Roberts February 13, 2014 The men of St. Francis of Assisi will hold its Men’s Prayer Breakfast on February 22, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall on 204 Dooley Street. The breakfast is in its sixth year of presenting speakers to address pertinent issues in the community. In a salute to Black History Month this month’s Event will feature the famed Charles Gilpin Players of Prairie View A&M University. The players will perform “His Story Speaks” highlighting the legacies and contributions of the poet Langston Hughes, The Freedom Riders and more great men form American history. The production is directed by Dr. Cristal C. Truscott, Interim Department Head, Music &Theatre and Assistant Professor and Director at the university. Members of the public are also invited to the Christian Education and Bible Study at the church every Friday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Come learn the word and share in the fellowship. In preparation for Lent, the public is invited to the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m. and the Ash Wednesday, March 5 services at 6:00 p.m. at the church. This weekend all roads lead to the Katy Western Hotel for the members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapter and Eta Gamma Chapter to participate in the 50th Anniversary Convention of the Texas Council of Alpha Chapters on February 14-16. The delegation will include chapter presidents Brian Rowland and Prentiss McGary, vice presidents Mark Spivey and Ameer McMillan and the Miss Black and Gold Contestants Briana Clark and Nadia Greer. Both Chapters are expected to compete in several competitions. It’s left to be seen whether the Eta Gamma Chapter will reclaim some of its glory days of chapter of the year, following a four year hiatus at the university. It’s election time in the City of Prairie View and Waller County! Early voting begins February 19-20 from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. for Precinct 3 Voters at in the Parish Hall of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 2014 Dooley Street. The primary election is on March 4 and if needed, the runoff election will be on April 28 from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. at the church. Candidates for Precinct 3 Judge include the incumbent Judge Elaine Marian Jackson, Jonathan Randle and Marvin Hood; for county judge Sylvia Cedillo and Sam Eng. Candidates for the Prairie View City election are still being determined. The incumbents Mayor Frank D. Jackson and Council members Simeon Queen and Herbert R. Thomas are expected to seek reelections in the upcoming elections. February is American Heart Month, and a time to raise awareness about heart disease and to educate the public on ways we can live heart-healthier lives. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States and with preventative care this disease can be eradicated. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. Make a

The Prairie View Retired Teachers Association, Ann Preston Unit will hold its monthly meeting on February 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 204 Dooley Street. The organization was founded on January 31, 1968 and led by Mrs. Anne C. Preston, founder. Interested persons are invited to attend. Mrs. Joyce Thornton is the president. The Prairie View Chamber of Commerce will hold its meeting on Thursday, January 24 at 6:00 pm in the George E. Higgs Alumni Headquarters. Tempton MSC Ballroom. More than 100 employers from corporate America, government and nonprofit agencies, and educational institutions will be available to hire students for full and part-time positions. Students will also have an opportunity to apply for internships. The Prairie View A&M National Alumni and the Collegiate 100, Epsilon Gamma Iota and Phi Beta Lambda are assisting the Center with pre-career fair workshops on resume writing, interviewing and dressing for success. Prairie View A&M University is now accepting nominations for its 2014 Humanitarian Awards to be presented during the May 10 Commencement Exercises.
