of the competition. The school’s Leftovers Club sponsored the pageant, which once again raised money for Relay for Life. This year, the event raised $1,305 for the fight against cancer, said Christian Miller, the faculty advisor for the club. “I thought it was magic. There are always those times when you think, ‘it is going to be what it is going to be,’ but it came together and just clicked,” he said. see MR. POWHATAN, pg. 8

During the robbery, the sheriff’s office received what they believe was a related fake 911 call saying there was a man driving up and down Judes Ferry Road in a vehicle with a rifle near the high school, Searfoss said. “We believe that was to divert resources away from the pharmacy. We did send resources to that area, but we also withheld resources locally and were able to be on scene at the pharmacy very quickly once the 911 call came from the pharmacy,” he said. see ARRESTED, pg. 3

POWHATAN – Powhatan County was truly part of a global community when local ham radio operators recently competed in the 2020 Winter Field Day. Powhatan County Emergency Management and the Powhatan Area Radio Club (PARC) worked together to host a local station from 2 p.m. on Jan. 25 to 2 p.m. on Jan. 26 at Powhatan State Park. About 40 people, including club members and guests, participated in the event, which saw them communicating with other ham radio operators throughout the United States and worldwide, said Curt Nellis, the county’s emergency management coordinator. Working out of the county’s mobile command center, the local participants were able to make 848 total contacts, including people in the majority of the continental United States, Alaska, and six other countries, Nellis said. Over the 24-hour period, the group made

contact with stations in Italy, Thailand, Germany, Canada, South America, and the Netherlands. “It was awesome. That was the most contacts we have ever had since we have been doing Field Day. It is going to get bigger and bigger every year,” said Nellis, who has been a licensed ham radio operator since the 1980s. This is the second time the local group has participated in the Winter Field Day, and it also competes in a summer version. While the outstanding 2020 results will be turned into the Amateur Radio and Relay League, Nellis added that the local participants were in it for the experience and the fun. “We are doing it for the practice, for the exercise of putting the equipment together and making it so efficient that we are able to get out that far. They really had to engineer their antenna and tune their equipment so they were able to make that many contacts. If your equipment is not set up right, you are not going to get out that far,” Nellis said. see RADIO, pg. 6

Nurseries’ properties to be sold in foreclosure auction By Gregory J. Gilligan Richmond Times-Dispatch

Properties owned by Watkins Nurseries Inc., founded in 1876 and run by the fifth generation of the Watkins family, are slated to be sold at a foreclosure auction later this month. A total of 342.3 acres of land in Chesterfield, Powhatan and Amelia counties - with a combined assessed value of $2.314 million - as well as vehicles and equipment owned by a sister company are scheduled to be sold at four different auctions at three locations on Feb. 20. The auctions will be held on the courthouse steps in Chesterfield, Powhatan and Amelia counties. Foreclosure notices were placed on Page D5 in the legal advertising section of Friday’s Richmond Times-Dispatch. Henrico County-based Dudley Resources is contracted to handle the foreclosure auctions on behalf of a bank that provided financing to the Watkins nursery and recycling businesses, said Tim Dudley, president of the real estate auction firm. “The bank is foreclosing on it for lack of payment,” Dudley said, declining to name the bank. Robert Watkins, the owner and president of Watkins Nurseries, could not be reached for comment. His father, former state Sen. John Watkins, a Republican who represented Powhatan and Chesterfield counties for 34 years, said SonaBank has not sent a formal notice of foreclosure. “We have not received any notice,” John Watkins said. “The law states you have to provide notice. My son is seeking legal advice.” John Watkins said the two businesses - Watkins Nurseries and Virginia Resources Recycled LLC - have loans that are cross collateralized, meaning the collateral for one loan also is used as collateral for another loan. “They have not been able to see WATKINS, pg. 7

With some Richmond area schools closing because of high rates of student and staff illness, Jones said he wanted to share that the district has been monitoring absentee rates for the last two weeks. “We have only seen an increase of 3 percent divisionwide with most of our schools maintaining normal absentee rates. We have seen an increase at Powhatan High School but they do not come close to the level of considering closing school at this time,” Jones said. Jones added that the custodial staff at each building site disinfects twice daily with Virex One-Step Disinfectant Cleaner. Additionally, PCPS and Service Solutions have implemented the AirX Germicidal Disinfectant program. This one-step hospital-use germicidal is used on all surfaces throughout the buildings. The division will continue to work hard to provide a safe, clean learning environment for students and staff, he said. Census committee ramping up efforts ahead of March mailings By Laura McFarland Editor

POWHATAN – The Powhatan Complete Count Committee is ready for the final push to raise awareness before the official start of the 2020 Census process. The local committee has been working for the last year to brainstorm and begin to promote the census, which begins in March, and stress how important it can be to the county, said Carla Neidigh, project manager for the Powhatan-based effort of the national event. The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted every 10 years. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and inform how state, local and federal lawmakers will allocate billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities every year for the next 10 years. “It is critical that every resident respond to the census, because for every uncounted resident, a locality will lose $2,000 in federal funding. The census count apportions $675 billion in federal funding, which is used for roads, health care, schools, and many other programs that support our community,” Neidigh said. Neidigh said she applied for and received a $1,200 grant from the state to create road

signs that will be placed in strategic places around the county reminding people it is time for the census. The grant money comes from state resources set aside to help the Commonwealth develop and distribute resource materials to state agencies, local governments, and nonprofit organizations to maximize public education efforts and other initiatives of the Virginia Complete Count Commission. Based on the timeline for the census, Neidigh said that the earlier residents respond, the more taxpayer money they will save and the least intrusive the process will be on them. In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, residents may respond for their home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. Census Day is observed nationwide on April 1. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. If residents do not have adequate internet but want to respond online, they can come to the Powhatan County Administration Building located at 3834 Old Buckingham Road, visit the information window, and a staff member will help them go online and get started filling the form out. The Powhatan County Public Library also has free internet access, and there are staff members who are prepared to assist residents to find the right site and get started, Neidigh said. Residents

should bring their identification number from the mailing they received. If residents fail to respond to the first invitation, they will receive additional mailings, she said. Between May and July, census takers will begin visiting homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted. Residents need to beware of documents that are similar in form to the United States Census forms but are issued by other groups, Neidigh said. The census documents do not come out until March, so anything received before then should be carefully scrutinized. She also offered a warning about scammers pretending to be census workers. “The U.S. Census Bureau will not be calling you. So if someone is calling you on the phone, there is a good chance they are a scammer. They will also never ask you for your Social Security number or bank account numbers,” she said. If residents do not respond to the invitation and a worker comes to their homes, they will have photo ID and a satchel with United States Census on the side of it. “They are not going to want to come inside your house. That is a frequent worry I hear from people,” she added. For more information about U.S. Census 2020, visit https://2020census.gov. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

Melissa Glanden, school librarian at Powhatan High School, is a winner of this year’s I Love My Librarian Award. Recognized for her leadership in her school and commitment to transforming lives, she is one of only 10 librarians in the country to receive this national honor. Known by faculty as an “evangelibrarian,” someone who seeks to convert students and teachers alike into staunch patrons of the school library, Glanden draws all types of users to the library, successfully influencing reluctant readers to develop a love of reading, learning and creating. Glanden’s work has transformed the Powhatan High School library. Her introduction of new technologies, a maker-space and dedicated zones within the library sparked an uptick in visits and material circulation. Now, her nominators say, reluctant readers willingly visit the library to check out books for leisure reading. Students reading below level continue to build their reading skills by having access to teen-friendly materials such as Hi-Low books, novels in verse, graphic novels, and manga. This year’s award winners each received a $5,000 cash prize, a plaque and a travel stipend to attend the "I Love My Librarian Award" ceremony in Philadelphia on Jan. 25 during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting. The event was streamed via Facebook. Glanden was recognized at the Powhatan County School Board’s meeting on Jan. 14. She is pictured above with Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, and school board chairman Joe Walters.

“Yard Works is very excited about expanding our capacity and our geography, but we are equally excited to absorb the expertise that the Hardwood Mulch associates bring to the table” said Yard Works president Jim Bolinger. “The acquisition of Hardwood Mulch allows us to serve hundreds of new commercial customers in new geography and allows us to combine our experience and knowledge with theirs. ARRESTED Continued from pg. 1

On Nov. 25, 2019, the Henrico Police Department was called at about 5:59 p.m. to the 2000 block of Staples Mill Road for the report of a robbery, according to a release on the agency’s Facebook page. Two black male suspects entered the pharmacy 10 minutes before closing time and displayed handguns demanding narcotic medications. They were wearing sunglasses, partial facial coverings, and latex gloves. The suspects escaped with an abundant amount of medications to include pills, powder, and liquid medications. They were driving a white older model sedan. After the second robbery, the two county agencies reached out to each other because of the similarities in the crimes, Searfoss said. The latest report he had seen listed the combined amount of prescription medications

stolen from the two robberies as in excess of $50,000, he said. After news of the arrests broke last week, the sheriff’s office put a short statement on its Facebook page acknowledging two suspects had been apprehended. Searfoss said there was high interest in the case because a daytime robbery like that is not the type of crime Powhatan experiences often. “Obviously, it is still in people’s minds because it is a very serious crime and someone could have potentially been hurt or killed in the commission of it. It is not something we take lightly, and that is why so many resources and time have been dedicated to figure out who did it and then hold them accountable,” Searfoss said. Rick Pelletier, owner and pharmacist in charge of Powhatan Drug Inc., spoke last week about the news of the arrests. He said authorities have asked he not discuss the

details of the robbery. He said it is his nature to put negative events behind him, but when he heard from authorities about the arrest, it impacted him again. Although he is trying not to dwell on it, he said he did make security updates such as keeping the doors locked in the morning until there is a good amount of foot traffic and updating his security system. Pelletier said the number of people who came into his store to offer encouragement after the robbery was remarkable and very heartening for him. “I have been humbled by the empathy and encouragement granted to me by my customers and the community after this event. We are all blessed to experience to experience living in a true community like Powhatan,” he said. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

Board denies rezoning application in Village By Laura McFarland News Editor

POWHATAN – The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors recently voted unanimously to deny an application attempting to rezone property in the Village area to Village Residential. On Monday, Jan. 27, the board voted 5-0 in favor of denying an application brought by Richard Lee Bucher, who wanted to rezone a 5.66-acre property along Old Buckingham Road near Mill Quarter Road from Agricultural-10 (A-10) to Village Residential (VR). Bucher’s proposal was to divide the property into three lots, accommodating construction of three singlefamily dwellings. The subject property is currently vacant. During a presentation to the board, Bucher talked about purchasing the property in 2013, abating and disposing of asbestos to an existing structure and demolished the two structures, and all of the costs and fees associated with the property since then. He said he was ready to make it an income-producing property with three lots ranging in size from 1.5 acres to 2.4 acres, saying they are consistent to what is already in close proximity. No one spoke during the public hearing on the project. The 2019 Long-Range Comprehensive Plan designates the subject property as Village Residential. However, county staff recommended denying the project, as did the planning commission. When asked why, Andrew Pompei, planning director, explained that the comprehensive plan’s recommendation for VR developments is that they be walkable, cohesive neighborhoods. This project did not exemplify those characteristics, which includes sidewalks, a cohesive design, and a mix of uses and housing types, he said. The board then held its vote to deny the project. Other business handled at the meeting included: „ Larry Nordvig, who represents District 2, added an agenda item to the meeting to have a discussion about moving the board’s meeting start time from 6

Jesus Is the Answer!

Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. But what is the question?!?! Disciples were squabbling about greatness and position (verse 37). They didn’t understand Jesus. He didn’t come to guarantee a great career, retirement portfolio, long life or perfect health and wealth. His purpose was far more important. He came to free us from the prison of sin and condemnation by paying the ransom we cannot pay. The cost was His life and blood on that cross. Salvation — is that THE question you want Him to answer for you? (Mark 16:15-16).

p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Residents who work outside of the county and may be interested in coming to meetings often find it difficult to get home from work, eat, and make it to the meetings, he said. Karin Carmack, District 5, agreed with this assessment. Williams suggested the board members talk with some of their constituents about it and come back for a discussion and possible vote at the next meeting. „ Within the consent agenda, which the board unanimously approved, was a consulting agreement with Good Government Ventures LLC, located in Manakin Sabot. According to the agreement, the board is interested in the long-term future of the county and hired the consulting firm to help develop various strategic planning initiatives for the county. According to the Jan. 27 meeting agenda, the company will facilitate the development of a shared vision, mission statement, and strategic plan. The consultant will receive $100 per hour with a maximum of $1,500. „ One of the agenda items for the meeting was for the board to review Agricultural and Forestal Districts (AFDs), which are temporary and voluntary restrictions to development placed on properties by the consent of the property owner and Powhatan County. This program temporarily reduces the tax valuation for the enrolled properties, in exchange for the temporary relinquishment of development rights. Staff recommended that the board defer making a decision on the issue until after July, allowing staff and the board to concentrate on other high-priority issues. The board unanimously passed a motion to approve a resolution that temporarily continues existing AFDs through July 31, 2020. A little earlier in the meeting, David Anderson of Powhatan spoke during the public comment period, noting that if the board voted to approve the resolution of AFDs as presented, it would unilaterally extend the expiration period for approximately 100 days. He spoke as an agent of an LLC currently involved with

quality of the zoning. As a healthcare executive for the last 25 years, she said it seemed like a good step to help look after the health of the county. “We have a growing, vivacious community and it should be kept that way, Brown said. Although she is new to the planning commission, what Brown said she appreciates about its role in local decision making is that it helps set direction and lays a good

groundwork to provide information to assist the board of supervisors. Brown said she hopes to continue the wellthought-out work of the previous planning commission and grow based on their example. She recognizes that the biggest challenges for the planning commission are maintaining consistency in its decision making and striking the right balance regarding development and growth in Powhatan County. “We can’t just stay where we are, so setting

the program, saying the LLC intended to end its participation in the volunteer program when the original term ends on April 12, 2020, and had already notified the staff of that decision. During the second public comment period near the end of the meeting, commissioner of the revenue Jamie Timberlake said Anderson had brought up a point about extending all deadlines that was glazed over and that the board’s decision could create more work for the LLC and staff. The week after the meeting, Timberlake said Anderson’s notice to staff was within 90 days of the renewal period and happened before all the terms were extended, so the LLC’s term is fine to expire in April. „ The board unanimously voted to amend the zoning ordinance to add several terms and definitions: adding definitions for the terms attached, comprehensive plan, contractor’s storage yard, detached, independent cooking facility, residential kitchen, corner lot line, pet, right-of-way, outdoor shed sales, and corner yard; adding language to clarify differences between duplex dwelling, three- or four-family dwelling, and townhouse dwelling; modifying the definition for the term private kennel, clarifying that permitted fowl includes chickens and ducks; modifying the definition for the term livestock, clarifying that goats, bison, ponies, alpacas, and llamas are all considered livestock; modifying the definition for the term flag lot to align with the definition for that term in the subdivision ordinance; modifying the definition of medical and dental lab to better reflect activities associated with that use; removing the term large lot development; correcting grammatical errors; removing incorrect references to other portions of the zoning ordinance, and adding references to certain definitions that identify related terms. Two comments during the public hearing raised a lengthy discussion about the weight of the changes being made and how they were mostly to make sure see BOARD, pg. 5

the boundaries on that becomes very difficult, she said. Hall is a second-generation lifelong Powhatan resident through his dad and said he has a great deal of interest in how Powhatan is developing and wanted to get involved and share his viewpoints. He said he was surprised when he was elected vice chairman but felt excited to take on the role. Moving forward, Hall said he could see some of the big issues coming before the planning com-

mission likely dealing with the development of Route 60 and improving the county’s commercialto-residential ratio to relieve some of the tax burden of residents and avoid tax increases. He also talked about the planning commission as an additional safeguard in helping find balance between attracting businesses and keeping Powhatan’s rural characteristics. The Powhatan County School Board recognized participants of the Powhatan Community Makers Project during its meeting on Jan. 14.

School board recognizes Powhatan Community Makers Project participants Contributed Report The National Art Honor Society (NAHS), led by Amy McManus and Jill Ward, and the Diverse Hands at Work club (DHAW), led by Nashae Jones and Christian Miller, embarked on the Powhatan Community Makers project to honor a diverse, multicultural group of Powhatan community members/groups that have helped the community flourish. This project was inspired by Richmond artist, Hamilton Glass, who created painted portraits with the help of the Richmond community at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in January and February of 2019. Students from the National Art Honor Society and Diverse Hands at Work had the opportunity

to travel to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to explore their diverse collections, and see Glass at work on his RVA Community Makers project. From the nominee applications, the PHS Diversity Committee selected four honorees. Selected honorees were interviewed by journalism students, and photographed by Stephanie Wirt, photography teacher. NAHS students then prepared the canvas for painting by sending the photographs through Photoshop and used a cutout filter to isolate the face value tones, and then projected the images to trace the honorees faces onto canvas. Once traced, the NAHS students prepared the background of the canvas for community mem-

Each year the Council for Exceptional Children requests nomination of students for the “Yes I can Award”. This year Dr. Lynn Clayton-Prince nominated Elijah Caleb Tiller. The selection committee had the challenging task of reviewing numerous excellent nominations and selecting 12 final Yes I can Award recipients. This year there was an outstanding pool of nominees to choose from, making the decisions all the more difficult. While Tiller was not selected to receive an award, the CEC mailed a certificate congratulating him on his remarkable achievements. Powhatan County Public Schools is proud of Tiller and encourages him to continue doing great things. Tiller was recognized at the Powhatan County School Board’s meeting on Jan. 14 as is pictured with school board chairman Joe Walters, left, and Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent.

cal farmers and artisans to be able to offer their products directly to consumers; to market those venues; and to cultivate community engagement using local food as a common link. The organization started Manakin Market in 2011 as an LLC, and eventually gained its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2015. Growing the organization has been both challenging and rewarding, but by adding highly trained staff to its team of market organizers, RVAg has been able to slowly and steadily add markets where there has been high demand from customers. During the 2019 market season RVAg worked with well over 100 local businesses (65 percent of which were women or minorityowned), providing the best of local produce, meats, plants, baked goods and more to the communities they serve. Enthusiasm, education and a social gathering spot are what make RVAg’s markets unique. As a result of their markets, nearly 3,000 acres of farmland were kept in production, with the food from the market averaging only about 30 miles from the farm to market.

During the 24-hour period, the local group had set up two high frequency stations – one in each end of the mobile command center, club member Jim Merritt said. Teams of two took turns at each station calling out across the airwaves and making contact with other operators. These aren’t long conversations – the operators generally share their unique call sign (Powhatan’s is N4POW) and location, what kind of station they have set up, and then record the time contact was made, he said. But the exercise shows the powerful reach of ham radios when they are set up well. PARC members have a good technical knowledge of antennas, radios, frequencies and how to contact people, and that, combined with good atmospheric conditions, is what helped them make so many connections, Merritt said. “The actual contacting

of people is the simple part. But getting it all set up and tuned in and working properly, that takes hours and hours ahead of the event to prepare,” he said. Merritt pointed out it took a strong team effort to get all of those preparations in place. Many of the participants knew each other and had

worked together previously, but others came whom they had only ever spoken to through the radio. There was a little bit of competition to see who among them could make the most contacts, but mostly everyone was working to add to the combined total, he said. The experience they got from the set up and

operational practice is where Nellis sees the most value. There is the benefit of using tools such as the mobile command center and the light generator tower to make sure they are functional and in a state of readiness. The exercise also keeps the participants’ radio skills fresh so they are better prepared to be of

help in case of an emergency. During times of a disaster, if a community’s communications network goes down, ham radio operators are the first line of defense to reconnecting and having the ability to

few years before she died, my maternal grandmother developed neuropathy as a side effect of treatment she underwent for breast cancer. For a full year, the condition affected her hands and feet to such a point that she couldn’t really feel things. One of the most devastating impacts this had on her daily life was that, at my mother’s insistence, Nana had to give up driving after almost being in a few car accidents. This was a devastating blow to Nana (Betty to everyone else), who was an independent woman and a former nurse who didn’t like being housebound. She wouldn’t have taken a taxi and this was long before services like Lyft or Uber were a thing. Instead, she had to rely on friends or family members when she wanted to go somewhere. Luckily, she did have a good number of both, so she wasn’t sitting home alone all the time. But for someone who was used to making her own decisions

I was reminded of Nana’s situation again when I was working on the community calendar for this week’s paper. In the Ongoing section, we have calendar entries for Ride Assist Services, a community agency that advocates for the majority of seniors who desire to remain in their home and enjoy their community by providing transportation for those unable to drive themselves. Jayne Lloyd, transportation coordinator for the program, reached out to me earlier this year to help promote the new service. She was looking for both volunteer drivers and Powhatan County seniors who are 60-plus, ambulatory, and able to live independently but need transportation for basic needs. These could be trips as simple as going to doctor appointments, doing grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy, or taking care of business at a bank. It is strange to think about little trips that I might consider as an afterthought as I am driving from place to place, but, for a senior who can’t

Doug Mitchell, a longtime East Coast banker who is leading CSBH’s efforts said: “New Horizon has developed a very good reputation in the western part of Richmond. It will be important to our business strategy to maintain the relationships the employees and board have developed over the years. We plan on retaining all the employees, several of the current board member’s and keep the name New Horizon. Our plans involve investing a significant amount of new capital into the organization, which will allow it to expand its operations, lending capabilities, online presence, customer service support, IT, and marketing. In addition, CSBH plans to add additional staff that will all be located in Powhatan.” Per the terms of the merger agreement, CSBH will acquire all of the outstanding shares of common stock of New Horizon in exchange for cash in the amount of $25.50 per share. The transaction has been unanimously approved by New Horizon’s board of directors as well as by CSBH’s sole member, and is expected to close in the second or early third quarter of 2020, subject to the receipt

of regulatory approvals and the approval of New Horizon’s shareholders. “This transaction represents an exceptional opportunity for CSBH to combine with a financially strong and exceptionally well-managed bank possessing a culture and core values similar to ours, as well as the same commitment to build long-term client relationships,” said Doug Mitchell. “Our top priority now is to make sure New Horizon’s clients experience a smooth transition.” New Horizon’s president and chief executive officer, Brian Grizzard said, “We are extremely pleased to be able to partner with CSBH, a company who shares our same commitment to community banking. Our board of directors has expended significant efforts to help determine the best opportunities for our shareholders, customers and employees, and we believe CSBH is the right partner. In addition to increased capital, enhanced technology and other banking services that will improve our product offerings, by partnering with CSBH, our customers will still see familiar faces and know that we will maintain the relationships that have been built over the years.”

The properties, both off of U.S. 360 about 15 miles west of the Brandermill residential community in Chesterfield, are being offered separately or together. The assessed value of the combined properties is $992,800. One parcel has numerous small storage buildings and shed. The other has two houses. The farm, acquired in 1998, is the primary production area for the nursery and its tree operation. • The fourth offering includes the equipment and vehicle assets owned by Virginia Resources Recycled, a commercial and residential land clearing, grinding, grubbing and logging business. That auction will start at 3:15 p.m. at the Amelia County Courthouse. The machinery and vehicles, including tractors and trucks, is valued at more than $1.5 million.

L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Reader offended by drawing connection to Nazis Dear Editor, I found your opinion article “Don't forget the past or risk repeating it” totally out of character for what I thought I knew of your character and business sense in publishing a newspaper. I am sure your experience in visiting those sites in Germany was surreal and memorable as I have heard others who have been there express the same. As has become commonplace for any person who desires to express their strongest emotion and emphasis about the subject they are writing about or speaking about they will invoke the actions of the Nazis and The Holocaust. It seems you’re just another news media person who was deprived of the hopes and expectation of writing about their hyped prediction of riots and violence that was going to take place at the gun rights rally at the Virginia Capitol. To make any connection between the march that took place in Charlottesville in August of 2017 and the rally in Richmond at the Capitol in support of defending constitutional Second Amendment rights is absurd. The rally in Charlottesville was about not removing a statue. But who cares about facts. To further demonize the citizens at the Second Amendment rally you used the racial slur (white supremacist) that was used to name the people at the Charlottesville rally. Evidently you did not see or chose to ignore the visual news coverage of the Second Amendment rally that showed people of all races and colors at the event. It's been stated before if the Jews had been well armed personally the "Holocaust" may not have occurred. R. Kenneth Hatcher Powhatan County

Be on guard against letting seeds of hate be planted Dear Editor, I just wanted to compliment you on your article (“Don’t forget the past or risk repeating it”). I found it factual and relevant to understanding the past horrors at Auschwitz and how we have to be on guard to not let similar beliefs and values take root and grow unimpeded. We have to continue to remind everyone of these truths as often as possible or we are doomed to repeat it for sure. James Padgett Powhatan County

and was thrilled that all of their hard work paid off. In the week that followed the show, when he thought back on what they accomplished, he said what he loved the most was that they raised so much money for a good cause and had fun doing it. “I know a lot of people who have been affected by cancer and it is awful, so we are here just to fight for that, he said.

Cascone, who is also a member of the Leftovers Club, said participating in the show was something new and different for him, so he was happy to seize the opportunity. He showed off his love of Star Wars by dressing in character as Kylo Ren and waving around a light saber. For the talent competition, he rapped to Nate Dogg and Warren G’s “Regulate. “My favorite part was everybody else’s talent. I am glad I did mine, but I also got to see what everybody else can do, to see what they are really passionate about or what they really enjoy doing, Cascone said. Cascone said he was surprised and pleased to be chosen as the runner-up but, like Lowe, added the most important thing about being in the show was its mission of fighting cancer. Sara Amiss, a junior and lead director of the pageant, said she didn’t think any of the contestants were really focused on winning but were there for the right reasons. Amiss stressed how much work went into the show. The contestants began practicing in January, meeting during Indian Time as well as two or more times after school each week. Organizers began planning the show in the fall, and it took an incredible amount of work from those behind the scenes as well as those out front, Amiss said. “We had great emcees. We had Maddy Hayden and Hailey Camp emcee and they did an awesome job. We also had so many people backstage. We had a bunch of people back there making it work. It was just a whole big team effort, she said. The group also announced at the event that its popular Color-A-Cure Fun Run/Walk is teaming up with the Powhatan Relay for Life, which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. The events will be held together on May 2 with the color run at 9 a.m. and Relay held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Powhatan High School. They’ve spent all four years on varsity side-by-side, and they’ve worked hard together in practice throughout that time. So, for both Blessed Sacrament Huguenot seniors, it was fitting that they each got to reach 1,000 career points in the same night when they helped their Knights fend off Brunswick Academy 65-60 at home the previous Friday. And then, in Tuesday’s Senior Night game, Kurtz and Avery poured in 26 and 25 points, respectively, to lead the Knights past Banner Christian 86-79 and help them continue their first winning season since the 2014-15 school year. Michala Taylor (center), pictured with her family, is honored during Senior Night on Thursday.

After the Powhatan Indians took five losses in the six games before, Tuesday’s game provided them with a boost of confidence as they defeated Clover Hill 57-45 on the road to complete the season sweep of the tall and athletic Cavaliers. “We played very well as a team,” Powhatan head coach Kristy Henderson said Saturday. “I thought we

did some really good things.” The energy was there. They played great defense, she said, and they got the Cavaliers’ big three in foul trouble in the first half. They drove on offense and capitalized on Clover Hill’s fouls to rack up a whopping 25 points on free throws. Sophomore Faith Henderson, who led Powhatan with 22 points, shot 16 for 20 from the free-throw line. Her teammate and fellow sophomore Kayla Terry shot a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe, drained a pair of 3-pointers and poured in 20 points total. And the quick and versatile Michala Taylor, who shot 5 for 7 from the line and

totaled 9 points, had her best game of the season, Kristy Henderson said. She described Taylor as “very controlled, very poised” in Tuesday’s win, and she noted how the senior “rebounded the heck out of the ball” for the Indians. “She played really, really well,” Henderson said. “Her playing really well and scoring 9 points for us against Clover Hill definitely contributed to our win.” Taylor on Thursday was honored alongside teammates Gabby Dintino and Rachel Losch prior to Powhatan girls basketball’s Senior Night see GBB, pg. 2B

Bearcats edge BSH by 1 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls basketball team last Tuesday took a narrow setback to Banner Christian, 36-35. “With one starter (senior Elizabeth Carter) not playing and a second starter at 50% and Banner full strength, I am very proud of the team’s effort,” BSH head coach Phil Villiott said. “They never gave up and played hard.” Freshman Mitchell NICK VANDELOECHT/POWHATAN TODAY poured in 20 points and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot senior Katie Schiefer senior Katie Schiefer (24) drives inside the arc in last Tuesday’s home netted 11. tight in the third quarter. That’s when the Cavaliers rolled out a 9-0 run, which featured a 3-pointer launched down the middle by Corie Addo and a dunk from Samuel Walker on a breakaway. But after Powhatan junior L.J. Alston netted a putback before the quarter expired to tighten Clover Hill’s lead to 51-45, Powhatan head coach Ryan Marable told his players: “Some of you guys have eight minutes left on this court. Let’s leave it all out there. Do you want to just fold right now, or do you want to battle these last eight minutes and play from behind and show that we’re tough enough to battle from behind?” His Indians responded with 11 straight points. Defensive stops led to three consecutive fourthquarter 3s that propelled the Indians back into the lead. From there, free throws and rebounds in the closing stretch helped them win their final slated home game of the season, 67-62 over Clover Hill, to the approval of a high-energy student section. “That’s a testament to them and just sticking with it the whole year,” Marable said. “We communicate, just work hard every day at practice and translate it to the games,” said junior Brylan Rather, who led Powhatan in scoring with 22 points, After the Cavaliers committed a turnover near the top of the fourth, senior Trey Moore passed the ball to Rather, who let it fly through the hoop for 3. And then, on Clover Hill’s next possession, Rather hauled in the defensive rebound and soon got the ball in the corner, where he hit his second

consecutive shot from behind the arc to knot up the game at 51-all. The Indians then forced the Cavaliers into turning the ball over to Moore, and the ball found its way to senior Logan Wyatt, who fired from deep to land Powhatan’s third consecutive 3-pointer and push the Indians ahead 54-51. Powhatan continued to roll as Rather went for a block at the net and denied a leadtightening layup attempt by the visitors, returning the ball to the Indians. Wyatt parlayed Rather’s stop into two free throws. Powhatan overall got seven stops in a row and remained committed to getting in front and staying in front of its opponents. “We just battled on the boards, all of our guys,” Marable said. “That’s what it takes against a team that just crashes the offensive board like Clover Hill does.” Although it would break Powhatan’s 13-0 run, begun by Alston’s putback in the third, with a two-handed put-in from

Walker, Clover Hill afterwards was unable to string together multiplebucket bursts and runs, and Powhatan was able to add a couple of buckets in the paint. The Indians ultimately stayed ahead of the visitors on their play from the free-throw line. Alston in the fourth quarter shot 5 for 6 from the charity stripe, and, after the Cavaliers cut his Indians’ lead to one possession, the junior pulled down a huge rebound in the closing seconds. He then drew the foul and got sent to the line, where he made both shots to put the game out of reach. Four players, including Rather, scored in double figures for Powhatan on Wednesday. Senior Jay Harris, who netted four 3s including one to tie the game before halftime, finished the night with 17 points. Wyatt made two 3s including the final goahead shot and scored 15 points. Alston, who was clutch all night and also had a game-tying 2-pointer in the second quarter, totaled 11 points. Moore also pivoted for a 2-point

shot down the middle in the second. Rather added a huge play before halftime to slash Clover Hill’s lead from 6 to 2 and put his team in a position to tie the game at 29-all. After collecting a pass from Harris, he drew the foul as he drained a 3-pointer from beyond the top point of the arc, then landed the bonus free throw. The contributions of seniors Harris, Moore,

Wyatt and Michael Washburn were honored Wednesday. Washburn played well in the first quarter and made key inbound passes that contributed to his team’s win. “I’m really happy for those guys, especially winning on Senior Night,” Marable said. “They mean everything to me,” Rather said of his seniors. “I’m sad to see them leave and everything, but it is what it is.”

He was glad that they could get the win for them in their last home game. In the preceding home game, Powhatan took a 78-56 setback to James River. Alston and Rather each netted 15 points in the loss. Harris scored 10. Powhatan’s regular season finale at Manchester High School, intially scheduled for Friday, was postponed to Tuesday due to a power outage affecting Manchester on Friday.

end it any other way. “It was really special to be able to work together for these last four years and then have the accomplishment that we had and then…the win tonight,” Avery said. “It means the world to me,” Kurtz said. “We’ve come a long way since freshman year, and it’s just good to see it finally pay off and we’ve got more to come.” BSH head boys basketball coach Chris Hamner called the two seniors “unbelievable kids” both on and off the court. “We have a saying with our team: winners win, losers lose. And that has nothing to do with basketball,” Hamner said. “Those two guys are winners at life and it just trickles onto the court.” Last Tuesday’s win marked the first time that the Knights had scored more than 80 points in a game since Jan. 28, 2015, when they routed Banner Christian 91-46. It also marked a massive turnaround from less than a month ago, when the Knights took a rough 8956 loss on the road to the Bearcats on Jan. 10. This time around, four BSH players, including Kurtz and Avery, netted double figures. Adam Angle, who transferred in this season from Monacan High School, racked up 18 points. Sophomore Zander Nadeau dropped in 11. “I just think it shows we can play with anybody in our league if we play like that,” Kurtz said. “If you had told me coming into it that we were going to give up 79, I would’ve told you we would have no chance,” Hamner said. “We just had guys making shots, making plays. Seniors rose for Senior Night. I could not be any prouder of a group of guys in my life.” Avery said they played a whole lot better defensively. “Last time it was us playing offense against them playing offense and defense,” Avery said. “We really locked down and we were able to hit shots as well. That really, really went a long way for us.” Both teams fired at the basket very well from behind the arc, with Banner Christian making 11 3-point shots and the Knights draining 10. But the Bearcats were limited to three players scoring all 79 of their points (Theo Cole led all players in the game with 34), and the Knights also shot 29 for 39 from the free throw line. Banner Christian was held to 16 free throws and made 10.

Les Johnson is presented with Cameron “Cam” Livers’ No. 24 jersey by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot seniors Raymond Avery (second from left) and James Hawkins (32) in memory of Livers, who graduated from BSH in 2016 and passed away on Jan. 16 after he was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer, renal medullary carcinoma, in Oct. 2019. Also pictured are BSH Head of School Paula Ledbetter (left) and BSH athletic director James Poore (right).

“It’s all just a mental thing. We were locked in tonight,” Hamner said. “Everybody had the same focus – all 13 guys, guys on the bench, guys that started for Senior Night that didn’t play anymore after those first two and a half minutes. If you had told me that [the Bearcats] were going to shoot 75 percent against that first group in two and a half minutes [and have us] only be down 7-0, just huge play from guys that don’t normally play, and that just kind of trickled down. “I know the score didn’t show it, but they were playing hard. They were playing their hearts out,” Hamner said of his all-senior starting five for Tuesday’s game. “I think the other guys saw them and were like, ‘Okay, we’ve got this. We can do this.’ Just a complete team win.” After their second group of five players, including seniors Kurtz and Avery, subbed in for the starters during a free throw attempt, which the Bearcats made to grow their game-opening lead to 8-0, the Knights came storming back into the picture. Kurtz knocked down early 3s and Avery flexed his speed in driving to the basket for layups. The two teams traded the lead all the way into the third quarter, when Nadeau and Avery knocked down back-toback 3s to put the Knights ahead for good. BSH went into the fourth quarter ahead 5147, and Nadeau turned a pass from Kurtz into another 3 that he made from behind the top of the key. The Knights continued to mix in successful trips to the net for layups with strong

outside shooting and a slew of free throws to steadily pull away. Angle shot 13 for 16 from the free throw line, including 8 for 10 in the fourth quarter alone. The Knights honored seven seniors: Avery, Kurtz, Nick Dawson, Ben Fleet, James Hawkins, Chase Musselman and Jake Wojahn. There was also a special remembrance before the game for late Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Class of 2016 graduate Cameron “Cam” Livers, who was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer, renal medullary carcinoma in Oct. 2019 and passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16. Head of School Paula Ledbetter described Livers as the sweetest, nicest and kindest young man, and while he wasn’t in the spotlight, she said that he worked very hard athletically and academically. She described him as having a great laugh, a great smile and a great sense of humor. In Livers’ memory, Avery and Hawkins got to present his jersey to dad Les Johnson. “He was my coach back on JV, and ever since, we’ve had a really close relationship,” Avery said of Johnson. “It’s unimaginable to hear about Cameron. It was the least we could do. “I thought it was something really special we could do to honor Cameron.” The Knights last Monday beat St. Michael the Archangel behind 21 points from Avery and 20 points from Kurtz. Friday’s game at Kenston Forest School was postponed to tonight at 6 p.m.
