Greetings and welcome to the 35th Annual Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant hosted by the Eta Gamma and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to this momentous occasion Frederick V. Roberts at Prairie View A&M University. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded on December 4th, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University, as the first black intercollegiate fraternity for college men. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. continues to be a steadfast force in serving all sectors of society with its programs, i.e. Go To High School, Go To College, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Brother’s Keeper, Project Alpha, Boy Scouts, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant. The Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant, created in 1976, is a national program and an outgrowth of the long-standing tradition of Alpha Chapters designating outstanding young ladies as "Chapter Sweethearts". The Pageant serves as a training ground to develop and enhance young women into progressive and productive citizens, while providing scholarship opportunities to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. Over the past few months the contestants have prepared and rehearsed to deliver a dynamic show to remember. This experience and the friendships they have developed will last a lifetime. We thank these young women for their participation in this pageant and wish each of them much success in their future endeavors. We are most grateful to and proud of last year’s pageant winners – Z’Nae Mangum, Miss Black & Gold Eta Gamma and Melanie Hollis, Miss Black and Gold Epsilon Tau Lambda. These young women competed in the Miss Black and Old Gold Texas in 2020, with both being named to the top seven, and Z’Nae being named 2nd Runner-up. Incidentally, Z’Nae was selected Miss PVAMU 2022, Kala Washington and Melanie Hollis and First and Second Runners-up, respectively. We are hopeful that the ladies will follow in that winning tradition! To the parents, families and friends of our contestants, we thank you for all that you have done to support the contestants. Your unwavering dedication and commitment to their personal and professional growth has helped them to be in the position they are today. We also thank the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Eta Gamma and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapters. Thanks also Z’Nae, Melanie, and Kala Washington for their assistance with the ladies in their preparations; and to the administration and staff of Student Engagement, the Memorial Student Center, and the Recreation Center for their contributions. We are indeed grateful for their support in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic and its variants. Welcome to the 35th Annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Competition and to Prairie View A&M University. The brothers of the Eta Gamma and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are pleased that you were able to attend this wonderful event. We trust that you will enjoy the pageant as eleven of the most intelligent, dynamic and progressive women at the university compete for the title of Miss Black and Gold 2021-22. In spite of the pandemic of COVID-19 and its variants, we believe that it was important for us to keep the tradition of selecting winners for our TCAC District Convention in Sugarland, Texas. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded by seven black men attending Cornell University in Ithaca, New York December 4th 1906. These men not only transcended the people of their time, but they left a legacy of developing leaders, making changes in our communities and promoting academic excellence. We develop the youth and even adults through our excellent programs such as: Go to High School Go to College, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Brother’s Keeper, Project Alpha and the Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant. The first Miss Black and Gold Pageant was held in 1976 during the Alpha General Convention in New York City with Miss Denise Smith winning the first title. The pageant is an outgrowth of the long tradition of our Fraternity’s designation of outstanding young ladies to serve as role models for the university and our communities. This pageant takes its winners from the local level to the district, regional and even national levels. Throughout the past few months, the women have been working vigorously to make sure they give you an incredible performance. No matter how far any of the contestants go in pageant, we know they will be successful in all of their endeavors and will always have a special place in our hearts. We would like to thank the families and friends of the contestants. Without your love, support, and dedication to seeing them succeed, we would not have these young ladies to call our queens. We would also like to thank the brothers of the Eta Gamma Chapter and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We would like to give special thanks to Brothers Frederick Roberts, Stephen Price, Lynn Smith, Wiston Ocoro, Marus Spradley and Herbert Thomas; Miss Z’Nae Mangum, Miss Melanie Hollis and Miss Kala Washington for their services. Your contributions have been tremendous to the success of the pageant. Your commitment, passion and dedication are priceless, and we thank you for everything you have done. On behalf of the Eta Gamma and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., We welcome you, the students, administration, families and friends to our event and thank you for making it a success.

Two years ago I decided to give back to my community by being a food pantry participant I met the most beautiful people here and it felt good to know I was doing something good for my city, Dallas, TX.
Family is the most important thing to me. We have our ups and downs but I know they have my back no matter what. This picture was from last year at my second brother’s graduation. My mother Ashlea (middle) and my younger brother Amari (far right). I dedicated this night to them to show them anything is possible and facing your fears is a huge accomplishment.
My whole life I have cheered and doing this pageant was a new thing for me to prove to myself I am more than a cheerleader. And I am so much more.
Last summer I took the time to travel America to coach younger girls and I have to say it’s the best thing I have ever did.
Sydnei Williams
I have been a McCowan cheer coach for about 7 years and this is something I love to do...meeting new girls every year and watching them become successful and become wonderful students is how I know I did my job. I thank my sixth grade reading teacher Ms. King for helping me become who I am today.
