THE URBAN COURTHOUSE
PROJECT: DESIGN STUDIO - M.ARCH - SEM 3 - FALL 2023 TYPE: COURTHOUSE - PUBLIC BUILDING SITE: WHARF DISTRICT, STAUNTON, VA
MANIFESTO The UrbanCourtBlock is a Courthouse that fills in the Warf District’s blank space and enhances its engagement—turning the public building more public and becoming the catalyst for tourism, History, culture, and entertainment in Staunton. The mass blends with the surrounding buildings, also addressing the severe flooding issues. The importance of the courtroom can be visualized from the streets. Wrapping the volume with an accessible roof gives people and tourists an excellent vantage point from which to view the historic skyline of Staunton City. “A building has at least two lives – the one imagined by its maker and the life it lives afterward – and they are never the same.”

The Final Outcome, H2O Towers!
MANIFESTO This architectural design takes into the Highrise architecture. Our aim is to give affordable housing a premium experience and foster collaborative thinking to further drive residential, recreational and retail experience. By closing the gap between mixed-use buildings and leveraging greener commercial buildings integrated with housing which helps the community grow and nurture occupant’s mindset. By using the site ground level as a cross pass way that is taken from the surrounding streets as an extension to make the site belong to the neighborhood in some way. Which creates a welcoming space on the ground with a landscape park and commercial shops that will benefit the surrounding neighborhood as well as the towers residents. “Architecture adds dimensions to my life that would be impossible to acquire if I retired. The beautiful thing about architecture is that every project is brand new. I am forced to renew myself with every project.” - CESAR PELLI
We believe in giving 110% back to the community by responding to their needs. By using energy efficient building methods for the project, this will help commercial businesses grow. Adding to the New York’s skyline with its Iconic footprint. Our vision was, “Iconic design will come from proactively transforming and how we pursue it.”

STAGE 1 We are placing rectangular blocks on-site depicting the building mass. The site is narrow, so maximizing the building area with regulation.
STAGE 2 We are squeezing the bottom of the building to create additional ground area because the site is narrow because of the enormous mass of the structure, creating a puncture to reduce the visual weight of the building.
STAGE 3 Creating punctures also allows wind to pass through it, creating less load on the highrise, and turning it into a public space will be an excellent feature for people to take a spectacular view of the downtown.
STAGE 4 Placing all the crucial areas on the ground and adding the final touches. The building’s wedge shape helps to avoid the harsh rays of sunlight entering the building. Also, an additional central cutout gives the building a unique look at the context.
MANIFESTO
Physical Model
To achieve the best outcome so had to start with the basics. The circulation and orientation of pedestrians are critical elements in planning because, without them, the project will not achieve the desired synergies and sense of place, which are the hallmarks of promising mixed-use developments. This second characteristic distinguishes mixed-use developments from multi-purpose developments that may include three or more essential uses that generate income but do not integrate them. For example, such reduced intensity and more dispersed developments could include low-density planned communities and business parks, which may include a variety of uses, but whose density and physical integration tend to be significantly lower than the mixed. Using developments resulting in a less regular interaction between uses and greater use of cars for movement within the project.

We are placing a contemporary cuboidal highrise building mass in the city.
The form is inspired by an idea to transform and reinvent the regular tall building mass and intervene inside the borders of a traditional orthodox form.
The structure begins with retaining the original border and carving out chunks of masses from the block.
The resultant block now has various voids acting as terraces and sky gardens, creating unique space high up in the sky.
MANIFESTO The project is conceived as an amalgamation of buildings, embracing various systems, demographics, programs, and activities. The building manifests the complex nature and needs of the site into a built form, resulting in a chain reaction of unexpected events and situations. To further this concept, the means of vertical movement have been varied. To avoid the mistakes in the planning – “The fact that city blocks serve no purpose other than as space to pass is the eponymous character of the urban corridor.” Programs and activities are exposed and closely juxtaposed to weave an intricate network of public spaces that every journey between levels becomes a spectacle on its own. This act of extreme juxtaposition of abjects can take mundane ingredients found in Mumbai and elevate them to the state of fantastic. This notion of paracosm may offer a fresh perspective and awareness in the mundane Everything we design is a response to the specific climate and culture of a particular place.

built environment. It illuminates new and readily lost possibilities of plural, sensationpacked ‘heterotopia,’ which begins with architecture’s active contribution to the urban experience, and the inter-relationships between architecture and urban scenarios generate numerous narratives.Traditional mixed-use buildings erase individual programmatic quality by assimilating programs into a single architectural identity through homogeneous facade treatment and integration of scale. This act is viewed as bleaching of a myriad of characters and a loss of rich experience.
30 | BUILDING SYSTEM
LATERAL LOAD AND STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
SUSTAINIBILITY
Vertical Zonning
An average tall building uses only its roof as the water catchment area for rainwater harvesting. The new innovative form creates multiple terraces and large flat surfaces throughout the building, thus increasing the catchment area 4 times that of an average building. The structural concept for the building has been considered and developed to achieve the best architectural vision for the project, balancing between the ease of construction and cost. A steel frame system is implemented to expedite the construction, and prefabricated open web steel joists allow a potential complex structural arrangement to be realized efficiently. A deep foundation is used to counter the vertical cantilever due to the height of the building. The overarching structural scheme is a collection of structurally autonomous blocks skewered by standard cores and columns strategically braced by horizontal program blocks. These blocks spanned between multiple cores and were braced with exposed mega trusses. Each program block has its own floor plate, ceiling height. This begins with retaining the original border and carving out chunks of masses from the block. The resultant block now has various voids acting as terraces and sky gardens, creating unique space high up in the sky. These rooms are scaled between urban and architecture, enabling new public strata for interaction and meeting visitors and inhabitants alike.
