Powhatan supervisors vote 3-2 to adopt Second Amendment Sanctuary designation By Laura McFarland Editor

P

OWHATAN – The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors recently decided in a split vote to pass a resolution declaring Powhatan a Second Amendment Sanctuary county. In front of a packed house during the board’s meeting on Monday, Nov. 25 at the Village Building, the supervisors voted 3-2 in favor of adopting a resolution that vows opposition to potential bills being proposed for the next General Assembly session that supporters say would infringe on their Second Amendment rights. Chairwoman Angie Cabell, who represents District 3, Larry Nordvig, District 2, and Bill Melton, District 4, voted to pass a resolution brought forward

during the meeting by Jean Gannon, chairwoman of the Powhatan County Republican Committee. The resolution Gannon presented took a stronger stance than one the board was originally considering, which discussed the supervisors’ oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution without specifically seeking to adopt a Second Amendment Sanctuary designation. David Williams, District 1, and Carson Tucker, District 5, while both voicing support of the Second Amendment, voted against the resolution. They had asked the board to hold a workshop with Powhatan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Dickie Cox and Sheriff Brad Nunnally to help the board and the public understand what being a Second Amendment see VOTE, pg. 3

During a visit to the Free Clinic of Powhatan, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger speaks with staff and volunteers to learn more about what they do.

By Laura McFarland Editor

POWHATAN – Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, D7th, paid a visit to the Free Clinic of Powhatan last week as part of a two-day health carerelated tour in the region. Spanberger visited the clinic on Monday, Nov. 25 for a tour and a chance to talk to staff and volunteers about how they help people in Powhatan County and beyond who otherwise couldn’t afford health care. Executive director Connie Moslow introduced Spanberger to the Free Clinic and what it does, who it helps, and how things will change once it

moves into its new location on Skaggs Road in 2020. She talked about the medical services the clinic helps people get access to as well as dental care and mental health services. Moslow said she was happy to have the politician visit to increase awareness of the free clinics in Virginia and how they impact small communities like Powhatan when there is no other place to go. “I think she got that. I think she saw the need and all of the many services we provide, not just a doctor’s service. If she got that, I would be happy,” Moslow said. One of the points Moslow discussed with Spanberger was

Sanctuary means and how it would be enforced. The board’s actions come on the heels of decisions made by other counties in Virginia and states around the nation to adopt a Second Amendment Sanctuary designation. In Virginia, the movement started to gather steam after democrats won control of the General Assembly in the 2019 General Election. Some of the other localities that have also passed similar sanctuary resolutions include Giles,

surrounding the Second Amendment with 14 out of the 15 comments made on that subject. The period started with Gannon’s presentation of her alternative resolution and the reasons she was asking the board to support it.

Gannon’s resolution reiterated the right to bear arms, as guaranteed by the Constitution, and then addressed proposed legislation and language of support from Governor Ralph Northam “that is unconstitutional as it pertains to the rights enumer-

time to get a job done, bumping him up to $18,000. That knocked out his eligibility, which was now over 200 percent of the poverty level. “At 200 percent you are dirt poor. At 250 percent you are still dirt poor but it allowed more people to come to the Free Clinic,” she said. Spanberger said the intention of her visit was to better understand what the local community is doing, learn about some of the stories of the health care needs and impact within her area from the clinic, and hear possible specific takeaways of what can be done from a federal perspective. “There is an interesting challenge as the clinic has been able to expand who it serves because of Medicaid Expansion changing the poverty level of patients they are seeing. It was just brought to my attention that in fact hospital systems who frequently work with charity care providers, that

there is a concern related to federal law of whether or not they can change their poverty levels to meet what the local clinic has. I would have never been aware of that. That is not something that has been raised to me recently,” Spanberger said. The Free Clinic and its work are valuable resources that highlight the importance of preventative health care and being able to see a doctor or dentist before a person is walking through the doors of an emergency room because he or she couldn’t afford to manage a

chronic condition, Spanberger said. It is an issue that touches not only the patient’s life but also the larger economy. “Visits to clinics like Powhatan and hearing some of the first-hand stories, it affirms for me the fact that health care continues to be the No. 1 issue for people across our district, be they insured through an employer or be they using the services of a free clinic like this one,” she said. Moslow also talked with the congresswoman about how issues such as lack of

transportation for a patient to receive services or being unable to afford a prescription have impacted how the clinic operates to be able to help them. The clinic has an excellent working relationship with Walmart to purchase prescription medicines for its patients and also has a prescription assistance program (PAP) to work with pharmaceutical houses to get discounts on expensive prescription drugs. Depending on the needs of that year, the clinic has spent anywhere from $17,000 up to $40,000 a year on prescription medicines, Moslow said. When asked about how what she learned on the visit might translate into Spanberger’s priorities moving forward, she pointed to the issue of cost prohibitive prescriptions and how it causes people to make the “decision of when to pick up a life-saving medication that they need or not.” Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

may withhold funding because we stand tall to support our Constitution is not only wrong, but it is illegal, especially in light of the quid-pro-quo inquiries we have been exposed to for the past two weeks, she said. Gannon’s speech was met with a standing ovation from the majority of the room and followed by a variety of comments along the same lines. Resident Steve Jenkins read a small portion of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He denounced legislators’ plans to “infringe on our liberties and asked the board to declare their intention to “honor, respect, defend, and affirm our founding document and, more specifically, “our right to

bear arms. Cecil Youngblood said individuals must stand up and keep the right to bear arms to protect Powhatan from turning into something it isn’t. Citizens have to have guns, keep them, and use them responsibly, he said. “This county has to stand strong to protect the rights of the citizens who make this country a great country. We want to be a county that stands tall, he said. Jake Florence talked about moving to Powhatan about a year and a half ago and finding Powhatan a special place to live. “It feels so much freer out here – so open and rural and it just feels perfect. I think that is something we need to preserve. I think that is what this 2A sanction is about – we

need to stand up for it and you the good members of our board are the line of defense that we are depending on right now, he said. Richard Brown said when it comes to the Second Amendment, gun rights are often equated with hunting. The Second Amendment is not about hunting or sport; “it is about my life, my liberty. It is about all these people’s liberty.

‘Watered down’ About 40 minutes into the meeting, the board’s discussion about this issue started with Melton pointedly asking Nordvig why he “felt like he needed to have a watered down version in our packet. The resolution that Nordvig proposed and that was in the board packet available to the public was focused on “reaffirming the Powhatan Board of Supervisors’ commitment to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. It listed some of the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights that the board would commit to uphold, including “being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, “nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. Nordvig explained he “wanted something quick because of the movement gaining momentum in Virginia in response to what he considers “deeply disturbing bills that have been prefiled in Richmond, Virginia, inexcusable in my opinion. He said he did not have access to the templates circling around regarding a Second Amendment Sanctuary

designation but he didn’t want to be silent. Nordvig said he is personally in support of being a Second Amendment Sanctuary and had signed a petition Gannon circulated regarding the resolution. But he said he respects the right of the new and coming board to fully understand the meaning and implications of the sanctuary resolution. Some of Nordvig’s comments would be echoed by Williams and Tucker, who both called for a workshop on the topic to include the existing board, incoming board members, and Nunnally and Cox. Williams repeatedly stressed the desire to have a better understanding of what the designation means and what they would be asking of local law enforcement in regard to how they uphold the laws passed by the General Assembly. He pointed out the lack of a singular definition or parameters for the designation or the long-term impacts of trying to live by it. In talking with people about the issue, Williams said he found everyone had slightly different interpretations of what the designation did or didn’t do. “Some people thought it would be a complete nullification of any laws that are enacted down at the General Assembly that we don’t like – that weaken our Second Amendment rights. That is not the case. So, I think it is very important that we have that workshop within the public where we go through, OK, if they do pass, for example the Red Flag law, how is that going to be either ignored or is it going to be served by the sheriff? What exactly is going to happen with your constitutional officers, he said. He also cautioned that if the board did take ac-

tion that citizens didn’t go home “and think that you’ve got certain protections that you might not have. Tucker pointed out that everyone agrees in principle Powhatan is a Second Amendment county and they are just arguing over specific pieces of that. He suggested endorsing Nordvig’s resolution, which he called a “temporary template, and agreed with Williams’ suggestion of a workshop held no later than Dec. 31. “This is a weighty issue with passionate advocates and we need not only do our own due diligence but we need not to react just to emotional aspects of the issue. We must ask what we are getting ready to do and what the longterm consequences thereof might be, Tucker said.

‘Loud and clear message’ Meanwhile, Melton and Cabell from the start took strong stances to support Gannon’s suggested resolution in its cry to make Powhatan a Second Amendment Sanctuary. Melton commended Nordvig for beginning the process with his resolution but argued the board needed “to send a loud and clear message now. Melton proposed the board adopt Gannon’s resolution but amend it to add some of the language from Nordvig’s resolution regarding upholding the Bill of Rights. “I truly agree with the citizens here tonight that we need to send a loud and clear message now and that we should not wait for the next board to have to deal with this, Melton said. Cabell said her concern with Nordvig’s resolution is that it did not address the use of public funds or any legal means, which are both mentioned in Gannon’s resolution.

“I think that if you want to talk about substantive and effect for maximum impact, you talk about money and law. So, if we do truly want to be substantive and effective for maximum impact, then I think we should support the resolution that Jean Gannon has brought us, she said. Although she didn’t think adding language from Nordvig’s resolution was necessary, Cabell seconded Melton’s motion to approve the resolution mentioning the sanctuary status.

Tipping the scales The discussion continued between the board members with them essentially repeating their arguments for a workshop and gathering more information versus immediately adopting the sanctuary status. The issue came to a head right before the vote when Nordvig, who was visibly conflicted, ultimately decided to support the sanctuary designation. Nordvig regularly makes the argument that the residents of Powhatan are the supervisors’ bosses so the board members need to listen to what they have to say. When he voted in favor of Gannon’s resolution, he said he thinks it is a “good idea to drill down deeper into this. However, the people who spoke and came out in support of the sanctuary designation convinced him to vote in favor of it, he said. At the end of the meeting, three citizens stood up and said they were glad the board of supervisors passed the sanctuary resolution. However, each man asked the board to continue with the proposal Williams and Tucker pushed for – to have a workshop to fully flush out and discuss this issue with the constitutional officers who would be charged with upholding that task.

Powhatan woman charged with hanging puppy Editor

POWHATAN – A local woman has become the first person charged in Powhatan County for felony animal cruelty under Tommie’s Law after she told authorities she killed her ex-boyfriend’s 10-month-old dog by hanging it with an extension cord, officials say. Yasmine Burton, 21, of Powhatan County was charged on Friday, Nov. 22 with felony cruelty to animals and grand larceny after she allegedly took the dog from her former boyfriend’s home in Dinwiddie County, brought it to her house in Powhatan and killed it, said Rob Cerullo, deputy commonwealth’s attorney. Burton initially came to the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office and reported that her ex-boyfriend’s dog, Choppo, a 10-monthold pit bull, had passed

away of unknown causes in the back yard of her residence, Cerullo said. She told deputies that the animal had been ill and acting strangely for the prior two days that she had been watching the dog, he said. “At first she came to the sheriff’s department to report that the dog was dead, and she made it sound like the dog died of natural causes. I guess she just wanted them to know for whatever reason,” Cerullo said. However, when animal control officers responded to the home and found the body of the animal in the woods behind the residence, they determined the dog may have died under suspicious circumstances and began an investigation, Cerullo said. During that investigation, Burton became a suspect in the death of the animal. During an interview

with deputies, Burton “made statements indicating that she was responsible for the death of the animal,” Cerullo said. Burton claimed her ex-boyfriend was abusive and she took his dog without permission. She told investigators she used a household extension cord to hang the animal from a tree in the rear of her residence “because of the way her exboyfriend had treated her,” Cerullo said. A law went into effect July 1 that stiffened the penalty for animal cruelty, making it a Class 6 Felony. The law addresses situations where a person “cruelly and unnecessarily beats, maims, or mutilates any dog or cat that is a companion animal” and the animal dies. The new law was dubbed Tommie's Law in honor of the dog who died after being tied to a pole

Powhatan UMC kicks off holiday season with Community Christmas Breakfast Contributed Report

1033686-01

Powhatan United Methodist Church is inviting the public to welcome the start of the holiday season with an oldfashioned Community Christmas Breakfast. The church, located at 2253 Rosson Road, Powhatan, will hold the event from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The congregation invites people to celebrate the season and travel to Bethlehem to visit the manger where Jesus was born. For the past six months, the church has invited local residents to a free community breakfast on the first Saturday of each month. It has been a wonderful time of fellowship together. The congregation promises the December breakfast will be much more. A few snowflakes, some cookie crumbs, sparkling lights, and familiar music have reminded us Christmas is coming. Pull out the decorations and let’s celebrate the birthday of the

SECOND ANTIOCH BAPTIST CHURCH

Christ child. Each year we look forward to spending time with family and friends and having the opportunity to see Christmas through the eyes of our children. On Dec. 7, as always, breakfast will be delicious! Guests will find the usual pancakes and sides with some special treats added. Christmas music and a craft table for kids (of all ages) will help make the season bright. A few crumbs on the floor will show the way to the Christmas Cookie station— there will be yummy sugar cookies to decorate, with some to eat and some to take home. As the children’s Shepherd Parade visits the manger, join in singing familiar carols and hearing the story of what happened in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago, the event we still celebrate today. There will be photo opportunities for children and families at the Nativity Scene. This community event is free to all, compliments of Powhatan UMC.

and set on fire in Richmond's Abner Clay Park in February. Burton was arraigned on Wednesday, Nov. 27 and was being held in Piedmont Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond. The sheriff’s office is still trying to locate Burton’s ex-boyfriend. Authorities are also waiting on the results of a necropsy on the dog to confirm its cause of death. It will be performed by the Virginia Department of General Services.

Cumberland County Cumberland Christmas Parade set for Dec. 8 By Laura McFarland Editor

C

UMBERLAND –The 2019 Cumberland Christmas Parade will bring its own brand of holiday cheer to the village of Cumberland County Courthouse. After a few years where weather canceled the holiday event, organizers are hoping it will come back stronger than ever this weekend. The parade will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 and feature community civic organizations, civic groups, businesses and more, all wanting to spread a little Christmas cheer, said Barbara Gamage, one of the organizers. This year’s theme is once again “A Cumberland County Christmas – Caring and Sharing,” embracing the idea that Cumberland’s residents know the importance of looking out for each other, Gamage said. The last two years the parade was canceled because of bad weather, so Cumberland hasn’t been able to have a

parade. That is why organizers decided to use the same theme, she said. People love to see the creatively decorated floats, car clubs, different animals, fire engines and ambulances, and local bands performing special music. “It is something that has been historic here for years. I think people look for-

ward to it. The kids love it. I just think it is something we need to do if there is any way possible, so we are trying again,” she said. Entries were slow coming in during November, but Gamage said she hopes several would come in this week to round out the festive event.

Exercise caution this holiday season By Laura McFarland Editor

A

few years ago I made a bad choice. I was visiting my family in Houston, Texas, and, for some reason, my mom, my nephew, and I decided to go for a walk at a local park. I don’t know what got into us, but we made the ultimate stupid move and left valuables in the car that were visible. The next thing I know, someone is approaching us and telling us about a car with broken windows. I rushed to the car, and, sure enough, the stuff was gone. The list of items stolen included my wallet, which, aside from the issue of canceling credit cards, had me extremely worried about how I was going to get on a plane without a valid photo ID. It was a painful life lesson about being aware of your surroundings and making smart choices with your belongings and yourself. I was reminded of this unfortunate incident the other day because of a PSA provided by the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers about safety tips during the holiday season. The PSA was all about remembering that – even as we are entering into a season of goodwill and helping others – there are those who would seek to take advantage of your inattention and distraction. I highly recommend our local families look at the full list on the agency’s Facebook page or seek out similar lists just to jog our memories or educate our young people about making smart choices in the coming weeks. They are applicable the entire year really, but, with so many more people shopping and visiting multiple locations in the coming weeks, criminals are sure to be on the prowl. Here are just a few of the reminders the agency shared: Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside. If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area. Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight. Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit. Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location. Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car. If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall, or well-lighted location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need. Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you. Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car. Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security. Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them. The agency also provided a few tips for safer behaviors at home: Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail. Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during the holiday season by soliciting donations doorto-door for charitable causes although no charity is involved. Ask for their identification, and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate. At this time of year, there is so much good cheer and stress that it is easy to get caught up in either the giddiness or the busyness of the festivities and all that comes with them. Even the best planning is still sometimes not enough to avoid being the victim of a crime, but a little extra vigilance on our parts can make it more difficult for criminals to accomplish their goal of taking advantage of us. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-730-0476

A letter from the department of justice was sent to supervisor and chairwoman Angie Cabell, who represents District 3, in November announcing the investigation into whether the supervisors had violated the Fair Housing Act (FHA). Cabell was the lone person who voted against denying the project. The FHA prohibits discrimination on the basis of race and other protected classes in zoning decisions. “The focus of our investigation will be whether the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors has unlawfully discriminated on the basis of race in the denial of a rezoning application submitted by KCG Development LLC for the construction of an affordable housing development known as The Reserve at South Creek,” read a letter from Sameena Shina Majeed, chief of the housing and civil enforcement section. KCG Development LLC’s application to rezone a 26acre property so it could build a 204 multi-family apartment complex in Powhatan. The project, known as The Reserve at South Creek, would have been situated on land located at the crossroad of Old Church Road and Carter Gallier Boulevard. The developer proposed to finance the project using housing tax credits. The case drew a great deal of attention from residents, many of whom spoke at meetings pertaining to the project. Most who spoke publicly vehemently opposed a project that would have brought low-income apartments to the county. A very small number had publicly supported it and argued it would fill a need in Powhatan for affordable housing. A good portion of the arguments against the apartment complex included increased traffic on already congested roads, negatively impacting the rural feel of the county, extra burden on the schools, and increased crime. But some of the stronger rhetoric against the apartment complex was later cited in a letter sent to the county by a law firm representing the developer. The letter alleged that denying the rezoning request violated the Fair Housing Act and caused the developer to suffer “injury as a direct result of the county’s discrimina-

tion.” It offered to discuss resolution of the claims without the additional cost of litigation. County attorney Tom Lacheney said in 2018 that he didn’t see a legal claim in it and that the county wouldn’t take action because the rezoning was denied and the case is closed. The department sent a two-page request for different documents pertaining to the county in general and the KCG Development case in particular. Included in the request were: copies of the county’s comprehensive plan for 2010 and 2019 and a current zoning map of the county; a list of all proposed multifamily housing developments, workforce housing developments, and developments using federal low income housing tax credits or any other federal or state grants since January 2010, and a list of all proposed single-family residential housing developments since January 2010. The letter also asked for all documents related to KCG Development; the zoning history of property where the project was proposed; sign-in sheets from the meetings where the project was discussed; documents related to the development provided by the Powhatan Citizens Alliance and any other civic groups, and any other documents or correspondence regarding the project.

it comes to leaders on the mat, the program is turning to its juniors. “That’s a big thing for this year, is us stepping into that leadership position as juniors,” said junior Sean Hall, who last year placed third in the 126 weight class of states. “Us being younger, we still have a couple more years to grow, so us growing together can really help each other – just

everyone benefitting from everyone else.” “They’ve handled it really well so far,” Powhatan head coach Jonathan Tanaka said. “Hopefully we can just continue that.” Powhatan last year as a team took fifth place in states and finished second to Eastern View in regionals. e’s been thinking about this since he was probably five years old. Collin Gerardi had Virginia Tech blankets and pillows in his room while growing up. He’s been a Hokie fan all his life. On top of it all, he’s from Virginia. The school is very special to him. So while it’s still very early in his first season as a starting wrestler for the Hokies, just traveling with the team, going places, getting ready for home matches and being a Virginia Tech wrestler – it’s GERARDI everything that the fourtime state champion from Powhatan expected. It’s everything he’s been dreaming about throughout his life. “A big thing we’ve been talking about here and I try to live by all the time is just being grateful – being grateful for the opportunity to wrestle here and to represent Virginia Tech,” Gerardi said. “Because this can be stressful…doing school and wrestling, taking some losses – whatever it may be, it’s stressful – but at the end of the day, you have to put it in perspective and be grateful for the opportunity to put on that maroon and orange singlet.” Going into his first year in the see GERARDI, pg. 5B

out J.D. McMillin, wrestling at 120, became the program’s third individual state champion his senior year. This season, Powhatan’s team goals are to win the Region 4B team tournament and place among the top 3 in states. And if the Powhatan Indians are in the top 3, then that means they had several of their wrestlers place and do really well. Last year they took 7 wrestlers to the state tournament, and they’re looking to try and take more this year. In addition to Hall (126), the Indians return two-time state qualifiers Linwood Hill (195 or 220) and Gavin Timmons (132). Tanaka noted that Hall – who also earned state runner-up honors as a freshman and earned third as a sophomore after missing much of the season due to a shoulder injury – put together a really good offseason. And he’s built up his strength, so he’s “a bit more filled-out for that weight,” Hall said. He’s complemented lifting for about eight months with practices three times a week and runs. Against opponents on the mat this year, he’s looking to get into more scrambles and ride tough on top. Timmons – who last year shifted up a weight-class to 132 right before the postseason with Hall’s return and is projected to wrestle at 132 for the season – wants to place at states this time around. He feels his aerobics have definitely improved thanks to both the increased mileage of his running from this past summer and the caliber at which he ran throughout this most recent cross country season. He also spoke to improving his upperbody strength. “I was lacking that last year and I felt it,” Timmons said. “But this year I think I’m able to pull some more strength together so I can hit the moves that I want to hit in the match.” He added of the team: “I think everyone in general has gotten stronger this year.” Hill wrestled 220 the last two years, but he’s noticeably cut down his weight since last season, and in addition to teammate Micah Holt being able to

es enjoyed seeing it. “That’s what Coach Marable and I enjoy seeing,” Burgess said. “We’re improving.” Powhatan’s players have the opportunity to learn from someone who’s not too far removed from the basketball court himself. He also knows what it takes to get to the next level. Burgess was a four-year mainstay in VCU’s lineup from 2013 to 2017, helping his Rams reach the NCAA tournament all four years, and he recently competed professionally in Romania and Mexico. “Being able to play at a high level in each area of basketball that I played in – especially being on winning teams at each level of basketball I’ve played at – it helps a lot,” he said. He’s reunited with Powhatan head coach Ryan Marable, who was on McAloon’s coaching staff during Burgess’ senior year of high school at Benedictine. They built a relationship over the last several years, and when Marable got hired as the Powhatan basketball team’s new head coach, the opportunity came open for Burgess to join his staff.

contribute at 220, his coaches feel that the 195 class is a little bit better weight for him. Hill is a lot faster this year, Tanaka said, and his coaches are challenging him to see if he can be more of a leader, a little more vocal and a really good role model and example for the younger wrestlers. Tanaka also noted that both Hill and Timmons have the ability to place in the state tournament. “This year it’s a matter of trusting that ability and making sure that they see the competition they need to see in order to get there,” Tanaka said. He added that Hayden Fitzsimmons, who last year placed 6th in regionals in the 160 weight class and is jumping up to 182 this winter, “had an awesome offseason.” Fitzsimmons decided not to play football this year and wanted to focus just on wrestling; he lifted throughout the summer and fall seasons and wrestled this fall. “He looks really good; really excited for him going up to 182,” Tanaka said of Fitzsimmons. “Really excited for him to test the waters at that weight class.” AJ Gaskins and Andrew Cheatham, who last year placed 5th in regionals as a freshman, both have been considered for the 145 class, and Cheatham is also a candidate for wrestling even further up at 152. “As a ninth grader at 138...I

thought he wrestled really well last year; we were really impressed with him, he had to wrestle a lot of upperclassmen throughout the year,” Tanaka said of Cheatham. “This year it’s gonna be: how fast can he transition to 145, 152 or wherever he ends up, how well he can acclimate to those weights. Obviously he’s been wrestling a long time and it was really cool last year to see him have some success as a 9th grader…a lot of kids, especially at that weight, really struggle making the transition.” And with older brother Colby Cheatham having enjoyed a standout wrestling career as a state placer and two-time state qualifier, Andrew has the chance to try and best his brother’s marks, as becoming a threetime state qualifier and placer are still among the possibilities for the sophomore. Powhatan has seen a strong influx of newcomers – mostly 9th and 10th graders and several student-athletes from the JV football team – join the program. They helped raise the number of wrestlers in the room to 38 as of Wednesday, Nov. 20. Some of the newcomers include student-athletes who were part of Blackhawk, wrestled for a few years, took some time off and then came back to the sport. “Really, really happy when we get those kids back because it validates that: number one,

that our program is something that is worthwhile and that kids want to be part of,” Tanaka said. “And at the same time, obviously there’s a reason why they want to come back, whether or not it’s the sport or their friends or whatever the case may be, but it’s just cool to see that those kids have made that decision on their own.” Powhatan will test itself against some of the region’s best, taking on teams ranging from Spotsylvania to Hanover, Lee-Davis and George WytheRichmond to Dinwiddie, whom the Indians are slated to host in their first 2019-20 home meet on Tuesday, Dec. 10 (6 p.m.). “It makes our region a little deeper,” Tanaka said. “Personally we think it’s going to be a good thing for us…we always want to challenge our guys, we always want our guys to be prepared for the state tournament and we think the best way to do that is to be able to grind through that regional tournament and be able to push through and wrestle some quality kids.” The Indians will continue to see new Dominion District opponent Cosby (whom they’ll host in a tri-meet with Atlee on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, 6 p.m.) as a really good test for them, and on the team’s designated Senior Night, they’ll host both Dominion District and Region 4B opponent Monacan (Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, 6 p.m.). Although Powhatan

won’t have any senior wrestlers that night, Tanaka wants to recognize Ryan Steinruck and Isaac Trent; both seniors aren’t wrestling this year, but they’ve given multiple years to the program. “Both of them have been stellar kids, stellar student-athletes as far as kids that give you everything they have in the practice room,” Tanaka said. In addition to Coaches Tanaka, Richard Fitzsimmons and Zach Olson, Powhatan Wrestling’s staff will feature Powhatan High School Class of 2013 standout Thomas Smith, who also graduated from and wrestled for Ferrum College and is a former state place-winning wrestler, and three-time state champion Lam Le, who is coming back into the fold after coaching at Powhatan when Tanaka first started, and who worked with wrestlers like Sean Hall when they were at Blackhawk. “It’s been really cool to have some familiar faces come back around and it’s one of those things where…we as a coaching staff as a whole, we want people to…enjoy the success that we have every year because they were all a very critical part of it,” Tanaka said. Hall is among those looking forward to Powhatan’s season beginning on Dec. 7. “I think – as long as everyone’s putting in the work – we can be state champs,” Hall added.

“He trusts my basketball knowledge,” Burgess said. “It’s always great to give back to locally where you’re from. It’s just a great opportunity for myself to start off in my coaching career.” “Trust is huge,” Marable said. “I can just trust that we have the same philosophies and it’s all about making these kids better and making them better parents, fathers, citizens… and better basketball players.” Burgess works to help each and every one of the team’s players with areas where they NICK VANDELOECHT/POWHATAN TODAY need help or improvement. Powhatan student-athletes earn postseason honors Staff Report The conclusion of 2019’s VHSL and VISAA fall seasons in both field hockey and volleyball saw several Powhatan student-athletes earn postseason honors for their standout play and contributions to their teams. Powhatan Field Hockey senior Michala Taylor earned First Team All-Region on the Region 4B field hockey team, and Ella Weber and Kaitlin Thompson both made Second Team All-Region. Erin Barney earned Honorable Mention. All four field hockey players were part of a season in which the Indians won three matches in penalty shootouts. Powhatan Volleyball seniors Sierra Ellison and Star Bryant were named to First Team All-Region on the Region 4B Girls Volleyball team, and sophomore setter Bryson Amorese was named to Second Team All-Region. All three were part of a standout season in which Powhatan went 19-6 with invitational games included and reached the Region 4B semifinals in postseason play. Ellison recently signed to DePaul University. Quinn Menger, from Powhatan, earned VISAA Division I First Team All-State honors. Menger, a junior, helped her St. Catherine’s volleyball team not only achieve a 26-5 season including invitational games, but also reach the VISAA Division I state final, in which the Saints fell to Flint Hill in four sets. Menger has committed to Penn State, which ranked no. 7 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Poll for Week 13 (Monday, Nov. 25). FILE PHOTOS/POWHATAN TODAY

boys’ and girls’ teams this year. Bailey Kantanen, Emily Matthews, Mia Wison, Maura Campbell and Troy Porter are among Powhatan’s leading returners. Newcomers include Cole and Wyatt Malkerson and Summer Kantanen. The coaches hope to have more

starting lineup, Gerardi felt that the preseason went by really quickly. He also felt he and his teammates put in a lot of really good training. When the regular stretch began, the Hokies dug in early with three tough duals against top 20 programs – no. 19 Missouri, no. 15 Northwestern and no. 8 Ohio State, which was then ranked third in the country. The Hokies came out on top in all three. They’re currently 3-0 as a team and ranked fifth in the nation themselves. “We prepared pretty well for it and I felt like we were all confident going in,â€? Gerardi said. “Our team atmosphere right now is in a great place as far as competition and team morale.â€? Gerardi’s match was actually the one to kickoff the Hokies’ dual with the Buckeyes. “I didn’t even have time to be nervous,â€? he said. “I just went out there and‌wrestled and came out on top, got the Hokies on a roll.â€? He set the tone with his 7-1 win by decision over Quinn Kinner – ranked 14th in the nation at the time – and then Gerardi’s friend, 125-pounder Joey Prata who went to St. Christopher’s School, ended the dual on a 5-2 victory for Tech. “The leaders on our team like David McFadden and some of the older guys really stepped up and motivated us to get going,â€? Gerardi said. “Traveling with the team, getting there and then just getting the job done was special. I really felt a part of the team.â€? The Hokies’ roster brings together wrestlers from different communi-

ties and states – several Northeasterners, several wrestlers from Virginia and Ohio and a few from the Carolinas and Alabama – but Gerardi said they all have a common ground: their love for the sport of wrestling. “We can hang out outside of wrestling and do things together,â€? he said. “And also, just being part of the Virginia Tech community in general has brought us closer together. We spend so much time together, whether it’s in the wrestling room or just being at our houses, because we live so close, but it’s special – we never really get tired of each other.â€? Gerardi’s record to open his first team season is 5-3. He and his teammates most recently wrestled in the Navy Classic, where he went 3-2. He said he didn’t have his best tournament, but he got a lot of good experience and saw a lot of things he can work on in the break leading up to the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas (Dec. 6-7). “So far this season’s been really good,â€? he said, “and transitioning from being a redshirt last year to being a starter this year has been a really cool experience.â€? Redshirting, he said, was really beneficial for him. “It’s kind of how you look at it, really; some people maybe don’t like the redshirt year as much‌they kind of wish maybe they were with the whole team‌but being able to redshirt and compete unattached at a lot of opens, getting a lot of good, quality matches in was super helpful for me,â€? Gerardi said, adding that “transitioning from high school to college was tough academically as well, so being able to have that year to maybe not

compete every single weekend but still get a lot of matches helped me kind of acclimate to school and wrestling all at the same time. It was awesome.â€? And while wrestling unattached, Gerardi won the 133 weight class title at the App State Open, placed 7th at the Southern Scuffle on a 4-2 record (with both his losses coming in sudden victory) and assembled an overall record of 17-6. He feels he’s matured a lot from last year to this year, and he’s been intentional with his training. “I’ve been able to work smarter and know when I need to back off a little bit and let my body recover‌and when I need to push it a little bit harder,â€? Gerardi said; striking that kind of balance early, he noted, will not only provide him with an advantage on the mat, but will also help him greatly after college when he enters the workforce. The biggest thing he’s taken away from his three season losses to date is that he’s capable of coming back and beating those guys later in the year. It’s a long season, so he doesn’t want to dwell on his losses too much, but he spoke mainly to keeping up his intensity and making sure that he’s “firing on all cylinders the whole time.â€? “Even my coaches tell me, every day in practice, that my conditioning is second-to-none,â€? he said. “I can go for 7 minutes – I can go for as long as anyone in the country – so really just keep my intensity from the beginning, and I’m gonna end up wearing those guys out.â€? He’s aiming to place high on the podium this coming weekend in the Las Vegas invite, which he described as being similar to the NCAA tournament in March.

swimmers score this season, and while they don’t necessarily expect experienced swimmers to get a best time or PR every time they swim an event in 2019-20, they project that the less experienced swimmers should see time drops as they gain more experience. The tone that the coaches would like to set is a fun and competitive environment with lots of team spirit and excellent sportsmanship.
