Madam President speaks out! “The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work.”
- Michael Jackson Is that not a wonderful quote from one of my all time favorite pop stars? When I read that, I thought what a perfect quote to begin my year. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or a “master”, we are or should be looking up to our “masters” for inspiration. MJ was also quoted as saying,” You try to be as original as you can be without thinking about statistics. You just go from the soul and from the heart”. With the digital world taking over our industry, I believe there are some rules but we should not be bound by them. I believe we must go with our soul and our heart and we will create unimaginable images that are like no others. MJ also said, “If I’m not creating, I’m not happy”. As photographers, we are constantly creating images for clients that will grab their heart and soul, make them cry, make them laugh and bring them JOY! I have grown up in this absolutely wonderful association. I remember my very first PPO banquet as a little girl. There were so many people in that room that it stole my heart. So many of those wonderfully creative photographers have passed from this life and I miss them like crazy. Many of you do not know them. Glen Nelson was the absolute epitome of the greatest photographer in our industry. I was so blessed to be able to watch this incredible man at work and yes his camera settings were right on but that was during the film era and they had to be. It was the expressions of his clients that were priceless. OUR industry IS priceless. For some reason, PPO is not as dominant as it once was. I’m not sure why. My goal for PPO is to flourish! I want it to grow! I want you to see what I have seen for so long. It is not just about the learning…it’s about the heart and soul. PPO is part of my family and I absolutely love it and I want it to be the very best it can be and that I know it is. I want to challenge everyone that reads this magazine to invite all your fellow photographers to join this amazing group. I promise you, we are going to have a very FUN and EXCITING year and I know we will have something to offer every single photographer in Oklahoma. Bottom line….we are going to have fun! I want to have fun! But I promise that you will come out of it by learning more about the wonderful art of photography and you will come out of it with new friends. Mark your schedules NOW for your escape. The dates are MARCH 30-APRIL 1 and AUGUST 24-27. They will be an escape to learn, meet new friends, and to ROCK!!! Photography IS going to ROCK in 2012!

Celia

NEW OFFICERS - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL Shannon Ledford was elected as 2nd Vice President of Professional Photographers of Oklahoma, Inc. at the Fall Convention held in August this year. Ms. Ledford has owned and operated Shannon Kaye Portrait Design since 1998. She specializes in children’s and family portraits, but her recent adventure has been sports photography. With three children very involved in sports, it has been a fun new addition to Shannon’s schedule! Being a mother of four and running a home-based business certainly has its challenges, but she considers it such a blessing to have a job that she loves. Ledford’s children's work has won several state awards, national merits and been published in the PPA Loan Collection. In January of 2007, she became a Certified Professional Photographer and earned a PPA Master of Photography degree. Although she is very proud of these accomplishments, the greatest award to her is capturing special moments for her clients that they will have for a lifetime. Ledford is looking forward to the leadership opportunities in Professional Photographers of Oklahoma, Inc. James Butler was elected to the 2012 Executive Council as Secretary at he Fall Convention held in Oklahoma City. James grew up in Colorado and moved to Tulsa in 1982 to pursue a career in aviation. Photography as a hobby was natural since his Dad worked for Kodak and they had an endless supply of film and processing. Photography remained a hobby until James met his soon-to-be wife, Lisa, who also held a passion for photography since high school. With little more than dreams and a lot of optimism, we pursued our love of photography and started LisaLee Photography, working in their home. As business, and their knowledge of photography grew, they soon moved to their current location in the Philtower in downtown Tulsa. Lisa and James are working towards a Master of Photography degree through PPA and studying to take the CPP test soon!

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS OF OKLAHOMA AWARD LOY AND ANN PAYNE... THE PPA NATIONAL AWARD

Loy A. Payne, M.Photog., Cr., CPP, and wife Ann had yet another Professional Photographers of America accolade bestowed upon them at the Professional Photographers of Oklahoma state convention’s awards banquet--the prestigious and highly coveted National Award--Loy & Ann from Owasso, OK were given the "V.I.P. treatment" by their daughter. It was a complete surprize to Loy & Ann. The award was created in 1958 by the late PPA president Louis Garcia of Eastchester, NY “for all the hard work by others to further the profession while asking nothing in return.” Garcia decided these individuals should be recognized for their exceptional contributions and created the distinguished national award. Each year, PPA makes the award available to its state, regional, national and international affiliates. While PPA bestows many awards to affiliate members, this is by far the most coveted and prized honor. The National Award is given to individuals who go beyond what is expected of them. The plaque reads “for service to professional photography.” “What it means is ‘thank you’ for your time, your talent and your loyalty to professional photography,” said PPA past president and multiple National Award recipient Marvel Nelson. “This year’s recipient has played a major role in furthering the cause of professional photography,” said current PPA President Don Dickson, M.Photog., Cr., CPP

Wesley Joel Miller, 49, Photographer, Friend, Father, Dies Wesley was born May 22, 1962, in Oklahoma City, to James and Delores O’Neil Miller. He was one of four children. He has one older sister, Vickie Miller Nicolle Clanahan. He has one older brother, Mike Miller. He has one younger brother, Kyle Miller. Wesley began dating Debbie Friar in high school and became a regular attendee of First Baptist Church of Moore where the Friar family was members at that time. Wes and Debbie’s family has been a member of Emmaus Baptist Church since the early ‘90s. On July 15, 1983, Wesley married his high school sweetheart, Deborah Friar. This summer they celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Wes worked for the Moore Dairy Queen during junior high and high school, where his mother was manager. He had a passion for photography and worked at Hanson’s House of Photography after high school and then opened Photography by Wes. He specialized in weddings, seniors, families, children and sports. He was active in the Metro Professional Photographers Association. Wes worked his way though the offices of the Board of Directors to become President in 1998. He was also a member of Professional Photographers of Oklahoma and worked with the Audio Committee, was Official Photographer several years, and on the Print Committee. He started working for UPS in 2004. His last position was in the safety department. Wesley enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. He sometimes coached and loved watching his children play their various sports. He liked to grill and smoke meats for family get-togethers. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father. Wesley loved water sports of all kinds. His parents, James and Delores Miller, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Debbie, children, Cody of Moore, Thomas and Lora of the home; one granddaughter: Khira of Moore; mother-in-law: Ramona Friar of OKC; father and mother-in-law: Odell and Dee Friar of OKC; one sister and two brothers and their spouses: Vicki and Skip Clanahan of OKC, Mike and Lynn Miller and Kyle and Lisa Miller of Tahlequah; sister-in-law: Krista Friar of Seattle, WA; and sister-in-law and spouse: Colleen and Bob Horton of Fort Worth, TX; ten nieces and three nephews; and numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews. Wesley Joel Miller passed from this world, Saturday, November 12, after a brief, but valiant battle with stomach cancer. The family wants to thank the many friends, health care providers and co-workers who have supported Wesley and his family during this time, the staff of Summit Medical Center and Emmaus Baptist Church family as well as many prayer chains around the world. If you choose, in lieu of flowers donations could be made in honor of Wesley to the American Cancer Society, Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund or the PPO Scholarship Fund. Page 10

Read the Fine Print by Clem Wehner

Ever notice that whenever you get interested in a new car, you start seeing them everywhere? A similar thing happened to me the other day. I had just read an article about the Business Software Alliance (BSA), and the very same day I heard a commercial on an Oklahoma City radio station about it. It invited the public to make some money by reporting businesses that were using pirated (illegally copied) software. It promised complete anonymity and rewards up to $1 million. It said you don’t even need to work for the business you suspect has illegal software, just report their name by phone or the internet. What an easy way to make a little extra money, just in time for Christmas! What great revenge if you left a company for unpleasant reasons. The BSA was formed by the major software manufacturers to enforce copyright protection of their products. They target businesses, large and small, and have the right to audit your computers, levy big fines, and make you miserable. You could get a letter requiring you to audit your own computers and report the result to them. Worse, the knock on your door may be a BSA auditor, accompanied by a US marshal, ready to go through all your computers. They’ll want to see proof that you purchased all the software you are using. It’s not good enough just to have the original box and CDs, you must have the original receipt with your name on it. That’s because the fine print that you did not read when you clicked “I agree” during installation probably granted a license to use the software only to the original purchaser. Furthermore, you probably gave them permission to search your business, or home if that’s where your business is, all in some fine print gobble-de-gook that you didn’t bother to read. While you might think that they are only after big business, the BSA is increasingly auditing small business, because that’s where a lot of violations are. Just a few months ago an eye doctor in Louisiana was fined over $100,000. If you have software on your computers that you don’t have the receipt for, that somebody gave you, that you copied illegally, that you have installed on more computers than allowed, that you are using after the expiration date of the license agreement, etc., then you need to read more about the BSA (www.BSA.org). It was created and funded by major companies like Microsoft, Corel, Adobe, and others that photographers rely upon. The BSA is becoming increasingly aggressive, especially with small business, and the fact that we are now hearing their commercials in Oklahoma means they are “interested” in us. They are serious about their task and reportedly not friendly. Some have likened them to the IRS in a very bad mood. So, inventory your software and make sure you can prove you bought it. Be sure to read the fine print of the license agreement before you click “I agree” next time you install software on your computer.
