CONTRIVANCE An Architecture Portfolio by Pratik Bharati

Curated Works | School of Environment and Architecture(SEA) | 2018-2021

In the curation of this portfolio, I had to ask myself an important quenstion. Who am I as a designer? What is my lan guage as a Designer? How do I question the process of Design. These questions help in ideating a philosphy for my practice .My works aims to question the Architecture through tangents of science, philosphy, art and history.I believe in ecstatic lines away from fancy renders as clear lines of thoughts manifested from my imaginations through readings and modelling. In the quest to craft subtlenness and kinaesthetic experience.I situate question architecture in the domain of City,Type,Expe rience,Nature,Light, andForm.Questioning the form of growing cities. Since the very form of drawing becomes incumbent to express the architecture. My abstract thoughts find experiments as a tool to devise new processes to question the stagnant conventional form by which buildings today are imagined today .Questions of Phenomenonlogy,Sustainablity,Urbanism and Natural spaces fascinates me as a set of rules that I try to operate on while designing to craft human experiences for varied scales which go coherent with nature and poetics of the context.

This curation holds the strain of my learning which I grasped in different forms all these years.Kindly go through all pages till end to capture the sense and thoughts the book wants to express throughthis book. These experiments are a process of conceptualising abstract thoughts to create a physican/non physical manifestation from my skills and thoughts. This portfolio aims to be a continuation of thoughts from my readings of architectural and non architectural text . Etmylogy of words is important to me as words posses colossal power of storing thoughts in semantics. I believe it holds up the strains of architectural theory for the contemporary times .

01 NATURE " School as Forest"-Residential School Veti,Murbad SEM 7 Building Technology Instructor - Dipti Bhaindarkar Water is an interesting form of resource flow which controls life on planet earth. The process started with Questioning resources and flows on the surroundings around Veti,Murbad a tribal village rich with adivasi cultureHence Questioning the logic of working with natural sites? Why do buildings become hard isolated blocks eating our forests with growing technologies? It becomes important to imagine a coherent space of nature and buildings. Project briefs a residential school in Veti, Murbad. The first choice for this was thinking about contributing to this landscape by building a medicinal fauna rich forest around water pools on heavy contours who conserve small streams which join to contribute in collecting water for canal and contribute towards the agricultural landscape around. Research on the seasonality of plants through a timeline was done to conserve flora and fauna and agriculture seasonalities around. The process for building started with imagining a natural experience which becomes an integral sensory experience for the building. How does the building interacts with the contour and uses land without disturbing crafting conscious natural spaces on the hill? The buildings sit very lightly on the ground without disturbing natural levels of contour.Bricked classrooms with circular courtyards for each class room with element of smell from flower garden to enhance the space quality.Building tries to capture different form of light through out the day with its geometry.Building keeps its clear logics Questioning what is the space of learning and its co-existence with residential schools. 01

Agricultural Landscape -Central idea for building emerges from looking at the larger landscpe of forests, agricultre and hills as resource and flows. What does the seasonality of these fields around work offer as a seasonality.

02

Using digital painting postcards drawn to detail out a sensory experiences .Changing the form and method to devise archetectonics and kinaesthetic of different spaces. How to craft out experience that connects outside landscape with the building.

03

Postcards as a tool to think for How buildings will react to different seasonalites of landscape. Can the building react to these phenomenon. How does landscapes imbeds itself with practices of landscape

04

07

Sustainability is a bigger picture far beyond questions of global warming and green material .It is more about conserving anthropocene to save the planet to sustain its bioprocesss. Form of builldings that go coherent with natural landscape.Sustainablity should be a practice to create natural spaces that invites human nature interaction.Questions of Design through resource flows to enhance human nature relationship. Materialty that comes from making structures strong for years and thin

02 HERITAGE "Stories of Maheshwar" - Fort Dcumentation SEM 4 Architecture Documentation Instructor - Rupali Gupte,Anuj Daga,Saba Giradkar Historical buildings are nostalgic memories of the human history which are traces of our history, culture and life. Questions of Conservation of these buildings by conserving the language of Spacemaking logics, construction pro cesses, spatial manisfestations.Documentation is adding pages of information to history capturing the social/cultural conditions their impact on built-form, culture, traditions in a historical timeframe.Questioning How to conserve the value of the place? The documentation took place in the historical town of Maheshwar,India documenting the fort complex uderstanding the Fort Complex with functional networks which have a subtle transcend of scales which further meet the Narmada river.Questioning How does the form of the river shapes the fort complex its realm of Public spaces? How Ghats function on a public scale?

03 Porosity "Oasis in City" - Housing for Elderly SEM 5 Space and Form studies Instructor - Dipti Bhaindarkar,Shrikar Bhave Cities have lost their porosities and interactive public spaces. Studying the morphosis of CONTEXT with Nolly plan sets up the Question of How Porous our Neighbourhoods are of about a bigger question of our surroundings, figure ground relations. The way compound walls are becoming barrier for porous public space. Inturn how to imagine building in the realm of Public space. Question of how does the building add up to the inter esting connection of house behind plot? Who own Pub lic Spaces? and its connection to streets. The idea scales itself for creating democratic spaces for ecology and fauna around. The program facilitates housing for 20 families in an Old age home.Made up of a series of courtyards that are po rous for inside and outside for street, wind and birds. The building is a lego of lantern boxes of light that cap tures a pattern of light through punctures into slabs that enhances the phenomenological sensory space in a dense neighbourhood of Borivali. The public bath tries to reimagine the form of Hamams in these environments as a place of leisure and nature to spend time around. A public space that introduces urban farming and a po rous space of courtyards in the stilts. 18

05 STREET Staggered Extensions -Community centre as a cultural Bridge for Jewish community,Alibaug SEM 3 Form and Space studies Instructor - Rupali Gupte,Samir Raut Aliabaug being a coastal town as historical trading town has invited different ethnic groups through out the globe.Jewish community in Alibaug came as oil exporters in 17th century .A jewish neighbourhood in Alibaug has an intresting form to study typology. Module started by detail documentation of a jewish neighbourhood with a Synagouge and jewish house. Design started with postcards to get a sense of Archetec tonic and its type with a larger fabric of this old town. Elements like street become as guiding lines of force to think about form .Program facilitates a design for Commu nity Centre and a bakery with house for the its owners. Building is built on staggering lines which later become walls and slabs in a space frame with staggering levels of lantern like stone jali boxes faceing the street The first floor becomes restaurant sitting while series of steps create a threshold with street for public space. The volumetric explorations are designed to adress the humid climate and cross ventilation in the building.

06 Lightness "Shelter"-Community centre for Floods SEM 7 Building Technology Instructor - Malak Singh Gill,Saba Giradkar Architecture has largely impacted our surroundings with construction waste on our planet. Hence the question How can buildings be humble and light on context when they sit on the ground. The project is located on a field surrounded by highrise type and nallah that floods every year making 500 people homeless during rains. Design briefs on designing a community centre for neighbouring slums which helps as a rescue centre during floods. Using the concept of seasonality to think about a building that performs for multiple programs like public stilts/rescue centres. The project aims to achieve lightness in terms of sustain ability, materiality and modularity of space. The bamboo sections are crafted to create an array of space frame that becomes stilts on the ground while the first floor with a large roof whose eaves get down to a human scale maintain a human connection with building. The services are designed to decentralise the water resource that would be collected in different pots from the roof turning building into a water collector.

07 CITY Emerging Context-A)Mysore SEM 6 Allied Design Urban Studies Instructor - Rohit Mujumda,Shreyank Khemlapure The city is an amorphous growing entity today form of the city is continuously growing with huge affluence from real estate, industrialisation, pandemic these conditions and forms have shaped our cities in a specific form. Cties are of network and amalgamation of different forms of livelihoods, cul ture, traditions, social structure. To capture the spirit, the spine of the emerging context of the cities is an important tool to understand their potential. A) Emerging context of Mysuru The city of Mysuru has a historical legacy of different rulers in history .Old precinct of Mysuru shows us the traces of old morphologies of the city.A study was done on older precincts of Mysore to identify the emerging context question prior to design to situate an intervention for the city precinct of Mysuru .After identifying the emerging educational tourism context in the central core of city. The precinct has educational tourism with large government training centres, govt resthouses, office complex and hostels. After studying these complexes a study tried to question the orientation and logic of buildings for turning there back towards an important lake form .Question of porosity for how these buildings can be imagined in realm of public space without compound boundries including the nature trail as a radial point around the lake that help in employing for Porosity.Design comes out of site for a eco butterfly park as a threshold for building to meet the lake. 41

07 CITY Emerging Context - A)Akola SEM 7 Allied Design Urban Studies Instructor - Rohit Mujumda,Shreyank Khemlapure A) Peri Urbanisation for Pandemic -The border of city and highways have worked as a place of escape from the pandemic conditions. The covid norms forced people to stay inside their houses for a long time. Relaxation of covid norms along the highway allowed to develop new urban conditions. Popular food outlets from inner city started to purchase land outside and started modular business of restaurants as well as marriage halls/Dhabas/Garage etc .But it is also interesting to look at how the construction of national highway has shaped the type around .Apartment type is very evident along the border which is quite rare in the context around. During pandemic the whole inner city travelled to these places and in a way city moved. There is interesting type that has emerged out of these like spaces for hide and recreation. The peri urbanisation conditions have changed after the construction National Highway no 6. New forms of economies have started to develop along the edge of highways. This has led to development of newer types along the edge of the high- ways. Land rates have skyrocketed along the borders with new types like marriage lawns/supermarkets/dhabas/garage. Most of this context has emerged within a time span of 3-4 years. The city is expanding along the boundaries with a form that differentiates itself through new context addressing different densities and porosities. The nature of public space is very different from that of a inner city it is more scattered and the landscape generates a new type which functioned differ ently in covid pandemic times it was more open for different conditions. 46

08 SPAN "Factory of Experiments"-Spirit of the Place-Birmingham SEM 7 Building Technology Instructor - Dipti Bhaindarkar Situated in the dense industrial fabric of old industrial town in Birmingham.Studying the context at a City's scale it becomes an important convention and set of rules to understand how old and new buildings exist coherently in the Urban Fabric of Birmingham. What is the Collection of experiences that creates the City? What is the spirit of place? What are the forms of conserving it? How context controls the Poetics of materiality with the building? The building situates itself by the canal on a subway node reimagining the Urban form of building along water bodies in industrial areas.Working with the element of sound in a building through the flowing water in canal. The long-span steel trussed frames sit on precast Buttressed RCC sec tions . The lightness of steel truss and translucent light of PVC roofing creates an experimental space that appreciates a translucent form of light. The Maker's Space is designed for a double volume space for mezzanine units of laboratories with an eatery each with a unique staircase.Nesting of spaces becomes an important logic to create a threshold for private and public space.

09 COPIA "Library of Light"-Phenomenological Associations SEM 7 Building Technology Instructor - Rupali Gupte.Anuj Daga The thought process started with questioning What Is Contemporary? processes and building logics for a spatial experience. In the process using phenomenological associa tions from text "Copia" (65-67) "A Book on Libraries" where the essence of experience is borrowed from literature text. To change the form for How we think for building and re think conventional logics. The process started with postcards for experience by drawing out phenomenological possibilities for the Uttan, Mumbai Site situated on a hill by the Arabian sea. A undulat ed roofed library as a symbolic gesture for waves - a phenomenological expression. Here symbolism becomes an element to create a sensory space for reading.Associations help to creates light waves in building through form of parametric ferrocement roof.A space of quietness and light waves. A step to question the nature of Contemporary spaces for different experiences of multiple programs.

10 Processes Experiment on Building Processes-B)Computational Permutations SEM 4 Computation and Digital anotamies Instructor - Dushyant Asher Mathematics is a subject of possiblities you can operate on a form to get infinite outcomes.Permutations are the operations that are performed on Planar solid which get cut through solid void frustum this profile is controlled and form changes with simple boolean operations addition subtraction union configure a form of becomes an whole from Parts.Coding that control these forms on certain Parameters. Further can these operations be performed on differnt scales from city to furniture scale in real life?.Can these operations be used to make an optimum of resource usage in buildings. Functioning at different scales. Can this help in conceptualising difffernt scale and devlop set of rules to control the growth of a form for multiple scales.

59

10 Processes Experiments on Building Proces-A)Casting air SEM 7 Allied Design Instructor - Dushyant Asher The initial idea with sketching led to imagining a 3 D space frame functioning along 3 axes where this process will take place. The idea was to separate the conventional unitary logic of space-making practices. This led to another idea where fluid volumes are imagined into the hard form work where the solid void relation of space will take place. Further, this process developed into how do we control the form of these spaces and control the geometry of these cavities which were created. Can we imagine a grid framework to control the scale of different spaces ?. The idea further developed into can we imagine a new form or can we scale up the building where this simple experiment of cavities actually turn out into a section of the building can it inhabit people and be used for different purposes. The next stage was about studying the phenomenological experiments that work on associations. Phenomenology is the idea of how different associations can be imagined in the context. How does the space become kinaesthetic in its experience what is the role of light in shaping the surfaces? How can we control the form of light through its intricate geometry?. The central question of Phenomenology was an outcome for how can we create a process that generates a surface which reacts to light in a specific manner and generate different experiences.

10 Processes Experiments on Building Processes-C)Bioform Abstraction SEM 1 Allied Form and Space studies Bioform studies Instructor - Prasad Shetty,Rohit majumdar,Shreyank Khemlapure,Dushyant Asher Biology operates at a microscopic level various bioreaction and processes keeps things alive on earth. These process have largely shaped the bioforms around us,they largely control physical properties of an organisms there adaptability and geometry. Studio pushed the idea of looking at these bio forms and bio structuresSanjay Gandhi National Park. Understanding the geometrical form as a resultant of natural process.A form of anthill was studied studying the sections of real anthill measuring different proportions of height and radius for different spaces inside an anthill. Study of anthill proportions was used to create an ab straction to express as an poetic form which is contextual to actual anthill.Abstracted form is a wooden geometrical structure modular to its scale The abstraction is used to express the bioform of anthill in an analytical yet a poetic form for abstraction.
