education. Bobbitt was hired and also became the varsity girls basketball coach. His inaugural season has been quite a learning experience, he said. “I’ve seen all kinds of defenses with Katie and

grown all through the year. I know I still [have] a long way to go and these are a great group of girls for me to start with and so it’s been great for me just as an experience as a whole.” In practice, Bobbitt said he does a lot of explaining on how to react to various situations on the court to help prepare the Lady Knights to make split-second adjustments. “I like for people to be able to play the game,” he said. “I never liked when I played to have set

play after set play. I liked the little bit of the recklessness and I think it helps build their confidence because they get in these kind of moments like this [against Tidewater] and they still have composure to keep fighting and knowing where those gaps and stuff are to hit shots and stuff.” Heading toward the end of his first campaign as a head coach, Bobbitt has no regrets. “People are like, ‘Oh, are you ready for the season to end?’” he said. “And I’m like, ‘No way. I want to keep going with

it. I love it.’” Kimberly Robben, a junior in her third year on the BSH varsity, said Bobbitt plays with them during scrimmages, adding that, “He’s brought good energy.” Senior Haley O’Donnell, who also is in her third year on the BSH varsity, said she likes Bobbitt’s multiple defenses. “I like all of our defenses,” she said. “I think that’s fun to play because I like defense better.” Darlene Hall, a senior who is completing her fifth season as a BSH var-

sity player, said Bobbitt emphasizes the team aspect of the game. “I think he focuses more on the players, like every player on the team instead of specific ones to be like the stars,” she said. “So he gets everyone to contribute to the offense and defense.” By making practices fun and instilling in the Lady Knights a desire to play hard, it makes it easier for them to want to win for Bobbitt, Hall said. “Yes,” she said. “Definitely.”

the half. Amelia Academy pushed the lead to 30 with a 50-20 advantage at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Knights outscored the Lady Patriots 14-13 in the final period, but their only consolation was that they held Amelia Academy to its fewest points in the teams’ three meetings. While BSH didn’t come away with the championship trophy, they did take home their fair share of hardware. First-year coach Luke Bobbitt was named VCC coach of the year. The Lady Knights placed two players on the All-Conference second team in seniors Geena Landon and Darlene Hall. Clarke made first-team All-Conference for BSH and was joined by Hamalainen, Novic and Jacoby, who was named conference MVP. Clarke and Landon made the All-tournament team, along with Hamalainen and Jacoby, who also was named tournament MVP. BSH junior Kimberly Robben was named to the All-Academic team. In addition to their runner-up trophy for the tournament, the Lady Knights also were awarded a trophy for finishing tied for second in the regular season with Tidewater Academy. Standing outside the Lady Knights locker room following the awards ceremony, Bobbitt expressed his gratitude for being selected coach of the year. “Obviously I’m very proud and humbled by it but I give so much

credit to those 10 girls in there, he said. BSH senior guard Haley O’Donnell was pleased that Bobbitt received the award. “I think that’s really exciting and he definitely deserves it, she said. “So I’m really proud and happy for him. The highlight for her this season was scoring the 1,000th point of her career during the Christmas break, Clarke said. As for the Lady Patriots and head coach Frank Shanaberger, Clarke didn’t mince words. “They recruit foreign exchange students and the coach runs up the score and it’s not fair to us and honestly I’d say if they didn’t play with them they would have a much harder time to do that well, Clarke said. The recruitment of players is one of the reasons 5-6 Lady Knight starter Hall said she transferred from Amelia Academy to BSH this year. “They would have a good team if they didn’t recruit, Hall said. “They didn’t need to recruit. He [Shanaberger] should have worked with the people that he had. Shanaberger, who’s in his fifth year as head coach at Amelia Academy, said this year’s team is his best. “We’ve had a tradition of having foreign exchange kids come and play ball or just come to our school and fortunately for me word of mouth about my program helped bring some girls over where boys were coming from those countries, Shanaberger said when asked if Amelia Academy recruits players. “Like the girl from

Finland [Hamalainen] wanted to come play ball over here and the two girls from Serbia [Anicic and Novic] had the same idea and they wanted to try to play college ball over here,â€? Shanaberger added. “So it’s just a matter of finding a host family for them and then they come.â€? Rather than worrying about whether or not Shanaberger recruits players, Bobbitt said his primary focus is on how his team can beat the Lady Patriots. “I don’t know anything about whether he recruits or not,â€? Bobbitt said. “I know what’s on the court. That’s his girls and that’s Amelia Academy and so I recognize that they’re a really great team and they’re the best. They won the championship and if you want to beat them, then you can be the best and so that’s how I just look at it.â€? Although the Lady Knights didn’t capture the tournament championship Saturday night, Bobbitt was excited that BSH’s postseason did not come to an end. “I’m disappointed we lost tonight,â€? he said. “It would have been great to win here tonight but I’m hopeful that we’ll get another stab at another game or two and see what we can do in the state tournament.â€? No matter how the Lady Knights fare this week, Bobbitt said he is pleased with the effort they put forth all year. “It doesn’t matter what the score is, they keep fighting,â€? he said. “We just keep playing hard to the end and I’m always proud of them for that‌.â€?

Hey Eddie, I have a 2001 Ford F150 with 108,000 miles. The engine runs great when cold, but when it warms up it idles erratically and then eventually dies. If I put the transmission in drive it idles okay. I’ve had the codes checked and was told there were none present. The check engine light is not on. Sam Powhatan Sam, At the risk of repeating myself, a good auto tech with a good scan tool is hard to beat. A good scan tool, not a code puller, can read data from the car’s computer and sensors as the computer sees it. A good technician can then analyze this information provided by the scan tool. This will provide much more information than just pulling codes. If I had to make a guess at your problem, it would be a bad primary oxygen 02 sensor. There are two. It sounds like the Idle Air control Valve (IAC) is okay, but just getting a bad signal from one of the two O2 sensors. Hey Eddie, My 04 Honda overheated about a month ago and I had the radiator replaced. Now I’m getting white

smoke out of the exhaust and I’ve had to add coolant to the radiator two times. Did my engine get damaged when it overheated? Cheryl Powhatan Cheryl, I’m sorry, but it doesn’t sound good at this point. White smoke is caused by coolant or water that has made it to the combustion chamber and is now coming out of the tail pipe. This is an indication of a couple of different and expensive problems. The head gasket, cylinder head, and block all need to be checked for damage. A blown head gasket would be the best hope right now. Either way, the engine cylinder head would have to be removed to replace the gasket. At this time the cylinder head and block need to be checked for cracks and to see if there is warpage. Cheryl, I’m sorry this repair is not going to be a cheap fix.
