An Original Short Story - The Young Prince who Chased the Kite “Look! There’s a kite in the sky!” exclaimed the children in the park. The children were all excited to see a low flying kite. They quickly hold up their hands high to grab it. It was a colorful kite. “It is mine!” shouted the fat boy, pushing others away from his target. “It is mine!” yelled another girl. “Whoever gets it is the owner!” said the boy in spectacles. While the children were trying hard to get hold of the kite, a gust came by and the kite flew higher and further. Everyone was disappointed and began to get back to his/her game or chatting, except one little boy, a 10 years old boy. Yes, he is the male lead in our story – the young prince, Calvin. Calvin was an ordinary looking boy. No one would expect him as a special person. However, Calvin came from the royal family.

He is the young prince who would be

ascending the throne when he grew up to 21 years old. Calvin’s life was planned out before he was born. He was supposed to be the king in due course. He always came to this park alone, without the royal guards. He had always enjoyed this moment. At around 5 p.m., he would then get back to the palace for dinner routinely. Calvin looked up into the sky and started to run. He ran and ran, following the kite. The kite seemed to ignore the presence of the boy. It flew past the crowded market and flew across the river. Calvin did not give up. He continued his chase, running along the crowded streets where many hawkers were busy doing their business. Someone called him, but Calvin did not stop. He ran across the bridge. Sometimes, he would look up to the sky, to be sure that he did not lose the sight of the kite and that he was on the right track. Sometimes, he would look around to ensure that there were no guards around the premise. After an hour or so chase, the kite finally decided to fall onto the beach. Probably it thought this was a nice place for Calvin to rest. Calvin was so happy. He ran and picked the

kite up. Finally, he got what he wanted by his own way. He laughed loudly. Then a little girl came and stood before Calvin. She was slightly younger than Calvin, probably by one or two years. She looked at Calvin and asked politely, “Can I have that kite?” Calvin looked at her. “I saw it falling down from the sky, I thought it fell for me”, explained the girl. Calvin looked at the kite he was holding. He smiled and said, “Then it must be yours, as you saw it falling down from the sky.” With courteous exchange of gestures, the girl left happily with the kite. Calvin looked at the shadow of the departing kite on the sand and smiled. He understood what happiness was about and how he should continue his life. Walking back to the park would take more than an hour and a half, but Calvin whistled joyfully along his way back. He seemed happier. Probably he had understood something that we do not know. Probably he would know how to change the so-called destiny. Perhaps he had accepted his fate? No matter what his future would be, the kite chasing inevitably would be an important element in determining it.
