Santa Gertrudis Genetics The SGBI genetic evaluation is one of the most comprehensive among the Bos
indicus breeds. The evaluation system, developed by Livestock Genetic Services, has been reviewed by the nation’s leading animal geneticists and utilizes genotypes collected from the breed’s leading sires and validated on 10K, 20K and 50K SNP chips. Thousands of ranch phenotypes serve as the foundation of the association’s genetic evaluation. Santa Gertrudis is the only Bos indicus-influenced breed offering the reliability of DNA verified expected progeny differences (EPDs) and performance-based selection tools developed from genomically-enhanced EPDs. In addition to DNA verified EPDs, we have included two easy-to-read and understand selection indices for buyer use. These indices provide a “snap shot” of an animal’s growth and carcass traits.
Growth Index is a dollar index putting together
weaning weight and yearling weight. Since WW is contained in YW, post wean gain (PWG) is used in the index to prevent double counting the WW. As an example of the index, if a bull has a +35 growth index, his calves will be, on average, worth $35 more as yearlings than the breed average, based strictly on weight.
Carcass Rank Index contains marbling
score, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, and backfat and is weighted by the economics of carcass values. It is expressed here as a numerical ranking within the breed from 1-10 with 10 being the highest. For example, an animal with a score of 9 would be in the 80th percentile or would be better than 80% of the population in carcass composition. A ranking of 6 would place the animal in the 50th percentile. 2

Cows and heifers represented as “bred” are not guaranteed safe in calf, but they and open heifers selling as individual lots are guaranteed breeders. No guarantee shall apply to sucking calves. No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver a live calf or that she will carry a calf full term. The seller is not responsible for damages caused by foreign bodies after the animals have been sold and for sickness not apparent at sale time.
