01 Prequel Annual Exhibition for student’s work. (team: 6) BEHIND THE DESIGN. HIGHLIGHT DESIGN PROCESS. OPEN TO ALL.
Concept: A prequel is the story in the form of a book, a film or another work, that predates the events of an earlier story. For our college’s annual exhibition of students’ work, we decided to showcase the unseen part of any design- the process.
Palette: Materials: Target Audience

PREQUEL
exhibits the design thinking that goes into each project, the unseen part of the final concept. It helps the visitor understand the design philosophy of the student more comprehensively. As the target audience includes those who are not actively part of the design field, it would help them understand what ‘design’ really is.

02 Sustainable Design IGBC Green Design Competition 2011 (team: 2) SUSTAINABLE. GREEN. AFFORDABLE. RURAL/ URBAN POOR COMMUNITY
Concept: Brief (from IGBC): To design a sustainable, affordable, green school for the urban poor or rural community.

Philosophy of the school is based on: Creation of an Identity Promoting Individuality Sensitising a child as a learner To represent this philosophy, we drew inspiration from a ‘fingerprint’- the mark of an individual. The form became the basis for the school’s plan and structure. The highlight of the school is the central amphitheatre/ atrium which, symbolically, acts as the platform for students to express themselves. It is the confluence of all the activities of the school, hinting at all rounded development.

03 Retail Design: Khadi India Classroom Retail Design Project for a Brand which has become redundant today TARGET: NICHE CUSTOMER SEGMENT. KHADI: INDULGENCE, INDIAN
Concept: The brief for the project was to revive an existing brand which, today had lost its popularity, by readdressing its strategy.
Palette: Materials: Target Audience
Location Visual Board:
The main proposal for KVIC’s Khadi India, was to increase it’s Brand awareness and to create it into a STATUS SYMBOL. The location selected was the Airport stall, which caters the selected target audience, and Khadi can build upon its BRAND INDIA asset also. The stall stresses on SIMPLICITY and INDULGENCE. The outlook of the unit complements the organic and eco-friendly products being sold. The experience is built around KHADI and its EXPENSIVENESS. The unit reflects Gandhi’s philosophy on “villages being self reliant”.

04 Technical Retail Design: NIKON Classroom project to design a display unit for a brand NIKON MODULAR INTERACTIVE DISPLAY UNIT FOR MULTIBRAND STORES
Concept: The brief of the project was to design a display unit for a brand keeping in mind the mass production, transport, material considerations and structural technicalities in the concept. The Nikon unit is targeted at amateur ‘everyday’ casual photographers, to help them improve their photography, by allowing them to ‘experience’ NIKON cameras and understand the features. The unit has an interactive touch screen which is linked to the cameras displayed, such that a customer can directly view their photos, clicked against the NIKON backdrop, and understand what photography is all about, thereby making a more informed, enhanced purchase.

05 Production Design: The War Room LIVE Project for Broadvision for Mahindra & Mahindra’s ‘The War Room’(team: 6) B-SCHOOL STRATEGISING EVENT. SET FOR LIVE EVENT + TELEVISION
Palette: Materials:
Concept: ‘The War Room 2011’ is an annual televised event hosted by Mahindra every year, for 17 Business Schools across the country.
Target Audience
Location Concept sketch:
The event is a competition for students to present their business strategies for Mahindra’s companies in different sectors. The event sponsor is Broadvision, who developed the event language based on ‘Arjun- the great warrior and strategiser’. The Mahabharat plays an important role in this event as the identity highlights a sequence between Arjun and Krishna, and the award for the winning team, is the ‘brahmastra’- the greatest weapon. We worked on the set which has been inspired from the same.

06 Amphitheatre Student initiated project for College (team: 10) FORMAL/INFORMAL OCCASIONS
(proposed)
Concept: As part of a 10 member team, we had proposed an amphitheatre for college, to be used on all formal/ informal occasions. We had considered the natural landscape, acoustics, wind direction, materials, capacity, electrical supply, green room, entries/ exits, aisle and ergonomics of seating and viewing when conceptualizing. The materials complemented the white paint and Jaisalmer stone finish of the college building, and were decided according to their availability and cost. The shelter for the amphitheatre was conceived as part of a 2 member- team, class project for tensile structures.
Materials:
Plan of the amphitheatre adjoining the college building
Map of college highlighting the location of the amphitheatre (blue)
Section showing the human scale in the space
Rendered views of the amphitheatre
Overlapping curved tensile structure proposed as shelter
Close up of shelter. Curved form complements the shape of the amphitheatre. Ventilation and rain considered for the shelter.
07 Best sellers Classroom project for understanding joinery and structures. SHELVING UNIT FOR 10 BEST SELLERS IN A BOOKSTORE
Concept: The ‘best sellers’ bookcase, is as the name suggests, a book shelving system for 10 best sellers in stores. The shelf is a cascading, suspended structure pegged down at the base. It is designed so as to give more importance to the book, while the shelving remains hidden from view, making it look visually light. The structure is modular, and the number of modules depends on the retail store. The dimensions of one unit is 8” (w)x 7” (back support). The main joinery used is the box joint, which doubles as a pivot for the angle of the book.
Materials:
Detailing of the module
Single module of the bookshelf; Angled view of module; Cascading concept for the books
Close up of the model of the book display
Cascading effect of the bookshelf; Book covers visible clearly; Close up of one module
Sketches: These are some sketches using various mediums: photo inks, watercolour, dry pastels, colour pencils, graphite, pencils, gel pens etc.
Well,
I believe the projects have told you about me already, but just to complete it, I’d like to introduce myself. It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words, and if that holds true then this photograph probably bests describes me. Your probably wondering about the gorgeous dog. He and my other one, are what make me what I am. I’m an animal lover, always mesmerised by the little wonders of nature. As for the rest of it, an independent, a traveller , and an enthusiast of films, music, books and writing. I am thinker and an introvert, but not hesitant in my approach to design which I believe is a mentality, not an acquired skill. What these fours years have taught me is that if everything in life, if addressed with a design thinking, then they automatically start falling in place and creative solutions are realised. Spaces have interested me for long. That combined with the fact that I am a very proud Indian and a pahadi, working to flaunt its heritage through museums and exhibitions, would be a dream come true. - prachi joshi
