Courthouse Village ceremony brings all ages together to honor veterans By Ben Orcutt News Editor
Before last week’s Veterans Day ceremony got underway at the Powhatan County Courthouse green, 93year-old World War II veteran Angelo “Chubby” Meluso serenaded 1-year-old Sabrina Quinn with his harmonica. There was Meluso, proudly wearing his American Legion Post 201
Powhatan, Va. hat, leaning over Sabrina’s stroller and playing a song for her. “Well, I always play for the youngsters,” Meluso said. Last week’s ceremony was one of many Meluso has attended since his days during WWII when he was assigned to a tractor unit that traveled to North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. For little Sabrina, it was her first
Veterans Day ceremony and one that her mother, Jaime Quinn, will remind her of for years to come. Quinn, 36, was asked by Billy H. Kornegay, past commander of Post 201, to sing the National Anthem at the ceremony and she also sang God Bless America. Powhatan High School celebrates veterans’ service By Ben Orcutt News Editor
Retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Michele S. Jones told those gathered at last week’s Veterans Day ceremony at Powhatan High School that you have to have good bones to be successful in life. Jones was the keynote speaker for the program put on by members of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC)
at Powhatan High School. The title of the program was “Fallen But Not Forgotten.” With an all-volunteer military, U.S. servicemen and women “serve because we want to, not because we have to,” Jones said. “There’s not a day I regret serving and I served for 25 years,” she added. Prior to her retirement in 2007, Jones was the see Service page 3A

Gresham gains GOP clerk nomination By Ben Orcutt News Editor
Tim Gresham will carry the banner of the Powhatan Republican Committee in the Feb. 4 special election for Clerk of the Circuit Court of Powhatan County. Gresham, who is chairman of the local GOP, was nominated by accla-
mation after it was announced that his challenger, Teresa Dobbins, withdrew her request to be considered for the party’s nomination. “I’m humbled by the number of friends and Gresham neighbors that are here tonight,” Gresham said to an overflow
crowd at the Powhatan Rescue Squad. Members of Gresham’s campaign offered those arriving for the mass meeting hot dogs and red stickers with his name on them. If elected to fill the unexpired term of William E. Maxey Jr., who retired see Nomination page 5A
A Powhatan County man died at the scene of a crash last week after the vehicle he was driving went off the right side of Huguenot Trail near Woolridge Road and struck a tree. The man was identified as Ledge A. Schmidhammer, 58, of the 3000 block of French Hill Road, according to Sgt. Thomas J. Molnar of the Virginia State Police. Trooper Otis Jackson, who worked the incident, said the call came in about 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 12 for a single-vehicle crash near the westbound lane of Huguenot Trail (Va. 711), about a tenth of a mile west of Woolridge Road (Va. 721). Schmidhammer was the only occupant of the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, Jackson said, adding that Schmidhammer was wearing a lap belt when the crash occurred. “He went off the right side of the road and struck a pretty large oak tree,” Jackson said. “My estimate of the speed when he struck the tree would be about 75 miles per hour. He was pretty mangled in the car and [rescue personnel] had to cut the top off, but when I arrived, they told me he was DOA. “Again, I would say speed would be a factor in it,” Jackson said. “As far as alcohol, that’s undetermined.” Further determination as to the cause of the crash will be based on the medical examiner’s report and a toxicology report, Jackson said. The speed limit on the section of Huguenot Trail where Schmidhammer crashed is 35 mph, Jackson said. The pavement was level and dry, “but it was in the S curves,” Jackson said. “He had passed a few vehicles in the no-passing zone and they witnessed the actual accident,” Jackson said. Schmidhammer’s next of kin were notified of the fatal crash, Jackson said. Traffic was detoured and Huguenot Trail was closed until approximately 8:40 p.m., Molnar said. The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance. Contact Ben Orcutt at borcutt@ powhatantoday.com or at (804) 5984304, ext. 19 or (804) 363-1577.
Correction In a story published in the Oct. 30, 2013, edition of Powhatan Today on the success of the 2013 Festival of the Grape, Tina E. Bustos, executive director of the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce, said she should have said that Powhatan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert E. Beasley Jr. shared with the Chamber’s security team that “the Festival Committee had the option to disallow weapons because we were hosting the event.”

POWR to host open house Contributed Report POWR (Powhatan Right), a leading conservative group in Powhatan, is excited to host an open house on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Powhatan Library. Founded in 2008, POWR is a nonprofit group in Powhatan working to support and protect the values of conservatism in the community through education, fellowship and community service. With more than 50 percent of the group’s time spent in non-political activities, POWR is considered a very service- oriented group with a focus on honoring and caring for the local veterans. “We are excited to showcase the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our POWR members over the years, said Debbie Jones, cofounder of POWR. “ We invite the community to come and join us for fellowship and refreshment and to learn more about what we do, what is forthcoming in 2014, and how they can get involved. We welcome all levels of participation and support. The open house kicks off a busy holiday season of activities for POWR. On Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, POWR will host its annual World War II veterans’ breakfast. Veterans and their families are invited to a celebratory event where they are fed home-cooked meals and enjoy the opportunity to engage with other veterans and their families. It has been widely attended and successful. POWR is always looking for volunteers and donations from those who wish to give back to such a cherished group in the community. “I can honestly say that getting to know these World War II veterans and their families has been life-changing, said Jones. “They are extraordinary people who truly exemplify the character and values of the greatest generation ever. They mean a great deal to us and honoring their service will continue to be one of our primary projects over the long term. In addition to the breakfast, every Christmas POWR collects and purchases items for the veterans and their spouses as part of their Christmas Gift Bags effort. In the past, veterans have received such items as bathrobes and slippers to homemade goodies to special Christmas cards from local school children. POWR is accepting donations now. Donations and Christmas cards may be sent to POWR at P.O. BOX 1193, Powhatan Va., 23139. For more information about POWR and the outreach opportunities they have available, call Debbie M. Jones at (804) 514-6803 or email powr08@ gmail.com

Winter Homecoming Dec. 7 to benefit St. Jude hospital By Ben Orcutt News Editor
Michael McDaniel, owner of Southside Arts Music & Theatre in Powhatan County, is sponsoring Winter Homecoming – an event to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital showcasing local performers. The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 7 in the cafeteria at Flat Rock Elementary School. “My main motivation in life is I’ve always liked working with kids,â€? McDaniel said during a recent interview. “All the families that go to St. Jude’s never have to pay a dime for their [children’s] care. I love that charity.â€? McDaniel has worked with St. Jude on other projects, but this is the first one that he is sponsoring, along with his girlfriend, Mandi Glidewell, who owns tu left feet Performing Arts, also in Powhatan. “St. Jude’s is actually one of the topranked charities in America because almost 100 percent of the funds raised go straight to the kids,â€? McDaniel said. “They are so thankful for the treatment that they’re getting and people who help raise money for them.â€? In addition to his music students and himself, other performers at the Dec. 7 event will include Ariel Pierson and Tracey Roberts, who teaches with McDaniel and performs with the Richmond Philharmonic Symphony. “Our main headliner is the Rythmasters with Coby Batty because they brought Coby in as a vocalist for this event,â€? McDaniel said. “They’re a professional jazz group. They play all over the place. They do a lot of jazz and Bebop jazz and kind of like the stuff you would have heard in the early 1920s, with some modern stuff too. So I mean they’re a really great group‌.[and] we kind of have a wide variety of music everywhere – everything from jazz, contemporary to classical.â€? Ballroom dancers will put on a demonstration performance, McDaniel said, and there also will be a DVD pre-

McDaniel said he is in the process of working with a vendor who would make gourmet cupcakes. The semi-formal event is alcoholfree, McDaniel said. As patrons arrive, Alan Dodd of A Priceless Moment Photography will be taking photos for $5, with $4 of each photo sold donated to St. Jude, McDaniel said. His goal is that the event will raise $5,000 for St. Jude, McDaniel said. “So it’s kind of like this awesome win-win where like everybody gets to get a really nice benefit out of it and it’s all just because it’s based on love basically, he said. highest Noncommissioned Officer of any woman in the Army. From July 2009 to December 2012, she was a member of the Senior Executive Service after being appointed by the Obama Administration. Today, the single mother of four adopted daughters is the president and CEO of The Bones Theory Group LLC and has been a motivational speaker for national groups across the country. When she first went to the podium on the PHS auditorium stage, she told the audience that she was not going to remain there for the duration of her talk and she was true to her word.
Jones worked the crowd, emphasizing that those who put on a military uniform do so for, “God, country and family,” to which she received at least one “Amen” from a member of the audience. Then came the “Bones Theory,” which serves as the credo for her life, Jones said. The first bone, she said, is the backbone. It takes a backbone to stand up and have the courage to be yourself, Jones said. The next bone she spoke about was the wishbone. “If you don’t think it can happen, it will not happen,” Jones said. She then turned to the funny bone and drew laughter when she talked
about people who she said are “haters.” “Haters drink Haterade every day,” Jones said. “You laugh your way to success,” she said. “Your sweetest revenge is your success.” The last bone in the Bone Theory, Jones said, is the tailbone. “Absolutely nothing happens if you don’t get off your tailbone and make it happen,” she said. In her closing remarks, Jones said it’s important to remember veterans every day and also important that whether you’re in the military or not, to serve someone in some way. She then produced a pink wand, gave it a wave and said, “Wishes do
come true.” A standing ovation ensued. Members of the JROTC who formed words to Josh Groban’s song, “War At Home,” also received a standing ovation. A video presentation showing servicemen and women surprising loved ones with their unexpected return home was heartwarming and was juxtaposed against scenes of family members and comrades of fallen soldiers who mourned the loss of those they held dear. The JROTC program resonated with PHS students. “I thought it was really good,” said 15-yearold sophomore Sydney Green. “It was really
tear-jerking at some points and it just really made me be thankful for all our veterans and our military and people who serve. I really enjoyed it.” Fellow sophomore Chris Bethea, 16, was likeminded. “I thought it was beautiful,” he said. “It actually made me think twice about the veterans and really support them…It was nice. I really liked it.” JROTC Cadet Command Sergeant Steele Oliver, a junior, was in charge of the program. “I’ve been working on this since August,” he said. “I think it went extremely well. We came a very, very long way from the very beginning – put a lot of hard work and
hours into it.” A Navy veteran of the Korean War, 78-year-old Leroy Chavez of Jacksonville, Fla., enjoyed the program from the front row and was accompanied by his daughter, Lisa Langley and her husband, Rob, of Powhatan. “I really enjoyed it,” Chavez said. “My grandson was in it.” Chavez was referring to 15-year-old sophomore Carter Langley, who is in his second year as a member of the JROTC. “I honestly enjoyed the veterans’ responses to our program,” Carter said. on before, you are doomed to repeat your past and we can never move into an age of peace if we don’t take the time to remember all the sacrifices that have been made to win the freedoms that we enjoy.” Despite not having a military background, she was raised to hold veterans in high regard, Quinn said. “It’s always been instilled that the veterans and our military support are very important for the protections that we are afforded and if it weren’t for those brave men and women going out and doing the job that not all of us are willing to do we wouldn’t have those freedoms that we have today,” she said. A U.S. Army veteran,
Post 201 Commander Creed Taylor said moments like the one that Meluso shared with Sabrina help to sow the fabric of American patriotism. “Now she’ll grow up to do the same thing: keep the generation looking to the veterans and give them the respect for what they deserve,” Taylor said. Luella Banton, 89, of Powhatan, sat on the front row for last week’s Veterans Day ceremony, marking the third such event of its kind that she attended in four days. Banton served as a nurse in the Women’s Army Corps during WWII treating soldiers who had been in action in the South Pacific theater. “Oh I wouldn’t give it
up for anything in the world,” Banton said of attending Veterans Day ceremonies. “I come here every year to this program.” The 50 or so people who attended last week’s ceremony were treated to a sunny day and mild temperatures, which made Veterans Day even more special, Banton said. “Oh I feel so proud,” she said. “I do. I feel extremely happy that I was able to help out and be part of what was going on at the time.” Col. James O. Tubbs, USAF (Ret.), was the keynote speaker for last week’s event. Tubbs, 55, said he spent 28 years in the Air Force on active duty, which was preceded by four years at the U.S.
Air Force Academy. Tubbs and his wife Sharon now make Powhatan their home and Tubbs teaches and coaches at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School. “It is a great honor for me to be here today to celebrate Veterans Day with all of you,” Tubbs said during his opening remarks. “When I think back on the tremendous sacrifices that have been made by generations of America’s military veterans, I am humbled that I might be considered one of them. I truly stand on the shoulders of giants.” The Navy, Tubbs said, is correct when it says as part of its public affairs campaign that, “All our veterans – past, present
and future – are a global force for peace.” Tubbs went on to say that every man and woman who has worn a U.S. military uniform “took a solemn oath…to ‘Support and Defend the Constitution of the United States Against All Enemies.’” Continuing, Tubbs said that the oath “is not made to a person, such as a king or a general or even to the President…It is an oath to support the ideals established by our founding fathers in the Constitution - the basic freedoms that we all recognize as quintessentially American.” Contact Ben Orcutt at borcutt@powhatantoday. com or at (804) 5984305, ext. 19, or (804) 363-1577.

Nomination: Gresham, former school board chairman, has lived in Powhatan for 18 years Continued from page 1A
as Circuit Court Clerk in September after six years into his seventh eightyear term, Gresham said his goal would be to put together a team, train them and equip them with the technology needed to do their jobs. Gresham, 55, is a former chairman of the Powhatan County School Board and serves as the president and CEO for Chesterfield-based Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic, a nonprofit that serves 400,000 children in Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland. He has lived in Powhatan for 18 years. Asked why he decided to seek the GOP nomination and run for Clerk of the Circuit Court, Gresham said, “I think it was after I went out and talked to other clerks and really realized that I could make a difference in Powhatan County. That’s what really kind of pushed me
over the edge.” Dobbins said she remained outside of the rescue squad building with her supporters and never went inside during the mass meeting. “Well basically we discussed our options,” she said. “We had probably 100, a little bit more [people] on the outside. We had some that were still inside. We just didn’t want to take the chance of losing to Mr. Gresham because my supporters do not want to throw their backing behind him. We just felt it would be a disservice to the county if I lost and I’m the only candidate with any experience [as a court clerk]. I have nineplus years. We felt it was in the best interests of my campaign and the citizens of Powhatan County that I withdrew, because [I did not] have the Republican backing and [run] on behalf of all of the citizens of Powhatan County.”
Dobbins, 48, has worked for two months as a principal clerk in the Chesterfield County Circuit Court – Judges Chambers. Prior to that, she worked for six years as a deputy Dobbins Circuit Court clerk in Powhatan and prior to that, three years as a deputy clerk in Powhatan County General District Court. Although she signed a pledge when she filed to run indicating that she would support whoever the Republican nominee was, Dobbins said that by withdrawing her request to be considered for the Republican nomination, she was not in violation of the pledge. “I have notified the Registrar today [Nov. 15] that I intend to run as an independent and I have
filed as such,” she said. Although she is running as an Independent, Dobbins said she still considers herself as a moderate Republican.
Dobbins has lived in Powhatan County since 1979. “I’ve always had enough sense to vote for the person and not the
party,” she said. Contact Ben Orcutt at borcutt@powhatantoday. com or at (804) 5984305, ext. 19 or at (804) 317-3280.

O B A M AC A R E
Start all over again By Ben Orcutt News Editor
Two thoughts come to mind when pondering the problems plaguing the Affordable Care Act or what has come to be known as “ObamaCare.” The first is a famous quote by Sir Walter Scott, the Scottish historian, novelist and poet who said, “Oh what a tangled web we weave, When we first practice to deceive.” By now, most Powhatan County residents can recite President Obama’s oft-repeated refrain regarding ObamaCare: “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan -- period.” The President also made a similar reference to your primary health care physician: If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. However, millions of Americans have discovered over the past two months that both of those statements are not true. Due to the requirements written into the ACA after it was passed, many insurance companies sent cancellation letters to consumers saying that if their current plans did not include the required coverage, they would be cancelled. Also based on requirements in the ACA, many physicians have opted out of participation, so it is quite likely that you may not be able to keep your doctor. The premise on which ObamaCare was based was a noble one: Formulate an affordable plan that would provide quality health care to all Americans, especially those who lacked coverage due to the inability to pay for it. Everything sounded good. If you liked your plan, you could keep it. If you couldn’t afford coverage, it would now become affordable. If you wanted to change your plan and choose a plan offered by the state or federal health care exchanges, it would be better and cheaper. But, in the weeks following the rollout of ObamaCare, what was promised has not been delivered. While the politics surrounding the ACA began as partisan, with only Democrats supporting the legislation, it has now become bipartisan if for only political reasons as Democrats face re-election in 2014. The time for stop-gap measures, such as delaying enforcement of the bill or allowing insurance companies to offer plans that had been cancelled, at least for a year, are not the solution. President Obama would gain a lot of stature with the American public if he were to repeat the second thought that comes to mind when regarding the ACA. It’s a lyric from Tyrone Davis’ hit song, “Can I Change My Mind,” which is, “I would like to start all

On the Move Government meetings may transition to Village Building By Ben Orcutt News Editor
As part of their Nov. 18 agenda, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors were set to approve a resolution to move government meetings beginning in January from Powhatan High School to the Village Building. “The only meetings being moved to the Village Building are the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and School Board meetings and workshops,” County Administrator Pat Weiler said. The Village Building is located at 3910 Old Buckingham Road in what is known as the Courthouse Village area. “We are asking the Board of Supervisors to do this for the calendar year 2014,” Weiler said. “Staff is recom-

Weiler said. “Based on the number of attendees at the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and School Board meetings, the parking at the Village Building is adequate,” Weiler said. “The county has an agreement with the [adjacent] church to use their parking lot for overflow parking. “Once the Board of Supervisors adopts its meeting schedule for 2014, the dates and location will be posted to the County website [www.powhatanva. gov] on the ‘Board of Supervisors’ page. On that page we will have the address of the Village Building with directions.” Contact Ben Orcutt at borcutt@powhatantoday.com or at (804) 598-4305, ext. 19 or (804) 363-1577.

Foxhound preserves not pens Dear Editor: Foxhound training preserves are not pens but large animal preserves. Rural areas have changed, causing less numbers of large tracts of land and automobile traffic has increased. It is a pleasure to take your hunting dogs to a preserve for exercise or training and not worry about any of your dogs being stolen, hit by automobiles or bothering anyone. The dogs can be gathered up much quicker than on the outside, therefore allowing more time with family or serving your community. Animal fights don’t occur in fox preserves – only in the minds of animal rights groups. The mainstream media has let a small group of people mislead the public about the foxhound training preserves. It is most reassuring to hear about the many fundraising activities in the preserves for individuals with cancer, who have been in an accident or other good causes. Remember, we are talking about foxhound training preserves, not pens, as they contain many acres of land and they are regulated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Despite the physical differences between the sisters, and some philosophical ones as well (Nicole says she is more laid back, while Kelli is somewhat of a perfectionist), volleyball is a common bond that has brought the two talented sisters together time and again throughout their teenage years. “Most of the time our lives are consumed by volleyball,” admitted Nicole. “Whether it’s driving to practice or flying across the country for a tournament, we’re always on the go.” “We eat, sleep, and breathe volleyball,” Kelli agreed.

She stands at 6’1 and slams home her spikes with a powerful right hand. Based on the team photograph from this past year, she was the tallest player on the team, beating out fellow senior Cecilia Fleming by about an inch. Boys’ cross country team competes in first-ever state meet Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
The 2013 fall season at Powhatan High School has been a banner year for two of the less-mainstream sports in the athletic realm. In October, the golf team finished as state runner-ups for the first time in their history. Not to be outdone, the boys’ cross country a team competed in the state meet as team for the first time in its lengthy history on Friday, Nov. 15, at Great Meadow Park. It was a landmark moment for a program that has sent individual runners to the state level numerous times over the years. Having an entire team compete at that lofty of a level, however, is something that head coach Bucky Webb and assistant coach Paul Smartschan have never experienced. “It has been an absolute blast and an honor to coach all the talented runners that made up the Powhatan cross country team this year,” said Webb. “Working alongside coach Smartschan, the season has been nothing but fun as I’ve seen the team develop camaraderie, self-discipline, accomplish numerous personal victories, and form a true sense of family.” Those personal victories that Webb spoke off were equaled, perhaps even surpassed, by team-wide accomplishments. The appearance at the state meet at Great Meadow Park in The Plains came on the heels of successful showings in the regular season, the conference meet, and the regional meet. The boys’ and girls’ teams both finished the regular season 6-2, breezed through the conference tournament, then finished strongly at the regional meet. The boys placed fifth out of 16 teams in the region, while the girls finished seventh. Though only the boys’ team qualified for the state meet as a group, they weren’t the only runners from Powhatan represented at the state-wide meet. Webb also sent three of his girls – Taylor Holt, Olivia Chadwick, and August Noble (a freshman) – out to The Plains to compete against some of the swiftest scurriers in the Commonwealth. All three ladies finished in the top 100, with Holt’s 30th-place finish being the most notable. “Having three girls and seven boys finish in the top 100 in the state was a huge accomplishment for our team,” he said. “I think this year was just the start of a bright and competitive future

for Powhatan XC.” One of the year’s more heartwarming stories was a lesson, in miniature, on thoughtfulness and altruism. After the boys’ team qualified for the state tournament, they were faced with a very difficult selection process: there were a total of 26 runners on the roster, yet only seven runners would be allowed to compete at the meet. The first six spots were relatively easy to fill, as past performance practically made the decision on its own. But the seventh spot turned out to
ships and unselfish unity they had this year,” said Webb. Sylvia made the most out of his last high school-level competition. He finished with a personal best time of 18:52, good enough to place 98th. Smartschan expressed his satisfaction at Sylvia’s success, as well as the performances of the other members of both the girls’ and boys’ teams. “The keys to success this year were leadership and toughness at every practice and meet,” said Smartschan. “With a large team like we had, the potential for some runners to excel beyond others was there. Yet every meet was filled with different teammates achieving personal records and beating their competitors.” “We tried to stress unity and heart this season, and that’s exactly what they had,” he continued. “The atmosphere was always positive and fun, yet still extremely dedicated and competitive.” “It was like a big, friendly, tough family,” he added.

Sisters: Both Kelli and Nicole Nee said they’re happy to be able to play volleyball together Continued from page 1B
The Nee sisters began playing the sport in 2010. Kelli was a sixth grader and Nicole was a freshman at Powhatan High School. According to Kelli, a coach at PHS spotted Nicole’s potential (and her highly advantageous height) and invited her to try out for the high school team. Nicole took to the sport immediately, and Kelli - wanting to follow in her big sister’s footsteps – joined the middle school team shortly thereafter. Their on-court paths converged in the fall,
when Kelli enrolled at Powhatan High School and immediately began competing on the varsity squad under coach Erin Woodson. Being the sister of an established varsity volleyball player, Kelli was already a brightly glowing blip on coach Woodson’s radar. But it quickly became apparent that Kelli wasn’t going to ride on the coattails of a recognizable last name. She instantly secured a spot in the starting lineup, exceeding everyone’s expectations by leading the team in aces (54) and receiving first team AllConference honors, the
only PHS player given that distinction. “I feel extremely blessed to be named first team all-conference,” said Kelli. “I was really surprised to recieve the honor as a freshman.” Like her younger sister, Nicole enjoyed a highly successful season on the hardwood. She led the team in kills (147) and blocks (56.5), and helped the Indians advance to the conference tournament where they squared off against perennial volleyball powerhouse Grafton High School. It wasn’t the first time in 2013 that the Indians

had squared off against the mighty Clippers. Back on Aug. 21, the visitors from York County came to the PHS gym for a scrimmage and promptly swept the Indians in five consecutive sets. With the ghost of that smackdown still lingering in Powhatan’s collective memory, the Indians put forth a valiant effort, forcing the Clippers to play a full five sets before ultimately succumbing to their competitors. The match (almost) literally could not have been any closer: all but one of the five sets was decided by two points, including the final set. It was a gutsy and admirable performance, one that almost had the feel of a victory given the fact that Powhatan took one of the most feared volleyball programs in the state to the brink of elimination. “Defeat is the worst feeling,” said Kelli. “but knowing each girl fought until the end made it easier to cope with.” “It was bittersweet,” said Nicole. “I had never seen my team play with more heart and will than that game. We never gave up, and even though we lost I was satisfied because I knew we left everything on the court.” The loss was bitter-

sweet for another reason: it marked the last time that Kelli and Nicole would don the orange and black and compete side-by-side at the high school level. Nicole will be moving on to college next fall. Though she hasn’t decided on a school yet, she hopes to continue her volleyball career with a club or varsity team. Kelli, on the other hand, will look to build on the foundation of success she laid down at the varsity level this season. “It was such a privilege
to play the sport I love with my sister,” said Kelli. “I’m fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to share this season with her. My season wouldn’t have been the same without her.” Nicole echoed that sentiment. “Being able to play with Kelli this season was very special,” she said. “I won’t see her as much when I get to college so having that extra time with her really meant a lot.”

Chandler Emberlin (34), Cameron Holt (27) and James Taylor (1) revel in a moment of ecstasy seconds after capturing the VISAA Division IV state title. Emberlin, a senior, scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard run in the first overtime.
Knights committed a personal foul on the ensuing kickoff, and the Falcons marched into the end zone with Gonzales scoring from 1yard out with 0:00 on the clock. Flipkoski, a junior, took over for sophomore Jake Waldrop (out with a broken collarbone) in the eighth game. He was 3 for 6 for 22 yards and an interception in the first half but was 11 for 19 for 140 yards and the TD after the break. It was the Knights’ fifth consecutive state championship, the last four coming in Division IV. BSH, which finished 11-1, has beaten Fuqua (6-6) nine times in a row since the last loss in 2007. “It’s been amazing. I’ve been here since sophomore year, and I have not made a better bond with any of my friends than these guys right here. I love them to death. I go to battle with them every day. I just can’t wait to see some of them play next year. It’s been a heck of a run,” Taylor said. Driskell started the year as an assistant but became head coach four games ago. “That’s one of the craziest, best football games I’ve ever been a part of,” said Driskell, who is one of the leading passers in Bridgewater College history and was a teammate of Fuqua coach Ben Manis. “I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of

caught passes of 14 and 36 yards to put the Knights on the Falcons’ 4-yard-line with 5 seconds left. A delay of the game penalty pushed BSH back to the 9 before C.J. Flipkoski threw to Taylor for the TD. Flipkoski found Taylor on the back line of the end zone for the twopoint conversion. Taylor initially was ruled out of the end zone, but the officials conferred and reversed the call. Fuqua got the ball first in overtime. A penalty and a sack by senior Ethan Johnson and junior Chandler Emberlin pushed the Falcons back to second-and-goal from the 31, and Taylor intercepted Antonio Gonzales’ pass. BSH was flagged for a delay penalty to start its overtime possession. Emberlin rushed for three yards, and on second-and-goal from the 12, he found what he called “a slight hole” opened by Sean Stanley and scored the gamewinning TD. “I feel like it was there for a reason,” Emberlin said of the Knights’ last ditch effort. “J.T. got the catch and then he got the twopoint conversion. It was just kind of heaven send.” Fuqua dominated the game on both sides of the ball. Gonzales, a junior, scored both Fuqua touchdowns in the second quarter. Thomas Parrish, a sophomore, was the workhorse, carrying the ball 32 times (seven more than BSH’s total number of carries) for 117 yards. Falcons DB Ahmad Booker intercepted a Flipkoski pass in the end zone to thwart a BSH drive in the second quarter. The Knights collected just 47 total yards in the first half. “They wanted to stop our running game. We’ve had a pretty successful running team all year,” BSH coach Hagan Driskell said. “They wanted us to throw the ball. We weren’t as successful throwing the ball as we’d like to be. Their offensive and defensive lines pushed us around all night long. We just kept on fighting.” Justin Cary, a senior, booted a 25-yard field goal with 2:59 left in the first half to cut Fuqua’s lead to 6-3, but the

For a brief moment at the beginning of the contest – after a 34-yard field goal by Wes Livermon put the Indians up 3-0 – Powhatan entertained the idea of an upset. But the Hurricanes quickly nipped that thought in the bud, reeling off 28 consecutive points on long, demoralizing scoring plays. The first touchdown came on a 66-yard run by Juany’e Patillo. Patillo, the game’s unofficial Most Valuable Player, ended the night with an astounding 225 yards on only 14 rushes. That’s
an average of 16-plus yards per carry. Another candidate for Most Valuable Player was Heritage’s Marcus Vanhook, a split end who scored the Hurricanes’ next three touchdowns. Each end zone visit came through the air from at least 25 yards out. His third venture across the goal line – a 32-yard reception from quarterback Jeremiah Boyd – gave the Hurricanes a 28-3 lead and officially put the game out of reach for Powhatan. To their credit, the Indians never stopped fighting, even when the out-
come of the game was essentially decided. They trailed 35-10 late in the third, but scored twice – once on a 16-yard run by DaQuan Berry, then again on a 5-yard reception by Elijiah Goode – to bring the score to a respectable mark of 35-23. That’s as close as they would get, however, as Timothy Holden-Bethea pounded out a 2-yard run to put the home team up 41-23. Those were the last points scored by either team. The rushing attack that has powered the Indians all season long was left spinning its wheels for most of the evening. The
Heritage defense was a fearsome, violent bunch, and they kept Logan Allen under the century mark for the second consecutive game. The loss eliminates Powhatan from postseason play. The win puts Heritage in somewhat unfamiliar territory. It’s the first time they’ve reached the second round of the VHSL playoffs since 2000, when they went 14-0 and captured a Group AAA, Division 5 state championship. They advanced to the postseason in 2007 and 2012, but lost in the first round each time.
