Board mulls budget before May 14 vote By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – County administrator Ted Voorhees recently updated the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors on the proposed fiscal year 2019 budget with adjustments made for the lower tax rate they voted to advertise. When Voorhees and county staff originally presented the fiscal year (FY) 2019 budget to the board on March 5, it was built based on keeping the tax rate the same at 88.5 cents. But after the board voted 3-2 in favor of advertising a lower tax rate of 88 cents at its meeting on April 9, county staff had to find $167,041 to cut from estimated

revenues to create a balanced budget based on that rate. Voorhees gave a budget update presentation at the board’s special meeting on Monday, April 30 before a public hearing was held to allow residents to give input on the budget. Most of the presentation covered ground Voorhees had already presented to the board previously about building the budget based on board policies and strategic priorities, proposed staffing changes, health insurance changes, and where the budget had seen increases and decreases in revenue and expenditure estimates. The total FY 2019 budget is now $82,117,580, which includes Powhatan County Public Schools’ budget but not the

transfers. Now, including schools, the county’s total budget has seen an increase of $1,604,657, or 2 percent, over the FY 2018 budget This budget total includes the $167,041 in revenue cuts staff is now recommending to the proposed budget after Larry Nordvig, who represents District 2, suggested a tax rate decrease be advertised and the motion was adopted. Since the county’s overall revenue will be reduced by the lower tax rate, Voorhees recommended proportionately decreasing the school transfer by $64,608 as part of the cut. To make up the difference on the rest of the cut, he suggested eliminating three positions that were proposed in the budget:

part-time receptionist position, $26,869; part-time sheriff’s office administrative position, $10,000, and a building inspection position, $65,564. The board of supervisors is scheduled to vote on the budget at its next meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 14. During the public hearing held about the budget, Mike Asip of Powhatan was the only person to speak. He expressed concern about lowering the tax rate to 88 cent. He said that as a taxpayer, he views “taxes not as an evil but as a collective investment in the community.” He said he has been happy to see the county invested in quality schools, public safety, capital investments in facilities and see BUDGET, pg. 6

POWHATAN – The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors wants to hold off on narrowing down what local road projects it will submit to possibly be selected for the SMART Scale program until it can have more input from Powhatan residents. During the board’s meeting on Monday, April 30, the supervisors discussed narrowing down eight possible road projects to the final four they would submit to try to vie for program funding.

POWHATAN – An Amelia man was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery last week in a trial that marked the final criminal proceeding regarding a 2016 fight that left a Powhatan man with a blade broken off in his brain. Jacob Moore, 23, of Amelia was convicted on Tuesday, May 1, in Powhatan County Circuit Court by a seven-person jury of the assault and battery of Norris Goode Jr., 23, of Powhatan. The jury, which had the option of sentencing Moore to up to 12 months in jail, a fine, or both, ultimately decided to sentence him to pay the maximum fine of $2,500 but serve no jail time. Authorities never recovered the handle of the knife. While the Powhatan County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office made Jesse Moore the major focus of criminal proceedings initially, he was found not guilty of felony aggravated malicious wounding during a bench trial held on March 15, 2017. During that case, Jacob Moore had cooperated with law enforcement and implicated his brother as the person who wielded the knife in the fight with Goode. Beef & Music Festival to offer night of entertainment

The 36th annual Beef & Music Festival will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on May 18 at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic Church.

Contributed Report

O

n Friday, May 18, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot will host the 36th Annual Beef & Music Festival on Barham-Sowers Field on the school grounds from 6 to 10 p.m. with live music by the KOS Band. The Beef & Music Festival is the most critical fundraiser for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School, as well as a great way to introduce the Greater Rich-

mond community to the spirit of BSH. Due to the fact that tuition only covers a portion of the true cost of educating our children and operating BSH each year, we count on the Beef & Music Festival to close the funding gap. Traditionally, this annual event draws a crowd of about 800 people from the Greater Richmond community to the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School campus to enjoy barbecue, great outdoor live music and a

chance at an amazing raffle grand prize of $5,000, which comes with each raffle ticket. This year, the school will feature the musical talents of the The KOS Band, sponsored by CapTech. Meals of pork and beef barbeque will be provided by Greenhow’s BBQ. There will be a live and a silent auction that include some amazing items, from a Maui vacation to NASCAR tickets! All this is possible because of the event’s many

sponsors, including this year's Gold Level sponsor, Richardson Harris Boatwright Insurance Agency Inc. Aside from the beef and the music, there will be a new exciting addition of Gail Mirabella & The Dynamo Dogs, as seen on the past season of The Bachelor. Gail Mirabella and The Dynamo Dogs perform all over the country with their entertaining dog variety act. The Dynamo Dogs are veteran performing dogs and they demonstrate everything from trick dog show routines to Frisbee dog acrobatics. There will also be bounce houses, the Sweet Frog frozen yogurt truck, face painting and other activities for the kids. Adults can try their hand at a corn hole tournament while they enjoy the music and beer and/or wine, sponsored by Watkins Nurseries Inc. Tickets are available on the school website, www.bshknights.org/ bmf-2018, or by coming to the main office of the school located at 2501 Academy Road in Powhatan. Tickets purchased online can be picked up at

“will call” on the day of the festival, mailed to you, or picked up at the school

during school hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m., MondayFriday).

took over the case against Jacob Moore, she made a motion in June 2017 to amend the charge against him from felony aggravated malicious wounding to misdemeanor assault and battery. During last week’s trial, following the guilty verdict and when the jury went back to consider sentencing, Goode left the courtroom and gave a jubilant shout outside. He later said he felt justice had been served and that for the first time since all of these events were set in motion just over two years ago, something went his way. He said he was thankful the jury did its job and found Jacob Moore guilty, and, while he wished they had also sentenced him to jail time, “we can’t win them all. And this is the only one that I have won, so I have to be grateful for this outcome.” “I am feeling kind of euphoric right now, kind of excited. The endorphins are shooting off. There is a little bit I feel like that is left on the table, but you can’t win everything,” he said. John A. Rockecharlie, Jacob Moore’s defense attorney, said he was disappointed because he and his client were hopeful the jury would see their point of view that “Jacob’s actions were reasonable and lawful that day but grateful to the jury that they didn’t put a

young man who has never been in trouble before in jail.” While Jacob Moore’s conviction marks the end of the criminal proceedings, the case is still not closed on the incident. On April 17, a civil suit was filed in circuit court against both Moore brothers and Reza Omarzai, who owns the property where the fight took place. The lawsuit seeks $4 million in damages from each of the brothers and $8 million in damages from Omarzai.

During Jacob Moore’s trial, both the defense and prosecution spent a great deal of time on the smallest of details involving how the timeline of events unfolded on April 17, 2016, where vehicles parked, and the exact location of everyone involved. A big factor in both of their arguments relied on intent versus perceived intent. Only three witnesses were called: Goode for the prosecution, Jacob Moore for the defense and Chase Dowdle for the prosecution’s rebuttle. All three were asked about the same timeline of events. Goode and Dowdle both testified they met at Goode’s house in Powhatan and planned to go fishing at the pond down the road, where Goode said he had been fishing for years. Goode, who had turned 21 a few days earlier, was drinking a beer. The same bottle of

thought he felt a kick in the head, which would later be revealed to be the stabbing. Both lawyers made a point of establishing that Jacob Moore never had a weapon in his hand, and at no point did Hoy’s questioning suggest he was the one who had cut or stabbed Goode. However, her questioning did suggest that Jacob Moore started the sequence of events when he got his “hot-headed brother” to go with him to check out the strangers possibly taking “his fish” since he had previously added fish to the pond. He also was the first one to make physical contact when he pushed Goode. Hoy repeatedly said that Jacob Moore never asked permission to stock the pond, didn’t own it or the property where it is located, and was never given permission to police who used the pond. The jury took about an hour in its decision to find Jacob Moore guilty. In the arguments regarding sentencing, Hoy said the jury had to consider two things: Moore set the events of that day in motion and he physically put his hands on Goode. Rockecharlie argued Moore had no criminal record and asked the jury not to punish Moore “for the sins of his brother.” In addition to the $2,500 fine the jury imposed, Jacob Moore has to pay for court costs and the cost of the jury, which comes out to about $3,800 total.

down to the pond. As Goode and Dowdle were driving away, they flagged them down. As all three men described what followed, the interaction did not start as a threatening confrontation but it also didn’t begin with a friendly greeting. The brothers got out of their truck and Goode, who was the passenger in Dowdle’s car, also got out. Jacob Moore spoke first, asking if the two men had caught any fish and who gave them permission to fish on the land.

JACOB MOORE

While the two men hadn’t caught anything, Goode and Dowdle both testified the Moores wouldn’t stop questioning their right to fish there and who had given them permission. Goode said he got permission from Reza Omarzai, the property owner, although he didn’t know his exact name. Earlier in the trial, a written testimony from Omarzai was entered into evidence saying he never gave Goode permission to fish the pond, but Goode strenuously argued that he did. How the situation escalated and led to the fight was a big focus of the questioning, with Jacob Moore claiming a combination of Goode’s demeanor and the fact he was holding a beer bottle as he stepped toward him made him seem threatening and he pushed him with both hands in self-defense. Meanwhile, his brother also pushed Goode back with one hand. Rockecharlie argued several times that Jacob Moore acted in self-defense because of Goode’s threatening demeanor. Goode maintained he merely pointed at the pond as he said he could fish anywhere he wanted and never made any threatening gestures with the beer bottle. After being pushed, Goode hit Dowdle’s car and then came back and charged Jacob Moore, knocking him to the ground. At some point in the tussle, Goode said he

beer would be referenced throughout the entire proceeding. The two men then went and fished at the pond down the road from Goode’s house that is owned by Omarzai. They said they didn’t catch anything and decided to go fish at another spot in Amelia. Jacob Moore was nearby at the house he and his mother had been renting for a few years when his girlfriend told him there were strangers at the pond. Jacob Moore got his brother, who was visiting that day, and they went

County seeks citizens’ opinions in upcoming survey Contributed Report The County of Powhatan is asking residents to participate in a specifically designed survey through National Citizen Survey over the next several months. The survey has been created to provide a baseline of how the county government is serving residents, to gauge perceptions of the county and to make comparisons with peer localities. The county contracted with National Research Center Inc. to participate in

The National Citizen Survey, an instrument that was developed with the assistance of the International City/County Management Association in 2001 to provide localities with a low-cost method to measure citizen opinion. The NCS was among the first scientific surveys developed to gather resident opinion on a range of community issues, and has been used in more than 350 jurisdictions across 46 states. The survey responses will primarily

be used to help improve staff performance, strengthen communications with community stakeholders, and identify clear priorities for use in setting goals and budgets. Additionally, a few specific questions have been added to help guide the board of supervisors in its decision making process for adopting the county’s Comprehensive Plan. During the months of May and June, 1,900 households will be randomly se-

lected and will receive invitations by mail to participate. All responses will be weighted and analyzed by the National Research Center with a final report being presented to the board of supervisors in the early fall. While only those who are randomly selected may participate in the survey, additional opportunities to provide input regarding the comprehensive plan will be provided through community meetings over the next several months.

PREVENTION Continued from pg. 1

The activity held on Friday, April 27 with the school’s 2- and 3-yearolds and preschoolers was a recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, said Wendy Lipscomb, director of early childhood at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (BSH). “The teachers read ageappropriate books about how we treat each other, like ‘Hands are Not for Hitting,’ ” she said. “The students decorated pinwheels and got to take them home. They also planted the blue and silver pinwheels, which are symbolic of Child Abuse Prevention Month.” Parents were invited to participate in the event, and several family members did attend and help their children decorate the multi-colored pinwheels they got to keep. At an agreed on time, all four early childhood classes headed to a tree near the side of the school facing Academy Road and planted their symbolic pinwheels in a circle around it. Lipscomb said the pinwheels would be a visual reminder of Child Abuse Prevention Month for people driving by on Academy Road who spotted them and the families picking up their children in the carpool lane. The event with the children was the final program funded for the school by a grant from Child Care Aware of Virginia, a community-based network of early care and education specialists whose purpose is to deliver services to families, child care professionals and communities to increase the accessibility, availability, and quality of child care in Virginia, said Kristi Carter, infant-

ChildSavers is a Richmond-based nonprofit that provides training and technical assistance to child care providers to help them improve the quality of their programs, she said. In this case, the organization provided the technical assistance paid for by Child Care Aware of Virginia’s grant. The $1,200 grant funded programs that have stretched over the last few months, Carter said. ChildSavers held a training with the early childhood teachers focused on preventing child abuse and neglect, she said. The school did a self-assessment and then ChildSavers provided coaching to the educators. Then it provided a literacy café event for the parents. “The outcome is to provide more awareness of child abuse and neglect so the teachers can be more proactive,” Carter

Impending graduation prompts reminiscing By Laura McFarland News Editor

W

hile I have never seen the movie “Aliens,” part of me feels like I did have my own close counter of the weird kind. Exactly 18 years ago this month I vividly remember going into the bedroom of my older sister Stefanie one afternoon and finding her asleep. Taking a nap was understandable at the time because she was about eight months pregnant. While Stefanie was asleep, my unborn future niece or nephew was highly active. To say it was disturbing to watch the baby move around in her tummy does not even begin to describe the unsettling nature of that moment. That month, May 2000, was already a special time because I was preparing to graduate from high school. But, to be honest, all things considered, I was actually more excited about the impending birth. Fast-forward about a month and my nephew Mason was born. I was in the room during the delivery and heard with surprise the doctor’s announcement that Stefanie had given birth to a beautiful baby boy. Everyone else there was equally surprised because two dif-

ferent doctors in two different states each performed an ultrasound and assured us the baby was a girl. I was blessed to see Mason much more in his first few years because I was still living in Texas at the time. I started college that fall but made sure to make the four-hour trip from Fort Worth to Houston on a regular basis to see my family and especially Mason. I remember how proud I was when I found in a store what was essentially a little purple dragon costume for him to wear. Keep in mind that the mascot of my alma mater, Texas Christian University, is the horned frog and in my eyes that was close enough. My family visited for homecoming weekend my freshman year, and, even though it was too warm and Mason was a little too big for it, my sister still stuffed his little sausage arms and legs into the dragon costume. I was bursting with pride and he wasn’t even mine. But just because he wasn’t mine didn’t mean I felt the need to curb the desire to talk about him incessantly. If you ask my best friend from college, she can fully attest that I talked about him entirely too much. In case you’re wondering, this trip down Memory Lane was prompted when I went to my mailbox last week and found a graduation party invitation. My little

Mason Man is scheduled to graduate from high school in a few weeks. On a side note, I know that age is a relative thing and that being 36 is not over the hill. But there is something about the reminder that someone you knew in the womb is graduating from high school that makes you do a double take and wonder where the has time gone. As the cool aunt who only gets to see him a few times a year, I know this moment is nowhere near as momentous for me as it is for Mason and his parents. Just as I am aware that there are families all over Powhatan County even now contemplating with mixed emotions that their own children will be graduating in a few weeks. For all of the parents out there wondering how 18 years passed by in a blink of an eye and your little boys and girls have become young men and women ready to start a new chapter of their lives – I feel for you. I won’t claim to know exactly how you are feeling as a parent, but I do understand how this impending moment can represent so many feelings: pride, love, anxiety, relief and oh so much more. Making a living in America has become almost as diverse and innovative as the independent group of entrepreneurs who come up with the various methods to make a buck in the new millennium. You can have your dog walked, buy a new car or find a reputable roofer all with the touch of a finger aimed at the appropriate app. Just about anything you can imagine you might desire or want is a click away, and there’s a universe of unique services out there just waiting for a customer. Some of them seem far-fetched, but in a new innovative world, who knows what the next million-dollar business is just around the corner. I suppose the first days of Facebook and Amazon were met with a fair amount of skepticism, and look how the future turned out for those companies. And who’s to say that a good idea in one person’s mind is not a viable business in the estimation of another more skeptical opinion. Nonetheless, I fear some seemingly innovative ideas and products are providing solutions for problems that don’t exist, and some inventors and innovative entrepreneurs have become enthralled with the journey and less interested in the destination. Americans regularly tune in to shows like Shark Tank to see the latest innovative ideas and the brave entrepreneurs who stake their life savings on the success of a dream. No doubt all of us like the idea of the little guy making it big with a simple idea that makes us all wonder “Why didn’t I think of that?” The last two entries in this infinite list of new services and businesses did not evoke that response from me, but, again, who I am to judge the validity a service that seems futile to me may provide to someone seeking that very assistance. I listened intently to a story about a woman who described her-

self as a professional cuddler. For $60 or so, a person can go to one of these snugglers’ homes, climb in bed and be caressed for 30 minutes. I know what you’re thinking. These folks are just finding a new variation in a profession that’s as old as mankind itself, but the cuddlers vehemently deny any sexual connection to what they do. Now, I’m not disputing the power of human touch to soothe and heal battered nerves, or the need of humans to experience the touch of fellow humans, but I’m not sure paying for it in half-hour sessions is a path to tranquility or well-being. One cuddler describes her services as a non-sexual positive touch, a description that some would define as an enigma. The lady on television said she made $85,000 last year hugging strangers. So somewhere out there exists a group of adults seeking a pajama party kind of closeness that most of us have abandoned. And all of this makes me feel guilty for wanting the fair share of a double bed with clearly defined areas for each occupant, most of the time. Thankfully, I’ve mostly outgrown the urge to utter well-mannered outrage at these kinds of stories, so I made no comment as the story ended. I could feel my children as they silently awaited what they thought was a predictable reaction to this type of story. I didn’t say a word. The next story finally began, an in-depth investigation on what could become the latest money making trend in the Midwest. An enterprising lady was describing her new venture, a new form of meditational exercise called Goat Yoga. I only watched for a few seconds as members of her class achieved downward dog with a goat standing precariously on their back. “Now, that’s something that could really catch on,” I said as I exited the room. Sometimes, you have to cross them up! 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-730-0476

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney to deliver address at Reynolds 45th Commencement

Westchester Farmers Market opens for the season

Contributed Report City of Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney will deliver the commencement speech at Reynolds Community College’s 45th Commencement, which will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, at the Virginia Commonwealth University Stuart C. Siegel Center, located at 1200 West Broad Street in Richmond. Stoney was sworn in as Richmond's 80th Mayor on Dec. 31, 2016, and is the youngest mayor elected to serve the city. After serving as a governor's fellow in then-Governor Mark Warner's office, he became the first African American Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the youngest member of Governor Terry McAuliffe's cabinet. As secretary, he led the largest, most public-facing office of the governor's

cabinet, and was the driving force behind transforming the process that restored civil and voting rights. Under his leadership, Virginia restored more rights than any other state in the country and more than the past seven administrations combined. Reynolds Community College is the youngest and third largest of 23 community colleges in Virginia. Reynolds operates three campuses serving residents in the City of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Louisa. Reynolds has one formal commencement ceremony each year after the spring semester for students completing certificate or Associate Degree curricula throughout the academic year. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Chris Gupton (11) bats during the Knights’ 9-8 win over Kenston Forest on May 2. Gupton was 1 for 1 with two walks and three runs scored in the win over the Kavaliers.

Gupton honored, Knights defeat Kavaliers By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was Senior Night for Chris Gupton, the lone senior on the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot baseball team and his teammates made him a promise before the game against Kenston Forest on May 2. “They promised me a win,” he said. His teammates delivered on their promise in the 9-8 win over the Kavaliers, with Gupton playing a large role as he scored three runs, including the even-

tual game-winning run. In the bottom of the first, Gupton got the Knights on the board first after he led the inning off with a single, stole second base, and then was knocked in on a single by Noa Hasty. Kenston Forest responded in the top of the second by scoring four runs, including a 2-RBI triple in the frame. But, much to coach James Poore’s delight, the Knights did not back down after seeing their lead evaporate into a threerun deficit.

“The kids fought back,” he said. “Today we showed how we can play the game. It was great to see them fight back.” In the bottom of the third, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot answered the Kavaliers’ breakout inning with one of its own. Gupton and Robbie Kurtz worked back-to-back one-out walks. Then, Tyler Hall brought both runners around with a double to make it 4-3. Hall scored after a double from Hasty

and Jack McMinn doubled home Hasty to make it 5-4. McMinn would score on a single from Kemper Roudabush to make it 6-4 Knights. After a quick one-two-three inning for both teams in the fourth, the Kavaliers tied the game in the fifth inning. Two doubles and an RBI single made it 6-6, but a key double play to end any further scoring kept the Kavaliers at bay. Another double play turned by the see KNIGHTS, pg. 2B

The Powhatan Indians baseball team faced a solid Jefferson District opponent on May 3 at Powhatan High School in the form of the Western Albemarle Warriors. The teams were tied after the top of the fourth, but the Indians were able to stay focused and steady and plated two more runs and shut down the Warriors offense in a 5-3 win. It is the ninth win in a row for the Indians, who are now 11-2 on the year. “It was a good win,” coach Gregg Conner said. “We played scrappy tonight. That’s how I like it. We were aggressive and took advantage of mistakes. We had

great pitching, too.” That scrappiness showed throughout the game as the Indians were able to take advantage of Western Albemarle miscues and stop the Warriors when they had built up some momentum. In the top of the third inning, Western Albemarle’s Devin Powell, Wyatt Hull and Brendan Campbell all reached base on singles. The bases were loaded with just one out, but Powhatan’s Tommy Preston was on the hill and he was able to snuff out the flame that the Warriors were trying to build with a strikeout of Garrett Payne and forced Derek Domecq into a groundsee INDIANS, pg. 3B

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Corrinne Anderson signed her commitment to Randolph College on May 2 at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, surrounded by her family and classmates. Anderson was named first-team All-VISAA and the VCC Player of the Year in girls basketball.

lessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Corrinne Anderson wanted to find the perfect spot to play college basketball. Anderson was able to find just that as she announced her intention to play at the next level at Randolph College. “It feels good,” she said at her signing. “I think that God had a plan for me and this was the right fit.” Anderson had a strong season for the Knights and averaged 16.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game this past season. She was named the Virginia Colonial Conference Player of the Year and was named first-team all-state. “I had no idea, I was so shocked,” she said of her postseason honors. “It was an

amazing feeling. I always wanted that, but I never thought that I would get there.” The Knights advanced to the VCC semifinals this last season and fell to Brunswick Academy. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state tournament and fell 43-40 in overtime to Veritas in the state quarterfinals on Feb. 27. Anderson played a large role in those playoff games, as she scored 23 points in the Knights’ opening round playoff win in the conference tournament and followed that up with jumpstarting an 11-2 run that gave the Knights an early edge against Veritas, and the shot that tied the game with 48 seconds remaining. When it came to choosing Randolph, Anderson said that it was the people who drew her most to the school. “Their coaches came to multiple

games of mine and were texting me and asking how I was doing,” she said. “When I went on my second visit, it was their Senior Day and they let me go in the locker room and experience that. I really like the team and the coaches. They were all very welcoming and I fit in really well.” Anderson’s aptitude for scoring will be immediately welcome in the WildCats lineup. Last season, Randolph’s top scorer was Kayln Banks, who averaged 9.7 points per game. The WildCats had a rough season last year, going 5-20 and its season ended in the opening round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament. Anderson said toured “about four other” ODAC schools prior to making her decision to attend Randolph. Forest rallied. A single and a hit batter put two runners on for the Kavaliers, then an RBI single and an error scored both of the runners to make it a 9-8 game. But, with the tying run on third base, Dickerson was able to strike out his Kenston Forest opponent to end the game. “We made some plays,” Poore said. “Noa did a great job pitching and Reilly did a good job coming on in relief.” Poore was happy with how complete of a game his team put together.

“Randolph was definitely the one,” she said. The opportunity to play in the ODAC is something that Anderson said she is excited for. “I know a few people at RandolphMacon, so that’ll be fun,” she said. “I know a girl who committed to go to Hollins. I’m really excited to contribute.” Anderson said that she’ll remember “everything” about her time as a Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knight, but her teammates and the memories of the games will be what sticks out the most. She said she knows the game will get a lot faster when she plays at the collegiate level and said she is eyeing a position change when she plays for the WildCats. “I’m hoping to become more of a guard and less of a forward,” she said. “So, I’ll need to work on some more ballhandling skills and things like that.”

“We pretty much did everything today,” he said. “We scored three-or-more in an inning, we answered back, we extended our lead when we had one…it was back and forth, but the kids showed a lot of heart.” As the lone senior on the team, Gupton said that he’s enjoyed the role. “It’s been kind of weird, being captains with juniors and sophomores,” he said. “But, to me, it’s not about that, it is about being a team and playing as a team.” Gupton, a two-sport

athlete for the Knights, said he’s loved being a part of the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot community. “They treat me like family,” he said. “When someone gets down, we always check on them. It’s just a family atmosphere here, it’s been great.” On May 3, the Knights fell to Southampton Academy 11-0, and then lost 14-4 to Fuqua on May 5. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot began Virginia Colonial Conference tournament play at Richmond Christian on May 7.

f you regularly attend high school sporting events, then you become used to certain pre-game atmosphere. The players are warming up with their signature music playing over the loudspeakers, the coaches are ensuring that everyone knows the game plan, and the parents are settling in to watch the proceedings. The occasion that transforms that pre-game atmosphere completely is senior night, and everything suddenly feels much more ceremonial and emotional. During its Senior Night on May 3, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot soccer team did not let this atmosphere distract them. After a surprising 1-0 overtime defeat to Southampton Academy, the Knights will be looking to use that same level of focus to stay on track as they pursue their ultimate goals for this season. out to Cody Willis at first to end the inning and the major threat. Powhatan responded by getting on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. Brad Painter swung and missed at a strike three, but Western Albemarle’s catcher fumbled the catch and the ball got away, allowing Painter to make it to second. He would advance to third on a groundball out by Matthew Church. Logan Amiss reached base on an error by the Warriors third baseman and Painter scored to make it 1-0. Willis then crushed a double to the fence, scoring Amiss to make it 2-0. Willis would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. as Nick Cheseldine, Wesley Clements, Alex Flores, Colby Johnson, Cao-son Le, and Diego Villa were honored by parents, coaches, and administration. “It’s completely different than any other game we’ve played all year,” Johnson said. “You feel different inside, starting in warm-ups, and then you see all the administration and your parents lined up. It’s just surreal.” Once the game was underway, a great chance opened up for the Knights in the 10th minute, when sophomore Carlos Garcia unleashed a stinging strike from the right side. The ball hit the back of the net, but not before the referee’s hand was raised for offside. The action continued to go back-and-forth early in the first half. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot nearly conceded the opening goal in the 16th minute, when the ball was deflected several times inside the Knights’ six-yard box before goalkeeper Wesley Clements saved the ball off the goal line. Just seconds later at the

other end, a shot by Garcia forced a good save from the Raiders’ goalie to keep the game level. The Knights knocked on the door again in the 30th minute, when shots by Garcia and Diego Villa were deflected and the ball was eventually picked up by Southampton’s goalkeeper. The game remained deadlocked at zero at halftime. “We had our moments. There were a couple of times the ball didn’t bounce our way. It happens sometimes. It’s been a challenge every now and then for us this year,” Knights coach Grayson Lovern said. The second half was a dangerous one for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, as Southampton Academy was on the front foot for most of the period. A pair of saves by Clements in the final minutes kept Southampton from stealing the win in regulation. A Raiders corner in stoppage time was deflected onto to the post before being smothered, and the whistle for full time blew shortly after. The game’s only goal

came just seconds into the first of two five-minute overtime periods. A strike from a Southampton midfielder from 30 yards hit the crossbar and found its way into the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot goal. The Knights tried to respond in the final nine minutes, but ultimately could not break through. Despite the loss, Lovern was upbeat about what lies ahead for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot: “That was a tough pill to swallow, but I think we’re hungry. I think the team recognizes that we’ve got the talent and the heart to do it. We just have to put it together. So it’s just a matter of sticking with it and coming out strong.” Seniors Wesley Clements and Colby Johnson were able to see past their disappointment and reflect on their time as Knights. “I’ve been here since ninth grade, and I’ve played soccer and football the entire time. It’s just been a part of my life every day to come outside and run on the field, practice, and just run around and have fun with everybody. That’s proba-

ning, but the Indians were unable to strand those runners as three runs crossed the plate in the frame to tie the game. “Even when they did score three runs, we did a good job of minimizing,” Conner said. “They got three runs, but we didn’t let them get five or six. That was huge.” Powhatan struck back immediately in the bottom of the inning. Hopkins started the inning off with a single, but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice groundball by Tymothy Hart. Brandon Eike singled and both Hart and Eike moved up a base after an error by the Warriors right fielder. Painter then knocked Hart in on a groundball to make it 4-3 Indians. In the bottom of the fifth, Powhatan added an insurance run. Amiss led the inning off with a single, but was

thrown out later in the inning at the plate trying to score. Willis singled and eventually scored to make it 5-3 Powhatan. After the Warriors’ outburst in the fourth inning, the Indians limited Western Albemarle to just one runner on base over the next three innings. Eike came on in relief after Preston pitched six innings and sealed the win in the seventh to deliver the Indians’ win. “When you have good pitching and good defense, you have a chance,” Conner said. “That’s what we have right now. We have a tough stretch coming up.” Part of that tough stretch was a game on May 4, which was a 13-5 win for Powhatan on the road against Albemarle. Amiss was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs in that game, while Nick Rini was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Aidan Voorhees went 2 for 2 against the

Patriots. The Indians continued their road trip on May 7 at Monticello and May 8 against Charlottesville before returning home to face Louisa on May 10.

bly what I’ll remember from here,” Clements said. “It’s been my whole life. Playing three sports throughout high school has really controlled my life. Every day after school, just coming out to practice and then going to games. It’s definitely helped me get through high school,” Johnson said. Lovern also reflected on the impact of this year’s senior class on him: “This

is a special class for me because this is my fourth year, so I’ve been with these seniors since they were in ninth grade. So I’ve been able to watch all of them grow. To be able to teach them and watch them mature, watch them grow in skill and confidence, it’s been a really special thing for me. With them being my first full senior class, I’m going to miss them a lot. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Maiolo commits to play basketball at RMC By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

W

hile most prospective college athletes have the big decision of which college to attend, Powhatan’s Kylee Maiolo had an additional big decision to make—which sport she would play. An accomplished three-sport athlete, Maiolo decided upon her first love, basketball, to play in college. “It was not easy,” she said of choosing a sport. “I love all my sports equally. But, basketball just has a special place in my heart that I can’t ever replace because it’s so amazing.” On April 25, Maiolo made it official that she would attend RandolphMacon and join the women’s basketball team. “Going to college to play sports has always been a dream of mine,” she said. “It was really exciting and fulfilling to sign that piece of paper and be able to achieve that goal of mine.”

Maiolo said that she was attracted to the small size of Randolph-Macon, but also what the coaching staff for the Yellow Jackets brought to the table. “I really loved Coach (Carroll) LaHaye’s coaching style,” she said. “The team is really close. When I went on my visit, they made me feel really welcome and I loved that. The campus is just so beautiful.” Randolph-Macon’s women’s basketball team had a stellar season in 2017-18. The Yellow Jackets won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament championship and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the 12th time in program history. Randolph-Macon went 23-7 last season. They defeated Valley Forge in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament before falling to Christopher Newport University in the second round. During the process of choosing her school, Maiolo kept up with the goings-on of the Yellow

Jackets during their run this season. “I kept up with them online,” she said. “I went to a few of their games as well. I went to their regional game. I’m really proud of them.” LaHaye was named CoCoach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and Randolph-Macon’s Kelly Williams was named Player of the Year. Maiolo isn’t the only Powhatan-area connection in the Yellow Jackets program. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot product Brie Zimmerman is on the team as is Hannah Livermon, a Powhatan High School graduate, who is an assistant coach. Also, Maiolo’s brother Nick was a standout on the baseball team for the Yellow Jackets. She said that going to the same school as her brother means quite a lot to her. “Following in my brother’s footsteps is awesome,” she said. “Nicky excelled so much. I just love being known as a Maiolo.” Maiolo was a member

of the Region 4B champions on the Powhatan field hockey team in the fall, had clutch moments for the Indians girls basketball team in her career, such as the steal-and-score that lifted the Indians to a win over Monticello on Jan. 16, and took over the mantle of goal keeper on the

Indians soccer team two years ago due to an injury to the Powhatan starter, and despite not having played the position ever before she excelled at it. Maiolo has aspirations to become a nurse as a career. Now, as she heads on to continue her athletic ca-

reer at Randolph-Macon, she said that she has a lot of memories that she will cherish from her time at Powhatan. “(I’ll remember) the friendships, my teammates and every relationship I’ve made on every team I’ve been on,” she said. “Those bonds are irreplaceable.”

Alfred is a terrier mix around 1½ to 2 years old. Alfred is neutered, microchipped and up to date on shots. He is a spunky young man, but calms down once he has had a walk or office time. He will need someone who can be patient with him and is willing to train him. Alfred would do best in a home as an only dog, or in a home with a smaller, submissive dog. Please consider giving him the home he needs and deserves. If you would like to schedule a meet and greet please call (804) 598-5672. You can find our other adoptable pets on Petfinder and Facebook.
