THE “RED SPIKE ERA” BEGINS It has been 150 years since the “golden spike” in 1869. This historic moment marked the connection of the Central Pacific Railroad with the Union Pacific Railroad and the completion of the United States’ first transcontinental railroad. Now, Virgin Trains is introducing the “red spike era” and our commitment to reinvent passenger rail service in America. We are providing fast, efficient, hospitality-driven transportation that connects dynamic, complementary cities and congested corridors that are too close to fly and too far to drive. Read all about our groundbreaking ceremony and the start of Phase 2 construction that will connect South Florida to Orlando beginning on page 40. We are excited to continue our transition and become part of the Virgin Group, which is known for being a disruptor. Virgin Trains has already started reinventing passenger rail in America as the first privately funded passenger rail project since Henry Flagler’s accomplishments over a century ago. In 2022, we will connect two of Florida’s most visited and populated destinations: Miami and Orlando. It has taken a Herculean effort to make it this far as the largest private infrastructure project in the nation. Our state’s residents and visitors deserve better transportation options, and we will be the most eco-friendly transportation choice in the state, removing more than 3 million cars from the road each year. For now, I encourage you to continue exploring South Florida using Virgin Trains’ service to make more business and community connections with family and friends. Let’s toast to the “red spike era” and the reinvention of passenger rail in America. Enjoy the journey.

pedestrian-friendly street lined with palms, oldfashioned street lamps and fragrant flora. Charming boutiques and shops filled with silken finery, imported footwear, jewelry, delightful crafts, and sweet treats. Galleries exhibiting paintings and sculptures from some of the country’s most skilled artists. Restaurants and gastropubs with savory cuisine, tasty drinks and lively music. It’s all here in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, just a short walk from the Fort Lauderdale Brightline Station.

CONNECTING THE DOTS They say that in life, the most important thing is the connections we make with others — and I believe that goes for destinations too! Discovering the hidden gems and delightful attractions of another place, whether it’s a new country or the next stopover, makes you appreciate the local community and the identity they’ve created over time. As our tracks make their way up to Orlando, I like to think that we aren’t just the middleman between point A and B, but a valuable connecter that is unifying our communities and highlighting the things we’re most proud of — Miami’s nightlife, Fort Lauderdale’s food scene, West Palm Beach’s old-fashioned architecture, and, soon, the enchantment and imagination of Orlando’s theme parks. Read more about our absolutely stunning Orlando station that will connect Central Florida with South Florida in a revolutionary way (p. 40). In this issue, we connect you to the best ice cream spots (p. 26), wine bars (p. 16) and film locales (p. 42) near each station. Adrenaline junkies will enjoy reading about SoFlo water sports (p. 32) while leisurely outdoor enthusiasts will similarly enjoy walking through SoFlo gardens (p. 48). We visit the worldclass shopping and dining destination of Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas (p. 18) and put you front and center of soccer’s return to South Florida — led by international icon David Beckham (p. 28). Whether you’re exploring South Florida for the first time or playing tourist at the next stop, we encourage you to make those valuable connections and discover another reason to fall in love with the Sunshine State.

Me showing a friend around South Florida

SOUTH FLORIDA CALLING

William P. Jordan III Editor-in-Chief bjordan@ppigroup.com

South Florida’s “sun and fun” reputation is no doubt well earned, but like all stereotypes, it’s a simplified label that glosses over so much nuance and depth that makes this region truly special. Walking around South Beach in Miami feels a galaxy away from strolling Worth Avenue in Palm Beach … to say nothing of la dolce vita around the Venice-like waterways of Fort Lauderdale. There are so many scenes and lifestyles to embrace here in South Florida, and thanks to Brightline, there’s finally a unifying force that brings it all that much closer and expands our already broad horizons. As the editor-in-chief of Go, Brightline’s exclusive lifestyle publication, I am honored to be a part of this revolution here where I call home. Go is much more than just a time-passing diversion for riders. From the very beginning, we’ve wanted to create a publication that entertains and inspires those who — if judged only by the simple acts of boarding this train and opening this magazine — are clearly engaged in the world, curious about its potential, and aspiring for its best. Brightline might function as a train, but it feels more like a high-speed beacon that unites and celebrates South Florida, and it’s the thrill of my lifetime to be a part of this ride with you. We hope you enjoy every second of the experience.

A scroll through Cakes, Etc.’s online gallery of elaborate tiered and stacked cakes can instill as much wonder at their beauty as it can fear at the daunting idea of decorating one yourself. Luckily, the self-dubbed “toy store for cake decorators” offers as many types of classes as it does custom cakes to choose from. Monday through Thursday evenings, bring your piping bag and frosting tips to learn the basics of cake decorating (icing borders and buttercream roses) or work yourself up to more advanced techniques (using fondant and making wired gumpaste flowers). ER David Beckham has dominated every football field and fashion page he’s been on. In South Florida, the icon might find his greatest stage yet. We’re less than a year away from the opening kick-off that will mark professional soccer’s return to South Florida. That moment, in the center of a glorious new 18,000-seat Fort Lauderdale stadium, will be both the culmination of years of tireless efforts and, at the same time, just the beginning of what is sure to be a long, successful run. With that one kick, the rewards of a triumphant past will instantly become the promise of a bright future, and right there, in the spiritual center of it all, will be David Beckham. He won’t be on the field, mind you, but his iconic presence and determined drive will have made that day a reality … and the dreams of tomorrow all the more thrilling. London-born and universally beloved, David Beckham’s PA IMAGES/ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

rise from kick-bending midfielder and pose-striking model to boardroom businessman and philanthropic humanitarian seems like an overnight success story, but the apparent ease of that ascension has everything to do with Beckham’s charismatic demeanor and behind-the-scenes hard work. CENTER OF IT ALL

As Brightline continues to bring South Florida closer, the expansion efforts to connect with Orlando are picking up steam.

With so much to experience here in South Florida, it’s easy to forget that there’s a whole lot of state above West Palm Beach. Come 2022, Brightline will be putting one of those upstate cities on the map — succeeding where Mickey Mouse and Harry Potter have been trying for years — and cutting the ribbon on a brand new station that will connect Central Florida with South Florida in a revolutionary, game-changing way. Brightline will make its Central Florida home in Orlando International Airport (MCO), less than 20 miles from so many fantastic ways to spend a day Orlando, Sea World, Downtown Orlando … the list goes on. While the state-of-the-art facility is being built, the construction efforts to connect it with Brightline’s South Florida stations are entering project phases that can’t help but excite and energize those involved.

Sir Richard’s Wild Rides During a productive spring in which he made traveling strides from South Dakota (personally asking the landlocked locals to book a cruise with Virgin Voyages) to outer space (announcing the new spaceport home for Virgin Galactic), Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson made perhaps his biggest splash right here in South Florida. Not only was Branson front-andcenter for a champagne toast to the rebranded Virgin MiamiCentral station, but he even hopped on board and experienced the finest in train transportation alongside fellow travelers. Some regulars, some firsttimers — all starstruck. “Virgin has a long history of changing industries for the better and inspiring enduring loyalty through outstanding customer experiences,” said Branson on that April morning. “Today marks the first step in that journey with Virgin Trains USA. “I’m very excited to see the transformation of our service and the plans for the next phase of the project to Orlando.”

South Florida is undeniably photogenic. The sunshine might make us all a little loopy, but the lighting is perfect, the palm trees provide a provocative backdrop, and generations of real-estate booms have granted us architecture ranging from faux-Moorish castles to retro-futurist art deco hotels. It’s no wonder big-time directors keep rediscovering the place. A tour taking in all the South Florida film hotspots would last for months — even tracing the path of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective would be a full-time endeavor, much less golfing along with the Caddyshack crew or walking in the footsteps of the Bad Boys franchise. Instead, movie buffs can narrow their focus to three distinct areas that are packed with more than their fair share of Florida film history. Have fun scouting these locations.

Glamorous gardens are all over this subtropic paradise of ours, waiting to be wandered and worshipped. By Jen Karetnick

Gardens are imbued with all sorts of metaphorical meanings, from the biblical to the sensual. They imply that a paradise once exited can never be entered again, and that everything has a season that passes. But they also remind us of bounty, and show us how to look ahead to life’s joys even as we suffer losses. As author Michael Pollan writes, “The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway.” Whatever your reasons are for enjoying gardens, here in the subtropics of South Florida, all types of them — botanical, Eastern, formal — are available year-round. 49

If you’re a fan of clean energy, you’ll be pleased to know that the Sunshine State is quickly becoming the Solar State. Florida’s largest energy company, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), is in the midst of the largest solar expansion in the history of America. Through a groundbreaking “30-by-30” plan, FPL will install more than 30 million solar panels across Florida by 2030. To put it in perspective, 30 million solar panels laid end-to-end would wrap around the Earth one and a half times. FPL commissioned its first universal solar installation in 1984, a 10-kilowatt PV facility in Miami that helped the company’s employees gain experience with the then-emerging technology. Thirty-five years later, there are 18 universal solar power plants in operation across the state, including the FPL Miami-Dade Solar Energy Center and the FPL Interstate Solar Energy Center in Port St. Lucie, located in the state’s southern counties. “FPL is not your traditional electric company,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “We’re a technology company that delivers power, and we’ve long believed in making smart, forward-thinking infrastructure investments to produce tangible, long-term benefits – cleaner air, lower electric rates and reliable service – for our customers and our state. Now, we’re taking our long-standing clean energy commitment to the next level.” We think that clean, affordable solar energy should be for everyone. That’s why we’ve created FPL SolarTogetherSM Subject to approval by the Florida Public Service Commission – this program, will provide all customers with an opportunity to participate in the economic and environmental benefits of solar energy while receiving credits on their FPL Bill that are expected to reduce their monthly bills over time. FPL SolarTogether will be the largest community solar program in the United States and will allow customers to directly support the expansion of renewable energy in Florida. “Include Miami-Dade County among the advocates and early endorsers of FPL SolarTogether program,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Giménez. “A ‘Resilient 305’ means embracing sustainable and environmentally responsible options to promote the growth and utilization of smart, affordable solar energy sources to secure power for Miami-Dade County facilities and allow residents and businesses to reap the benefits of zero emissions and cost savings.” Along with the universal power plants and the FPL SolarTogether program, FPL continues to bring fun, interactive installations to local area attractions in communities near you. You may have noticed FPL’s picturesque arrays at the Philips and Patricia Frost Museum, Zoo Miami, Museum of Discovery & Science, the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, Tropical Park, Bay of Pigs Park and other community parks, zoos and educational facilities throughout Florida. Perhaps you recognized the solar trees at the Brightline station before boarding your train. FPL reached a major milestone this year and installed its 100th solar tree in the state at Brightline’s West Palm Beach station. This was all thanks to more than 50,000 SolarNow participants that voluntarily contribute a small amount a month. How will you do your part to promote Florida’s solar growth? Check out FPL’s initiatives, projects and more at www.fpl.com, or visit www.solarnow.fpl.com to get involved!
