ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO UNDERGRADUATE SELECTED WORKS | 2017-22
PRANAV ASHISH CHAUBAL I am Pranav Ashish Chaubal, I recently completed my graduation from Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture. Architecture, in my opinion, is something that develops an intangible relationship with people by generating experiences that affect users’ lifestyles on a variety of scales while simultaneously changing its context in a variety of ways. This portfolio is a curation of works over the past five years. Working on these academic and extracurricular initiatives has helped me to hone various individual and teamwork skills. I want to contribute my skill set, grow it, and continue to learn.

THE WASTE RE-FACTORY -Decentralising waste mechanisms of Mumbai city
Design Dissertation | Semester 10
Thesis Guide - Ar. Prof. Snehal Gaikwad Structure Guide - Ar. Hardik Dedhia Site - Pramod Mahajan Park, Dadar , Mumbai The dissertation research looked into the existing linear model of consumption as well as the workings of Mumbai’s centralised waste disposal system. As a result, these systems have been questioned, their implications assessed, and potentially viable techniques devised to address the concerns. The project attempts to decentralise and fragment the waste mechanism of Mumbai. The project’s purpose is to intervene at a smaller scale to address the larger issue of waste, concentrating on a neighborhood-level intervention that attempts to address the current linear consumption module. By bridging the gap between the public and small-scale semi-industrial firms, this project intends to highlight the importance of segregation at the source by turning waste disposal into a communal activity. This hybrid typology serves as a bridge between the circular model of consumption and the concept of offering a platform for consumers to engage with newer items that are manufactured from their old ones by creating a forum for them to engage with the recycled items . The concept is based on the fundamental notions of optimizing physical and visual connectivity through scale, therefore using architecture as a social messenger to raise awareness, and structurally addressing the concerns by focusing on design for disassembly principles.

Waste mechanisms in the city of Mumbai Insight into public infrastructure India currently has inadequate systems of public transport, housing, waste management, and access to public health and sanitation. ‘Public Infrastructure are the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.’ google dictionary Fig 1. infrastructure classification (Source: Author)
Paradigm shift in public infrastructure
Fig 2. Public infrastructure -Aqueducts (Source: Author)
Fig 3. Public infrastructure -Municipal Asphalt Plant (Source: Author)
Historically, infrastructure was symbol of societal progress and were associated with technological advancement and magnificent beauty. The definition of this development in the contemporary context of fast urbanization, industrialisation, and subsequent environmental deterioration is looking into including public wellbeing in the process and understanding the need for adequate public spaces as a part of the urban infrastructure. Infrastructure has been a realm where architects have not intervened much. The role of an architect in industrial or infrastructural projects remains minor or non-existent.

Fig 6. Mulund dumping ground encroachment(Source: Author)
The processing of waste has been a majorly linear system because waste has been looked at as an end result and not as a resource. In Mumbai, the garbage disposal centers (landfills) are located in Deonar, Kanjurmarg, and Mulund, all of which are located on the city’s eastern outskirts. This demonstrates how these centers are cut off from any human connectivity, whether physical or visual, rendering them virtually invisible to the rest of the city. In the current process maximum amount of waste ends up in a landfill. These landfills are loacted at the city’s fringes. Transportation of large quantities of waste accounts for spending a large amount of money. which in turn creates havoc for the people near these landfills and simultaneously causing environemntal degradation. One of the major issues of such large scale transportation activity is that it becomes difficult yo sort out waste at larger scales, hence source segregation is the most prefered way of dealing with waste.

Proposal of a decentralised module WARD -P/N Area in sqm. - 1645
Rather than collecting large amounts of unsegregated waste, then transporting them and later segregating, it should be dealt at a smaller scale. These treated and segregated waste can be used as a resource or raw material by companies or small scale industries which operate on prinicples to maximise the reuse of materials. This would look at the model of a circular economy where the concept of waste is eliminated and it is used as a resource.

The waste that is collected does not directly go to the landfill but it is transported to other facilities before it is finally taken to the landfill . The collected dry waste is taken to the Dry waste segregation centres (DWSC) where the dry waste is sorted out and sent for further processing to the respective units.

Only the segregated dry waste is brought to these interventions. The dry waste mixed with the wet waste is either directly taken to the landfills or is brought to the Refuse transfer stations (RTSs).

The case of existing waste segments There is a lack of knowledge that these segments exist within the urban fabric. These even though existing within the city have been placed in a way that there is minimum visual and physcial transaction between these spaces and the general public. Thus an attempt was made to study these existing segments with respect to their context. Selecting two DWSCs with contrasting contexts where one is secluded and cutoff from daily commute paths, whereas the other is highly accessible. Thus assessing the impact it has on the awareness of the people in its context. DWSC of P/S ward

The P-ward DWSC is physically secluded and visually disconnected from the daily life of people. The E-ward DWSC , which is more public in nature , establishes its presence both phycisally and psychologically contact with the locals on a daily basis. Hence higher rates of segregationa as high as 30% more than usual were recorded by the Mahalaxmi DWSC. 11
About the site
Pramod Mahajan Park is located in G/N ward, Dadar west near the Dadar wholesale flower market. It is located in a locale of very high influence with major landmarks around the site like the Dadar flower market, Manish market, a busy residential and mixed typology. The site is much more accessible to the pedestrians now due to the current street project that is transforming streets along the Senapati Bapat marg. The edges correspond to completely different setups, allowing the site to visually interact with both edges thus making it possible to send across the message the intervention tries to convey through the project.

02 Skill Development Centre Architectural Design | Semester 6
Guide - Ar. Mahesh Nilakh Site - Jodhpur, Rajasthan The Skill Development centre aims to produce skilled, self-supporting professionals contributing to national progress with individual expertise. This centre intends to promote ‘Gandhian Principles’ , advocate it further at various national and international levels for it to spread into the world order. Thus when designing this sensitive and intensive piece of architecture, the challenge was to understand the direct and indirect attributes of Gandhian philosophy and their relevance in the current scenario. Then acknowledging these attributes by balancing them in the architecture presented.
32
SITE AND SITE CONTEXT
GANDHIAN PHILOSOPHY
The site is located in Jodhpur,Rajasthan. It is along National Highway in vicinity with other centres of learning. Some of the centres along the highway are IIT Jodhpur, NIFT Jodhpur. There is a stone crusher and numerous brick kilns within 2km radius.
One of the main agendas of this institution related to Gandhian principles is to promote one’s skills, producing self -supporting professionals, who contribute to the national progress. Understanding the direct and indirect attributes of Gandhian Philosophy and its relevance in the current scenario and balancing of these attributes in the architectural sense. POROSITY

03 Celebrations and Business Functions Hub Architectural Design | Semester 5
Guide - Ar. Mahesh Khanolkar Site - Queens Lawn, Borivali, Mumbai The project, intensive in its approach, with varied styles, themes, conceptions and planning ideas, demanded dynamic spaces filled with aura and elegance stimulating the right environment for ‘celebrating’ memories and moments. This was to be achieved by employing inspiration and spirit of architrectural style/ concept drawn out of the design language, features and overall reflections of a famous architects practice. It was expected that the project be approached in two stages Stage 1 : This stage demanded the study of the works of some of the famous architects and lasting influences of their innovative and individualistic architectural styles. Stage 2 : Designing the project incorporating the language of a selected architect and improvising on the philosophies while simultaneously planning and creating the same spirit as that of the studied architect.
42
SITE AND SITE CONTEXT Queens Lawn is located in Borivali,Mumbai. It is located along the linking road and is in vicinity to other resorts and banquet halls . It has Eskay Resorts to its north-west, Saffron Banquets to its north-east ,Rani Laxmibai Joggers Park to the east.
SELECTED ARCHITECT Ar. Charles Correa Studying the works of Sir Charles Correa , his ideology, design approach and principles were understood which became the source of inspiration for the concept of this Celebration space. Some elements from his ideology that were translated into this design are as follows COURTYARDS

04 Street Design - Recreational Cohesion Urban Design | Semester 7
Guide - Ar. Shekoba Sanap Site - Bangur Nagar, Goregaon, Mumbai The goal was to understand and facilitate efficient pedestrian and vehicular movement while celebrating various interactions that take place on the street and preparing maps indicating the street network, figure and ground, building use, vehicular intensity and street infrastructure. The site chosen is a street in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon West. The low vehicular intensity of the street provides an opportunity for people to claim the public space for a multitude of activities such as cycling and jogging without being inconvenienced by vehicles. However, at the same time, by night, the lack of human activity creates a rather unsafe atmosphere. To cater to the above mentioned observations, the design proposes the following elements: Street Park: Transforming the street end into a park which could serve as a gathering space and recreational area. Jogging track and Seating spaces: Dedicating a zone for residents to jog ,walk and sit by segregating it from the vehicular movement. Parking Spaces: Considering the need of various user groups for parking on the street, a dedicated parking zone has been provided. Cycle track and Pedestrian Walkway: Segregating the vehicular traffic and creating a cycling loop for residents to cycle especially during evening and night hours. The overall objective of these elements is to activate the redundant and lesser used pockets of spaces on the street to serve the needs of the local residents. The idea is also to minimise any kerfuffle between pedestrians and vehicles. Infrastructural refinements such as raised pedestrian crossings, ramps, visual street dividers, curb bulbs and seating have also been introduced onto the street.

1. PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS- ensuring pedestrian safety 2. CYCLING LOOP - continuous cycling path that ensures cycler safety activited mainly in early morning and evening time. Connects to different parts of locality 3. JOGGING TRACK - Allowing for pedestrian thoroughfare and activating as a dedicated jogging, walking space in the evening for the residents. 4.PARKING SPACES - Relocation of the informal parking on the streets retaining its shade by trees on either sides. 5. STREET PARK - Treatment of the dead end of the streets by restriction of vehicular movement to allow for activites such as play , gatherings

06 Family Home at Nagpur
Professional Practice | Semester 8 | SJK Architects
Guided by - Ar. Payal Jain, Ar. Vaishali Shankar Project type - Residential Site - Nagpur, Maharashtra Site area - 922 sqm. B.U.A. - 1817sqm. The Nagpur house reinterprets the idea of a ‘haveli’ to adapt to an urban, contemporary circumstance. Designed for a traditional Indian joint family - the emphasis is to ensure a variety of semi-open and enclosed common spaces that encourage a sense of togetherness and community, spaces that can help hold a large family together. Available ground area coverage led to a G+5 storied structure, at the physical and symbolic heart of which is a ‘chowk’ that brings in light and connects different levels and spaces. The skylight above the ‘chowk’ is a ‘jali’ – crafted in wood with traditional motifs, it will help diffuse the harsh Nagpur sun in the summer months; the motifs forming ever changing shadow patterns on the walls and floor of the ‘chowk’ with the movement of the sun. The jali’s also protects the verandah’s and jharokha’s of the bedroom’s while allowing for the flexible creation of interior micro-climates through their many layers. The aesthetic that emerges is both contemporary as well as seeped in tradition and aptly represents this family, navigating 21st century India with much celebration of 3 generations living together. There are 8 bedrooms, 6 living rooms and kitchens and pantries spread across 5 floors - all wrapping around the central atrium. The 4th floor is envisioned as an independant entity in a lighweight steel framework & is used to entertain guests, comprising - formal living, dining & bar. The top 5th floor serves as an amenity space with spas, a gym & storage.

07 Courtyard House
Professional Practice | Semester 8 | SJK Architects
Guided by - Ar. Nikita Shahdadpuri, Ar. Vaishali Shankar Project type - Residential Site - Latur, Maharashtra. Site area - 39833 SQM. The Courtyard house is an ongoing residential project that takes cues from its context, which reflects in the scales, elements and configuration of the house. The wind movement guides the proportions of the courtyards enabling the spaces to be naturally ventilated and lit throughout the year. The Jaali openings as seen in the facade allow fresh air into the washrooms while also bringing in lightness to the elevation. The jaali breaks the scale of the elevation visually whereas the courtyards reach deep into the house, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.

Site - Sagar Dighi, Cooch Behar Theme - Heritage and democracy Team Strength - 19 The aim of the 2017-18 Louis I. Kahn Trophy was to document buildings / complexes/ sites which are symbols of democracy. The structures which play an important role in the smooth functioning of the government. It was expected to document such administrative structures of any era, pre Mughal, Mughal, pre-colonial, colonial, post-independence but not built later than 1967.
INTRODUCTION
COOCH BEHAR IS THE LARGEST TOWN AND DISTRICT HEADQUARTER OF NORTHERN BENGAL. IT LIES AT THE FOOTHILLS OF EASTERN HIMALAYAS UNDER THE ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION OF JALPAIGURI. IT IS THE ONLY PLANNED TOWN IN THIS REGION WITH THE REMNANTS OF ROYAL HERITAGE. IT FOLLOWS THE GRID IRON PATTERN, THE TOWN ROADS HAVE BEEN PLANNED ACCORIDNGLY MEETING AT RIGHT ANGLES. IN THE SOUTH-SOUTH-EAST END THE GRID ALLIGNS ITSELF WITH THE RIVER. THIS GRID IRON DIVIDES THE TOWN INTO 4 PRIMARY ZONES, DEMARCATING DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES OF PUBLIC AND WELFARE BUILDINGS. EACH SECTOR ENCOMPASSES A DIGHI (TANK). THE INTER RELATIONSHIP OF DIGHIS IS IN HIERARCHIAL ORDER WITH RESPECT TO PROPORTION OF ITS ZONE. LOCATED AT THE SOUTH-WEST CORNER OF THE TOWN COOCH BEHAR, SAGAR DIGHI IS THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE TOWN. IT HAS BEEN PRECISELY ALLIGNED TO THE CARDINAL AXIS. SOME OF THE MAJOR ARCHITECTURAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE DEVELOPMENTS THAT COOCH BEHAR BOASTS OF ARE SITUATED AROUND THIS TANK.

“Somewhere in-between the start of the climb and the point you reach the summit lies the mystery as to why we climb. “ My story is about this between. Once upon a time, a long time ago there was a dainty village nestled amongst the mighty Himalayas, overlooking the valley below
and guarded by the green around. But often in the final In W.T.V. 7.0, there is a focus on documenting and learning the tangible2019 and intangible aspects quarter of the year, the greens seem to disappear. A solution was must, the struggle and hope to survive they couldn’t trust. In search for a life without struggle, they took upon a journey down. Losing men and animals on the way in search of the ne3w land was often condemned, but the journey continue. Through treachourous terrains and pine forest, they settled in a place that suited what they thought would work, a winter without snow as the hardscape. Down below but still to a land where summers and winters were warm. A concern that continued. The new location proved as a challenge against the heat this time again, and it was time to move away from Rishikesh to the location in the hills that they once moved away from. The need for a perfect balance and an apt setting got them back to the place that they one startred from. The unsatisfied human mind made them move up and down, down and up. A search for a land that provided them with it all, not too cold nor too hot, where the soil is so fertile; food is never not enough, water as pure as spring water, air as fresh as the scent of a newly blossomed rose. Accidentally finding what they hoped for; searching lengths and breadths of the Himalayas, and there I was sitting and wondering.

SAUR VILLAGE DRONE SHOT
My rugged terrain was altered to create places to sow the first seeds to build the first house. In a series of firsts, a year received rainfall like no other, A sudden downpour, that destroyed anything in its path. Crumbling to regain the strength and stability the terrain was wiped of its glory, with flatter terraces, shallower slopes and suddenly created meadows. Providing my new inhabitants with land so fertile, that a variety grew through the year, reducing their dependency to the world beyond me. Years passed by the land continue to yield, sometimes even more than what they need. They finally found a place they called home. Growing and living through the summers and winters. The produce was often sold in the markets of Chamba and Mussorie. A journey uphill that sometimes wouldn’t be worth the fruit it reaped. Secluded and sitting away from the hustle bustle of the development around, what was once sought after was no longer profound. Some moved out some remained. Some new villages like me came into existence like of Jaadipaani, Sunngaon, Khurait, Pujaldi, Khakwadi. I was the seed that branched out into these settlements, with their genesis still lying here with me.

Plan 72
Geographically Saur sits in the bottom of a valley or a bowl, surrounded by hills on all four sides and a narrow stream delineating the bottom of the hills. The hills are transformed into terraced farming lands, however, the primary occupation of the people of the village is shepherding.
Believed to be of the Garhwali descent, a region encompassing the northwest of present-day Uttarakhand Saur is a village nestled amongst the Himalayas with a style borrowed from the region has variations to suit the need and adapt to the valley. Common planning principals followed through the region with alterations as per needs where animals shared a common dwelling.
The rooms in the ground floor are used for keeping their cattle or as storage rooms. The upper floor is used by the people as their habitable area. The frontyard is used as feeding area for cattle and for various other daily activities like cooking, washing clothes and vessels. The typical elements of a Saur house are small openings , small verandah projection supported on brackets, verandah posts to support roof and allow for semi-open space, small roof overhang projections. The small windows allow for minimum transfer for heat thus maintain a comfortable temperature.

A union of space and time creates an event. Event cannot individually exist without time. This pavillion is a pause in the event. The change of time transforms the space and this idea is amplified through the play of light and shadow within the pavillion and in a manner that the pavillion gets inhabited by the people. The perception of this break in the event through the passage of time is unique for each individual, thereby getting inscribed in ones memory as a moment in time.

-10MM THK (AS COLUMN AND BASIC WING SUPPORT)
The Idea
The light passing through the colours of the pavillion to create patterns on the ground that would create interest among the visitors and making them pause to take a glimpse of it.
Further working on the physical manifestation of the idea the form of the pavillion was resloved into the simpler triangular shape. Inclusion of the voids
The Process
The process begins with a PVC drainage pipe
Drilling holes to house further members
Cutting into seperate rings
This ring is the junction joining different triangles
Connecting multiple such junctions resulting into forming multiple triangles. These multiple triangles form one basic unit.
A smaller diameter pipe is placed concentric to restrict unnecessary movement
Making of the exoskeleton. Steel rod is passed through the PVC pipes framework
Inserting PVC water supply pipes into the larger ring, tieing it to the inner ring with plastic ties.
Tying the internal unit arrangment with the PVC pipe framework on the exoskeleton
The columns are place on site.
The wing units are installed on the columns.
The coloured acrylic sheets are tied to the triangular units with the help of plastic ties.

Sai Baba Temple Design Competition (2020)
Site - Patalpani Waterfalls, Madhya Pradesh Team - Jeel Patel, Priyal Vasaiwala, Pranav Chaubal Indore being a second tier city in India, is on its way to becoming a Smart city with many conservational and heritage projects on its way. Traditional Nagara style temples are already prevalent in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Thus, a contemporary interpretation of the same Nagara Temple would be an addition to the tourist attraction in the city whilst establishing a modern language of religious architecture in Northern India. Sai Baba identified himself with not only people but with everything that nature provided. Similarly the chosen site- Patalpaani Waterfalls, is at a decent altitude from the mean sea level and in an isolated lush green tranquil setting. It is ideal for a peace giving spiritual abode for pilgrims who look forward to connecting with nature. Patalpaani Waterfalls is an existing tourist attraction about an hour away from the city of Indore via a good network of roads. This temple will not only enhance the experience of the waterfall but also turn into an iconic landmark for tourism in the city and state.

The void in the design under which thee idol sits, is a representative of Sai Baba’s detachment from the idea of following a particular religion and shows that he didn’t belong to one. He sits in a neutral unbounded space that seamlessly connects upto the sky. The void provides a view of the waterfall behind the idol establishing a connect between nature and devottee. The design is a modern take on religious architecture as a parametric form. The extensive ornamentation in the form of repetetive carvings on the traditional Nagara style temple have been broken down into simpler grid of members that add depth to the space underneath.
