Candidates speak their minds at NAACP’s community forum By Laura McFarland Editor

OWHATAN – Twenty men and women vying for the votes of residents shared a little about themselves and their views at a Candidates Community Forum held by the Powhatan County Branch of the NAACP. In an event that lasted a little more than three hours on Saturday, Oct. 19, candidates running for state and local positions talked about their views on a variety of issues. The event was held at the War Memorial and Cultural Arts Center. Rather than a debate, each candidate was given the chance to both tell a little about themselves and why people should vote for them and answer some specific questions from moderators Ronald Mack and

POWHATAN – Powhatan County Public Schools didn’t waste any time after finishing the newly renovated Pocahontas Landmark Center to start making the transition into the building. From May to early October, the former Pocahontas Middle School was repurposed and updated from a school to working office and community space, said Dr. Jason Tibbs, director of facilities. After finishing the major construction work the week before, moving began last week to bring PCPS administrators and instructors who were spread out on different buildings and campuses under one roof. During the Powhatan County School Board’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the members voted unanimously to approve the building’s name change, wanting to move forward on a moniker that would both honor the school’s history and incorporate the various entities that will be housed there in the future, including the county’s parks and recreation department, the Christmas Mother program’s headquarters, and other potential tenants. The renovation work Tibbs emphasized during a tour on Monday, Oct. 14 focused on the portion of the building that will be used by the school administration. Other sections of the school will either be reorganized by the entities using them or remain untouched for the time being. A good portion of the space the school administration will use is the part of the building built in the 1930s to teach the county’s older black students. One of the highlights Tibbs pointed out was the new auditorium, which was a library when the middle school closed. The space will house school board meetings, training classes, and other community functions

but will likely not be in use until January 2020, he said. The room was outfitted with tables and chairs to meet the needs of a variety of functions. “We mirrored it very similar to what is in the Village Building within the courthouse so we could have very much the capability they have in that building in here,” he said. Dr. Lynn ClaytonPrince, who served as the middle school principal for several years, said it was hard seeing the school close, although she is glad it didn’t sit empty for too long. She appreciated the transformation of the building from school to office space but also the nods to its history. For instance, the library’s transition into an auditorium actually represents it coming full circle, since that was the original purpose of the space. “Seeing former people who were students here and hearing them tell me what it used to be when they used to be here in the 50s and 60s, it is magical to see their expressions and how they light up when they see what it currently is. If they haven’t been able to see it over the last four years, I would be happy to see them come back. This is the 50th year of its closing in 1969, so it would be nice for them to come and see what it currently is,” she said, referencing the desegregation of Powhatan’s public schools. Fresh paint, carpet, and tile could be found throughout most of the renovated space, with the features of the building offset by multi-tone carpet and accent walls, Tibbs said. New white, gray and orange tiles were laid down in some of the hallways. Because the building was a school, the question from the beginning was how best to use the large classroom spaces, Tibbs said. Staff went the route of large partitioned walls that divide the see MOVE, pg. 6

learned a great deal from that experience. Hairston also appreciated the turnout at the forum regarding both candidate participation and the number of people who came to listen. In all, 18 of the 24 official candidates listed on the ballot attended the event as well as two people running write-in campaigns for the school board’s District 1 seat. Every candidate responded to the invitation, but some were unable to attend. Hairston added she hopes people who came to the event walked away feeling better informed. “Everybody got to see what they were about and they will form their own opinions,” she said. Andrew Snead Sr., local NAACP vice president, ended the event by reminding the audience that voting is a privilege they all have as American citizens, “Let your vote be your voice. If you don’t vote, you remain very silent,” he said. Each candidate was given the opportunity to start their time by telling about themselves and end by reiterating why Powhatan residents should vote for them. In between, each office had a specific set of questions they were asked.

State candidates With the candidates for state offices, they were all asked to explain their stances on Medicaid Expansion and gun control. Virginia Senate District 10 candidate Ghazala F. Hashmi, democrat, spoke about her 30 years of experience as an educator in Virginia and her belief in how high quality education improves lives. She explained her support of Medicaid Expansion, saying she believes healthcare is a right, not “a privilege for just a wealthy few.” She said she was delighted when the General Assembly passed Medicaid Expansion to cover 400,000 previously uninsured Virginias and discussed keeping the cost of prescription medications down and capping the cost of necessary medications such as insulin. On gun control, Hashmi advocated for universal background checks, a ban on assault rifles, and red flag laws. Virginia House of Delegates District 65 candidate R. Lee Ware Jr., the republican incumbent, said he strives to represent all people conscientiously, regardless of who they are or what they believe. He pointed out that Medicaid Expansion is now law, but he did not support it becoming so because he believes Virginia could not afford it. Medicaid Expansion is being paid for by about $300 million from a hospital tax in Virginia and $3.3 billion from the federal government, he said. In the face of a $22.8 trillion national debt, he said it was not a fiscally responsible decision and it squeezes out other important needs. Ware said the matter of gun control needs to be taken up thoughtfully instead of as an immediate reaction to a tragedy. He supports hearing recommendations from the Crime Commission “for a thorough and thoughtful review.” Opponent Michael P. “Mike” Asip, democrat, talked about his career as an educator, special educa-

tion director, and advocate at the state and national levels for people with special needs. He said he was a strong advocate for Medicaid Expansion and would seek to both protect and expand it if elected “because we have to address prescription drug costs that have skyrocketed.” A budget is a set of values with a dollar signs attached, but public health is a right, not a luxury, he said. He is a strong proponent of the 2nd Amendment but said work needs to be done to look for common ground on reasonable gun violence prevention methods. He said he supports universal background checks and red flag laws.

Local offices The race for Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District directors has two positions open but John Kochensparger is the only certified candidate for the race. The positions are important to manage the money allocated by the General Assembly and to help local farmers apply for grants that would help them modernize some of their farming practices. He talked about the importance of local boards doing this kind of work instead of waiting for the federal government to tell localities what to do. He was asked about the potential landfill in Cumberland County and said while the board was not asked to take a position, he is against it. Both candidates for sheriff were asked about their views on diversity in the office and implementing it and proactive initiatives to help prevent hate crimes and mass shootings. Incumbent Brad Nunnally talked about how he had followed through on his promises from his last campaign, especially increasing patrol deputy numbers. He pointed to figures showing he has increased representation in his office of minorities and women and says he emphasizes the core beliefs of doing what is right, enforcing the law equitably, and becoming part of the community to his employees. Regarding hate crimes, he discussed teaching people what to do in case of an active shooter and recognizing their potential characteristics. Vince Whittaker talked about being a dedicated worker bee who has worked in a variety of roles in law enforcement that made him capable of handling the office. He emphasized hiring in Powhatan to attract people who love the county and have roots here. He also spoke about more of a presence at the high school, educating pastors on how to increase security and having a citizen review board.

Board of supervisors Each of the supervisors was asked to identify their

top priorities, asked about their stance on the Farm Bureau’s Ag Vision, discuss how they would ensure a harmonious working relationship with the school board. District 1 candidate Sandra E. Brindley talked about building an effective relationship with other county leaders, growing wisely, the need to improve the county’s infrastructure (roads specifically), having a viable relationship with the school board, and making sure every measure put before the board is thought out with fiscally responsible solutions. She talked about the need to define Powhatan’s definition of rural and being accessible to the community. She spoke about how being a former educator would help work with the school board. District 2 candidate Laurence J. Nordvig, who is running unopposed, said his priorities are keeping Powhatan from becoming Chesterfield, Powhatanfriendly commercial growth, broadband, promoting agribusiness, and working on traffic issues. He supports the Ag Vision and growing niche farming and agribusiness. He emphasized the importance of working well with the school board. District 4 candidate William L. Cox’s priorities were to rewrite the comprehensive plan, better manage the county’s debt capacity with a 10-year capital improvement plan, find a better long-term water solution for the county, use economic development to drive business growth with a clear direction, and to become more sophisticated on handing the business of the county. He talked about being an organic farmer and how he fully supports the Ag Vision. The two boards need to improve communication and have supervisors championing the schools to make sure they work well together in harder times, he said. Opponent Eddie H. Whitt said his priorities are advocating for Powhatan’s roads, going after grants and funds for broadband implementation, having continuous communication with the school board, having housing for younger generations of existing Powhatan families, and creating a strategic plan that goes beyond the comprehensive plan. He is a small farmer with a strong history in agriculture and said the Ag Vision can go even further. District 5 candidate Karin Carmack said her top priorities are to find a sustainable water source, increasing broadband, having an updated thoroughfare plan, and updating the county’s proffer guidelines. She is in favor of the AgVision and talked about supporting it through better zoning, education through see CANDIDATES pg. 8

Six smart ways that parents can make Halloween safer for young children Contributed Report Children love the costumes, treats and friendly frights of Halloween parties and going door to door. These can be safe and fun activities for all of us, even younger children. But the Powhatan Fire and Rescue wants parents to know that flames can quickly ruin Halloween festivities. You can keep your child safe from fire and burn injuries by following these six tips: 1. Children are naturally drawn to glowing jack-o’-lanterns and other flickering lights. Instead of flames, use battery-powered candles or flashlights to decorate. Lit candle flames can burn children. If children come too close to the flame, their clothing can catch on fire. Battery-powered candles are the safer choice. 2. Make sure that all decorations are kept away from flames and other types of heat. 3. Keep all matches and lighters locked up. They should be in a high place out of your child’s reach. Teach young children that they must not touch or play with these

Avoid loose fabric and features that dangle or drag behind the child. Keep costume sleeves tight. Look for a fabric label that reads “flameresistant” or “flame-retardant.” Keep a close eye on your child. Even flame-resistant fabric can burn. 5. Never let children play with or carry lit candles. Operation Christmas Child recipient shares her story Contributed Report On Saturday, Sept. 28, Operation Christmas Child shoebox recipient Alina Aisina spoke at three area churches, Graceland Baptist and Holly Hills Baptist (Powhatan) and New Bethesda Baptist (Mechanicsville). Aisina’s talk included details about her childhood in Central Asia and the impact of receiving a shoebox from an American child. Prior to receiving her shoebox, Aisina lived with her mother and two sisters in a country that exhibited open hostility toward Christians. Her family suffered physical and mental abuse and had serious financial struggles as a result of their faith. While living in Central Asia, her mother received an invitation to a local church, with the caveat that she bring her children along. They made the journey on a cold, dark night. At the end

of the service, all of the children present proceeded to the front of the church. Once there, each child received a shoebox that had been packed for the appropriate age/gender. After a dramatic countdown, the children opened their boxes and, according to Aisina, “joyful chaos erupted! Aisina said that the room was filled with happiness and the new, colorful gifts overwhelmed the room. Her box included pink, glittery princess shoes and other things, but the most treasured gift was a picture of the little girl in the bottom of the box—the child that packed the box for her. Aisina, whose family could not afford to celebrate birthdays and holidays, simply could not believe that a total stranger would give her such a gift. The gift served as a tangible example of God’s love for her—it dramatically impacted her life.

PET of the WEEK Hello Everyone, My name is Rambo, I am around 5 years old, neutered, and up to date on my shots. I was given the name Rambo because I was strong, stout and reminded them of a famous movie star. I have been at the shelter since June 8, and nobody has even wanted to meet me. I really can’t understand why. Maybe it’s my size, breed or maybe everyone thinks I am too old. Well, I have some age, but that doesn’t slow me down. I love playing with toys and running around, but with my age I am also calmer and more obedient than the younger ones. I love pleasing my people, and I will do anything to make you smile. So come out and meet me. Hopefully I will be the addition you are looking for. You can call (804) 5985672 to schedule a time to meet me and also the other adoptable pets here.

Tibbs said. “This building was my middle school years ago ‌ so renovating and reusing the building is something that I am pleased to do and I enjoyed doing it. “You drive up and down highways all the time and see buildings that are dilapidated, the windows are busted out and things of that nature. I am just thankful that the county, the board of supervisors, the county administrator, and Dr. (Eric) Jones and the school board came to an agreement for us to do this, because I think it is a great use of the space, it is a great location,â€? he said. It’s worthwhile to bring back a farmers market By Laura McFarland Editor

I

t wasn’t in my plan that night to eat a booze infused dessert cake, but you never know what will happen at a farmers market. A few weeks ago, I heard about the RVAg Farm and Craft Pop-up Market, a pop-up farmers market being held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays in October in the parking lot of Three Crosses Distillery. I stopped by the market on Oct. 10, knowing if I could get a story in the following week’s paper, people still had two more opportunities to check out the event. And as this week’s edition comes out, our readers still have the chance to visit the market on Oct. 24 as well as a planned Small Business Saturday Pop-up Farm and Craft Market on Nov. 30 at the same location. The hours are still to be announced on the latter. I never had the chance to see the Powhatan Farmers Market when it was still located in the Village area. When it came on my radar, it had moved to the space in front of Tractor Supply. Then it moved again and was being held at Westchester Commons. Then it became the Westchester Farmers Market. Of course any kind of move is going to be accompanied by some criticism. People who are loyal to a farmers market and like the way things are don’t want to see

things change. I recognized the moves and changes were about increasing the market’s visibility and possible customer base. Customers need to be happy, but so too do the vendors who are relying on the sales. Still, I will admit to being sad when the farmers market left its Powhatan location out of necessity. That is why, when I heard about the pop-up markets, I was determined to be at the next one. In speaking with Lisa Dearden, executive director of RVAgriculture, the nonprofit running the markets, she told me the five-market series held in front of Three Crosses was a way to test the waters to see “whether Powhatan Village was ready for us to come back.” Dearden said the people in the Village were supportive in the first part of the series and she hoped the later events went as well to signal to organizers that people want this kind of market back in the Village area on a regular basis in 2020. Testing the waters is understandable. These markets take a great deal of planning and organization for the people in charge, and for the vendors, selling their wares could be an important source of income, if not their only source of income. Hopefully, the waters were favorable enough that the group decides to bring the market back for the entire season in 2020. Even if you can’t make it to the final markets this year, if you want this kind of venture back in the Village, reach out to

organizers and let them know (https://rvagriculture. org/). There are many reasons to support a local farmers market: fresh produce that is in season and didn’t have to travel across the country to get to your plate; supporting local farmers and small business owners who provide special goods; knowing where your food is coming from, and connecting with fellow community members who stop by for a visit. Personally and professionally, I like highlighting local farmers markets in the Powhatan Today because of what they represent – handmade, locally grown, locally sourced, etc. I like that you can stop at a market and find vendors selling products as varied as honey, meat, fresh produce, handmade fiber pieces, fresh bread, and, as mentioned above, delicious whiskey infused mini cakes made by Powhatan-based business Vanilla Bourbon Southern Desserts (using Three Crosses whiskey). I also appreciate that we live in a community where homes are often spaced so far apart and the main places people interact are at churches, festivals, and their children’s school and extracurricular activities. So, a farmers market offers a place to have laid back interactions with our neighbors and bring Powhatan closer as a community. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@ powhatantoday.com.

L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Asip brings passion, experience to issues Dear Editor, It takes courage, determination, and optimism to run for state delegate in a district that has been represented by one individual for the past 20 years. Powhatan resident Mike Asip possesses those qualities and more. Mike has been working tirelessly to meet with and introduce himself to voters of House of Delegates District 65, which includes parts of surrounding counties and all of Powhatan County. As a former special education teacher, middle school principal, and director of exceptional education for Chesterfield County Public Schools, Mike has been and continues to be a leader and determined advocate for students with disabilities and their families. Advocacy and social justice are part of Mike’s DNA. Mike has decided to run for state delegate because he passionately believes in social justice and equality, a strong public education system, access to health care for all, and strong environmental protections. Mike believes that medical care is a right and not just a privilege for those who can afford it. Mike has attended meetings and participated in activities with two organizations that are dedicated to opposing the mega-landfill planned in neighboring Cumberland County and preserving African-American history in the area. He joined community members who traveled to Richmond to address The Virginia Council on Environmental Justice as we spoke against the injustices being waged against the citizens of Cumberland and Powhatan counties, who will find themselves living near a noisy, noxious, polluting, and poisonous 1,200-acre industrial complex that is planned for Powhatan County’s border. Mike’s campaign relies on the generosity of time and money from family, friends, and community organization with which he has been associated. His campaign does not benefit from big dollar donations from corporations, businesses or lobbyists. Interested readers are referred to the Virginia Public Access Project (vpap.org) to see who is spending money to influence

the election in House of Delegates District 65. You won’t see donations from megalandfill corporations such as Waste Management or Republic Services on Mike Asip’s list of donors. Mike will work to balance the interests of families with those of employers. An article from the Sept. 3, 2019, issue of US News and World Report reports that “Virginia is Worst State for Worker’s Rights.” It’s time that focused attention be given to workers in the Commonwealth and, by extension, to their families. Mike will always put people first. Please vote Mike Asip for delegate on Nov. 5. Kevin Halligan Powhatan County

Brindley will open communication lines Dear Editor, When you vote in District 1 on Tuesday, Nov. 5, you will find Sandy Brindley’s name in the board of supervisors voting block. She is the Republican nominee for the position. I have known Sandy and her family for several years. I believe that she will represent everyone in District 1 whether they voted for her or not. Also, she will open up the lines of communication between her and her constituents. I sat on the board of supervisors for three terms. I know that Sandy has what it takes to do a great job. So vote for Sandy Brindley on Nov. 5. Roy Harrison Powhatan County

Farmers live simple but important lives Dear Editor, With the passing of Owen Walker, Powhatan lost the third lifelong farmer in recent weeks, including Hassel Osborne and Edward Tilman Sr. I recently found a poem written by Tennessee farmer Bobby Collier that I believe tells a fitting story of these men. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-730-0476

I’m Just a Farmer, Plain and Simple I’m just a farmer, Plain and simple. Not of a royal birth But rather, a worker of the earth. I know not of riches But rather, of patches on my britches I know of draught and rain, Of pleasure and pain. I know of the good and the bad, The happy and the sad. I am a man of emotions. A man who loves this land, And the beauty of its sand. I know of a spring’s fresh flow And autumn’s golden glow, Of a newborn calf’s hesitation, And the eagle’s destination. I know of tall pines, And long, waiting lines. Of the warmth of campfires, And the agony of flat tires. But I am a man who loves his job And the life I live. I am a man who works with God, I cannot succeed without his help, For you see, I’m just a farmer Plain and simple. May these stewards of the land rest in peace, because I’m just a farmer, plain and simple. Max Timberlake Jr. Powhatan County

Houses, townhouses, condos, apartments? East West has never been clear about their intent. The only specific has been 249 dwellings. With our high school at 92 percent functional capacity and all the other schools at +80 percent, we would need to seriously consider building new schools to accommodate the potential influx of students. The proposed restricted RCUT approach at Page Road and Route 60 is a disaster waiting to happen. Expecting residents to turn west, cut over two lanes of traffic (including many trucks) and then pull into the queue (which will most likely have landscape trucks and trailers from the business at 1331 Page Road), in order to go eastbound is insanity. This sounds so incredibly dangerous that it’s a guarantee that more traffic will opt for travelling west on Page Road to Carter Gallier Boulevard in order to go eastbound safely. It goes without saying that Page Road can’t handle a significant increase in traffic. The fact that the planning commission voted unanimously against this project should be reason enough for the board of supervisors to deny this project. Secondly, not one resident has spoken in favor of this development in all of the meetings and forums I have attended. It is not the right location, the right size or the right fit for Powhatan County at this time. Elaine Hall Powhatan County

Board should vote down development

Resident grateful for help of local deputies

Dear Editor, As a resident of District 1 in the Page Road/Route 60 area, I ask the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors to vote against the proposed Ellis Farm Development proposed by East West Communities. I am not opposed to smart growth and development in Powhatan County. I would welcome appropriate commercial growth to decrease the current 93 percent tax burden on residents. I have several concerns with the Ellis Farm development. I have attended all of the meetings and public forums, yet I’m still not sure what housing is to be built.

Dear Editor, So far fall has been very pleasant here, but a quick look at the calendar reminds me that harsh weather like last year may be coming again. Last year’s winder conditions put me into two dangerous, unsafe situations. I needed help and I called the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office. They were wonderful with their help to keep me safe. I am so very thankful I live in Powhatan and have this sheriff’s office to help me if I need it. Thank you Powhatan Sheriff’s Office for helping me. Jean Hutchison Powhatan County

programs, and setting up a foundation to accept funds to preserve open space and help parks and recreation. She said the supervisors and school board need to have more open dialogue and meet more often. She is currently a planning commissioner. Opponent Germando L. Harris’s top priorities are broadband, supporting quality education, improving public safety through better funding fire and rescue and the sheriff’s office, leadership, and diversifying housing. He suggested supporting the Ag Vision through methods such as zoning, conservation easements, and agribusiness. He talked about how his time as a school board member gives him insight and said the boards need to meet regularly.

School Board All school board members were asked about strategies to increase the number of African American, people of color and male teachers in Powhatan County Public Schools. They were also asked about increasing representation for black and brown students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), Advanced College Academy and dual enrollment programs. District 1 write-in candidate David Cole talked about using current staff who are minorities to help recruit, interacting with juniors at historically black colleges, and encourage current students to consider teaching. For the programs, he talked about starting education about them earlier than eighth grade and having more individual conversations with target audiences. He is a current board member and an educator and former principal and said his knowledge, experience and commitment to children would serve the citizens well again. Opponent Vicki Hurt talked about approaching historically black colleges, starting early teacher clubs at the high school, and recruiting military retirees. For the programs, she said that sort of education needs to start at an early age, through programs such as Head Start and teaching robotics, and educating parents. She is an educator of more than 35 years, is currently a robotics coach, and has coached many academic teams. District 2 candidate James L. Kunka emphasized the need for more minority teachers to help students as they prepare to enter the wide, diverse world. He

wants more diversity fairs and to continue to work on employee pay. He talked about having more role models enticing students into the programs. He is a current board member who works well with members of both boards, he said. Opponent Susan E. Smith also talked about sending out current representatives of male and minority teachers to attract more and mentioned enticing middle age people with good experience to switch careers. With the programs, she said a layering process needs to start early to challenge students’ critical thinking skills. She has taught in Powhatan for 26 years and emphasized stepping back to re-evaluate the district’s path, being mindful of all, intentionally teaching key life skills, and working together. District 3 candidate Valarie C. Ayers talked about using the talented male employees to recruit for the district, encouraging male minorities to consider teaching, and recruiting at colleges using current staff. For the programs, she emphasized personalized counseling to work with minority families to enter the program. She also talked about recruiting successful black mentors for the students to admire and emulate. She has been on the school board 24 years and has dedicated her life to the education of children, she said. Opponent David J. Mack said the schools need to talk with parents about putting more value on the education system and also using parental advocacy to convince students to enroll in programs that will challenge them but have great rewards. He is a lifelong learner and is involved with the schools through his two children and supporting their schools, he said. Candidates Joseph W. “Joe” Walters, District 4, and Kim M. Drew Hymel, District 5, are both incumbents running unopposed. In the interest of time, they simply talked about themselves. Walters has a background in law enforcement and believes that education is something that can’t be taken from people. Hymel has 21 years of teaching experience and said she has more things to accomplish as a school board member. Candidates not present at the event were Glen H. Sturtevant Jr. (Virginia Senate 10th District); David T. Williams (board of supervisors District 1); Michael W. Byerly (board of supervisors District 3); Richard K. “Dickie” Cox (commonwealth’s attorney); Faye G. Barton (treasurer), and James B. Timberlake II (commissioner of revenue).

Heart Secrets

Matthew 27:18 “For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.” The politically astute Pilate recognized envy when he saw it. Some sins are obvious in their harmfulness but some hide behind a veneer of respectability. Envy hides in the heart. It led to the crucifixion of the sinless Lord and Savior and it has led to the hurt of countless people through history and even today. Class envy spawned socialism and communism. Whether it is business, entertainment, family, politics, sports or neighbors – envy damages. Jesus died for your sin of envy. Will you repent and seek His forgiveness? (Acts 2:38)

BSH Football routs Quantico, 48-0 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Q

UANTICO - In Friday’s trip to Quantico, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Football won in old-school fashion, throwing and completing just one pass on the night while devastating their opponents 48-0 with a stonewalling defense and a dominant running game. Defensive end Khadeis Battle ruled his side of the field and delivered 5 tackles - “pretty soon they were running away from him,” BSH head coach Gary Brock said of Battle. Zach Miles and Chase Musselman were each in on three tackles, and linebackers Jack Hatfield, Ben Newton and Josh Decker were all instrumental in shutting down the home team. Brock noted how the Knights did a much better job gang-

tackling and circling in, resulting in several different players getting halftackles on the evening. Quantico tried to pass a number of times, but the Knights’ pass rush pressured the home team heavily. Quarterback Trevor Parker had an incendiary 21 yards per carry as he ran 6 times for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns, with offensive linemen Battle and Jack Milstead trapping and pulling to help him score. His sole pass, on 3rd and 7, traveled 10 yards over the middle on a slant to Zander Nadeau. All of a sudden, after Quantico had everyone bunched up in the front like most of the teams that the Knights are playing now, the home team’s players backed off a little bit. “Then after that, we just ran, ran, ran,” Brock said. Dom Falchi was also very effective in the ground game once more, extending his streak of games with a touch-

down to eight as he scored twice and ran 102 yards on 13 carries. “That’s something for him to be proud about,” Brock said of Falchi’s touchdown streak. “He’s getting some help from the offensive line, but he’s making good reads, too, so we’re real happy for him.” The Knights scored seven rushing touchdowns in all and led 21-0 after the first quarter. Nick Dawson and Josh Decker got their team going early on scores of 22 and 23 yards, respectively, and Parker took a trip to the house on a 63-yard romp. Falchi’s 15-yarder and another Parker touchdown, this one for 27 yards, made it 35-0 BSH at halftime. Falchi added a third-quarter goal line rush and 8th grader Hunter Case got on the scoreboard on a 10-yard run - he ran into the line, he picked an open hole and scampered in for the touchdown. The win lifted BSH to a winning re-

POWHATAN – When Powhatan Volleyball played at James River last month, it was Sierra Ellison’s first time missing a season game due to an ankle injury that would sideline her for multiple weeks. But when James River came to Powhatan High School for the Indians’ Pink Out Game on Oct. 16, it was Ellison’s first game back in full. She showed as much. The senior DePaul commit dove for digs, hammered fiery kills past the opposition and served for 14 straight points to help Powhatan complete its season sweep of James River (2514, 25-9, 16-25, 27-25). “It felt good – I was happy to be back because I was gone for 4 weeks,” Ellison said. “It took a little while to…get back into the swing see VOLLEYBALL, pg. 2B

Powhatan’s Aaron Nash rushed for two touchdowns and threw for a third in the Indians’ loss to Monacan.

POWHATAN – Speed and big plays led Monacan past Powhatan 55-28 on Powhatan’s Homecoming on Oct. 18. “They’re an excellent football team,” Powhatan head coach Mike Henderson said of Monacan while having added: “This isn’t like we’re playing up two divisions – this team’s in our division. They just beat us soundly in every facet of the football game and we told our guys right there: we’ve got to figure out a way to get better.” For Powhatan, Aaron Nash carried the ball 7 times for 60 yards and two

touchdowns, and he threw for 52 yards and completed 4 of 7 passes, including a fourth-quarter, 30-yard touchdown that he aired out to receiver and track standout Anthony Greenhow in the left corner of the end zone. Hans Rehme, who switched-off at quarterback with Nash throughout the contest, completed 9 of 17 passes for 85 yards and added 18 yards and a goal-line score on 5 carries. Running back Mitchell Johnson carved up chunks of yardage for firstdown gains early and finished with 60 yards on 14 carries. Nate Moyer hauled in 8 receptions for 54 yards and Tye Morris had 3 catches for 47 yards.

of things, I had been out for so long.” “I was super proud of her,” Powhatan head coach Cindy Bryant said of Ellison. “She came out swinging hard, making smart shots – just the Sierra that we know and depend on.” Ellison double-doubled with 13 kills and 14 digs while rolling out 5 aces and adding a block. She delivered a kill along the left sideline in the second set that sent her back to serve with her team up 13-9. She never stopped serving that set, helping her team go unanswered for the 25-9 win and extending her serving streak by two more points into the third stanza. She excelled at spot-serving, and she would alternate between going deep-float and short serve to catch her opponents off-guard. She also found open spaces to deliver her midstrength roll shots – in between the lighter dinks and her more powerful attacks – to pick up points for her team. Her teammate, senior Star Bryant, delivered an assist, 3 digs, 4 blocks and 10 kills, including a laser off a comebacker from the Rapids as well as a smartly placed short attack into the shallow corner to keep the Indians in the mix in a competitive fourth set. Sophomore Bryson Amorese

The 17th Annual Golf Tournament for Habitat For Humanity - Powhatan was held on Sept. 27 at the scenic Mill Quarter Golf Course in Powhatan. According to Roseleen Rick, Habitat’s executive director, it was the most successful Habitat tournament yet with 78 players. “The weather was perfect, the scores were low, and the players had a great time!” Rick said. There were lots of contest win-

ners for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and hole in one. No one won the $10,000 hole in one, but a few people came close. The 50/50 raffle ticket sales were shared 50 percent by the raffle winner, and 25 percent by the Sheriff’s office Triad program and 25 percent by Habitat For Humanity - Powhatan. The winner of the raffle received over $900. In addition to sponsors, many vendors helped make the tournament memorable. Wildwood Bar B Que provided lunch, Harrison Photography LLC took photos of the

event and Mill Quarter Golf Plantation provided a wonderful venue. All of the proceeds will be used by Habitat to help provide safe and sanitary housing for its Powhatan neighbors. Habitat’s critical repair program works with many families in Powhatan to do repairs that include roofing, plumbing, ceiling, drywall and mold problems, and bathroom access. Habitat finished House 13 in June and is working to complete House 14. With support and contributions from many, it hopes to build another house in 2020.

honed in on the ball for 31 assists, sophomore Kendal McMullin continued her strong play of late with 5 digs against the Rapids and Natalie Mueller added 2 digs and 1 block to 8 kills, including a kill for matchpoint. Sophomore Faith Henderson made timely plays including a dink to set up Mueller’s decisive kill.

Powhatan routs Clover Hill in straight sets on Senior Night The four seniors epitomized their on-court roles Thursday night. McKenna Adams delivered reliable defense and made big dives to keep points alive, Zoe Higley continued to make timely, smart kills and Star Bryant and Sierra Ellison unleashed their versatility and devastating power across Powhatan’s straight-sets victory (25-8, 2514, 25-11) over Clover Hill on Senior Night. “It was super fun,” Higley said of their Senior Night game, adding of her teammates: “I’m glad to have played with all them throughout these years.” With Thursday night’s dominant win, Star described it as a night where they could “just be teammates and bond together as a team.” “Great night to come out, let all the seniors play all their roles and let them be able to stay on the court, and they played well – all our seniors did well,” said

Powhatan’s offense tonight enjoyed its best first half production-wise since playing George Wythe in its second game of the regular season; Rehme and his offensive line pushed forward for a goal-line touchdown at the end of a drive featuring his 39-yard rocket of a pass to Morris down the left field sideline, and athletic Aaron Nash in the second quarter dashed 20 yards around the right side to cap a drive set up by a punt that followed Zach Karanian’s 10-yard sack of

day, Oct. 15. Smiles were in abundance and the mood was light as the senior girls faced the junior girls on the gridiron for bragging rights. Alas for the juniors, it was a onesided affair, as the seniors rolled past them 34-0 behind a home-run-hitting night from Arnell Jackson.

Powhatan head volleyball coach Cindy Bryant, for whom it was an especially touching night, as her daughter Star has been part of 7 seasons that Coach Bryant has coached. Ellison varied the strength of her team-leading 16 kills – ranging from surefire winners to lighter dinks and high-arching roll shots – and added six digs. Star Bryant delivered 2 aces, 8 kills, 2 digs and a block. She also crushed the set winner on a floating comebacker in the second set. Adams picked up 8 digs in Thursday’s contest. On one huge defensive play, she dove for a ball and hit to send it over the net and just inside Clover Hill’s left sideline to pick up an insurance point for Powhatan at 13-11 in the second set. Adams,

also a leading player on her tennis team, added two aces to her night. Having a good toss is essential to a good serve, Adams pointed out, and with tennis, she noted, you’ve got to be able to toss it high for a good serve as well. Higley had one dig to go along with her strategicallyplaced four kills on the evening. “I study the court to figure out where the open spots are,” Higley said, “and then I just figure out what to do to place them in those spots to get those kills.” With two games spread across the next two weeks – Manchester on Tuesday, Oct. 22 (7 p.m.) and fellow TimesDispatch Top 10 team Patrick Henry on Wednesday, Oct. 30 (7 p.m.) – Powhatan expects to “get lots of practice in and lots of disciplined work towards

Monacan’s quarterback. “I thought we played a little bit better offensively tonight,” Henderson said, while adding that, when facing a high-powered offense with a lot of speed, they “need to find a way to put a few more scores out there and we weren’t able to do it.” Both of Powhatan’s touchdowns tied the game early – the latest near the 6-minute mark of the second quarter – after Monacan went ahead 7-0 and 14-7. But a 20-point explosion fueled by big plays put the Chiefs in command at the half. Defensively for Powhatan, Isaac Trent and Chase Gayness each racked up 8 tack-

The track star dropped the hammer early, taking a handoff around the left side and then sprinting to the house on an incendiary 80-yard run, which she would quickly follow-up with a twopoint conversion to make it 8-0. what we know lies ahead of us,” noted Coach Bryant. One of the glowing attributes of Powhatan (14-2), ranked #6 by the Times-Dispatch, is that the team boasts the best of both worlds, with young talent both excelling and showing promise behind the four seniors. Sophomore setter Bryson Amorese delivered yet another consistent statline with 30 assists, and sophomore Nina Marsho, who like Ellison endured an ankle injury this year, flexed her power on a crushing kill late in the game. One of JV’s players early in the year, sophomore Faith Henderson, got pulled up to varsity and has been a starter on varsity since then. “We’re excited about the depth of volleyball in Powhatan,” Coach Bryant said.

les including 6 solo efforts each, with Trent getting a tackle for a loss. TJ Gates made 7 tackles including 5 assists. Wyatt Lowe and Tristen Bradley each made 6 tackles including 1 for a loss, with Lowe getting 4 solo efforts and Bradley making 4 assists. Karanian made the booming 10-yard sack to set up Nash’s first scoring drive of the game, and Josh Jordan and Ethan Dowdy each made 3 solo tackles. In playing standout teams like Monacan and Manchester – whom Powhatan will see – Henderson said that “you see where you need to be.” Powhatan plays at Manchester High School on Friday, Oct. 25, 7 p.m.

conversion later in the game, and she was just as effective on defense, rolling out multiple sacks including one to force a turnover on downs. Senior basketball player Macie Tiller turned a first-half interception into a trip to the end zone for a pick-six, and multi-sport standout Michala Taylor scored a rushing touchdown, made a two-point conversion and caught an interception on defense.

The juniors came their closest to breaking onto the scoreboard late in the first half on a huge passing play, but they were stopped just shy of the goal line as time expired. The two teams’ coaching staffs included players from Powhatan Football, and senior boys and junior boys comprised the two teams’ cheer squads. The Powder Puff Football Game raised funds for the SCA.

Powhatan Middle School Soccer wins semifinal By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN – When a Powhatan player had the ball on Thursday, he or she could count on a teammate being nearby to support them or pick up the pass. “That’s overall team effort – the way we practice, the way we preach,” middle school head coach Willie Miles said after the game. That team effort was reflected in the final score, as six different players scored goals for Powhatan Middle School Soccer in its 7-0 win over Prince Edward in the Southside Middle School Conference tournament semifinals.

Powhatan’s victory ensures that it will host either Bluestone or Park View – whom Powhatan defeated the prior Monday in its regular season finale, 6-1 – in the championship game on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 4:30 p.m. at Powhatan Middle School. “Truly, this group, I’m very blessed to have because they are of all ages – it’s development for the future obviously for the high school program,” said Miles, who is also a coach at the high school. “But at the same time, it’s a great group of kids and just blessed to have them, and they play the right way. They take care of business and they play their game.” After Prince Edward’s goalie played stonewalling defense to open Thurs-

day’s semifinal matchup, Powhatan’s Cole Donnelly finished off a ball that the goalie deflected off of a hard kick from a Powhatan teammate; Brayden Elzey afterward hammered a big shot that zoomed through the goalie’s legs, and Brandon Vallant kneed in a corner kick while airborne to give Powhatan a 3-0 lead at halftime. From there, Evan Sargent outpaced the goalie to send the ball into the net, Logan Thompson smashed a deep ball from the right side into the top right corner, Pierce Vandell launched a shot above the leaping goalie and into the top-shelf netting and Sargent had his second goal of the contest cross the threshold. These young players are very accountable of each other and of them-

selves, Miles pointed out, and he commends them for that. For the coach, this team has been a joy overall. “It’s all just fun-loving kids,” he said. “They love to be here, and that makes the job a lot easier….they love the game. It’s truly a special thing to see, and I couldn’t do it without them, the parents – Coach [Jessica Minnix] my assistant is an all-star…she stepped into this role, it’s her first year coaching but man ol’ man, she’s acted like a head coach from the start all the way to the finish, so it’s been [a blessing] to see that.” The team has yet to lose this season, winning 15 times and tying twice in 17 games played thus far.

2019 ELECTION GUIDE

Registrar confident in security By Laura McFarland Editor

POWHATAN – Powhatan residents who cast their ballots in the General Election on Nov. 5 can rest assured that their votes are secure, director of elections Karen Alexander recently told county leaders. Alexander spoke to the

Powhatan County Board of Supervisors at its meeting on Sept. 23 to explain what measures her office and the state as a whole take to keep the election process secure in the county. With election security, three main topics hit the news the most: physical security, cyber security, and procedural security,

Delegate Lee Ware is also one of our legislative leaders. He is chairman of the important House Finance Committee, so he is at the helm in shaping all-important tax and revenue policies. And, he is a ranking member on the influential Rules Committee and the committees on Commerce & Labor, and Agriculture, Chesapeake, & Natural Resources. And, he chaired the first joint subcommittee called to help expand wireless services. Delegate Ware also serves on important commissions, including Civics Education, Coal & Energy, Employee Retirement Security and Pension Reform, Health Insurance Reform, Small Business, Unemployment Compensation, and Water, and he is a trustee of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. Committed, deliberative, courteous, and cheerful—these are some of the qualities that have earned Delegate Ware these commendations: *endorsed for re-election by our teachers’ association VEA Fund

Alexander said, before explaining how Powhatan addresses those issues. “We go to great lengths to make sure that our board and our residents and our voters all know that elections are safe in Powhatan County,” she said. She assured the board that “every vote in Powhatan County will count and our elections are secure.”

Physical security

We citizens of Powhatan are privileged to be represented in the House of Delegates by one of the most principled, thoughtful, and effective legislators in Virginia. He is devoted to our communities, he has helped countless of our neighbors, and he works closely with civic and fraternal associations and with our Supervisors and School Board. He votes with conviction and deliberation, and he cooperates “across the aisle” when need be for the good of the Commonwealth. And, he taught History and Government to our children for three decades.

Powhatan County’s voting machines, poll books and ballots are all: stored in an unadvertised location; secured under multiple locks and keys, individually secured under additional caged lock and key access; protected by ports that are secured with multiple coded seals; under password protection; keys to the locks are hidden and under further lock and key, which are also hidden, and all passwords are encrypted and change every 30 days. Only two people (who are under oath) have access to these secure items, Alexander and her assistant,

2019 ELECTION GUIDE

Frequently asked election questions What will be on my ballot? The purpose of this election is to choose candidates for the offices of Member Senate of Virginia for the 10th Congressional District, Member House of Delegates for the 65th Congressional District, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Sheriff, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer, Member Board of Supervisors for Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, Member School Board for Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and Soil and Water Conservation Directors for Monacan District. To see a copy of your Sample Ballot, go to powhatanva. gov and search under County Departments for the Voter Registrar’s webpage. http://www.powhatanva.gov/310/VoterRegistrar

Will I be voting on paper and using the scanner? Each voter in Powhatan County will be given a paper ballot on which to cast their votes. Each of the nine offices to be voted on will be listed on the front of one 8 ½ X 11 paper ballot. Each of the five voting districts will have individualized ballots. You will need to completely fill in the oval beside the candidate(s) you are voting for (do not “√” or “x” through the oval). You do not have to vote in every race if you do not want to. If you make a

Jamie Swemba. “Before every election, we test each and every voting machine and poll book. The voting machines are tested to make sure that they are programmed correctly and that they count every vote as they should. That process is observed by the electoral board and members that are appointed from each political party,”

mistake, ask the nearest poll worker to get you another ballot before you cast the incorrect ballot. Once you place your ballot into the optical scanner machine, the vote is officially cast and cannot be repealed.

What do I do if there are no candidates listed on the ballot for a particular race or if I don’t want to choose any of the candidates who are listed? Voters have an option to write-in a candidate of their choice. To do this, the voter needs to legibly write the name of a qualified candidate who they wish to vote for on the “write in” line. Then they must completely fill-in the oval located to the right of the write-in line. If that oval is not marked, then the write-in vote will not be read and counted by the scanner.

What are some of the important dates people need to know in terms of this year’s election? Deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is Tuesday, Oct. 29. We do NOT offer early voting. However, absentee voting is being offered now for registered voters with qualifying reasons who will not be able to make it to the polls on Alexander said. “So, it is a very intricate, all-day, very detailed process, but at the end of that, we are assured that our voting machines are calibrated and work the way that they are supposed to.”

Cyber security The database of all registered voters is maintained and secured by the Virginia Department of Elections (ELECT), Alexander said. Access to

Nov. 5. Absentee voting is being offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Office of Elections and Voter Registration, located in the Village Building (3910 Old Buckingham Road, Suite E, Lower Level). Absentee voting will also be offered between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 2. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone present in line by 7 p.m. will be permitted to vote. Curbside voting is also available during absentee voting and also on Election Day. Call the Office of Elections for details at 804-598-5604.

Are there any common questions that the Office of Elections gets during election season? You will be required to submit an acceptable form of Photo ID when you check in at the polls this year. If you do not have one, the registrar can make one for you free of charge in the Office of Elections. Acceptable forms of photo ID include the following: Valid Virginia driver’s license; DMV-issued photo identification card (from Virginia); Valid United States passport; Valid Virginia Em-

ployee photo identification card; Other governmentissued photo identification card; or Valid college, university or high school student photo identification card (issuer must be a recognized institution of education located in Virginia).

partment of Elections Website. All absentee ballot applications must be received, at the very latest, by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Call the Office of Elections if you have questions about your registration status, polling precinct location, or Voter

ID Law requirements. Double-check these details by calling 804-598-5604 BEFORE Election Day.

What do you want people to know in terms of what they need to bring to the polls? It is mandatory that you bring a valid PHOTO ID (see list above) Bring patience and a cooperative attitude. The busiest time for voting is first thing in the morning from 6 to 9 a.m. If at all possible, avoid voting during these times. If you must vote during that time, anticipate a potential wait in line…so bring your patience with you to the polls!

If you are not going to be in the county on Nov. 5, what should you do? VOTE ABSENTEE either by mail or in-person! To vote absentee, a registered voter must complete a Virginia Absentee Ballot Application, a copy of which can be picked-up from the Office of Elections or downloaded from the Virginia DePaid Political Advertisement

every year and is also an active member of the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) for elections infrastructure advisories.

Procedural security All voting machines are extensively tested for logic and accuracy prior to each election, Alexander said. There is no remote Wi-Fi access to the county’s voting machines or poll books, so no hacking. Powhatan uses paper ballots instead of touchscreen electronic voting machines so that the paper ballots can be used in the case of recounts or accusations of foul play. Only Alexander and Swemba, who are extensively trained and tenured staff members under oath, have access to passwords and keys, as well as the registration database, poll books and voting machines. ELECT reviews and approves the county office’s security protocol annually, she said. Emergency management and the sheriff’s office work closely with the office of elections to establish and employ emergency planning for Election Day. The Electoral Board is made up of members from both major political parties to help ensure integrity of elections. Likewise, all election officials are assigned to work at precincts based on equal and alternate political party affiliation to help en-

Voter security Photo identification is mandatory for people to vote, which is an added way to make sure a citizen’s vote is secure, Alexander said. If someone comes to vote and finds they are not in the poll book, there is usually a reason for that, she added. Sometimes they have gone to the wrong precinct. Everyone

is assigned to a precinct and can only vote there. “In most cases we can figure out within minutes where they are supposed to be voting and re-direct them. More than likely they moved from another county and forget to update their voter registration. We hope that they have come to the polls early enough to be able to go back to their previous locality to vote, and we get them updated so that by the next election they don’t

have that issue, she said.

Board questions After her presentation, Alexander answered several questions asked by board members. Carson Tucker, who represents District 5, asked if the office of elections has ever detected anyone or any entity “sniffing around trying to get into our system. Alexander said the state board of elections is “very aware of multi-state

As a former teacher and mom of four‌ I believe our schools are Powhatan’s most important investment for the future. As a former software trainer and strategic marketer in the high tech industry‌ I believe building an infrastructure that provides broadband to all citizens must be a top priority for Powhatan’s leaders. As a business and community leader‌ I will provide leadership focused on cutting through bureaucratic red tape and building positive relationships to foster collaboration between Powhatan’s elected officials, county employees, school district, and members of the community. hacking efforts that were made during the presidential election. On a local level that was not an issue, but in other states there was infiltration. Powhatan is secure, but Alexander warned the board that with the introduction of no excuse absentee voting in 2020 for the presidential election, there may be more security efforts that need to be put in place at that time. Chairwoman Angie

Cabell, District 3, asked Alexander questions about personnel and training. Alexander said the county employs anywhere from 60 to 130 election officials for elections, depending on the expected turnout. They are under oath and are trained prior to every election.
