INTRODUCTION Studio Brief
TERRITORIAL SEA | ISLAND INFRASTRUCTURE: Econology of the coastline Trajectory #2 >>> Swimming, floating, fishing, sinking, how to rethink Hong Kong’s territorial water? PLATFORM: Ecologies KEYWORDS: Networked ecologies, Border infrastructure, Territorial sea, Island laboratory,Subsistance, Architectural ethnography, Coastal landscape, Seasons, tides and moon LOCATION: Cape d’Aguilar, Po Toi archipelago, South China Sea, Hong Kong / China STUDIO STATEMENT With more than 250 islands, mostly uninhabited, and fifty percent of the territory composed of water, Hong Kong has the potential to re-invent a positive future where human economies are re-balanced with new territorial ecologies. In this context, islands are fragments of land that are barely used, or rather, their various forms of occupation have often been kept secret by the successive Hong Kong governments. Rehabilitation center for drug addicts, lownuclear waste management plant, isolated refugee camps, islands have since long been used for hosting the leftover of our societies. The main objective of the studio is to re-territorialize those forgotten or invisible territories by defining a liquid trajectory starting from Cape d’Aguilar and HKU Marine biology department, passing through Stanley to join the Po Toi Islands. Those various sites opportunities should allow the development of multiple possible futures, beyond simple capitalistic and other materialistic perspective. BACKGROUND In Hong Kong, communities living on/by the water are still very active, protected by little bays around the islands of Sai Kung or Lantau area. They appear as single entities, disconnected from the others, even when located in the vicinity of small urban settlements. Their floating infrastructures are made with simple materials, a mix of bamboo, fabrics and plastic containers. They appear as fragile group of platforms ready to be swept away by the next typhoon, especially when compared to the enormous weight of the estates and buildings on land. Yet, it is their diversity, flexibility and fluidity that have allowed these structures to last for hundreds of years – surviving climatic pressures, political movements, border lines, wars, and economic crisis. In opposition to the (unstable) land, water has often played the role of a peaceful shelter for poor and endangered communities to take refuge. Little bays, or agea in Greek according to Aristotle (Historia Animalium. IX, 622a: 2-10. About 400 BC), are an archetype of comfort geography, providing sustainable protection for a population. As a result, their principal relation with the land has mainly been trade, creating a positive ecological complement to their land dwelling neighbors – for example, trading fish or salt for rice or fabrics.

MAPPING Territorial Sea/ Coastline Above Level
Po Toi and its surrounding is a place of high ecological value and special scientific interest. Let’s imagine the scenario of Po Toi as a protected country park with numerous recreational and cultural activities. During the mapping, there are three vertical levels are divided for doing the research which are above water level, water line level and below water level respectively. First, in the above water level, the information of helipad and route, contour line, low cloud density, the route of land bird and sea bird and wind speed are showed in mapping.

MAPPING Territorial Sea/ Coastline Water Line
Second, in the water line level, the information of fish farm, coastline pollution, fathom line, wind wave, wind wave height, rocks, sands, stones, boulders, different types of ship are showed in this mapping.

MAPPING Territorial Sea/ Coastline Below Water
Then, in the below water level, the information of southern waters, uniquenes or rarity, special importance for life- history stages of species, imortance for thretened, endangered or declining species and/or habitats, vulnerability, fragility, sensitivity, or slow recovery, biological diversity, naturalness, coastal currents in wet season and dry season, tidal currents, marine letter and diving are showed in this mapping.

The plan of Po Toi Island, it looks like a turtle on plan view, so I was trying to use a hand- painting method to explore my own feeling. After that, one day, I put the above painting up- side down, and I realized that, maybe I could see more.

“And Then There Were None”, an up-side-down Po Toi Island world, which is constructed by marine litter. Marine animals are living in this world, and there is a turtle as the island’s deity, which can provide magical spells to the marine animals to build their infrastructure by using marine litters. Fishing People is their daily activity, because people is the only food they can eat in the world. They have been living with marine litters for a long time and trying to collect and classify the litters to build their infrastructures. At the same time, these infrastructures also provide them living, entertainment and working spaces. However, from the day Wind-Mum and Water-Mum begin to deteriorate, the world begins to be dead. And finally, then there were none.

STORY OVERVIEW Story Map
There are three worlds show in this Up-side down Po Toi Island, plastic world, fishing world and dead world. Marine animals are living with litters, they are trying to save themselves before end of the world. .21.
The above section drawing is up- side down as well. All of these infrastructures are floating under the water , anchor concrete tyres as anchors to fix these infrastructure. Marine animals are using the body of human being to make their transpotation, so that could connect each of the infrastructures. .22.
STORY OVERVIEW Episode 1 Collecting Machine & Body Hospital
Infrastructure A- Collecting Machine, it will collect the marine litters by using vacuum cleaners, then use dry cleaner and sprinkler to wash the litters respectively. After that, a trumpet will compress all of the litters, so the litters can be transported easily. After transporting the litters from Collecting Machine to Infrastructure B- Body Hospital, the litters are eaten by pills, which makes the litters healthy. After that, body check by using echometer and stay for a night is needed in this hospital. Finally, the litters will be clasiffied respectively.
