yet filled issue of Profane Existence, and some of you may know it's a little earlier than usual. The reason behind this is that your's truly is heading out to that great Mecca of filth (and punk rock), yes that's right - New York City. That is, I'm heading out hopefully on the 7th of February on which day I will also drop this off at our always reliable printers. I intend to stay in New York for possibly a week or two and upon my return to the snow covered wasteland of Minnesota I will pick up the 'zine - meaning it will probably be out by the 18th or so. Well, there's been some obvious changes in the format. Being the sole member of the editorial committee I de¬ cided to put the news section first and change the emphasis of this 'zine. Also, you may notice a couple of long term contributors are no longer with us. No violent, fist flailing disputes, or even the raising of voices for that matter, just dif¬ ferences of opinion as to what this 'zine is all about. There was also the dilemma of our size. As usual, we have more stuff to put in each issue but lack the space to put fit it all into. A jump to 40 pages, the original intended size of this publication, was considered, but we lack the funds to do that. We're talking another couple of hundred bucks here in addition to the $475 we pay in printing costs, not to mention at least that much in postage alone! In all reality, the next issue will probably be 40 pages but we'll need a strong base of paid advertisers to do this and still keep the cover price at $1. An¬ other thought was to go monthly but this will be impossible unless we could get a few more people on the editorial commit¬ tee to handle such a thing. I wouldn't go as far as to rule it out but I cannot do it myself and expect to work and go to school as well! Realities are harsh I tell you! News of the realm.... Minneapolis has been pretty quiet but there's a lot of things happening behind the scenes. There was another Anti-Authoritarian Forum held which revolved around the film "A Time For Victory" and subsequent discussions on El Salvador. This one went really well as there was a coherent
focus to our discussion - unlike the trash session that took place the first time around. There's gonna be another on the 2nd of March which will be on organiza¬ tion tactics at demos - where somebody I think I'm distantly related to will give a presentation and discussion. There's also a benefit tacking place on March 2nd in celebration of Interna¬ tional Women's Day. The money raised will go towards bringing Laura Brown from the Feminist Federation of Health Care (she will be here in April teaching women's self sufficiency and self-extrac¬ tion) There's gonna be some speakers and bands playing. This is sponsored by the radical women's group Tornado Warning. There may possibly be articles relating to this in here somewhere if I can get them done. As for events coming up here. The SCRODS are having a record release party on Sunday, March 25th in the 7th Street Entry in downtown Minneapolis. Also playing are MISERY, THE OB¬ SCENE and a band I believe to be called SMILEY SICK BACK or something like that. They have ex-members of TEST MONKEY or something like that. If you can manage be there, as we'll have all the A.Y.F. Distribution stuffs at hand as well as some free shit. There's gonna be another Anti-Au¬ thoritarian Forum 6:00 PM on Friday, April 6th. If unless otherwise posted, it will be held at Mayday Books on 32nd and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. I'm not to clear as to the topic for this month but as a reminder, these are held on the first Friday of each month and are intended to be a forum on discussion for the Anar¬ chist and anti-authoritarian communities. Also, we will be having our third Punx picnic in Minneapolis on Monday, May 28th. (Memorial Day) There should be more info on this elswhere in this issue. Last but not least, there will be a national March For The Animals taking place on Sunday, June 10th in Washing¬ ton D.C. A Minneapolis woman has asked us to pass on the information about a possible car / van pool to be part of a local contigent. Call Rachel at (612) 9221859 if interested.

POLICE MURDER ANTI-FASCIST Gettingen, West Germany On the night of November 17th, 1989 a womyn anti-fascist was hunted to her death by truncheon wielding police. There had been in the days leading up to the 17th numerous attacks from fas¬ cists. On the evening of the 17th a battle between skinheads and anti-fascists took place after an attack by the Nazis. After the fight had taken place, the police inter¬ vened. They caught the skinheads and es¬ corted them to the next bus stop, and then told them to get lost, after that the hunting down of the anti-fascists by the police began. The group of anti-fascist had noticed the police had set up blockades in an at¬
tempt to catch them. An effort on their part to to evade the cops led them into a police trap. As they entered a street the exist and entrance was sealed off preventing their escape. The cops claim that an attempt to arrest them was only to do an I.D. check, but it was heard on police radio that one cop asked the question if they should be beat them up, and also stated that he was tired of this "self justice" and the reply to his question was that there was sufficient force to beat them up. A police attack ensued in which tear gas, dogs and truncheons were used. One of the anti-fascists managed to break through the blockade though, Conny Weismann, and due to the police induced
fear ran in front of a passing car on a busy main street and was killed. All attempts made to help her were prevented by the police, and when the ambulance arrived she was dead. We are calling this murder. That evening a post of mourning was set up on the place where she killed and there were spontaneous demonstrations in numerous cities, where banks and po¬ lice stations were attacked. It is important to see this murder as not an isolated inci¬ dent, but the consequence of the police policy of protecting fascists and attacking anti-fascists. It is in itself a fascist policy and should be dealt with as such. Conny's death will not be forgotten. - articles from Hamburg Ekomedia
OUTRAGE!
state" broke out with enormous fury. The shouting mass then made it's way in the direction of the inner-city. In the inner-city the revolutionary bloc conducted itself in an especially disciplined manner. Almost without exception, only easily justified ob¬ jects of attack, like banks, were trashed, and for the most part were dealt with re¬ sponsibility. the unfortunate thing was that only a handful of people were in the innercity due to the early closing times closing times on Saturday. At the end of the route, the demo passed by the police station, but instead of as planned, the demo went along the backside of the complex. Here is where our entire hate and fury arose. All accessible windows were destroyed, and the cops stationed in a side street were massively attacked. It is now known after the fact, that the pigs were to attack the demo at this point. They had a strong force of troops (1500-2000) and also water cannons, SEK (a specially trained demo attack force), etc. there too. Only the facts that the change of the route was realized too late, and that the cops had technical problems (i.e. broken walkie-talkies, etc.) and are to be thanked that it didn’t come to a police attack.A few hundred did attack the demo however, blocked off the street for a short while, and aimed their water cannons directly at the people, but it never turned into a final escalation situation. What did occur however, is that holes were created in the demo because a lot of people wanted to flee. If an attack oc¬ curred as planned i.e. with water cannons, etc. they would have had to taken into ac¬ count the fact that someone might have been killed, because the street was ex¬ tremely narrow, and provided no escape. Afterwards the police cleared away
from the street, and the demo made its way to a closing rally. We also now know there were orders to attack the demo here, but this wasn’t able to be carried out, because other citizens who participated in the demo were blocking the way of the pigs, and also due to their conditions. The people from Gottingen can tell more about this though. During the rally, and especially after¬ wards, heavy fighting took place with the cops, whose wild beatings and attacks could only be held back by Molotov Cock¬ tails and stone throwing(ed. a Molotov Cocktail on the rocks!?!). There-after the pigs besieged the youth center (Juzi) for a few hours, however then retreated. That evening, however, a youth was knifed by a fascist, after he had been separated from the demo, and had to be taken, badly injured, to the hospital. There were also seven arrests at the control points before the demo. The plans of the pigs to attack the demo made it clear once again that a continu¬ ation of the violence and lack of respect for human life on the part of the pigs still exists. Their brutal procedures led to the murder of Conny, and could well have led to deaths at the demo. I found the demo to be politically a success for us in that our conduct, and the silence during the demo helped to cut through the picture painted of us in the media as wild blood-thirsty trouble makers. Our respon¬ sible behavior and well-aimed attacks also brought us a lot, along with the fact that so many political spectrums came together to make a statement that we're going to fight against state terrorism and murders, and against fascism.
Demonstration Report 11/25/89 The pigs set up check points on the approach roads and confiscated demo equipment by the sack full. The demands had been made earlier by the people from Gottingen for no police controls before the demo, but these demands were not re¬ spected. This was also a problem be¬ cause we weren't prepared before-hand about how we'd react if the police decided to check us, which led to some problems. In the future we'll need to deal with such situations in a much more organized man¬ ner. In the city itself, the police held them¬ selves back entirely, and up until the po¬ lice praesidium, there might as well not have been a pig in sight. The demo was astonishingly large (15,000-20,000 people) surprising us because no one had figured on so many people. The revolu¬ tionary bloc was made up of about 4000 of us, almost all masked and equipped with helmets and various assundry equipment. An enormous number of people from other political spectrums were there along with many citizens of Gottingen. This shows that many others also effected by the murder of Conny, which took place by the pigs after a militant self-defense action against fascist skinheads. This is a change, while often the reactions gener¬ ated by such events occur only from us (the militant resistance). Especially im¬ pressive was that during the long stretch to the place where Conny was killed the demo remained silent, as the expression of mourning. After the place had been passed, a shout of "Fire and flames for the

OHIO PRISONERS DEMAND AND END TO TORTURE Three prisoners in the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF) are staging a hunger strike which they started Febru¬ ary 14th. The hunger strike centers around the well-documented beatings, harassment and torture received by pris¬ oners in the J1 control unit in SOCF. The group, John Perotti, Micheal Day and Sudan Swafford have put together a list of 12 demands which are summed up in the following letter received from John Perotti: Dear Comrades, I hope that you’ve all had a happy holiday. 1990 marks the 200 year history of the prisons in Amerikkka. As such, we have deiced to start the year off right. I am writing this from the Boycar sensory deprivation cell, where my captors put me before Christmas so I could appreciate the accommodations. Due to the increased repression here, murders and beatings of our comrades by guards, the fact that the control unit remains open and we are subjected to long-term isolation, and the recent recent railroad done on me, amongst other le¬ gitimate reasons, we have decided to repeat the actions of our IRA comrades in H Block. Since armed revolution is un¬ feasible in this section of the prison, we have decided to use a non-violent form of resistance, putting only our lives on the line. Starting February 14th, 1990, my¬ self, Sudun Swafford and Micheal Day the only prisoners in the Control Unit - will begin a death fast. Once we spread the word, others will join in. I am writing to you to spread the word. As you may know, death fasts are not ef¬ fective without a broad base of outside support. Without that the prisoncrats will allow us to die without anyone knowing the cause or reasons or without pressure being applied on them by publicity, letters and telegrams of protest, news media and airplay publicizing our fast, and daily phone calls to the Warden and Director checking on our physical and mental well-being and demanding our conditions be met. We are in the process of drafting
a formal communique which will follow, but our main demands are: 1. ) Transfers out of the state. 2. ) Shut down of the Control Unit (J1 SuperMax). 3. ) Stop Unit Management and Behavior Modifications. 4. ) Allow isolation prisoners all their per¬ sonal property, literature and contact visits with family.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP: | Send letters of support and detail of pro¬ test actions to:
Industrial Workersof the World (IWW) General Defense Committee #1 P.O. Box 26381 Trotwood, OH 45426 U.S.A. Or phone: Linda Leisure (614) 864-2684
5. ) Stop routing beatings, macings, firehosings of prisoners by guards.
Send letters / telegrams of protest and phone:
6. ) Prosecute all guards who beat and murder prisoners, just as we are prosecuted.
Warden Terry L. Morris, Southern Ohio Correctional Facility P.O. Box 45699 Lucasville, OH 45699-0001 (614) 259-5544
7. ) Provide adequate medical treatment. 8. ) Provide due process in placement and release from isolation. 9. ) Elevate the Pay Scale - a fair day's wage for a fair day's labor. 10. ) Abolish the Death Penalty. 11. ) Lower the periods of incarceration / sentencing laws. 12. ) Formulate a group of private, unbi¬ ased citizens to monitor human rights violations in the prisons These are just some of our demands. If you will support us, please circulate this letter and contact our local outside networkers whose names are listed below. It is a time for change, time to pres¬ sure the prisoncrats, hopefully others will follow our lead. It's time to tear down the walls! All of our comrades here send their revolutionary respects to all of you. Do not let us die in vain. In Solidarity, John Perotti.

Anarchist Gathering for the Pacific Northwest Region
Vancouver, Canada From January 26-29,1990 a regional anarchist gathering was held in Vancou¬ ver, Canada. Over 200 people attended throughout the weekend, with about 80 coming from out of town. The region consists of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon state, a natural region that ignores the national boundaries of the U.S. and Canada. The first night was a reception for outof-towners, billeting people, issuing schedules, etc. The following two days consisted of discussions, presentations and socializing, taking place at the Native Education Centre which had been rented for the weekend. Everything was free, including food and child cate. Approximately 28 workshops were held, many aimed at the local struggles for the region; the Gitksan-Wet'suwet’en and native struggles, prostitutes and other women for equal rights, squatting and combatting gentrification, tactics at demos, and in anti-imperialism, etc. Be¬ cause of the smaller size of the regional gathering, as opposed to the much larger continental gatherings, most of the ses¬ sions went fairly smoothly and people generally felt they gained something, the informal and relaxed atmosphere gener¬ ated a more social feeling, and the media and police presence so obvious in Toronto ’88 didn’t appear. Security was stressed, with sugges¬ tions not to talk on specific actions, or to liberally your name and address to every¬ one. It was especially important consider¬ ing the increasing surveillance and infil¬ tration by various security agencies who have made contact at past gatherings (Mary Lou Sapone in Toronto and the FBI at an Earth First! gathering). Given the diversity of perspectives in the anarchist movement, gatherings can be little more than a space for people to make contact with the movement. It is clear that, at this stage, gatherings are fairly limited in what they can achieve. Because of this it was stressed that more concrete and practical outcomes were hoped for. For this, a last day closing session was scheduled to present any conclusions reached and any other out¬ comes. In Vancouver, a monthly coffee¬ house was initiated to provide a regular meeting space, and a wimmins gathering was tentatively proposed to be held in Seattle. From the International Solidarity

discussion a gathering focusing on anti¬ imperialism was discussed but no imme¬ diate plans were made. It was on the whole a very successful gathering, with discussions presented, to varying degrees, as a part of a revolution¬ ary struggle. Still, there seemed to be lacking a revolutionary focus, an exten¬ sion of the various social struggles such as ecological, anti-patriarchal, anti-ra¬ cism to an attack on capitalism, there is a tendency for most anarchists to concen¬ trate on building cultural alternatives ratherthan building aculturethat is based on resistance. A militant action wasn't planned because of the short time in¬ volved and the situation. So, because of the old slogan "talk-action=zero" has always been an important part of anar¬ chism, $200 out of the donations re¬ ceived was given to the GitksanWet'suwet’en and their land title action. Time will tell if the community and ini¬ tiative that have so far emerged from the gathering will last. But there are always positive steps and we must keep in mind that we are always growing and develop¬ ing, not only as a revolutionary move¬ ment, but as people. Anarchist gatherings and confer¬ ences should be viewed as a small part in the development of a revolutionary movement. At this point they are obvi¬ ously diverse and unfocused, a natural occurrence considering the lack of inten¬ sity and presence of the North America radical movements. Geographic regions should build on the momentum of such gatherings, but keeping in mind that they are a part of a process, not an end to themselves. Anarchist Media Raided MILAN - Italian police have raided the homes of anarchists in various towns on December 5th, 1989, particularly of those involved in producing the papers ProvocAzione and Anarchismo, seizing a large part of the material planned for the next issues along with subscription lists. The papers have vowed to continue publish¬ ing information which the state is trying to suppress. (Milan editorial group of ProvocAzione / Via Toronto Echomedia)
"Solidarity With the People of El Salvador- Attack on Unisys in Copenhagen The night before December 4, 1989 we attacked the Danish headquarters of Unisys, at Blegdamsvej in Copenhagen. We have painted, smashed windows and thrown stinking acid into the offices, to disrupt their work and to show the future they deserve. In this way we show our solidarity with the fighting people of El Salvador. Unisys is one of the biggest mulitnational computerfirms and a big supplier to the U.S. Army. Unisys has among other things, developed and produced ad¬ vanced computer systems used in the big Trident submarines and in the nuclear Pershing and Cruise Missiles. Besides the military jobs, Unisys par¬ ticipates world wide in creating an alien¬ ated and computerized society, where people and life doesn't count at all. OHIO SEVEN BEATRAP The Ohio 7, seven white, working class revolutionaries, were arrested in Ohio in a massive police operation earlier this decade. They were charged with the actions of the United Freedom Front, an armed group that carried out actions against the property of the U.S. Govern¬ ment and corporations involved in acts of war against Third World countries and peoples. Although they were convicted of these actions, which they support but didn’t claim as their own, they were in¬ dicted still on charges of seditious con¬ spiracy and RICO, which is an anti-rack¬ eteering law brought in to deal with or¬ ganized crime. These charges were being used to make political organizing a crime, and make an example of the Ohio 7 by putting even more years on their already long sentences. However, this didn't work. Congratu¬ lations are due to the three members of the Ohio 7 who were being tried in Springhill, MA., they beat the rap. The jury found them not guilty of conspiring to overthrow the U.S. government by force, and on the RICO charge there was a hung jury. The U.S. government has spentthree years and close to 10 million dollars to get guilty verdicts in this case, and they must be hurting now. On December first they announced they had no intention of ap¬ pealing the verdict. No shock, really - all but one of the 7 are already serving lengthy prison terms; a guilty verdict would have been merely icing on the government's cake. Now that the verdicts are in, Patricia Gros Levasseur is free to go, her hus¬ band Raymond Luc Levasseur can begin serving his sentence, and Richard Wil¬ liams will now face another trial for cop killing. For those of us on the outside, our efforts can now be directed to seeing that some sort of verdict comes down in the Resistance Conspiracy Case, which will reported on in later issues (Toronto

"WE ARE WINNING” Poll Tax Resistance Update Scotland Six months into the poll tax and 650,00 people in Scotland have made no payments whatsoever. In addition to this an estimated half a million others are two or more moths in arrears - giving a com¬ bined non-payers / in arrears total of over 25%. Lothian Regional Council state that by the end of September 96,000 final no¬ tices have been sent to to Lothian’s non¬ payers. With an estimated additional 20,000 - 30,000 non-payers on rebates yet to be sent final notices, that means that 20% of those registered haven’t payed a penny! Plus thousand of people who aren't even registered, an extra 79,000 people are three or more months in arrears giving a staggering non-payers / in arrears total of 35%. In Strathclyde 236,000 final notices to non-payers were sent out in late October, another 300,000 people were in arrears, but were still to be sent reminders as their bills needed adjusting. So over half a mil¬ lion people in Scotland's biggest Region, around a third of those registered, either haven’t paid or are in arrears.
Actions against Councils are keeping the councillors in the public light - most councils in Scotland are controlled by the ’’socialist’’ Labour Party, who are threat¬ ening non-payer with the slogan "pay up and shut up". All over Scotland actions are increasing in intensity and regularity. Actions have included, but are not limited to, demonstrations to the stopping of a poinding of property by sheriff officers, occupations of Poll Tax payment offices and sheriff offices and the occupations of regional Council buildings themselves. In England and Wales resistance to registration is continuing. In Armly, Leeds, a testing ground for Poll Tax snoopers was laid out to see how long it would take to canvass an area for regis¬ tration. The snoopers knocked on 50 doors and got three replies. Needless to say the plan was scrapped - registration would have taken seven years in this way! In late October hundreds of DSS workers in London walked out in protest when asked to snoop on claimants and register them for the poll tax. From Counter Information

&
Soviet Union An anarcho-syndicalist federation has been organized in the Soviet Union, with about 50 people from various cities at¬ tending last January's founding meeting in Moscow. The small but energetic group plans to republish the paper Golos Truda (The Voice of Labour), destroyed by the Bolsheviks after the revolution, and to hold celebrations in honor of Makhno and Bakunin. (Makhno was known for his army of peasants who fought both the reactionary white armies and the new Bolshevik regime, freeing villages and setting up real workers self¬ management in their path. The Ukranian movement was double-crossed and destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1921) Makhno was also the subject of a favo¬ rable article in a major Soviet l-iterary review, and Soviet officials officials are planning celebrations for Kropotkin's
150th birthday in 1992, indicating a pos¬ sible re-examination of the anarchist movement in the U.S.S.R. Another group affiliated with the KAS (Confederation of Anarcho-Syndicalists) is resuming publication of the paper Nai* bat (alarm) which was crushed by the Bol¬ sheviks 69 years ago.
Czechoslovakia As well as in the Soviet Union, Czecho¬ slovakia has just seen it's first open anar¬ chist organization in many years. In a founding statement the CAS (Ceskoslovenske Anarchisticke Sdruzeni) stated that it is a free and open union of those who have chosen the anarchist move¬ ment and are working towards a free society based on working on the basis of free association, with an anarchist soci¬ ety as the ultimate goal. ALL LETTERS WELCOMED! Hello, Just dropping a line to inform you of a slight mistake in your article "Revolt Against Communism" in Profane Existence #2. You state that "a spontaneous and popular revolt overthrew the Tsar in Russia": this is not entirely correct from a strict historical prospective. In 1917 Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate, ending the monarchy and a provisional government was formed, but because of its ephemeral nature, refused to make any real decisions. By fall of the same year Kerensky, himself a socialist, became head of the provisional government, though he was subsequently toppled by the Bolshevik Revolution on October 25/26 (old style) / November 7/8 (new style). In the early days of this period Lenin nationalized the means of production and abolished private property, and in November 1917 called for free elections to choose the constitutional assembly. But the Bolsheviks did very poorly in this election, so Lenin chose to disband the assembly rather than submit to its decision. Apart from this discrepancy, your article was very much to the point and welcomed since we need to get our facts straight about the history of Marxism-Leninism in order to better pick it apart for what it represents - the state as coercion. Yours in the black flag, Greg Wise, Dayton Anarchist Collec¬ tive. All correspondence to DAC / P.O. Box 3316 / Dayton, OH Profane Existence, Writing in regard to our (VEGAN REICH'S) interview in M.A.S. #8 and Pat & Trolls comments in P.E. #2 about being "ignorant...sexist, homophobic, intolerant," etc. As to the sexist allegation -1 take it that in regards to the list of "favorite things" where we listed some actresses, models & various other women, etc. I thought it would be painfully obvious that we were joking (when the first choice of both the "favorite" and "unfavorite" lists was girls and then talking about non¬ leather bondage & hating virgins, etc -1 mean who could take this seriously?) an in fact, I don't see how we could have expected to seriously with such a ridiculous, irrelevant question as "what are your favorite things?" However, it’s obvious you did take it seriously, so, even though I don’t see any problems with us joking around in such a manner, I will now state my opinions on sexism as to state my positions as such as to clear up any misunderstandings which may have resulted from that inter¬ view. I consider women to be completely equal to men, both in the struggle & in relationships, etc. However, I do not think we are the same. So if all you feminists who seek to negate pre-set natural roles & destroy the family structure (as capitalism and communism have done) think that still classifies me as sexist, then so be it. I know that by thought & deed I stand for complete equality of the sexes, and that's all that matters. Concerning homophobia...That word implies fear of homo¬ sexuality - usually a fear of oneself, which then gets focused on others, etc. This has nothing to do with our stance on the issue. Fear doesn’t enter the picture, from a natural & moral outlook on life, homosexuality can be seen as nothing but a deviation from nature. And like all other deviations from nature, which have brought our world to the dreadful state it is in today, it must be spoken out against and combatted. As far as being intolerant?, Yes, I will not tolerate the murder of animals & destruction of our Earth, just as you would not tolerate the murder of your family & destruction of your home. To suggest that I am fascist (as pat did) because I extend the "rights" to those beyond the human species & will not tolerate to deny them the right to kill and torture, etc. and, obviously, as
stupid as you may be, you haven't yet sunken to that level of absurdity. Regarding my "extreme feelings" (which, by the way, are shared by other vegans out there & through out the world), yeah, I have ’em. I believe in such of the top radically violent ideas such as not forcing the third world to live in hunger because we make them grow cash crops to satisfy our vices ( such as coffee, cocaine, & pot etc. not to mention beef production). I believe in the oppressive doctrine of equal rights and liberty for animals, being such a fascist scum to suggest they live their lives free of our control, manipulation and murder. Oh, and of course, the total psychopathic vision of a society which is not governed by greed & perversion. Where women can walk the streets without fear of rape, where children are not sold drugs at their schools, nor molested by their twisted parents. Yeah, I'm so "extreme"for believing in absolute right and wrong, and having some fundamental morals shared by rational de¬ scent human beings. Get a grip on reality. Ignorance means lacking of knowledge or experience, or being uniformed, etc. How does that really apply to me? After nine years of being involved in the punk / Anarchist / animal liberation movements there isn't anything in the social / political realm I haven't studied, or couldn't intelligently argue with you on and needless to say, during that time, not to mention the rest of my life, I've experienced a lot first hand, so there goes your ac¬ cusation of ignorance. If you want to call me an asshole or something, that's fine but next time you want to use any other descriptive word, try knowing what it means first & when it applies. Sean / Vegan Reich / P.O. Box 490 / Laguna Beach, CA 92652 / U.S.A.
Sean, let us not mistake anything here; "We do believe in Anar¬ chism as an ultimate goal, but realize that at this point in time too many humans in this world are weak and unable to resist hedonism. Thus Anarchism could not function at this stage in history - at least in most of thq world. The first step would be a dictatorship by vegans who would help speed up the natural evolution process by re-educating those who can be, and weeding out those beyond help. After this has occurred and the human race is drastically reduced in population..." This is what was stated in the M.A.S. interview. Add that to a name like VEGAN REICH and it's pretty plain to see where the term fascist may come into use. Of course, it is only a matter of semantics on how these can apply - taken out of context, whatever, which may also be said about the "sexist" charge. As far as homophobic, it may not be a blatant fear of homo¬ sexuals you have, but you are painfully misled by saying it is a "deviation from nature" That, I will argue is totally false. We cannot find anything to support your statement further than assumptions, while it is not uncommon for animals in nature to not differentiate gender preference in instinctual sexual acts, barring it is not in contradiction of other instinctual traits such as territories, etc. Also, even if homosexuality deviatiates from sexual norms, said sexual preference does not constitute ab¬ normal behavior. As far as being morally wrong, let us remind you that it was on the pretext of moraljudgement such atrocities as the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials were allowed to happen. We also seem to find your definition of ignorance as quite

you seem ignorant in your ability to coherently use it. We could say that a dictionary has an immense amount of information, but without proper use it is nothing but an inanimate object. As a closing comment, we would just like to add that we find your intolerance abhorrent. It is imperative to be self-aware in order to initiate any positive change, personal revelation may not always translate into the betterment of all people. We have to work together if we really want to change things, not form exclusionary ideals. Editorial Crew P.S. Apparently Pat received a similar letter from Sean andsubmitted the following as a reply... Dear Sean, I never took your interview in M.A.S. #8 totally serious, but most of it I did. and your letter in MRR #79 confirmed that which I thought and took to be serious. I say you’re a fascist because you want to cram your ideals down everyone's throat (literally). Remember being asked whether or not you thought everyone should quit eating meat (M.A.S. #8)? And replying Mwe don't care if they "should" THEY WILL!" That and other statements throughout your interview and letter in MRR #79 led me to believe you're a fascist. Fascism isn’t always nationalistic and racist. It also can pertain to a dictatorial person, that is one who is inclined to dictate or command; imperious; overbearing. That's you fucker! As far as your intolerance, I meant towards others, not the animal rights thing. You say you will not tolerate homosexuals, drug users and meat eaters - that makes you intolerant. Homo¬ phobia is fear of homosexuals and that fear usually results in violence towards those who are gay or "thought to be" gay. That says a lot about you dude. Might I add if homosexuality, bisexuality (or whatever you want to categorize it as) were a choice, then nobody would be gay. So don’t give me that "lack of self-discipline" bullshit. The sexist part is quite obvious. You hint towards "feminists (being) out to negate pre-set natural roles." What exactly are pre-set natural roles? Child-rearing and housework?! The igno¬ rance part is obvious also; everything you spout is ignorant. So I know leave you asshole with a few descriptive words that I know the meaning of and that applies to fascist, homophobic, intolerant assholes like you. So long dude. Yours in humanity, Pat / P.O. Box 33263 / Minneapolis, MN / 55433 P.S. my sincerest apologies to the P.E. staff for wasting time, paper and space arguing about this jerk. Dear Profane Existence, Loved the first issue! You guys have really got your shit together! It's unfortunate that we cant straighten our act up here in NYC (but we're trying!) Just some comments on two things that bothered me...First of all, in the DESTROY! interview their comments on welfare seemed vaguely reminiscent of something I once heard AG¬ NOSTIC FRONT say. Their attitudes that "they have to work while other people sit at home and watch TV" seem extremely classist, and really got under my skin. Welfare is negative, but not for the reasons they say. Do they honestly believe that people enjoy welfare? Then I invite them and their hard-working friends to come stay overnight in a NYC welfare hotel, where they'll be mugged, raped and maybe even murdered. Welfare is a TOOL the system uses to crush criticism. After all, how can you
complain about the government if it's paying you to stay lazy? Welfare is degrading and it keeps you poor, so their mythical ideas that people are living well of their hard work are just untrue. Also, would DESTROY! criticize squatters who live without rent, while they work their asses off? And what about the myriad of U.K. punks on the dole? Are they lazy bums? In 1989,60% of the Federal budget went to current and past military debts (60% = 528 billion bucks) while 21% went to human resources (of about 1-3% went to welfare services). Now which of these two are stealing your money more? By attacking the poor on welfare you don't solve the problem, you only isolate a group of potential sympathizers. Besides, if one believes in Anarchy, isn't it hypocritical to pay taxes to the government? And in an Anarchist society, what would become of pregnant mothers, paraplegics, mentally disabled, etc? Would they be ignored because they might take some of your oh-so-hardearned money? Not everyone has the privileges of education and a good homethat middle class, white punks have had. There is increas¬ ing unemployment in the U.S., while the majority of the jobs are low income, boring and tedious (flipping burgers at McDeath's for instance). The comment that people are responsible for their own lives is bullshit! Why do DESTROY! think that so many people are living in ghettos? Because they want to? No, be¬ cause the system has raped the working class of this country of almost all revolutionary vitality, so they see no alternative (and you wonder why drug use is up!) The fact is that WE DON’T MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES IN LIFE, as anything that is a threat is crushed. That is precisely the reason most of us are revolutionaries.... On a different note, is Rev. John going to become the P.E. answer to Mykel Board? That hunting deal was too much...How can someone who claims to be for liberation support the needless slaughter of animals? I hope he chokes on one of those delicious dear hearts!!! Justice, D@n Tran. P.S. In issue #2 (NY SCENE REPORT), Alicia gave the wrong P.O. Box for NYDAC.^The correct one is: NYDAC / INSURGENCE / P.O. Box 365 / Canal St. Station / New York, NY 10013 Dear Profane Existence, this letter is essentially in response to Felix and R@t's article against communism last issue. This isn't directed at them per¬ sonally, but I think the issues they raised are important and, because they have been raised, I think it's a good time to take a look at them. I don't feel everyone is guilty of what I say, nor do I agree with communist hierarchy. This is about our tenden¬ cies in the movement to attack each other. I think this in fighting occurs because we are frustrated in our attacks on the state. The same thing happens in South Africa with necklacing and in Palestine against supposed informers. Friends die by our own hands more often than at the hands of our true enemies, this misdirected aggression, and this illusion of purifying and of progress through purging will only hurt in the end. However, I'm getting ahead of myself. What I want to talk about first is communism and the lies everyone keeps perpetu¬ ating., whether they are anarchists, fascists, or supposedly communists themselves. I don't intend to act as an apologist for the Reds, but I think we need to put some things in perspective. Perhaps it's just semantics, but I don't conceive of post-1917 Russia as communist anymore than I would call post 1776
ALL LETTERS WELCOMEDI¥9 Amerikka democratic. Yet Amerikka and the West call Russia communist, thereby condemning all true communists, socialists (and even anarchists) for things they are not. It seems, Felix and R@t, that you have bought into this false labeling. Communism is, at first, a dictatorship of the proletariat. The only thing Russia has seen since 1917 is a dictatorship of the Communist Party They are not the same thing!! Also, the culmination of commu¬ nism is at its purest a withering away of the state and a dissolution into workers' communes. Naturally, this has not happened in Russia or any other so-called "communist" coun¬ try. So why do you persist in labeling them as such? All you do by this is to cast aspersion on true communism, from which anarchism springs. These supposed "communist" countries are assuredly anything but! So what are they? These East-Bloc countries are (were?) all one-party state socialist, serving a national program. The U.S.S.R., for example, is not pro-communist but pro-Russian. Communist treachery in Republican Spain stems from the CPSU’s subservience to Stalin’s pro-Russian interests. Every¬ thing done by the commies in Spain was engendered by Russian motives. Consider the Republican gold reserves trans¬ ferred to Moscow banks. Russian banks, not Spanish Commu¬ nist Party funds. Or how about the attacks on POUM, a commu¬ nist party, but the party of Stalin’s enemy Trotsky. These things have no basis in communism but a lot to do with Russian nationalism. Even in Hungary in ’56, the invasion was cloaked in Marxist rhetoric but was done in the name of Russian nationalism. The Hungarian workers who rebelled on Csepel Island were a lot closer to communism than the Soviet troops who shot them down. Russia has long since ceased to be even remotely communist. Her leaders learned 1941 that the people would not defend communism against the Nazis. They would, however, defend her in the name of Mother Russia. The Eastern Front in WWII was not a showdown between communism and fascism, but a conflict between German nationalism and Russian nation¬ alism. Politically, Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany are the same!! Both countries are ruled by one man who is head of the state and head of the party. Both countries allow only one party in "elections". Both countries are expansionary, both are statesocialist, both use national imagery, both have prison camps, and both are racist. What you, and what the West are wrongly calling communism is actually totalitarianism. Enough of the history lesson. Now that I've defined my terms, what do I really want to say? I want to point out how critical we are of ourselves and of our potential allies. We, as a movement, are small, extremely small. We are growing and we can continue to grow, but we can’t afford to lightly alienate everybody else and each-other or our growth will halt, we will fragment and (if this is possible) become even more ineffective. I know some of you out there trip your gag reflex on the words "popular front" but please listen. We dfi need to work with other people who don't believe exactly as we do. Before you cry "cooption" hear me out. Nobody believes exactly the same thing in the same way as somebody else. We are all humyn and all unique. It is impossible to believe identically. Every single time we don something, or interact with someone else, we compro¬ mise our egos to some extent. This is unavoidable. The main thing is to keep this compromise at a reasonable level. Also, this
compromise must be voluntary and it must be kept in perspec¬ tive. Our goal is not to be more pure than anyone else, more "politically correct". Our goal is to make the world a better place to live in. We do, it is true, believe that the world must be better organized in a radically different way for things to be better. However, none of us has the an absolute monopoly on truth. I think we've got to remember that. To a large extent, we bounce our ideas and our arguments off of allies, people already half-convinced. We don’t confront the public a lot with what we believe. Consequently, a lot of our disagreements are with each-other. I think we’ve got to stop this. Sure, we're going to disagree, but lets not get worked up about it that we forget what we have in common. We’ve got to focus on our real enemies and stop criticizing each-other. Who do you have more in common with; communists or republicans? I think the answer is obvious, it’s the communists. You don’t serve any purpose by bitching about the RCP all the time, you only confuse and divide purpose by bitching about the RCP all the time, you only confuse and divide the people in the anti-establishment camp and weaken everybody involved. I read last month in the paper about protestors against El Salvador splashing blood on the walls of an office somewhere. Crazily enough my first thought was not one of congratulation, but condemnation. "How dare they buy blood from a slaughter¬ house to use in their demo!" On reflection, my initial thought missed the point, the point was not that they used animal blood, which I felt was wrong, but that they made a statement about El Salvador. I don't agree with their use of blood, but I think the proper perspective requires focusing attention on the intent of the protest and not charging the protestors with animal exploi¬ tation. I don't think we should gloss over what defects we see in other groups, but to simply bash socialists or communists for something to do only serves to strengthen the position of the state. In fighting and fanatical puritanism has hurt our movement more than anything else. I've said this before and I'll say it now. We should explain to and attempt to educate those people in our movement who we feel are doing something wrong, we should not simply criticize them and scream at them, yet, this all to often happens and radical movements tear themselves apart, doing more damage to each other than to the government. Stop and remember; we still have more in common with each other than we do with the state, constructive criticism is appropriate, but please save the hate for the real enemy. Emphasize our similarities, not our differences. As for working with other groups, I think we should all do what we feel comfortable with. Myself, I think we work with other groups if we are careful about how we work with them and to what extent. If possible, I think we should work alongside other groups, as a separate anarchist contingent. This has been done recently with fair success. This is also the safest way to keep control of yourselves. Also, remember that the liberal and leftwing groups are voluntary. If people are willing to belong to them, it means they are willing to accept hierarchy and centrali¬ zation. These people have chosen a formal structure. Try and explain to them why you feel such structure is unnecessary, but don';t just call them fascists and tell them to fuck off. When you come into contact with other groups around a single issue, it means you are working for the same thing, just in different ways. So, if you think it's worth joining a formal group to accomplish

something, go ahead, it's your decision. If not, you can organize your own group and work along side. Not beneath, but next to. For example, I'm for abortion rights and Pm also an anar¬ chist. But at this point in time, I don’t think an exclusively anarchist pro-choice group is feasible or has a snowball’s chance in hell of influencing anything. So right now Pm willing to sign petitions for Planned Parenthood, or write a protest letter to a government official as part of a NOW campaign. But, I don’t pay dues to these organizations, I don’t take orders from them, and I won’t. I'm working along side them as a partner because I feel that they have the best chance of keeping abortions legal in this country. That doesn’t mean I’ve sold out or that I agree with everything they say, or that Pm even committed to them next week. Now, let me bring up my second point about working with the left or liberal groups. Don’t be limited by them. Just because you work on the same issue doesn’t mean you must limit yourself to their program. You can go beyond them and keep working where they left off. If you help Greenpeace campaign against factory pollution, and if Greenpeace gets it stopped, that doesn’t mean you have to quit. You can go on to call for an end to the factories themselves, etc. What this all boils down to is a balancing act. You have to balance what gains you think can be made in a positive direction against what you may temporarily have to give up by way of autonomy or absolute stands. It's the fundamental question of real versus ideal. You have to decide for yourself where to draw the line between cooperation and co-option, between protest and legitimation. But if you keep working for what you believe in, remain reserved in criticism yet not delusioned by other groups and keep pushing forward, not limiting yourself to others’ pro¬ grams, you can eventually achieve your goal. This is not selling out, co-option, counter revolution or reactionary brain-washing, and anyone who says that is just an ineffectual elitist who would rather sit in a corner and whine at his potential allies than actually go out and attack the real enemy on his own, which is our oppressive government. As the M.A.S. picnic flyer said, "put aside your petty little differences”. As a movement, we can forge cohesion through understanding and education. Bickering and back-stabbing is truly petty. We don’t have room for it, it is beneath us. When and if we accomplish a revolution there will be plenty of time and enough of a power vacuum for us to beat the shit out eachothers' deviants skill to our elitist little hearts’ delight. IMPULSE 1990 FELIX RESPONDS AFTER NEXT LETTER A response to the neo-malthusian concept of sterilization presented in P.E. #1 in Felix's column: To reduce the vast con¬ ditions of despair now gripping the people in the Three conti¬ nents, and the ecological destruction now occurring all over the world, to a situation that requires people to sterilize themselves, is to ignore how these conditions developed. There are some al¬ lusions in the article that "over population" is the main problem, produced by social and economic imperialism the Third World is subjected to. Malthusian arithmetics, which argues that there is a "natural law" at work when millions of people are deprived of the basics of their subsistence, has always been totally oblivious and ignorant to economic, political and social condi¬ tions. It was an excuse for explaining away the poor in Malthus'
:ime and it is still an excuse today. Rather than looking at a society were wealth is unequally distributed, where capital spends billions on superfluous products such as machines for war, where the capitalists have to create a demand for a product, and where a world economic system creates hunger because it is an integral part of its method of continuing exploitation, those who advocate the Malthusian formula fix the blame for hunger, etc. on the hungry themselves! One should be wary of using the concept of such a reactionary as Mr Malthus, a man who opposed attempts to alleviate poverty because it would remove the limits imposed on "population growth" by prolong the lives of the poor! It's for sure rather confusing when Felix shows glimpses of why there is wide-spread misery, and why the most exploited will produce more children as a means of survival, than goes on to advocate the Malthusian principle of "over-population" and suggests sterilization! Somewhere along the line obvious con¬ nections have been missed. Sterilization has, for years, been implemented in the Three continents. Millions of women have been forcibly sterilized. Forced sterilization is not just physical, but comes in economic forms too. Bribery in the form of a few dollars or a sack of rice. Unclear and misunderstood medical forms. Sterilization Has been used as a form of population control against Palestinians, black South Africans, mentally retarded and physically disabled, and against subversives. It is a weapon used by capital against those who can’t, or don’t, fit into the productive process. In India women are offered 125 rupees to be sterilized. For the poor this is quite an incentive! States compete for the highest number of sterilizations in the shortest period of time. Gene technology is increasingly being applied to the "over-population" problem. Already new injections are being produced that sterilize women. The capitalist centers see in this new technology profits by a way of sales to the exploited countries, a living laboratory to test or dump new or defective products, and above all as a means of control unrest produced by imperialist plunder. All over the world womem are fighting for their reproductive rights and for self-determination. Advising people to adopt a child rather than birth one isn’t going to solve the contradictions, and rather than being a solution, is ignoring the fact that creating a child is a natural motivation. There is no such thing as "over-population"! But imperialism does exist, as revolutionaries we should be attacking the causes of misery not producing lop-sided and not very well thought-out "solutions". Not wanting to pick on Felix too much, but some comments on the "Revolt Against Communism" article in P.E. #2. The gen¬ eralized use of the term "communist" without making distinc¬ tions as to the very diverse currents which all call themselves "communist" is to arrive at a neo-McCarthyism. All communists are not all supportive of the U.S.S.R. and there are Marxists who are vehemently opposed to Bolshevism, national liberation struggles, etc. Stalinism is the totalitarian form of "state social¬ ism" so evident today in the East Bloc. In Spain the Marxist POUM (who more or less sided with the anarchists) was also a victim of the Stalinists and they too were shot, along with the anarchists. Putting anarchists such as Bakunin, Kropotkin and Prodhoun on a lofty pedestal tends to blur one's eyes. Like Marx or Engles, they were also bourgeois aristocrats turned revolu¬ tionaries, and the whole lot of them were sexist and racist! The
ALL LETTERS WELCOMED! "popular front" is actually Trotsky’s "United Front”. For us "dupes" who do consider who do consider themselves part of the radical left movement, it's clear that there are distinctions between groups who callthemselves communist (i.e. they’re not all blood-thirsty, power mongering zealots), and those who label themselves "Anarchist" aren’t always pure in thought or deed. Congratulations on a great 'zine, keep it up! A comrade at Endless Struggle Felix Responds. I'm glad to see that my articles and opinions have stimulated some thoughts and debate in our movement, this process of debate and criticism is important , and should be kept on a comradely level, we need to examine each other's ideas, but must avoid factionalism over fine points of theory. As DOOM has said "agree to differ". First I’ll respond to the letter from Endless Struggle. I truly believe that our planet as an ecosystem is overpopulated, we are consuming irreplaceable resources at an alarming rate. I agree that wealth is inequality distributed and that capitalists often blame the poor for a fate that is the result of the capitalist system, not necessarily their birth rate. I still truly believe that there are too many people, and the population growth must be stopped as one step in the process of attaining greater distribution of the world's rapidly depleting resources. I advocate sterilization as a form of birth control, not political control. I don't believe that third world populations are intention¬ ally controlled for some diabolical capitalist purpose. I think most sterilization and birth control programs are conducted in the third world to benefit those countries people. Whetherthis works remains to be seen. Perhaps some countries have used such procedures against oppressed ethnic minorities, but I don't think the capitalist schemers have masterminded a global plot to control unrest through sterilization. Most right wing capitalist opinions I read favor unchecked population growth as a source of cheap labor, and a market for their products. I don’t necessar¬ ily agree with Malthus’theories, I hardly know anything aboutthe guy, his is just the best known illustration of the problem I was addressing. I still think there is such a thing as overpopulation, and of course \ agree that capitalism is the bigger evil, but even in an anarchist society on a global scale I think there are too many people to keep us from destroying our ecosystem. And nowto deal with both of your comments about the article Rat and I wrote about communism. It was a joint effort so I must say these are my opinions, I don’t know how Ratfeels. I truly feel that all Marxists, Communists whatever share the same fundamen¬ tal assumptions and are at odds with anarchism for this reason. Marxists propose to overthrow one system and replace it with another while maintaining the domination of one human being by another. And that is where the problem arises. Power corrupts, the most dedicated and selfless revolutionaries can become the most oppressive tyrants once given the reigns of power. Jon, I think you have trouble discerning between the sustaining myths of communism and the reality of it's implemen¬ tation. The withering of the state outlined in "State and Revolu¬ tion" by Lenin is propaganda, a myth, just like "We find these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal...” and so on. Perhaps the revolutionaries of 1776 and 1917 believed these words, but history shows that governments only grow larger, and more intrusive as the thousands of petty bureaucrats and officials try to gain more power and wealth. This is where all
11
attempts to impose a dictatorship otthe proletariat will fail. Once in power the dictatorship will only grow, the new rulers will become acclimated to their new positions, and will not willingly relinquish power. I’m not going to disagree about nationalism and foreign policy. However, if Spain had come to be governed by POUM would they be any more tolerant of the anarchists once in power than the Stalinist communists? Well to be perfectly pigheaded, Jon, I do think we have about as close a monopoly on truth as you can get and that an anarchist analysis, and program is the only way to achieve the utopia we all desire. I don’t think we need to work with communist groups, in fact I think to do so may weaken our movement. Communism around the world is discredited and hardly a week goes by without a country throwing the bums out. Communism is down for the count, in all it’s varieties, Marx's ideas have been tried and failed. One down, one to go. Anarchism is the only way to really guar¬ antee freedom and equality to all, we must direct our attacks at the ascendent capitalist system as always. I’m not trying to detract from this task, just to raise some points about our practices in this undertaking. My goal is not bickering and back stabbing but self criticism and debate, this is the only way to form and evolve opinions. In some areas my opinion has changed since the article was written (right after the massacre in Beijing) as a result of conversations with a RABL member and your letters, I understand your opinions and to some extent, agree with them. However, I prefer to remain a "purist" and I think our criticisms of communism, Marxism or any other variant form of "left wing" statism should be as thorough and vehement as our critique of "right wing" statism. Why form an alliance with statist groups? In some cases such as the war against the counter revolution in Spain and Russia, this alliance was thought to be necessary. Indeed even in Spain and Russia the alliance did us more harm than good. There is enough historical precedent to discourage any collaboration. But, if we want to be heard on some issues we must work along side these groups. This may be a difficult choice to make and we must always be on the guard against co-option. Jon I agree with your opinion on working along side rather than under authoritarian groups over some issues, but the nature of these organizations makes it extremely difficult to avoid co-option, or merely having your numbers used to support claims you don’t back. For instance, going to a demonstration where someone with a megaphone says "we are here to support the FMLN" when you merely came to oppose U.S. aid to El Salvador, not solidarity with the FMLN. We can choose to work along side these groups, but we must keep in mind that they have a very different vision of the future than we do and that it is subject to corruption. As Rat and I pointed out communists talk a different line when they're not in power, but once in it's firing squads or Siberia for us. The only route to true freedom is the destruction of all authority, authority of the party, the dictatorship of the proletariat, etc. Government and authority must be overthrown and tossed into the dust heap of history if we are ever to enjoy true liberty. ..The anti-choice fools are over here in small numbers...Those people are so fucked with their right wing type Christian attitudes that is makes me wish that they'd bring back the sport of throwing Christians to the lions... Anonomous from the U.K. Due to extremely limited space, we do not have room to print all letters received. This does not meant they aren't appreciated

There seems to be two movements that are growing more popular with punks these days. One is the animal rights movement and the other is is the owner¬ ship, or caretaking of animals, a lot of people live with animals such as snakes, rats and rabbits. For some it's cats. But even more seem to be living with dogs. And I think that’s brilliant. Nothing makes me happierthan seeing a happy, healthy and loved animal. Unfortunately a lot of dogs aren’t so luck. Twenty five million homeless pets are born each year in the U.S. Fifteen million of those or donated to research annually. Eight to ten million who do not make the shelter die from a slower death from dis¬ ease, starvation, traps or cars. These are appalling numbers. These numbers exist not because no one wants pets, but because we have an overpopulation problem. And that’s because people breed indiscriminately for selfish rea¬ sons, or by accident. There is a simple solution to pet overpopulation, the sterili¬ zation of your dog or cat Far too many people still consider spay and neuter surgeries as unnatural, unnecessary or too expensive. Others relegate sterilization to ’’one of those days” which never seems to come along. Others still breed their dogs to that ’’cute little dog down the block” and they’ll tell you that they'll always find homes for the pups, well, for every puppy or kitten born, another will die in a shelter for the lack of a home. Others breed dogs that are popular to make money. By doing this they riddle the breed with undesirable traits and inher¬ ited physical ailments. Breeding is a complex thing that takes into effect domi¬ nant and recessive traits for generations, not just the dam and sire. Good breeders sell pups as pets because they may not meet breed standards and a good breeder will insist on a spay / neuter agreement. Unfortunately there aren’t many good, ethical breeders out there and maybe you got your friend out of the
COLUMNS paper from some one who had an acci¬ dental litter The cycle should stop with you. Besides the millions of animals with no home, besides the health of the pup or the breed standard. Many dogs suffer health or behavioral problems that spay¬ ing or neutering would have minimized, if not prevented entirely. Pyometra, or uterine abscess can occur between mating cycles. Bacteria develop within the uterus and pus is pro¬ duced and may be retained. Treatment is to spay the dog immediately. If left un¬ treated, the infectious process will poison the dog's system and she will die The onset of mammary tumors fre¬ quently follows a heat or false pregnancy. It may begin as a swelling or lumpiness in the breast often accompanied by a yel¬ lowish or milky discharge Half of all mammary tumors are cancerous. The only way to know if it's malignant is by surgery. If not removed in time the malig¬ nant tumors can spread to other parts of the body. Mammary tumors generally recur requiring repeated surgeries. If spaying occurs before a dog reaches one year, mammary tumors rarely, if ever, develop later in life. The formation of testicular tumors is relatively rare in dogs, but those that do crop up are usually malignant. A dog m ust be castrated i mmed iately to prevent the cancer from spreading. Unaltered male dogs frequently ex¬ perience prostate gland enlargement. This gland which normally rests at the base of the bladder, expands backward into the rectum, interrupting bladder func¬ tion and causing severe constipation. When the dog strains to eliminate, the tissues of the rectum rupture, causing perianal hernias. If performed in time, neutering results in the shrinkage of the prostate, normally without any further trouble. Sterilization is recommended imme¬ diately following the onset of puberty, about six months of age. females do not need to go through heat prior to spaying and may be spayed when pregnant. Sterilization prior to one year imparts the most significant lifetime health bene¬ fits. But as long as the dog is not at surgical risk for other reasons, it is never to old for spaying or neutering. Sterilization runs anywhere from $40 to $80 depending on your vet But there are many clinics which offer it at much lower costs. Ask your local animal shelter or humane society for the names of low-

cost clinics in your area. This doesn't mean they're any less good than a normal vet. It's just like a clinic for humyns as op¬ posed to a private doctor. The cost of sterilization may seem high to many of you. But it's not nearly as high as the cost of surgeries to treat mammary tumors, prostate enlarge¬ ment, or uterine infection. If your dog gets pregnant, providing food and vet care to the dam and her litter can easily exceed the cost to alter your pet. At a cost of approximately $50, these surgical procedures maybe the cheapest health insurance you can ever buy for your dog. And the best contribution you ever make toward curbing pet overpopu¬ lation. The idea that a dog will miss out on having sex if sterilized is the ridiculous notion caused by putting humyn emotions and behaviors onto the actions of another species. Rather your friend will be calmer without the hormonal roller¬ coaster, something I wish I could avoid. Behaviors like roaming, marking territory in your bedroom or on your record collec¬ tion and the urge to fight any dog around will weaken. However, neutering is not a substitution for discipline. A well trained dog is a happy dog. Sterilization does not effect performance in well trained protec¬ tion, obedience and field dogs. It is pos¬ sible that your dog may gain weight. Neutering slows down the dog's metabo¬ lism. However, inactivity and overfeeding make a lazy dog, not neutering. I know you love your dog, I'm not saying otherwise. But for the health of your friend, for the millions waiting for a home, spay or neuter them and leave the breeding to professionals.
First off I'm sorry to say that my planned article on crime in today’s soci¬ ety and in an anarchist society will not appear until next issue. The due date sprung up early and I would like to do more research before I write this article. With this sort of advance notice I'd like to invite any readers who have been think¬ ing on this topic to contribute any ideas
BLABBERINGS they might have. One of the most fre¬ quent arguments I hear against anarchy is that criminals will have free reign to murder and pillage. I disagree with this stance and hope to present foundations of criminality and solutions which anar¬ chists envision for our ideal society of the future. But until next time you're stuck with more of my opinions, the latest in¬ stallment of my forthcoming pamphlet on history and some other stuff that might relate to music. On now to this month's column. It is commonplace in the anarchist movement to champion the cause of op¬ pressed national minorities around the world. Anarchists have always decried the oppression of any group and pointed to this form of oppression as one of the manifest arguments against govern¬ ment. But these issues can be difficult for anarchists at times. In most places where ethnic unrest has flared up the forces of national liberation are led by MarxistLeninists or conservative reactionaries. Furthermore, many anarchists, including myself, are vehement anti-nationalists pointing out that all divisions of race and culture merely divide those who are oppressed, making them easier to rule and be manipulated, In my opinion anar¬ chists often jump to support movements of national liberation without fully under¬ standing the history of the conflict in question. It is rather ironicthat anarchists would support for instance a movement that was inspired by Islamic fundamen¬ talism, such as Afghanistan, when Islam is such a sexist, authoritarian and conser¬ vative religion. Yet our sympathy goes out to the victims of Soviet imperialism who were able to resist long enough to compel the Soviets to pull out of their country. One national liberation struggle we hear about consistently is that of the Pal¬ estinian Arabs. I think this particular conflict well illustrates the problems anar¬ chists have when they choose sides in a national liberation struggle. First, how did Israel come to occupy the territories of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights. In the nineteenth century many Jewish people began to embrace Zion¬ ism, the movement to establish a perma¬ nent Jewish homeland, as an alternative to thousands of years of oppression and migration. In 1917 in order to gain Jewish support in WW 1 Britain promised to establish a Jewish homeland in the territory known as Palestine, then part of the
Ottoman Empire. This promise was never fulfilled, and as anti-Semitism in¬ creased in Europe many Jews began to move to this new territory anyway. Fol¬ lowing the Holocaust and WW 2 the few surviving European Jews moved to Pal¬ estine in droves, despite the British at¬ tempt to stop them. In 1948 Britain de¬ cided it could no longer control Palestine and planned to partition it between Jews and Arabs. However, as soon as Israel declared independence the surrounding Arab states invaded immediately with equipment left to them by the British. The 1948 Arab-lsraeli War resulted in the borders being drawn along the lines where troops faced each-other at the cease-fire. The Jewish occupied portion of Israel we know today, and the portion which had been planned for the Palestini¬ ans was absorbed into Jordan, Egypt, and Syria. The borders which were drawn left Israel in a perilous situation, sur¬ rounded by hostile states who refused to accept Israel’s right to exist. After the the Arab-lsraeli war of 1956, and the Six Day War of 1967 Israel occupied the main avenues of the invasion and areas from which Arab states could shell Israeli cit¬ ies. Prior to this there had been no great uproar about the disposed Palestinains in Jordan and Syria. But the Israeli occu¬ pation of these territories led Arab states and the Soviet Union to begin bankrolling terrorist groups such as the PLO and pushing the Palestinian cause in the United Nations as a means of destabiliz¬ ing Israel. Israel, after many years of occupation began to colonize the occu¬ pied territories. This has led to brutal practices of segregation and oppression of the Arabs living in these areas. The uprising against Israeli occupation has resulted in numerous atrocities and even more repressive measures. So where does the anarchist side? The Jews have been victims of the most brutal oppression in history and demand a homeland where they are secure. This has resulted in a militaristic, conservative state which visits extreme oppression on the Palestinians. The Palestinians have no nation state of their own and are dis¬ persed in refugee camps or are living under Israeli occupation. The Palestini¬ ans fight the Jews using terrorist meas¬ ures such as machine gunning school buses and blowing up airliners. The PLO is a Marxist and Islamic group which if in power would probably be about as pro¬ gressive as the government in Iran.
There is no clear choice here. Both sides use authoritarian, terroristic and statist means to achieve their goal. Both hate each other and are often extremely racist. Both sides have a valid reason to fight and a blood feud exists which will proba¬ bly last forever. Before we can choose sides in such a conflict we have to exam¬ ine them in detail, is either side even worth supporting? Is it a cop out to sup¬ port no one? Can we as anarchists say we support everyone's struggle for na¬ tional self-determination when this con¬ flicts with our anarchist beliefs? When these struggles come into conflict where do we stand?_ No space for a column by your editor this time so I'll use this space to pass along some info that didn’t fit anywhere else. First, the local anarcho-grind band MISERY is getting a tour together for the West Coast for June of this year. If you can help out please give them a call at: (612) 874-8777 (Jon & Gary) or (612) 874 - 7490 (Todd). Word has it they’re sold out of their last remaining copies of their second EP although AYF has three cop¬ ies left in stock. Crust Records is working with us to set up a U.S. tour for APOCA¬ LYPSE and CONFRONTATION this summer, as it looks right now many of the shows on the West Coast will probably be with MISERY. If you can help us out, please call us (phone # inside front cover) or call Ben at (508) 222-8393. Next, DESTROY!, the undisputed fasted band in the midwest and featuring P.E. columnist Felix Von Havoc, has their demo out now. I personally recommend this one. Get it through AYF distribution while stocks last! A band featuring a former P.E. colum¬ nist, Rev. Phil and THE SCRODS, will have their debut EP out any day now. I've heard the advance cassette and this will definitely be one not to miss! Profane Existence will be distributing it world¬ wide as well as AYF distribution by mail¬ order. Last, if by anychance you do not find the literature selection offered by AYF distribution tohave what you are lookin for, I'd suggest writing to AK Press for a copy of their complete mail-order cata¬ log. For and IRC / SASE you will get a copy of their huge mail order catalog which features numerous books, periodi¬ cals and pamphlets. Felix's Brief History of Anarchism Part Three:
Aanarchists in the Russian Revolution The anarchist movement in Russia has been one of the strongest in the world. In the vents surrounding the Russian Revolution the anarchists were always at the fore, pushing for more radical action which would usher in the new society of their dreams. Anarchists were active in Russia since the late nine¬ teenth century, spawning some of the movements greatest thinkers Bakunin and Kropotkin. Aarchists were active in the revolution of 1905 and in spreading revolt and propaganda among the peasants and workers to the outbreak of World War One. Most anarchists opposed the nationalistic and imperialist war and called instead for a class war of the workers in the trenches and in the factories against kings, bosses and officers in the palaces mansions. A small faction followed Kropotkin in his support for the allied side as a means to thwart reactionary German imperialism. The anarchists spread propaganda amongst the soldiers and workers as economic conditions worsened and the death toll mounted. When popular unrest resulted in the February Revolution and the overthrow of the Tsar the anarchists pushed for another revolution which would sweep away the provisional government. In the summer of 1917 all across Russia peasants took control of the land from the land¬ lords, burned the property records and redistributed the wealth of the nobility. The workers took control of many of the factories, albeit with disastrous results. During the July Days of Unrest an¬ archists thronged to the streets demanding more radical action. The anarchists in the cities organized into Black Guards, armed militias to defend the revolution. When the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government in October 1917, many anarchists supported them. Indeed, the head of the military-revolutionary committee was an anarchist. Other anarchists criticized working with the Bolshevik communists, who promptly setthemselves up as a new dictatorship. The anarchists pressed for a third revolu¬ tion which would sweep away the Bolsheviks as well. However, the new regime became increasingly oppressive and began to imprison and execute anarchists who once supported them. The anarchists sensed the oppressive nature of the Bolshevik regime and it’s growing totalitarianism early. The troops of the Kronstadt navel base, many of the anarchists, were for years the vanguard of the revolution. The Kronstadt sailors rose against the Bolshe¬ viks in 1921 demanding an end to their dictatorship and oppres¬ sion. Their demands echoed the popular spirit in the country at the time. However, by this time the Bolsheviks had grown too powerful to be challenged and the revolt was mercilessly crushed. This growing oppression coincided with the bitter Civil War fought in Russia from 1918 to 1921. The forces of reaction and the overthrown bourgeoisie fought to crush the new revolution. These were known as the white armies, while the Bolsheviks and their supporters were Reds. France, Britain, The United States, Japan, Greece and Poland sent armies to crush the revolution or aid the White Armies. The anarchists were forced to support the communists in the fight against the White Armies. Thousand of the most militant and energetic anarchists died in this bitter struggle fought from the plains of Poland to the icy wastes of Siberia. The most dramatic example of the Russian anarchist
movement in this time were the Makhnovists of the Ukraine. Nester Makhno was a Ukrainian peasant who had embraced anarchism since he was 17. In 1906 he was imprisoned for assisting in the assassination of a police chief. In prison he met many other anarchists, and when he was released in 1917 he traveled to his native village to spread the revolution. The Ukrainian peasants took to anarchism as a natural reaction against their hated oppressors; the land lords, bankers, tax collectors, police and bureaucrats from the cities. When the Bolsheviks made peace with Germany the anarchists fought a guerrilla war against the Germans and their puppets. When the Germans withdrew the anarchist grew and organized. Makhno was a gifted military and political leader and was a hero to the peasants of the Ukraine who called him Batko or little father. The Makhnovist army fought against the White armies of General Deninkin sometimes in alliance with the Bolsheviks who tried to send them on suicide missions and break up their units. In the summer of 1919 the Makhnovist movement peaked with an area of the Ukraine almost twice the size of France temporarily freed from any government control. The anarchist army numbered as many as 40,000 strong and was instrumental in defeating Deninkins drive on Moscow. The economic and political reorganiza¬ tion was always hampered by the vagaries of war but the land was given to the peasants who worked it and steps taken to organize society on anarchist principles. But the Bolsheviks could not tolerate the anarchist challenge to their dictatorship and broke the alliance with the Makhnovists, invading the liber¬ ated areas. The only way the Bolsheviks could get the Red Army to fight the Makhnovists was to spread lies that he was a White bandit, and to use troops from Asia and Siberia who could not understand the anarchist propaganda. When they could, large numbers of Red soldiers deserted and joined the Makhnovists. In 1921 the Makhnovists allied with the Bolsheviks once again to halt the offensive mounted by White General Wrangel and the British. Many of the anarchists died in this campaign, their numbers were constantly reduced from high casualty rate and a tuberculosis epidemic then sweeping Russia. When the White forces were defeated the Bolsheviks turned on the anarchists with brutal ferocity. Thousands died in battle or were executed by the secret police. Thousand more were to live short lives in prison camps doing forced labor. Makhno and the core of his army fought their way out of Russia to Romania. Makhno himself had been wounded several times and was sick with tuberculosis. He lived out the rest of his life like many anarchists who were lucky enough to escape Russia. Broken, poor and sick Makhno worked odd factory jobs in Paris. Suffering from depression and depression Makhno died of tuberculosis and his wounds in 1934, at the age of 44. The struggle of the Russian anarchists against the indomitable odds is one of the least known, yet most heroic struggles of history. Their sacrifice and martyrdom should serve to inspire us today. The dream for which they fought and died has not yet been crushed. Manifesto: Victory or death. This is what confronts the peasants of the Ukraine at the present moment in history. But we shall not perish. There are too many of us. We are humanity. So we m ust win - win not so that we may follow the example of past years and hand over our fate to some new master, but to take it into our own hands and conduct our lives according to our own conception of the truth
SCENE REPORTS? WE CA J ALWAYS USE THEM! (PLEASE INCLUDE PHOTOS IF YOU CAN) Greetings from Denver and Boulder! My name is pierce and I'll be doing the scene reports from now on. This report will hopefully let you know who to see and what's going on etc. if you're ever in the area. I'll include 'zines and places to place and who to contact and what not. The alternative (hc/punk/straight edge) scene here is growing and growing. The biggest part seems to be what we call Denver punk. (A true bastard child of several styles.) It's a different sound from other places ans is becoming popular at a rapid rate. The only drag with the scene is that a lot of people seem to think alternative only pertains to clothes and music. They would like it to be fashion not ideology. But more and more people are coming around and things are starting to really happen. The racist skins have been booted out of Denver. Unfortunately only as far as the suburbs of Englewood and Westminster. The Houston skins kept coming up and trying to organize but had no luck with the widely divided Denver skins. Hopefully they will be booted out of the suburbs and hopefully someone in Houston will get together in Houston andkicktheskinsout of there also!!! The club situation hasn't caught up to the scene yet. There are five clubs that allow alternative music (non-metal) in the Denver/Boulder area. One of them is a joke; The Underground is being shunned for it's piece of shit mgr / owner policies and prices, they want 400 dollars to rent the place (an old meat packing plant). Or if they "put on" the show expect for them to take 75% of the door. Any bands coming through Denver are urged NOT to play at the UNDERGROUND. Another alternative club, Pogos of Boul¬ der, is closing it's doors. No one knows why, but that is just one less place to play. The three remaining places are all cool and here is some info on who to contact. The Classroom is a squat house in Den¬ ver. the guys are cool and the playing area is a good size (It used to be a school). Call (303) 860-02881 and askfor Ketil. Penny Lane is a coffee house in Boulder where the manager is the best and despite being small some great shows have happened there. Call (303) 443-9516 and ask for Victoria. Quigleys is on the C.U. campus in Boulder. C.U. is too weird for words but the club is cool. It even has it's own P.A. Call (303) 4927704 and ask for Brad Arkin.

Well, being one of my favorite bands, it was only inevitable that an APOCALYPSE interview would grace the pages of Profane Existence sooner or later. Well, being rushed as usual, I found time to scribble out some questions which are pretty generic on my part - but that’s really not entirely my fault. At any rate, APOCALYPSE hail from that expansive hell known as Orange County, California and they’ve recently graced our aural receptors with a number of musical releases. So, in not so many words, lets just get on with it... P/E: How long have you been around and what | material do you have available? APOC: We’ve been around for over three years now. And our most brutal line-up consists of: Shawn-bass, Phil-drums, Rich-guitar, Nichole-vocais and Ralphvocals. Our available recordings include our newly I released e.p. entitled "Earth" on Crust Records. A| split e.p. with Transgression on Desperate Attempt. Also a cut on the new MRR compilation as well as two I new insane songs on the upcoming Profane | Existence comp.
P/E: Why the name APOCALYPSE and how does it apply to the band? APOC. To us "APOCALYPSE" is the beginning of the end, and from the ashes of that, arises something new. It is a new dawn who’s beauty is determined by the collective efforts of those who care and strive for a better world. P/E: What kinds of music or specific bands influence your playing style? APOC: We listen to tons of different bands which include Bolt Thrower, Atheist, Morbid Angel, Helibastard, Doom and Amebix. Each of these bands’ particular style has influenced us immensely in our songs. But our ideals still rest with the "Old School" (which obviously include Crass, Crucifix, Flux and Peni. Basically bands that can create an atmosphere lor mood with intelligent, thought provoking ideas are [the ones we really get into. P/E: What sort of messages do you try to convey in you lyrics? I APOC: Before our lyrics were blatant messages based on politics, war vivisection, human rights and racism. That ode of thinking came from the European [anarcho type bands as well as local bands such as I Iconoclast, Body Count, and Final Conflict. We felt music was an excellent way of convey such ideas. Until recently our Syncs have been purposely written more subtle. We would like our listener to sit down and (interpret what they’re reading and maybe come up I with his or her own solutions Our conviction is still I strong, the ideas are the same, the approach is a bit different.

If this is to be a true alternative, it should include varied musical tastes, political views as well as sexual preference. Like all problems, education is the key. P/E. Are you vegetarians? Do you have any specific thoughts on animal rights? APOC: Yes, we are all vegetarians. As for animal rights, we firmly believe it it. There is no need to perform disgusting acts of violence upon animals in the name of "science". Vivisection has been proven ineffective as well as inhumane. It is up to us all of us to help stop the money motivated farce by bringing it to the public’s attention with direct action. __ |P/E: How about multi-nationals - do you| I think they should be boycotted? Recently, they released a 7" I which is an absolutely wonderful sonic assault to say the least. I At any rate, here goes the interview. Matt, the vocalist, was kind 1 enough to respond to the answers..._ P/E: What sort of confrontation does your name stand for? MATT: ’Confrontation’ is a strong word: it means something different every time depending on the situation. Each person has his/her own little confrontations in life, be it political, personal, social, etc. It basically means all kins of confrontation not just one, but when you hear our music and see us you will see our confrontation.

P/E: What are some of your views on censorship? Do you think pornography should be banned because it may cause rape? MATT: I don't believe in any kind of censorship. I think if you did ban pornography then the freaks wouldn’t have anything to jerk to. And in that concern they would be more willing to commit rape then if they were reading. The human mind tends to wander, it’s curious. In some concern, pornography can prevent rape. I dont read em but our drummer has a few Playboys I think?? I personally don’t think it is sexist because it is the same for both male and female, there is no difference between male and female pornography. So in that case, there’s no discrimination. P/E: What do you see as the purpose of fanzines and interviews? MATT: Zines and interviews, to me, should be to enlighten people about the bands opinions, musical style and just to bring the the public closer or further (hopefully not) to a band. You didn’t ask any music questions so I’ll have to say that here. So here it is, we play balls-out mayhemic, sepiternal grind which maimes at mach 20! Equal to a full frontal lobotomy performed with a butter knife! (oh yeah, this is supposed to be a band interview!! -ed.) P/E. Do you have any future plans for the band? MATT: Yes, we have a tour to the east coast coming up in June-July with Orange County grinder brother Apocalypse. There will be a split 7" ep for the tour with both bands on it. If anyone can help get gigs write to Dan at Profane Existence or Ben at BSU/Crust records (P.O. Box 2308 / Plainville, MA 02762). after th tour we will come home to work on new songs for the album we are planning, we don’t have a label yet be we have a few connections lined up and maybe something will come of it. At any rate, we’d like to have an album out by early ’91. P/E: Last words /comments? We have our "1989" 7" ep currently in circulation. You can get it from us ($3 U.S. / $5 elsewhere) and it’s also available from the AYF Distribution. Please pick one up, it’s a doozy! At any rate, I would like to thank Dan for this pleasant interview (even though it was all political) and I would like to say Hi to all our Minneapolis friends especially Dan, Rat, Felix & Destroy! - Soy-Core! Peace, love, freedom and much thanx. Lastly, if anyone wants to know about California, ask someone who lives here, not someone who moved away. We’ll see you at the Grinding ’90 U.S. tour with Confrontation / Apocalypse! Cheers bro - goodbye! Well, there you have it, CONFRONTATION exposed at last! Ha! If you want to further communicate with Matt or CONFRONTATION please feel free to write. Send stamps tho because I’m sure they get a lot of mail! If you write an especially nice letter maybe they’ll even send you some neat stickers like Matt sent us!

Quite an active bunch they are, besides doing scene reports for MRR they're also involved with a number of other projects. So read on now.. Questions fielded by Troll and Tammy was nice enough to respond for MEDIA CHILDREN P/E: Why the name MEDIA CHILDREN? What were your intentions when you formed the band? M/C' Our old drummer thought up the name, we had other names but we just kept MEDIA CHILDREN, Our intentions were and still are to do low priced, no age limit and benefit shows. We also want to release an E.P. eventually in the same vein as Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, Dirt, etc. but first we will be releasing a demo. We’re currently busied with so many different things that it’s difficult. Our first show will be in a month or so. Just recently we've improved enough to do so. It’s been hard to work it all out but finally things are working out. ^ P/E:How long have you been around and what is your et- current line-up? A< m/C: It will be two years in July. There were several months spent in limbo, Jae and I being unable to find band members. In the two years about a year and two to three months were spent actively. INSURRECTION: SPOTLIGHT ON ELSALVADOR suicide including the following:
CIVIL WAR
♦ Lifting price controls on all basic foods and petrol. ♦ Increasing electrical costs. ♦ Increasing public transportation costs. ♦A 5% cut in the national budget (Including health care) •And the liberalization of exports.
DEATH SQUADS AND U.S. DOLLARS Compiles em tp-oll News reports and general press coverage has dwindled of the winter months but the struggle for freedom for the people of El Salvador continues Yes, there is civil war, one which has been waged for a decade now, against the U.S. backed government know for it’s corruptness and brutality Our own coverage of the recent events in El Salvador has been delayed until now. Events in this article may seem a bit dated due to the fact this article was not completed in time for publication in the last issue. Despite this, we feel it necessary to pass on information pertaining to the situation in El Salvador, which is worsening daily as the 10 year old civil war continues. Background Information The Central America nation of El Salvador has a population of 6.5 million peopie in a land area roughly the size of New Jersey. The U.S. backed government is made up of an oligarchy run by the military and rich elite. This "democratically elected" government is guilty of some of the worse human rights violations in the world and is responsible for the suffering of millions. In a report by EPOC (Environmental Project of Central America) stated the following facts attesting to the misery of this nation's peoples: *96% of El Salvadoran families make less than what is considered needed for basic survival. •2% of the population owns 60% of arable the land. •75% of the children are malnourished, with the highest infant mortality rate in Central America. •There are only three doctors for every 10,000 people. •52% of the children get no education, while adult illiteracy is 60%. •32 8% of the population is unemployed with 46% being underemployed_ Further resulting from the decade iong civil war and the governments "scorched earth" policy, over 1.5 million people are refugees, being forced to leave the country or live in shanty towns.
The ARENA government The Arena Government was founded in I960 and is made up of a coalition of powerful military leaders and rich land owners. This government is widely known to be responsible for the formation of death squads which have murdered 70,000 civilians since 1980 (1 in 93 people). Despite this, the U.S. government sends 15 million dollars each day in "aid" to the ARENA government under the guise as being necessary to stop the spread of communism (after all, El Salvador is practically in our "back yard"). Our government claims to be supporting a democratic state although the opposition was not allowed to field a candidate In the 1989 presidential election. The "official" winner of this election was Alfredo Christiani, who is regarded as just a figurehead to the real power brokers behind the ARENA government. Christiani and his party have recently installed new policies deemed economic
These are programs designed at taking the government out of the private sector encouraging further investment by western corporations. He has proposed an increase in jobs by 20,000 a month, but has yet to explain or prove how this is to be accomplished. Coupled with a powerful U.S. trained and equipped military, the government has also used death squads to achieve their aims and quash opposition to their rule. The death squads role is to eliminate political dissidents and leaders of groups with opposing views to those of the government. Those targeted include union leaders, teachers, church officials and so on. Almost anyone who is capable of housing, feeding and educating their family runs the risk of being labeled a subversive and found murdered. It is common knowledge that the death squads are made up members of police units and military officers. They always operate under the cover of night, dressed in civilian cloths, dragging their victims from their homes, who are often horrifically tortured and mutilated before being killed. Although nobody has officially been prosecuted for these crimed pressure from human rights groups (and from an embarrassed U.S. government) has resulted with the ARENA government introducing the following "legalized repressions" to limit domestic dissent: •Extension of holding period without % charge for 7 days • Formation of legal paramilitary groups to catch subversives.
•Legislation to make organizing illegal.
political
•Restrictions on publications by subversives. •And most recently the general suspension of constitutional rights. _ _
These are the same "legal" tactics used by such fascist regimes as South Africa and China. The U.S. Role The United States government provides over half the yearly budget of
INSURRECTION: SPOTLIGHT ON ELSALVADOR El Salvador government - 3.5 billion dollars since 1980. The money goes towards buying military hardware including bullets, tear gas and bombs which are often dropped on civilian targets. The amount of money our government pours into El Salvador makes it the largest counter-insurgency warsince Veit Nam. In fact, our we pay for the training and equipping of the El Salvadoran army and our "advisors" have already taken part in combat resulting in 13 U.S. deaths. Units trained by the U.S. advisors have also been linked to numerous unprovoked atrocities on the civilian population. One, on the 21st of September, 1988, in which a Salvadoran Military unit trained by U.S. Green Barets entered the village of San Francisco where they rounded up 40 civilians and blindfolded them. Ten were later taken to a near-by river and shot. Support for the ARENA government in El Salvador is vitally important to the United States imperialist policies. A subservient work force supplying an endless source of cheap labor (average wage is $3 a day) and multinationals such as Coca Cola and Texas Instruments reap enormous amounts of profits due to El Salvadors lax labor protection laws. El Salvador is also of
key Military importance due to it’s strategic location to Nicaragua, where the United States is funding a covert guerilla war against the Marxist government there. The government of El Salvador is also aided by the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank, who are deeply involved with the exploitation of the third world and prop up many other dictatorial governments where profits can be reaped - South Africa for example. Political Opposition There are few powerful political groups who avidly oppose the ARENA government. The most commonly supported is the PDC (Christian Democrats) whose leader, Fidel Chavez Mena, has stated the reforms implaced by Christiani would benefit only 3% of the population. Other groups include the UNTS (National Unity of Salvadoran Workers), UNOC (National Union of Workers and Peasants - supported by the AFL-CIO in the United States) and numerous other labor and student groups. 100,000 people comprised of many of these groups joined together for a mass march on September 15th in San Salvador peacefully protesting the
policies of the ARENA government. Unfortunately, the prospects for a peaceful solution are very dim. Especially so since the government has stepped up it’s measures in crippling all opposition, including renewed vigor in attacks by death squads. The FMLN Insurgency The FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, named after the leader of a 1932 rebellion) is by far the most powerful and effective fighting force opposing the ARENA government. Although criticized for their own not-soclean record of war atrocities and Marxist-Leninist ideology, they may be the only group capable of winning a war against the government and putting a halt to western capitalist imperialism. As a modern military force they have an estimated 10,000 regulars in the field with about twice that number of "commandos urbanos". In recent years the tactics and fighting ability of the FMLN has matured presenting a formidable opposition to the 60,000 strong government army. The attacks by the FMLN have concentrated on destroying the nations infrastructure with the intent of crippling the governments ability to rule the country. Power stations, roads and bridges are common targets and an estimated 30% of the country side is controlled by FMLN units at any given time. The FMLN uses much different tactics than those of the government, opting to build ^.support from the civilian population, while the government continues to isolate itself from the people. The FMLN also provides community support through Radio Venceremos and Radio F. Marti. These stations report on troop movements, disseminate health care information and work to preserve El Salvador’s native* culture. The Fall Offensive
The body of Herbert Anaya, president of the Non-Governmental Human Rights Commission of Ei Salvador, moments after he was killed by military death squads.
On November 12th, 1989 FMLN insurgents launched their largest offensive in 10 years in over 50 coordinated attacks throughout El Salvador. The most heavily concentrated attack was in the capital San Salvador, with over 1500 rebels attacking army, police and security forces barracks and the president s residences. The offensive came after growing right-wing violence that reached its peak with the bombing of the FENESTRAS labour confederation, which resulted in the FMLN calling off peace talks then in progress From the
INSURRECTION: SPOTLIGHT ON ELSALVADOR start of the attacks the government imposed a nation-wide blackout leaving the rebel radios Venceremos and Faraburido Marti. In the working class barrios of northern San Salvador, the FMLN were immediately able to consolidate themselves, It was in these areas that the strength and support of the guerillas was clear; residents took part in building barricades and trenches with the FMLN rebels and many took up arms. Liberal organizations and groups called on members to arm themselves and join with the guerillas, including mothers of the disappeared FECMAFAM, a refugee support group - PADECOES, plus members of the popular unions and groups. "We held marches, we held strikes and the government instead of solving our problems, the massacred us" one person said. FMLN communiques called on the people to stop work and integrate themselves into combat. By November 15th the guerillas claimed control of 8 of the 14 provinces. The offensive was titled "Out with the Fascists, Febe Elizabeth Lives” (Febe Elizabeth was a union leader slain in the FENESTRAS attack;) In response government forces used helicopters and C-47 gunshlps to bomb and strafe rebel positions, directly
attacking civilians as well. U.S. pilots are reported to have flown night-time bombing runs in place of inadequately trained Salvadoran pilots. Guatemalan, Honduran and U.S. troops stationed in Honduras massed along the border. U.S. warships moved from Panama to the coast of El Salvador. Under the state of emergency security forces have used the cover to step up assassinations and disappearances of leftists. Mass raids have been carried out on labour and human rights groups offices, as well as the university. Civilians have had their hands chemically treated to detect gun¬ powder. If so, they’ve been shot. By November 20th the guerillas had pulled back from some areas and began re-grouping. The Left must now face reprisals from the right and many have retreated with the guerillas into their mountain positions for training. Over 1000 civilians were reported to have died in the uprising, with 400 government soldiers reported killed and an unreported number of the FMLN. Solidarity Solidarity actions across North America reached a pinnacle during the late fall / early winter. Here in the Twin
A Salvadoran soldier held his rifle to the head of a suspected guerilla in the San Salvador suburb of Sultana. After several minutes of questioning, the man was taken into custody. His fate is unknown. Cities, the response was quick and highly publicized by the media. Although there has been a steady amount of pressure maintained through 1988 and 1989, November 1989 marked the high point in solidarity and resistance here. On November 17th a spirited demonstration took place at the new Federal Building in downtown Minneapolis - this was in response to the slaying of the six Jesuit priests by rightist hit squads. Later on that evening, a fund raising tea party held at the Humphry Institute was stormed by angry activists who occupied the place for1 a short time causing general chaos and small amounts of property damage, The fund raiser was being held by the Law firm of O’Conner and Hannon, a group actively involved with lobbying and public relations for the ARENA government. On November 20th a large contingency of protestors descended on the downtown Minneapolis offices of Senator David Durenburger. This involved about 200 activists with a large number storming the offices and occupying them for a short time. On the 21st, an even larger group of activists converged on the Hennepin and Lake Street intersection, in Uptown Minneapolis and blockaded traffic. This was a more militant and visible action, using similar tactics found effective in the past. When the police finally moved in to disperse the crowd wielding sticks and riot control gear, some activists decided to fight back. Although the
crowd was dispersed, one police officer was left bloodied and unconscious in the snow. A separate but related struggle was also fought concerning the involvement of the law firm of O’Conner and Hannon. After several months of protest and public outcry, they refused to cut ties with the ARENA government. Resulting from this, pressure was put on the Minneapolis City council to sever ties with this law firm, which they finally did after much protest and debate. We have learned that recently Hennepin County has aiso done the same. Conclusion The battle in El Salvador is far from over. The El Salvadoran government has stepped up attacks on dissent after the latest offensive by the FMLN. There should be no illusions made that the battle for freedom will be won if the FMLN is victorious, although it will be a slap in the face to U.S. imperialism. We should continue the pressure and solidarity here at home. Our tax money still funds the ARENA government and we must do whatever necessary to stop it. Here there are no death squads and no excuses.^_ NOTE: The coverage of the Fall Uprising was taken from Endless Struggle magazine For further reporting of- the FMLN and solidarity actions consult Endless Struggle #11, available for $1.50 ppd. from P. TAKE BACK YOUR LIFE: A Womyn's Guide to Alternative and Natural Health Care By Alicia non Grata Healing ourselves, every womyn's right. Yet throughout our lives we have relied solely on interpretations of 'experts' who prescribe remedies for our various ailments and problems based on what is right for an 'average' woman (or, in this vivisection-based medical world, what is right for an 'average rat, dog, etc!). These "'experts" often prescribe medicine with an iatrogenic effect, that is, a 'cure' or remedy which may worsen the problem or cause another. What we often fail to realize is that we know our bodies best; and in a lot of cases often all that is needed is a change in diet, lifestyle, or to use our plant allies or medicines found in nature as afar less harmful and debilitating way of treating our problems. To look at our bodies holistically, not as a series of isolated malfunctions and breakdowns. This is notto say we should always ignore doctors advise, ordiscount all advances in modern science. However, the focus of this series of articles will be healing ourselves, of listening to what our bodies are trying to tell us and choosing our own course of action. First I will examine history / herstory to see why self-help and the help of womyn midwives, herbalists and healers were ef¬ fectively discouraged. In later articles I will discuss various wimmins complaints, in¬ fections, venereal dis¬ eases, menstrual problems, birth con¬ trol, abortions, preg¬ nancy and nutritional needs of womyn, all from a herbal, natural and alternative per¬ spective. But now, to give a sense of why many wimmin feel powerless in the face of gynecologists and modern science I pres¬ ent:
PART ONE: Witches, Midwives & Wise-Wimmin The History, Suppression and Persecution of Wimmin Healers Once, medicine belonged to the people, not to some higher class with superior knowledge. Most healers were wimmin, as opposed to today, where roughly 90% of physicians are men. In pagan Rome there were several kinds of midwives (onefor birth¬
ing, one for general health, etc.) and all of whom were connected to the female temple. In Mexico the peasant womyn healer was called the Recibidora; obstetrician, god mother, priestess and witch. In the first half of the Christian era, arts of medicine remained almost exclusively in the hands of wise-wimmin because ancient healing shrines were devoted almost exclu¬ sively to the goddesses priestesses. (1) In general, wimmin practiced herbal medicine and were midwives, wise-wimmin, healers, therapists, and general medical practitioners. In early Medieval England, there were wimmin clan leaders who had matriarchal rights in law giving and law enforcement; the Magna Carta of Chester called them 'iudices de witch'; judges who were witches. Wimmin elders once had political power among the clans but patriarchal religion (such as Christianity) and law gradually took it away from them and called them witches to dispose of them.12) Most people have heard of witch hunts, the Inquisition and other terrible crimes committed in the name of 'God' yet do not realize that the witch hunts of the 14th to 17th century were not 'mobs gone mad', ergot poisoning or extreme behaviors brought on by superstitions and fear, but well-exe¬ cuted plans of extermination aimed at wiping out wimmins power and crushing peas¬ ant uprisings. In Witches. Midwives and Nurses: A
History of WomenJjaab ers. authors Barbara Ehrenreich & Deider Eng¬ lish write that "The witch hunts were well-organized campaigns initiated, fi¬ nanced, and executed by church and state..." The most virulent witch hunts were associated with peri¬ ods of great social up¬ heaval. Besides the incredibly and undeniably misogynist nature of the Catholic Church and Christianity in general, the reasons were political: Wipe out the peoples’ healers and you effectively wipe out the people. Though the rise of patriarchal powers and the establishment and defining of a class system, those in the ruling class realized that by crushing wimmins' rights to study midwifery (and later on in medical history to make it impossible for wimmin to study medicine) they could control the population and quell any sparks of autonomy. With an emerging ruling class and Christianity on the rise, such auton-
omy was contrary to what these forces thrived on; subversive unlicensed practitioner of medicine and other practical skills."(6) and blind obedience. There is evidence that wimmin did meet in Interestingly enough, although it was a crime to practice witch¬ small groups, not to conduct services to Satan as the Church craft, it was not a crime to practice sorcery, which was often accused, but to discuss herbal lore, news and perhaps served practiced by the Church. Yet wimmin were also persecuted, tried and executed if Bible:" The spirit of the Church in it's contempt for women, as they practiced white magic or the healing arts - practicing shown in the scriptures, in Paul's Epistles and the Pentateuch, herbalism or midwifery, making people well. The priestess mother became something impure, associated with the devil, and her lore an infernal incan¬ tation, her very cooking a brewing of poison, now her very existence of a source of sin to man. Thus, womyn, as mother and priestess (and healer) became womyn as witch. Here is the reason why in all the biblical researches and higher criticism, the scholars never touch the position of wimmin.(8) Alas, the suppression of the womyn - as healer went far beyond the scope of witch hunts. From there, wimmin were banned from universities and medical colleges (which taught bullshit 'medicine' anyway, such as the bleeding by use of leeches, water treatments, incantations and religious rites) and carried right over to America where wimmin were "too weak" to study medicine, midwifery was banned and outlawed (in some places, still is) to be replaced by male gynecologists and obstetricians who hadn't a clue as to female reproductive organs, who performed gynecological exams and delivered babies under sheets and with their heads turned ’lor modesty's sake." This anarchist punk 'zine is from Seattle and features interviews with SUBVERT CHRIST ON A CRUTCH, HOLOCAUST, ASPERIN I FEAST, reviews and a slew of short political articles. This is really well done for a first issue, certainly a 'zine to start picking up since it’s only going to get better. Not your traditional interview / review 'zine here. What we have here is a really top-notch, quality 'zine combining just the right amount of politics, protest and punk rock. In this issue there’s interviews (presented in a unique style) with local New Zealand bands, a section called ’Protest" (which gives you an idea of the subject), some skate stuff, tons of gig reviews as well as record reviews, scene reports and so on. DEMOLITION DERBY/donation 11" x 17" - newsprint - 32 pages This is what the authors describe as an unspecific revolutionary Journal - meaning they won’t label themselves as anarchists, communists, etc. The main push of this is rather long analysis articles on civilization and society casting a downward glance against technology and industry. I would have like it more if there was not 12 pages devoted entirely to trashing the anarcho-syndicalists. One part I found disturbing was an editorial complaining about the 89 anarchist gathering and how it was spoiled-mainly attacking "heros" and the [ Day of Action and more petty stuff like the "annoying presence of Nazi Skins" - which was totally untrue* c/o _Eliza Blackweb / P.O. Box 3582 / Tuscon, AZ 85722’
RAGMAN #12/$1 ppd. 6 1/4" x 9" - offset - 24 pages I didn’t really like this one very much I think the blatant sexist attitudes ♦ half-cocked hippy slam totally takes away from any good qualities presented here. There's an article about AGNOSTIC FRONT, interviews with | CHEMICAL PEOPLE, TOXIC REASONS, PENELOPE HOUSTON and more. Unfortunately there ain’t much of it j worth reading. 1015 Wentworth / Green Bay, Wl 54304
READ IT (EATSHIT) This is a very good anarchist punk ’zine from Bristol, put out by a guy who is active in Class War and runs a mail order distribution of records and magazines. This issue has some very well done interviews with CONFLICT, CULTURE SHOCK, ACTIVE MINDS, INTERNAL AUTONOMY and KISMET HC. Also letters, reviews and some small articles. Well worth picking up. Box 8 Colston SL / Bristol / England (Felix)
SIGNS OFLIFE#1/$1.50 ppd. 8 1/2x11- copied - 36 pages They say, ”A voice of the New York anarcho-punk community." Fuckin' excellent I say! A really exciting action-orientated attitude here. This 'zine is virtually spilling over with idealism - which can never cause any harm! Two interviews here; FLUX OF PINK INDIANS and the APOSTATES. Also, articles on El Salvador, anarchism, non-leather footwear, etc. There’s also | reviews, recipes and more punk rock shit than three issues of MRR! Definitely one to support This one is put I out by NYDAC, a group of N.Y.C. anarchist youth who are actively involved with the local punk scene. P.O. Box 365, Canal St Stn. / New York, NY 10013
MRR #81 /$2.50 ppd. 8 1/2" x 11" - newsprint -128 pages Another fact-filled issue in an endless saga of punk rock coverage. Highlights of this issue include the results of their first questionnaire, an article about alternative / anarchist literature, and of course the always expansive coverage of the punk / hardcore culture, always well worth keeping up with P.O. JERSEY BEAT #39 / $2 8 1/2" x 11" - newsprint - 64 pages A pretty wide range of music coverage and the title suggests the subject here. Interviews include DAS DAMEN, SUPERTOUCH, BIG WHEEL and a number of bass players. Some articles and a healthy amount of reviews make this complete. 48 Gregory Ave. #2 / Weehawken, NJ 07087
SYSTEM OPPOSED #4/ 5 1/2" x 8 1/2' -copied - 32 pages Get your reading glasses on for this one because you get three fanzines worth of stuff reduced down to fit into this compact package The style and layout screams of U K. influence and a real ’’homemade fanzine" feel. I think the best part of this one is the letter section which has become a forum for many pertinent social issues There’s also interviews with POLLUTION CIRCUS, THE PHLEGMS and info on CONFRONTATION. Also there’s a number of articles / opinions on a wide variety of subjects, zine and record reviews as well as contact lists. I'd strongly suggest this to anyone looking for some serious thought-provoking reading - but don’t forget your glasses! P.O. Box 1857 /Tustin, CA 92680 THE LAST OF THE HIPPIES. 6 1/2 x8 1/2 -offset-28 pages This is a reprinting of the the sad but true story by Penny Rimbaud from CRASS. The story revolves around the main character, Phil Russel, and how he was killed by the oppression of the British Government. It’s a pretty tragic tail but worth reading. This was originally printed in the booklet that came with the "Christ the Album" box set Excellently reproduced by the Flower Pot Press, (available through A.Y.F. Distribution) THIN K FOR YOURS ELF# 11 4 x 5 1/2" - copied - 24 pages A rather unique style of layout sets this apart from most zines we get. The contents semi-revolve around the title with the editor including what he feels like. There’s some fiction in this issue, some serious and lighter stuff, as well as commentary and opinions An interesting little publication. Available through A.Y.F Distribution [ THE WEEDEATER #4/ 8 1/2" x 11" - copied - 8 pages This is a pretty decent attempt at putting together an anarchist journal on the U S F. campus. APOCALYPSE /TRANSGRESSION split EP Five songs of crustacaust to assault your senses. TRANSGRESSION play some of the most menacing, teeth gnashing stuff I've heard in some time. Lyrics espouse the evils of wealth and the banality of life at | times. Two hair-raising monsters unleashed by APOCALYPSE! Searing guitars and pounding rhythm make me just say play that fucker again. Desperate Attempt Records / 1320 S. Third St / Louisville, KY 40208 (Sids)
BLACK UNIFORMS - “Faces of Death" LP Loud and nasty Swedish Hardcore - lyrical subjects range from wasted youth “Acid Punk" to killing cops "A Good Cop (Is a Dead Cop)'' to the desire for uncensored j movies; "Uncut". At times this record musically reminds meof MOTORHEAD, which to me ain’t all that bad, with a bit of DISCHARGE thrown in for good measure. Lyrically I’m somewhat iffy about the content I feel with time and a little growth these dudes will pump out some totally hair¬ pulling noise around. FORCE FED-"Claustrophobia" This is Kalv from HERESY'S new band, and they’re pretty I fucking good. Straight hardcore, not as thrashing as earlier HERESY, with a more structured style and more vocal inflection. This sounds sort of like POISON IDEA crossed with NEGA2IONE, INDEGESTI, BAD BRAINS and older HERESY material. The lyrics are well though out social observations which I found pretty interesting I and meaningful. Not a hint of metal influence so it’s 100% safe for everyone sick of crust, speed, death, and I wants a blast of high-quality hardcore In Your Face Records / P.O. I V/A "Earth Rapers and Hell Raisers" double 7" A fund raiser for me Phoenix based Earth First! a radical environmentalist activist group. HIPPYCORE Joel and Jack deserve a hearty congrats with this little master¬ piece. ! V/A "Vile Vibes" LP | This is one of those mixed bag comps. Side A is fucking awesome, side B is less impressive. PARADISE LOST (evil grinding noise), AUTOPSY (brutal death metal) and DEVIATED INSTINT (spooky death metal) all have killer new songs. The DOOM song is "Means to an End" which I is on their "Police Bastard" EP. Side B has CONFESSOR who play grind with vocals mat remind me of DIRT. The ELECTRO HIPPIES song is a live version of "Freddy's Revenge" which is on their LP. TALION play pretty good metal, a little to mainstream for me, a lot like DETENTE or even IRON MAIDEN. TORANAGA sound just like TALION. My main complaint is mat it only has four songs to a side, two previously released, no lyric sheet and I paid $ 10 for it You will be able to get it from Profane Existence / A.Y.F. for less really soon, it's worth it for me j songs on side A. Peaceville Records (Felix)
TROLL'S DEMO REVIEWS MEDIA CHILDREN - "Slaughter of me Innocent" demo From what I gather mis is over a year old by now. If I you've not heard of mis band, they're a punk as fuck group of anarchists who play a style of music not unlike mat of DIRT or CONFLICT with equally political and Intelligent lyrics. A bream of fresh air in here in me U S. I where me whirlwind holocaust mosh hard 'til your brain is numb style is all me rage. While most of this sounds a lot like me DIRT live EP, sounding like a boom-box recording, I still enjoy it thoroughly. CONTAGION - "Sphere of Hate" demo One of the longest four song demos in history I bet EXTREME NOISE TERROR - Peel Session 2-6-90 CONTAGION play a sort of drawn out style of power Eight songs of the blazing style of E N T. thrash we’ve all metallic and melodic H/C. Constant breaks, leads, tempo grown fond of. The mix of the recording and the changes keep this from getting boring but some of the I tightness of their playing make this orle of their best solos do tend to drag on a bit I can only wonder what the recordings - probably since their ear-shattering debut I lyrics are about as there not printed any where but I split LP with CHAOS U.K. I’m not sure if this will ever be I judging by the titles they seem to be half-serious social released on vinyl, but I'd sure hope so as it would statements. Yeah, I like itCONTAGION 29 Leslie Lane / definitely be worth getting. Eau Claire, Wl 54703
DAMAGED HOPES-demo
Seven songs here and besides the obvious boom-box recording this is a hot new band. Mixing whirlwind metallic thrash and MISERY-style grind, this band effectively captured my attention. Each song has a lot of variation to make them anything but repetitious. The vocal style is a kind of raw METALICA and the lyrics are delivered with conviction. The song titles “Blood of the Voiceless" and "Violence is no Answer" should give you an idea as to what they are about More I say - how about a live show? RESIST - "United States of Apathy" These folks started off on the right foot by getting me to like them before I even heard them - their graphics, artwork and lyrics are excellent! Musically, the tapes starts out on a song which could almost be mistaken for SUBVERT, but they do gain an identity of their own as one listens to more - most notable the lack of metal influence, just all-out H/C. HACHIMAN-demo Surprise, surprise. It seem that some people down in Mankato are tired of playing that infamous farm-core style. Featuring ex- members of TAG TEAM, IMPACT UNIT, etc. HACHIMAN are full blown DEATH METAL!
