ABOUT
Surat is one of the major commercial and economic centre in South Gujarat, which is famous for its diamonds and textile industries; and as a shopping centre for apparels and accessories. As an academic exercise, brief was to design a public institution and revamping the existing public library which was built in 1991. The site is located on Ghod Dod road, which is one of the most prominent and historical street of Surat city, located in a peaceful zone, free from industrial pollution and noise of heavy traffic. The building sits in the halcyon surrounding, amidst residential and commercial blocks, educational & public institutions and public parks. So the students of schools & colleges and book-loving citizens can take maximum advantage of the reading facilities
IDEA
Looking at the interesting dense fabric of the neighbourhood, the vision is to create an iconic building which acts as a multi-purpose hub within the neighbourhood providing an unique environment to the city. The program revolves around the public library with the addition of some co-working spaces, public gathering spaces, recreational spaces and office spaces for rent/lease. The ideas is to create an open site for public to work, stroll, eat, play and read. Hence, promoting educational, recreational and social interactions in the city.

The project is divided into 3 major zones, Art & Literature, Recreational and Admin/Office zone. The entire site is laid according to this 3 zones on the ground and then connected with bridges on upper floors to create connection and drama within the circulation of the entire project. The zoning and programming of the spaces is done vertically and horizontally. Recreational zone which houses cafés, restaurants, gaming zone and co-working spaces is being placed right on the intersection of the roads as it is acting as a public zone. Art & Literature zone which houses library, exhibition spaces and auditorium is placed to the southern side of the side as to make it a little private zone, cutting down the noise of the surrounding. Admin/Office zone which houses administration, office spaces and conference spaces is placed to the western side of the Recreational zone abutting main road, as to provide office spaces an advantage of being on one of the main street of the city. The building is challenging the context by having curvilinear faces and staggered terraces, making it unique and stand out in the context. All this programs are interlinked and interconnected individually with their respective blocks and are also connected with bridges and plazas at different levels. The project houses 2 major plazas where one of it acts as entry plaza which is situated on the ground floor with an auditorium and a small garden in the Art & Literature zone for reading, book launch, music night and social gathering purpose, and other one acts as sky plaza on second floor connecting all the blocks for leisure purpose.

14
Driven by function, the building’s form is expressed in its own beauty to create not only a landmark public structure but also creating a catalyst drawing people and activity, beautifully connecting all strata of society. As the found floor plan reads, the open floor for people to stroll with no security boundary, connecting adjacent roads boldly with internal pathways, providing spaces to enjoy micro-climate of the building with water-bodies, green spaces, gathering spaces will mark the new vision of conceiving public buildings in the city where people can use the ground. As seen in sections, green terraces, bridges, plazas, staircases, with different volumes highlights the drama of spaces and connections within the buildings. Hence, providing the city a new place to engage by revamping the old library site and adding new spirit to the city of people, making this place a thriving urban space.

ABOUT Ahmedabad is the largest city and former capital of Indian state of Gujarat. It has emerged as an important economic and industrial hub in India and the historic part of the city is also declared as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage city. As an academic exercise, brief was to select one of the area/neighbourhood of Ahmedabad, analyse it’s precinct, find key sites to develop, then deriving to a master plan and propose urban inserts. We selected the business district area of the city NAVARANGPURA, based on the historical and institutional background of it’s precinct. NAVARANGPURA is situated in western region of Ahmedabad connected with the historic precinct with two major old bridges and runs along 120 ft. ring road. This region has well known educational and research institutes, along with the oldest known business districts. The University area is occupied by known institutions of Ahmedabad which includes four main universities Gujarat University, CEPT University, National Institute Of Commerce and Indian Institute Of Management. University area being one of the biggest green area in the city attracts people for morning and evening walks within its internal roads and campuses. The area is an employment market that provides jobs to different hierarchy and having large and oldest commercial streets and districts, it caters to great number of people. The area also falls under transit oriented zone due to upcoming metro and thus more public density is occupied or seen in this area. Also, there are many historic tourist attractions in navrangpura like some old office buildings and few temples. All such aspects makes navrangpura activity oriented area. Chimanlal girdharlal road, colloquially the C. G. Road, is one of the major roads of Ahmedabad named after one of the major businessmen of the 1960s in India. It has been ranked as the costliest retail location in the city and in 2010, it was ranked in “Main Streets Across the World 2020”.

The master plan aims to trigger potential areas with low economic group - GULBAI TEKRA, an upscale commercial street - C.G.Road and a new public spot - RIVERFRONT, to catalyse the growth socially, economically and culturally to increase the liveability of the mixed use suburb NAVARANGPURA.
SPOT LEVEL INTERVENTION Refurbishment of Municipal Market to cater the present day requirements of C.G Road. The demographic growth of the city and the area has led to commissioned the market with the public car park for daily needs of the users.
NEIGHBOURHOOD LEVEL INTERVENTION Refurbishment of Municipal school with the addition of community centre and community park. The insert shall benefit the 100 years old community to sustain in this locality with required amenities targeting all the age groups from small child to older people. The community hub shall provide this settlement a better platform to work, earn and continue their culture of making seasonal idols of Gods and also providing them leaning centre. The community park shall provide them a free open space with shaded avenues to spend their leisure time and rickshaw stand for men of the community. The Municipal School shall benefit younger generations like kids to have a better learning environment and women’s to have a job.
NEIGHBOURHOOD/CITY LEVEL INTERVENTION City Sales and Commerce Centre is proposed right next to metro station and 132 ft ring road which focuses to create a shift in growth from C.G.Road and provide opportunities to people coming from retail, business and financial background in search of office spaces and retail stores on C.G.Road. This will help to catalyse the new area and create a balanced condition.
CITY LEVEL INTERVENTION Urban Collage is proposed on riverfront to provide multiple uses to the developing city that can adapt to the needs of its surroundings, supports the sustenance of neighbourhood business and also help in bringing the unique character and culture of the city in one place. Hence making it an epicentre for socio-cultural and tourist activities.
IDEA The idea is to make a vertical city organized by horizontal layers and programs, each one connected to each other through perforations and void challenging the typical typology of cultural centre which will establish a stronger connection with existing river on every level and will also cater the socio-cultural growth of the city. This development will focus on three major sectors: - CULTURE - ART & LITERATURE - RECREATION 22

A new cultural center in Ahmedabad embodies and catalyzes the cultural scene over the Sabarmati Riverfront forming a new attraction for the city. The building groups different facilities: a museum, a exhibition space, a library, a music cell, an office space for heritage and tourist control, a hotel and an auditorium. These seven programs need a close relation with the outside but they have to share the same common floors provided on certain intervals. This becomes a social place, permeable and active which connects the surrounding city with the building and the river. The result is a collage of different programs, a sequential promenade of urban episodes.

The building includes a series of alternate solids with peripheral balconies that are combined with alternate transparent spaces. The addition of solid curvilinear faces and slabs transitioning to open floor plan in the centre gives the building its dynamic force. The sky gardens and public plazas at certain intervals evokes the ascension into public promenades, allowing to wander the building and at the same time serving as a podium and terrace to display certain works of art; this possibility extends from the inside out, becoming an external tour and concluding with a panoramic terrace, the floor space to exhibit, contemplate and communicate, creating a walk overlooking historical part of the city with the pleasing views of riverfront. Hence making it the ultimate destination for people in neighbourhood, in the city and people coming from various region which will help to bring in people of all age group where they can participate, learn and engage to different activities.
CURVILINEAR SLABS GIVES THE BUILDING UNIQUE CHARACTER AMONGST OTHER HIGH RISE BUILDINGS, BREAKS THE RIGIDITY OF THE BUILDING AND ALSO HIGHLIGHTS RECREATIONAL SPACES.

ABOUT The goal of this thesis is to explore the agricultural sector as a manifestation of a set of social and environmental conditions that is no longer practiced as efficiently as our ancestors. The present country dwellers have opted to seek convenience in populated areas instead. This along with the lack of infrastructure and technology has led to the a agricultural crisis in India.
THESIS STATEMENT As cities begins to spread and eat arable lands of its surrounding, it brings into question where all of these farmers will go, how will there be a connection between rural and urban? How will we educate our people regarding agriculture? How will we meet our food security requirement? And where all of these small agricultural pro-ducers will meet the urban consumer? These changes offer the opportunity of a new way for urban dwellers to interact with agriculture and their food system. A new model to facilitate this interaction can reflect the relationships of local food production through a hybrid live, learn, work, play environment that incorporates the strongest assets of current access to agriculture and its local food.
PROJECT BRIEF Aim is to design an Agro Research and Tourism Park, where the project serves to be an ecosystem that contains sets of social and economic activities and links travel with experiencing agricultural products and services, helping to foster innovation, knowledge sharing and interaction between local and urban people using art and architecture as the medium, which will be the centre for food and agricultural innovation. It will also serve as a self-supporting model to promote the production, retention and expansion of agriculture, organic farming, horticulture, post harvesting processes, etc., for the benefit of local economies, and will also maintain the sustainable processing techniques, which will help promote agricultural sector.

Section is cutting through visitor centre, horticulture farm, fish pond, cash crop farm and accommodation block with the back drop of ‘The Sqaure’which connects all these programs together. View A shows Visitor Centre right next to the parking, as a visitor enters the campus and park their cars, this is the first built mass which welcomes them by it’s huge scale hidden behind the entrance landscape. The building functions as two different entities serving the purpose of educating and experiencing about the biggest asset of our country “AGRICULTURE’. The building is strategically placed on the southern side of the campus with it’s large footprint giving no views of the inside campus. To achieve this, building mass is kept rigid which merges with the hardscape and landscape of the entrance plaza, making an individual feel curious about what is inside. The building starts as a visitor centre and slowly evolves as a museum taking the visitors from different sets of spaces which are meant to make them realise that how important is to focus on agriculture. View B shows ”THE SQUARE’ over the entertainment zone and fish pond giving the entire view of the establishment and also connecting all the programs together. View C shows Accommodation block on the other side of the site located in education and research zone which will provide accommodation to students and researchers. 36
37
Section is cutting through lakefront, dining, arena, fish pond and agricultural field. All these areas are public space for people to have experiential journey in the field. View D shows promenades and bridge over the lake, where people will end their agricultural journey with a boat ride in the lake and will enjoy the sunset by the lake. Promenades will be also used to host festivals, exhibitions, road side markets and many more. View E shows entertainment zone where visitors can dine, chill, interact with farmers, enjoy concerts, participate in workshops and festivals happening in the arena. This zone is created right in the centre of the campus covering with fruit orchards on two sides and fish pond on the other. Dining has 3 different kitchens, 2 made of wooden structure and 1 of concrete with steel structure housing sitting, creating a distinctive functional zones, 2 kitchens are based on Indian and continental cuisine using fresh produced vegetables, herbs and dairy products from the farm giving the best ‘Direct from farm’ & ‘U-Pick’ experience. 3rd one is a public kitchen where visitors can pluck and buy fresh goods and cook food for themselves in this serene environment. The deck acts as an outdoor dining area facing fruit orchards below the canopies of the trees. This provides a perfect dining experience after taking a long walk into the field. View F shows a bridge landing on the corn field marking half day tour of the establishment with the background of research zone where there is research facility, barns and processing unit. 38
39
The zoning of the chicken coop and cow stable is done specifically in the research and education zone as to have a complete watch on the barns. The barns are placed adjacent to the 10m wide internal road which makes the transportation and servicing easier for both the animal shelters and also provides a large space for chickens and cows to roam around which beneficial for their healthy life. The idea of introducing these animal shelters were to make a self supporting agriculture model which can run on the principles of integrated farming system and can also be a model which can be used by farmers of nearby villages.

ARUN JAITLEY MEMORIAL_LANDSCAPEINDIA
| M/s PRABHAKAR BHAGWAT
ROLE : Design coordination, making working drawings & 3D model, coordination with CNC and marble vendors
ABOUT Born in 1952, the late Shri Arun Jaitley was many things - Union Minister for Finance, Minister of Corporate Affairs, Minister of Defence, Minister of Information & Broadcasting, and Union Minister for Law & Justice. Landscapeindia was commissioned by Lodha group to make a memorial of Shri. Late Arun Jaitley on Peddar Road, Mumbai. AIM Aim was to create a space that embodies simplicity and clarity, while making clear the contributions of a multi-faceted man to the development of India.
90
Established almost 70 years ago, Jayantilal & Co has mastered the craft of stone mining and processing. They produced four white marble stones - each measuring 2.5 meters in height, and approximately 1.5 meters in width - and engraved upon them were the many achievements of this accomplished man. These marble slabs appear almost connected to one another as if to demonstrate the complexity of the life of the man they are dedicated to. Large trees forming a shaded canopy form the backdrop for the memorial, with the foreground being composed of low-lying grasses - both of which provide a contrast to the authoritative material that composes the main frame.
