Comprehensive plan passes first hurdle By Laura McFarland Editor

OWHATAN – The Powhatan County Planning Commission has unanimously voted to recommend an updated draft of the county’s longrange comprehensive plan that will now go for review to the board of supervisors. During the planning commission’s meeting on Tuesday, April 6, the group voted 5-0 in favor of recommending the county’s visionary document, which they have been working on since fall 2020. The comprehensive plan establishes a vision of what Powhatan County should look like in 20 to 30 years. It identifies objectives and strategies that can be implemented to realize the community’s vision. The current comprehensive plan was adopted on June 24, 2019, after nearly three years of review by the planning commission and board of supervisors. But in August 2020, the current board of supervisors expressed interest in updating the plan and charged the planning commission with starting the reviewing process. While the planning commission discussed a wide variety of topics in their review of the comprehensive plan, per the supervisors’ request, where the members spent the most time and are recommending significant changes is in the chapters on Transportation and Land Use and Community Character, with particular emphasis on the Countywide Future Land Use Map.

When planning director Andrew Pompei introduced the topic of the comprehensive plan at the meeting he pointed out that one of the main purposes of the document for the planning commission is in the area of land use cases. In their review of cases, the members have to decide if requests for rezonings, conditional use permits, and other land use decisions are in line with the vision set forward in the comprehensive plan. “It is an advisory document; it is not a law. But it provides recommendations, again, on how the county will grow and develop,” he said. The current draft of the 2021 Comprehensive Plan Update draft text may be found at http://powhatanva. gov/268/Community-Development. During the April 6 meeting, the members made a few minor changes to the document before voting to recommend it. The commissioners added language early in the document making clear that the zoning districts and some references to development-related ordinances may change as updates to the zoning ordinance are made in the future to reflect the new comprehensive plan. They also voted unanimously to make changes to the future land use map to clearly mark public land on the map of the Courthouse Village Special Area Plan. Chairwoman Vicki Hurt commended the planning commission and staff memsee PLAN, pg. 6

Blood drives in coming months offer opportunities to save lives By Laura McFarland Editor

POWHATAN – The Powhatan community is being asked to come out and help save lives with a good number of American Red Cross Blood Drives being held in the county or nearby in the coming months. After a year where every aspect of the Red Cross operations was impacted to make sure it could safely hold community events, organizers are happy to see more civic organizations, churches, and businesses once again stepping up to

host blood drives in their communities, said Jonathan McNamara, regional communications director. For the better part of a year, many of those groups simply did not feel comfortable opening their doors for blood drives or didn’t have the facilities since bloodmobiles are not currently in use, he said. But with more safety measures in place and an increasing percentage of the population receiving the various COVID-19 vaccines, those organizations’ comfort levels are changing, allowing for a variety of see BLOOD, pg. 4

POWHATAN – What do a Wookiee, a baseball eating dog, and Rodents of Unusual Size have in common? They are all coming to the Silver Screen in Powhatan soon. The Powhatan Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Department are teaming up this summer for the new Movies in May series. The outdoor movie series will be held in the Village Meadow Field over three consecutive Saturdays to give the community the opportunity to gather for fun evenings out watching classic movie under the stars, said Angie Cabell, the chamber’s executive director. The schedule for the movie series will see “Star Wars” playing on May 1, “The Sandlot” on May 8, and “The Princess Bride” on May 15. Gates to the field, which is located at 3920 Marion Harland Lane, open at 6:30 p.m. with the movies beginning at dark, or about 8:30 p.m. “Really it is just the opportunity to

come together as a community. After the last year, everyone, whether it is a business owner or not, is interested in coming together for some fun and fellowship. The chamber board felt that movie nights

would provide this opportunity for the whole family,” Cabell said. The cost to attend the films is $10 per carload of people, cash only, but this is not a drive-in movie. People may bring blankets and chairs to sit in the field and watch the outdoor movie. Parking will be in the Rescue Squad field. The evenings will include certain vendors on hand selling light concessions and drinks, including Scoops Ice Cream, Three Crosses Distillery, Byrd Cellars, and more, Cabell said. Spring and summer usually offer a wealth of activities for families to get out and enjoy each other and their community, but that is still distinctly missing this year. So when the idea came up to do a summer movie series, new chamber board member Teresa Melton liked it so much she offered to be one of the sponsors of the series as an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Home Service PenFed Realty. Melton said she doesn’t always like attending large group events, but she has see MOVIES, pg. 4

Keep Virginia Beautiful seeks applicants for Green Grants Program Applications open for groups looking to make environmental impact in community Contributed Report RICHMOND – Keep Virginia Beautiful (KVB) springs into action awarding 35 grants in 30 days during June for environmental improvement projects. The 30 in 30 Green Grants Program is open to businesses, schools, counties, towns and service organizations looking to make a positive environmental impact in their communities. “Our Green Grants Program is an opportunity for everyone,” said Mike Baum, executive director of Keep Virginia Beautiful. “We consider grants ranging from restaurants that want to start their own backyard gardens, to libraries that want to introduce programs to teach kids about recycling, to nonprofits that need fluorescent vests to ensure safer community cleanups. We’ve provided these types of grants for the last decade and we’re really excited about the impact they’ve had on communities and the environment.”

Awards will be announced via social media and the KVB website each day during the month of June. Because 2020 was a year that brought the national spotlight to diversity, equity, and inclusion, a special focus of this year’s Green Grants will add five additional grant awards specifically to diverse groups and underserved populations. This will raise the grant award commitment to 35 grants in 30 days. KVB appreciates the generous support of this year’s sponsors: Altria, Coca-Cola, WestRock, and Keep America Beautiful. G OV E R N M E N T B R I E F Economic Development Authority requirements altered Governor Ralph Northam recently approved a bill that amends the Code of Virginia to allow a reduction in the number of members who serve on Powhatan’s Economic Development Authority (EDA). The bill, which was patroned by Del. R. Lee Ware, R-65, reduces the number of required members from seven to five that may be appointed to the economic development authority board by Powhatan County and reduces the quorum requirement to three members. The reduction in membership was

one of the items on the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors’ 2021 Legislative Priorities list when the members met with Ware and State Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, on Dec. 10, 2020. The change makes it more consistent with the makeup of Powhatan’s five-member board of supervisors, planning commission, board of zoning appeals and five electoral districts. In addition, the county has found it challenging at times to recruit individuals to serve on boards and commissions.

Hello Everyone my name is Missy, and I am a older lady around 10 years old. I belonged to a elderly family, and they took really good care of me, but unfortunately with their health they had to make the terrible decision to surrender me. Even tho I am a older lady I still have a lot of energy, and spunk. I honestly at times act like I am about 8 years younger. I love toys, Missy treats and lots of attention. I do get along with other dogs, I just need a slow introduction, and someone to be patient with me as I learn the ropes. I was kept outside, So my life was spent on a chain, but I have gotten quite spoiled here with the AC, and the warmth during the winter time, and of course the loving that I am receiving. I am spayed and up to date on my shots, and Heartworm Negative. blood drives being offered. “It really lined up with the rest of society. As we started to see more people vaccinated, as we started to see more people comfortable with getting back into these types of environments, that really starts to line up with more people being willing to host drives,” he said. “That is really critical, because as society opens up more, more people are going to the doctor for the first time in a while and more people might be hitting the road for the first time in a while. “All of those things lead to an increase in the demand for blood. Elective surgeries pick up and you are unfortunately going to see more people diagnosed with cancer. More people get in car accidents. We as an organization need to plan for that,” he said. The Powhatan Moose Lodge at 4140 Old Buckingham Road, got an early start with two blood drives held in March and two a month planned every month through June. Upcoming dates are from 1 to 6 p.m. on April 20, May 4 and 18, and June 1 and 15. Passion Community Church at 4480 Anderson Highway will have a drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 21 and June 30. Two Moseley churches will also hold events. Parkway Baptist Church, 8508 Beaver Bridge Road, Moseley, has three drives, scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. on April 15,

even noticed that she has missed it and felt the movies series, the way it was planned at one affordable price for a carload of people, was good value for

noon to 5 p.m. on May 27 and June 10, and Spring Creek Baptist Church, 5130 Woolridge Road, Moseley, has one from 2 to 7 p.m. on June 22. All of these drives will be held inside at the locations since the Red Cross is currently not using its bloodmobiles. However, McNamara said there is discussion going on about getting the use of those vehicles back for blood drives this summer, which would make a huge difference in the places where drives could be held since not every location has the capability of hosting an indoor event. “That opens up the ability to go to a completely different type of business,” he said. “It is a different environment and allows us to have a little more flexibility with partners.” Over the course of the past year, the Red Cross has been hit hard by the lack of blood drives it could safely hold, McNamara said. High schools and colleges were always a huge supporter of blood drives, as were many businesses. When many of them began operating remotely or instituting strict guidelines, holding drives there wasn’t possible. Even when drives could be safely held, as an organization, the Red Cross also had to work extremely hard to convince people that donating blood was safe, McNamara said. That meant being open and deliberate about sharing not only the continued need but the methods the organization was using to pro-

tect those who were willing to participate. Measures included wearing masks, social distancing, screening, sanitization efforts, and always having scheduled appointments instead of walk-in appointments. One feature the Red Cross offered during the pandemic was free antibody testing to check to see if someone had already been exposed to COVID-19, he said. “That was something that allowed us to maintain, but it really was a very challenging time. The businesses that stepped up and opened their doors to help us were really key in helping us maintain the blood supply and avoid a second health care crisis, which would have been in place if we couldn’t supply the blood to the hospitals that they needed to treat patients – not only dealing with COVID but the types of things that don’t take a break just because you are dealing with a pandemic,” he said. For those interested in donating blood or finding another way to volunteer with the Red Cross, visit www.redcrossblood.org. Those wanting to donate may also download the Red Cross app and complete the entire process there. families. “I think it will be great for the community and I think people will appreciate a chance to get out and enjoy their family and friends outdoors in a community setting. We are

starved for it,” she said. Cabell said updates will be posted to a Facebook event page for Movies in May, which can be found at www.facebook. com/ events/762891547751545.

Virtual natural resources summer camp registration open for high schoolers Contributed Report The Virginia Department of Forestry and the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts are sponsoring a virtual natural resources summer camp for current high school students. Scheduled for Monday, July 12 to Friday, July 16, the Virginia Academy of Natural Resources virtual camp will explore natural resource topics, careers, and activities. The themes include wildlife, forestry, soils, and aquatics. There will be live presentations held each morning by natural resource professionals, followed by daily independent assignments. These assignments will come with instructions and materials for campers to keep. These assignments are intended to connect

campers with the nature around them. There will also be a small group project and a competition at the end of the week that models the Virginia Dominion Energy Envirothon. Current ninth to 12thgraders may register for camp at https://forms. gle/9mRUtyoaPRvFQY2 N9. The cost is $25 for field study materials, but there are scholarships available. For questions about the camp or financial assistance, email ellen. powell@dof.virginia.gov. Monacan Soil & Water Conservation District is offering five scholarships to reimburse the camp fees once the camp participant has completed the camp. For questions about reimbursement for camp fees, contact Monacan SWCD at 804-556-4936.

PLAN Continued from pg. 1

bers for the work they did on the document and the speed with which they were able to come up with the revisions.

Land Use and Community Character One of the big changes in the Land Use and Community Character section deals with the revision and renaming of some land use designations, Pompei said in a separate interview. The changes made by the commission give names that clearly describe the types of desired uses and development possibilities within those areas. They also create more distinction between the land use designation names and zoning district names, which sometimes caused confusion because they were the same. Some of the examples Pompei gave include the Gateway Business, which would be closely aligned with the old Commerce Center designation. Gateway Business areas are appropriate for offices and light industrial development (clean manufacturing, research and development, and similar light industrial uses) along or near major thoroughfares, according to the comprehensive plan draft. The recommended draft no longer has a designation for Village Center, which were areas where mixed use developments combining residential and commercial offerings were desired. In the updated version of the Village area, the main designations are Village and Corridor Mixed Use. Village generally applies to areas surrounding the historic Powhatan County Courthouse, which “can accommodate small-scale, pedestrian-friendly mixed-use development that complements existing development within the Courthouse Village.” Corridor Mixed Use accommodates mixed-use development along or near Route 60 and Route 13, serving as a transition

Historic Powhatan church welcomes new pastor Contributed Report Providence Presbyterian Church on Ridge Road in western Powhatan County welcomed a new pastor on March 1. The Rev. Albert Connette has begun serving with this historic church that was organized in 1825. Connette is a native of North Carolina and graduate of Davidson College and Union Presbyterian Seminary. He is married to poet and UVA professor Charlotte Matthews and has two grown children and stepchildren. Connette had served churches in Front Royal and Waynesboro before a 24-year ministry with the Olivet Presbyterian Church in western Albemarle County. He comes to Providence after taking a year off for writing, renovations on an older home, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. Connette says he is “excited about his ministry with the Providence congregation, serving the Powhatan community, and getting acquainted with fellow bird-

between the core Courthouse Village and surrounding areas. A combination of land uses, such as commercial (retail, offices, services, etc.), institutional, and residential uses, may be considered, according to the document. The current plan currently has designations for both Rural Preservation and Rural Residential. The recommended draft consolidated those designation, which makes up the vast majority of the county, into the catchall Rural Areas. This version of the plan also removes the Rural Enterprise Zone designation, as there has been limited interest in that designation since it was added to the current version. Pompei pointed out that better descriptions and more data and images were added to the land use designations to create a clear picture of the kind of growth and development the county wants to see. For instance in the Neighborhood Residential descriptions, it outlines ways the county can encourage developers to propose projects that are more unique. One tool is the idea of agrihoods, which are residential developments oriented around a working farm (or other agricultural use). Open space areas feature vegetable farms, orchards, community gardens, or other agricultural uses compatible with surrounding residential uses. “I think a lot of the conversation on development has focused on the form of development. How can we encourage developers to create projects that are the appropriate scale and appearance that reflect Powhatan County’s character,” Pompei said. “I don’t think we want projects that look like they could be in Chesterfield or Henrico or anywhere else in Virginia. We want projects that are really unique to Powhatan and help make Powhatan an attractive destination and place to live.” The commissioners spent a good deal of time looking at the county’s three growth areas, with particular emphasis on the Village

watchers in the county.” Providence Presbyterian Church, a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation, is a warm

MAPS COURTESY OF POWHATAN COUNTY

Some of the changes made to the comprehensive plan update recommended by the planning commission are to the Countywide Future Land Use Map. Key changes were made in the growth areas: the Route 60 East Future Land Use Map, top left, the Courthouse Village map, top right, and the Route 711 Village map.

and on Route 60 East. In the Route 60 Corridor East Special Area Plan, they identified commercial nodes, which are areas surrounding major signalized intersections with existing commercial development, Pompei said. They have been identified as areas that are appropriate for businesses that have a greater reliance on visibility and drive-by traffic. However, the county would seek high architectural standards and cohesion in these areas. “Outside of the nodes, development is encouraged to have more significant landscape buffers as screens from the roadway to help protect the rural character of the corridor,” he said. Along with the changes to the land use designations were the areas that were included in those areas on the Countywide Future Land Use Map. Some of the changes that were made include removing areas from the Route 60 East growth area, including parcels along New Dorset Road between Dorset Road and Swift

Creek and parcels located along Page Road between Old Powhatan Estates and Stonehenge Farm Road. The commission reduced the size of the Courthouse Village Special Area Plan growth area on the map leaving a gap between the core Courthouse Village and Plain View along Route 60 and Route 13 and removing portions of Fighting Creek Park.

Transportation In the transportation section of the plan, one of the big changes came with how the projects on the county’s Major Thoroughfare Plan are organized. In total, the county has $1.13 billion worth of projects on the plan, and the board categorized them into four different types: Intersection Improvements, Thoroughfare Improvements, New Connections, and Multimodal Improvements, Pompei said. Projects within each category address a different component of the local transportation network.

The previous plan did not have a Multimodal Connections Section, which relates to the growing interest in accommodating different transportation options, such as sidewalks, trails, and bicycle lanes. The updated plan also revised the descriptions of priority levels (Short-Term Priorities, Long-Term Projects, and Visionary Projects), based upon estimated costs, project location, project status, potential impacts, and previously-completed funding applications. “The prioritization system is really intended to emphasize those projects that the county wants to pursue in the short terms with the expected amount of funding that will be realistically available. I think the planning commission saw that prioritization as a good way to help the public know which improvements they are likely to see now or in the next 10 years versus which improvements might be longer-term projects,” Pompei said.

Blood drives are a vital way to help others By Laura McFarland Editor

F

rom one needle to the next, my right arm isn’t very happy with me right now. In the April 7 edition of the Powhatan Today, I wrote about my experience getting my first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This week, I am back to the subject of needles. Only instead of putting something in my arm, this particular needle was taking something out. I gave blood during an American Red Cross Blood Drive held April 6 at the Powhatan Moose Family Center. I used to be a fairly regular donor but will readily admit this was the first time I have given blood since before the pandemic. My preparation actually started before it was time to donate. The Red Cross asks that people get ready by getting a good night’s sleep the night before donating, eating healthy foods, and drinking extra liquids. Since the Red Cross also checks your hemoglobin before you are allowed to donate to make sure your iron levels are high enough, they advise you eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet with foods rich in iron and high in vitamin C. You can find a list of those foods and other things to know before donating at https://www.redcrossblood. org/donate-blood/blood-donation-process/before-during-after.html. I mention this because I saw someone in front of me who couldn’t donate because of low iron. Having had it happen to me in the past when I was ready and willing to donate, I know it can be disappointing. My appointment was at 3:30 p.m., and I showed up

on time. A smiling woman greeted me when I walked through the front door, signed me in, and took my temperature. Then she showed me inside a larger room where the blood drive was being held since the Red Cross is currently not sending out its bloodmobiles. I am going to go on a tangent of something I didn’t do and regret now. When I got the reminder call the day before I donated, the woman on the phone told me I had the option to download the free Red Cross app and use the RapidPass option to speed up my sign-in by answering the screening questions they always ask you. The questions have to be filled out on the day of your donation. I forgot about the option and went the route of reading the printed materials and sitting at their little computer to answer the questions. I had no problem doing that. I didn’t even mind when another man who arrived after me and used RapidPass finished donating before me. The reason I mind now is because I have since downloaded the app and taken a look at what it offers. In addition to being able to schedule donations, you can manage your appointments and track your donation history (starting once you use the app). But the coolest feature is only available for appointments made in the app. The Blood Journey option shows the journey from your donation to completion, meaning when it was used to help someone. I was told by a Red Cross representative that it even shows how it was used, such as to help a cancer patient or an accident victim. I know they tell you every time you donate that you could be saving three lives, but I think actually seeing how it helped would bring that message home even more. So, yeah, next time I donate I am doing it all through

Remembering brave warriors who fought in ‘Nixon’s Army’ By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Our nation recently celebrated a day of remembrance for all of the men and women who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War. I noticed the post on Facebook announcing the day’s significance, and also noted the small number of responses to its posting. I wasn’t surprised. I’ve lived long enough to see a generation that once decried the war and all associated with it transformed into adults with a much fuller acceptance and even appreciation for those who served. In fact, for those of us who lived through those years, Vietnam remains a defining event in our lives, and few of us escaped its effects, one way of the other. But, for many of our friends, the war was a much stronger dose of reality, like to the soldier in the photo located under the post, placed there by friends. The young soldier sat on a pile of supplies, somewhere in South Vietnam. I instantly recognized the face. It was the brother of my best friend in high school. We had an additional connection. Decades earlier, both of us found ourselves huddled among a mass of rowdy draft-eligible candidates at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Richmond waiting in line to take a physical that ensured impending doom. “We’re all going to fight in Nixon’s Army,” a young man yelled as he searched for the end of the long procession of one-step away draftees. We looked at each other as a short-haired man walked along the line, pausing only to jerk an unsuspecting candidate out of the group. What was already a bad day for all of us became much worse for them as we learned that, for one of the few times in American history, the Marines also were using the draft to enlist new inductees. We avoided the ire of the irritated Marine

and passed through the physical without delay. It was the type of exam that is not easy to fail. I left the physical with a clear plan. Without delay, I hightailed it back to college and obtained a much-needed exemption. My friend, however, was not so lucky. After several months of basic training and a short visit home, he was on his way to Vietnam. Thankfully, he made it home safe and sound, seemingly unaffected by his combat experiences. But, I also have memories of standing in front of an open coffin and viewing a high school friend in full dress blues, felled by a single bullet to the head in an unfamiliar jungle for reasons he couldn’t possibly understand. It was my first Vietnam experience. Sadly, other classmates enlisted and paid the ultimate sacrifice, and few of us escaped those years without being touched in some manner by the war and the men and women who served. In many cases, their service in those intolerable conditions was only the first in a series of challenges for these young soldiers. They returned home to a nation all too willing to forget a war that some considered a defeat. Somehow, their immense service was demeaned and discounted, and braveness and heroism became intertwined with politics and policy. Today, we recognize our shortcomings as a nation, and we celebrate our Vietnam Veterans with the same reverence we endow on all our service men and women. The day of remembrance and recognition is well-deserved, but the heartfelt appreciation of a nation goes even deeper to heal wounds. So, to all those across a nation who made that trip to the Courthouse for mass physicals and promptly received draft notices, I give my personal thanks and gratitude for their service. And for the thousands of others who served and sacrificed in a war that had few cheerleaders, the nation has finally issued its overdue message of thanks and appreciation. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax:804-344-8746

the app. After I was fully checked in, I was taken over to one of the donation beds and my arm readied by a cheerful woman named Amanda. She completed the process pretty quickly and mostly painlessly. While I waited for her to help me, she finished the process of the man sitting next to me. Because of the proximity, I couldn’t help but hear that his actual donation process took just under five minutes, which actually wasn’t the fastest of the day. Because I had nothing to do but sit there and squeeze a little ball, I, of course, then wondered how long my donation would take. Not that anyone asked, but it was seven minutes and 37 seconds. Before I knew it, I was walking back out the door with a packet of Nutter Butters, a too-tight bandage around my arm, and the knowledge that I had done something to help people in my community. When I said earlier that I was disappointed in the past when a low iron level meant I couldn’t donate, I meant it. I have not yet needed a blood transfusion, but I know people whose lives have been saved by one. I praise God for the people who donated the blood that helped my loved ones in their time of need, and hope I can return the favor by being the answer to someone else’s prayers. If you haven’t already seen the story about the blood drives scheduled in Powhatan or nearby on page 1A, please consider taking a look. There is always a need for blood, and with people traveling more, which unfortunately leads to an increase in accidents, and having more elective surgeries, the need will likely only increase in the coming months. L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Dasvidaniya and happy honeymoon: a reimagined conversation with Bernie Dear Editor, In Powhatan, while hanging four-foot LED work lights in my new garage (new to me), I was thinking back to the recent discussion with my grown son in my Caravan on the drive back from a funeral. Sometime during the course of our back-and-forth he professed to be a Bernie Sanders fan. “Bernie’s a closet communist,” I stated. “No he’s not, he’s a democratic socialist,” my son replied. “A distinction without a difference,” I enjoined. “You know he was going to have his honeymoon in Russia, right?” My son didn’t say anything. He was mulling that over. I could see wisps of smoke. Which got me to thinking. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall as Bernie first began his spiel with Mary Jane O’Meara. It probably went something like this. “Honeybun, I think we should talk about marriage.” “Oh, Bernie, that would make me sooooo happy.” “Me too, my little turtle dove. And I was considering where we should go on our honeymoon.” “Oooo, warm Caribbean sand, hot sun, blue sky and blue water, and a little pink umbrella in my tall Pina Colada,” crooned Mary Jane. “And fire spitters. Don’t forget the fire spitters.” “I was thinking Russia.” “Russia? You’re kidding?”

“Nope. Moscow…,” “No warm Caribbean sand?” “…Red Square…,” “No hot sun?” “…Lenin’s Tomb…,” “No blue sky and blue water?” “…and maybe Leningrad, afterwards.” “Wait, what? Lenin’s Tomb! No Pina Coladas with little pink umbrellas?” “Vodka. Lot of vodka. Na zdorovie. And a sweltering sauna bath. Naked bodies and splish-splashing in ice-cold water afterwards. Then, fluffy warm towels, bushka.” “Bernie, is this another fantasy of yours just like Nicaragua and Cuba?” “No Natasha - I mean Mary Jane - we could even go to Yaroslavl on the Volga river and see how the city’s 600,000 proletariat live. We’ll compare notes between our countries on housing and health care. It’ll be a hootand-a-half.” “Bernie, have you been eating too many medicinal brownies again?” “No, my little turnip. I am unanimous on this. Just think of the benefits of the cultural exchanges between us and them.” “No Pina Coladas?” “Only if they’re made with vodka.” “Then, bye-bye, Bernie. I’m outta here.” It could of happened that way. Joe Ondishko Powhatan County

Monacan SWCD continues to fund conservation Contributed Report This year has been a rough one. Not only on people, but the land has suffered also. All of the heavy rain in the last 15 months has caused gullies across many of the crop fields. The pastures and streambanks have been beat down by grazing livestock and many of the nutrients have been flushed from our soils. The Monacan Soil and Water District (SWCD) is currently assisting farmers and landowners to correct these problems this spring. Monacan has received funding from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) through the Virginia

Agricultural Conservation Program to install best management practices on these problem areas. Common practices for this area include controlling crop field erosion and stabilizing eroding streambanks, establishing stream fencing and buffer areas, establishing rotational grazing and nutrient management. Technical assistance is provided to plan what is needed, how to install it, as well as financial assistance to pay a large portion of the cost. Information on this program and how to obtain funding can be obtained by contacting the Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District at 804556-4936.

POWHATAN – The contents of a local trash truck caught fire early Friday morning in Powhatan and were spilled out on Route 60, causing delays for several hours while it was cleaned up. A little after 6:20 a.m. on April 9, Powhatan County Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 call from the driver, who had just finished picking up trash from dumpsters at several Powhatan business, said Phil Warner, fire and rescue chief. The driver noticed a burning smell coming from the cargo container and pulled over to call 911 for help on Route 60 westbound just west of Red

Fire and rescue made the decision to pour the contents out on the side of the road to make it easier to fight the fire and avoid the truck catching fire, Warner said. Warner expressed his appreciation to Royall Pump and Well, which loaned a backhoe and an operator to the efforts to break up the trash and make it easier to fight the fire. One lane of traffic was closed for cleanup for an extended period of time, Warner said. The source of the fire is not known.

New Horizon has added Uriel Cohen and Douglas

Mitchell to its board of directors following the resignation of six of its 11 directors in connection with the consolidation, as had been agreed to by CSBH and New Horizon. The boards of directors of each of CSBH and New Horizon now consist of the previous five New Horizon directors that remained on the New Horizon Board and Cohen and Mitchell. In addition, Mitchell has been appointed president and chief executive officer of New Horizon and Brian K. Grizzard, the former president and chief executive officer of New Horizon, has been appointed chief lending officer. “New Horizon has developed an excellent reputation in the community. We intend to continue to support the bank’s commit-

ment to the local economy, and maintain the high standard of service they provide to the bank’s customers. The bank will retain the New Horizon Bank brand and all of the bank employees. For Blessed Sacrament Huguenot volleyball, the future is looking bright. The extremely young program, coached for the second year by Alyssa Winters and featuring sophomores as the oldest players, excelled this season by going undefeated across seven matches at the JV level. “It was definitely huge for the program going forward, more than anything,” Winter said. “It was great to get the girls confidence, and next year, they’re going to step up to the varsity level, and I feel that this year was a really good foundation for them.” It was transition year for the Knights, too, to not only play at a higher level at JV, but also transition their on-court mentality from middle-school play of just bumping and passing the ball to “bump-set-spike,” Winters added. “That was our big focus, which is really going to help us go in to play at a varsity level next year,” Winters said. “We really shifted our mentality this year to really run a stronger offense instead of just sending the ball back over

ference’s eight-man league; and then made even shorter by a two-week pause for the Knights’ athletic programs. But the young Knights were able to grow and develop through that stretch of games, and they embraced the chance to: gain valuable experience; assess where they are; and figure out what they still need to work on going into this upcoming fall season, with weight training set to begin in June. “It was imperative that we got out there and played and got at least something in for the kids (after) all the work they’ve put in, and the stopping and starting and not knowing with a certainty what was going to happen,” said Blessed Sacrament Huguenot head football coach Gary Brock. “It was a godsend really to be able to play some, because we didn’t know what some of these young kids could do, and to get playing time was just a really fantastic plus to be able to evaluate them and see what they could do in in-game situations, and then also to correct and get them (going) in the right direction when we start the season.” He added: “Having practice for the whole year and then finally getting the chance to do something and having the kids right there is really, really a plus, because you get close with them,” Brock said. “It was very beneficial for us all the way around.” Making the transition from wide receiver to quarterback this season, junior Zander Nadeau really surprised his coaches. “We didn’t know how effective he’d be back there, and he just exceeded all expectations right there as far as his throwing ability and running the ball, and just his leadership out there in the huddle,” Brock said of Nadeau. “The biggest thing that I think was in his favor, the big plus, is how quickly he learned to pull the ball down and run as opposed to taking a sack or putting us in a deficit… as far as the offense went. That’s a hard thing to teach unless the kid has a lot of natural ability, and he’s a good athlete.” Brock said that junior utility player Josh Decker was their “ace in the hole” coming in. “We knew that he was a hard runner, we knew that he was going to carry the brunt of the running attack – he knew it as well, he trained for it, he worked hard – and when we went into each ball game, we figured he was probably going to carry the ball somewhere between 15 and 20 times,” Brock said of Decker. “He’s durable, he’s like a bull in a china shop…and he proved us right. He was very effective for us.” Counting the Knights’ game versus Kenston Forest, Decker averaged 126 yards a game. He scored six touchdowns rushing and added two TDs receiving. Brock added that Decker worked hard to become a good receiver “and a threat there” for the Knights. Complementing Decker in the backfield were freshman Hunter Case, who

gained valuable experience as one of the main running backs, and transfer Julian Alcazar, who, despite not running as much, learned the Knights’ system as a new player and became a threat as far as catching the ball. Brock was also very proud of the Knights’ defense. “They had so much adversity this year…I think they met every challenge head-on and really went after it all the time,” Brock said. “This team was resilient. They were probably more focused than a lot of ball clubs I’ve seen…they were right on-point every time when we got ready for a ballgame. They were focused.” And the experience they gained this year, he added, is going to come into play this coming fall. “We’ve got a lot of positions solidified now that we probably would’ve had to experiment a little bit more in the fall

had we played then (without playing this spring),” Brock said, “so when we come into camp, we feel pretty good.” Projected defensive returners include Garrett Musselman, who according to Brock has gotten stronger and more knowledgeable on offensive line, as well as Harrison Lee, who shined in his move from outside linebacker to safety as he caught one interception apiece in the Knights’ games versus Southampton Academy and Broadwater Academy. “He really gave us some strength back there,” Brock said of Lee. “He’s a good tackler, and also he’s learning – he had a good education as far as pass-defense this year playing back there at safety. I think it’s going to serve him very well next year.” Decker should also continue to play both ways, having done well at linebacker in addition to excelling at running back. the net. That was really big for the program this year…we spent a lot of time working to get to that level.” This year’s team featured 13 players, with Winters noting that she didn’t cut anyone. “We kept everyone on board and made it work,” she said, “and got everyone playing time and experience, and won games.” This year’s Knights did have newcomers, as Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s enrollment increased this year. One of the new players, however, was a familiar face within the school’s athletic program, as sophomore Madelyn Mitchell – a standout on the varsity girls basketball team – started playing BSH volleyball this spring. The team’s leading attackers from a spiking standpoint were Whitney Polster and Charlie Potter, and Winters said that the whole team’s serves were “just bullets.” She noted that they could hit different spots with their serves, and that they were “really giving it all they have” when they were serving. Defensively, Sophie Thompson was a critical part of playing in the back row for serve-receives and digs, and the Knights utilized two setters because they wanted one setter who could play in the front row and hit as well. “It definitely worked out well for the group of girls that I have in that standpoint,” Winters said. One of the setters was Colleen

And despite being new to the volleyball program, Mitchell was named one of the team captains. “She’s just very inspirational…she really kept the team motivated,” Winters said of Mitchell. “You can tell she’s a competitive player just outside of volleyball. She brought a lot to the team just from a leadership and a competitive and a teamwork atmosphere, which is very important for a team to be successful, to have somebody step up and lead the team like that.”

One of the Knights’ biggest victories this season came against Kenston Forest School. That was a tough game for them, Winters said, but the Knights won the match 2-1. “Kenston’s always really good, and that was probably our most challenging game,” Winters said. “Some of my girls walked in not sure how things were going to go…it was really good to see them go out and play their game and show that they can compete with anybody, and not only just compete, but come out with a win.” In addition to the work that the Knights put into their practices, several of the student-athletes play at Richmond Volleyball Club and compete in travel volleyball. Winters had also encouraged the players to watch college

year who scored a defensive touchdown on a fumble against Southampton Academy, should also continue to improve, and Gage Smith, who had a team-leading nine tackles versus Broadwater, will look to build on his strong play at linebacker. The Knights, however, will miss senior Zach Miles, who was a leader both on defense and up front on the offensive line this year. He was a force as far as opening holes on the offense for his teammates to run through, according to his coach. Miles also had at least one sack or fumble recovery in the three consecutive home games that BSH played from Feb. 27 to March 27. They’ll also miss senior Michael Timmons who contributed to the Knights’ secondary and return game. He helped create a deflected pass that was intercepted by his teammate Harrison Lee versus Broadwater. While playing at home this season, the Knights: shut out Southampton Academy 32-0; was a late-game, redzone turnover away from challenging for the win in a 26-21 setback to Halifax Academy after scoring 21 straight points; and racked up six touchdowns in a 60-41 loss to Broadwater Academy. Halifax ended the season 5-1, and Broadwater stayed undefeated at 4-0. “We proved to ourselves basically that we can work with these better teams in the league,” Brock said. “I feel like we could hang with them – it’s just that you can’t make mistakes, and we made some mistakes that were characteristic of a young team, and we’ve just got to put that behind us and go on and get better at what we do.” Brock also praised the team’s character, as well as its resilience to come back in its games versus Halifax and Broadwater. And in his 44 years of coaching, Brock said he enjoyed coaching this team as well as any team he’s ever had. The young team will look to improve its kicking game, offensive line, team speed and strength going into the new season. “When you’re young and you’re trying to learn, the playing field – it doesn’t forgive very easily,” Brock said, while adding of his Knights: “The lessons they learned this year are going to sure help us in the fall.”

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot junior Josh Decker runs the football as a Southampton Academy player attempts to tackle him.

volleyball games in order to become more familiar with the game. Players on this year’s JV team will get the chance to take that huge step together to varsity next school year. “It’s super-exciting,” Winters said. “At least for the past two years, we haven’t had a varsity program, so I’m excited to see these girls move up and take that challenge on and really represent BSH, and show that BSH can compete with anyone in the conference.” The biggest thing to look forward to with this team, Winters said, is that they’ve gotten accustomed to winning. “I look for them to take that mentality and that confidence going forward,” she said. “Even as we’re transferring into a more competitive environment playing at a varsity level, I look for these girls to be ready to transition to that higher level of play – and not only transition and compete, but also, I really feel like they’re going to take the confidence and the excitement and – once you get a taste of winning in a competitive environment – I just think it’s going to spiral into the future for them.” Winters said they’re also looking at some team camps that they can attend this summer to help prepare the players for the transition to varsity in the fall. “They’re a great group of girls,” Winters said of the players. ”They spend a lot of time together. They do a lot of bonding, too – something that’s very important with the group of girls that I have, that – outside of practice, outside of the classroom, they’re very connected and work very well together.”
