OWHATAN – The Virginia Court of Appeals recently upheld the 2016 conviction of a Midlothian man who embezzled more than $300,000 from Clyde Childress, a Powhatan man best known for his former Fourth of July fireworks event and his support of veterans. A written opinion was issued on July 17 upholding the conviction of Charles “Nick” Nordan of Midlothian, who was found guilty in November 2016 of five counts of embezzlement and one count of money laundering. Circuit Court Judge Paul W. Cella presided over the 2016 three-day bench trial, which was held in Powhatan Circuit Court. Cella had sentenced Nordan to 120 years in prison with 90 years and 42 months suspended. He received 20 years for each of the six charges. However, 15 years and seven months was suspended on all six charges, and the remaining years of each charge were set to run concurrently. That means he faced an active period of incarceration of four years and five months. The memorandum opinion by the appeals court was issued by Judge Richard Y. Atlee Jr., but Judge William G. Petty offered a separate but concurring opinion affirming the convictions on narrower grounds than the majority. The third judge to preside over the appeal was Judge Randolph A. Beales. Two days after the appeals court’s decision, Rob Cerullo, deputy commonwealth’s attorney, filed a motion with the Powhatan County Circuit Court to revoke Nordan’s bond. Nordan was granted a bond pending his appeal on June 22, 2017. “I have filed a motion to have his appeal bond revoked and have him taken into custody. We will have to argue that motion because I am sure he is going to file an appeal before the Virginia Supreme Court,” Cerullo said. Nordan’s attorney, J. Brian Bailey, could not be reached for comment by press time. Cerullo handled the prosecution for the original trial but the Virginia Office of the Attorney General see EMBEZZLER, pg. 5

Groove in the Garden sees growth By Laura McFarland News Editor

POWHATAN – Powhatan County Cooperative Extension has taken a taste and take approach to its community garden this summer, and they are hoping it resonates with local residents wanting to adopt healthier, fresher eating habits. For the past four years, the extension office has been growing a garden in the area behind the Village Building that evolves a little more each year, said Cathy Howland, extension agent. This summer, the office teamed up with the GoochlandPowhatan Master Gardeners and some of its Master Food volunteers to make the garden even more interactive and instructional for residents.

Groove in the Garden is held from 10 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of the month through September in the small demo garden, located behind the Village Building at 3910 Old Buckingham Road. Produce quantities are limited. Children are welcome to participate, but there is also a children’s table with age-appropriate activities. The garden was originally intended to attract visitors who were going to donate

or shop at the Clothes Closet or visit the department of social services, Howland said. People could come out and work in the garden and pick vegetables alongside the Master Gardeners. Having people volunteer to work in the garden and even take home some of the fruits (and vegetables and herbs) of their labor is only part of the program. St. Luke's offers free program Contributed Report St Luke’s Episcopal Church will be offering a Wednesday morning Montessori based Christian formation program for children (ages 3–6) beginning Sept. 19. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program is centered on contemplation and enjoyment of God. St. Luke's program, which is also offered on Sunday mornings during the school year, is designed to meet the specific spiritual needs of the child and is supported by a loving church community. The Wednesday morning program provides an alternative option for parents in the community who are seeking to involve their child in a Montessori-based Christian experience. Each of the three "Cate-

chists" has more than 100 hours of training and is a certified CGS instructor. The classes will meet in a special area called the Atrium, which has been carefully prepared with everything the children will need to explore and grow in their faith and knowledge of God's love for them. The program will run Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:15 a.m., and parents will be able to leave their child at the church for that time. The church nursery room is also available for parents and younger siblings who wish to stay on site during the program time. There is no cost to attend the program. Interested parents may contact the church office at 804-794-6953 for further information and to sign up for a program orientation and introduction.

HYPERLOOP Continued from pg. 1

Commonwealth University – who competed in July in the finals of the 2018 SpaceX Hyperloop competition. Starting with more than 600 entries from more than 40 countries, the top 20 teams of college students from around the world met in Hawthorne, California, from July 15 to 22 to compete. Originally announced in 2015, SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s annual Hyperloop Competition seeks to cultivate engineering talent while simultaneously developing innovations for a futuristic transportation system. This year, the competition focused on developing maximum speed pods, trying to work ever closer to Musk’s eventual goal of a pod that can safely transport passengers between locations at 700 mph. That goal is still a long way off. Two-time reigning speed champion WARR Hyperloop from the Technical University of Munich once again earned top place with a pod speed of 290 mph, and that was a recordbreaking speed. Delft University’s Delft Hyperloop and Switzerland’s EPFLoop finished second and third, respectively. “I think the Hyperloop competition is important because we are eventually going to have to be prepared for what the environment throws at us. Having a fifth mode of transportation that is renewable, it is able to transport people at extremely fast speeds, and humans are able to connect a lot faster, I think this is a great direction to go in for the next mode of transportation,” said Chadwick, Hyperloop at VCU president and project manager. VCU and other finalists displayed their pods in tents lining Jack Northrup Avenue on Sunday, July 22, creating a festival-like setting with a grandstand positioned near the entrance of the race tube and about 2,000 people in attendance. Musk stopped at several tents to talk to teams about their designs. Chadwick described the scene as competitive but not cutthroat. Teams would help each other and share when supplies were needed if possible. His team made good connections with the more experienced teams to learn some of what has worked or hasn’t for them on gaining support for their projects. Competing against many teams that had reached the finals twice previously, Hyperloop at VCU, one of just nine teams from the United States to reach the finals, passed many tests during a week of pre-race safety and performance checks with their pod, which has a theoretical top speed of 174 mph. “They’ve stayed focused, grinding it through,

addressing issues,” said their faculty adviser L. Franklin Bost, executive associate dean for innovation and outreach in the VCU College of Engineering. “It reminds me a bit of the pits in an auto race where all the teams are still working on their vehicles.” “Some teams pulled out early and the VCU team continued working. They’ve made it through many, many of the qualifications,” Bost said. “I think most people feel like they’ve tried their hardest, because they have,” Chadwick said. “They’ve been pushing really hard, even harder than they had to [in order to] catch up to these multiple-year teams.” While the VCU team didn’t win, its members gained a wealth of knowledge, experience and connections he thinks will serve them well when they compete in Space X’s next competition, which has already been announced but no date given, said Chadwick, who is a mechanical engineering major. “We already started the preplanning phase and we are really excited for next year. Now we know the process of designing and building a Hyperloop pod. So now we can perfect that process and backtrack now that we know what we are doing,” he said. The project drew on a variety of skill sets needed to make the team’s pod a reality, ranging from engineering to marketing to fundraising. Powers, a double major in accounting and finance, acted as the fundraising lead, contacting potential sponsors to get donations within the school and the community. Powers said his biggest hurdle in the fundraising process has been educating people about Hyperloop and why it is

important. What resonated with people was that the technology is being worked on by so many people around the world. “It is just the fact that we have an opportunity here in Richmond to actually make a difference with that technology and be a part of something that is getting started. It is going to be huge,” he said. “This is going to happen with or without us and we need to be a part of it so we can contribute.” Before he could educate others, Powers said he first had to learn about Hyperloop himself. He had been friends with Chadwick since the pair were both in the Powhatan High School Jazz Band. However, it was a conversation they had on the street last fall, when Chadwick was just starting the project and looking for people who could help, that really sparked Powers’ interest and made him do research of his own. “I read about the competition and realized this is happening. So many other schools and countries and companies are trying to make this work. I want to be a part of that, where it is just getting started and I can make a difference,” he said. In addition to the huge task of fundraising for the project, Powers wanted to help with the actual build. He would help out in the machine shop, doing any task one of the engineers could show him how to do to so their time was freed up for more complex tasks. Chadwick said not only is he proud of the team’s performance, he’s also proud of the growth among Hyperloop at VCU’s 35 core team members and the way they worked with each other. He has been responsible for the leads and then they make sure their teams do what they

are supposed to do. “It’s nice seeing people interacting with each other on their own, following up and pushing themselves,” he said. “People are becoming more intrinsically motivated because they know what they’re doing and see their potential for next year.” VCU President Mi-

plished since Hyperloop at VCU launched in September 2017. “I think you’ve taken VCU to the next level,” he said. “Look at the company you’re in here. You guys continue to elevate VCU.” Rao said the students are “absolutely at the top” in terms of their ability to function as a large team, in their mechanical engineering skills and their business skills. Now with a full year to incorporate all they’ve learned from this competition and to plan for the next one, Rao said he is “excited about all the future years.” Hyperloop at VCU is already planning and fundraising for next year’s competition. handled the appeals case. “The commonwealth and the victim are very pleased the court of appeals agreed with Judge Cella’s ruling and we are hoping justice will be served,” Cerullo said. Cerullo said he expects a hearing to be held in early August on his motion to revoke bond. He noted that when Nordan was granted bond, it was with the understanding that he would begin working so he could make restitution payments to Childress. “The theory was that if you lock him up pending the appeal, he can’t work to pay restitution. He was let out and he said, ‘I have this great job, I am going to make all this money and pay restitution,’ but that has not as of yet come to fruition,” Cerullo said. According to court documents, Nordan, under the guise of raising capital for businesses that would primarily invest in solar energy and train veterans to install solar panels, met with Childress in 2015 as a potential partner and investor. Childress agreed to invest because he supported the businesses’ goals, particularly helping veterans. Among court records for the case was a proposal submitted for a 10 MV solar farm in Saluda to Old Dominion. It lists Childress as president and Nordan as CEO. The document’s executive summary said that the solar farm would provide “sustainable farming training to veterans through the ‘DOD Armed to Farm’ program.” It also called it a “100 percent owned veteran company,” and later in the document, it said “Nordan has been in the U.S. Army for 35 years.” During a three-month period in summer 2015, Childress invested $235,500 in cash into five

businesses that were supposed to accomplish these tasks, Cerullo had said in a 2016 interview. There was also another $77,287.54 put in to the company from other sources related to the victim’s investment. The commonwealth produced evidence and witnesses that showed Nordan used company funds to buy a wide range of personal items such as a 2003 Jaguar for himself; a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle; a 2015 Chevy pickup truck; a vacation to Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina for his son on a company credit card; dental work for himself; $35,000 funneled through another company to pay of a personal loan (source of the money laundering charge), and several thousand dollars to refurbish a building in Powhatan County that the defendant owned. Rather than denying these actions, Nordan’s appeal made motions to strike down Cella’s ruling based on four arguments: fatal variance, failure to prove that the funds were entrusted to him, failure to prove fraudulent intent, and saying Cella erred in failing to dismiss the embezzlement charges pursuant to a claim of right defense. Atlee’s opinion picked apart all of the arguments, outlining how each failed on several merits. Petty took a narrower approach, specifically addressing how the commonwealth interwove evidence regarding the way Childress was duped and how Nordan tries to use that in his own arguments. Petty argued that Nordan made fraudulent payments exceeding $200 from the five companies to another company for purported lease payments and that alone “was sufficient to convict Nordan of the crimes for which he was indicted.” Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

‘The way things are’ can be a scary thing By Laura McFarland News Editor

An hour before I wrote this column, I was crying for something I only just realized I have lost. Anyone who reads my column on a semi-regular basis knows that this writer is essentially an optimist. I have literally written about fluffy feelings I got while looking at fluffy clouds and not that long ago at that. Yes, I can see the negative implications of a situation or someone’s behavior, but there also are many times when perfidy and horrible behavior take me by surprise. That actually doesn’t worry me. I’ve always said I would be more worried to stop being surprised by the horrible things humans do to each other than the day when I just sit back and accept that this is the way things are now. Cynicism creeps up on you, or at least it did in my case. Looking back, I remember when my sister called me on the day of the June 28 shooting in the Capital Gazette newsroom. She wanted to make sure I was OK – not because I had ever been there or knew anyone at the newspaper, but because our profession was a shared connection. Of course, I was in shock. How could I not be? Never having been in that newsroom, my mind instead superimposed the images of the newsrooms where I had worked and the people alongside whom I had worked. I thought of someone storming into those newsrooms and mowing those people down and I felt like someone had reached into my chest and was trying to wring all the blood out of it. And yet when my sister called and our conversation turned to “the way things are,” I found myself pointing out that there is no such thing anymore as ground too sacred to be touched by violence. In the last decade, what place we once visited without a care

in the world hasn’t been touched by violence – schools, places of worship, clubs, stores, movie theaters, office buildings, restaurants, concerts, or homes. When something happens, we are shocked, and maybe even fearful, but life does eventually move on. If not, we would have to exist in a constant state of terror. I liken it to getting into a car even knowing that people die in car crashes every day. You can either do the best you can to drive safe and be mindful of those around you, or you can fret about every vehicle that approaches you being a potential weapon out to harm you and see how long your nerves last. All of this is to say that I have never felt like I was in a heightened state of fear outside of potentially dangerous situations. But then last week a group of friends and I attended a special movie screening event in North Carolina, watching “Serenity,” an old favorite science fiction movie that has a loyal fan following. The screening was held at a dine-in theater with small walled sections dividing much of the seating into clusters. We chose a section near the back so as to avoid being overly disturbed by the movement of the wait staff. About 25 minutes into the movie, a man came into the theater and stood in the aisle not far from where we sat, leaning against one of the walled-off raised sections. He stood in the dark, wearing a trench coat, holding a backpack in one hand and with his other in his coat pocket. I don’t know how long he stood there because I know anxiety can make time feel like it is stretching out. I don’t know the timing but it was long enough for a wave of apprehension and disjointed thoughts to crash over the calm of my night out with friends. What was in that backpack? He could just be looking for someone, right? Why is he wearing a trench coat

Be kind, please rewind. And then there was one By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

When a pair of Blockbuster Video Stores shuttered their doors in Alaska in recent months, it left only one store remaining from the powerhouse corporation’s once dominant position and its more than 9,000 stores boasted in its heyday. A single outlet in Bend, Oregon, claims the title as the last man or woman standing in an industry that sat by helpless as technology passed it by. The super stores in metropolitan areas were the first to go, but, eventually, the trend claimed all of the corporations once vaunted operations. Some gave up the old habit more quickly than others, and, to this day, there’s still a steady of line of cars that pull up to small red boxes that rent movies to the consumers still adventurous enough to actually handle the title they are watching. And, there’s no doubt, we don’t have the same relationship with wireless rentals and movies that are delivered in the blink of an eye as we enjoyed with the neighboring gathering places called video stores. “I’m going to get a couple of videos” is a term that seems foreign to my children who grew up in an era where a trip to the video store was as unknown as references to eighttrack tapes. But, those of us who lived it realize the video rental era was more than just the opportunity to obtain a popular movie and enjoy it in the comfort of your home. A trip to the video store was always more of a social exercise, a proclamation that a population was eager to embrace the technology of the future. Attendance at movie theaters plummeted as Americans chose to pop their own popcorn and watch movies at their own pace and with their own homespun style. Even with the unique and new environment of a busy outlet, the age of the video tape was doomed almost from the start, as a collection

of more advanced delivery systems chased and finally caught the industry providing Americans with one-touch ordering for movies or other entertainment. Many of the stores switched from cassette to CD in an effort to capture the changing market, but it was evident that the video tape was headed for the same fate as the Walkman. In an era when every open storefront seemed to beckon the opening of a new video store, it seemed impossible the trend was facing such an untimely demise. But, convenience prevailed and Americans clearly demonstrated a preference to sit at home and select movies from seemingly unending lists, minus the trip to the local video store. A clerk at one of the last Blockbusters said that many people placed trash in the video return window. But, there were still the loyal few who refused to surrender to the demands of advancing technology and continued to frequent the few remaining stores. And, now there’s one. The manager said her customer base is confined to locals who live near the store, and most people stop at the store for a quick selfie, or a chance to experience one more small disappearing part of Americana that will be lost forever. Baby Boomers are a multi-generational group. They’ve seen things come and go before. Remember, there used to be cigarette lighters and ash trays in every car produced. Losing the last semblance of an age when family movie night encompassed a trip to the video store is not a major upset in our daily routines, but some lament the loss of any sign of a slower and less complicated time when passwords were not required. The rest of us salute the final Blockbuster and wish the surviving outlet a long and prosperous future. In reality, it’s more of a case of good riddance and a willingness to forget and bury a phrase that once seemed like everyday communication. “Be kind, please rewind,” no more. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-730-0476

when the weather is in the 80s? If something starts to happen, do we have anything in our booth that could be used for protection? The exit is right there – could my friends and I make it? What about everyone else? This is crazy, nothing is going to happen. Don’t think about the 2012 shooting in a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight.” Nothing is going to happen. And yet as I watched him and the sound of my heartbeat in my ears became louder than the action on the screen, these were the thoughts careening around in my head with all the grace of the little ball in a pinball machine. I am not saying they were rational thoughts, but then fear is rarely rational. Sometimes fear can be helpful, as with the heightened awareness of a woman walking to her car in a dark parking lot who suddenly realizes she is not as alone as she thought. And sometimes it can just be paralyzing. After what seemed like an eternity, the man eventually removed his coat and found an unoccupied chair in another section. No crisis, just an annoying latecomer to the theater. My heartbeat returned to normal. I chastised myself for being silly. Focus on the movie. Focus on having a good time with my friends. And, overall, I did have a wonderful time. It took about 24 hours for it all to sink in and for me to really process how I responded to the situation. And when I did, I cried – tears shed not because we were ever in any danger from that stranger in a darkened room. No, the tears came on the heels of the realization that, without my knowledge, my view of the world had gradually but forever altered by the reality of “the way things are.” Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Board should hire outside expert Dear Editor, I attended the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on July 25, which ran until 1:45 a.m. Seems to be a trend, when discussing landfills. I had the opportunity to speak, during the public forum, addressing the expansion of Shoosmith's landfill into the quarry. The gist was the capacity of Shoosmith is 20 million tons. Currently, they have 1.6 million tons, with a life expectancy of 31 years for operation. They are neighbors to the Amelia landfill, with 150 years of life. Why was an expansion necessary? Virginia is losing its motto! It is no longer the state for lovers, but quickly becoming the state for landfills from out of state! The Chesterfield County Supervisors hired Golder Associates of Richmond to perform an independent study of the quarry. Golder Associates of Richmond cited many issues. Shoosmith also had its own hired studies performed. A conflict, you decide? Thankfully, the board of supervisors had to rely on the facts from their independent study, and their vote defeated the expansion, 5-0. Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors showed common sense, and I applaud their passion to stand by their constituents. The burden for Chesterfield County citizens’ public safety falls upon the shoulders of the Chesterfield County's Board of Supervisors. Based on Chesterfield County's public safety codes, Shoosmith's expansion violated sections of their safety codes. The supervisors chose to rely on the facts from the independent company. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) permits are based on the structural integrity of the proposed developments in the permitting process. In a general sense, 9VAC20-81-25, states, "in order to protect the public health, public safety the environment, and our natural resources." However, the focus of DEQ is "The requirements for siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, closure, and postclosure care of solid waste management facilities." The burden for protecting the residents of Cumberland County should be the first priority of ALL the supervisors. If you look at the county's codes, in Cumberland County's code/ordinances, public safety is empty, "reserved." This is an issue! The Cumberland County Supervisors, as Chesterfield BoS, are not educated to make decisions in public health risk endeavors and should be hiring an INDEPENDENT company, such as Golder Associates of Richmond. The board of supervisors is responsible for the public safety of Cumberland County and will be held accountable for their negligence. Victoria Ronnau Powhatan County

ven before the Powhatan Youth Athletic Association Belles team arrived in Louisiana for the Dixie World Series, the team was encountering firsts along the way. As the team travelled in a van, one of the things donated by the Powhatan community for the Belles, they crossed into states such as Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, before arriving in Louisiana. For many of the Belles, it was the first time they’d ever been in those states.

“(The van) was really neat, it allowed all the girls to be together on the way down,” coach Matt O’Quinn said. “It was really nice for them to bond and to think about all the games they’d played and they were getting ready to play. That was probably one of the best parts of the trip was that they were able to be together on the trip down.” O’Quinn said that everyone involved with the team appreciated the tremendous support the team received from the Powhatan community and local businesses. On the field, however, the trip did not go so well for the Belles as they fell in

two straight games on July 28 and July 29 and were eliminated from the World Series. The Belles wore Virginia uniforms as they were the state champions and brought a Virginia state flag with them that flew over the field during the duration of their tournament. On July 28, Powhatan faced Georgia and lost 14-2. Jordan Dudley was 2 for 3 for Powhatan, while Alyssa O’Quinn and Taylor Baker scored the only two runs of the game. Kailee Dalton had an RBI. Powhatan racked up eight hits against Georgia, with Taylor Baker stealing two bases.

In the second game, Powhatan went up against Mississippi and while they led 5-2 in the third inning, the bats for Mississippi hit a groove and the game ended 12-7 in favor of Mississippi. Dudley was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Powhatan in the second game of the tournament, while Dalton was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. O’Quinn scored two runs for Powhatan, with Olivia Hamby and Peyton Baker knocking in one run each. Powhatan didn’t have a problem hitting the ball against Mississippi, as they see BELLES, pg. 3B

District tourney altered, ending Post 201’s season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Post 201’s Austin Nicholas drove in the first run of the game against Post 125 in the fifth inning with a bases-loaded single to centerfield.

When the District 11 tournament was originally scheduled, Post 201’s win over Post 125 on July 23 would have propelled Post 201 forward in the tournament and they would have played Post 284 in the second game of the elimination bracket. However, due to the weather forecast as well as the condition of the fields around the area, the District 11 commissioner ruled that the double-elimination tournament would become single-elimination instead. The decision eliminated all the teams in the tournament except for Post 175 and Post 137 and rendered the game between Post 201 and Post 125 meaningless out-

side of development of the players. “Those decisions are made much higher than me,” Post 201 coach Eric Mead said. “However, I always tend to make decisions that are best for the baseball players. We’re very upset about this decision because there are a whole lot of baseball players, on multiple teams, who didn’t get to play the baseball games they should have gotten to play this year.” Mead continued by saying that not only did the decision neuter the teams that had already lost a game, but also took the opportunity for many of the players who are aging out from playing their final American Legion game. “That’s what it’s about,” he said. “It’s see LEGION, pg. 2B

Roundup: Woodson finishes ninth at State Open From contributed and staff reports

P

rofessional Golfers Association professional, four-time Virginia State Open Champion and Powhatan native Jay Woodson competed in the 2018 Delta Dental Virginia Open at Roanoke’s Ballyhack Golf Club on July 19-21. Opening day was bright and sunny on this hilly, challenging course, but it was not kind to Woodson. A triple-bogey on the 447-yard par-4 fourth hole and a single birdie on the round led to a first day score of 4-over par 76 and a tie for 63rd place. “There are no simple or easy holes,” he said, summing up his first day. “Every hole requires your complete focus otherwise you can lose a ball in a second”. Woodson quickly bounced back on the second day, scoring 69 with a total of seven birdies for the day, ensuring that he made the cut to play on the final day of the Virginia State Open with a two-day score of 1-over par. Woodson’s 14 years of professional experience came into play in the final round. With storm clouds gathering and the wind picking up, he started the day tied for 25th, but quickly moved up the leaderboard with six birdies on the front nine, adding an additional three birdies on the back stretch.

not about who is going to states. It’s not about any of that stuff. What it should be about is these kids getting an opportunity to be on the baseball field. They deserve it. They’ve worked hard all year and to have it end like this, I’m very upset about it. I know there are a lot of other coaches who feel the same way.” The game between Post 201 and 125 was one that was worthy of deciding who would advance or not in the district tournament, had it continued on as scheduled. Thanks to a four-run fifth inning, Post 201 defeated Post 125 5-1. Through the first four innings, the teams battled back and forth, with no runs being scored. Post 125 threatened in the top of the third inning, with runners on the corners with two outs, but Post 201 pitcher Owen Agee was able to get a pop-out to first to end the threat. In the bottom of the third, Post 201 had a similarly good chance. Trey Johnson reached base after a one-out error by Post 125’s third baseman and advanced to second on the errant throw. He eventually reached third when Post 125’s catcher threw the ball into centerfield trying to pick off Johnson at second. But, when Austin Nicholas flew out to centerfield, Johnson tried to score and was thrown out

“I’ve always had a special spot for the Virginia State Open,” he said. “This was my first experience in professional golf as a tournament kid and to still have the opportunity to compete in this tournament is really cool”. As he sank his final birdie of the day on the 18th green, almost on cue his two-year-old son Maddox called out “Daa-ddy”. His final round 65 gave him a tie for a ninth-place finish. He ended the 54hole competition with a total of 17 birdies and a three-day score of 76-6965 for a 210 overall. This wasn’t the first time that Woodson has had a tremendous come-frombehind performance. After winning the title of State Open Championship in 2012, 2013, and 2014, Woodson rallied back from an eight-shot deficit in 2016 to force a threeway playoff, winning his fourth title in five years on the second playoff hole. “There’s a great camaraderie with all the guys who play in this tournament,” Woodson said. “Even though we’re all trying to win, it’s fun to compete against your friends.” Last year, Woodson played on the PGA’s Canadian Mackenzie Tour, but with his son, Trey, growing fast and the birth of his second son, Maddox, he felt that it was time to spend more time close to home devoted to his family. When a friend approached him about working in his Richmond real

estate business, Woodson felt it was the perfect time to shift gears and spend more time at home in Powhatan. “I mostly miss competing and waking up every day with a plan to try to get better at golf,” he said. But, his love of golf is never far away. Woodson recently placed seventh in the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational Tournament in Pittsburgh and has been spending his free time giving lessons to local golfers looking to improve their game and mentoring some members of the Powhatan High School team. The Woodson family name is ingrained in the sports legacy of Powhatan. Besides Jay’s success in golf, his father Jim recently retired after 33 years as the winningest football coach in the Richmond area. His mother, Joann, taught many of Powhatan’s youth as a Physical Education teacher, and his wife Erin is following in her footsteps as Physical Education teacher at Powhatan’s elementary schools. What does the immediate future hold for Jay? “I’m enjoying my new job with Real Property Management – Richmond Metro,” he said. “But, I still love giving lessons and so we are just taking it one day at a time and I’m enjoying spending more time with my family.” He plans on playing in the Virginia State Open as long as his game is competitive.

at the plate. In the bottom of the fourth, 201 executed a hitand-run as Adam Seal was in motion and Jacob Beil hit into the gap between first and second. However, with runners on the corners and two out, a fly ball to shortstop off the bat of Josh Dawson ended the inning. In the fifth, the runs came for both teams. In the top of the frame, Post 125 scored on an error to make it 1-0. Post 201 came to bat in the fifth and worked three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Nicholas knocked in Cody Willis after Post 125 changed pitchers to make it 1-1. Then, Carter Minnick grounded into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Sam Reid to score and made it 2-1. TJ Jordan then flew out to right field and Johnson scored on the sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead. Minnick scored on an error later in the inning and Post 201 took a 4-1 lead. After that, Tommy Preston took the mound in the sixth and allowed just one runner and struck out two batters to close out the win for 201. “Toward the end of the season, we were struggling with our bats,” Mead said. “It held true tonight. We finally had some stuff happen and put things together in the fifth inning. Our pitchers pitched really well and kept the pitch counts down and kept ahead in the count. I

thought we played well.” On July 23, Reilly Dickerson did his best to throw off the hitters of the top seed Post 175, but a three-run home run put a big enough gap on Post 201 to keep the team at bay for the remainder of the game in a 5-1 loss. “It’s the same way we played them last time,” Mead said. “Reilly did a heck of a job. He just made that one mistake, which turned into a home run. He hit a couple of batters. If we could have eliminated about three opportunities on the mound for him to do a bit better, we could have stopped about two or three runs. We just struggled at the plate to make contact and score runs.” Post 201 scored in the first inning after Minnick worked a leadoff walk and made it to second on a stolen base. Three batters later, Beil grounded sharply to second base and the throw to first was way off target, allowing Minnick to score and make it 1-0. The lead didn’t last, however, as Zach Beach drove in Nick Zona on an RBI single for a tie 1-1 game. Post 175 added another in the second, when Trey Karnes scored on a single off the bat of Brian Sisson to make it 2-1 Post 175. The heavy lumber came in the bottom of the fourth, when Karnes and Austin Odell reached base and Camden Grimes launched an offering from Dickerson to centerfield

Only six batters struck out for Post 201 over the course of the game. Post 201 left four runners on base as they sought, but couldn’t find, consistent opportunities to score runs. Cale Agee, Beil, Dawson, Zach Frame, Johnson, Jordan, Seal and Willis will all age out of American Legion. Hunter Montgomery still has a year of eligibility, but will be entering a school program in Norfolk that will prevent him from returning. “We had a tremendous amount of talent on this team,” Mead said. “It’s probably the most talented team that 201 has had in a few years. It was a lot of fun to coach this team. I really enjoyed it. Every one of them represented

the American Legion Post the way we asked them to. They were respectful baseball players and they carried themselves well.” Mead said he’s looking at the loss of nine players from this year’s roster as an opportunity for next season. “We’ll be a younger team and start rebuilding the program,” he said. “That’s the good thing about Legion, you never know what comes out the next year. It’s all a crapshoot until you see who decided to play Legion next year.”

hile the weather did not cooperate with the Powhatan lacrosse camp at Powhatan High School from July 23-26, that did not prevent the campers from learning about the game that has continued its growth in the county. “We didn’t have much luck with the weather and we were forced to be in the gym for three of the four days,” coach Joe Niles wrote in an email. “But, the kids were resilient and while I knew they wanted to be outside, they were still able to have fun and kept a good attitude through the camp.” Niles, the boys lacrosse coach for the Indians varsity team, along with girls varsity coach Laura Camp, headed up the camp and were assisted by current and former Powhatan lacrosse players. “Having our current and former lacrosse players help out with the camp was instrumental in making the camp successful,”

recorded nine hits as a team, but Powhatan stranded eight runners on base. Dalton, Dudley, Hamby, Naida Howell and Erika Roark all stole bases for Powhatan against Mississippi, with Dalton and Dudley swiping two bags each. “There’s always going be some nerves, everyone was pretty anxious going into it,” O’Quinn said. “With the exception of Taylor Baker, who had reached the World Series as a Darling, we really didn’t know what to expect down here. Everyone you’re playing is a state

Camp wrote in an email. “They were so enthusiastic with the campers, as well as creative with the drills the campers did. They are fantastic models for these young girls. We incorporated the counselors into various activities, including drills relay races and scrimmages. The girls loved it.” Niles wrote that having the current and former players on hand was part of developing the larger Powhatan lacrosse family. “All players and parents, both past and present, are part of the Powhatan lacrosse family,” he wrote. “I’ve also worked with the varsity boys to understand that the game is about more than just themselves. They all need to look for ways to give back to the game and grow the game whenever possible.” Part of this family atmosphere that the lacrosse team is trying to build is about giving back. For example, Niles wrote that his son, Ethan, brought some of his old lacrosse sticks and gave them to some of the campers who didn’t have any.

Niles and Camp wrote that the camp focused on the fundamentals of lacrosse, such as throwing, catching, ground balls, shooting, offense and defense. “The fundamentals are key to being a strong lacrosse player,” Camp wrote. “We want to make sure the girls learn them correctly.” “We also worked on how to play the game and how to be successful on and off the field,” Niles wrote. “How important it is to have a good attitude and to give maximum effort all the time, to always try your best and what it means to be a good teammate.” While the camp did separate into the boys and girls sides, it was a unified effort between the two teams as one lacrosse program. “Working together with the boys program to make a successful lacrosse camp was easy,” Camp wrote. “Joe Niles and I have the same passion for our teams. We support each other’s efforts and respect each other tremendously.

champion, so you know you’re going to fast some stiff competition. The team from Mississippi, that’s the best that Mississippi has to offer, so you know they’re going to be good.” Despite the change from Powhatan to Virginia for the two games in the World Series, the team was sure to still make it well known to all as to where exactly in the state they were from. “Most of the girls, when they were posting on Facebook or Instagram were still hashtagging things as Powhatan,” O’Quinn said. “They didn’t forget about their community or where they’re from.”

However, the Belles were proud to retrieve the Virginia flag from its place at the field after they were eliminated from the competition. “We had to bring a Virginia state flag with us and at the end of the last game, they present your state flag back to you,” O’Quinn said. “Those girls sprinted out in centerfield and picked up that flag after we were done with the game. They were all really excited out there.” While the team did not accomplish its ultimate goal, O’Quinn said that the team would hold the memories of the trip to the World Series in their memories forever.

It takes a village and we are lucky to have the boys team in our village.” “I really like working with Coach Camp and Coach (Angie) Van Buskirk,” Niles wrote. “They are doing such an amazing job with the girls program. Coach Camp has a

lot of good coach ideas and drills and I do my best to steal from her as much and as often as I can. I like to think of Powhatan High School lacrosse as two teams, but one family.” It was a strong turnout for both the girls and boys, signaling the continued

growth in the interest of the game in the county. “The strong turnover in the number of girls at camp is exciting,” Camp wrote. “The interest level in girls lacrosse is definitely growing in Powhatan and we hope it continues.”
