A home invasion. A brutal attack by a stranger. A woman left for dead on the side of the road. It is the stuff of nightmares, but it became devastatingly real for Powhatan resident Mary Anderson on the night of Jan. 25, 2012, when she was assaulted and then abducted by James Lee Wolfe. Now, with Wolfe awaiting sentencing, Anderson describes her ordeal and how she has found the strength to keep going.

or some people, taking life one day at a time is just a saying, but for Powhatan County resident Mary Lee Anderson, it’s what keeps her going. On the evening of Jan. 25 of last year, the 58-year-old native of Northwest Pennsylvania was in her pajamas watching television at her former home on Academy Road. It was a school night and Anderson, who teaches special education, was supposed
to report to Powhatan High School the next day. She never made it. Instead, she found herself in Johnston-Willis Hospital being treated for a skull fracture, brain bleed, broken right arm, fractured left eye socket and multiple cuts on her body. The injuries were the result of an attack by James Lee Wolfe, who broke into her home the night before with his face covered and hit her several times with a meat cleaver before setting her house on fire, kidnapping her and forcing her to withdraw money from an ATM machine see Anderson page 5A
James Lee Wolfe faces 20 years to life in prison each on breaking and entering and aggravated malicious wounding charges, five years to life each on the robbery and arson charges, and one to 10 years in prison on an abduction charge.
Like scores of parents and physicians, Powhatan resident Anne Louise Maliff is on a mission to help make a freestanding children’s hospital in the greater Richmond area a reality. A native of Powhatan County who attended Huguenot Academy and earned a college degree from the University of Virginia in 1989, the 46-year-old Maliff lives Maliff with her husband John and their two sons, 14-year-old Mitch and 9-year-old Nate. “Nate was born with a developmental brain abnormality,” Maliff said of her youngest son see Hospital page 7A

Jim Blandford, left, found Tim Kahn’s high school class ring when he was coaching a baseball game at Powhatan’s War Memorial Building 20 years ago. He recently returned the ring to Kahn.
Ring lost on baseball diamond 20 years ago reunited with owner By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer
It took a while, but Powhatan County resident Jim Blandford was able to finally give a high school ring he found about 20 years ago to the man who lost it. Blandford, 63, is the president and principal broker of Fine Creek Realty in Powhatan. About 20 years ago when he was coach-
ing his son Jake in baseball with the Powhatan Youth Athletic Association, Blandford said he found a ring near a batting cage close to a baseball field at the War Memorial Building on Skaggs Road. It was a 1993 class ring from Richmond Christian School, Blandford said, adding that he could only read the first name on the ring, which was “Tim.” He made an effort to find the
person who the ring belonged to, Blandford said, but came up empty with no leads. He put the ring in a trinket box that was on top of his dresser, Blandford said. “I said I’m going to find the guy one of these days,” Blandford said. Fast forward to about two months ago and Blandford said see Ring page 3A

he had a chance meeting with insurance salesman Kevin Wingfield, who stopped by his office. Over the following weeks, Blandford said he got to know Wingfield a little better and learned that Wingfield graduated from Richmond Christian in 1991. Blandford said he told Wingfield about the ring.
“I mean it’s just neat. You get something back after it’s been gone so long and now I’ve got four children and hopefully it’ll mean something to them.” Tim Kahn, whose high school ring was returned after being lost for 20 years. “As soon as I told him the first name, he knew who it was,” Blandford said. He was able to connect with Kahn on Facebook and set up a meeting at his real estate office to return the ring, Blandford said. “So it was just cool,”
Kahn said. “I don’t know what else to really say. I mean it’s just neat. You get something back after it’s been gone so long and now I’ve got four children and hopefully it’ll mean something to them.” His mother paid about $200 for the ring, Kahn said. “The joke was that I was going to have to pay her back for it,” Kahn said. “So anyways when I got it back I said wow, it looks like I don’t have to pay her back, but that’s been 20 years so.” The blue-stoned ring is likely to be passed on to his youngest child, 3year-old Andrew, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, Kahn said. “I’m probably going to wind up giving it to him one day and [it would] just be kind of cool to have it in the family,” Kahn said. “Jim, what a nice fellow and for him to do that was pretty awesome. He didn’t have to.” While happy he was able to return the ring, Blandford said he just did the right thing. “It was what I was supposed to do anyway,” Blandford said. “I saved him 20 years of holding on to the ring, so I did right.” borcutt@powhatantoday.com (804) 5984305

have well-developed root systems and can resprout new tops.” The good news for most Virginians, particularly those who were not feeling very welcoming of these critters, is that this won’t happen again for another 17 years. “I say most Virginians, but not all, because there are other periodical cicada broods that emerge in different years and overlap parts of Virginia,” Asaro said. “For example, Brood X, which is the largest in geographic extent, overlaps northern Virginia and parts of southwest Virginia and is due to come out in 2021. Other broods that impact smaller parts of the state are Brood XIV, due in 2025, and Brood XIX, which is on a 13year-cycle. Since this brood emerged in parts of eastern VA in 2011, it is due to return in 2024.” For more information or to see brood maps and dates for a particular area, go to www.magicicada.org.

slicing into the plant tissue with a sharp organ called an ovipositor, which is also used to lay eggs,” said Dr. Chris Asaro, VDOF forest health specialist. “Within each sliced area, known as an egg nest, they deposit up to 20 eggs.” Asaro said that a single female can create about 30 egg nests, laying as many as 600 eggs. “When you consider how many millions of female cicadas were laying eggs over the past few weeks, there are literally billions of slices in the trees,” he said. “ All of these cuts along the length of the outer branches can cause enough structural damage to kill the terminal, which turns brown, a phenomenon known as ‘flagging’ or ‘twig dieback’.” In areas with very heavy cicada emergence, heavy flagging may be apparent, particularly on oaks and trees overhanging fields and roads. This flagging is now visible to
varying degrees across much of Virginia’s Piedmont and Coastal Plain. The degree of flagging on any individual tree may vary from a few scattered branches to almost every available twig. While this may be a major concern to many, most medium- to largesized trees will not suffer any serious longterm damage. “Although it may be hard for some to believe now, most trees will shed the damaged twigs and replace the lost foliage, appearing normal within a month or two,” Asaro said. “On the other hand, fruit trees and recently planted or nurserysized trees may suffer significant impacts from cicadas. Smaller trees generally have thin bark across much of their branch surface, so a much larger proportion of the tree is suitable for egg laying and damage by cicadas. In some extreme cases, small trees may experience enough damage that the entire top is killed back, although many hardwood trees

at a local bank and then leaving her on the side of Midlothian Turnpike about a quarter-mile from Johnston-Willis. “I didn’t think I was going to get out of it alive,” Anderson said. “I figured once he got his money he was going to take care of me, so mostly I was just trying to memorize details so if I did make it out I would have something to tell the police about what he looked like and what the car looked like….I sort of slipped into a state where I didn’t want to do anything to irritate him or get him angrier than he was, so I just sort of shut down I think and just whatever he did, whatever he asked, I did it.” On Dec. 11, Wolfe, 30, of 1706 Leidig St., Apt. 4, Amelia, pleaded guilty in Powhatan County Circuit Court to breaking and entering Anderson’s home at night while armed with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson; robbery; aggravated malicious wounding; arson of an occupied dwelling by the use of explosives; and abduction by force, intimidation or deception. Wolfe, who is a convicted felon, is scheduled to be sentenced for the crimes he committed against Anderson at 9 a.m. on July 22. According to state code, the range of punishment Wolfe faces on the breaking and entering charge, as well the aggravated malicious wounding charge is 20 years to life prison. He is currently being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County near Hopewell. When Wolfe pushed her out of his vehicle on Jan. 25 of last year, Anderson said she was covered in blood.
“I needed 134 stitches just for multiple cuts he made everywhere on my neck and my head,” she said. Because she was taking a blood thinner, the bleeding was difficult to stop, Anderson said. She said a doctor told her she was fortunate that Wolfe pushed her out of his vehicle close to the hospital. “Yeah one doctor told me I was lucky, especially with the brain bleed,” she said. “Yeah between the blood I lost and the brain bleed that if I hadn’t gotten immediate medical attention I would have been in big trouble.” Anderson said she spent three weeks in the hospital. “I didn’t realize how badly injured I was and they’d put me in the neurological ICU and I saw the nurse write on the white board outside the room “critical,” and that just sort of made me realize that I was injured much more than I thought I was,” she said. The only way she could handle the ordeal was to take each day as it came, Anderson said. “I knew the brain injury was serious and I was handicapped as far as not being able to use either arm so I had to depend on everybody else to just do basic things just like to eat because I couldn’t feed myself. Somebody had to feed me,” she said. “It was very depressing [so] I just took it one day at a time because the doctors assured me that everything I had would heal. So it wasn’t overwhelming if I took it one day at a time. It was overwhelming if I thought that I was going to continue to be so handicapped where I couldn’t do basic bodily functions. So I would just think about it one day at a time getting from the morning to the evening and then [the] next day getting

“I would just think about it one day at a time getting from the morning to the evening and then [the] next day getting from the morning to the evening [and that] was the best way for me to handle it.” Mary Anderson, on the recovery after a brutal attack last year in her home. she said stayed by her side almost the entire time. In addition to family and friends, the local community supported her in a number of ways, Anderson said. “Oh they’ve been wonderful with the prayers and well wishes and the flowers and furniture donations and the monetary gifts they gave me I didn’t have to think about bills while I wasn’t working,” she said. “It was enough to cover that and my medical expenses and I’m not even from Powhatan. I’m just very appreciative that they adopted me.” Although she wasn’t able to return to school until the last two weeks of the 2011-2012 school year, her students
stayed in touch with her, Anderson said. “….they sent cards almost on a biweekly basis,” she said. “They sent me a big handmade card that I still have. It was very nice.” Last summer she stayed with one of her sons who’s married – she has two sons and two daughters – and was able to return to full-time teaching this past school year, which started off with a grand reception when she first arrived, Anderson said. “Oh it was wonderful,” she said. “Everybody hugged me. I couldn’t get away from the hugs and the well wishes.” Following a second surgery on her arm in December and about a year’s worth of physical therapy, Anderson said she’s well on the way to a full physical recovery. It’s the mental and the emotional harm that she suffered that lingers, Anderson said. “I’m still being treated,” she said. “I still see a psychiatrist and a counselor. I have a little bit of post traumatic stress disorder where something will just trigger the event all over again. So I think that’s going to take longer than the physical healing.” Since she’s not required to be at Wolfe’s sentencing, Anderson said she’s not sure she’ll attend. However, she said she would like to see Wolfe get enough time so that he’ll never be able to hurt anyone else. “I’d love to see him get a life sentence,” Anderson said. “I’d just be happy to hear he’s put away. I’d close the book on him [and] just be able to move on.” One day at a time. borcutt@powhatantoday.com (804) 598-4305

Hospital: Mother says finding full range of children’s medical services requires too many trips who will enter the third grade at Flat Rock Elementary School this year. “It’s almost as though he’s had a stroke, the symptoms. But because of that he also has a seizure disorder, which is well-controlled.” School doesn’t come easy for Nate, his mother said. “It’s going to be a long road, but we’ve been thrilled with the school system,” she said. “They’ve been very accommodating and he gets physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, technology assistance, vision assistance. He’s got a whole array of services so we’ve been very pleased with what we get there.” What concerns her more, Maliff said, is that because Nate is a special needs child, it’s difficult to find the full range of medical care that he needs without going to a number of different doctors and medical facilities. Years ago when Nate fractured his skull, Maliff said she was shocked to learn that the hospital where she had taken him couldn’t provide the care he needed. It was a “wake-up call,” she said. “Well, as a parent, that was shocking to me,” she said. “I didn’t know that pediatric neurosurgeons were not at every hospital. You just don’t know that as a parent.” A freestanding children’s hospital would take the guessing out of where to take your child for medical treatment, Maliff said. “If we had one children’s hospital, none of these mistakes would be made,” she said. “Parents would know that there’s one place that we can go that all of the care will be received.” It was “eye opening” when she discovered in a full-page newspaper ad that out of the 250 pediatricians listed who support a free-standing children’s hospital that Nate had seen 17 of them, Maliff said. Those doctors, who have formed a group called Pediatricians Associated to Care for Kids – PACKids – have been advocating for a freestanding children’s hospital in the area for about two years, Maliff said. The PACKids group became the impetus for a parents group and more than 800 parents were part of a full-page newspaper ad that the group ran, Maliff said. As one of the leaders of the group, Maliff said she met with the heads of the major medical facilities in the Richmond area with the consensus being that pediatric care can be improved. The concern now, Maliff added, is that her understanding is that
Virginia Commonwealth University has indicated that it would like to build a children’s hospital as part of its medical center. However, Maliff and the other members of her unnamed group feel that it would be better for local healthcare providers and area hospitals to band together to build a children’s hospital rather than have a single entity undertake the project. “A model has been presented by VCU to their health authority board,” she said. “They’ve got about 90 days now to make a decision about that. We
feel like we have 90 days to say we have a chance to do this right. “It’s an important decision and the opportunity that greater Richmond now has to do something really great for years to come is within our grasp. You want the best. You want the ‘A’ team and we have the chance for an ‘A’ team right now if we can get these organizations to come together and it’s not going to be easy but if we sit idly by and allow it to happen, we’ll regret it.” borcutt@powhatantoday.com (804) 5984305

When a small community college housed in temporary facilities opened its doors in 1972, most people knew more about the namesake than the actual school. Almost four decades and 300,00 students later, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is continuing to make an indelible mark on the Metro Richmond area, educating more students almost every year. Dr. Gary Rhodes, president of JRSCC, delivered the good news message as he made his annual rounds to update Hanover and Goochland officials on the institution’s progress. He provides the same message to all the localities served by JSRCC, including the City of Richmond, as well as Louisa, Henrico and Powhatan counties. Rhodes said he sees the college’s relationship with the communities it serves as paramount in maintaining the school’s relevance and importance in the region. He also said that JSRCC depends on the communities and local governments for support. “I make these trips to the county supervisors and city council for a couple of reasons, Rhodes said. “They provide local monies that are used for some operations and things like student scholarships and tutoring at some fa-
cilities. But that’s not the primary reason for the annual and sometimes more often trips. “They are our ambassadors so I want them to know as much as they can about the college and the impact we make in terms of how many citizens we serve in each jurisdiction, Rhodes added. He emphasized the strong community connection the college has fostered in 40 years of operations. For example, the school teamed with the Goochland Historical Society to decorate a new community room at the Goochland campus. The space is available for community and governmental meetings. With an expanding curriculum and plans for a new campus in Varina in Henrico County on the drawing board, Rhodes said the college has its eye on the future, providing 21st century training to a wide array of Central Virginians. With a student enrollment of more than 20,000 students, J. Sarge, as Rhodes likes to call it, is the state’s third largest community college. The system employs almost 1,700 workers at its three campuses located in Henrico and Goochland counties and downtown Richmond. In Goochland, that equates to more than 450 students and 85 high school students registered for dual en-
rollment classes. Hanover students make up about 15 percent of the school’s student body. “It’s a significant portion of our student body, Rhodes recently told Hanover supervisors. Enrollment was slightly off for the first time this year due to a decline in students at the state’s high schools. Rhodes said JSRCC’s enrollment numbers are closely correlated with state
high school diploma and an associates degree. “We’re always committed to better serving our students, Rhodes said. The majority of the area’s emergency medical technicians (EMTs), firefighters and law enforcement are trained at JSRCC, and the college appeals to students who plan to transition to four-year colleges. With more than 90 career programs, Rhodes said the school is an on-ramp “It’s the best bang for to higher education an on-ramp “to the buck when it comes and how people prepare to higher education in to go to work. Core college credthe state of Virginia. its taken at JSRCC will transfer to any J. A typical hurricane season features 12 named storms, including about six hurricanes. This year, NOAA projects 13 to 20 named storms and 7 to 11 hurricanes, several with the potential of being Category 3 or higher. There is a lot you can do to prepare for a storm, including protecting important documents, making sure you have adequate coverage in your homeowners or renters insurance, purchasing battery-operated radios, knowing food safety rules, and having a family emergency “go” kit. At times, hurricane preparation to-do lists can seem overwhelming, especially for families juggling work and school schedules. My office has narrowed down seven essential things you need to know to help prepare for a hurricane.

several days following the storm in case you are unable to make it to the pharmacy. The Department of Health and Human Services also recommends keeping a copy of your current prescription on hand.
Charge cell phones and laptops
While candles can be used in power outages, NOAA recommends flashlights to help prevent fire hazards. Keep flashlights in an easily accessible and central location and check to make sure they have batteries before the storm hits. Don’t forget to buy extra batteries to keep on hand.
Keep cell phones, laptops, and tablets fully charged leading up to the storm. During the storm, avoid using the phone except for serious emergencies and consider staggering usage between family phones in order to save battery power. Keeping phones charged is key, as many weather stations, localities, and power companies now provide critical updates through sites like Twitter. Consider adding the following Twitter handles for updates on storms and resources:
Having water on hand @Randy_Forbes is a priority. The NOAA @GovernorVA recommends at least 1 @VDEM gallon of water per per@VIPIR_Chespeake son, per day, for about @VaDOT three to seven days. This @DomVAPower water would be used for drinking, cooking, and Hook up a landline sanitary purposes in case

How does it all work? Lately, few of us know By Roslyn Ryan

When you look around these days, there’s really no doubt about it: Despite all of our “connections” to one another – including cell phones and Twitter accounts and all the rest of it – many of us seem less connected to the inner workings of the world around us than ever before. I will never forget a young girl I was babysitting a decade or so ago who stared in wide-eyed amazement at the manual window crank on my car door. Granted, the car was an – ahem older model, but I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when she asked me how you were supposed to get the window up and down. “You crank it,” I explained. “Oh,” she said. “But where’s the button?” “There is no button . . .” “So how does the window go up and down?” Oh boy, I thought. Not that I have much room to talk. I distinctly remember wondering, shortly after our dishwasher went kaput a few years ago, what the heck I was going to do with the sink full of dirty dishes piled up in front of me. (It only took me a few seconds to realize the solution to this problem, but still – embarrassing.) I also remember being mildly surprised, when I first moved to the country, that you could actually take a tomato from the garden or an apple from a tree and just eat it (as if you could only consume food once it had been brought to the supermarket). Of course, this kind of thinking is becoming more and more prevalent as we continue to find new and more exciting ways to use technology in our daily lives. The closer we move to a life of pure, push-button convenience, the farther away we seem to drift from a time when we actually played an active role in how things got done, how the things around us worked and how our food was prepared. Please don’t misunderstand me: I would no more like to give up modern conveniences than I would like to have to manually change the television channel or make everything from scratch. I don’t want to exchange mp3s for cassette tapes or go back to a time when you reached someone by phone at home or not at all (and there was no such thing as “leaving a message at the beep”). No, convenience is good. But I can’t help but pine every now again for a time when the gadgets and appliances we owned didn’t require an advanced degree to fix when they broke, when things were simpler. I know that, with time, the things we consider state-of-the-art today will seem terribly antiquated. You also have to wonder what they’ll come up with next. I picture a scene, many years in the future, with a gaggle of grandchildren riding in my car. “What does this button do?” they will ask. “That rolls the window down,” I will reply. “You mean you don’t just do it with a voice command?” Oh boy.
It was this week, in 1962, that the U.S. Supreme Court declared school-sponsored prayers unconstitutional in the landmark case Engel v. Vitale. Public outrage was immediate and widespread. For millions of Americans, the Court had “kicked God out of the schools,” to use a phrase that has entered the culture-war lexicon. Five decades later, Engel continues to be reviled by a good number of televangelists and politicians who take every opportunity to rail against the “godless public schools.” Eliminating school-sponsored prayer, they argue, set America on the road to moral and spiritual ruin. Over the years, the absence of “school prayer” has been linked to almost every social ill, from schoolhouse shootings to drug addiction. One popular YouTube video asks why God doesn’t do something about the terrible things happening to our students in public schools – and a deep voice replies in ominous tones, “I am not allowed in schools.” That the high court’s prayer ruling is to blame for America’s decline makes a compelling narrative, raising millions of dollars for advocacy groups year after year. But here’s the catch: It isn’t true. Let’s start by stating the obvious: The moral state of the union can’t be correlated to the frequency of government prayers in schools or anywhere else. After all, in the era of daily teacher-led prayers, America had any number of social ills, including segregated public schools. Just as it would be absurd to blame teacherled prayer for racism or other moral failures in the 1950s, it makes no sense to blame the absence of such prayers for our moral failures today. But the Big Lie in the school-prayer debate is the false charge that the Supreme Court expelled God or eliminated praying from public schools. In reality, the Court has never banned prayers in schools – in Engel or in any other decision. Instead, the Court ruled that, under the establishment clause of the First Amendment, “it is no part of the business of government to compose official prayers for any group of the American people to recite as a part of a religious program carried on by government.” In other words, state-sponsored prayers in schools are unconstitutional. Students, on the other hand, are fully free to pray in public

schools – alone or in groups, as long as they don’t disrupt the school or interfere with the rights of others. It’s true that in the aftermath of the Engel decision, some school administrators took things too far by prohibiting constitutionally protected student religious expression. Of course, other administrators and school boards practiced civil disobedience by continuing school-sponsored religious practices in defiance of the Court’s ruling. But in recent decades, most public school officials have begun to get religion – and prayer – right. They (finally) understand the difference between government speech promoting religion – which the establishment clause prohibits – and student religious speech, which the free-exercise and freespeech clauses protect. Visit most public schools today and you are likely to see students praying around the flagpole, attending religious club meetings, giving each other religious literature, saying grace before lunch, talking about their faith in class discussions and in other ways expressing their religious convictions. In fact, there is more student religious expression in public schools today than at any time since the 19th century. Far from being “kicked out,” God goes to school today through the First Amendment door. Critics of the Court’s ruling in Engel v. Vitale do have one thing right: The decision changed America – just not in the way they think. Gone are the days when one faith (historically Protestant Christianity) dominated the public schools and the public square. Today, thanks in no small measure to Engel, we are closer than ever to the full religious freedom envisioned by the First Amendment – a level playing field for people of all faiths and none. camp, just like any other kid who nervously awaits that summer treat that many of us remember from childhood. But Jack also looks forward to renewing bonds with boys who have MD and can relate to his problems, understand his concerns and know the challenges. I think it gives him confidence to see kids whose diseases have progressed further than his still doing fun things and enjoying the pure joy that is summer camp.
When first confronted with leaving Jack miles from home for six days, I must admit I had a totally incorrect perception of just what MDA Camp was – and wasn’t. I pictured a low-keyed place where the gloomy nature of the disease permeated everything. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Thanks to the countless MDA

Smile: Summer camp lets kids with special needs ‘just be kids’ Continued from page 10A
volunteers who spend their week off at camp giving one-on-one attention to kids like mine, this camp is a non-stop thrill ride for the campers. This is a place where there are no limits or boundaries or distances too far or goal posts too high for these kids to conquer. For this one week, their world is designed to fit just them, and people surround them to make sure that one thing happens: fun. So, don’t foolishly believe as I did that MDA Camp can’t be much fun. These kids know how to have a good time and they don’t waste one second on pity or what could have been. They are inspiring and inspired. And maybe that’s the biggest
message that I walked away with last year after spending some time at MDA Camp. There was a clear message for all who would listen. Hope, indeed, is a good thing, and these kids live a dream that one day their legs will no longer deteriorate and daily challenges will become easier. We join in their dream of a cure for these innocent children who ask for no more than a chance at life. And if MDA Camp is any indicator, they’ll take full advantage of it. For these kids are just like yours excepting one fatal disorder. They are smart, inquisitive, sometimes difficult and always totally lovable. And believe me, MDA Camp is loud and happy -- again, a page of their lives that all of us should take a lesson from. Despite the prospects, the forecasts and the daily
challenges, these kids live life to the fullest, enjoy each minute and don’t waste a second of it for they know how precious time can be. They scream and holler at the annual talent show, and play tricks on each other in the dorms. And most times, there’s a good squirt gun -- pardon me -- Super Soaker battle going on. And there’s one other thing that there’s no shortage of at MDA Camp: smiles. Thanks to the many of you who contributed at MDA lockups, filled the boot for a local fire department or other events, one of the biggest ones is on my son’s face. And as MDA Camp closed for another year, I could only think of one thing as I drove away. If they can laugh, live and love, so can we.

Q AND A
Former Indians football standouts hoping to go pro By Alex Winfree Contributing Writer
Former Powhatan High School football standouts Eric Watts and Mauriek Goode had outstanding college football careers. Watts played wide receiver and also handled the punting duties at Brevard College in North Carolina. Goode played linebacker at Ferrum. Now that they are out of college, both of them are looking to continue their football careers professionally.
Who have you tried out with or plan to try out for in the future? Watts: I’ve tried out for the Pittsburgh Power which is in the Arena Football League and plan on getting a shot with the Pittsburgh Steelers hopefully in the near future.
Watts
Goode: I’ve tried out for the Richmond Raiders, which I did pretty good. They told me they were going to make a move on me, but I still haven’t heard back from Goode them. Secondly, I went to the NFL Regional Combine which was held at the Baltimore Ravens’ facility. There were over 4,000 guys fighting for 218 spots and it just didn’t pan out. Hopefully my next one will be with the Washington Redskins. PHOTO BY MICHAEL SCHOEFFEL
What have you done both mentally and physically to prepare for professional football? Watts: I’ve prepared physically by working out, sometimes multiple workouts per day. Mentally with prayer and keeping faith that I will get where I need to be. Goode: I study playbooks every chance I can and I call my coaches from Ferrum for advice. I just do the best I can to stay around football so I don’t lose that competitive edge. To stay prepared physically, I have some trainers at Gold’s Gym. I’ve lost 20 pounds which has helped a lot.
What types of accolades and accomplishments did you have in college? Watts: My years there I’ve made first team all-conference at multiple positions including wide receiver, tight end and punter. I’ve also made various all-region teams and was an AllAmerican two times at punter. Goode: I was of the first linebackers at Ferrum in a while to achieve all-conference three years in a row. I got all-region and all-state honors. I was a captain for three years as well. My coach actually gave me a lifetime pass to watch football games at Ferrum.

Post 201 team falls to 361 in season’s first doubleheader Undaunted, 201 coach insists season is still very young
And never was the old adage more apparent than in game one of Post 201s doubleheader against Post 361 (4-1) last Sunday afternoon. By Michael Schoeffel The Post 201 pitching Sports Writer staff – Justin White, NaJee Jones, and Stible Aleman – There are few credos in walked an eye-popping ten baseball that are repeated batters and hit four more, inmore often than “walks and citing a Post 361 merry-goerrors will kill you.”
Watts: When my coach mentioned it to me early in my college career. My position coach at the time explained that not too many players with my size could do what I do, not to mention my punting abilities. Goode: My coach once said in practice that some of the guys thought they were good, but he said only two guys on this team are good enough to play professionally and I was one of them. That’s when I realized I really could do it. I have also been better than a lot of the guys at try outs of attended, which has really motivated me to work even harder.

When did you realize playing professional football might be a reality?

I am a complete mess, Powhatan County. After spending a caffeine-fueled weekend at the Group AAA state jubilee at Westfield High Schoo two weeks ago, I’ve returned home weak, ravaged and mildly sun burnt – a victim of this profession known as sports journalism. The gig has its perks, for sure. The most obvious one being that I get paid to watch and write about sporting events. On the whole, it’s a pretty great field to get into. But two weekends ago, while staying at a Holiday Inn in Chantilly, I felt a bit out of my ele-
ment. And it all started with a breakfast dupe for the ages. It went a bit like this. After spending Friday evening holed up in my hotel room listening to the rain patter on the bedside window, I made plans to depart early Saturday morning to watch the reigning tennis state champion, Brett Moorhead, defend his title. The match was to take place at Jefferson District Park, which was located in the quaint town of Falls Church, about 25 minutes from my hotel. Saturday morning started out without so much as a hiccup. I woke up at 8 o’clock sharp, ample time to shower and eat before jumping on Route 66 towards Falls Church. But my trip was derailed be-
fore I made it out of the lobby. As I headed toward the exit, a small, enthusiastic man of unknown nationality (he looked a bit like an Indian Elijiah Wood) intercepted me and suckered me into a meal that I had no real interest in eating. “You want breakfast?” he clamored. “Best turkey sausage in all of town! Make your tongue melt like salt on slug!” He put his arm around my shoulder and steered me towards an adjoining restaurant. I initially resisted, but yielded after several seconds. “What the heck,” I thought. “I’m sure the food is complimentary. Plus that turkey sausage see Sporting page 4B

Q and A: Coaches, family and friends have inspired duo in their quest to play pro football Continued from page 1B
How did the opportunity to try to go pro come about? Watts: With my coaches believing in my abilities. They got scouts from different teams including the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Minnesota Vikings to come visit my school which has never happened at the school before. Goode: Mostly I’ve just done it through research. That’s where an

I never saw him play in person, but play at the next level? I’ve seen film of him. He coached Watts: It depends on what the me at both running back and lineteam needs are. you’ll buy?
Goode: My linebacking days are probably over because of my size. I’m going to try to play running back or full back. I know if I play full back I’ll have to add more weight. Right now physically I’m where I need to be for running back.
Who has been the most helpful/inspiring person for you throughout your career? Watts: Many people have helped inspire me during my career including fans, friends and school faculty, but most of all my parents. They have always inspired me and have taught me to always give everything

Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you play? Watts: I usually just throw in my headphones and listen to some music, pray and get in the zone. Goode: I like to listen to music before games. One particular song I liked when I was at Powhatan was “Stay Fly” by Three 6 Mafia.

“But it’s still early in the season,” he added. “This is only our third game, so we just have to keep on rolling.” The game was originally scheduled as a home game for Post 201, but sub-par conditions at Baltimore Field in Powhatan forced the game to be played at Post 361’s home field – Deep Run High School. Consequently, the July 13th game between the two teams will now be played at Powhatan High instead of Deep Run. Post 361 scored four runs in the first after the Post 201 defense committed two errors and White issued two bases-loaded walks. Matt Simms was the only batter in the inning to drive in a run with a hit – a double to deep left field that came about five
feet short of clearing the chain link fence. The sea didn’t get any calmer for White in the bottom of the second. After striking out the first batter of the inning, White proceeded to walk the next six, bringing home the fifth, sixth, and seventh runs of the ball game. White was pulled in favor of Jones after 1 2/3 innings, who promptly coaxed the batter into a ground out to end the inning. Post 201 showed resolve in the top of the third, scoring two runs – the first on a Stewart Brown triple, the second on an infield single by Colin Lawless. With the score resting at 7-3 in the bottom of the third, Post 201 had a chance to thwart the Post 361 offense and head into the fourth within striking distance of the lead. But
walks and errors ultimately sent the game spiraling out of control. After Post 361 loaded the bases, Jones walked Brandon Stein and then drilled Michael Simms, pushing the score to 9-3. From there, the rout was on. Chad Shaw sliced an RBI single into right, and Luke Ransom followed with a monster shot to centerfield – a grand slam – to give Post 361 a 14-3 lead. They would tack on one more run before the day was over. The second game saw Post 201 suffer a similar fate, losing 11-0. They will try to rebound from the doubleheader sweep tomorrow night, June 27, when they travel to Shepherd Stadium to take on Post 284B at 7 p.m. “We’ll get it,” said Hannum, who is in his third year as head coach of Post 201. “We’re going to keep plugging away, and we’ll get it.”

sounds like a real adrenaline rush. Before I knew it, I was being led down some dark, brick-lined hallway into a blood-red leather booth. The toothy-mugged man whipped out a menu and poured a glass of orange juice in what seemed like one fluid motion. It resembled a slight-of-hand trick from a David Blaine television special. “Buffet is around the corner, he said with a smile. “If you go back twice, it’s not complimentary! He laughed loudly and shuffled into the darkness. As I watched him walk away, I decided that he wasn’t such a bad guy after all. Sure, he had come on a little strong with the whole arm-around-theshoulder approach. But what the heck, you can’t fault a man for being genuinely excited about his job. Plus, he had shown me to a free breakfast and impressed me with his magician-like juice pouring skills. “This guy’s got couth, I thought. “No doubt. After I finished my meal – which consisted of fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy ketchup-drenched hash browns, and two turkey sausage patties that tasted like seasoned rubber – I packed up my meager belongings and hopped out of the booth at 8:35. “Take ‘er easy, I said to my waiter. “You were right about that sausage. I can barely feel my tongue. “Whoa, whoa, buddy, he proclaimed, leaping out of his crouch to shove a hand in my chest. “You have to pay bill. “What? Who’s Bill? I exclaimed.

“You said it was complimentary. “I said if you went back second time it wasn’t complimentary, he said. “Huh? I said. “Pay bill, he demanded. “Alright, I said. “But you still haven’t told me who Bill is. Feeling thoroughly conned, I gritted my teeth and signed the $12.96 check. The orange juice cost four George Washingtons by itself. I never made it to the court that day. Most of the morning was spent speeding up and down the streets of Falls Church frantically searching for Jefferson District Park. Somewhere nearby, Brett Moorhead was winning his second straight state title. But I wouldn’t get to witness it. Map Quest had informed me that the courts were located at 7900 Lee Street, but for whatever reason Lee Street abruptly and illogically turned into S Washington at the 6900 block. I drove around like a brainless tourist, nearly sideswiping a parked white Mercedes Benz, before finally deciding to throw in the towel and head back to the hotel via Route 66. Perhaps it was some sort of universal conspiracy meant to teach me a lesson about proper planning and foresight. Maybe it was simply a stroke of ill fortune. Either way, by the end of the weekend, I had absorbed one crucial and undeniable life truth: Never assume anything is complimentary. Especially breakfast at a Holiday Inn in Northern Virginia. Oh, and I also learned one other thing: never, under any circumstance, rely on Map Quest to get you somewhere without incident.*

Therapist oers tips for pelvic oor pain Contributed report Many women between the ages of 18 and 60 suffer from some form of pelvic floor dysfunction and feel it is part of the normal aging process, but according to physical therapist Amanda Tolbert, PT, DPT of Tidewater Physical Therapy Inc , therapy can improve many of the symptoms sufferers write off as a new reality. Tolbert explained that the muscles of the pelvic floor are located inside the pelvis between the pubic bone in front and the tail bone, or the coccyx, in back. They function as support for the internal organs, help control elimination from the bladder and the bowel and are involved in sexual response. The muscles can become very painful if they are tightened for a long period of time, according to Tolbert. They may also spasm causing a dull aching pain through the pelvis, buttocks or hips and occasionally down the leg, she said. The pain may present itself as pressure, burning or aching that is localized in the pelvic organs, genital region, bones of the pelvis or abdomen. “The causes of this condition are not well understood,â€? Tolbert said. “A history of pelvic or abdominal surgery and disease may lead to muscle tension and guarding. Emotional stress, poor posture or physical trauma may also contribute to subconscious tightening and/or guarding of the pel-
vic muscles, she added. “A physical therapy evaluation can help decide the best approach to eliminating and managing pain, Tolbert said. “There are many treatments available aimed at restoring normal function to a muscle and eliminating tension. Posture and therapeutic exercises are frequently recommended for this problem, according to Tolbert. Self care techniques are encouraged, like relaxation and stress management training, as well as muscle awareness training. “The way you carry your body all day can affect the pelvic floor muscles, Tolbert said. “When standing , try to keep your knees unlocked and the buttocks and abdomen relaxed. While sitting, Tolbert recommended that patients use proper support for the back and support the feet. When lying down, comfort and support are essential to obtaining relaxation. Most people benefit from elevating the legs on a pillow or two, she said. As for relaxation techniques, Tolbert said they require practice and may not bring immediate relief. What works from patient to patient will vary, she added. Popular techniques include, deep belly or diaphragmatic breathing, contract-relax muscle exercises and imagery exercises. Many people benefit from physical therapy to
help them learn muscle control and pain management strategies, Tolbert said, while others learn to better manage their symptoms. Treatment plans are individualized and determined following a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation. “It is important to remember that changes in symptoms may occur immediately or take several months to improve, Tolbert said. Tolbert received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. In 2010, she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University. Tolbert specializes in treating women’s health related disorders such as incontinence, pelvic pain disorders and pelvic organ prolapse. Tolbert is based at Tidewater Physical Therapy’s Powhatan Clinic, located at 3510 Anderson Highway, Suite 2, in Powhatan, which can be reached by calling 804-598-2100.
