Oh no... not another one...?'. That s r i g h t , another issue o f Endless Struggle'. For l a c k o f a b e t t e r term, w e ' l l j u s t c a l l i t an a n a r c h i s t punk z i n e , as t h a t i s b a s i c a l l y the c o n t e n t .

This issue we have gone t o offset printing, this way many more people w i l l be able t o see Endless S t r u g g l e (do they want to?) as we have gone from 100 issues t o 500. Not a huge amount but t h a t ' s 4-00 more people'. Also t h i s issue i s an a r t i c l e on 3rd world punk, which I think i s very i n t e r e s t ing, c o n s i d e r i n g the s i t u a t i o n i n many of these c o u n t r i e s . E. A Vancouver Anarchist Black Gross has j u s t formed i n the past months, so we hope t h e r e p r i n t from Black Flag w i l l show j u s t what an A.B.C. i s , & perhaps why we should a l l suppo r t i t . I f every time a v o i c e i s r a i s e d i t becomes gagged by the government we would only stop moving forward'.

I n the never-ending a t t empt t o b a t t e r the poor and squeeze every l a s t p r o f i t from the poor, Government has again a t t a c k e d the poor here i n Vancouver. Vancouver C i t y Council i s p l a n n i n g t o close down thousands of i l l e g a l s u i t e s over the next 10 years.

More than 20,000 homes are at r i s k . I n the past C i t y Council has l e t people stay i n these s u i t e s i f the landl o r d needed the money or i f the tenant needed a place to l i v e . These were c a l l e d h a r d s h i p cases.

Last month the c i t y voted t o end the h a r d s h i p p o l i c y .

This means t h a t up t o l.ooo people might lose t h e i r homes soon. David Lane works at the Tenants Rights A c t i o n Centre, he sais "Closing down these s u i t e s w i l l wipe out every s i n g l e vacancy i n the lower mainl a n d . Rents w i l l go up, more people w i l l be f o r c e d t o use food banks", I l l e g a l s u i t e s are u s u a l l y i n basements. They are i l l egal because they are i n areas of the c i t y where the law sais t h a t only s i n g l e f a m i l y homes can be. This law i s c a l l e d a zoning law.

Remember a few years ago when Toxic shock Syndrome was i n the news? The cond i t i o n was l a r g e l y appearant i n users of P r o c t o r & Gambles 'Rely' brand tampons. The tampons were found t o c o n t a i n Polyacr y l a t e c r y s t a l s which t u r n t o a l i q u i d absorbing g e l a few minutes a f t e r contact w i t h l i q u i d .

P&G were f o r c e d t o remove t h e i r product from the shelves. Of course the company f e l t i t had t o do something w i t h those c r y s t a l s i t spent so much r e s earch & money on, so i t came up w i t h another product t h a t c o u l d be even more absorbant than beforeBabys Disposable Diapers" Yes these convenient l i t t l e diapers c o n t a i n the same deadly i n g r e d i e n t s as those tampons. As a r e s u l t of the 'super absorbancy' parents a r e n ' t changing the babies as o f t e n - a b i g f a c t o r i n the Toxic shock syndrome. The diapers are considered a r i s k i f t h e r e are any l e g ions on the s k i n (such as from diaper r a s h ? ) . The Wall Street Journal repo r t e d t h a t the P & G consumer complaint l i n e r e c i e v e d 2 5 0 c a l l s one month from parents who had n o t i c e d these chemical beads c l i n g i n g t o t h e i r babies s k i n . City takes aim at graffiti problem

s whole a r t i c l e came about a f t e r I had t o sent t o Joseph of Empty records f o r 'Tourde Farce 11', a casse t t e comp. of world punk bands. I became i n t e r e s t e d i n 3rd w o r l d punk bands a l o t a f t e r h e a r i n g some of _ t h e bands, & I wondered how MUTANTES Pi bands a c t u a l l y came about " " i n these areas which are o f t e n used as pawnsin the power-struggle between East & West. So when Joe asked i f I ' d be i n t e r e s t e d i n an a r t i c l e on 3rd w o r l d punk I went r i g h t t o work on i t .

But why not get a person i n one of these c o u n t r i e s ?

W e l l , I thought t h a t an ove r a l l view o f the s i t u a t i o n could best be made by someone ' l o o k i n g i n ' , who had c o n t a c t w i t h many countries.

I do n o t pretend t o know, but I would imagine t h a t someone i n say, B r a z i l , would not have an o v e r a l l view of say, the Canary I s l a n d s . I would l i k e t o have a r t i c l e s on s p e c i f i c 3rd w o r l d bands i n t h e f u t u r e , & I hope t h i s i s a good i n t r o d u c t i o n . . . I would a l s o urge everyone t o w r i t e t o a t l e a s t one o f the addresses l i s t e d , commu n i c a t e ! Endless S t r u g g l e ; You say i t took 2 years t o compile a l l the bands on 'Tour de Farce 1 1 ' , what a l l does t h i s l e n g t h of time i n v o l ve? I s t h e r e a l o t of hassle i n -getting m a t e r i a l from bands, i e p o s t a l , time?

Joseph; Yeah, i t took about 21/2 years t o compile t h i s tape, mainly because of the amount of work i n v o l v e d i n assembling 41 bands on a C-90 tape. This i n c l u d e s f i n d i n g an address from a c o u n t r y , w r i t i n g and asking f o r addresses of bands of

t h a t c o u n t r y , then w r i t i n g those bands, l i s t e n i n g t o the tape & t r a n s f e r r i n g the best song t o the master, & f i n a l l y , copying l y r i c s , a r t , addresses e t c . & doing the l a y o u t f o r the pages of the book t h a t goes w i t h the tape. I t was f a i r l y easy to make a tape w i t h about 20 c o u n t r i e s represented, a l o t of the time was spent w a i t i n g f o r / & d i g g i n g up the addresses from t h e l a s t 14 c o u n t r i e s . Often as was the case f o r I s r a e l , Tunisi a , & Luxembourg, I found addresses, but never r e c ieved r e p l i e s . More time was spent w a i t i n g f o r the l a s t few tapes t o f i n a l l y be d e l i v e r e d . Doing the l a y o u t & w r i t i n g f o r the book (104pgs) took a considerable amount of time. As far as hassles go, most unknown bands are happy t o submit songs f o r samplers, so d e a l i n g w i t h unknown bands i s not u s u a l l y a hassle.

Known bands are a d i f f erent s t o r y , which i s why I u s u a l l y don't deal w i t h them. I want t o p o i n t out t h a t now known bands on the tape l i k e the Stupids, V i c ious C i r c l e , both were t o t a l l y unknown bands then & had sent me demo, tapes bef o r e they had ever released any records. ES; Who i s a l l i n v o l v e d w i t h Empty records ords? How d i d you get s t arted ( f i n a n c i a l l y , c o l l - ~ e c t i v e l y e t c . ) ? Do you" also d i s t r i b u t e material i n Germany? Joseph; Empty records was- s t a r t e d by s e v e r a l f r i e n d s & I when we a l l l i v e d i n the San Fransisco area. Our f i r s t 3 tapes were released t h e r e .

Now t h a t I l i v e i n W. Germany my g i r l - f r i e n d Donver & I run most of the operations from here, but my f r i e n d s Volker & Blake s t i l l handle a l o t of the work i n the S t a t e s . They w i l l both soon begin US operations of Empty from S e a t t l e Wa. F i n a n c i a l l y we don't b o r r ow money t o pay f o r r e l e a s es, r a t h e r , we use personal money & also income from record & tape sales t o pay for upcoming r e l e a s e s . We do d i s t r i b u t e here i n Nurnberg, mainly through our s m a l l shop t h a t we opened l a s t year. We u s u a l l y take 5-10 copies each of other l a b e l s r e l e a s e s . Joseph; W e l l , j u s t because a l a b e l or dist r i b u t o r (or band) i s l a r g e doesn't mean i t ' s bad, but we a l l know t h a t most of the l a r g e ones d e f i n a t e l y do suck. The sad f a c t i s t h a t none of these l a r g e l a b e l s / d i s t r i b u t o r s ; Roir, Rough Trade, or Combat, or most others, w i l l s i g n an unknown band, & i n the r a r e case when they do, they only do i t i f they f i g u r e they can make money on them.

Most of the l a r g e r ' i n d i e ' labels, unfortuantly, f o r a l l t h e i r 'indy' r h e t o r i c , do l i t t l e f o r the r e a l i n dependant scene, & i n f a c t do more harm than good.

This tape was our attempt t o beat the number of c o u n t r i e s on ROIRS 'World c l a s s punk' which we d i d by f a r , as , w e l l as p r o v i d i n g the 104pg book, a l l a t a f a r lower c o s t . Anyway, now I s t i l l search f o r 3 r d w o r l d punk mainly because i t ' s some of the v e r y l i t t l e punk music t h a t t o me i s s t i l l done i n the s p i r i t of punk. These bands are formed, o f t e n i l l e g a l l y , w i t h a bare minimum of equipment & resources.

I laugh when I read about 'so-and-so' speed-metal band from t h e s t a t e s ( o r W 7

Germany) t r y i n g t o get a c o n t r a c t on Combat or whatever, & then t h e r e are thes these by f a r s u p e r i o r bands t h a t p l a y on destroyed g u i tars with 3 strings l e f t t h a t b a r e l y manage t o r e c ord a tape on a s h i t t y boom box t h a t sometimes r i s k imprisonment by even being i n such a band.

N2 (Columbia) i s punk, DRI i s t h e usual money-hungry i d i o t i c music b i z hype.

ES; Have you seen much g r owth i n 3 r d w o r l d punk bands, as i n numbers of them, communication etc?

Joseph; W e l l , i t ' s hard -to say i f the scenes i n these c o u n t r i e s are new, or we j u s t hadn't known about them b e f o r e . I n some countr i e s , l i k e Peru, the scene has grown q u i c k l y i n a s h o r t l e n g t h of t i m e .

The P h i l l i p i n e s have a v e r y good scene, w i t h l o t s of v e r y good bands, but one s t i l l hears almost n o t h i n g about i t . As f a r as communi c a t i o n g o e s , you would be s u r p r i s e d a t how much peopl e know, w i t h l i t t l e or no resources.

I also often get fanzines from these c o u n t r i e s , w i t h a r t i c l e s on a l l s o r t s of bands & topics.

I n many east European count r i e s , access t o a copy machine i s i l l e g a l , so t h e r e are no Fanzines, but people s t i l l seem t o know what's going on. ES;In your experience & contact w i t h 3 r d w o r l d punk do you t h i n k there's more of a pol i t i c a l / s o c i a l awareness i n t h e i r l y r i c s . . . considering the s i t u a t i o n i n many of these c o u n t r i e s ( i n t e r v e n t i o n , c o r p o r a t i o n s g$c V? Joseph; For the most p a r t t h e r e i s a very keen awareto t h e i r p o l i t i c a l s i t u a t ion, i s & has always been very immune & distanced t o p o l i t i c a l t u r m o i l & revol u t i o n , whereas many of these 3 r d w o r l d c o u n t r i e s are now going through e i t h er armed r e v o l u t i o n s or d e a l i n g w i t h oppressive US backed f a s c i s t & d i c t o r i a l governments. So f o r them, oppression i s an everyday p a r t of l i f e , & i t does come out i n t h e i r l y r i c s & f a n z i n e s . ES; What's the most obscure l o c a t i o n you have contacted a band from? Do many of the band have d i f f i c u l t y i n g e t t i n g equipment t o s t a r t ?

a r e n ' t too many bands being heard from these c o u n t r i e s ? Joseph; W e l l , I have now i n my tape c o l l e c t i o n music from P h i l i p i n e s , Canary I s l a n d s , USSR East Germany, Peru, Columbia.

I'm i n c o n t a c t (and w a i t i n g on music) from Malaysia & Luxembourg. I have heard of music from but have been unsuccesful i n r e c i e v i n g any from; I s r a e l , China, Venezuala, & T u n i s i a . Yeah, g e t t i n g equipment i s one of the hardest t h i n g s f o r many of these bands, where g u i t a r s can cost h a l f a years wage & s t r i n g s are u n a v a i l a b l e .

A c t u a l l y , t h e r e are r e a l l y q u i t e a c t i v e scenes i n these c o u n t r i e s , & the f a c t t h a t they are not o f ten known I t h i n k i s more the f a u l t of scenes here i n our 'developed' countr i e s . When I used t o s e l l cassettes a t shows here i n W. Germany, I would t r y t o s e l l some of the 3 r d w o r l d tapes, but people would a l ways be more i n t e r e s t e d i n the l a t e s t speedcore r e c ords/tapes. I would t e l l them t h a t Escorbuto Cronico i s lOOx b e t t e r than Chaos UK, & they would ask 'is i t - f a s t e r ? ' I guess 3 r d w o r l d punk i s not t r e n dy enough. Also discouraging i s t h a t so many people have a b s o l o u t e l y no idea where most c o u n t r i e s are, even i f i t borders t h e i r own country! Punks got i t s f a i r share o f i g n o r a n t morons, t h a t ' s f o r sure.

ES; What k i n d of communica t i o n i s there i n some of these c o u n t r i e s ? How do you f i n d many of- the more obscure bands? Joseph; W e l l , t h e r e are zines i n most c o u n t r i e s , although i n some c o u n t r i e s , l i k e most E. European c o u n t r i e s access t o copy machines i s i l l e g a l , so i t ' s v e r y d i f f i c u l t t h e r e . One t h i n g t h a t does seem apparent though, i s the importance of shows. They do not occur t h a t o f t e n , but when they do, they have good t u r n o u t s & a l o t of exchanging of ideas takes place.

I t h i n k i t ' s the musical s t y l e we a l l know as punk, i n a l l i t ' s v a r i a t i o n s & t r e n d s , & the independant, aggressive a t t i t u d e associated w i t h the music, although t h e r e are a l o t of bands t h a t have an e q u a l l y independant, aggr e s s i v e a t t i t u d e , but musi c a l l y are t o t a l l y d i f f e r ent (Nurse w i t h Wound, Zovi e t France). I p e r s o n a l l y l i k e music t h a t i s a n t i governmant, a n t i - a u t h o r i t y , a n t i - b i g music business, & i s m u s i c a l l y rough & demand i n g . Punk o b v i o u s l y f a l l s i n t o t h i s (some of i t any way), but I also l i k e i n d u s t r i a l & other more experi m e n t a l bands. They were the only band I've seen t h a t r e a l l y seemed t o know from experience the t r o u b l e s of oppression & p o v e r t y . I t h i n k t o be r e a l l y a punk band, being from the 3 r d world i s a prer e q u i s i t e ! r W e l l , ever since I got i n t o punk I've always heard i t s a i d t h a t punk, p a r t i c u l a r i l y the p o l i t i c a l / s o c i a l content o f some bands l y r i c s j u s t 'preaches t o t h e conv e r t e d * . I n other words, much of punk j u s t repeats what a l l punks already know or t h i n k . Most t i m e s , the people who say t h i s are us u a l l y very a - p o l i t i c a l & don't r e a l l y care about what i s going on, but I suppose that i s irrelevant.

I f punk r e a l l y was j u s t 'preaching t o the converted* then i t could be s a i d t h a t bands w i t h s o c i a l - p o l i t i c a l thoughts or messages, such as C o n f l i c t , A n t i - s e c t , Dead S i l e n c e , Crass e t c . were j u s t banging t h e i r heads ag a i n s t a w a l l . This would be much l i k e suddenly b e l i e v i n g i n god(ha! ) & then going t o a church t o t e l l everyone t h a t they should a l s o b e l ieve i n god! This example i s as o p p i s i t e t o the basis of punk as you can g e t ( h o p e f u l l y ) , b u t I hope i t shows my p o i n t . I f t h i s were the case then there would be no punks eati n g i n McDonalds, j o i n i n g up i n t h e army, u s i n g G i l l e t t e p r o d u c t s , t h e r e would be no s e x i s t or r a c i s t punks, & yet we a l l know t h a t t h e r e are such punks/people who do these s h i t t h i n g s . I do not t h i n k any l o g i c a l ararguement can be made t o support the b u l l s h i t t h a t I have j u s t l i s t e d . Bands with intelligent lyrics must always be out t h e r e , because t h e r e i s a l a r g e audience r i g h t w i t h i n punk t h a t needs t o hear these.

They o f f e r n o t h i n g i n i n t e l l i g e n t thought, noth ing i n ideas f o r change, only s t u p i d l y r i c s meant t o e n t e r t a i n you. Yet these are some o f the bigge$t bands, the most popular.

I t seems t h a t way w i t h e v e r y t h i n g . Fun songs can be humorous, but n o t a song t h a t r e l i e s on gays, womin, or r a c i a l groups t o be funny.

People (& punks are people) j u s t don't want t o know about t h e genocidal war i n C e n t r a l America, they don't want t o know about s t a r v a t i o n & the l i n k t o beef production, nothing.

Probably because once, or i f , they ever face up t o t h e i r own r o l e i n p e r p e t u a t i n g these s i t u a t i o n s , they'd have t o be r e s p o n s i b l e t o themselve selves f o r once i n t h e i r lives.

C h r i s t on Parade; We r e c orded the new Lp l a s t summer and since then we've been p l a y i n g l o c a l l y & a l so went down t o San Diego.

Also, Malcom decided t o ret i r e from the band t o have more time f o r other t h i n g s , i t was almost the end of the band but we got a new b a s s i s t (Ron) and wrote a whole bunch of new songs & s t a r t e d p l a y i n g again.

Although l o s i n g Malcom sucks, we're as t i g h t as ever now & Ron i s a r e a l l y good b a s s i s t .

ES: So the new Lp has j u s t come out, how i s i t d i f f e r ent from previous releases and are you pleased w i t h the outcome? COP; We're n o t i n t o the metal scene 'per se*, There are some good bands but i t tends t o be r e a l l y g e n e r i c , e s p e c i a l l y as f a r as l y r i c s go. I t ' s a matter of musical t a s t e , I guess, but we're not i n t o a r o c k s t a r t h i n g . I t h i n k bands should go f o r a more o r i g i n a l sound of t h e i r own & r e a l l y t r y t o express themselves i n s t e a d of p l a y i n g the same r i f f s and s i n g i n g about Satan & s h i t . COP; Some o f us work (we have t o pay rent'.), & some of us do not ( r e n t s t r i k e ! ) . I f you could make a l i v i n g doing something worthwhile & meani n g f u l i t would be g r e a t , not h i n g gets done w i t h o u t work.

BUT the whole system i s s e t up f o r wageslavery'. To survive i n our western s o c i e t y you need money t o e a t , sleep or do a n y t h i n g . To get t h i s money you've got t o s e l l your time & energy t o perform a meaningless task t o h e l p someone else p r o f i t , w h i l e they s i t back & are t h e . o n l y ones r e a l l y g a i n i n g . Working f u l l t i m e takes up most of your time & then you spend a l almost a l l o f your earnings on s t a y i n g a l i v e . There are c o l l e c t i v e companys where everyone owns or earns an equal share, and t h a t ' s r e a l l y c o o l . Also, there are ways t r e j e c t the commercialism & do t h i n g s on your own. You can make a l o t of s t u f f you need (brew your own beer'.).

REVIVAL The revival of the Anarchist Black Cross as such however took place as a result of Stuart Christie's imprisonment in Spain.

With the publicity attracted,'he received solidarity from a great many countries, and shared this with fellow-Anarchist prisoners. As a result of which we found that aid to Saprtish prisoners was possible.

"When Christie returned, he wanted to aid prisoners in Spain and began to work with Albert Meltzer who for some years past had taken over the Mutual Aid from M.P.J. Acharya in India working for Asian prisoners. . The Black Cross first worked for the release of Migual Garcia who was near to the end of his sentence (which did not .mean automatic liberty), and when he came out, he joined them in London to organise the International Black Cross.

AIMS The aims of the Black Cross as reconstituted was to provide a 'springboard'effect — get people to work for the release of, and where possible the assistance of, political prisoners and Anarchists in particular — and in turn get inspiration from them in carrying on the struggle.

Help came immediately from many comrades at home and abroad. In particular during the last days of Franco numerous food parcels went to Spain — these meant a great deal as prisoners were being refused the right to work if they engaged in demonstrations against the regime, which were breaking out throughout the prisons of Spain as the Franco regime was cracking.

It meant that they had to get help from their none too affluent families, or starve.

The encouragement that the parcels brought or the financial assistance received, meant they had more heart to struggle.

INTERNATIONAL

An A n a r c h i s t Black Gross has j u s t formed i n Vancouve er, though t h e r e are many ABC's across the w o r l d .

During the Russian civil war, when the Red Cross was active in organising relief, it was thought better to change the name to avoid confusion, and so it became the Anarchist Black Cross. : After the Bolsheviks seized power, the organisation moved to Berlin — still with its main aid Chicago-based - and continued to help Russian prisoners (now of the Soviet Union) with the added task of helping the ORIGINS victims of Italian Fascism, and prisoners of The Anarchist Red Cross started in Tsarist the post-war German reaction. Finally Russia. It was active on two fronts — the organising of aid for political prisoners and when Germany succumbed to fascism, and the depression hit America, the decline in deportees, and organising self-defence the amount of financial aid and the huge against political raids by Cossacks. In this latter capacity it helped start Jewish work- wave of people need ing that support, broke the back of the organisation. Neverer's self-defence against pogroms. It was sustained economically by Russian Anarch- theless, Chicago remained a source of ists in America, particularly in Chicago. ' strength for years up to recent times.

GROUPS

It was not our intention to set up Black Cross groups in other countries. Our idea was that we could channel the information to groups about prisoners, concentrated on Spain — at a time when the Anarchist prisoners were still a sizeable proportion;^-: and they could act directly. We hated the idea of becoming a bureaucratic charity in which money, goes to upkeep. We resisted that. Other Black Cross groups sprang up in other countries, particularly in Germany ind Italy —since then almost everywhere, some with slightly different ideas to our own, others the same.

They have had their own problems — major ones too - for the railwayman, Pinelli, the secretary of the Black Cross in Milan, was murdered by the Italian police in being flung from a window (which still amuses the bourgeoisie as shown in 'Death ofay Anarchist' - deaths of Statists never do). Georg von Rauch, secretary o; 'he

Slack Cross in Berlin, was murdered by the armed police. But who would believe these people — anarchists — against the word pf officers with forty years experience in the force, asked the Berlin police chief, which statement identified them pretty clearly as Nazis.

The greatest satisfaction we had was the release of Goliardo Fiaschi. Released from 20 years imprisonment under Franco he was re-arrested and charged on deportation to his native Italy under an old Fascist conviction. Our intervention apparently brought his release (it happened barely a week after we approached the authorities).

There were a number of other cases where we managed to obtain the release of people either already sentenced or on trial. International protest probably saved the lives of the Murrays, but so far alas they are still in an Irish jail. We were delighted to find that our protest swelled the many protests of others which, with his own heroic stand, secured the release of Black American activist Martin Sostre.

Prison governors or examining judges have sometimes been overwhelmed by the response stirred up. When Brenda Christie was arrested on a trumped up charge in Western Germany, the judge protested that he had never been so deluged with complaints from all over the world. The French examining judge in another case — involving Jean Weir and Octavio Alberola — claimed a nervous breakdown as a result of the same 'mistreatment'.

NOW One offshoot of the Anarchist Black Cross in this country was the transformation of the ABC into Black Flag (in 1971). Like the Black Cross, it was intended to promote mutual aid and activism among what seemed to be the anarchist movement at the time. Now Black Flag and the Anarchist Black Cross aren't.precisely identical and we haven't yet got down to working out our 'constitution'. . While Black Flag is produced in London, contributions come from all over Britain and the world. The ABC keeps good contact with Anarchists around the world and we exchange Black Flag with many publications from the anarchist press today. Black

Flag and publications we have also produced are sent free on request to prisoners anywhere in the world where they can be received.

Through the pages of Black Flag and by protests, pickets and demonstrations we go on struggling for the freedom of class war prisoners and encourage Anarchists to organise.

More recently we have tried to organise a more efficient Black Cross network in Britain and have had some success here. On an international level, Anarchist Black Cross groups have recently sprungup in Canada, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Australia and we hear there is talk of setting up similar groups in other countries. We obviously applaud such initiatives and urge groups in all countries to do the same.

At present our activities are centred around the case of Katsuhisa Omori — sentenced to death in Japan for a bombing he never committed. Other cases we. have recently been involved include Greek hunger striker Victor Armanious, the Vancouver 5 (Canada), CNT-AIT and libertarian prisoners in Spain and others.

L o c a l l y , the A n a r c h i s t Black Gross (Vancouver) has been very busy. On Jan. 7th they had a demonstrati o n f o r Katsuhisa Omori, a p o l i t i c a l a c t i v i s t i n Japan.

Omori was a r r e s t e d over 10 years ago & accused o f bombi n g a Gov't, o f f i c e on Hokkaido I s l a n d i n March '?6.

Omori has c o n s t a n t l y p r o t ested h i s innocence, a l t h o he does sympathise w i t h the a c t i o n s . The evidence against Omori i s poor, i n c l u d i n g the f a c t t h a t Omori had 'sugar & b a t t e r y ' s i n h i s home, as i n g r e d i e n t s o f a bomb'. The demo, was small & y e t there was a heavy p o l i c e presence, t a k i n g photos o f p r o t e s t e r s , 'sneaking' around, g e n e r a l l y t r y i n g t o be a nuisance.

On Jan. 20th another demo was h e l d , t h i s time a t JAL a i r l i n e s (Jan. ? t h demo a t the Japanese c o n s u l a t e ) .

Omoris appeal d e c i s i o n was on the 2 1 s t , & he was sentenced t o death once again.

The Vancouver ABC a l s o puts out small b u l l e t i n s on events or a c t i o n s , & update on p r i s o n e r s s i t u a t i o n s .

There's so much hate, i t ' s f a r t o o much of i t . To us i t seems l i k e hate i s t h e main reason f o r a l o t of bad happenings i n todays w o r l d & t h a t i s what we're t r y i n g t o g e t across w i t h the name- we're not a t a l l i n t o g l o r i f y i n g hate, t h i n g s would be a l o t b e t t e r w i t h o u t i t . These days t h e r e are so much/too much metal i n fluences i n t h e punk/hc scenes. We don't mind i f people l i k e t h i s k i n d of music b u t most of these so c a l l e d crossover bands picked up on the s t u p i d s e x i s t a t t i t u d e from metal and i t i s sad t o see t h a t people who dare c a l l themselves punks support t h i s shit'.

ES; I n your attempts t o communicate your l y r i c s / b e l i e f s do you go outside o f the a t - t i m e s r e s t r i c t i n g l i m i t s of s i n g i n g (especi a l l y i n punk bands)& do you put out f i v e r s w i t h l y r i c s etc? SMH; This i s something t h a t we maybe should have done coz i t ' s the same when we p l a y as w i t h other punk bands...you can't hear t h e l y r i c s . We t r y t o e x p l a i n between the songs what they are about.

We always meet a l o t o f people a t g i g s & we f i n d i t b e t t e r t o t a l k w i t h people & get our b e l i e f s across i n t h i s way. When you're on stage & say something i t sometimes sounds l i k e what YOU'RE saying i s r i g h t & t h a t you i n t h i s way are f o r c i n g t h i n g s on o t h e r s .

I t ' s better, t o discuss subj e c t s w i t h other people i n stead o f t r y i n g t o t e l l them what's wrong or r i g h t .

SMH; So f a r we have done 3 4 g i g s , 9 o f them i n Norway, & t h e r e s t i n Germany, H o l l and, A u s t r i a , I t a l y , Denmark, & Belgium.

There's only two towns here i n Norway where we can p l a y & i t i s kinda boring t o play f o r the same people over & over again. Mostly the response has been r e a l l y good. There's an awful l o t o f g r eedy, power-hungry people, who wouldn't be able t o handle i n d i v i d u a l freedom.

They would use i t t o opp ress others i n order t o g e t more personal power & t h a t i s j u s t how i t i s today.

I t i s o f course p o s s i b l e t o p i c k up some ideas from the anarchy i d e o l o g y & use them i n our d a i l y l i f e .

This i s something you can see i n many punk/hc scenes, the way people are l i v i n g

t o g e t h e r , sharing what t h e r e i s & h e l p i n g each o t h e r . SMH; We have a l l been i n t o punk f o r n e a r l y 10 y r s & we have seen how t h i n g s have changed & progressed.

Today punk t o us means somet h i n g outside the systems norms, being able t o t h i n k & act w i t h o u t anyone t e l l ing us what & how, and being a p a r t of a movement which i s growing b e t t e r and bigger a l l the time & so i t w i l l continue. We c a l l ourselves human but i f someone asked us i f we were punk we wouldn't l i e & say no.

ES; Do any members of SMH do a zine or put on gigs?

SMH; None of us are doing any z i n e s , i n f a c t there i s no good zines here i n Oslo at all.

Gunnar & Ote(who i s some k i n d of manager f o r the band) u s u a l l y arrange gigs here w i t h f o r i e g n band bands. Borre i s always beh i n d the mixing desk at gigs t r y i n g t o make bands sound as good as p o s s i b l e .

ES; What's the Norway scene l i k e r i g h t now? Any bands t o watch f o r ?

SMH: There's only 2 towns i n Norway where there i s a scene at a l l . Trondheim & Oslo.

Oslo i s the biggest & the one we know best... the scene here has been going since ' 7 8 & i s today more a c t i v e than ever both p o l i t i c a l l y & musically.

BLITZ i s the name of a s e l f -

r u l e d youth centre where loads of a c t i v i t i e s are cent e r e d . There's a vegetar ian cafe, an a n t i - v i v e s e c t ion o f f i c e , p r a c t i s e rooms, 8 t r a c k s t u d i o , the only a l l female r u l e d r a d i o s t a t i o n i n the world i s based on the top f l o o r .

The cafe i s where the gigs take place & u s u a l l y theres 1 5 0 - 2 5 0 people at every show, t h i s i s also the . place f o r meetings where people discuss plans & demonstrations & actions.

There has never been as many" bands here as i t i s now'.

Welfare i s the minimum of what you need t o s u r v i v e & i t ' s d i f f i c u l t t o do anyt h i n g when you don't have any money. We don't make any money (we l o s e ) by being i n a he band but we got t o have i n s t r u m e n t s , amps & t h a t k i n d of s t u f f . To go on tour you need a car, t o v i s i t f r i e n d s who don't l i v e here i n Norway you need money. A l l of us have been l i v ing on w e l f a r e money i n per iods & we p r e f e r having a job t h a t we l i k e i n s t e a d .

ES; Are t h e r e any.active squats i n Norway? I s there a problem w i t h p o l i c e ?

SMH; There has been s e v e r a l squat i n g s t h i s year ( 8 7 ) but the p o l i c e e v i c t e d most of them a f t e r a few weeks. Oslo i s one of the most expensive towns i n the w o r l d t o l i v e in.

To r e n t a f l a t i s e x t remely expensive so t o many people s q u a t t i n g i s the only p o s s i b i l i t y . The p o l ice has been more a c t i v e than ever here t h i s year, e s p e c i a l l y a f t e r a demons t r a t i o n a g a i n s t maggie(UK) when she v i s i t e d Oslo.
