Jersey girl Young county artist a winner in Flying Squirrels’ contest By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If you want to know how Kailee Dalton, 10, views the world, all you need to do is look at her glasses.

The frames the Pocahontas Elementary School student wears are speckled with bright colors – a nod to Dalton’s spunk and creativity. Fortunately, Dalton doesn’t keep that creativity to herself. In fact, it was recently on full display after she was selected as a winner in the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2013 Art Contest. The contest, which invited young area artists to design a baseball jersey, drew over 140 entries. Dalton’s jersey, which featured cowsee Dalton page 3A

Powhatan supervisors got an earful about the county noise ordinance from several residents during the April 1 board meeting, specifically that the ordinance does not do enough to prevent noise from things like dog kennels and ATVs from causing a disturbance. The meeting came just weeks after a local judge, hearing a case brought by a county couple against their ATV-riding neighbors, ruled that the current ordinance is unconstitutional and, therefor, unenforceable. Powhatan resident Lisa Eget, who brought the case against her neighbors after what she described as a decade of dealing with ATV noise, told board members that she hoped they would follow the lead of several other Virginia counties and adopt a decibel-based noise ordinance. Powhatan resident Sam Epps, who helped write the current noise ordinance, told board members that he also disagreed with the judge’s ruling and that the ordinance in place simply needed “some tweaking.” Noise in Powhatan “is a serious problem,” said Epps. “And it’s getting worse.” While the board members ultimately decided to seek out more information and examine the matter further at a later date, District 2 representative Jason Moore expressed his concerns about the fact the county has a noise ordinance at all. “I have to say, I have a fundamental problem with making noise a criminal act,” said Moore, noting that there are already ways for neighbors to hash out differences over

votes for their photo (as of last week, she was ranked in the top 10 out of hundreds of entries). The caption for Smith’s photo? “People who have passion to camp out for tickets have nothing on me. Five months ‘til band camp and I’m already dreaming of the show!” The winner of the contest receives $2000 towards an instrument of their own and $10,000 for their school band program. Voting will continue until April 15.

Tilman’s Farm reportedly still in good shape Recent auctions are not a sign of luxury home site’s decline, says developer By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

Despite the auction of four lots in the Tilman’s Farm subdivision last week, the developer of the property says there is no reason for alarm. “Several of the builders, they’ve had challenges and they have had to transfer ownership back to the banks,” said Herbert Fitzgerald, a partner in Richmond-based Realty Ventures

‘Free-cycling’ event April 20 will help residents unload junk

Powhatan artist Kailee Dalton, who recently won a design contest sponsored by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on her career plans. See page 3A

Powhatan County residents are invited to celebrate Earth Day with a free recycling event. The community is asked to do their part to clean up Powhatan by bringing old and discarded tires, appliances and electronics for recycling. The Powhatan AntiLitter Council will sponsor the event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at the Powhatan Rescue Squad Grounds. Along with the recycling, residents may get rid of old documents confidentially and safely by bringing them to the event for free shredding. A 10-tire limit per resident, or household, will be enforced. Only standard car and small truck tires will be accepted. They must be off the rims and please remove any trash. No commercial business drop-offs will be allowed. Appliance items such as dishwashers, hot water heaters, stoves, air conditioners, refrigerators, washer/dryers, and freezers will be accepted. Mercury switches will also be recycled. County residency and identification may be required. Residents should be prepared to unload their own items at the drop-off site. Electronics recycling (e-cycling) will also be offered this year. Items accepted free of charge include: computer systems (hard drive, CPU, monitor), computer accessories (cables, wires, keyboards, mice, speakers), printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, VCRs and camcorders, stereos, and microwaves. Fees are charged to recycle TVs - $7 per television. This fee is charged because they require special handling due to the leaded glass and mercury contained. Payment is accepted by cash or check. Tilman’s: Some builders have struggled Continued from page 1A

ning director for Powhatan County, said the rezoning for Tilman’s Farm, which is located on a 723-acre tract in the north end of the county near the intersection of Rt. 522 and Cosby Road, was approved by the Board of Supervisors in August 2005 with an average lot size of five acres. RVG purchased the property from Edward Tilman, Fitzgerald said. “He was a longtime cattle breeder and this was a cattle farm, Fitzgerald said. The project was rezoned for 144 lots and the 30 lots in the first section have been developed and sold, Fitzgerald said. Seven homes have been built, with six occupied and one unoccupied spec house. The first five homes

that were built were marketed between $700,000 and $1 million, Fitzgerald said. “The market wasn’t there for the product that they built, he said. “Some of those houses are unfortunately not worth today what they were worth several years ago. However, more interest is being shown in purchasing higher-end houses,

Fitzgerald said, adding that three custom homes are being planned for Tilman’s Farm. “I think anybody that drives by can see that there’s nothing wrong with Tilman’s Farm, he said. “We don’t have the homes that we wanted in there, but I think if you drive by you can see that we’re in it for the long haul and excited about that.

Library offering language lessons Free program available to all – any time – through website By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

If you want to learn a foreign language, Powhatan County Public Library has a program called Rocket Languages that will help you do just that. “We’ve had it on the website for a while now,” library director Peggy Martin said during a recent interview. “It’s basically something if you have a li-

brary card you can sign up to use and it doesn’t cost anything. All you need is just to have a current Powhatan Library card and be in good standing. So basically you don’t have any overdue books or any major fines.” The list of languages that are offered includes Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Hindi, German, French, Chinese, Arabic, American Sign Language and English for Spanish speakers, Martin said. The program can be accessed any time, day or night, Martin said, by visiting www. powhatanlibrary.net and going to Online Services. “We’re trying to implement more things that people can use from home because we realize that we’re not open 24/7,” she said. “It’s actually produced from a company that we have been buying our music downloads from for a while. We purchased it because we have experience with this company that’s been providing the Freegal music downloads. “It’s not a complete language course like some of the older ones, but it’s more user-friendly. It’s interactive. It’s kind of a surface knowledge if you’re traveling. For example, if you’re going to Mexico or if you’re going to France or Germany, it’s a good way to start familiarizing

yourself with the language. It also teaches ASL – American Sign Language. And if you’re a Spanish speaker and you want to learn English, you can also learn English from this program. So there are interactive audio lessons.” Rocket Languages also can be downloaded to your personal computer, Martin said. “If you want, you can download it to your computer or you can transfer it to an MP3 Player,” she said. “So if you like to listen to tapes when you’re in your car or when you’re walking or something, it’s a good thing for you to be able to try to pick up a second language while you’re doing that as well.” Martin added that the program “was a good alternative for people who don’t want to purchase a big language course. We didn’t want to spend the money for some of the other language programs that were out there. This was a cheaper alternative to kind of try it out and see if there was any use. But mostly our feedback is that we do see from our statistics that folks are using it.” The program also includes games and cultural lessons, Martin said. “Like I said, if you’re getting ready to go to Mexico, it might be kind of fun to get on and look at it and maybe pick up some travel tips as well as the languages,” she said. If you stick with the program, it is possible to learn to speak a foreign language, Martin said. “It’s not as extensive as if you were taking four years of a language in high school or college, but it certainly gives you a surface conversational approach to learning a new language,” she said. Powhatan County Public Library is located at 2270 Mann Road in Fighting Creek Park. For more information about Rocket Languages, call (804) 598-5670.

Four Seasons’ Jimmy Vlasidis says rumors that the store was closing may have started when his father purchased some land in Flat Rock.

Four Seasons is leaving? ‘Not so,’ says manager Despite rumors, restaurant is still committed to its current location By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

Contrary to rumors, the Four Seasons Restaurant in the courthouse village area is not for sale and the owners are not considering pulling up

stakes and leaving, according to general manager Jimmy Vlasidis. “They’ve been going around for six years now, at least,” Vlasidis said of rumors surrounding the fate of the restaurant, which was established by his parents, George and Effie Vlasidis, in 2004 and is located across from the Powhatan County courthouse square at 3867 Old Buckingham Road.

The younger Vlasidis said he believes the reason for the latest rumors that the restaurant is for sale stem from his father’s purchase of a piece of property on U.S. 60 in Flat Rock. “So maybe that could have [driven] it,” Jimmy Vlasidis said. “I mean we’re thinking about putting a second Four Seasons there. That’s an option. Another option, I’ve

talked to like Papa John’s, Little Caesar’s…. Leave here? No. No we’re not leaving the village. Our clientele that we have established here, we gotta be fools in a sense to leave. We’ve already established business. We have great clientele in here. It’s a family restaurant. It’s a nice area. Everybody’s laid back. We’ve got great staff. To leave? No.” Business was brisk last Tuesday during lunchtime at the Four Seasons, which boasts a menu of some 130 items, including Italian, Greek, American, seafood and breakfast specials. Anne Reynolds, 60, who works for the Sheriff’s Office, said she would be “heartbroken” if the Four Seasons Restaurant were to leave the courthouse village. “It is the best food in Powhatan County,” she said. “I pack my lunch daily, but when I have the opportunity to meet somebody for lunch, this is the only place I go. Best food ever.” Jason Tackett, 40, who also works for the Sheriff’s Office and has been a regular Four Seasons’ customer since it opened, spoke in a similar vein. “The food’s good and just the people,” he said. “They’re good people.” He and his family eat at the Four Seasons often, Tackett said.

“I believe it would be devastating to the courthouse area limited to one restaurant,” he said. “It’s nice having two different restaurants here and the service here is always good, so I’d be sad to see them leave.” Four Seasons patrons don’t have to worry, Jimmy Vlasidis said. The restaurant isn’t going anywhere. “This restaurant right now, it’s feeding three families,” he said. “What we want to do, since we’re west in the county and we know the majority [of the population] is east, we were thinking about putting a business out there [on U.S.] 60…. In other words, we’re trying to get a little bit more income in the family because now this restaurant is supporting three families.” Vlasidis, 31, said he grew up in the restaurant business and he has worked at the Four Seasons since it opened. His family is passionate about the location they have in the courthouse village, he said. “You hate to just get up and leave the county,” he said. “Powhatan County has treated us well. It’s treated us really well. The whole county. Friendly people…. Great atmosphere. But we’re not going to leave. We will never leave Powhatan.”

Powhatan’s Mosby leads raiders to glory To mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, Powhatan Today will run a monthly article detailing what is happening during the same time period as one hundred and fifty years ago. These articles are written in real time, the better to experience the facts as readers would have during the war.

By Jason Moore Contributing Writer

M

ajor John Mosby, the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy, captures Union Br. Gen. Edwin Stoughton. This headline has topped many papers for the last few weeks as the story of Powhatan’s own John S. Mosby circulates to all points North, South, East and West. As mentioned in previous articles, Mosby was born in Powhatan, raised near Charlottesville and started a law practice in Loudon. He enlisted as a private, was raised to the officer corps, was captured and exchanged for a Union prisoner. During his return to Virginia from a POW prison, he noticed the Federal army leaving the Peninsula. With this information, Mosby walked to Lee’s HQ and informed the general of the withdrawal. Mosby also served as a scout for Jeb Stuart during his ride around McClellan’s army. In January 1863, Stuart, with Lee’s concurrence, authorized Mosby to form and take command of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, Partisan Rangers. The government certified special rules to govern the conduct of partisan rangers particularly allowing rangers to share in the spoils of war. Partisans were allowed to keep a percentage of what they captured and were paid for some items they appropriated. For example, they could receive $50.00 for a horse, $10 for a rifle and $5 for every pistol captured. Mosby’s small force has inflicted great pain on the Federals over the last three months. They attack Union pickets, cavalry scouts and supply depots. These attacks force the bluecoats to maintain more troops in the rear protecting supplies, lines of communications or to subdue occupied area. Most importantly, however, have been Mosby’s attacks on sutlers. Sutlers are private commissary agents who transport food, clothing and other goods to frontline Federal troops. They are not government officials, but receive army protection while transporting their goods. Sutlers provide luxuries to the troops, which the government canno,t which improves morale. Sutlers’ willingness to transport goods to the front

has decreased since Mosby began operations. Mosby’s primary foil the last two months has been Colonel Percy Wyndham. Wyndham is a British national who enlisted in the Union cause. He commands the Union cavalry brigade charged with policing the area just outside Washington on the Virginia side of the Potomac. Wyndham has called Mosby a horse thief and threatened to burn the town of Middleburg unless its citizen provided Wyndham with information on Mosby’s location. These actions infuriated Mosby, so he decided to raid Wyndham’s HQ and kidnap the colonel. On the nights on March 8 and 9, Lt. Mosby led a group of roughly 30 rangers on a raid to Wyndham’s HQ. Since the unit does not bivouac together, they gathered at the rendezvous point in groups of twos and threes. They met at Dover Mill near Aldie in Loudoun. The weather was horrible. A cold winter’s rain pounded the rangers and made the roads slick. The force traveled the Little River Turnpike to Chantilly when they left the roads for the fields. The travel became slower and more difficult as the rain melted the snow turning the fields into mush. Mosby’s force entered the area of Fairfax Courthouse and captured the Federal pickets designated to protect the headquarters. The pickets gave up without a fight or sound. Mosby’s men entered the Murray residence believing it was Wyndham’s HQ. Murray informed Mosby that he was wrong and that Wyndham’s HQ was Judge Thomas’s home at the other end of town. Mosby’s men burst into Thomas’s house, but did not find Wyndham who was in Washington. Instead, they located Capt. Baker of the 5th NY Cav., his former commander Col. Wardner, an Austrian Baron, and another officer. While at the HQ, Mosby learned that Br. Gen. Edwin Stoughton, commander of a Vermont cavalry brigade was staying at a Dr. Gunnell’s home on the outskirts of town. When the force arrived at Gunnell’s house, Mosby and two others knocked on the door pretending to have a dispatch for the general. A lieutenant on Stoughton’s staff yelled out the window, then walked downstairs to receive the dispatch. When Lt. Prentiss opened the door, he saw Mosby, dressed in a Confederate’s captain’s uniform, with a gun pointed at Prentiss’ chest. Mosby ordered Prentiss to take him to the general’s room. Mosby found Stoughton in bed. Mosby removed the blankets, lifted the general’s nightshirt and promptly spanked Stoughton on his bare backside. Stough-

ton awoke demanding to know who had awakened him. Mosby said: “General, did you ever hear of Mosby?” Stoughton replied: “Yes, have you caught him?” to wit Mosby said: “I am Mosby. Stuart’s cavalry has possession of the courthouse, be quick and dress.” Stoughton asked to meet General Fitzhugh Lee, brigade commander of the 4th Va. Cav. Reg., because the two men were West Point classmates. Mosby lied and said Lee was present in an effort to have Stoughton move faster. While attempting to leave the courthouse, Colonel Robert Johnstone of the 5th NY Cav. caught sight of the raiders. He thought they were federal cavalry and ordered them to halt. Mosby yelled back by whose command should his force stop, and the colonel identified himself. At that moment, Johnstone realized he was dealing with Confederate raiders and darted from his bedroom’s second story window. Mosby sent men into the house to capture the colonel, but Johnstone’s wife delayed them. A naked Johnstone ran out of the rear of the house and hide beneath the outhouse opening which leads to the latrine. No Federal patrols chased the rangers and the pickets they passed never challenged them. The only obstacle to Mosby’s escape was Cub Run. The creek was swollen from rain and melted snow.

Mosby, his men, captives and horses were forced to swim the creek at night in total darkness in freezing temperatures. On March 9, Mosby presented General Fitzhugh Lee with 30 captured enlisted men, three officers and 58 horses. Lee did not act impressed. Mosby entered Lee’s warm office dripping wet, cold and tired. Lee did not offer Mosby a chair or a chance to warm himself by the fire. Mosby wrote: “If I had been an orderly bringing him the morning report, he could not have treated me with more indifference. You would have thought from his manner that I had [not] done anything more that an ordinary matter of routine. It was plain that he was sorry for what I had done.” Mosby suppressed his anger, shook hands with the Federal officers and walked out of the office. Stuart was much impressed with Mosby’s actions. Mosby was promoted from lieutenant in the provisional army to major in the Confederate army in the course of one week. Stuart issued a special congratulatory letter which was read to every cavalry unit citing Mosby’s “boldness, skill and success” and calling the capture “unparalleled in the war.” General Robert E. Lee wrote Mosby saying Mosby had covered himself in glory that day. Jason Moore is a Powhatan County supervisor representing District 2.

After facing tragedy, parents giving back By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The facts about teen suicide – when you really take them in – can be staggering. Every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control, thousands of American teenagers take their own lives. It is the third leading cause of death among teens, making up 11 percent of lives lost. Nearly half of those suicides involved a firearm. While most of us regard these as little more than grim statistics – pointing out the need for increased awareness and early intervention programs

– there are some for whom these numbers mean much, much more. Kevin and Sherry Elwell know first-hand the devastation of losing a child to suicide: On May 18, 2009, the couple’s daughter Mariah took her own life at the family’s Powhatan home. Had she lived, Mariah would be graduating this year, and probably would have spent the summer with friends and mapping out the next stage of her young life. Instead, the Elwells are left with memories of their daughter’s too-brief life and the goal of making sure other families never have to face the over-

whelming grievous loss of a child to suicide. In honor of Mariah Elwell, her parents have organized the Out of Darkness walk at Powhatan High School on May 18, to raise funds through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In addition, the family will be offering a $1,000 scholarship for the Powhatan High School senior who raises the most money and a $500 scholarship for the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot senior who raises the most money. We here at Powhatan Today join our community in applauding the El-

wells’ tremendous efforts to promote awareness of teen suicide. To lose a child is most certainly one of life’s cruelest blows – but to take such a tragedy and use it as a tool to help others is, in just about anyone’s estimation, is nothing short of heroic. Registration for the 2013 Out of Darkness walk will begin at 10 a.m., with the walk getting underway at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 18, at Powhatan High School at 1800 Judes Ferry Road.. For more information, contact Sherry Elwell at 804-598-8478 or SElwell92@yahoo.com.

MEMORIES

Let it snow Andrew Easley Seamons, Jr. Contributing columnist

It’s a Sunday morning, and I am relaxing in my favorite recliner in our sunroom. As I sit here gazing out the windows toward my neighbor’s back yard, I glance up. What I see on top of the window molding brings memories flooding through my mind. It is a recall of yesterday, a wonderful neighborly thought that was created into a beautiful piece of art. Our neighbors at our former house have moved on… one passed away and we lost contact with the other one. But we still can enjoy snow, memories of former neighbors, memories of neighbors’ acts of kindness, and of our prior home. We moved into our new house at 2042 Buckingham Forest Court, Powhatan, Virginia, on a cold January day in 1999. About four months later, our doorbell rang. When I opened the door, there were our next-door neighbors, Shirley and Jerry Robinson. Shirley had a wrapped package in her hands. I invited them in to visit a while. They said, “Just for a few minutes, we have a small welcoming gift for you.” Shirley handed me the package that was heavier than it looked. As my wife Joanne looked on, I slowly and carefully began unwrapping the package. It was the most unbelievable gift we have ever received, a snow scene on a shaped piece of board. Not only was it a piece of wood, it was a special piece of wood. Shirley told us they would periodically visit the new house next to them while it was being built. There was a lot of scrap wood that was discarded, soon to be burned or hauled away. When they saw scrap pieces of wood that she could use, they would retrieve it. Shirley was an artist who painted on wood. She would get old chairs, rolling pins, and all kinds of household wooden items to paint. Many of her artistic wood pieces she placed on consignment and sold. The winter scene she had painted was on a scrap piece of board from our newly built house. The builder used a wide board for the top facing over our front see Memories page 9A

Lisa McNerney, right, and Krystal Solzbach of the Powhatan-based group Powhatan Women Right (POWR) stopped by to wish him a very happy birthday. The POWR group is once again serving local World War II veterans and their spouses with spring dinners and home visits. “These men and women are such a tremendous joy to have in our lives and in our families lives,” said McNerney. “They truly are The Greatest Generation.”

MY POINT OF VIEW

When it comes to the marriage debate, we should let individual states decide By Jason Moore Contributing columnist

The issue of gay marriage has been in the news because the Supreme Court heard arguments on two separate cases last week. The first case asks the question: Does California’s definition of marriage as being only between a man and a woman violate the Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment? The second case deals with whether or not the federal government’s definition of marriage as being only between a

man and a woman is constitutional under the Equal Rights Clause in the 5th Amendment. You may be wondering why we’re talking about the 5th amendment and not the 14th amendment or you may think the 5th amendment only deals with the right to remain silent. The 5th amendment deals with federal violations of equal rights and the 14th amendment deals with state violations of equal rights. This reasoning is why Brown v. Board of Education ended segregation in the states using the 14th amendment, but a later case

ended segregation in the District of Columbia using the 5th amendment. This issue of gay marriage has created much debate and evokes great emotion from both sides of the issue. The emotion surrounding the issue, however, clouds the center questions of the debate. People seem to confuse a legal definition of marriage with a religious definition of marriage. The legal and religious definitions are two different things and, when viewed in that manner, help remove see Debate page 9A

Debate: We must make clear what marriage is Continued from page 8A

some of the emotion from this argument. People should understand that you are not married by a church or minister. You are married by the state and marriage is a contract between three beings: the state and the two espoused. The state grants you certain privileges for being married (e.g. tenancy by the entirety debt protection or certain tax benefits) and you grant the state the right to divide your stuff if you get divorced. So, going before a minister and having him recite an oath is meaningless, unless the minister has been declared a marriage celebrate by the state in which the ceremony is performed. It is the signing of the marriage certificate and not the ceremony which makes a marriage valid. In effect, therefore, all “marriages” are civil unions. So, if a state decides that a legal definition of marriage is that of a man and woman, man and man and woman and woman, the religious meaning of marriage is not affected. The government could not force religions to recognize gay marriage as a religious marriage, because of the prohibitions of the First Amendment’s Freedom of Religion clause. It is like the term insanity. Insanity is a legal term used to determine whether or not a person has the mental ability to be held accountable for their actions. Insanity is not a clinical term. You will not find it in a medical

textbook. The tension between church and state over gay marriage arises over the question of whether the state can force marriage celebrants (i.e. ministers, rabbi, mullahs or priests) to perform a gay civil union since marriage celebrants are officers of the court. No religious official wants to be forced to perform a civil union which violates the tenants of their faith. There is a simple solution to this problem. Pass a law recognizing different types of marriages or marriage celebrants. Some states have different types of marriages, which place a different onus on the couple getting married to have the ceremony performed or to get a divorce. For example, a couple may agree to premarriage counseling and a longer wait time before a divorce is granted. The state also could limit a religious official’s ability to perform a marriage to those marriages which comport with their beliefs and have a different set of marriage celebrants who can perform marriages which are not recognized by a religion. The other issue at stake in this debate is the role of the federal government in our lives. Thirty states have constitutional bans on samesex marriage and roughly a dozen states have statutory bans. Eleven states passed same-sex marriage bans during the 2004 elections. In 2012, three states approved same-sex marriages, and Minnesota rejected a same-sex mar-

riage ban meaning roughly ten states currently allow same-sex marriage. I think this is great. States are the incubators of change, and we should not have solutions to cultural issues dictated from on high by the federal government. Even Justice Ruth Ginsburg said, at oral arguments last week, that Roe v. Wade stopped the natural progression of society’s acceptance of abortion, and a sweeping ruling from the court could do the same for gay marriage. Justice Kennedy said that the federal government had no place in defining marriage since this is a traditional area for the states. I agree with both. States should be able to define marriage as they see fit, based on the social and cultural norms of the states. Furthermore, if gay marriage is inevitable, then win the debate state by state. I know telling a gay or lesbian to wait is like telling Rosa Parks to sit at the back of the bus until the debate was won in Alabama, but it is the better way on this issue. April designated as child abuse prevention month Contributed report April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Southside Center for Violence Prevention is partnering with the Virginia Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, the Virginia Department of Social Services and Prevent Child Abuse Virginia to raise awareness about the role everyone can play in valuing children and strengthening their families. Thousands of Virginia children suffer abuse or neglect every year. In FY 2012, there were 52,675 children reported as possible victims of abuse and/or neglect. The Virginia Department of Social Services found that 6,365 children were maltreated, and of those, 35 children died as a result of abuse and/or neglect. The statistics can be overwhelming, but they are reminders that no one can afford to look the other way. Assisting with efforts to raise awareness this year is Child Abuse Prevention Month Honorary Chair Robert H. Dugger, Ph.D, managing partner of Hanover Investment Group, an asset consulting

company. Dr. Dugger has had a long and varied career in business and public service. “We know that abuse and neglect can rob children of their potential. All too soon, they may fall behind on this journey called life. By working together, we can change how society interacts with children during the early years, so their inherent capabilities are nurtured,” said Dr. Dugger, a board member of Smart Beginnings. “As a longtime advocate for children, I support Virginia’s efforts to prevent child abuse and educate parents and caregivers about resources and programs to strengthen their parenting skills. Parents can do better when they have support. Strong families empower our nation. Working to put children first protects our nation’s most important assets,” said Dr. Dugger. For more information on how to keep children safe from abuse and neglect, visit www.madelineshouse.org, www.dss.virginia.gov or www.pcav. org or call the Virginia Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-552-7096.

Memories: Small gift left lasting impression Continued from page 8A

porch. Before installing the board, three scallops were cut from the bottom of the board and Shirley used one of the scallop cutouts from that porch board as the wooden piece for her artistic work of art. Joanne and I decided that the ideal place for our newly acquired art was above the entrance to our sunroom. From the sunroom, we looked out over the back yard where we had an assortment of birdfeeders. On snowy days, the “Let It Snow” scene was viewed as we entered our sunroom. As we sat relaxing, reading and gaz-

ing out the windows, a similar scene was unfolding in “real-time.” Many of our visitors admired and commented on the piece of art. When we moved to our current home in December 2005, Shirley’s gift moved with us. It now graces our sunroom and provides wonderful memories of the Robinsons, our former house, and the love song “Let It Snow.” The song was written by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in 1945. It was written in July 1945 in Hollywood, California during one of the hottest days on record. It is one of

the best-selling songs of all time. Due to its seasonal lyrics, it is commonly regarded as a Christmas song. Yet despite its cheery, holiday feel, it is a love song that never mentions Christmas. Every move we make, our memories go with us. Many of those “things” we take along become ticklers of wonderful memories that can make us thankful that life can be so full of memories. Thanks for the memories. Powhatan resident Andrew Seamons Jr. recently completed his first memoir writing class.

PHS wraps up tourney on a high note Indians baseball posts 11-4 win in final game of Mingo Bay Classic By Michael Schoeffel Contributing Writer

We’ve all heard of March Madness, but what about April Madness? That would be an accurate way of summing up the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic, a high school-level tournament held annually in Myrtle Beach, South

Game to help raise funds for sidelined slugger

Carolina. This year’s edition ran from April 2 through April 6 and featured several Virginia schools, Powhatan High School included. To give you an idea of the sheer size of the tournament, consider this: since 2011, College basketball’s big dance has featured 68 schools from all parts of the United States. In comparison, this year’s MBCC boasted 60 schools from a number of mostly east coast states, with New York being perhaps the most far-flung of the group. In fact, the field was so densely pop-

ulated, that ten locations – including Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Loris, Conway, Georgetown, St. James, Socastee, Waccamaw, Carolina Forest, and Aynor - had to be used as host sites. Powhatan opened the tournament on April 2 with a 13-3 victory see Indians page 2B

At just 14, with a state record on her resumé, swimmer Casey Fanz has already proven she’s a force to be reckoned with in the water

Powhatan High School soccer player Lauren Snellings is expected to be a big contributor to the team’s success this season. The co-captain recently took a moment to answer a few questions from Powhatan Today.

My older brother played soccer when I was three, and, of course, everything my big bro did I had to do too so my parents signed me up.

What do you do to calm your nerves before a big game? I calm my nerves before the game by listening to music with Grace Fehan (co-captain). Since our freshman year it’s been a tradition and it always gets us pumped up and ready to play.

Family facing mounting medical bills after young son suffers brain injury Powhatan’s Nathan Martin is a talented young baseball player, but these days the 7year-old has been forced to watch his team, the Powhatan Red Sox, from the bench. Revels was recently involved in an accident at his home and has been diagnosed with post concussion syndrome, which means that now, instead Martin of shagging fly balls and practicing his swing with his friends, Nathan must endure trip after trip to Richmond’s Children’s Hospital for treatment. He suffers from seizures, and faces at least a year of recovery before he can begin to resume a normal life. Now, Nathan’s family and friends are coming together to show their support and to try and help his family with their considerable medical expenses. This Sunday, the Powhatan Red Sox will play a benefit game in Nathan’s honor. The game will start at 10 a.m. at

What was the best advice you have been given by a coach in your soccer career and who was it from?

Casey Fanz recently broke a state free style record that was in place since 1985.

Fanz-tastic By Michael Schoeffel Contributing Writer

For all intents and purposes, 14-year-old Casey Fanz looks and acts like your average teenager. She lists eating as one of her favorite hobbies, and mac and cheese as one of her favorite meals. But put her in

the water and you’ll quickly find that she is anything but average. She is, as it were, a sort of amphibian. Fanz began swimming for Poseidon – one of the most well-respected competitive swim programs in Virginia – two years ago, at age 12. She had been competing in the YMCA sum-

mer league when Rebecca Murray, the Aquatics Director, saw enough talent in Fanz to urge her to join up with Poseidon, which offered a more intense competition experience. Since heeding Murray’s advice to join up with Poseidon, Fanz has broken records left and right. She was also introduced to Ted Sallade, the head coach of Poseidon and Fanz’s selfproclaimed role model. see Fanz page 2B

Powhatan lacrosse takes down Warriors, 9-5 Contributed report Powhatan Lacrosse took another step on Friday March 29th when not only did they play their first home game but they won their first game. In front of about a hundred Powhatan fans, friends and family, at the Powhatan Junior High School your Powhatan Lacrosse Indians played as Indians tend to do – with hustle, heart and desire and beat the visiting Warriors

Lacrosse Club 9 – 5. It was an exciting game and a great venue to be able to play under the lights at the Junior High Football Stadium. With music jamming through the speakers and the student section adding their support Powhatan scored the first goal when Ky Snyder score on an great assist from Vincent Evens. Snyder lead all scorers with 5 goals and Evans lead the

team in points with 6. Bolstered behind inspired play behind goalie James Kottmann, who had 8 saves on 13 shots, the entire team played great team defense and played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and never lost the lead. Mid-Fielder Eric Seal lead the team in groundballs with 9 and Defenseman see Lacrosse page 2B

The best advice I’ve ever been given by a coach was given to me by Julie Poston when I was little and just starting out in soccer. I was discouraged and she told me not to worry about the score of the game. She said at the end of the day you play for the love of the game and if you played with heart then, regardless of the score, you’ve won.

What are some goals you have set for yourself this coming season? My goal this season is to be a good captain for my team and to help lead them to victories.

What advice would you give young players starting out? One piece of advice for new soccer players is to stick with it. I know the running can get a little old but soccer is a great sport and it will easily become your passion, plus you’ll always have a team full of sisters standing behind you. Practice hard!

Sallade is a four-time Virginia Swimming Coach of the Year recipient, and has coached numerous athletes who have gone on to compete in the Junior Nationals (Fanz would fall into this category), USA Senior Nationals and USA Olympic trails over his thirty years of experience around the pool. Fanz has taken the advice passed down from Sallade to heart. Back in March, at the Virginia Swimming Short Course Age Group Championships in Christiansburg, she broke a long-standing record in the 13-14 age group 50 Freestyle by posting a time of 23.77 - more than a tenth of a second faster than the previous mark of 23.90, which – get this – was set all the way back in 1985. She also holds the team record in the Open 50 Freestyle, which she set on March 12 with a faster time (23.73) than the one posted at the SC Age Group Championships. It comes as no surprise, then, when she names her favorite event. “Fifty Freestyle, by far, says Fanz, with a hint of excitement in her voice. “It’s short, fast,

ships. As it stands now, Fanz has dedication to her passion has led her to become the 31st ranked swimmer in the nation in the 18-and-under age group. When she’s not spending time splashing around the pool, Fanz enjoys throwing together homemade concoctions in the kitchen, the most notable of which is a classic teenage favorite. “I make homemade mac and cheese! she says. She’s also given some of her time back to the community, volunteering at the Bon Secours Daycare center. She plans on continuing her passion at the collegiate level, although the day in which she begins applying to schools is still quite a ways off. Right now, she’s still very much a kid, but when the time comes to make the jump to the next level, there seems to be little doubt that there will be plenty of schools out there that would be more than happy to have her in the water. Or who knows, maybe she’ll become the next swimmer under the tutelage of her idol, Coach Sallade, to reach the US Olympic Trials.

and really fun. I’m a sprinter, I like short races. Her penchant for sprinting was on display in the team portion of the SC Age Group Championships as well. In addition to her individual accomplishments, Fanz and her teammates set new high marks in 200 Freestyle Relay, which was previously set in 2005, and the 400 Freestyle Relay, which was set in 2002. Both marks are now LSC (Local Swim Committee) records, as well. Perhaps the most notable accomplishment of her young-but-everblossoming swimming career, however, was competing in the 2013 NCSA Junior Nationals, a competition geared for girls aged 18-and-under. At 14 years old, Franz was easily of the youngest swimmers to enter the field, but she held her own against a group of swimmers that, on the whole, had much more experience. Her most recent accomplishment came last week at the NASA Showcase Classic in Clearwater, FL, where she swam a 23.44 in the 50 Freestyle, a time that was both a state and personal best. She and her teammates also bested the 200 Relay time they set in the SC Age Group Champion-

over the McClancy Crusaders (Queens, NY). They were powered by Carter Biringer, who was a perfect 4 for 4 with four runs scored, and Luke Scherzer, who went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Scherzer also put in five solid innings of work on the mound, striking out nine and earning a win. The Crusaders, who scored all three of their runs in the top of the third, managed only two hits on the day while committing five errors. The Indians followed their ten-run victory on the opening day of the tournament with another doubledigit win, downing the Hurricane Redskins (Hurricane, WV) 100. Biringer stayed hot at the dish, going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Power-hitting lefty Zack Bartlett went 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBI. Starting pitcher Jamie Schaller allowed only five hits in what was his first complete game of the season. They ran into a

buzzsaw in their third game, however, falling 15-7 to a tough Washington Patriots (Charles Town, WV) squad. The Patriots’ bats were in full swing, as they pounded out 16 hits and forced the Indians to use far more pitchers (six, to be exact) than would have been ideal. Scherzer was 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Indians. The Indians ended the tournament on the upswing, dispatching the Penfield Patriots (Penfield, NY) by a 11-4 margin. Biringer’s bat once again ruled the day, as he went 3 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI. Tyler Allen was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI Due to heavy rain that cancelled all of Thursday’s contests, tournament organizers opted to forego Saturday’s championship round. So while an NCAA tournament champion was crowned on Monday, the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic ended without a winner.

Coming off an 8-5 2012 season, Powhatan High School boys tennis coach John DiNardi has nothing but positive things to say about the players he’s putting on the court this season. That said, the coach has also learned to set realistic goals. “Our objective this year is to finish second or third in the district,” said DiNardi, noting that, with a solid mix of returning players and newcomers, they should be able to hit that mark (last year the team finished fourth.) DiNardi expects Evan Pfab to serve as his number one player this season, followed by Nick Furbee, Joseph Barden, Brad Chauncey and Trey Barden. Also returning this season and expected to contribute at a high level are Cameron Rhoney, Tucker Van Cannon and Jack Gireaux. DiNardi said he’ll be expecting big things from his returning players, but noted that even those who are less experienced often end up making solid contributions. “So many of the players we get have never really picked up a racquet before they got to high school,” said DiNardi, “and they end up loving the game, maybe even more

than kids who have been playing all their lives.” DiNardi spent last Thursday afternoon as he has spent so many similar early J. Barden spring afternoons since signing on as the team’s head coach seven years ago, walking his players through drills, offering tips on form and grip T. Barden and overseeing hitting sessions. One thing that might be a little different than in previous years? The way the players view themselves. Chauncey “In the past, maybe we were guilty of thinking we were a little better than we were,” said DiNardi, noting that playing in the Southside District – not known for its tennis programs – didn’t do much to prepare them for the better teams they would face at the regional level. Playing in the Jefferson District has meant a higher level of play– and a bit more humility, “We’re a little more modest now,” said DiNardi. “We are going in with a better attitude. Instead of expecting to win, we’re willing to work hard to win.”
