Abstract

An unhealthy connection between the urban & rural contexts of India is observed that leads to brain drain of a mass population resulting in imbalanced dependencies. The self-sufficient functioning of a rural context is observed to be on the edge of its declination due to these arising dependencies. A decentralized system is inferred to act as a catalyst to uplift the resourceful management of the rural context as is also discussed & preached by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

Approach

Sindhi Sirasgaon, a community in west of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar [Aurangabad] is studied as a live case of the discussed issues of imbalanced dependencies. The aim is at framing a system at policy level to eventually support & imply the same in the form of a Village Industry that initiates the flow of circular economy within the community for the self-sufficient functioning.

Additionally, two households [nearing dilapidation] of differing economic backgrounds are analysed & proposed with re-designing ideas that align with the principles of self-sufficiency & circularity.

At a macro scale, the village industry aims at catering to the socioeconomic aspects of the community, whereas at a micro scale, it aims at responding to the observed patterns of activity & occupiability in the immediate context, hence breaking down the physical barriers by curating habitable buffers.

Imbibing the sense of a lifstyle on the paths of abundance can be rooted down by reviving the true idea of a rural household, that suffices itself on needs by a strategic resourceful management within its functioning. Two households are chosen based on the differing economic backgrounds so as to have diversity in the proposals considering the change in ownerships. R

AS A CATALYST

A single storey house, near to dilapidation, is seen as an opportunity, where in a govt. policy can make a pivotal act to provide a habitable household through the medium of its rural housing schemes.

The 300 year old Wada is close to its dilapidation & is in early stages of being re-constructed by the family in a “modern” day approach using concrete.

The re-designing proposal aims at reviving the essence of the traditional methods, adjacently responding to the aspirations of the user as interviewed, for a coherent solution.

Project Brief

A social housing scheme is to be proposed in a hot & arid climate context, to be designed through the lenses of thermodynamics, ecosystemic structures, optimized energy & water systems & resilient envelopes.

Approach

Aswan being a culturally & architecturally rich site, the design is driven by locally responsive decisions, be it in planning or materiality. Adjacently a conscious effort is made to provide a contemporary touch using the traditional principles. The design aims at achieving a harmonious balance between the conventional spatiality in the residences & an unorthodox open planning for the commercial component.

The construction assembly responds to the context consciously by using Earth as a primary material. Additionally introducing Timber alongside aims at exploring a new material in the context as an alternative to mass use of steel.

Apart from the materiality of the project, details also finds its base on the traditional observations of the context - [catenary] arches, jack arches & dome being the key elements. Although, usage of interlocking & hollow earth blocks with steel plates at regular intervals talks for the unconventional ways of responding to the context, in order to achieve a balance between the scale of the project & thickness of the walls.

MO.CA. - Mobile Cabin

“Mobility” as a keyword forms the base of the brief. Considering the present day emergence of RVs in Europe, the project demands for a solution that responds to this aspiration in a ecological manner with also providing the project a modern touch. Timber being a locally sourced material, is mandatory to be used as a primary material.

Project Brief Approach

Mobility brings in the factor of connections in a literal sense. The same is taken ahead as a driving element of the design that aims to morph itself in network patterns. Materiality of the project governs the ecological aspects right from the origin of a tree to its end of life. Mobility puts a restriction on weight of the built which eventually curates the assembly of the structure in terms of members & their dimensions.
