GREETINGS FROM YOUR LIEUTENANT GOVERNER!

Hello Division 18! It has been a pleasure serving and working with you all for these past four months. Meeting the majority of you has repeatedly showed me why Division 11/18c contains the most passionate and spirited Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest. With the school year coming up in a month or so, I urge you all to continue making your plans for the Key Club year and get excited for service! This year, I hope to have an excellent showing as a division at DCON 2015 and I would encourage you all to plan and begin fundraising as soon as you deem fit. I truly feel blessed for being a part of Division 11/18c and I hope to continue to work with you all this coming year. THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes—nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million—and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, together, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

SIGN FRACTURE CARE

Making a Difference Key Clubs of British Columbia and the Yukon are raising funds to support the fellowship training and research program at BC Children’s Hospital. These funds directly benefit the wellbeing of children, with an emphasis on research related to childhood cancer. What is a fellowship program? The Division of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplants offers a highquality training program to provide trainees with skills in all aspects of clinical oncology, hematology and research. They are preparing the future pediatric oncologists/hematologists who will represent the clinical work force, educators and investigators during the first quarter of the 21st Century. By contributing to the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program, Kiwanis Clubs of B.C. you will be helping to advance the promising and vital work of researchers whom are internationally renowned for their contributions to oncology research. Your contribution will help to ensure that new scientific discoveries lead to improved patient care and eventually a cure for childhood cancer. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of BC's kids.

TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of our most important fundraisers of the year. It’s the perfect opportunity for your Key Club to make a difference in the lives of women and babies around the world as we work together to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Just US$1.80—less than the cost of a bag of Halloween candy—provides a series of three doses of vaccine, which protects a mother and her future newborns. What can I say when I am trick-or-treating? Let potential donors know how important their donation is and thank them. You could say, “I am part of __(name of your school/club)_________ Key Club, and I am participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. All donations are being used to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus around the world. Every $1.80 pays for the necessary vaccines to protect a mother and her future newborns. Would you like to donate?” What is the fundraising goal for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in 2014? With the participation of all Kiwanis Service Leadership Program members, including Key Club, the goal is US$1 million for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in 2014. In order to reach that goal, we are asking all clubs to strive for protecting 555 lives and earning the 1K patch.

PRESIDENTS REPORTS ABBOTSFORD TRADITIONAL SECONDARY Not much happened this month because of the teacher’s strike but we did manage to kick start our Key Club quite well. The first thing Gaurav and I did was promote Key Club throughout the school. There were grade assemblies for four straight days and we spoke at each one to try and inform and recruit students. This did wonders for our club, as over 60 people showed up to our first meeting. Most of them were grade nines, which was a great sight to see. Then we used that first meeting as an introduction for Key Club. We told everyone what Key Club is all about, our plans for this year, and other general information. We also got all of their names down to get rough numbers on how many people we are expecting this year. The executives also managed to plan out a few events already, such as a Pancake Breakfast and Samosa Day, and we also discussed trick or treating for UNICEF. We ordered and received boxes for it as well. We’ve only had one meeting so far and still need to talk about dues. We managed to get a donation from our PAC and are talking to others to try and bring the costs down to encourage membership. Lastly we had the DCM. The officer training was extremely helpful and it was a really fun and informative meeting. We came up with some great ideas during it and it was a great way for our new members to meet other Key Clubbers across our Division. That’s pretty much everything that has happened so far. We hope to really get rolling in October. Best regards, Roop Warraich and Gaurav Sandhar

GARIBALDI SECONDARY The Garibaldi Key Club has been off to a good start this year despite the time lost because of the teacher strike. We have established a timeline for the year's events and have started working on the October events. Next Friday, October 10 the club will be having a pizza party/introduction session for students who want to become members and all of next week we will be advertising for that and inviting people to come. We decided to have this event because many members form last year could not be part of the club anymore, most of them because they graduated. Even though there have been a couple of new members this year in grades 8 and 10 joining us, the club would still like to see more members joining to help fundraise for Project Eliminate and DCON. We hope to be able to send many members to DCON this year seeing as many members last year had a wonderful time and said it was an eye-opening experience, but we also hope to raise more money than we did last year for Project Eliminate seeing as this year is the district's last year to reach its financial goal. Secondly, for October we are planning to have an October/ teacher appreciation bake sale where teachers would be given the goodies as a thank you for their constant support and the students would be able to buy them. In this way we would still be fundraising and thanking our wonderful teachers and staff.

PRESIDENTS REPORTS G.W. GRAHAM SECONDARY This past month our club was busy recruiting new members. In September our only meeting we only were able to have one meeting due to the teacher strike. We had a short orientation for our new members, then planned out what we are doing for the month of October. We will be fundraising for the Eliminate project through a teacher beep test, Halloween candy bags, and Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Our teacher beep test will be on October 23rd, and we’re hoping to have an even better turnout then last year!

ROBERT BATEMAN SECONDARY Hello everyone, my name is Anthony Miyagi and I am the President of the Robert Bateman Key Club. I would like to give a warm welcome to all the new members that have recently joined the various Key Clubs throughout our division. Despite the recent teachers strike, the executive team was hard at working prepping for the new school year; we held several board meetings with our faculty and school advisors as well as made/plastered posters throughout the school. On September 30th, we held our very first Key Club meeting and we were astounded by the number of sign ups on our very first day - 48! This is a new record for our club and we hope to continue this success in membership growth as well as commitment. For the month of October, we are focusing on our Halloween for Hunger food drive as well as Operation Christmas Child. I would like to stress the importance of The ELIMINATE Project and encourage all members to Trick or Treat for UNICEF as well. These two projects will be our primarily focus for this month, but I can assure you that behind the scenes, our executive team is planning other opportunities to service the community and help members collect volunteer hours. I would also like to thank Bateman Key Club members Atul Sriram and Wataru Ito for each attending one of the two events we offered to members in the past week. Attendance and participation is crucial for an active member and can help one develop new friendships, connections, experiences, and much more. On behalf of the Bateman Key Club Executive Board, I would like to wish all of the other Key Clubs much success for the 2014/2015 year. I hope to see you all at the next DCM!

YALE SECONDARY Due to the strike, we unfortunately had to postpone the start of Key Club. First week back we promoted it by putting posters all around the school and had our first meeting on Tuesday, September 30th. There was an amazing turn out with over a hundred people that came! One of our main goals for this year is to have the members feeling like they really belong in the group. Aside from volunteering we will try to put in time each month to just hang out and get to know everyone better. For October, we are planning to go Trick-orTreating for UNICEF up Eagle Mountain, then have a pizza party after to celebrate. We are very thrilled for what this year will bring us!
