Melissa Nelson is at home in the classroom and others have taken notice of the work she is doing there with her students. A 10th-grade English teacher at Powhatan High School, Nelson was recently honored as the school’s Teacher of the Year and also was named the teacher of the year for the entire school division. “I’m excited,” said PHS principal Kris Gwaltney. “I’m excited for Powhatan High School and I’m excited for Melissa Nelson because she’s definitely representative of what a master teacher is. She’s creative. She’s student-centered and she’s very, very bright, but able to connect information in a way for kids that kids understand and engage with it.” Nelson, 35, is completing her 11th year as an English teacher at PHS. ‘Chief Powhatan’ will soon head to new home in Powhatan’s state park The sculpture created by Powhatan resident Mark Staples in honor of Chief Powhatan will be moving to its new home at the soon-to-be opened Powhatan State Park on the Historic James. Staples, who said he did not originally plan to have the 800-pound steel figure located in the park, is nevertheless pleased at the opportunity to Staples place it there. “I am personally thrilled at the opportunity to leave this as a legacy to the area,” said Staples. “I like the fact that this will make a small educational contribution for the benefit of the public.” According to Staples, the park service will eventually install a permanent informational marker that details the life of Chief Powhatan and the history of the Algonquian tribes. Staples expected to pur the concrete pad that the sculpture will rest on last weekend and said that the piece itself would likely be moved within the next two weeks.

Facing devastating diagnosis, county family relies on prayer ‘That’s the only thing that keeps us going,’ says mother of teen By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

Although her body is weak and her bones are frail, Rebecca Maupin’s brown eyes reveal the spirit and determination of a fighter. For nearly three years, the 14year-old has been battling leukemia after being diagnosed with the disease on July 8, 2010. Since then, she’s undergone two bone marrow transplants and been near death’s door only to rally back. Resting on the couch of the Powhatan County home she shares with her parents, Michael and Dawn Maupin, both 42, and her sisters, Heather, 19, and Skyler, 6, Rebecca shakes her head up and down when asked if she considers herself a strong fighter. While the cancer has taken a toll on her 5-foot, 1-inch body – she’s gone from 110 pounds to 66 pounds – Rebecca doesn’t feel sorry for herself. “I just kind of pray and stuff,” she said. Rebecca said she hopes to get well enough to resume one of her favorite activities – riding her bicycle. She still enjoys going outside, she said. “Usually just the fresh air and stuff like that,” she said. During her illness, the community has rallied around Rebecca and her family, helping with finances and things like giving Rebecca’s bedroom a makeover. Rebecca and her family are grateful for their kindness. “I thank ‘em a lot,” she said. For the previous two school years, Rebecca was homeschooled by Shelia Baker, a

teacher at Pocahontas Middle School. With Baker’s help, Rebecca completed the 7th grade last year, earning a 4.0 grade point average, Mrs. Maupin said. With visits to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Rebecca was unable to be homeschooled this year, her mother said. When Rebecca had trouble getting her medicine this spring because of complications with the family’s insurance, they contacted Dr. Hiroto Inaba, who they had met before at St. Jude. Following a blood test, Inaba determined that Rebecca’s medicine was not as effective as it had been and after examining her, he recommended a new medication – Sunitinib. Since she’s been on Sunitinib, Rebecca’s leukemia cell count has dropped from 71 percent to 24 percent, Mrs. Maupin said. “Now we have hopes of possibly reaching remission again,” Mrs. Maupin said. “She’s down to 24 percent and we’ve got a lot more to go. That 24 percent can be very, very stubborn.”

One thing in his daughter’s favor, Maupin said, is that Rebecca is on the lowest dose of Sunitinib possible, so there’s room to up the dosage. The family gets the medicine from St. Jude and it’s what’s keeping Rebecca alive, Mrs. Maupin said, adding that Rebecca has acute myeloid leukemia, which is cancer of the blood in bone marrow. “Without it, her leukemia would progress,” Mrs. Maupin said. “Typically if AML goes untreated, it can be fatal within six to eight weeks because that’s the aggressive type of leukemia that she has.” It’s their strong faith that has gotten them through this struggle, Maupin said. “Yeah, that’s the only thing that keeps us going,” he said. “That’s it, faith. You have to hope.” Rebecca has faith and hope, her mother said. “’What are you gonna do?’” Mrs. Maupin said Rebecca will say. “’You gonna curl up in a ball and cry and die or you gonna stand up and fight?’ And that’s the choices and she stands up and fights every day going on three years and I’m so proud of her.”

Crazy Quilters donate to county Sheriff’s Office By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Powhatan’s Crazy Quilters Club came up with a novel idea to aid local law enforcement recently: on May 13, the group donated 23 hand-made quilts to the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office for officers to keep in their work vehicles. The idea, said Ann Brackett, an original member of the 18-year-old club, is

for the quilts to bring a measure of comfort to people dealing with a traumatic event. Powhatan undersheriff Chris Dehart, who accepted the quilts on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, said he appreciates the donation and thinks the quilts will be an asset to both deputies and residents. “It really helps the officer to offer some security to people when they’ve been through an accident

or a house fire,” said Powhatan undersheriff Chris Dehart. “We will definitely put them to good use.” The Crazy Quilters Club currently meets at 9 a.m. on the second Monday of each month in the Powhatan Fire and Emergency Services building (3864-B Old Buckingham Road). CATCHING UP: Dr. Kristian Hargadon

Hargadon awarded research fellowship 1997 Huguenot Academy graduate will use Mednick Memorial award to study melanoma tumor cells

Powhatan native Dr. Kristian Hargadon was awarded the Mednick Fellowship once before, in 2011. He will use this year’s award to continue his research at HampdenSydney College.

By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

Powhatan native Dr. Kristian M. Hargadon is no stranger to success and his latest achievement is being awarded a Mednick Fellowship to continue his cancer research at Hampden-Sydney College. “The Maurice L. Mednick Memorial was created in 1967 in honor of a young Norfolk industrialist who died from accidental causes and whose family and business associates wished to perpetuate his name by establishing a memorial that would emphasize his and the donors’ strong interest in higher education,” Hargadon said during a recent interview. The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges administers the Mednick Memorial Fund and each year awards a $2,000 grant to a teacher or professor at each member institution to help to enhance the academic development of the recipient. “I have been Hampden-Sydney’s recipient in 2011 and now in 2013,” Hargadon said. “The criteria on which it is awarded are the history of past scholarly activity and the promise of the research proposed in the grant application.” The grant money will be used for research he will conduct at H-SC this summer, Hargadon said. “I will be studying how melanoma tumor cells influence the maturation and activation of dendritic cells, a cell type of the immune system that is instrumental in inducing anti-tumor immune responses,” he said. “The dendritic cells will be isolated from the spleens of mice and the money will be used to purchase mice and other supplies for the research project.” A 1997 graduate of Huguenot Academy, Hargadon said he particularly enjoyed studying biology in high school and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in the subject at H-SC in 2001. He continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded a doctorate in Microbiology in 2007. Hargadon lives in Farmville, about a mile off the

H-SC campus. “I’m an Elliott Assistant Professor of Biology and teach Immunology, Virology, Microbiology, Biology of Cancer, Genetics and Principles of Biology lecture and laboratory courses,” he said. “I am just finishing my fourth year. It is really special to be back at my alma mater and working alongside many colleagues who were once my mentors and who had such an influence on my academic path.” In addition to being a scholar in high school and college, Hargadon also was a standout basketball player at Huguenot Academy earning All-State honors his junior and senior year and at H-SC, where he was a member of Tigers basketball team that advanced to the Division III national title game his sophomore year, losing by one point in double overtime. At 34, his attention is focused primarily on cancer research. “My interest in cancer research goes way back,” he said. “My grandmother passed away from cancer when I was 5 and I can remember thinking shortly after that how great it would be to find a cure for

cancer. That thought stuck with me throughout high school when I really became interested in biology. During the course of my biology major at HampdenSydney, I took a course in Immunology my sophomore year and after studying tumor immunity, I was hooked. I was so fascinated by the idea that our own immune systems have the potential to fight cancer and so trying to understand ways to improve the immune response to cancer immediately became my passion.” His parents – Mike and Pat Hargadon – continue to live in Powhatan and Hargadon said he tries to “come home” about twice a month. “I definitely loved growing up in a rural environment,” he said. “I think it gave me the opportunity to develop as an individual, scholar, leader, athlete, etc. Whereas I imagine it is sometimes easy to get lost in the shuffle of a big city, I had the opportunity to become involved in many facets of school and community life and this helped me to find my interests and develop the skills that I use to this very day as a teacher, researcher, mentor and person.”

New state park to host Volunteer Day June 1

“This is a dream come true for Powhatan residents and for that matter all Virginians who really have very limited public access to the James River and are desperate for places to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends.” Powhatan state park supporter Bobby Wilcox

James River west of Richmond was originally conceived in the 1970s but in 2001 the state started looking at this location in Powhatan county as the right place to build a new park that would provide recreational access to the James River for canoeing, kayaking and fishing and provide opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, birding and wildlife observation, picnicking, camping and all the outdoor activities

report from state park leaders about the grand opening plans. The general public is invited to the Volunteer Day and encouraged to RSVP on line to bobby. wilcox@dcr.virginia.gov so they can plan the days work and lunch program to accommodate everyone who wants to participate. State parks director Joe Elton, who has lived in Powhatan for about 20 years, credits Senator John Watkins and Delegate Lee Ware with working budget amendments through the General Assembly that made the park’s development possible, including providing the staffing and operational funding to open the new park. He also credits the Board of Supervisors and county administration with helping set the stage for the construction of the new state park. There has been tremendous community support since the effort to build the new state park first came to light in 2001 and the county and state have worked effectively to address issues critical to the success of the park. “Perhaps the biggest challenge we faced after acquiring the land and planning the park was the needed improvements to the intersection of state route 522 and route 617 (Old River Trail). By working together, the county, the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Virginia Department of Transportation studied the needed improvements at the intersection and the legislature adopted a budget amendment to fund the needed improvements,” Elton stated.

Contributed report The Friends of Powhatan State Park are hosting a Volunteer Day at Virginia’s newest state park from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m on June 1, to help state park staff prepare for the park’s grand opening which is expected to be in early July. A state park on the

Some of the people who are part of our effort actually signed up back in 2005 and have been waiting patiently for this opportunity,” Aungier stated. We will be helping to groom the park, work on some trails and have a short program during a complimentary hot dog lunch to brief volunteers on the goals of the Friends of Powhatan State Park and to hear a

Secondary Education, with a concentration in English, speech and journalism. She also has a master’s degree from Longwood University as a reading specialist. After teaching for two years in Ohio, Nelson said she decided to head south. “I just needed to get

out of Ohio,” she said. “I was young and just wanted something different and I found Powhatan online.” So far, it’s been a good fit and a rewarding venture, Nelson said. “I can walk down the hallway and get 20 ‘Hellos, how are you?’ and that’s nice,” she said. “Working with people is probably the most re-

warding.” Nelson received the district teacher of the year award at a recent School Board meeting and it came as a surprise, she said. “I didn’t think I would get it,” she said. “I really don’t think I’ve done anything above and beyond. I really don’t. It’s very humbling. It’s very gratifying and I’m not

trying to poop on it on any way. I’ve done my job. I think I’m blessed that I am where I’m supposed to be – in the classroom. I’m just well-suited.” Nelson teaches regular and honors English and also is the adviser for the PHS yearbook – Big Chief. see Teacher page 7A

Teacher: ‘I think I’m fair.’ Continued from page 6A

Since she’s been at PHS, Nelson’s gotten married and she and her husband Scott have a 4year-old daughter, Laura. Being a veteran teacher and a parent has helped her gain more insight into her profession, Nelson said. “I think being able to see things from just different standpoints than before,” she said. “Life is just experiences and the more you accumulate the richer your database to draw from. I think I’m fair. I’m not harsh and I wouldn’t say I’m easy.” While she appreciates the paper weight she got from the School Board for being named district teacher of the year, as well as a plaque, there is another perk, Nelson said. “I get a parking space by the front door for next year,” she said.

Nelson said she has the privilege of working with colleagues who are passionate about what they do. “There’s a lot of amazing teachers in this building,” she said. She would gladly trade her award in exchange for helping more students realize their potential, Nelson said. “Absolutely,” she said. “That’s the point of being here is helping out.” When the 2013-2014 school year begins, don’t look for much to change about Nelson other than having a shorter walk to school. “I’ll be glad to be out of the limelight,” she said. “I’ll just keep plugging away. That’s what you do. It’ll be a new group of kids and you treat them as best you can…The world is not tilting.”

Meaning of Memorial Day should be respected By Roslyn Ryan Editor

There’s no doubt about it: The way we celebrate holidays in this day and age – from Christmas to President’s Day – tend to have progressively less to do each year with the original reason the occasion was first celebrated. It’s not really anyone’s fault, per se. As cultural mores shift and new generations take over, it’s understandable that President’s Day is no longer just for George Washington (many states since the 1980s have let Lincoln or Jefferson in on the act as well) or that Mother’s Day eventually became so commercialized that the founder of the observance actually denounced it publicly – along with all the cards and candy it helped sell. Things change, and that’s the way it is. No sense getting upset. The one exception to this rule, however, should be Memorial Day. Call me a prude – I’ve been called worse – but I have to admit it tweaks a nerve that Memorial Day isn’t always treated with the solemnity it deserves. I don’t like the fact that the first thing that comes to mind when many people think of Memorial Day is “threeday weekend.” And it just bugs the heck out of me when tourism websites point out how awesome Memorial Day is for hitting the beach (it is, as these sites point out ad nauseam, the official start of summer.) I have to believe I’m not the only one out there who thinks this. Memorial Day, after all, is a day set aside for honoring those who died defending our freedom – to men and women who gave up home and family and life in service to their country. Keep the Christ in Christmas? Yes. But maintaining Memorial Day as a true memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice is perhaps just as important. *** As we close in on the end of this school year, Powhatan Today would like to take a moment to congratulate all of the Powhatan teachers honored as Teachers of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year (see story, page 1A). As you can see by the answers they gave to our interview questions, these teachers display a passion for their work that has surely had a tremendously positive and lasting impact on the hundreds of students who have come through their classrooms. We salute them for all of the hard work they put in day after day, and congratulate them on this well-deserved honor.

L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R May is month to consider work done by our local Community Action Agency Dear Editor, National Community Action Month in May is a public awareness campaign created by the national office of the Community Action Partnership to highlight Community Action Agencies’ role helping low-income families move out of poverty and achieve economic security. Each year, Community Action Agencies serve 20 million people in rural, suburban, and urban communities across the country through a variety of targeted programs, such as Head Start, Weatherization, job training and placement, financial education, housing, energy assistance, and transportation. During National Community Action Month, Community Action Agencies truly make the Promise of Community Action – to help people and change lives – come alive by hosting events that help put a “face” on the families and individuals living in poverty and the dedicated Community Action staff and volunteers who are helping them escape it and achieve economic security. Success stories are honored and personal achievements are recognized. Some governors, mayors, and other elected officials even proclaim May “Community Action Month” in their states, cities and counties. Community Action Agencies also use National Community Action Month to call attention to poverty-related problems. As Community Action Agencies are showcasing their programs, they are also giving local residents –many who are unaware of the poverty in their communities – a first-hand look at the struggles low-income families face and how Community Action programs help them. The Powhatan Community Action Agency provides Emergency Assistance to those who meet the federal poverty guidelines and other program criteria. Since the 2012 program year began, our agency has assisted 207 families with emergency needs such as; utility assistance, mortgage assistance, school supplies, and other services collaborated with the Ruby Leonard Food Pantry and the Coalition of Powhatan Churches. These services are available through the Powhatan Department of Social Services at 804-598-5630, community Services Coordinator, R Vaughan. They have the food and they have the building, but New Hope Fellowship food pantry organizer Jennifer Davis says she and her team are still missing one key element: families to help. It’s not that they don’t have anyone taking advantage of the food pantry – Davis says they currently serve around 20 families – but Davis says hopes to reach out to and serve many more

Davis says understands why some people might not think they qualify to use a food pantry, or perhaps that some feel strange about visiting one. “Everybody falls on hard times,” said Davis, “but sometimes it’s hard for people to take help.”

Indians turned season around

PHS wraps up regular season 17-1 By Michael Schoeffel Sports Writer

The Powhatan High School softball team has been typically dominant so far in 2013, finishing with a 17-1 regular season record and beating Louisa in one-game playoff to guarantee a birth in the Region II tournament. “We lost to Louisa twice last season, and the first time we played them this season,” said Crump. “After that first loss, we knew we needed to reverse that trend. So to come back and beat them twice in a row [once on May 10, then again on May 16] really gives us a lot of confidence.” Being the number one seed, the girls received a bye in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament. They played a semifinal game last night against the winner of the Monticello/Western Albemarle quarterfinal game. Unfortu-

By Michael Schoeffel Sports Writer

If you think of the 2013 Powhatan High School Indians’ baseball season as a twoact play, more than a few people may have shuffled anxiously out of their seats at the conclusion of the first act. But those optimists who stuck around for the second act were handsomely rewarded for their dedication. The Indians suffered five losses in their first nine games and found themselves in a predicament that few Powhatan teams have had to endure in recent years - they were only one game above .500, and winless in all three of their district contests. But the Indians unleashed some that pent up, untapped potential in the second half of the season, going on a furious run that can only be described as the baseball equivalent of a pack of wild steer trampling a clover field. Their only loss over their final eight games came to Monticello, and in their seven wins they outscored their opponents by a score of 81-17. Powhatan’s inspired play improved their district record from 0-3 to 6-4 and gives them immense confidence heading into the Jefferson District Tournament - which, by the way, got underway this past Monday, too late to be featured in this week’s publication. The district final is scheduled to be played tomorrow evening in Louisa.

Junior High track teams are tops in Southside By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Powhatan Junior High School boys and girls track teams had plenty to smile about after the final event of the 2013 Conference Track Meet at Nottoway High School on April 27. After all was said and done, the boys team captured first place with a total of 114 points while the girls earned the top

Staff Writer

This was the girls 9th Southside Middle School Championship in the last 10 years and the boys first championship since 2006. There were a total of 8 teams. In addition to the tremendous performances turned in by his athletes, Wasosky said he was pleased to be part of a coaching staff that includes assistant coaches Libby Acampora and Chris Leech. “Libby and Chris were a lot of fun to work with this year. spot with 88 points. To head track coach Bill Wasosky, the wins were a testament to the hard work and dedication both teams have displayed this season. “This was the strongest and deepest boy’s team we have ever had,” said Wasosky. “They worked exceptionally hard and were their own best competition in practice.” As for the girls, Wasosky pointed out that the high standard set by previous athletes has been a great motivator. “The tradition of winning really keeps the girls pushing hard every year. They never cease to amaze the coaches each year.”

By Michael Schoeffel The Powhatan High School girls soccer team ended their season last Thursday evening with a 8-0 loss to Charlottesville in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament. Although the girls finished with 1-14 record, head coach Pam Spotts emphasized that this was a very green team with a lot of untested players in key positions. “I thought they were a really neat group of girls to work with,” said Spotts. “We were very young and inexperienced, but there was never any dissension. This is a very tough district to be young in, but I’m proud of the girls for always playing hard.” Spotts will return nine starters in 2014. Two of the girls from this year’s team – Grace Fehan and Leslie Harrison – will be moving on to compete collegiately next spring. Fehan will be attending Barton College, a Division II

Hospital, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the National Amputee Golf Association and the Stand Up and Play Foundation, is helping people with a myriad of physical disabilities enjoy the therapeutic benefits of a summer day out on the links. “It’s a really outstanding program, Doug Chaffins, a Powhatan resident and volunteer, said. “To see folks come out and enjoy physical activity again is really something special. The bulk of the program consists of a series of Adaptive Golf Clinics hosted by Windy Hill Sports Complex. They are available to individuals with all types of physical disabilities, including, but not limited to, brain trauma, amputees, stroke victims, paraplegics and quadriplegics. The inaugural clinic

took place on April 26, with subsequent dates on May 13, June 10, July 8, Aug. 25 and Sept. 9. According to Chaffins, each clinic operates like an interactive seminar in which volunteers and accomplished instructors (like Janet Phillips, who has earned LPGA Class A status) teach disabled individuals how to use adaptive equipment, such as the ParaGolfer, to complete basic golfing activities, like driving, putting and chipping. In addition to the clinics, Brandermill Country Club also is offering Onthe-Course play on June 25 and Aug. 27. As the name suggests, On-theCourse events allow the disabled players to put the skills they absorbed at the clinic into practice by competing in a full round of golf. “People often think that if they have a physical disability that they have to stop doing all

those things that they love, Alison Clarke, the Community Recreation Services director at Sheltering Arms, said. “Our goal is to introduce folks to the activity and show that they can get back to the game of golf with some adaptive techniques. Perhaps the most impressive piece of adaptive technology is the vaunted ParaGolfer. Provided by the Stand Up and Play Foundation, the ParaGolfer is a stateof-the-art mobility device that is equal parts golf cart, wheelchair and leg stabilizer. A laudable feat of ingenuity and practicality, it allows mobility impaired individuals to stand eye-to-eye with their peers and accomplish physical tasks that may, at one time, have seemed impossible. The ParaGolfer is an all-terrain vehicle so – no matter where the ball ends up: in the rough, the woods or even a pesky sand trap – the versatile apparatus can get there. Even locations that are off-limits to traditional golf cars, such as the pristine grass that covers the green, are free game for a roving ParaGolfer. It was co-developed by Anthony Netto, who also founded the Stand Up and Play Foundation. Netto, an avid golfer, was injured in a gruesome auto accident back in 1994 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Such an unspeakable tragedy could have bred contempt in Netto’s heart, but instead it inspired him to design a vehicle that would help disabled individuals become active again. “It’s a wonderful piece of equipment, Chaffins said. “In fact, after Lyn [Barrett] hit a shot the other day, she

It’s such a great feeling being able to hit golf balls!’ While there’s no doubt that the ParaGolfer is an invaluable tool, it should be made clear that all physically disabled individuals are encouraged to register for the program, not only those who would need to use the ParaGolfer. There also is an endof-summer golf tournament in the works, but no official date has been set. “This has been a successful program and everyone who has come participated has had a great time, Chaffins added. “If you or someone you know is debating whether or not to come out, don’t think twice. If you are disabled and would like to sign up for a clinic, call Sheltering Arms a call at 804-764-5275. The Powhatan boys soccer team ended their season last Thursday evening with a 3-2 loss to Monticello in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament. Their final record stood at 2-10-2, with their two wins coming against AAA L.C. Bird and Jefferson

District foe Louisa. Head coach Jeff Poston returns a solid nucleus in 2014, as he will lose only four seniors to graduation. This past February, senior Ivan Canas signed on as a reserve with the Chesterfield Canas United’s UFC (United Football Club), a semi-pro squad that competes in the NPSL (National Premier Soccer League).
