Sentencing continued for man accused of assaulting officers Sentencing for a man accused of assaulting two Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office deputies has been delayed. Christopher Monroe Braswell, 32, of 228 Petersburg Road, Powhatan, was scheduled to be sentenced last week in Powhatan County Circuit Court on felony charges that he assaulted two deputies on Sept. 7. Braswell also is charged with misdemeanor offenses of resisting arrest and destruction of property on Sept. 7. Court records indicate that Braswell pleaded guilty to all four offenses and sentencing was set for last week before Circuit Court Judge Paul W. Cella. Braswell is being represented by court-appointed attorney Ross Charles Allen of the Midlothian law firm of Smith & Wells. However, John R. Smith of the firm appeared in Allen’s place and stated that Allen could not be present due to a conflict. On defense’s motion, Cella continued the case until Aug. 13, for a new sentencing date to be set and also issued a show cause order for Allen to appear in court the same day to explain why he was not present on Friday.

challenging. One initial hurdle many of the participants had to overcome? The fear of having their work judged. While Ash, who taught writing for years, understands where the trepidation comes from, she insists it soon becomes a non-issue for many of the students “As we continue to learn about one another, there is less fear,” said Ash, explaining that those who are not yet comfortable reading aloud are not required to do so. The most important thing, said Ash, is simply to get the stories down. The thing she wants people to take away is that no matter what your age or station in life, “you are still special – you are still valuable,” said Ash. “And we need to know about all of it.”

feelings rushed out,” said Black. “It is an adventure each time I write.” To Linnea Ash, the group’s founder, the idea of teaching a class in memoir-writing came to her when she realized the impact such a course might have on the county’s senior population. Talking last week about the importance of capturing one’s life story on paper, Ash pointed out just how much is lost when family members have no record of past generations. “It’s so important,” said Ash of leaving a written account for future generations. “Nothing is more important.” Ash said the class members have all become closer as they’ve learned more about each other’s lives and some particiFor more information pants drive from as far away as Williamsburg to on the memior class, please call Linnea Ash at attend each month. line for a significant portion of the project. Ned S. the three entities. The project will replace aging DOC waterlines and provide additional water for DOC facilities, Goochland and Powhatan. The project includes replacing an 8-inch water line along U.S. 6 in Goochland, as well as water distribution lines across the James River to Powhatan. Construction on the project began in June and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. “This is a basic element of infrastructure,” said State Sen. John C. Watkins, R-Powhatan. “It is essential to the future development of Powhatan and of Goochland and they are working together with another state agency that needs this infrastructure as well. So it’s good to have that kind of collaboration working together. This sets the framework for the next 50 years. It’s going to be a water source. It’s going to be the beginning of future lines and future resources for development and I’m talking about commercial development as well as residential. Commercial is key and you can’t do it

without water and sewer.” Del. R. Lee Ware, RPowhatan, who represents the 65th District in the House of Delegates, which includes all of Powhatan and about half of Goochland, also was at last week’s ceremony and spoke in a similar vein about the project. “It’s important in two regards,” Ware said. “One is the intrinsic value to the corrections center. The pipes have been way overdue for replacement and that’s great. The added benefit is that in economic development it provides the basis for expanding business, commercial opportunities for the two localities.” Barry Hodge, chairman of the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors, underscored Powhatan’s enthusiasm for the project. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for Powhatan to increase the water supply for the Route 60 corridor in a very fiscally prudent manner,” he said. “We want to especially thank Sen. Watkins and Del. Ware for their support and the funding included in the state capital budget for the project. Powhatan looks forward to many years of collaboration with Goochland

ments should work together and how we can reap rewards for all the citizens by working jointly with neighboring jurisdictions,” Creasey said. The benefit of the project for Goochland will be significant, he added. “It’ll be huge,” Creasey said. “It will be a huge impact because it should give us water for the next 50 to 75 years, I’d say.”

Powhatan Today, July 17, 2013 Mikey Partusch and his wife, Eloisa Michelle, say they hope their new business, Little Cottage Greenhouse, will help introduce more county residents to the beauty of organically grown plants.

t takes a special kind of person to be able to look at a 50-year-old abandoned chicken house and see a business opportunity. But it may take an even more unique individual – one blessed with plenty of stamina, optimism and vigor – to turn that vision into a reality. Fortunately for all stripe – everywhere one

Powhatan County gardeners, Mikey Partusch and Eloisa Michelle are just those kinds of people. Armed with little more than a passion for plants and what they knew in their hearts was a solid business plan, the couple recently launched Little Cottage Greenhouse at 3275 Maidens Road (Route 522) in Powhatan. From inside a building once used to house poultry, the two now raise and sell annuals, perennials and vegetable plants. Partusch and Michelle, who live in a small cottage on the same property as the greenhouse (hence the name) spend their days tending to the dozens of tables bursting with lush plants of just about every

turns, a new variety beckons the eye. All of their plants are organic and grown from seed, including a number of heirloom variety vegetables. To Partusch, this was particularly important given the fact that fresh, organic food is still a comparatively small segment of the choices available to consumers these days. “It is such a big industry, and there’s enough big agriculture out there, so that leaves a place for people like us who are doing it a different way,” he said. Partusch points out that the organic element to what they do also tends to result in a better product, in part because plants must be afforded extra care. Care seems to be a watchword at Little Cottage, from the handmade

tables in the greenhouse to the beautifully decorated roadside stand where they sell some of their wares. Of course, as with any business, the polished façade the customer sees is the end product of months of grueling work. In Partusch and Michelle’s case, the work included completely gutting the somewhat neglected chicken house, which had been used until about five years ago by the property owners, Bob and Elizabeth Cosby. When Partusch, who has worked in and around greenhouses for over a decade, and Michelle first approached the Cosbys with the idea of turning the building into a greenhouse, the proposal was met with immediate ap-

proval. “I thought it was a good idea,” said Bob Cosby, a former dairy farmer who recently retired after serving on Powhatan County’s Board of Supervisors for 40 years. “And knowing them, I knew it was going to look just as good as it possibly could.” Once the couple got the go-ahead, the real work began. Since the cavernous 32x180- foot space had initially been designed for chickens rather than plants, the couple soon realized it would need a complete overhaul. That meant solving a host of logistical problems, from how to get heat in the winter (space heaters) to how to remove the enormous amount of

chicken droppings leftover from the previous tenants (elbow grease). When it came to working with the building itself, the couple learned it was easier to use what they had than try to reengineer the space. “There was no rhyme or reason,” said Partusch, “you just had to go with what was there.” Many of the issues they faced had to be solved on the fly, including how to get the plastic sheeting secured on the roof – a process that took four tries and plenty of patience. Finally, after eight months and countless hours, the couple opened their doors in June. They are now open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Business has been wonderful so far, they both agree, with plenty of local support and a steady stream of out-of-town visitors who happen to be passing by, drawn in by the colorful roadside display. To Michelle, the project has been the ultimate experiment in recycling – and a good lesson in reaping the rewards of hard work and perseverance. “The thing we are so ecstatic about is the fact that we were able to take this old structure and turn it into something that is actually giving back,” she said, adding that the feedback from the community so far has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s been extremely wonderful to see people embrace it.”

hanging baskets – it also is diversifying, he said, including coming up with the catchy new name. “Yeah, well, because I wanted a play on words and because we’re trying to be more of a gift store – nice packaging – so that if you give it as a gift, there’s nothing else you have to do,” he said. Williams operated the Moss House for nine years before revamping

the business about a month ago, he said, adding that reaction has been “very good.” “We’re going to have a website and do more Internet marketing,” he said. “We have sterling silver jewelry and [we’re] focusing more on local and Virginia wines. We do wine tastings every other week on Fridays.” Sacks Gift Avenue is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.

Court: Man gets two years a defenseless victim who had been involved in a fight with another Beaumont resident, causing a laceration to the victim’s forehead. Beasley recommended that Lawrence be sentenced to the low end of state sentencing guidelines, which called for a range of punishment of one year and nine months of incarceration to four years and 11 months. In arguing for leniency, Gore told the court that except for the laceration, the incident would have been considered a common occurrence at Beaumont. What landed Lawrence in Beaumont in the first place, Gore said, was a single-day “cluster of crimes in Henrico when Lawrence was 16, which included two robbery convictions and a conviction for felonious assault. All time was suspended, court records indicate. Since he has been incarcerated, Lawrence has completed a substance abuse program, an aggression management course, earned his high school diploma and even taken a quilting course, Gore said.

Gore also asked Cella to take into account that had it not been for the offense at Beaumont, Lawrence believes that when his case in Henrico was supposed to have been reviewed last December, that he would have been released earlier. The matters in Henrico have now been continued to Dec. 12. “Judge, this is an argument based on ifs, ands and buts, Beasley countered. “The fact is, he sucker punched a kid and split his head open. Lawrence said the victim was not defenseless and that the reason he hit him was because the victim had kicked his friend in the face. “I was just trying to break it up, Lawrence said. While noting that Lawrence had done things while incarcerated to improve himself, Cella said he thought sentencing him to the low end of the guidelines was appropriate. Cella then sentenced Lawrence to five years in prison, with all but one year and nine months suspended. borcutt@powhatantoday.com (804) 598-4305

came to America to escape religious persecution in France. The church existed until it was deconsecrated by the Southern Diocese in 1939, according to District 5 Supervisor Carson Tucker, who is president-emeritus of the Michaux-St. James Foundation Inc. “And believe it or not, the diocese forgot it existed,” Tucker said. “So for many years it belonged to the ‘community.’ That means it belonged to everybody and nobody. So nobody maintained it.” Powhatan County used the building as a voting precinct for about 50 years, Tucker said. “It was in pretty bad shape,” he added. The Michaux-St. James Foundation was formed in 1977, Tucker said, adding that the church and land and were donated to the group by J.A. Tillman, former clerk of Powhatan County Circuit

Court. “So in 1977, we began a long and laborious process of trying to stabilize first the church and then to bring it back to usage, which you see now,” Tucker said. “It’s been a long haul. A lot of money has been pumped into this, but mostly blood, sweat and tears and love.” The foundation is currently in the process of restoring the Sallie Michaux House next door to the church, Tucker said, adding that the house, which was built in 1880, was donated to the Episcopal Church and used for a rectory and then purchased by the foundation in 2007. “The mission of the organization revolves around historic and environmental preservation of the northern part of Powhatan County,” Tucker said, noting that the intersection where the church sits used to be known as Pineville, but later came to be called Michaux in honor of the Michaux family who settled in the area. “I attended the last service in this church [July, 1938] when I was 10 years old with my grandparents,” said 85year-old William Michaux Buchanan, who spent his summers as a youth working on the Michaux family farm. Buchanan said he plans to be buried in the nearby Michaux Grant Cemetery when he dies and also plans on having a memorial service held for him at St. James Chapel. “I just can’t be appreciative enough how all the people right here in this area have put everything together,” Buchanan said. “This place is beyond my mind. heart.” The foundation is proud of the fact that following the grand opening of nearby Powhatan State Park on the Historic James, Gov. Robert F. “Bob” McDonnell stopped to visit the church and the Sallie Michaux House on an invitation from Del. R. Lee Ware, R-Powhatan. Veterans, McDonnell and Buchanan talked about their military service, Tucker said. The governor also spoke with Richard F. O’Hare, a member of the foundation’s board of directors who served with the 82nd Airborne of the U.S. Army. “And when he looked at my 82nd patch, he said, ‘You’re the real deal,’” O’Hare said. “I spent two tours in Vietnam and it really meant a lot.” McDonnell spent about 35 minutes visiting the church and the Sallie Michaux House, Tucker said. “I was struck by his sincerity,” Tucker said. “I was struck by the number of questions that he asked about history and architecture and preservation and volunteerism. He was really engaged…He was just really in the moment while he was here. We were very impressed.” As far as he knows, McDonnell is the first and only Virginia governor to visit the church, Tucker said. Scott Morrison, who also is a member of the foundation’s board of directors, said that some local contractors have

helped with the project and volunteers have ranged in age from teenagers to those in their 80s. “And it really has become a major community effort,” he added. Board member Sara Corbett said that since the church was restored in 2010, it has hosted several weddings, a baby shower, family reunions and other events as well. “This was used as a 4H center,” Tucker said. “It was used for community dances during the 20s and 30s. We’re back where it was before and that was our intent – to return it to useful.” A transplant from West Virginia, board member Cindy Booten said she fell in love with St. James Church the first time she stepped foot in it as a voter. “And with a building like this, there’s so much heart and soul – so much energy in it from those who have been here in the past and who have loved it and who’ve built it and who’ve cared for it,” she said. “You feel it when you walk in here and if you have an open heart, no matter what age you are, you can feel it and you love it and you want to be a part of it.” There are a little more than 150 members in the Michaux-St. James Foundation and the goal is to reach 300 within the next year, Morrison said. Memberships are $25 annually, he said. For more information, visit the foundation’s website at www. msjf.org or call (804) 598-2213.

Hitting the open road with kids? Good luck

County scouts enjoy time with governor

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If your family growing up was anything like mine, you probably enjoyed nothing more than a good, long trip in the car. All that togetherness, all that time to just sit and talk and revel in each other’s company. Sure, you could nod off if you liked, but why would you do that when you could enjoy a spirited – but totally civil – debate over anything from U.S. foreign policy to little-known Bible trivia? That’s what it was like hitting the open road with your family too, right? Oh, wait, I’m sorry. That wasn’t what it was like for us either. Please don’t misunderstand – my parents tried hard. Regardless of the mounting evidence, which included every single previous journey they had taken with my sister and me, my mom and dad seemed to embark on each family trip convinced that this one would be different. There would be no fighting or biting or name-calling. No whining or tears. No announcement – five minutes after pulling out of a rest stop – that someone actually did have to go to the restroom. Sadly, they were mistaken just about every time. My sister and I were usually good for about the amount of time it took to get from the bottom of the driveway to the end of our own street. After that, all bets were off. Simply put, placing us is a car and shutting the doors seemed to turn us both into vicious, feral little demons. I am not making this up. Once, when we were still in car seats, my sister and I got in such a bad fight over the name of a store we were parked in front of (neither one of us could actually read) that my mother had to pile suitcases between us lest we claw each other’s eyes out. Even a game of license plate Bingo had the potential to go South at a moment’s notice. Allegations of cheating ran rampant and most games were abandoned before a clear winner could be determined. My parents had ways of getting us back. Dad eventually learned to respond to each whiny “How much longer till we get there?” by adding an hour or two to his previous answer. (Message received: We stopped asking.) Mom had a slightly different tactic: prayer. A devout Catholic like my father, she would listen to only so many complaints about the radio station or the air conditioning before the rosary beads came out and the whole car was grudgingly forced into an endless round of Our Fathers and Hail Marys. Hard as it was on them, my parents never gave up carting my sister and me on trips to the beach and to see relatives, never letting on that perhaps those trips were harder on them than they were on us. If you happen to be heading out on the open road with your family this summer, I wish you a safe – and peaceful – journey. And even if it can’t be peaceful, I hope it’s at least memorable. Now that I’m older and (hopefully) wiser, I’ve thanked my parents many, many times for all they endured on our behalf and the wonderful memories I have of the places we visited. Someday – I can almost guarantee – your kids will thank you too.

My Point of View

Clash between UVa students, police provides us with teachable moment Carson Tucker Contributing columnist

Initially I was surprised by my need to write this column. Son of a (military) police officer; a staunch supporter of law enforcement professionals; a professor at the National Criminal Justice Command College, I very much respect and admire the vast majority of the men and women who stand between civilized society and that minority of people who are intent on harming and taking advantage of law-abiding citizens. My gratitude to those high-professional law enforcement officers, who put themselves in harm’s way for us, is unbounded. That makes my distress at the apparent behaviors of the ABC enforcement officers recently in the Barracks Road Shopping Center parking lot in Charlottesville particularly glaring. The Richmond Times-Dispatch called their actions a “cowboy abuse of power.” Six agents, one with a drawn gun, accosted three female UVa students. The agents assumed a case of bottled water was a case of beer, representing a potential illegal underage purchase of alcohol. What ensued in the parking lot was, by every description, a testosterone-fueled overreaction of farcical proportions. The initial response of an Alcohol Beverage Control spokesperson was that nothing was done inappropriately and that the ABC officers were following protocol. I want to make several points. First, where was the legitimate and moderating management of the Team of Six by the Special Agent in Charge? Why did he allow this incident to occur and to escalate so dramatically? Where was his lead-

ership? Where was his calming influence? What is he paid to do if not this thing we call leadership? Second, I invite you to put yourself in the young women’s shoes, as much as anyone can who has not been in such a chaotic and threatening situation. A national report indicates that one out of three women has been attacked, brutalized, raped, abused, or accosted. Not something our society should be proud of. And here we have three young women, having done nothing wrong, approached by five men and one woman, carrying guns, un-uniformed, in a dark parking lot. The women’s reaction was terror and befuddlement in the face of the unknown. Terror momentarily drives out reason. Did the officers not understand these simple dynamics? Did they care? Did they consider – before drawing a gun, screaming, banging on the women’s car windows – what panic they were causing and escalating? I repeat: were they that insensitive and that callous? I want you to imagine your daughter in that situation and answer for yourself what you would have had her do. And if your daughter reacted in panic, having done no wrong to initiate the encounter, would you condemn her for being terrified? Would you be supine when she was thereafter, in a paroxysm of official anger, charged with three, count them, three felonies? (I applaud the perspective and good judgment of the Commonwealth Attorney, who dismissed all charges, albeit not before the driver had been cuffed and spent a full night and half a day in jail. In jail! Because she bought bottled water and tried to protect herself from violence.)

There are those who will say, “These things happen. Ms. Daly and her sorority sisters were just collateral damage . . . wrong place, wrong time . . . sorry about that.” Is that an acceptable defense for the ABC officers’ over-the-top performance? What if it had been three young men in that SUV instead of three young women – adrenaline, testosterone, and panic inside the car and adrenaline, testosterone, and power outside the car – the confrontation could have ended up deadly. Worth it for a carton of water . . . or even, yes, for a case of beer? My third point. I attended an excellent session recently here in our County put on for young people and their parents to get clear guidance from law enforcement agents on how to act and behave when a police officer pulls over a young person for a traffic offense. One of the questions from the audience was: “If my child is unsure of the legitimacy of the individual stopping him/her, what is the best thing my kid can do, especially at night?” The answer was succinct: “The young person (or anybody) fearing that an individual pulling them over is not a real police officer should put the car’s flashers on, keep both hands on the steering wheel, drive slowly and deliberately to the nearest lighted and peopled gas station or store, and call 911.” When I repeat this guidance to the young people with whom I interact, they answer, often as not, “Right! Like I don’t think they’ll throw the book at me!” While this reaction is partly youthful acting-out, I detect a kernel of sincerity in many of the young see UVa page 9A

E N G AG E M E N T Gordon & Mooney Mr. and Mrs. Blanton Gordon of Powhatan announce the engagement of their daughter, Mallory Blanton Gordon, to Brett Michael Mooney, son of Paul Mooney and Dora Salazar of Virginia Beach. The future bride graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. She is employed as a senior program manager at Snagajob. people, which brings me to my last point. Some will argue that any rush-to-judgment is premature and unfair to the ABC officers. By all means, let due process unfold to get all the facts on the table. But ABC has already instituted “an immediate change” (a uniform presence) and two ABC “internal reviews” have already been done and now a State Police review is underway. Although we don’t yet have all the facts on the table, do we believe that these reviews (other than the first, which remember, found “no wrongdoing” on the part of the officers) would have been undertaken had the public not expressed its outrage and denounced the apparent overreach of the ABC officers in question? So while we do want the reviews to proceed, we know that the ABC would like this issue to have been buried early on. Only the press and the public weighing in have forced the issue to be taken seriously.

A Modest Proposal

of law enforcement agents – have caused. Let us say ABC– and other police agencies – play this video in every academy training program and then engage in a discussion of effect, proportionality, trust, balance, moderation, and common fairness and decency required of officers of the law in the interaction with the public. If we can raise awareness and sensitivity of a few, we will have made something positive out of this sad and unnecessary incident. Are we capable? Are we willing? The vast majority of law enforcement officials do their jobs daily with the best intentions and in the most civil and respectful way. Why not try to reach even those whose idea of their power would make Attila the Hun blush?

Summing Up When fear and disdain are the emotions people feel when interacting with police officers, those police officers – and the departments and agencies they represent – lose the public’s respect. That, coupled with our other political problems, generates anti-government mindsets and erodes the general public’s support of law-and-order. They question government’s motives, sincerity, intentions, and actions. We should not be surprised, then, that so many folks feel so strongly negative about government in general and withhold their support. That’s the beginning of civil dissolution. When those feelings and perceptions are applied especially toward police, whose mission is to protect us, we are indeed in trouble as a society.

Let us shift from the “ain’t it terrible” to a consideration of how best to use this unfortunate incident in Charlottesville as a teachable moment. Let us assume that ABC and the other agencies involved in a “review” do not circle the wagons and succumb to omerta. Let’s assume that the three women are given an apology. What if ABC – and/or other police agencies – were to take the bold move of asking the women to participate in making a short video wherein they describe t he panic, terror and confusion they experienced in the take-down. Let them speak emotionally of the efCarson Tucker is a Powfect this confrontation and ar- hatan County Supervisor represt – and perhaps their psy- resenting District 5. chological trauma and distrust

Woodson bound for Hall of Fame By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

Legendary Powhatan High School football coach Jim Woodson has been selected to the 2013 Virginia High School Hall of Fame. The class of 2013, the 24th to be inducted, will bring the total membership to 241. Woodson has led Powhatan High School to two VHSL state football championships, claiming a Division 2 title in 1996 and a Division 4 title

in 2003. During his 28 years as the head coach, his Powhatan teams have compiled a 244-78-1 record; won 15 district championships; eight regional championships; played in four state title games and had two state runner-up finishes in 1997 and 2003. Twice, in 1996 and 2003, he was selected state coach of the year; as well as Richmond all-Metro coach of the year five times (1991, 1996, 1997, 2003 and 2005). He was also selected to coach in the Virginia High School Coaches Association

(VHSCA) all-star game five times. In addition to his outstanding record as a head football coach, Woodson has served as athletic director at Powhatan since 1999. Woodson first came to Powhatan in 1979 and has coached JV football (1979-82); assistant varsity football (1983-4); JV boys basketball (1979, 1982-94); varsity boys basketball (1980-81) and assistant varsity boys basketball (1995-2000). or Powhatan native Taylor Dalton, equestrian has never been about horsing around. When the 21-year old rising senior at Lynchburg College isn’t working towards a bachelors of science in biology, she is at home circling the ring – five days a week for two to three hours per day. That dedication to her craft has paid off in a very tangible way: Dalton recently took home second place in the Walk-Trot-Canter Eq-

Legion Post 201 wins big over 186 Alex Winfree Contributing Writer

American Legion Post 201 had a huge offensive night and starting pitcher Justin White dominated the batters of Post 186 in a 12-2 win at Powhatan’s Baltimore Field Tuesday night. The game went just eight innings due to the mercy rule. White would be in full control from the start as he got Post 186 to go down 1-2-3 in the top of the first. Post 186 followed, but their offense would not be held down long. White posted another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second and in the bottom of the frame Post 201 picked up its first run when Nicky Mailo scored on a passed ball. see Legion page 2B

Jenkins signs on to lead BSH Knights football team Former Essex High School head coach succeeds Brice Fritts Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

For the first time in over a decade, there will be a head football coach at Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot Academy without the surname “Henderson” or “Fritts.” Robbie Jenkins, a 2002 graduate of Bridgewater College, has officially been named successor to Brice

Fritts – a man who led the Knights to a state championship victory in Jenkins 2012. Fritts is departing to teach eighth grade biology at Tuckahoe Middle and will join another former BSH head coach, Mike Henderson, on the staff at Douglas Freeman High. It will be Jenkins’ second head coaching job.

With Independence Day now in the rear view mirror, summertime has officially reached fifth gear. It’s the season for hamburgers, hot dogs, 95-degree afternoons, poolside meditations and – for the athletically-inclined individuals out there – a full schedule of 5Ks, 7.4Ks (yes, they exist), 10Ks, marathons, triathlons, Muddy Buddies, Warrior Dashes and many other athletic events peppered across this wild and wonderful Commonwealth known as Ol’ Virginny. Thankfully, all of these events have been consolidated into a single, useful website. Just type “Running in the USA VA” into Google, click on the first link that pops up, and bada-bing: you now have full access to (presumably) every running event taking place in the Commonwealth from the date of your visit until Sept 8. The Richmond area alone is hosting two events in the month of July, starting with the GoRUCK Challenge (which took place on Friday, July 12) and concluding with the Pony Pasture 5K on July 27. But one event that you won’t find on the Running in the USA website is the Great Bull Run, for what may be fairly obvious reason. The GBR arrives at the Virginia Motorsports Park (Petersburg) on Aug. 24 and promises to be the most dangerous running event in the state of Virginia this summer. Aside from the fact that it’s guaranteed to shoot your adrenaline level to an all-time high, it also holds the unique distinction of being the only competition that could end with somebody getting gored by a muscled beast weighing in at more than half-a-ton. Carpe diem! The GBR website guarantees that all participants will receive the following gifts after the completion of the race: • Access to the day-long festival featuring great bands, tasty food, fun games and cold beer. • One Great Bull Run t-shirt. • One Great Bull Run bandana. • One beer. What the website fails to mention is that all of these incentives depend on whether the participant actually survives the run. A dead man has absolutely no use for a cold beer. (The same cannot be said for a mildly injured man.) But if shelling out $60 to risk serious injury doesn’t quite fit on your weekend

Legion: Powhatan ball team gaining steam as season rolls on Coach: Jenkins says he’s ready Continued from page 1B

As well as White was pitching Post 186 knew they would have to play small ball to stay in the game. Matt Miller led off the third for Post 186 with a walk and quickly stole second. He advanced to third on a ground out and scored one of his team’s two runs on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Matt Jamery. White was not affected by the run and quickly recovered getting Eric Smigo to lineout to end the inning. Post 201 was shutout in the bottom of the third and neither team could score in the fourth, but Post 186 took their first and only lead of the game in the top of the fifth after 201’s defense got a little sloppy. After Miller singled, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Granger hit what looked to be sure out to center

fielder Stibel Aleman, but the ball bounced right out of his glove. Shortstop Paul Wood couldn’t find the handle on Aleman’s throw and Miller came around to score making it a 2-1 game. Hopefully Post 186 savored the moment because they would lose the lead in the bottom of the fifth and never get close to gaining it back. Post 201 exploded in the bottom of the fifth scoring six runs. Stuart Brown led off the inning and looked to have a sure double to center field, but Smigo made a great leaping catch on the warning track to rob him of extra bases. Collin Lawless picked him up by singling to right field, then stealing second and Nicky Mailo reached after he was hit by a pitch. Stibel Aleman more than made up for his error, by driving a double into the left center gap scoring Lawless and advancing Mai-

lo to third. Vinnie Pasquantino grounded out, but Mailo came in to score giving Post 201 a 3-2 lead. Austin Anderson kept the rally going with an RBI single down the third base line. Paul Wood singled and Kelvin Marte drew a walk to load the bases. Post 201 got some help from the defense to score their fifth run. Mac Caples hit a grounder to shortstop Tanner Fuller, but he bobbled it allowing Anderson and reloading the bases. Brown made Post 186 pay for the mistake driving a double to left field to add two more runs. By the end of the inning, the damage had been done and Post 201 had a 7-2 lead. White continued to impress on the mound posting another zero in the top of the sixth. Post 201 added two more in the bottom of the inning to make it a 9-2 lead.

2013 LABOR DAY PARADE Monday, September 2nd

Nicky Mailo led off with a walk. Pinch hitter Luke Rodgers was hit by a pitch and he a Mailo executed a perfect double steal to reach second and third. Anderson then drove in Mailo with a single up the middle and Rodgers advanced to third, then scored on a balk. White wouldn’t have mercy on Post 186’s hitters and posted another scoreless frame in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Mac Caples led off with a walk then scored on a towering homer to right field by Brown making it an 112 game, just one run from the mercy rule. Post 201 couldn’t add another in the inning, however, so the blowout continued. With the big lead, Coach Bryan Hannum decided to give White the rest of the night off and turned to Cody Mann in the top of the eighth. He was equally impressive in his one inning of work, especially considering it was just his second pitching appearance of the year. He showed good command of his pitches and quickly got a pop out, fly out and a strike out. Brown continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the eighth and put the final dagger into Post 186 with a “walkoff double. I put that in quotes because it wasn’t the true game winning run, but it did deliver a 10-run lead which entails the end of the game after five innings. Coach Bryan Hannum was more than happy with his team’s performance. “Tonight was great, he said. “After a real slow start to the season we are really coming together as a team and it’s been a lot of fun. He was especially pleased with Justin White’s performance. “Justin White was unbelievable tonight. To go seven innings and only give up a couple hits and one walk is awesome. He feels that this is one of the best teams Post 201 has fielded in a long time and is excited to see what they can do the rest of the way. “The team is really clicking and there’s no reason we can’t make a run in the playoffs for the first time in a while, he said.

“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity, said Jenkins. “I’ve had a lot of support from the parents and families and so far it’s been an awesome environment to be involved with. Jenkins comes to Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot from Essex High School, a Group A school that finished as Division 2 state runnerup last season. He was the head coach at Essex in 2010 and pulled double duty as offensive and defensive coordinator in 2012. Last season, he called plays for the indomitable Trojans’ quarterback Domenik Broaddus, who went on to enjoy one of the most prolific passing seasons in the history of the VHSL. Broaddus threw for 53 touchdowns, breaking a mark of 48 set by Dinwiddie’s Adam Morgan in 2008. Since graduating from Bridgewater, Jenkins has played the part of the journeyman, travelling the country – and the world – to pursue his dream of playing professional football. While student teaching at Randolph-Macon College, he landed his first coaching gig with the Yellow Jackets as a running backs coach. He then relocated to Lubbock, Tex., where he played quarterback for an indoor league team for several years before returning to Virginia to join the staff at Caroline High. After assuming the role of assistant coach with the Cavaliers, Jenkins continued his indoor career with a number of teams - including the Richmond Bandits, the Richmond Raiders and the Baltimore Blackbirds. He even spent some time on the European gridiron. “It was a pretty sporadic five or six years there when I first started

teaching, said Jenkins. But now that he is settled down – married, with a kid, as it were – Jenkins is ready to dig in his heels at BSH and start working toward continuing the long string of success the program has celebrated over the last decade. “Being a quarterback, I feel like I’m pretty offensive-minded, said Jenkins. “We ran the spread at Essex, and I really liked that, so I’m really interested to see what we’re working with here at Blessed Sacrament. Jenkins may have never even gotten the chance to apply for the head coaching position had his wife not made an off-hand remark while interviewing for a job as an English teacher at BSH. “My wife was actually interviewing for a teaching position, said Jenkins. “And the interviewer jokingly asked her if she was a football coach. She laughed and said ‘No, but my husband is.’ I ended up getting called for an interview, and the rest is history. Jenkins said he has been impressed the amount of support and positivity he has received from the BSH community – a sentiment that sounds quite similar to one murmured by Fritts after announcing his departure from the school a little over a month ago. “It’s been pretty unreal coming from what I’m used to, said Jenkins. “The parents are willing to step in and do everything they can to help. I’ve never been in a situation where team moms are coming up to me and talking about what dinners they are going to cook for the kids when the season is still a month and a half away. “It’s been outstanding, added Jenkins.

to-do list, do not fret. There are less costly options out there that don’t threaten severe bodily harm. One of these options involves red fruit. The Tomato Royale, like the GBR, takes place at Virginia Motorsports Park but – unlike the GBR – does not pose the risk of being trampled by an animal with enough

power in its hind legs to shatter a shin bone. Worst case scenario, you may get a splash of tomato juice in your eye. That’s no biggie compared to a puncture wound, and seems like a small price to pay for getting a chance to pelt strangers with soft fruit. If you happened to do that in the village of Powhatan in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon, it’d be called a

“crime, or whatever, and you would quickly be escorted to the nearest police station. But, if you do it at an officially sanctioned event, at a place where everyone is committing tomato assault, it’s hailed as harmless recreation. But I digress. If you take nothing else from this column, let it be that there are plenty of options out there if you are

looking to get involved in some positive summertime activities. If you feel the need to risk life and limb, I suggest the GBR. I’m strongly considering signing up for it myself. But if you’re looking for something a bit less abrasive, try a 5 or 10K (or 7.4K, if you can find one) on for size. You will feel a great sense of accomplishment afterward.

and “canter are types of horse gaits ascending in order from slowest to fastest. The walk usually averages four miles per hour, the trot eight miles per hour, and the canter 10-17 miles per hour. During competitions, riders are instructed over the intercom when to switch between gaits. Perhaps counter intuitively, riders are not allowed to enter personal horses into IHSA competition. Instead, they are forced to choose from a group of steeds provided by the host site. For example, when Dalton competed in Regionals at the University of Virginia this past spring, she was barred from saddling up on her own horse, who she has owned since the age of ten. While this may seem bizarre and perhaps even unfair at first glance, there is a meaning behind the madness. “The idea behind it is if you’re a good rider, you should be able to control any horse – no matter if you’re familiar

with them or not, Dalton pointed out. Indeed, and Dalton has proved time and time again that she is up to the challenge of controlling any horse that is put in front of her, however rowdy. She placed high enough in Regionals (UVa) and Zones (St. Andrew’s University) to advance to Nationals (Harrisburg) and the rest, as they say, is history. “The most fulfilling moment, as far recognition goes, was winning the reserve championship at the Nationals, said Dalton. Placing highly at a national collegiate competition is certainly nothing to balk at. It’s something that few riders will ever accomplish, no matter how many hours they spend training in the ring. But Dalton claims the most rewarding accomplishment of her equestrian career thus far wasn’t winning a high-level competition or qualifying for any particular event. Instead, it has been raising Daily, a horse that she has proudly called her own

for the past 11 years. “My mom and I bought him when he was three years old and I was ten, said Dalton. “I got him when he was barely broke and through the years showed him up to the Class-A levels. “Daily has won a lot of classes and has taken care of me in and out of the show ring for many years, added Dalton. Daily might be the horse nestled closest to Dalton’s heart, but she is also quick to point out several other steeds who have done her kindly through the years. “I owe a lot to Butter and Dusty, said Dalton. “They were two horses that helped me learned to ride when I was young. It’s the personal moments between horse and rider that mean the most to Dalton. And while she has experienced an uncommon amount of success and fanfare in front of packed crowds at competitions up and down the east coast, the most important thing will always be about that special connection she

Contact your local sales representative to reserve your space! 804-746-1235 OR 804-598-4305

has with her horses. “The most fulfilling moments are the small ones with horses, said Dalton. “The first show experience, the first canter stride, the first time having to trust a half-ton animal to not throw you off. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.
