ORIGAMI- derived from Oru- to fold Kami- paper The study is an exploration of various folding techniques like creasing; pleating, tessellations to result into complex geometrical patterns and then translating the geometries of nature into different forms using the folding techniques and then further developing a mechanism for the same to achieve a dynamic model. Spirals were the main object of study and the possibilities of how a two dimensional sheet of paper can be maneuvered to achieve a three dimensional spiral are explored. Various other materials were tried and tested as a substitute for paper.Further systems and mechanisms were developed for the same spiral and was conceived as a mobile art gallery. ART HOP – the gallery would function as a hop on hop off gallery.

POLYPROPELENE Various materials were tried and tested to determine which material is best suited to pleat and fold. The various combination of materials tried were plastic, paper, fabric, starched fabric, paper reinforced with wire, fabric and paper fused etc. Then one model was tried by using acrylic, wood and cloth. The weight of acrylic would ease the movement of the flaps with cloth while coiling back. The mechanisms of the Final model was a mixture of wooden battens, elastic and fusion cloth. The material experiments aided in deciding which material would work for the flaps.

COMPONENTS: Wood battens Pulleys Nut and bolt
The nut and bolt allowed for flexible movement and pulleys eased in controlling the coiling and uncoiling. But since there were no stoppers the uncoiling motion was unrestricted and thus it failed.

Wood battens Pulleys Nut and bolt String
Wood battens Pulleys Nut and bolt String Stoppers
The nut and bolt worked as a pin joint and the stoppers and pulley worked well during uncoiling. The pulling of the string only worked to uncoil. Once the String was let loose it did not coil the spiral to its original shape. Thus the mechanism failed.
PULLEY
COMPONENTS:
COMPONENTS:
Chamfered edges help in locking the spine in place. There is no need of an overlap between the adjaccent battens, thus eliminating the use of stopper. The hinges hold the battens in place and allow for movement. The wire on the top restricts the movement thus allowing the spine to open as required. The thinner elastic thread help the spine recoil when the threads are released. The thicker elastic is put in battens which have more tension and require more recoil force. The hooks on the top are for holding the strings which control the coiling and uncoiling movements.
PULLEY
The nut bolt from the previous mechanism was replaced with the pulley. Thus the pulley worked as a pin joint as well as it aided in uncoiling the spiral.

ASSEMBLING THE UNITS
FINAL MODULE
The study of the project was based on flying patterns of starlings. A flock of starling always moves in sync with the other birds in the flock by following the principle of Alignment, Cohesion and Separation. Each bird leads 7 birds. Based on this the tetrahedron units were formed and were combined using paper joinery. The concept model was then translated into a large canopy for the Annual college exhibition. The canopy was made using 2000 tetrahedrons and each tertahedron was further made using 3 sheets of paper. Metal wire was added horizontally as adiitional support. The canopy was then suspended using steel cables.

CONCRETIA is a prefabricated housing proposal. It’s highly flexible in layout , easy to site and provides handsome high ceilings leading to natural stack ventilation. The “Basic” house for a young person or couple is 750 sq.ft. as the famliy grows with the addition of children and aging parents, the system allows for the house to grow easily at any time by adding an additional vertical module. If ever the children move out and the upper level is not required, the unit can be dismantled and reused/sold elsewhere. Turning the house back to its original size.Even if you want to move to a big city or a relaxing community on the urban periphery, the modules can be dismantled and transported with you.

The various precast house arrangements can be quickly disassembled, placed on special trucks (with individual motor driven lifts on each wheel), transported to towers and lifted into high rises. The following views show when you own a prefabricated house, you can live in a low rise community at the city periphery with views of lakes and mountains or a highrise tower at urban centres. The rise hise setup is supported by a central core where the precast RCC trusses get fixed. Modular trusses allow for the buildings to grow as per demand. In plan and elevation, the towers look more like trees than building blocks. Natural, organic, beautiful.

Cellular Fission
Arjun Rathi design// Professional Work// Kalaghoda Arts Festival 2013, Mumbai, India Design Forum 2013
‘Cellular Fission’ is a canopy structure that has been inspired from origami master, Kunihiko Kasahara’s ‘Bird Tetrahedron’ model. The canopy structure covers an area of over 150 sft, comprised of modular panels. The modules are made from a weather-resistant and eco-friendly stone paper, challenging possibilities of paper as an outdoor building material.
KALAGHODA ARTS FESTIVAL 2013
All modules are lit with an LED diode, which are controlled through a micro-controller to create patterns. The prototype was experimenting with directional graphics and we programmed the screen to display a right pointing arrow. These panels can also have a wide range of interior applications with respect to interactive lighting, space dividing systems and ceiling panels. The prototype was displayed during the India Design Week , 2013.

The Recycle
BSSA// Extra curricular// Kalaghoda Arts Festival 2013, Mumbai// TEDx NMIMS
The basic design proposal was a seating catering to the pedestrians which derived its form from The Recycle loop. The looping in the design proposal is symbolic of achieving sustainability. The extrusion of the loop thus provides the third dimension with program. The three materials that were experimented with, were paper, aluminium and white cement. After trying these materials and testing their stability against the weight they could endure, cane was used because of its stability against loading. Secondly, the material is ecofriendly and can be bent to form varying curves on heating. The thicknes of cane used is based on the load to be support. All the joineries as well as the structured framework is made purely from cane. The Cane Chair was on display for Kalaghoda Arts festival 2013,Mumbai. Kalaghoda is one of the most prominent art festival in India. It was also displayed at the TEDx Conference at NMIMS, Mumbai.
Frictional Origami
Arjun Rathi Design/ Professional Work // Kalaghoda Arts Festival 2014, Mumbai
Modular origami is a paperfolding technique which uses two or more sheets of paper to create a larger and more complex structure. Each individual sheet of paper is folded into a module, or unit, and then modules are assembled into an integrated flat shape or three-dimensional structure. These insertions create tension or friction that holds the model together. The exhibit was exploring lighting prototypes created through such frictional joinery of modular origami units. The process involved folding strips of paper into triangles which are combined to form hexagons and pentagons. The pentagonal and hexagonal modules are further joined using paper strips to create the final form.
Lamps
Arjun Rathi Design/ Professional Work // Mekong Restaurant, Palladium hotel, Mumbai// NDTV Good Homes art week 2014, Tilt All Day, Mumbai.
Mekong is a fine dining Asian cuisine restaurant that serves dishes traditionally prepared along the Mekong river, China. Exo reflects the energy of Mumbai and showcases the most extensive whiskey selection in the city. Spread over two floors, this unique high-energy club features music from a renowned DJs. Both spaces are located on the 37th level of the building and boast stunning views of Mumbai city To celebrate the Chinese new year from 31st January to 6th February 2014, the brief required installations to be designed following the theme of “The Year of the Horse and Chinese lantern inspired light. The Horse silhouette was made in MDF wood and was layered with handmade paper. The silhouette was lit from within using LED strip lights.
Table lights inspired from Sacred Geometry and Origami. The lights are folded using coloured vellum paper which would allow light to pass through. Each lamp is made using 12 sheets or 9 sheets of paper. A total of 450 lamps were folded by empowering women. The lamps are battery operated and use a LED light source. The base is hand bent metal base which incorporates the switch for operating the lamp. These were also exhibited for NDTV Good Homes art week at Tilt All Day- A lounge in Mumbai.

Origami Mosaic
Professional Work //Attempt for Limca Book Of Records 2015// Mumbai
The attempt was for the largest origami mosaic. It will soon be featured in Limca Book Of Records 2015. The mosaic is made using the bird tetrahedron unit by Kunihiko Kasahara. There were total 50 particpants. It was an effort to empower housewives. The mosaic was made by folding the sheets and combining it to form tetrahedrons. The tetrahedrons were further joined to make a panel of 25 tetrahedrons. These panels were numbered and stored in boxes as per the design. The whole mosaic was assembled in 20 man hours by uning the panel made earlier. The total time taken for preparation of modules and tetrahedrons is approximately 4 months. 155 ft

Paper Installations Professional Work // 70s Event Media Group, Mumbai
70s Event Media Group is a leading event management company in India. They experiment with a lot of paper installations and decor for their events. The brief required to create temporary installations for the living room of the client for the purpose of one of the ceremonies of a pre wedding function.Since the client is an avid reader the design was built around the concept of recycled books, novels and paper were folded to create forms for the installation. A free standing structure was created to support a combination of folded books and origami tessellations. Few books were cut into shapes and folded to create vases, postcard and stationary holders. The other installations included large paper flowers of about 2’ diameter for a stage display. These were made using Duplex paper and supported with large pipes at the bottom.

The point of study for the studio was light and shadows. The concept started from the way the same object gives different shadows due to the change in the direction of source of light. The same principle was used to make the pavillion. Experimental models were made using paper and folding techniques to understand light and shadows. The site was the open space in the college campus. The pavillion became a multifunctional space with various programs like caferteria, exhibition space etc.

Origami Elephant Professional Work // Reliance BIG Cinema
Origami elephant : Designed by John montroll and folded by Himanshu Agrawal, Saleem Bhatri and Prachi Sanghvi. The project was done for Reliance Big Cinemas as a part of environment day display. It was made using a single sheet of packing paper measuring 25 feet by 25 feet. The base sheet was prepared by pasting 5 rolls together. The total height of the model is 7 feel and its length is 10 feet. The final model was covered using old movie posters to give it a colorful look. The other side of the model was kept as is to accentuate the folds. The model is supported by a frame work of aluminium framework .Heavy metal weights are put at the base to prevent it from toppiling over.
