Site design incorporating a learning environment

Performing Arts Institute

LAND-USE MAP

ACCESS MAP

Description This studio deals with designing a learning environment for higher education that explores the relationship of design and educational equity. Here, I chose to design a Perfoming Arts Institute making use of the waterfront site.

Design Philosophy The main ideology behind the design was to create a space that combines the performing arts along with the beautiful waterfront site for the public. This gives the opportunity to the students to perform in the presence of the public and the public gets a nice musical performance to experience on thier usual visit to the beautiful waterfront.

Site The site for this project is the waterfront Magazine Beach Park in Cambridge, MA. The site is bound by the Charles River by more than half of its boundary. This site provides a great opportunity to enhance the waterfront experience for the public and the users of the institute.

CIRCULATION The Primary Circulation is walk/bike path that runs through the site with various programs on either side.

EXISTING BUILDINGS The existing buildings have been incorporated in the site as they are of importance.

PERFORMING SPACES Primary - Open Amphitheater and Indoor Theater Secondary - Entry Plaza of the institution and the waterfront view point with stepped landscape

PUBLIC RECREATIONAL SPACES The public spaces are concentrated on the northern portion of the site, whereas the intstitution building is located on the southern portion.

VIEWING SPACES There are four viewpoints looking towards the Charles river.

LANDSCAPE STRATEGIES The landscape has stepped forms at certain places that provides various opportunities to design. 4

Design Features of the Performing Arts Center: 1. The Entry Plaza could also be used as a performing space exclusively for the school events. The balconies formed at each level could be used as a space for the spectators.

2. The roof of the institutional building is a green roof that continues the stepped formal language that can be observed in a lot of spaces through the site. This makes the institutional building blend in with the landscape.

View from the Charles River 3. The stepped landscape adjacent to the building provides a raised space which can be used as an extended viewing space for the Open Amphitheater. It also provides a space for the public to sit and enjoy the waterfront.

4. The Bike/Walk path that goes throughout the site, making it the primary circulation path, also enables the public to have a peek inside the institutional building. It also provides a lively experience of performances that might be happening while they are walking or cycling. 5

Architectural Studio 2 Tectonics

Cider Factory + Student Activity Center Description This studio gives an emphasis on the tectonics in architecture. This project shows a unique use of the basic construction elements - brick, concrete and glass, by creating interesting brick screen patterns on the facade of each building block, giving all three blocks have their own unique pattern. The interiors have a more simpler concrete look, with the facade side having an interesting perforated view to the outside through the brick screening.

Site Analysis: Sun and Wind Path

1. Cider Factory 2. Cafe/Bar 3. Student Activity Center

Design Philosophy The design approach for the project was to draw the public into the site and have a great experience of the spaces. The project comprises of three building blocks-Cider factory, Student Activity Center and a Cafe/Bar. The blocks are placed on the site in a way that they form a large open landscaped space creating a transition space between the cider factory and the Student Activity Center.

2. 3.

Site The site for this project is located off of the Brigham Circle, Boston MA. The site context majorly comprise of residential buildings as well as institutional buildings. The north-western side of the site has a very gloomy look, so the design also tackles that problem by having an interesting landscaped entry to the site from there.

Pedestrian Movement

Description This studio deals with the designing of a Ferry Transportation Hub, keeping in mind the site context and the process of design created through observational and visual research. The objective is to explore how the study of the building and site not only gives a clear understanding but also provides a basis for the concept of the design.

Design Philosophy The main idea of the design was to draw people within the site and provide them opportunities to enjoy the waterfront views from the site. The project also gives us the opportunity to connect the dock with the site to facilitate the public movement towards the ferries. The presence of a variety of public activities around the site provides opportunities to build a project that is not just an ordinary Ferry Transportation Hub, but one that invloves certain public activities as well, along with providing view points to the waterfront and other important locations near the site.

Site The site is located in the Boston Downtown Long Wharf Area. The site context is defined by commercial, residential and public activities on a major scale. These zones are predominated by public activities for leisure, entertainment, tourism and recreation.
