With its rich history, rural lifestyle with modern conveniences, hometown festivals, parks, wineries, brewery and the nicest citizens around, Powhatan County certainly has plenty to offer to everyone!

O

Our Three Hour Historical County Tour, 10 historical markers mixed with the century farms, historical churches and cemeteries, and the 20 properties on the National Register of Historic Places are all must-do visits for longtime residents and newcomers alike. Our numerous festivals throughout the year bring a special "hometown" element. We proudly host the Festival of the Grape every fall, which brings thousands of visitors from all over Virginia to our beautiful historic courthouse area, and invite you to enjoy our Chamber of Commerce’s summer-long outdoor concert series, The Village Vibe. Our calendar is filled with everything from parades to rodeos, batteau festivals to sports tournaments, horse shows to

Earth Day events, which are enjoyed by all ages. The Powhatan State Park, with hiking trails and views of the historic James River, is a beautiful new addition to our county and should be at the top of the list to visit. Our very own Fighting Creek Park is certainly a favorite for our residents. Miles of walking trails, a playground, soccer, baseball and softball fields and the longest Disc Golf course in Virginia, all nestled behind our state-of-the-art library make this a community gem. If all that isn't enough to keep you busy, we have beautiful vineyards, three golf courses, a brewery, several rustic wedding venues, Wildlife Management areas, wonderful lakes, numerous boat launches on the James River and campgrounds to explore as well. Whether old or young, resident or visitor, we welcome everyone and invite you to our favorite place to escape and enjoy life in Powhatan County! Ted Voorhees County administrator Powhatan County

The story of the first Christmas Mother By Laura McFarland OWHATAN – Fifty years ago, Helen Mason said yes to being the first Powhatan County Christmas Mother before she even knew what it would mean. The wife and mother of four was called one day in the fall of 1967 by Sadie Johnson, a friend but also director of the Department of Public Welfare (DPW), and asked if she would be the Christmas Mother. Mason agreed and then asked what that would involve. At that time, there were very few community services organizations in Powhatan like people see today, but it did have a number of home demonstration clubs, said Mason, who was a member of one of them. The house was built in 1820 by the same unknown contractor that built Morewood on Rocky Ford, Homestead just north of the Village and probably the front portion of the Courthouse Tavern. Bienvenue sits on an 18-acre property only a gentle stroll from the Historic Powhatan Courthouse and Village area, including several restaurants. The house is

Each yurt has a large wooden deck with patio tables, a picnic table and a fire-ring with cooking grate. Reservations are required. Parking for two vehicles is allowed. Those with additional vehicles must pay a daily parking fee and park in the overflow lot by the campground entrance. STATE PARK

By La Laura McFarland owhatan State Park has made big strides forward since it opened on July 6, 2013, and become an attractive addition to the Virginia State Park System. Located in the northwest corner of Powhatan County on the historic James River, the park offers a variety of activities for a day out with family and friends or an overnight stay at one of its facilities. as well as the addition of three yurts for people who want something a little less rustic than tent camping. Previously, the only option for overnight guests was a canoe-in campground along the scenic James River. The park has three cartop boat slides accessing the river as well as diverse wildlife habitat, from open fields to upland hardwood forests. Other amenities include multi-use trails, wildlife observation areas, picnic shelters and a playground. Park rangers also work hard year round to offer visitors a wealth of activities to experience all the park has

to offer, whether they are roasting marshmallows over a campfire, trying their hand at archery, exploring the parking using Geocaching or simply enjoying nature on a group hike.

Powhatan State Park offers many places to explore on a bike as well as on foot.

Visitors may book one of the 29 campgrounds. Several of the sites can only be reserved online while others are first come, first-served. Visit http://www.dcr.virginia. gov/state-parks/powhatan for details.

Exploring the park The park has about 8 miles of multi-use trails through various habitats including field edge, upland pine forest and mature hardwoods. The trails provide excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife. Some are only accessible on foot but a large percentage is multi-use. In 2017, the park became accessible to horse trailers, which means riders on horseback can now join cyclists on the multi-use trails.

On the open water The park has three canoe launches along the James River within the park boundaries. Having the launches spaced out offers visitors access to the river for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Renovations included regrassing the fairways and greens, ridding the layout of an overabundance of bunkers and strategically removing trees to get air moving, resulting in healthier turf. In addition to the course upgrades, the club formed incredible partnerships that have allowed it to take the

overall golf experience to another level. Here are the most notable: Champion Bermuda greens; Five sets of tees ranging from just over 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 yards from the tips; Ground game is prevalent, especially in front of and around the putting surfaces, where closely-mown areas mean players have a number of choices, including running the ball onto the green. Independence Golf Club was featured in the April, 2017 issue of PGA Magazine as one of six case studies of golf courses reacting to the changing golf landscape. The article

highlighted Independence hosting various family-friendly activities, community events and unique food offerings in addition to the golf experience.

C CHURCHES ES

Historical sto Society works to preserve Powhatan churches By Roslyn Ryan owhatan County is home to many historically significant structures, from French’s Tavern in Ballsville to Elmington, the Maidens Road home designed by famed architect Alexander Jackson Davis. But nestled in with the homes are a number of historic churches, including some that are no longer used as houses of worship and instead stand as stately reminders of Powhatan’s past. While some of these buildings have been lovingly and painstakingly restored—including the St. James Chapel on Old River Trail, built in 1882—others have been left to face time and the elements largely on their own. Fortunately for those who would like to see the past preserved for future genera-

tions, the Powhatan Historical Society has stepped in to lend a hand. According to Historical Society President John Rothert, the organization is currently working on behalf of several of the properties, including Grace Church on Rocky Ford Road. That building, once the heart of the village of Genito, features a cemetery with grave markers dating back to the 1850s. One of those markers belongs to Capt. William M. Skipwith, a Confederate soldier killed at Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861. In addition to Grace Church, the Historical Society is also bringing attention to Corinth Church on Judes Ferry Road, a weathered 19th century structure Rothert said is suffering from both its proximity to the road and its location in a blind curve. In 2014, the group began marshalling volunteers to help preserve what is left of the one-room building, which found an unlikely new use as a film set on at least one
