Automate UK matters

he PPMA Group of Associations has rebranded to Automate UK to better represent the needs of our membership and our end user customers in the everchanging manufacturing landscape. And we have done this with very good reason. When you go back to basics, the fundamental requirement of a trade association is to be the loudest and most direct voice it can be to promote the services of its members and the benefits and growth of the industry it represents and operates in. This is never truer than in our three specialist associations which represent the technology used across all parts of the production line, basically automating every element of a factory. However, our previous overall name did not communicate this in any way and this had to change. The PPMA being part of the PPMA Group of Associations made no sense, so why not change our name to something that instantly communicates what every member does. It also allows us ways to promote the services of traditional PPMA members in a more focused way because we can rightfully make processing and packaging machinery its own specialist subject within the organisation.
Automate UK can really play a leading role in helping UK PLC to adopt appropriate levels of automation We believe Automate UK can play a leading role in promoting how easy automation is to adopt and that there are different tiers of automation for different needs. And as well as developing new opportunities for our members, we also need to work collaboratively with stakeholders around us including:• Political parties and Think Tanks – so we can try and create a world where our members and their end users can work alongside industrial policy rather than having to fight against it. • Other Trade Associations/Organisations – the voice of many is obviously louder than the voice of one and we know from other trade bodies that their needs and wants are aligned with ours. • New technologies and members – there is a whole support network of companies who should become part of our world to play a fundamental part in our industrial growth, including AI developers, project management houses, systems integrators and companies in sustainability who when working collaboratively with us can create levels of growth and progress seldom seen. And, of course, collaborative work on education and training is another important commitment of Automate UK. n

PPMA rebrand joins up a new automation rationale T
he PPMA (Processing & Packaging Machinery Association) Group of Associations has rebranded and changed its name to Automate UK to better represent the needs of its membership and their end user customers in the ever-changing manufacturing landscape. The forward-looking move was announced at the trade association’s annual chairman’s lunch in London on 1 December and follows the publication of a Manifesto for Automation earlier in the year. This Manifesto set out the organisation’s goals and commitment to be the facilitators for change to make UK PLC more productive. It also set out the central role that automation has to play in the UK manufacturing sectors continuing success. The PPMA was founded in 1987 and was joined by BARA (British Automation

As the association matures, the leadership team felt that the time was right for the overall offer to members, and their customers, to benefit from a widening of its already extensive range of services. As the leading trade association for automation
suppliers and end users of technology across processing, packaging, robotics and machine vision, it believes it can make great strides in this crucial area of the UK economy. The three very successful associations – the PPMA, BARA and UKIVA – will continue to operate, but going forward they will come under the Automate UK umbrella. T 020 8773 8111 W www.automate-uk.com
In November, Hepco and Beckhoff organised a joint Mechatronic event that included a new product reveal that is set to re-position the GFX/XTS smart conveyor into new applications. Held at the prestigious Red Bull Racing HQ in Milton Keynes, customers, suppliers and journalists gathered to hear about the new rectangular guidance solution that means a smart conveyor can now handle payloads of up to 40 kg. This new GFX-r has been developed in response to the strong growth in smart transportation systems, especially in higher load applications by providing movement in rectangular paths.

shida Europe has introduced a new in-line seal tester for snacks and other dry product packs, offering high precision seal integrity testing at speeds of up to 150 packs per minute.
An open frame allows easy cleaning
The new TSC-AS combines high accuracy leak detection with gentle bag handling to offer manufacturers quality control to meet the stringent standards of the retail sector. In operation, the seal tester measures the air pressure and fill level of every pack directly from the bagmaker.
It can detect apertures as small as 3 mm, using inline, non-destructive testing, checking each pack for leaks, incorrect inflation and double packs. Its small footprint allows quick and simple installation and enables it to fit easily into existing lines. As part of an integrated Ishida packing line, the TSC-AS can link both upstream and downstream to the Ishida bagmaker and casepacker, while Ishida ITPS 2 software
allows full in-line control and access to each machine from one single HMI. Complete line changes can be performed from any of the machine HMIs within the same line, enabling a fast and error free product changeover without the requirement for skilled operators. Software allows maintenance teams to prevent asset failure R
ockwell Automation has launched what it describes as a new game-changing artificial intelligence (AI) product called Asset Risk Predictor (ARP) from Fiix by Rockwell Automation. ARP is the newest product to be introduced under the Fiix by Rockwell Automation name. This second offering uses AI sensor data, machine recipe, and operational environments to predict asset health so users can spot and eliminate failure before it happens. The tool is powerful enough to learn the signs of equipment failure in as little as seven days, predicting breakdowns days in advance, and is built so anyone can act on the insights in seconds. EMPOWERING CLIENTS “I’m thrilled that we’ve developed ARP, a cutting-edge AI solution,” said Liudmila Domakhina, group product manager at Fiix by Rockwell Automation. “ARP empowers customers to transition to predictive maintenance, saving on monitoring costs and preventing downtimes.” By showing users the daily risk level for each asset they monitor, they can expect fewer breakdowns, and spend less time setting up manual inspections. Other benefits include lowering the spend on resources and production time on unnecessary maintenance, removing the guesswork from traditional predictive maintenance operations. ARP can be purchased and used independently from a Fiix computerised maintenance management system (CMMS) or can be seamlessly integrated into the CMMS. T 0870 242 5004 W www.fiixsoftware.com/arp

Data intelligence platform offers operational benefit Printer offers advanced features
Fast coder marks wires and cables Linx Printing Technologies has launched the Linx 8000 series Spectrum continuous ink jet (cij) printer, adding new features to pigmented ink printing which deliver high print quality and also reliability. Specifically designed to deliver high performance and high contrast marking of white and light-coloured inks onto surfaces such as plastics cabling, extruded products and coloured glass, the new Spectrum prints at line speeds of up to 10 metres per second in challenging production environments. The Spectrum carries ‘best-in-class’ extended service intervals of up to 8,000 hours or 12 months, which Linx says is up to two times longer than most other pigmented printers, across a range of hard-pigmented inks. The printer also offers longterm reliability and durability that avoids the costs and time incurred through unnecessary line stoppages and the resulting reworking or product waste. In particular, the printer’s patent pending PureFlow filtration system ensures opaque print and a cleaner nozzle for consistent, high-quality printing onto every product time after time, while requiring only weekly printhead cleanings, seven times fewer cleans versus similar printers. Another feature is the Spectrum’s patent pending Vortex system, which disperses any settled heavy pigment. T 01480 775223 W www.linxglobal.com

The solution is highly scalable, enabling users to adopt it on a projectby-project basis or at a wider organisational level. “Operators who want to gain more insights across a production floor, factory or warehouse may feel quite daunted by the prospect of collecting and comparing data from many different machines or applications,” says Charlie Walker, Sick UK’s digital solutions consultant. “Faced with a sea of information, it can be difficult
to isolate the specific factors that are affecting operating efficiency,” he continues. “The data could come from all sorts of sources that use different communications protocols and information could even still be recorded manually, be stuck in silos, or bogged down in bottlenecks. “Field Analytics can solve these problems easily by collecting data from all these disparate sources without costly and time-consuming adaptation of any existing systems,” he said. REDUCING GIVEAWAY Engineered originally for high-speed bakeries, this new addition to the Fortress Raptor checkweighing series gives European food processors the tools to switch out their manual weight checking processes and maintain weight compliance while simultaneously saving thousands of pounds in daily product giveaway. Capable of weighing items as light as a garlic dough ball up to a 6 kg cheese block, the new weigher automatically rejects product units under or over-weight by as little as 0.5 g. Simultaneously, the machine’s software communicates back to upstream portion control equipment in real time to adjust the position of cutting blades. Helping to ensure the entire batch isn’t off-spec. Leaving the weight check until the end of the process is one of the most wasteful activities, says Fortress. The Vx-Series is designed to maximise production uptime while reducing ribbon usage in flow wraps, and horizontal form, fill and seal (HFFS) and vertical (VFFS) applications. It was developed in direct consultation with customers with significant experience with TTO printers and flexible packaging. Downtime caused by complicated ribbon drive technologies and excess costs from inefficient ribbon usage emerged as key issues. The Vx-Series was therefore designed to tackle these issues head-on and was subject to extensive testing at customer sites prior to launch. “Increasing production costs linked to the price of energy and raw materials are putting pressure on food manufacturers, many of

Solution has delivered the agility and throughput for range of SKUs L
AC Logistics Automation has supplied an Exotec Skypod order-picking solution to iForce to deliver the necessary throughput and replenishment levels for its high-profile retail clients. This solution uses a fleet of robots, uniquely operating in the x, y and z axes, developed to help e-merchants and retailers to best utilise their available warehouse space. iForce offers a fully integrated supply chain capability to multi-channel retailers and needed a system that would provide a rapid and agile order picking and replenishment solution for a large range of SKUs, typically being updated every two weeks. As well as agility and speed, the customer also needed a solution that was highly flexible and expandable to ensure scalability without compromising on efficiency. The system also needed to fit within an already busy warehouse environment, without impacting existing fulfilment operations.
The Skypod system supports reactive order picking and can adapt quickly
LAC’s design team analysed reams of volumetric SKU data to determine the most fitting solution for iForce’s overall requirements. The Exotec Skypod structure installed at the Corby facility consists of high density racking on the warehouse floor, reaching to 12 m in height, with a capacity for 17,000 bins. A total of 43 Skypod robots are deployed
to autonomously pick items using Lidar scanners located on the front of the robot, which map the floor and navigate to the required SKU location. To streamline the order picking process, six pick stations were installed with a further pick station used for replenishments. However, to offer 100% flexibility, any picking station can be utilised
for replenishment based on changing demands. Operators stand at each pick station, where they receive the items in the bins from the Skypod robots, and then place the picked order item(s) into a tote. The order tote is then placed on a 30-metre length of LAC’s automated powered roller conveyor located behind the pick stations, which transports the tote to the packing area, ready for dispatch. The replenishment process involves an operator collecting the relevant SKU carton from racking. The replenishment SKUs are then transported to the Exotec replenishment station, where they are decanted into an empty storage tote. Comfortably facilitating the e-commerce model, the Exotec Skypod offers a maximum rate of 1082 tote presentations per hour, a level designed to manage high order volumes for peak periods. Feature: Dairy: introduction
Cheese sees innovation across sector This major dairy feature contains a whole range of equipment/systems that are delivering production gains for cheese processors across Europe. Whether it’s slicing or labelling & coding or technology in cheese rooms or vacuum systems, these technologies are ensuring total cost of ownership gains for users. One example of clever technology delivered by a successful collaboration between two Automate UK members saw pouches of cheese slices being handled at 280 a minute. Through the use of piGRIP suction cups, certified for food contact, and COAX vacuum generators from Piab, the Cama Group created a loading system that delivers production gains across more than 100 pouch formats. Ten product formats and about fifteen box formats, and all the possible combinations are handled. To minimise the number of grippers required, Cama developed two types of grippers which can handle all formats of cheese slices: one with 2 and one with 3 gripping units. Each unit consists of 4 suction cups and 4 vacuum generators and grips one pouch of cheese slices at a time. The piGRIP is a configurable suction cup concept with individually optimised parts for gripping, lifting and height compensation which is designed to work with the changing surface of a bag. They allow secure and quick moves for fast automated processes while preventing any product damage. Meanwhile, Piab’s vacuum generation technology COAX minimises energy consumption while offering a secure and fast grip due to its high initial vacuum flow. W www.camagroup.com W www.piab.com

K dairy has been through turbulent times, but last year was certainly one of the biggest challenges for dairy companies! Rising supply costs did not help, nor did retailers starting to rationalise their ranges, but these stumbling blocks didn’t seem to stop all NPD projects or investments in equipment that help to drive out costs. And our major dairy feature demonstrates this across the next 19 pages. In the US too, a PMMI Dairy Industry Report found that advancements in processing and packaging technology was enabling dairy companies to keep up with changing consumer preferences by introducing new products and new formats on existing equipment. Collaborative working was uniting stakeholders across the diary industry
in a shared goal of driving NPD to new heights, according to report findings. This feature covers everything from milk processing to yogurts, from drinks to cheeses and the vast range of technologies that are used at processing sites across Europe. New products and case study material demonstrate the diverse range of customer needs that have been met. It also covers systems to meet changing packaging trends in the dairy sector such as the recent move away from the once, very popular, reclosable zip packs used for cheese as they are not currently recyclable. Conversely, says PFM Packaging Machinery, we are seeing an increase in demand for the more traditional pillow packs which utilise proportionally less wrapping material and that can also be created using more sustainable materials. Enjoy the feature!

utting, handling, wrapping and labelling cheese is covered in this feature as Automate UK members deliver a host of advantages in manufacturing. For instance, TM Robotics supplied its THP700 SCARA robot to a bespoke machinery supplier for two pick and place applications with vision and conveyor tracking capabilities. One of Elliptical Design’s applications involves the robot picking up a large, half-moon piece of cheese and placing it into plastic packaging; the other, picks up and places three small pieces of cheese into packs. This robot has a cycle time of 0.3 seconds and is capable of 120 cycles per minute in continuous 24-hour operation. Its arm length of 700 mm and a 10 kg payload capacity makes it ideal for the demands of food production. For an ultrasonic cutting system, the robot picks up a 10 kg piece of cheese and moves it onto a weigh station, and then a cutting station. Here, it is cut in half using precise and accurate ultrasonic technology. For this system, TM Robotics supplied the TV1000H 6-axis industrial robot. A strong yet flexible robot with an IP rating of IP65, or IP67 in some models, and a cycle time of up to 0.9 seconds and repeatability of ±0.03 mm. “The challenge here was to ensure that the robot was picking up cheese in the right place and being able to put it down as accurately as needed,” explains Nigel Smith, managing director of TM Robotics. “Using our direct partnership with Shibaura Machine, the team’s engineers found the right algorithm in the vision programme to ensure the robot could identify non-uniform cheese shapes and also to pick the cheese accurately.” Now turning to flexible packaging solutions, BW Flexible Systems offers equipment that can handle a

Delivering for cheese Automate UK members have been supplying a range of equipment for processing and packaging cheeses huge range of cheese product applications including grated, crumbled, diced/cubed, block, individually wrapped slices, shaved, sliced and shredded. The Hayssen ISB VFFS bagger offers sanitary design and advanced interactivity for improved bag packaging and throughput. It’s easy to clean and easy to operate, ensuring maximised throughput, minimised downtime, and also optimal food safety. The horizontal flow wrapper Hayssen RT 2000 is ideal for high seal quality at high
speeds (+200 ppm in some applications), and the ability to seal through zippers at high speed (+150 ppm in some applications). At the same time, PFM Packaging Machinery’s Scirocco flow wrapper’s fin seal assembly has been updated with a new high performance sealing system. It has been specifically designed to meet today’s market requirements for sustainable wrapping materials usage which have a smaller sealing window.
This new system includes 4 sets of sealing wheels which are held perfectly parallel, to improve film control. When the wrapper stops, the heated wheels are held open and positioned to prevent film damage, even with mono plastics, paper and a variety of recyclable materials which can be difficult to handle. Meanwhile, Eurilait has installed a high speed FM305C flow wrapping machine from Ulma Packaging to pack its diverse range

of French and British cheeses. It replaces a machine that the company supplied in 2006. “Our previous machine served us well for nearly two decades, but natural wear and tear began to impact its performance prompting us to upgrade,” explained Damian Wills, engineering manager at Eurilait. The stainless-steel FM305C offers flexibility thanks to its box motion sealing head powered by two independent motors. While accommodating different product shapes and sizes, the FM305C ensures high-quality hermetic seals, thereby preserving the freshness of Eurilait’s cheeses. Herma UK’s Labelling Systems Division says when it comes to labelling, cheese producers encounter challenges as varied as the array of cheeses themselves. From hard truckles to soft deli wraps, variations in product shapes and sizes means the need for adaptable and precise labelling solutions is crucial not only for maintaining quality but also for reducing downtime and minimising maintenance costs. Throughout last year, the company offered a consultative partnership, working closely with cheese producers to understand their unique product handling requirements while keeping operational costs down. For labelling cheese truckles, for instance, enhancements including moving the product through vacuum gates and wiping down the label as the product exits the labelling station, were devised

Print & apply transforms a cheese line To meet increased production volumes in specialist cheeses, David Williams Cheese is using new barcoding/labelling equipment supplied by Cobalt Systems that has increased throughput providing 25% more output on the production line, significantly reduced reliance on human resource, is saving money and has improved efficiency. “Before engaging Cobalt Systems, we were hand-applying labels, but as volume increased, there was a lack of consistency and issues would arise with incorrect labelling affecting the presentation of the products,” explains md David Williams. The brief given to Cobalt was to specify a print and apply solution that could print and apply multiple labels per product, was able to fit into a confined space and offered ease of use and media replenishment for operators. The Nexus 20 applicator was installed to apply two labels; the first being a decorative label, plus a second barcoded label containing variable information such as dates and batch numbers to assist with product traceability which was configured to reduce the production area footprint. The system also had to be easy to control and simple to replenish media. An integrated control screen providing consistent user interface and allowing both machines to be controlled separately met the first, while the standard feature set of the print and apply machines, met the second. hen stipulating new filling and capping equipment for its range of oat drinks, Avondale Foods (Craigavon) put hygiene at the top of its shopping list. Adelphi Masterfil therefore developed several hygiene-focussed machine modifications, tailored specifically for a custom filling and capping line for Avondale. The machinery needed to play its part in ensuring that every drop of product reaching consumers maintained the highest standards of purity and safety. The line incorporated a S1200-A Multifil automatic filling machine and a Mastercap automatic screw capper. The client also invested in a S5000-S twin head semi-automatic filling machine with similar hygienic features as insurance against any downtime caused by its planned maintenance schedule together with product development projects which could be carried out on a smaller scale. Grill style laser-cut stainless steel machine covers were used as an alternative to plastic or glass, which would be damaged by the aggressive cleaning chemicals used in the company’s cleaning processes. LED illuminated lighting built into the filler ensure operators can still
visually oversee the filling process. All welded product contact parts were passivated, to slow down or eliminate the corrosion which can occur when cleaning chemicals containing chlorides react with free iron on the surface of the metal. Preventing dust or particulates from entering the milk was also an essential factor, so conveyor covers were added to prevent things dropping in from above, with an angled design to avoid dripping from any condensation. A CUSTOM WASH-BATH ADDED Product building up on – or in – the machine also needed to be avoided entirely, and so a custom wash-bath was added for the conveyor slats, while recessed cylinders were specified to provide a thorough cleaning/flushing of any deposits which may form on the underside/ around the piston seals. Adelphi Masterfil’s team collaborated with Avondale throughout the development process to ensure the machine’s CIP (clean-in-place) functionality would connect with the Avondale site’s SCADA system. utomate UK members continue to provide essential equipment for yogurt and other cultured milk producers to help their businesses thrive. For instance, Yeo Valley Farms Production has been using the mixing, dispersing and homogenising equipment from Ytron-Quadro at its factories in Blagdon, Cannington and Newton Abbott for years. This has included the Ytron-Z inline rotor/stator homogeniser and Ytron-Y units for various uniform mixing applications including mixing of fruit into yogurt (as seen on the BBC programme ‘Inside the Factory’). Three Ytron-Y 55 kW mixers at the Yeo Valley Crewkerne facility are installed in 45,000 litre and 100,000 litre vessels containing a highly viscous yogurt base and ensure an homogeneous mix throughout the whole batch. Meanwhile, Little Town Dairy, a family run business producing a wide range of cultured milk products including yogurts, soured cream, crème fraiche and buttermilk has developed a great relationship with Riggs Autopack to deliver efficient filling equipment. “We can always rely on Riggs Autopack to provide a straightforward but efficient

solution to any of our filling issues,” explains Dawn Heywood, technical manager at Little Town Dairy. Over the years, Riggs Autopack has supplied several depositors to the dairy to help with its production growth, and last year, the company supplied a semiautomatic hand capping machine designed for tightening manually placed lids on jars, bottles and jerry cans. It helps eradicate repetitive strain for operators and Little Town Dairy are using it on its 5 litre bottles of buttermilk. However, the first purchase from Riggs was in 2015, and was a Model 1000 Series 1 Micro depositor designed to operate with a third-party rotary pot machine. This automatic depositor was supplied to accurately deposit 30 g of fruit compotes into plastic pots. A second depositor was supplied a year later, this time a Model 1000 Series 3 bulk depositor, designed to accurately deposit soured cream, crème fraiche and Greek style yogurt into 1 kg, 2.5 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg plastic buckets. This semi-automatic depositor was designed as a direct feed system, taking products from a low-level
RJT outlet on a holding tank. Packaging Automation supplies a range of Rotofill and Starwheel pot filling machines that have been designed to meet the special needs of dairy manufacturers, particularly in the production of yogurt, cream cheese, and other dairy desserts. Sealing plays a pivotal role in packaging lines of cultured milk products, explains David Devine, business development manager at Emerson, and ultrasonic welding offers a superior alternative to traditional methods. “It concentrates heat through high-frequency friction at the seal interface, minimising heat dissipation to surrounding packaging materials,” he says. “It also consumes less energy, remains impervious to product contamination, and allows maintenance and tooling changes without cooling periods.” Switching to ultrasonic welding can be a straightforward retrofit for a packaging line. n every dairy processing site, there is clever technology ensuring the production line works as it should, which is not always obvious on first inspection. Here, we look at the latest options from Automate UK members that are making a real difference to dairy manufacturing and packing operations. The new AWH leakage butterfly valve that is available from Neumo UK is one such example. Utilisation of this allows for safe and effective cleaning of one part of a process line while the remainder can remain CIP procedures at Züger now use 50% less disinfectant and also 100,000 litres less water per day available for continuous processing. This can lead to valuable reductions in usage of hot water and chemicals and also reduced production of wastewater. “It also minimises offline plant time and optimises productivity without the need for duplicate or back up plant, therefore delivering cost savings,” explains Jerry Bradshaw business development manager at Neumo UK. Effective separation and containment of hazardous materials – such as clean-in-place (CIP) fluids and product – is safety and quality critical in any sanitary process environment. The AWH leakage butterfly valve ensures this by using a large internal cheese products, such as cottage cheese, measured value from the sensor - in just chamber between two linked mozzarella and mascarpone. 15 seconds. ith manufacturers continuing to face labour shortages, increasing efficiencies will be a key challenge in the pursuit of profitable production lines for many in 2024. Accelerating automated manufacturing processes offers the ability to increase consistency, eliminate bottlenecks and reduce downtime due to a lack of personnel or space needed to meet peaks in demand. And palletising operations at the end of a line is an area where this can be key. Scott Automation was recently awarded a new contract to supply and install a high-speed model from its new range of PAL 4.0 palletisers for a leading producer in the UK dairy industry. Capable of handling both plastics and cardboard trays at line speeds approaching 90 trays per minute, the twin infeed palletiser is designed to cope with the progressive change from plastics to cardboard trays now being implemented throughout the dairy and associated industries. PAL 4.0’s design ensures a clear view of all critical operations in the layer formation area; it has a compact footprint and is available in several height variants. With the latest in HMI and control systems integrated into the palletiser
for ease of operation and user friendliness, data is linked to the factory management system via Scott’s Maestro industrial software package which is a web-based fully modular system. Although achieving the consistently high throughput speeds that were required for this contract, Scott says the design features of the PAL 4.0 model ensures careful tray handling at all stages of the palletising process to maintain product integrity throughout. The equipment also ensures perfectly built pallets are forwarded onto the client’s eventual customers. COLLABORATIVE ROBOT USAGE Meanwhile, one of Universal Robots’ first deployments of its newest cobot (collaborative robot) – the UR20 – has delivered productivity gains to Ornua Ingredients, part of Irish Dairy co-operative Ornua. One of the business’ most labourintensive operations was end-of-line palletising in which workers manually handle a variety of heavy-weight dairy products. The business has been using the UR20 to increase operational efficiency, develop talent, and deploy human resources to best effect across the company’s Herefordshire site. “We looked at palletisation as the first area to deploy automation due
to the number of human resources we required,” explains Jack Cotton, continuous improvement lead at Ornua. “When we learned about what the UR20 could do, we were excited by the capabilities, both in terms of the capacity it could lift and the arm reach, which were perfect for the delicate products we required support for. “The benefits of its deployment have been nothing short of brilliant, with increases in consistency and productivity boosts very clear to see,” he said. “It’s been great to see the UR20 used as part of so many transformative manufacturing journeys this year amongst such a diverse range of customers,” comments Stacey Moser who is the chief commercial officer at Universal Robots. Depalletisers are also playing their part in automating dairy sites and UnimacGherri, part of the Arol Group, offers both options. Its depalletiser for jars, bottles and loose cans is available in either push or magnetic head versions. The equipment also allows unloading from the bottom, or the top, to ensure greater efficiencies in separating stacks from a pallet while also reducing overall processing times. Preventing spillage is a hygiene plus FlexLink offers a range of advanced hygienic solutions to deliver dairy efficiencies, whether handling liquid milks, yogurt or cheese. In dairy processing, FlexLink says its robust equipment plays a pivotal role in preventing spillage which is a crucial part in maintaining an hygienic production environment. Spillage can lead to contamination and bacterial growth, threatening production integrity and consumer health. FlexLink’s stainless steel solutions are adept at averting spillage, thereby ensuring the safety and cleanliness of dairy products and production facilities. This commitment to hygiene is illustrated in a recent project where the company’s dynamic control of conveyor speeds significantly reduced product damage which therefore created a clean, efficient production process. At the same time, the company’s conveyor systems have modern cleaning technologies included. These automated systems offer effective cleaning of the conveyors without interfering with production, providing a more stable and trustworthy cleaning standard than with manual processes. Automated cleaning is significant for ensuring a sterile production environment. FlexLink offers an inline chain washing unit which is designed to run continuously when working with production lines that have a high degree of product spillage. The result is a cleaner chain that allows longer production runs without the need for CIP (clean in place) or routine maintenance. T 01908 327200 W www.flexlink.com

However, robustness and reliability are essential in a cow brush as not only are the cows very strong, but the brushes are also in operation for 15 to 18 hours per day. After a false start with another drive manufacturer, Celi Invest now has more than 400 Nord gear units in use. Nord has supplied a powerful combination consisting of a two-stage NORDBLOC.1 helical geared motor and a NORDAC BASE frequency inverter. The motor, the controller and the gear unit form a unit attached to the cow brush, which does not move with the rotation of the brush but rather remains rigid. A universal joint between the motor and the brush as well as 40 mm stainless steel bearings in front of the motor also ensure maximum durability. Both components absorb the torques and reduce the load on the motor. In addition, the Nord drives are energyefficient in operation, have a compact design, offer great reliability and a long service life. he Crailsheim-Dinkelsbühl dairy processes 427,000 litres of raw milk every day to make Balkan cheese, kashkaval and grilling cheese specialities and a vacuum system from Busch Vacuum Solutions now ensures faster cycle times, more stable manufacturing and less energy consumption. At the plant, three wells are being constantly filled with white cheese blocks by skilled hands. A colourful foil covers the packaging before it is evacuated, sealed and cut. While this is happening, a robot is assembling cardboard boxes, into which a vacuum gripper arm now carefully lifts the freshly packaged cheese before dispatch. The five packaging lines are supplied with vacuum from a separate machine room. Here, a pressure-controlled vacuum system from Busch, consisting of three R5 rotary vane vacuum pumps, three PANDA vacuum boosters, a control cabinet and vacuum vessel,
generates the required vacuum level – precisely adjusted to the moisture content of each type of cheese. This is used not only in thermoforming the various types of packaging, pump-down and sealing, but also to assemble the large shipping boxes and insert the packaged cheese. The challenge in packaging cheese lies in the products’ high humidity. This is why the Busch team paid particular attention to sufficiently large filters and incorporated a moisture separator for the whey. “With the new vacuum system from Busch, we save 38,000 kWh per year,” says Josef Vögele, managing director of Milchwerk Crailsheim-Dinkelsbühl. “With the new Busch system, vacuum is applied much more quickly and leads to a significant increase in productivity – while at the same time reducing energy consumption.” T 01952 677432 W www.buschvacuum.com

A recent delegated act has activated new essential requirements in the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and here, we report on these Articles that industry has collectively termed ‘cybersecurity’
A
s we head towards Industry 4.0-based production methods, increasingly complex and convergent technologies are introduced. This means that machines are increasingly incorporating radio-based components which rely on the radio spectrum to operate. In Europe, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) is applicable to all electrical and electronic devices that employ radio technology in their operation, and it establishes a regulatory framework for placing radio equipment on the market. The RED is one of many directives and regulations which are part of the New Legislative Framework (NLF), for placing radio products on the European market. It ensures a single market for radio equipment by setting essential requirements for safety and health, electromagnetic compatibility, and the efficient use of the radio spectrum. It also provides the basis for further regulations by delegated acts adding additional legislation such as in this case for cybersecurity. Compliance with the RED is achieved by satisfying a number of ‘essential requirements’. The existing ones for Safety and Health, EMC and Radio are well known as the ‘original’ essential requirements. However, recently a delegated act was published activating new essential requirements with the details given in the following Articles in the RED,
which the industry has collectively termed ‘cybersecurity’: • 3.3d: communicate over the internet, either directly or via any other equipment • 3.3e: process personal data, traffic data or location data • 3.3f: enable users to transfer money, monetary value or virtual currency. These provisions will become mandatory on August 1, 2025, which is an extension from the original date of August 1, 2024. Manufacturers of radio equipment, that is not compliant by that date,
expected from the Commission. The standards request sets out the minimum requirements, but the final standards may include further assessment criteria where appropriate, and further guidance could come from the Commission. What do the essential requirements actually mean? Article 3.3(d) – Protection of the network It covers radio equipment that can communicate directly through the Internet and radio equipment which can communicate over the Internet by way of another connected device.
Coming to a factory near you soon is the Cyber Resilience Act which will build on RED elements face potential action. The reason behind this is that an increasing number of products, such as machinery, are employing radio technology in their applications. Many of these devices connect to the Internet, which could expose such products to increasing security threats and the potential to be attacked and exploited. To help manufacturers comply with these essential requirements, the European Commission issued a ‘standards request’ to the European Standards Organisations (ESO), asking them to produce standards to assist in compliance. Further guidance is also
Article 3.3(e) – Privacy This requires radio equipment to incorporate safeguards to ensure that the personal data and privacy is secured. This includes but is not limited to radio equipment that can process personal, traffic and location data. Article 3.3(f) It will protect users who wish to use radio products to process financial transactions and protect them from compromise and fraud. Compliance time As compliance with the essential requirements becomes mandatory from August 1, 2025, the entire machinery supply chain (manufacturers, importers
and integrators of radio equipment) now only have approximately 20 months to ensure that internet connected radio devices incorporated into machinery adheres to the new provisions. This may require some significant adaptations to how radioenabled machinery is manufactured and supplied. This time will go very quickly, so manufacturers should start including the new requirements into product technical specifications as early as possible. Next step in compliance Although the RED is pioneering the way forward in Europe in mandating cybersecurity of connected devices, there is presently a proposal out for a new horizontal legislation – The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). This proposal is for a regulation on cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements. Although only a proposal, it is a significant step forward in improving the cybersecurity of products put on the market in Europe. The work being done on the RED though will not be lost as the requirements in the CRA include all of the elements expected in the RED. The date of the final publication of the CRA is yet to be announced but is believed to be imminent.
